annoyed? i actually get complimented on it more often than you’d think. personally i think it’s the best combination. orchid and maroon is nice too.

Yes that looks good. But the picture in the OP looks like it started out as blue gold and was left in the sun for 20 years like an old faded Pontiac.

Blue and gold can be quite regal. Look at Tutenkhamen, or gold fleur de lis on a blue field. It could be your graphics are set lower than his so to him it looks way better, y’know!

Dark blue and actual gold looks good. Pale blue and lemon = forever alone.

Seems that winning is more important to SF than playing.

Maybe everyone should transfer to the winning server. That seems like a plan with no downside.

I’d get sphincter speared about it, but…

That was disheartening last night. I logged on for a bit and we had two Commanders running around ET and they were doing a pretty good job of taking back the keeps, garrison, and our towers. But almost as quickly, they would fall to SF again. We just didn’t have the numbers to leave behind to defend so it ultimately turned into a karma/xp train. The group I was with ran out of steam and got wiped near Champs and most of us seemed to head off to bed after that.

Not much point defending or upgrading when SF will take it all back in the morning anyway.

My hat is off to those commanders who can practically conjure a golem army at the drop of a hat and raise someone’s borderland in the blink of an eye. As a logistics operation it was a finely tuned machine.

At one point the golems were knocking down doors so fast that they’d knock down the door of a tower before we had time to finish off the keep lord in the tower before it. We had to sprint from one open keep to the next. My warrior alt had a hard time keeping up.

Actually plant pollen grains are little multicellular plants that contain the sperm and other cells bound in a protective coating.

The Sylvari "Father"?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Wanderer.3248

Wanderer.3248

Sylvari could be haploids. Haploids that are produced from unfertilised gametes do not have fathers (but they do have grandfathers).

Plants reproduce via haploid offspring. Ants and bees also produce haploid males from unfertilised eggs. Given that Sylvari are plants and a hive race it almost seems inevitable that they are the haploid stage of their species.

Haploids of flowering plants are not at all like their diploid mother. Pollen is actually a haploid plant, but with only a few cells. While plants usually produce fertile haploid “offspring” (these combine to produce a new diploid offspring – e.g. a new tree), I imagine it would be possible for a “hive plant” to produce infertile haploid offspring that are not used for reproduction. Sylvari could be similar to ant and bees, used as workers and warriors rather than for reproduction. The Pale Tree would be the queen.

Presumably, if the pale tree was pollinated, it would produce new pale trees.

However, it’s not impossible that the Sylvari themselves could serve as pollen, but only for other trees (and not with each other). For genetic reasons in might take two Sylari to pollinate one tree.

The genetics of sexual reproduction of plants and hive insects is pretty complicated, and when you combine the possibilities into a hive plant all sorts of weird things could occur.

Are Badges of Honour only received for kills?

in WvW

Posted by: Wanderer.3248

Wanderer.3248

Badges sometimes drop off camp supervisors and tower/keep lords. I think you need to be one of the top damage dealers to get them. If you solo a camp then you can get badges about half the time.

I have never ever seen a badge drop off a normal (veteran) guard, and I’ve killed a truckload of those solo.

AOE classes seem to get more badges in Zerg fights in my experience, probably because they end up tagging more opponents. You can kill a player solo and not get any badges, but you can hit five players with AOE and end up with bags full of badges when your Zerg rolls over them.

Finishing a player with a stomp (rather than normal damage) also seems to increase badge drop rate, in my experience, but that could be just luck or my imagination.

The whole blue for boys and pink for girls thing is relatively modern in western society. Prior to the 20th century it would have been quite common for men to wear pink and girls to wear blue. Pink tights used to be quite commonly worn by men during the Middle Ages.

ET seems to have recently acquired a serious Golem fetish. We must have all the rich kids on the block partying on ET these days.

I am noticing a pattern in the battles the last few weeks. If at first you don’t succeed, bring more bodies. And when you hit troubled waters again, bring even more bodies with the same exact tactics. Rinse, repeat. Eventually realize you cannot accomplish objective and hide to build golems. And then when you pull through, act like you accomplished a great feat.

Different commanders, tagging out. They might seem like three waves, but they are almost completely different armies.

There are so many NPCs that will start dynamic events if you just take the time to talk to them. They don’t always have obvious icons (but many of them will run up to you and verbally ask for help).

They give you some exposition and send you out to kill X, or collect Y, or protect Z. Sounds like a quest to me. (Many of the DEs that might appear to be “random” to you, are actually someone else’s quest).

Most of these quests are way better designed than traditional MMO quests. Slow down, look around and take some time to appreciate them.

Logged on last night and there were about six people from ET in WvW. Grabbed a couple of camps got rolled by a roaming Ferg group, squashed a couple of SF noobs and sat around for a bit to see if we might get enough people for a breakout. We didn’t. Got bored and left again to do PVE.

Too boring. At this rate by the end of the week there won’t be any ET in WvW at all.

No doubt SF (and you can take that abbreviation to mean the server or it’s self-appointed forum champion) will feel godlike, kicking goals on an empty field.

Does being the only halfway intelligent thing in an otherwise empty universe make you it’s de-facto deity? Some sort of prince of limbo, playing toy soldiers with the camp guards and pretending they’re real? Will you start dancing on the corpses of the tower lords, even as they vanish? Will you laugh at the breakout commanders because there is no one else to hear you?

What do you think?

I think WvW isn’t PVP. It’s PVE, but there are also other players trying to kill you. It doesn’t have to be fair. You have to pick your battles.

I think gear won’t save you from being rolled by a zerg. It won’t help you knock down the walls of stonemist faster either. It won’t get supply into Anz fast enough to hold up against the 24/7 trebbing.

I think good strategy and tactics beat good gear.

I think issues with class balance should be fixed directly, not bandaged over.

Laurels. Thoughts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Wanderer.3248

1. Remain calm.
2. Hear me out.
3. Share your thoughts.

The new patch brought the laurel system as we know. With it the new ascended amulet. By a rough calculation it would take 20 days to obtain that single item.

What bothers me is that it requires an uninterrupted 1h per day (time for daily + time for monthly roughly divided across the 20 days) x 20 days streak. I am fully aware that the developers have more ways to obtain items planned out for us in the future. But is this a good start?

What I’m trying to say is that a little flexibility would be nice. I don’t think binding laurels to dailies that are lost once skipped is a good idea.

Would it be better if we had a weekly system?

[EDIT] I apologize if this sounded like I’m looking at it as a chore. The point I’m trying to get across is that perhaps there should be a more flexible way to handle laurels. Like something else other than the daily quest, with a weekly cap sort of thing.

If you compare how long it takes to get any ascended gear with the effort required to get exotic gear it seems that the whole raison d’être of ascended gear is to be a massive time sink for OCD players.

Why Represent another Guild Causes Rage?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Wanderer.3248

well, you can see it this way… irl you can go out with 2 girl at the same time without any of them knowing that there is another girl. When you open guild tab and see “not representing” it’s like one of the two girl receive a text message saying that you are at the other girl’s home which is problematic. So either you make it clear to both girl that you have too much love to give for only one or you pick the one you prefer.

IRL you can have a wife and a job and play sports without them demanding all your time always (if they do, find a new job/wife/team).

Sounds like most of you would like invulnerable yaks and have supply camps take 10 players so you can get back to running around in zergs without having to worry about small raiding groups outmanoeuvring you.

If someone is soloing your yaks, points and supply camps (even towers) 1-2 competent players can easily ruin their day. A 4 person team can easily roam the map and nail solo players. Most solo players will move on to easier pastures or retreat to the zerg if they keep running into small gangs.

BTW walking along with the Yak or standing around the camp is dumb. Move around. Ganking a player who’s distracted while soloing the yak/cp/camp is much easier.

I have found GW2 pretty light on bugs, especially for a newly released MMO. WoW had more back when I played it. W:AR was just terrible.

As for non-MMOs, games like Skyrim, Fallout, Diablo were full of bugs. Skyrim still crashes way more often than GW2, and there are still some broken quests years after the release.

Not that any number of bugs is a good thing.

Guild Wars 2 is rated T for teen. 13 years and older.

I think nudity requires a mature rating of M 17+ or an adult rating of 18+.

Says something that you can stab someone in the back and then stomp on them when they’re downed and get a teen rating, but take you clothes off and suddenly it’s adults only.

ANet has officially stated that Legendary stats will be bumped to Ascended when Ascended weapons are introduced.

The entire purpose of pursuing a Legendary weapon is to obtain something that cannot be obtained through anything else but hard work and due diligence.

Legendary weapons can be purchased off of the TP…Gold can be purchased with gems which can be purchased with real $$$. Legendary weapons are no longer the product of hard work and due diligence, just who has money.

Because the game is not a gear grind. Or a drink-the-raid-aid game where you have to play with 20 other players you’d rather not spend time with over and over and over to get a chance at the drop you want.

basically, only WoW and EvE succeeded at endgame.

its not easy to design a good endgame.
what can there be ?

gw2 you grind for look.
its allright.
if i was anet i would really gamble on making the wvwvw experience as good as possible. with guild halls, guild vs guilds, duels, and some kind of icon showing how badkitten you are in wvw. sonthat when ou see a player you re like “omg he rocks”.
as it is now its; “omg he farmed a lot or paid to win”.
that mentality isnt long term.

in the end anyway, its a computer game.. maybe ita meant to be played only for a while (even if that “a while” can easily be 500h like gw2!)

EVE has no endgame. If anything EVE is the total opposite of what the OP wants. Almost anything can be soloed, there is no end game, there is no gear grind. Most importantly there is no sound bound best in slot item that you are forced to play with 20 others to get.

The game certainly doesn’t force players into corps. In fact weak corps (guilds) don’t last long in EVE because they are a liability (and a target). Good corps only last because they actually do something useful for their members, and work together well.

If I was forced to have a group/guild in order to progress I would quit and find another game.

The only reason Everquest succeeded with this mindset is because it was the only choice on the market, Final Fantasy XIV tried to force players to group and it died one of the quickest deaths in MMO history.

We cannot have this attitude going forward.

MMOs offer a very unique proposition in the way that they foster cooperative or competitive gameplay with progression intertwined. There is no other genre that offers it, and the core differentiator is the group content that makes it all possible.

We cannot any longer try to facilitate solo players into this content designed for groups. It’s making the overall experience for everyone anemic and any unique advantages about the genre are evaporating.

The NFL doesn’t field teams of volunteers. The Rolling Stones are not compromised of walk-on musicians. They are well practiced and consistent teams. The same must be said for MMO group content unless we want to see the genre wither away.

Bad analogy. The NFL has hardly any players. That’s what you get for being elitist. GW2 is not a professional sport. It’s junior league, school ground, friends in the park, pick-up.

It’s a game.
