Armor repair has no purpose anymore

Necropost level = 2 years.

It’s important to note that in the 2 years of players complaining about the armor repair mechanic being a useless waste-of-time, they still haven’t removed it.

Either update the system so it serves a function or remove it, please, ANet.

Also stop giving me those worthless instant repair cans from my Black Lion stuff. GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I made a similar thread a few weeks ago. I don’t think anyone would be opposed to the idea.

Yeah, I’m not surprised someone has suggested a similar idea before, though I’m sorry I didn’t see the thread to support it.

Like I said, I’m SHOCKED this hasn’t been implemented some five years in. Seems like an easy fix for clothes kittens like us.

But I will say that if you have a specific look you really like, it’s not that hard to make a Word doc …

It’s a circumstantial solution that’s still tedious and annoying. Like, you still need to mouse over all the similar dyes to find the right name, you still have to do similar for the armor in the wardrobe, you still likely have to tab to the .doc if you don’t have 2 monitors, you’re likely not going to do this change on a whim unless you’re really quick.

I agree. It’s a swell workaround for now, but it is needlessly tedious given that this suggestion seems like a small quality of life ask from the game’s lovely developers.

ANet -

I’m shocked this hasn’t been implemented yet, but I would KILL for this:

  • Outfits slots you can create using your own mix-and-match armor pieces.
  • A multiple of these slots so you can switch your character’s dress for some kind of cost.

I love dressing up my character. But I haven’t changed his armor in YEARS because I know if I do, I’m going to have difficulty returning to that look if I’d like to down the road. So, I resist changing it. Ever. All those nice little add ons that ArenaNet uses to drive its sales or reward certain gameplay – they’re no attraction to me.

If I could design my own outfits and save them, though, I would gobble those items up. My outfits would be preserved without me having to kitten around with multiple armor pieces and remember the exact dyes I used.

I can’t be the only player who feels this way, and the solution seems simple. Please, ANet, make more money from players like me. Give us outfit slots which we, ourselves, can design.

As others have stated: The good design in the PvE game that leads it to have a positive community focus. Players are rewarded for helping other players by doing things like ressing. No one is competing for nodes. There are multiple systems in place that not only encourage players to be kind to each other, but REWARD them for being so. I love the atmosphere of the game, and it stems from thoughtful, wonderful design.

Also, CHARR. Man, the lore in this game is so engaging. Great worldbuilding.

Race should matter! A short rant.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

azureai.9764

Even with buffing them, there is no reason to believe that any one race would become the “optimal race” for any given clakittenace may be more flavorful for a class or provide a little extra utility for a particular build, but it wouldn’t become the “optimal”… and even if the tryhard elitists think “you must be a Charr Warrior” or whatever, if things are balanced properly (which wouldn’t be too hard to balance a mere 14 skills against each other). The skills only have to be balanced against other racial utility skills and compared to similar class skills.

As much as I’d like race to matter more – this point is wrong. Have you met a min-maxer before? I know the type in person, and that’s exactly what they will do. Other games have played this out, going back to MUDs in the 90s, and probably tabletop games before that. This critique isn’t based on assumption – it’s based on evidence from games previous to this.

Race should matter. But it was a good decision that race doesn’t matter as to stats.

So if you write 1 line on a piece of paper or 1 line on 5 pieces of paper, you dont make 5 times the work.

I would like to hire you mate.

Yeah – no, mate. You minimize the amount of storywork that is not dialogue. That is to say – the vast, VAST majority of work in setting up a story. When’s the last time you read a book or wrote a story that was just conversation? It’s not often (or usually good) when a line of speech is what was the primary driver of an entire scene. Usually an author will think of structure, then lay the dialogue on top of that. Dialogue – while important – is not the primary focus of a story, it comes last and usually quickest.

Editing 5 sets of dialogue when the story structure and action is already set is not 5x the work. It’s even less work, say, when someone has already set up the scene and character models for all the characters that will be used in the story instance.

Again, I concede it will be more work. I do not concede – however – that it will be an unreasonable amount of work, considering the goodwill and dividends it will pay.

it would mate its 5 times nor time consuming then making it one story fits all.

Yeah, no. Tweaking the dialogue or characters in one scenario depending on race is not the same as making 5 separate scenarios. Even making the tasks/approaches different is not the same as “5 times” more work.

Would it be more work? Yeah. Would it make players feel more appreciated and their choices have more weight? Definitely. I’d welcome even small nods to who my character is and the choices he’d made. Heck, I’d love it if my character even behaved a little more in-character instead of like a human all the time.

As much fun as it might seem to have the races matter more in build, I have to agree with the folks who’ve said that it’s better game design that the races don’t matter that way. Min-maxing would ultimately lead to certain race/classes being optimum. It would ruin race choices for folks.

However – I am totally on board with the OP that race should matter a whole lot more in game story. Even in how characters interact with you in text. There were nods to it here and there in Season 2 (giving Rytlock the crown, for instance), or how charr talk to Rytlock in HoT. But often it is irritatingly overlooked. My charr should NOT act like a human. And a couple of story instances where things go differently depending on your race (i.e. different tactics or tasks leading toward similar conclusions) would not be that incredibly time consuming.

Someone beat me to this thread, I see! I was going to wait until the “Worst Maps” topic I posted died down before posting this one. Guess I’ll have to come up with something else entertaining down the line.

To answer the question with my Top 5 faves:
1. Fireheart Rise – I dig the aesthetic. Lots of charr, and it’s cool to see so many Ash Legion in action. You meet TWO Ash tribunes here. I love the events. The mini dungeons are really entertaining, especially Vexa’s Lab.
2. Silverwastes. Could spend a lot of time here. The map meta feels easy to follow, participate in, and rewarding to complete. Plus Solus the Outlier is a hilarious charr.
3. Cursed Shore. There are both massive events here and minor ones you can do on your own. Lots of crannies to explore, and the mobs aren’t pushovers. This area keeps me entertained.
4. Fields of Ruin. I really like the takes on Ebonhawke and the negotiations are Warrior’s Crown. Order of Whispers agents will be interested to learn who are plants for the Order in the negotiations.
5. Ember Bay. I think this is the Season 3 map done best. I like the repeatable hearts giving me goals. I dig assisting the Skritt. I love the lore dripping on the map. And the circus people are just bizarre. This is a map I enjoy going back to.

Honorable mention to Black Citadel. I can understand non-charr griping – it’s not the easiest city to explore. But to me, it does feel like home. And since the megasevers came only, it’s full of charr players all the time.

Charr credibility

azureai.9764

And what if I like playing a softie Charr like Tybalt? In fact the seriousness and agressieveness of the Charr is off putting to me, even though I love the race.

And even thought the dialogues are empathic, the voice acting makes it sound like a rough person who just says that to “try”, not like he actually cares or feels something…

You can. In your text responses and interactions, you’re often given choices – especially early on. But most charr are not soft. They are blunt. And it’s not unreasonable for a charr player to assume his/her charr will behave like most charr.

The problem with GW2's writing...

in Lore

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

The major problem with ANet’s writing is they don’t follow this principal: “SHOW, DON’T TELL.”

Trahearne, Scarlett, and even Taimi to some extent, are all victims of ANet’s “tell” philosophy. They simply show up, and we’re TOLD why these characters are supposed to be so great. Why they’re the most knowledgeable. Why we should respect them.

That’s not good storytelling in an interactive narrative. The characters come off as Mary/Villain Sues. They aren’t respected because we haven’t interacted in a way to make us respect them. When characters are sewn into the storyline so that we see their accomplishments – we SEE what they are capable of – then it will be more impactful when something great or terrible comes of them.

But then again, ANet’s writers are just going to kill off every other character for shock value, so best not to get too interested in them anyways. You likely won’t have time.

Also, the missing charr warband is ABSOLUTE BULLKITTEN. Why are my warbandmates not in my home instance? I can’t go visit them? They wouldn’t follow me on adventures? I can’t even summon them with my racial elite? That makes no sense.

Disappointed in Trahearne's Fate

in Lore

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

And very much unlike the new batch of NPCs, with Trahearne I actually felt that he was my friend, that he was always glad to see me or work with me, that he knew he the Pact needed me and trusted me with it in return.

Are you a sylvari on your main, by chance? Part of the reason non-sylvari players tended to hate Trahearne is because he shows up out of NOWHERE in the personal story, then starts to take it over. He doesn’t become your friend, you’re just kind of shunted to him.

I do feel like the new guild is full of characters I know pretty well, but that’s because I played a good chunk of LS Season1. If you didn’t get the chance to do that – I can definitely understand why you wouldn’t care to know who these randos following you around are.

Straits of Devastation could use some rework

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

So once I went there they had already done the largest difficulty reductions. And I find myself really sad that I missed that, because the maps seems so obviously designed to be the first taste of harder maps in the game.

A lot of those changes were definitely necessary. Attacking a group of Risen was suicide – they’d just spam CCs non-stop. No one had the CC breaks capable of dealing that much spam. And even if you did kill a Risen, the respawn time was a matter of a second (not plural).

You couldn’t take time to explore the map. And that’s antithetical to the game. Orr mobs weren’t smartly designed, they weren’t satisfying to defeat, they were just annoying.

It would be nice to see the maps advance plot wise. Aka clearing up the undead and reconstructing Orr to its former glory.

Even if there was a plot advancement, there’d still be Risen everywhere. Zhaitan’s minions didn’t die or deactivate with his death. They’re still trying to accomplish the Elder Dragon’s mission.

Will we see Tengu playable in gw2's life?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The only way I can see us getting new races is if we get a separate part of the world to explore where only the new races can reside. Basically a parallel game, on a different continent.

A new, cordoned-off area would eliminate all of the problems of backfill that prevent new races from being available.

Are Charrs Sexist?

in Lore

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

As others here have said, charr society was definitely sexist prior to the schism between the four High Legions, due to Flame Legion’s influence on the other Legions.

Blood Legion was the first to change it’s tune – it needed more soldiers, and the charr females were ready to assume the role. Iron Legion resisted until Kalla Scorchrazor beat the kitten out of the Iron Legion Imperitor, Forge Ironstrike. Ash – usually seen at the Legion closest to Flame, but generally the most pragmatic of the Legions – was the last Legion to accept female equality.

Only Flame Legion continues to insist on the inequity of the sexes in charr society, and the in the other High Legions, you’ll be hard pressed in modern times to find examples of sexism. Flame’s repression of its females is used by the other Legions as another example of why Flame must be crushed.

Physically speaking- male charr are said to be larger and stronger, but female charr are quicker.

Though charr males undeniably tend to be bigger than charr females, the differential of strength or agility between males and females seems to be, in reality, minimal. There are tons of beefy charr females in service to the Legions. One even leads the Vigil.

I suspect part of the Flame Legion’s sexism comes from the real-world conundrum that a population that loses more males than females rebounds much faster than one that loses equal numbers of each (Assuming a single male is capable of impregnating multiple females), regardless of the physical and intellectual ability of the sexes.

The Flame Legion’s sexism actually stems from the real world conundrum that Guild Wars 1 didn’t feature any female charr models.

Yeah, charr lore was definitely shaped to account for that.

1) The population on the game is still fairly high. You won’t go onto any map without running into someone at some point. When I came back, I was shocked how the racial cities like the Black Citadel (which used to be empty) are now full of players all the time. Meta events always have a large crowd of players doing them.

2) Balance depends on what you’re playing. In PvE, pretty much everything is viable. But in PvP, WvW and raids – there are balance issues that players on these forums have been discussing.

3) You don’t need the expansion right away unless you want to be a Revenant. Most of HoT’s benefits take place after you get to Level 80. But once you get there, I highly suggest the expansion – if only for the gliding. OMG – being able to glide anywhere in the game makes travelling through Tyria a hundred times better!

[Suggestion] Elite Specs for Old Weapons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azureai.9764

azureai.9764

A lot of folks were happy with the new directions that the Elite Specs gave to the old classes. But I found myself disappointed that the first wave of Elites didn’t build on anything I already liked about my characters. The choice boiled down to play with all new toys or don’t use the Elite. The Elites don’t play nice with the other trait lines you learned on and worked so hard to get.

Now that we have additional Elites that add new toys (and it looks like we’ll be getting another wave of those), why not introduce Elites that focus on improving what you already like about the base class?

For instance:
New, Swappable Weapon Skills: Introduce Elites that give new Ability options to the current weapons. Don’t like your old Guardian Scepter 1 (“Orb of Wrath”)? Swap it out with the new Elite version – but you can keep the Scepter 2 and 3 that you like. Gives players new options to customize their character without the necessity of adding new weapons (you’re going to run out of weapons to add to classes at some point, Anet).
Buffs to Unique Skill Types: Focus down on some of the unique skills that make the base classes interesting. Running a Engineer that likes her some Turrets? Your Thief interested in dabbling in some new Venoms? Here’s an Elite that gives you some new tools, traits and buffs to specialize in those fields.

These kind of Elites, in concert with the “New Toys” Elites, would give players more customization over characters they’ve had for nearly 5 years now. And by carefully balancing the new “Improvement” Elites and rolling them out over time (i.e., the first couple of “Improvement” Elites may focus on a single mainhand, offhand, and/or dual hand weapon) – that will give players a reason to revisit unique features in their class that they grew to love.

tl;dr: I’d like some new options without having to play essentially a different class.

I think its more of a reminder that you are bad at what you are doing. Its kind of like downed state that is so completely forgiving that you never get better at the game, until you are downed 4 times in 60seconds.

The downed state has also been getting progressively useless, what with all the AOEs of stacking doom in the HoT areas that will just near-instantly kill you if you get downed.

azureai.9764

Yeah, I hate the current Mastery system and its waste-of-experience gating. If you’re stuck on getting your next set of points for a while, it’s such a kitten feelbad. Given that GW2 early on successfully avoided this very same problem when characters reached level 80, I’m surprised to see they introduced it with HoT.

I doubt it would have been difficult to automatically funnel XP into a different, available mastery line if you reach the gate and don’t notice. Or to implement something akin to the above suggestions of a repeatable mastery.

I’d love this first suggestion, too, and I was thinking about a separate Mastery Track with different repeatable masteries, each with another reward, so players could choose, which mastery they would invest their experience into.
Players could choose their reward (hrmmmm …. even laurels, maybe? ) and ArenaNet would have easy access to which rewards are offered to the players by activating or deactivating these respective masteries. Plus, ArenaNet could easily control the amount of experience points needed for each reward (considering the “in-game worth” of the respective reward).

I like this idea.

Then when you feel comfortable, you can always pop back to one of your higher level characters. They’ll still be there.

I truly hate that spirit weapons are just stupid pets now like any other classes’. It’s irritating to see how un-unique they are.

I think the above suggestions that they become an additional weapon – maybe doing something alongside your 1 attack and having an activation ability that shatters them – would be awesome and unique. I also wish they didn’t have an HP bar. Now that we have the defiance bar technology, they should instead get a defiance bar that when broken causes the weapon to shatter.

Well, Guardians aren’t supposed to be great at ranged, so…maybe not? When Longbow was first released, I understood LB Guardians to be playing the game on “easy mode”.

My major gripe with the elite specs is they introduce a whole lot of things and synergize with NOTHING. If you liked any aspect of your previous build – congrats! – there’s nothing in the elite tree for you. They should have done a better job integrating traits from other trees into supporting the new shineys from the elite tree.

Characters I like in GW2:

Caithe, Scarlet and Rox.

I dislike pretty much the rest of all characters in gw2. I think most characters and dialogues in GW2 are cringe, cliché and are hard to take seriously. It feels kid-friendly and amateurish.
What do you guys think?

Hard to take a complaint seriously when they cite Scarlet as an example of un-amateurish. She was the most Villain Sue character I have EVER encountered. Nintendo’s Bowser has more depth than she did. And he’s not even perfectly perfect at everything.

You are right that ANet’s writing isn’t their strong suit. They make good characters, but tend to underuse them or kill them off for “depth.” And comedic characters are definitely their stronger suit, along with their top-notch world building.

In the end, there are tons of interesting characters in GW2, but a lot of them just don’t get much screen time because the only times you get to interact are in the small number of story instances. I’ve noticed NPCs in the HoT and beyond areas often don’t even have dialogue boxes when you try to talk to them. Disappointing.

It’d be better if you could run into someone like Rox in the open world, and not just when you get a story instance 3 months down the road.

You mind peruse the “Looking for…” forums and find a PvE guild to join. There are some real good and active ones there. And guildies could give ya lots of adventures to go on and join in.

You can also go to one of the Aestheticians – like the one in the Trader’s Forum of Lions Arch – to get a preview of what you could do with a Makeover Kit. If you’re inclined, you can buy a makeover kit from her.

Some thoughts about the good NPCs in game

Yeah, unfortunately, a lot of good characters were either dropped (especially from the early personal story) or were killed off ANet style for little to no effect.

You’d think the personal story characters would at least show up in your home instance. I want to see my charr’s warband show up now and again!

Yeah – if someone on this thread is having trouble with this fight – just ask a friend to help. They might even get an achievement out of it.

Just not my thing. Glad it’s there for others, but sometimes you can tell something’s not for you just by looking.

It really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to ease yourself back into the game, a less complex class like Guardian or Warrior would probably be best. Their mechanics are fairly simple to use and understand.

Race won’t matter except to the extent that you’re looking to enjoy the storyline and lore of the game.

If you’re looking for a Guild, look no farther than the Looking for… forums right here. Tons of Guilds are always advertising there.

The GW2 wiki is full of lore articles. Just look up one of the races you’re interested in, and you’ll be awash with a lore rabbit hole to follow for a while.

There are also GW2 tumblrs dedicated to lore. If you’re interested in a particular topic, it’s pretty easy to start a discussion here or on the GW2 reddit.
