The Flaws Of Zergplay

I agreee This is a major design failure.

It’s not the only thing you can do in game, and for the most part it’s only temporary.

I think the devs have made clear that the Living Story will dabble in all kinds of content: dungeons, personal instances, zergs, ect. It’s good to give different players different things to do in the game.

Even though it’s not my thing personally, I’ll be glad zerging fun is there for players who want it occasionally.

Concerns about permanant invasions

Oddly enough, the Scarlet invasions don’t cause the waypoints to go contested.

Or the map and its events to change or react AT ALL. I find this to be odd (and irritating in the case of idiot centaurs attacking me instead of the giant steam creature that invaded their territory).

Charr capital?

I agree with Weindrasi. The Black Citadel is like a state capital (ie, like Richmond to Virginia or Salem to Oregon), but there probably isn’t a “national” capital right now (a la Divinity’s Reach for the humans). Without a Khan Ur, there’s no unifying force to the Legions except for the strategic need to unite against the dragons and the Flame Legion.

What's your charr war band?

Tsumedenko Rawr.

Since the game doesn’t give any lore help for new players when creating a character, I came up with that name without knowing how charr names worked. My friends now joke I’m part of the “Raw” warband, and my warbandmates just added a “r” to my name to be snarky. Sure sounds like Euryale.

Warband support, worth takin?

in Charr

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

This used to be true back in beta where you’re legion would determine what NPC you would have. But sinds the release, every legions offers exactly the same 2 generic NPCs but with just a different skin.

You have a melee NPC wich grants 3 stacks of might for 10sec and can throw a sword to cripple its target. And you have a Ranged NPC wich shoots your foes, has also a weaker version of Brutal Shot and lays a mine wich hardknocks everything around it for 4sec.

Are you sure that’s the case? I started playing well after the game release, and I definitely had Ash Legion warbandmates that did the standard “Ash Legion blind” attack.

Now if only I could summon my sparring partner from my personal story… :/

This is true. For veteran players who know how to dodge and understand Alpha’s mechanics, P3 is easiest. If you’re dragging in people who are new to the dungeon, though, do yourself and them a favor and do the submarine escape in P1.

The Quality of Scarlet's character?

in Lore

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

I like her personality and voice, but she’s smart. Impossibly smart.

I’m confused as to how she could graduate from even one college, let alone all three. Or how any one of them would accept her, given how they never have before and have shown no signs of letting stupid bookahs in since.

Or how every asura within Tyria hadn’t already heard of Scarlet? Seems to me any asura player character ears should have perked the minute Scarlet’s name was mentioned by the aetherblades.

Scarlet is a Villian Sue. Whereas the oft-compared Joker isn’t good at everything and is often undone by his own hubris, Scarlet is a flat character with no motivation so far. I really hope ANet can rescue her and make her interesting and understandable, but given how ANet’s history of Mary Sues and non-complex characters, I don’t hold out much hope.

Why are Sylvaries allowed to join the..

in Lore

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

They’re allowed to join, but from what I can tell? Not all information is shared equally in the Order. The Lightbringers operate with a broad set of knowledge they can draw on, but agents act on a “need to know” basis.

And the Master quietly pulls the strings and determines things with his identity and whereabouts kept a close secret.

This is my thought, as well. Still, the Master of Whispers does reveal herself to the player character, even if that player is a Sylvari. She must have made a calculation that the Tree can be trusted with the knowledge of her identity (or perhaps has a way to block that knowledge from bleeding into the Dream?).

OP has a point, though. The Order is…sometimes bad akittens job.

It’d be interesting to see the various orders come into direct conflict in a future storyline, and how the Tree would react to that.

New Dungeons!

I can think of many paths that take longer then 10 to 15 minutes.

And that’s if you have a team that can skip (not a good idea when you have a new person who doesn’t understand the dungeon yet, i.e.). Not to mention that a lot of skipping was nerfed by the last dungeon patch, where events won’t take place until you’ve dealt with the last one.

Greatsword favoritism

Except for The Crossing, I have not seen a staff I like yet. This sucks as I have almost 2k hours on a staff elementalist, and that staff is clearly meant for necros.

Please Anet, release a nice staff for once.

There are a few very nice stakitten , though there probably aren’t as many as greatswords.

I’ve always thought Deathwish is pretty striking: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Deathwish.jpg

And looking over the wiki’s gallery of stakitten (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gallery_of_staves), I think the charr staff (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Charr_Staff.jpg) and the inquest staff (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Inquest_Staff.jpg) are cool looking.

But, yeah, there has been a lot of love given to Greatswords and some other weapons have gotten a lot of lame entries by comparison recently.

Should *Commander Seals* be removed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

The OP has a moot point, since the ANet devs have already said they won’t be removing the Commander Seals since folks already paid a lot of money for them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some new functionality did get added to them, or if guilds with enough reputation gained access to an ability to have their leaders show up as a different color hat/symbol on the map.

Pretty sure the recent change to the gold and token output at the end of the dungeon was what they meant by “revamp.”

Does ArenaNet regret Dynamic Events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

Yeah, I was disappointed with the Living Story beginning with Flame & Frost, how the Living Story events didn’t effect the world AT ALL. Flame Legion would pop out right outside of Butcher’s Block and – nope! – Meatober fest just goes on unphased.

The latest events are worse in this regard. A massive invasion begins on a map, and the dynamic events just plod on per usual. The NPCs don’t react to these horrible steam creatures at all, or – strangely – attack me but act as if there isn’t A GIANT MECHANICAL TENTACLE MONSTER HOVERING OVER YOUR HEAD, YOU STUPID CENTAUR.

Ahem.

I think people would take more notice of the Dynamic Events if they, you know, ever changed. After months of seeing the same events, though, they become easy to ignore.

Though the OP doesn’t exactly make his/her point in the most constructive way, there is a point here. It does seem as though ANet has completely relinquished all attention away from fixing the problems in their permanent content.

The new shinnies are indeed nice, and some nice changes to gameplay were definitely welcome. But there’s still a lot of persistent permanent content issues in the game that don’t seem to be getting any attention from ANet. I understand, and share some, of the OP’s frustrations.

Sir, TA is fine, if your team is not up to the challenge, that is not the game fault. And the second point you made… you don’t even know why the game is called Guild Wars do you? …

No. Almost all of TA is fine and level appropriate. The final boss of the Forward/Up path, however, is not. The difficulty spike at the final boss can’t be intended, and the boss doesn’t properly reset upon a party wipe. She’s a challenge for all the wrong reasons, requires a certain party make up (a Ranger in your party guarantees that you will be dealing with constant Silvers being summoned), and the fight doesn’t make sense in the 3rd earliest dungeon.

TA deserves a review from the dungeon team, if it even exists anymore (and evidence seems to suggest it doesn’t).

Now with comment! On Crystal Desert last night, the late night patch went live in the middle of one of the Scarlet invasions (this one in Iron March). This map was already 1/3 the way done with the event when the patch hit and killed the event (it didn’t start up again post patch).

What’s hilarious, besides all the immediate gnashing of teeth in MapChat, is that Scarlet announced, “You may have defeated my minions, but I have more…” Yeah, the minions of ANet’s patch team. =oP

Personal Merchant Express: only usable by me - why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

Funny, because I know if I didn’t summon it, I can’t use it. I think the problem lies with the people trying to use it or within yourself by thinking you are trolling when you summon it.

I think most people are used to people summoning a merchant express, which everyone CAN use. I don’t think it’s unlikely that a lot of people would try to use someone’s personal merchant as the OP describes.

I tend to agree with the OP. The merchant shouldn’t be visible to other people if they can’t use it, and it’s silly that they can’t use it in the first place. I further can see how the OP would interpret “Personal” to mean “my own merchant that I can use over and over again.” Maybe the item description should be more clear, as well.

There have been several threads in the dungeons forums about this (I made one of them!). But the developers haven’t visited that forum in months.

Unfortunately, they seem to be so focused on creating new temporary content that they’ve given up on fixing their permanent content. Hasn’t that Simin bug in Arah been a problem since the game released?

It’s not even the clipping that bothers me, really. I can pretend that there’s a hole in my pants for my tail.

But you see some of the pictures of the floating shoulder pads, or the new helmets that completely remove a charr’s ears and/or horns – it’s like the ANet designers flipping the kitten right at any player who wants to play a charr.

Why do we have 'town clothes'?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

Part of the problem with the town clothes implementation is that the game doesn’t automatically switch you to town clothes when you enter a freaking town – it doesn’t even give you the setting option. It certainly is a strange design choice. Why include town clothes at all when no one will ever see them?

What’s sad is the problem is getting worse – not better – after so many players have mentioned it. It’s one thing to not have time to fix some of the older armors, but to be designing the new armors with these same problems, or in some cases blatant disdain for these issues, shows a disregard for ANet’s players.

They’ve outright said it’s not worth their time to make stuff for charr so I doubt any thing will ever be fixed.

When did they say that?

In a recent interview, one of the devs was directly asked (the first question, even) if charr armor would be addressed. He said it was easier designing armor for humans and then applying it to the other races, and he doesn’t foresee that changing.

But applying it to the other races should also mean updating it so it, you know, fits. We should keep pressing for a proper response.

azureai.9764

There are plenty of human armors that need tweaking to fix clipping, too.

Granted, I’m sure Charr have it worse, but it’s currently nothing racial exclusive at this point, either.

Um, no.

Humans don’t have clipping to the point where body parts extrude out of their armor.
Humans don’t have shoulders armor that floats magically off of their bodies.
Humans don’t have whole portions of their skull and face removed by helmets.

There’s some clipping in certain human armors, sure. But that is in no way comparable to the issues with charr armors. And issues with charr armors are getting worse, not better.

Seriously, a helmet shouldn’t chop off a charr’s horns when the designers can just put in some holes into the helmets.

A noob's take on things

azureai.9764

I agree with those who have said that the game doesn’t do a good job explaining itself in-game. It assuredly doesn’t, and I know I only had a sliver of an idea of what I was doing because a friend showed me. I can’t imagine as a new player without that resource that I would have been any less lost than the original poster.

That being said, the OP’s story about crafting does seem to indicate s/he didn’t talk things out with the NPCs fully, or maybe didn’t understand that Rangers are a medium armored class. I’d suggest that the OP take things slowly early on, have full conversations with any NPCs trying to help him/her, and type /wiki in the chat bar any time s/he encounters something s/he doesn’t understand.

As a brand new player, I’d ignore Living Story right now. It’s really geared toward people who have a firm understanding of the game and have done most of the permanent features of the game to death. This Living Story segment is particularly not newbie-friendly. When you get to Level 50 and feel settled in your class and build, then the Living Story might be a more valuable use of your time. But for now, it’s probably not going to teach you anything and, worse, will scare you off the game.
