I want to see if people can help me identify all the fun things to do in GW2 as opposed to things that are done just for farming. I’m tired of Skinner boxes; I want to be engaged and have fun. So far I have:

• Dungeons/FOTM (no speedclears, no exploits, no skipping)
• WvW (especially away from the zerg, ignoring the daily AP checklist)
• sPVP (for fun, ignoring the daily AP checklist)

Some things can be fun in small doses:

• Jumping puzzles (for fun, not chest running)
• Mini-games (for fun, not to make AP numbers go up)

And there are things that are fun once (or maybe a couple times) for the novelty factor:

• World exploration/completion
• Temple/dynamic events
• Personal story (try all branches)
• Instanced story portions of Living Story
• Mini-dungeons
• Jumping puzzles (as part of exploration)

I would really like to find some more fun things to do since I have long since finished the novelty ones and the main ones are starting to feel stale. Please help!

Depending on who you ask, all the above can be considered farming and tedious.

Heck, people hate it when they have to redo map exploration on alts because they find it repetitive and tedious.

Do you really think it would make much of a difference if they made these chests farmable?

If you decided to make FSP before the update then you were obviously satisfied with the skin. I’ve had FSP since January and I can say thakittenis already an epic shield.

I was satisfied at the time … things have changed. Preferences change. When one thing changes, then everything that seems remotely related should change along with it. When something gets left behind, many things associated usually doesn’t sit well.

It’s kind of like an old piece of work that satisfied your tastes back then. I could say five years ago I was a big fan of J-Pop music … today, I rarely ever listen to J-Pop music.

Back to the scope of this game— I cycle through four different armor sets. Sure they have the same stats on them, but if I’m not satisfied with that set, I piece together another set and wear it.

Don’t make me spew examples because it would go way beyond the scope of this thread.

A more appropriate analogy is buying the 2014 Porsche today with state of the art features ABC. You bought it because you were satisfied. And then a year later you see the 2015 Porsche come out with even better features DEF and you are suddenly kitten ed off that you don’t have them. And you demand a free upgrade when it should not be expected.

Ehm, i think your analogy is lacking as well. Cars and other physical things don’t translate properly when we are talking about digital assets. The proper way to parallel this is to compare it to you buying/investing time into one of say 10 different digital products from the same maker that are advertised as being equally good. The product you chose is at that time equal to the other products. Then 6 months later the maker of all said products announces that these will be updated. You naturally think this includes the one you chose to. No, your product is the only one that is no longer equal to the others. This is not ok imo.
In your Porche analogy you are the owner of a physical product that cant be “updated”.

How about when it comes to software that gets released in one year and a new version comes around? You don’t get free upgrades.

You don’t get a free upgrade from Word 2007 to Word 2010. Nor do you get a free upgrade from Cubase 6 to Cubase 7.

You committed to purchasing an item that time because you were enticed by it’s current features.

And now that there is a no version, you think it’s fair to go to the company and demand your version gets free upgrades as well? Well at what point does this stop? What if I had Cubase 1. Could I demand upgrades each time they had new editions, all the way to Cubase 7? It’s unfeasible.

You realize that if the price gets too high on a precursor it becomes economical to forge them yourselves in the toilet, right? While you might not be comfortable with the uncertainty of it all, I assure you that the ability to gain them from the forge through brute force RNG is a control on the price from getting too out of hand.

As a result, anyone attempted to control the Legend market would ALSO have to control, in a significant way, the exotic staff market, and the rare staff market. So while technically feasible for a super wealth player to buy out the supply of Legends, buying out enough exotic staves to permanently inflate the Legend’s price is an impossibility.

I’m not so sure if it is economical, considering the low chance and the very high chance you will spend more than recoup. It may entice a few more people to gamble, but not enough to materially affect the price. I think people who are holding The Legend to speculate would have more of an impact than gamblers.

If we were talking about something that can be promoted, like lodestones, then of course.

The price is not set by the sellers alone (you are only seeing sell orders and that is NOT the equilibrium price), but with buyers as well. You are merely speculating that the price will rise because buyers will be willing to pay more.

I’m sorry, but I don’t believe for a second that you do not take supply into consideration while speculating.

Again manipulating does not require setting the price, just attempting to change the price. It can be done from either end, buying or selling.

OK here was my risk analysis for speculating in Storm several months ago
-Meteor is an alluring sceptre with three classes that use it and can use it quite often in their builds, but it is a sceptre that can use visual upgrades
-Some legendaries were updated (Moot, Dreamer, e.t.c.), so it’s safe to say the rest of the underwhelming legendaries will be updated as well
-I know the scavenger hunt is coming, but I strongly believe that it will come after all legendaries have been updated
-As a result of the above, supply will always remain constant and ebb and flow slightly, so the risk in the change of supply will not impact my investment
-Any future increase in price will largely be as a result of increased demand, not lower supply

Maybe I’m just lucky because the items I speculate in have very little to do with the supply side and more to the demand side.

Right now with the speculation of orbs and crystals, I don’t look at how many are being sold or how many are on the TP listed. All I care about is demand outstripping supply in the future.

Three separate times we have had John Smith provide data that showed precursor hoarding by a select few players was a myth.

And I will provide you an explanation. Maybe there are sellers out there who are confident that the price will sell at that range, and they won’t mind undercutting by 1C. Maybe they are not desperate for money, and dont’ need to undercut by a lot.

Also, manipulation isn’t the same thing as speculation. People hoarding precursors isn’t manipulation. I hoarded 4 storms at one time and then held 2 just before the legendary changes were announced. But that doesn’t mean I’m manipulating the price.

In the case of limited supply items speculation may go hand in hand with manipulation. If I were to “speculate” that the price on a limited supply item would rise when the visible supply diminishes (we know this happens from the game’s past) and then I diminish said supply, I am actively "manipulating " via speculation buying in the short term.

It depends on how we are defining manipulation. I define it as a control to fix the price on my terms. So if I go out and speculate Dusk and then go on the TP and force feed the price of 1200g, while creating false buy orders, then yes I’m manipulating. And of course, my attempt at manipulating can fail spectacularly when I run out of gold at my fake buy orders, or when I cannot keep up buying the other sellers undercutting my price. It is this risk that keeps manipulators in check, and which I’ve seen time and time again. Remember a few weeks ago when The Legend was +1100g?

IMO I don’t consider it manipulation if I were to speculate Dusks, drain the supply and hoard them in the bank, while waiting for the buy orders to rise.

We don’t call investors market manipulators right? Especially when they just invest in a stock to hold? An investor is a market manipulator only if they are doing actions which create an illusion that what they are manipulating is doing good or bad.

There will always be a maximum price that a buyer will purchase Dusk at, and there will always be a minimum price that a seller will sell it at. As a speculator, I would say I’m doing my part to making sure we reach this point.

I have a Vision of the Mists on my warrior which I would like to transfer over to my Mesmer. The vision was originally transferred from my guardian several months back, so this is actually the 2nd time I will be transferring it.

Does anyone know the exact steps I should take now that we have splitters? I have several free splitters and crystals lying around, but I would much prefer not to waste them.

It would be so easy to grief this. Just get two people to take over the Hylek turrets and don’t do anything but just afk, while you get the rest of you friends to protect them.

No there isn’t a problem with the economy. The TP player is taking advantage of anything from market inefficiencies or even impatient players when getting gold. And the TP player is also assuming a great amount of risk. If it were so easy to make money on the TP, everyone would be doing it. But it’s not as easy as you make it, and you do not always enter the black at the end of the day.

Why is hoarding manipulation? I’m not setting any prices while precursors are sitting in my bank. In fact, I’m waiting for the demand to rise enough so that I can sell it higher than I would have before it rose. That’s on the buyer’s side, not the sellers side. Unless you want to accuse the buyer (you) of participating in ‘manipulating’ the price?

Now fake offers, that’s a little tricky. In the real world you could try and buy plenty of shares through one broker with the sole purpose of attempting to show that there is demand, but there is tremendous risk. But you could also buy shares through one broker and then selling shares to another and give the illusion of a high volume of trading. That is manipulation.

But that doesn’t happen in GW2 due to the nature of precursors, the economy and the extremely high listing fee.

Either way, who cares if someone tries to manipulate the price. They can try to and they may fail. If they do, and someone is willing to pay that price, then great! We reached equilibrium.

Take a look at storm, which I watched since March. For several months the price was between 90-150g. Buyers and sellers were willing to buy/sell at that price.

But oh no! Price rose up to 300G! Does that mean sellers manipulated the price to sell at 300g?!

No. That price got pushed up to 300G from demand. The sellers were more than happy to sell more than 90-150G until the buyers demanded more, all the way up to valuing Storm at 300G.

I could see manipulation happening when someone decides to buy all Storms and relists all at 900G. Will the buyer respond? Most likely, but they’re not going to pay 900g, so manipulator’s efforts failed. Other legit, free sellers are going to slowly undercut the price when they realized buyers will not pay up. But maybe now the buyers are willing to pay a bit more (because they want the item now) and now are willing to pay 400G. But that 400G price wasn’t manipulated. It’s just the new equilibrium.

Not sure what you mean by having “enough time to acquire it”.
They’ve got time gate mechanics already, so the drip feeding only hard caps the hardcore players.
I wouldn’t be surprised if many casual players will only just finish obtaining an ascended gear (if they even finish it, that is), only for the next one to be released, ie. exactly the same feeling of a never ending treadmill for them. Assuming they don’t quit, of course.
Heck, some people still haven’t even finished getting a full set of exotics.

I don’t think Anet is going to design a game catered to the bottom 1% of casual players who have played since release but probably don’t even have an exotic set. They design something as a whole for the average player while also having alternatives out there for people who are hardcore and casual.

If you’re a casual player and can’t get an ascended weapon within 2 months then probably they need to reassess what kind of risk/time/reward they want from this game, and probably settle for rares/exotics. I quite frankly don’t like players who want all end-game content handed to them just for logging in.

If the real world financial market has insider trading, this game definitely will have it. Since there is zero punishment and lack of oversight to control for this type of information being given out.

Actually, the default position on any claim is the skeptic. The burden of proof lies with the person making the claim. I made no claim that it isn’t happening, for all I know it might be happening. But pointing out the lack of evidence in another’s argument does not, necessarily, imply an endorsement of the opposite position. Understand the difference?

You want an easy way to spot real world insider trading? VERY EASY, check out the price of certain stock prior to M&A announcement, almost in all cases the price creep up a little.

Stock price naturally goes up and down, even when there is no material information readily available.

Just cause the price changed in one direction just before a major announcement doesn’t mean it was insider trading.

buddy, I dont want to argue with you. However, there is a very obvious correlation between announcement and prior day trading. Some prop trader even used as way to bet on possible M&A. My finance professors and industry practitioners all agreed on it. Btw I am already working in the field, and not a student spewing theories.

And so then that wasn’t insider trading. It was just some trader speculating that there would be a M & A.

You may work in that field and obviously know more than I do but making blanket statements that say a rise in share price before any positive announcement is a sign of inside trading isn’t convincing. IMO after completing W1 trib two times with normal coins, I think the infinite coin is not worth it.

You can exchange 1 BB for 5 coins. That’s 25 lives.

You can get at least 4 BB by speed rushing W1 normal mode, which can be completed in under 15 minutes.

So every day you can get at least 100 lives.

So unless you plan on doing both W1 and W2 on trib mode in one day, you absolutely do not need the infinite coin.

One of my friends was one of the testers for LoL (They had a tier above the public beta) and I remember he was telling me that when somone spilled the beans on a certain top secret project, the company purged the entire group access and records to oblivion.

Just reminded me of that, I guess. In any case, I hope we get some more light on this issue.

They are all contractually bound by an NDA (almost 100% of companies that have alpha/beta testers use these), they can boot you for anything. If someone is leaking information you can report it to ANet and they’ll take care of it.

If I were an inside trader I would probably buy those mats en masse and be richer than the 4GK peak in assets I had.

I honestly didn’t hold any definite speculative viewpoint on the subject until an official response could come about; I didn’t want to fall into the same speculation trap that a lot of people here did and start making wild claims that could end up being false.

I know what I hoped would come about, and I’m glad it did, but I didn’t want to be all like “yeah, they’re definitely not gonna add a gear treadmill” when everyone else is shouting “zomg they’re adding a gear treadmill” here on the forums, because what if I ended up being the one that’s wrong?

E2:Ascended gears are making a lot of people worry about an ever-increasing gear treadmill. Many players did not want the exotic/legendary system to change, and they don’t like ascended gears. Was this expected? Can this be something fixed in a painless way? Can it happen?
Yes the response was definitively expected. We did not intent for the information to come out this way. Going back to my previous answer the issue is that we believe in the vertical progression system we had pre launch and that the introduction of an element into the system post launch was going to cause concern but something we believe in. *That is why there is no plan for new Rarity Tiers of loot but there are plans to enhance or gain items within the existing rarity design whose properties continue on a shallow power curve. * This said we certainly don’t want to create a system where itemization blocks progression in the game globally and we also need to be careful of this in areas such as FotM if the primary reward isn’t available elsewhere in the game. So in short its an exciting problem but one that has been poorly communicated and handled.
And for this i take responsibility and apologies. However the future of this philosophy and the design challenges it throws up are going to lead to a pioneering world and one that we are very excited about.
So anyway i kind of went of topic here so in short. We don’t intend to have an item rarity gear treadmill, we intend for the progression for gaining these rewards to have lots of different avenues for different types of player and where possible lower no fun grind within the whole of the game.

All I’m saying with this, is that if you think this will be the end of vertical progression you are going to be disappointed. The same way I made the mistake of reading too much into early statements about the game, it would be a mistake to read too much into what they say now.

Yes, vertical progression through some other means, but not through a new tier, which is what I’m talking about. People make a whole deal about the ascended tier and how Anet will release a new one when all signs since November pointed otherwise.

I have done both Liadri and SAB.

And while I could say that both certainly separate the hardcores from the casuals, both are easy to do.

Liadri itself is quite easy. the 8-orb achievement however, is very less forgiving and completing it is very impressive IMO. But I firmly believe skill in MMOs does not exist. The closest thing to skill is reaction time and APM, which isn’t really skill.

Tribulation mode is ridiculously easy. It’s not difficult, it’s just a chore. You run into a spike, you just remember it the next time and avoid it. I did W1 Trib simply following Dulfy’s guides. I never intended to buy an infinite coin and I never will since I can just shadow dulfy’s steps (and not to mention the coins themselves are easy to get)

They are all contractually bound by an NDA (almost 100% of companies that have alpha/beta testers use these), they can boot you for anything. If someone is leaking information you can report it to ANet and they’ll take care of it.

Actually, the default position on any claim is the skeptic. The burden of proof lies with the person making the claim. I made no claim that it isn’t happening, for all I know it might be happening. You want an easy way to spot real world insider trading? VERY EASY, check out the price of certain stock prior to M&A announcement, almost in all cases the price creep up a little.

Stock price naturally goes up and down, even when there is no material information readily available.

Just cause the price changed in one direction just before a major announcement doesn’t mean it was insider trading.

ur also missing the fact that most ppl that plays the forge probably brought their mats through TP, therefore it is consider a gold sink.
I would also like to point out that because of the chances for precursor from the forge, there is demands for mith ore and elder wood, compare to silk and thick leather.

There is no fee for putting up buy orders.

If you want to go several levels deep, such as arguing that the introduction of the mystic forge leads to higher prices of materials, which leads to higher amounts of gold sinked as a fee, then yes, I can see it indirectly being a gold sink. But the mystic forge alone isn’t.

This subforum is a discussion on the new ‘raid’. I’m sure there will be people who will love it or hate it. This is a great place for the appropriate devs to collect feedback.

You have a great idea and I think it would be a good addition. But there should be a purpose for Teq when he attacks during the invasion. Right now everyone ignores Scarlet until the end since dps’ing her does nothing. At that point she’s more of a nuisance than a cool feature.

Furthermore, I bet this is content that was NOT designed by the living story teams. This is content that was being worked behind the scenes by a separate team.

I bet they are taking these four weeks off to catch up on projects and refine them.

First time in quite awhile I’ve seen a “too little content” thread here.

Well, I don’t like living story. At all. Getting rid of living story is a step in the right direction. Next would be achievements..do we really need a set of new achievements each patch? Stop this. Pressures the player to get it all done. Third would be ascended gear…re-think it entirely.

Then people like me would come back.

I’d very much prefer Anet constantly release and refresh content than leave it stagnant to appease folks like you.

After all, you don’t play anymore and you don’t contribute. Why aleniate those that already play the game and appease those that don’t?

1.) If you have the gold, you can get to lvl 400 in under an hour. It’s not a grind if you use guides. It is a grind if you don’t know what you’re doing and keep leveling off lower-level crafts.

2.) Crafting is not necessary unless you want a quick way to get ascended weapons. You can get armors off the TP for very cheap or you can get them for dungeon tokens, karma or WvW badges. You can also get ascended weapons as a rare drop. Legendary weapons can be bought off the TP

3.) See above

It’s your own fault for associating living story with something different than a game update.
