I doubt they have a germ theory, which would mean that any medicine is basically just folk cures or worse. No antibiotics, no antiseptics (except maybe salt). Even a fairly minor wound could lead to sepsis and death.

Surgeons main skill would be to saw off limbs really really quickly (because the only anaesthetic is lots of strong drink). And without a germ theory, surgery would be done without sterile supplies (not even hand-washing).

Of course, with magic, maybe all that is unnecessary. And who knows if germs even exist in Tyria?

The scenario the OP paints seems a little too perfectly crafted to be entirely plausible.

As a hypothetical situation, I can see the merit in a made up set of events as social commentary. But when this issue has been hashed over already, many times, I fail to see what the additional value in this thread is.

Seems like there is a certain class of ranger that needs to be told things several times for it to sink in. Yeah, if you ask people not to, there will always be some wise guy who does it more, just to be a kitten, but many people will listen. You’d be surprised how many people in a pug Zerg are actually really new to the game and don’t know this stuff.

Breaking into NA T1

Wanderer.3248

Havent you seen the pattern? JQ, SoS, SoR. SoS leaves, another server enters (think it was BG), SoR leaves another server enters (believe it was TC), now its BG turn to leave, perhaps SoS will come into T1 and break the cycle, I know that if Yak’s Bend was to enter T1 it wouldn’t break the cycle at all, if anything after time passes by they’d find themselves into the similar predicament that BG is going to face soon enough.

unrelated but awesome … Speaking of patterns. SoS only server that ever ‘crashed’ all the way to T4 and rebuilt to stable T2… rest ET/HoD/SBI/SoR etc all collapsed and were never the same.

Your knowledge of history is incomplete.

Both ET and HoD were once tier 1 servers. They were great rivals. Although it’s unlikely that there’s many players left on those servers now who were there in the beginning.

HoD bandwagon didn’t happen until almost two years later, and that was just a season two thing. No one had any illusions about HoD becoming tier 1.

ET has been bottom for almost the entire history of the game, since the long fall from T1. They have recently gained a lot of players, but they won’t get anywhere near T1. HoD and ET are actually fighting each other again now, which is amusing. They have a few good guilds and an NC who loves to golem train, but they don’t have the numbers (yet) for anything close to T1.

As for the dragons, it’s a bit like LotR, since Sauron takes the form of a giant flaming Eye, is more like a symbol rather than a character, they needed to expand Saruman’s role to give us a real villain character. That’s what we needed from the Elder Dragon war. Too bad Scarlet is dead.

In the movies they used several villains who acted for Sauron. The mouth of Sauron. Gothmog. Saruman and Denethor. Golem. The Balrog and Smaug (creations of Morgoth rather than Sauron, for what difference that makes).

Neither the books or the movie felt the need to have a single super villain. Sauron was essentially the devil. He’s not supposed to be something that you ever confront directly.

Too many ideas all rolled together.

I agree that the bottom 12 (or at least 9) servers should be merged into three.

I also agree that the EoTM colours need to be randomised. Green has it far too easy most weeks.

Most of your other ideas I disagree with.

EoTM has to be separate from the main maps. It is a overflow map that should have no influence on the main game.

Also the whole “Abaddon is behind every single thing that have ever happened in all of the Guild Wars campaigns” was rather silly.

One of my top 10 peeves with serial writers is the way they just have to tie every conceivable plot line together in some awkward way. (Not just in Guild Wars either, series like Doctor Who are guilty of it too).

For example I wish they had just left Scarlet in charge of the Sky Pirates & Clockwork, and had other villains for the other factions, instead of making the LS a big mess. The Molten Alliance would have been fine without Scarlet, so would the Toxic Alliance.

I still can’t buy having a Steampunk mad genius as the minion of a Plant Dragon.

And now we have four factions, who were individually quite interesting, that are effectively written out of the game. I think it’s a shame that there aren’t still Aetherblade raids, or Clockwork horror attacks.

And the Mordremoth plot would have been much better without her involvement.

in WvW

SW is pretty important since it can be sieged up for attacks on bay.

I think I’ve probably seen more battles over SW camp than any other.

Because Bay is so easy to take its a popular target. Also, since SW tower can treb bay, control of SW camp can become critical to controlling SW tower, and attacking/defending Bay.

If you hold Bay in an enemies BL, keeping SW camp is crucial to keeping Bay.

I’d prefer that the normal mobs were moderately challenging, rather than being someone you mow down like blades of grass. Then you wouldn’t have to use different mechanics for the bosses. I think the Mordrem and the Toxic alliance are good examples.

There’s something wrong when you deliberately pull large numbers of mobs so you can kill them more efficiently.

Most instances (most of the game actually) seems to be like a cartoon, with thousands of expendable minions and a single super villain.

Which means they need a fast generator with a whole bunch of different seeds, which sets up a risk of parallel threads randomly overlapping and kicking out the same sequence of numbers.

I don’t think that matters. Even if two different players received the exact same sequence of numbers, those numbers will be being used for different things, depending on the players actions, and the results are still going to look fairly unpredictable anyway.

You don’t need a cryptographically strong random number generator when the numbers are being applied to unpredictable player actions. All you need is one that generates an approximately uniform distribution in the long term.

But a lot of this is just geography, not really some magical association. For instance the Hylek are in the way of Zhaitains forces, so the Hylek get involved in that fight. Similarly the Ogres get caught up in the fight against the branded.

I think what Blude means is that totally changing the mechanics of the game for a boss battle is not the best idea.

It happens a lot in single player games, and it often sucks. It implies that the main game was too easy, and rather than fix the main game to be challenging, they threw the normal mechanics out the window for the boss fight.

OP Boss fights also mean that every major villain has to be some sort of titanic monster – like the holographic Scarlet, which means the writers get painted into a corner with respect to character development.

It would most likely not require any sort of testing seeing as no new code would need to be added and the white-swords indicators most likely aren’t vital to (or even interacting with) other parts of the code.

Pretty sure they mean testing how it works out for WvW, not testing that the code functions.

I have had this happen with players I tried to rez. You stand right next to the corpse, but you don’t get the rez option. They ask in /say “rez plox?” and I can only say “sry, can’t target you”.

Pale tree dies means Anet will have to rework the Grove, and Caledon forest heavily.

They’d have to keep being pestered by new players about why the hell are they talking to a dead person in the instances and then walking out and seeing the tree dead and gone. Basically, I’d wager a good bit of work, similar to if they decided to remove all ghosts from plains of Ashford or Ascalon. Reworking an entire area or region.

While I agree that the Greek gods were far more like humans than (for instance) an Abrahamic God, there was still a gulf. Not every Greek hero became immortal.

Wanderer.3248

Interesting analysis.

You charts depict the demand curve as being convex to the origin. And I think some of your argument relies on this assumption too.

In a game economy, as opposed to a real economy, I’m not that this is not a safe assumption. There could easily be scenarios where excess supply causes price to drop to zero. If the amber farm had been left running, I think there was a real danger that T6 matts would have ended up being near worthless bag fillers, only good for vendoring.

Taken to the logical extreme, if oversupply causes everything to end up at below vendor prices, then it’s very bad for the game.

The only problem I had with this fight was that 75% of the time the bubbles that make you fragile that you transfer to the Vortex Crystals spawned in the middle of those AoEs that one-shot you.

More like 99.99% of the time. Almost every single bubble spawned within the AOE when I did it. The few that didn’t were usually on the far side of the room with the boss in between.

On the odd occasion that the fragility bubbles weren’t covered in AOE, the vortex crystal was!

I gave up even trying to kill the vortex crystals and killed the boss the hard way. Its like they set up a mechanically simple fight and then tried their hardest to prevent us using the mechanics.

Actually, fire maps nicely onto the fourth state of matter, plasma, as much as people in Greek times had the opportunity to experience it.

Actually fire or flame, is (usually) too cool to be a plasma. It behaves mostly like a normal gas. Plasma behaves more like a magnetic field (or some sort of nebulous conductor) than a gas.

http://www.plasmacoalition.org/plasma_writeups/flame.pdf

Good thing too, because you wouldn’t want to be around a fire if it was radiating like plasma does. Some welding torches come close to being plasma – imagine if your hearth fire was as hot as a welding torch…

Anyway, that’s kind of off topic.

What it more relevant is that I think any attempts to systematise the understanding of dragons and Gods is doomed to failure. They aren’t going to fit into any neat little pigeon holes.

They remind me of gargoyles. One of the few species with healing (resurrection) capabilities. Do we have a close up picture?
