Really? Are you lot still on about this? Maybe if you’d worked a little harder and put in a few more votes you wouldn’t be in this mess.

Why don’t you have a demonstration against yourselves for letting Evon down so spectacularly … you should be ashamed!

Condition Cap in PvE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

binidj.5734

Whether it is an arbitrary limit or not, the current system is broken as it means that direct damage characters will always be able to contribute 100% where condition damage characters will not. Until both types of damage are able to contribute 100% then the system will be broken.

I am not a developer but that does not mean that I cannot say “this thing is broken, it really needs to be fixed” and trust that the Devs are sufficiently competent at their jobs to be able to find their own solutions to the issue.

OP

I Hope They Resolve this as soon as possible.

But they won’t. This issue has been brought up many different times with not even a single response from the dev team.

That’s not true, the textured AE circles are clear evidence that the Dev Team have been listening to the community. There’s more that could be done of course but it would be wrong (and counter-productive) to say that they’ve done nothing.

Daily Activity: variety is the spice of life

On the first day of the recent “Activities” slot for the daily, we saw a variety of activities on offer. Since then we’ve seen only one activity available per day in Lion’s Arch. It would be really nice if all the activities could be done on any day.

I say this because I really enjoy one of the activities available (I’m not saying which one because I don’t want to be responsible for derailing my own thread) but I’m not so keen on the others. Now regardless of whether it would get me a daily achievement or not, I would like to be able to participate in my favoured activity more than a couple of times a week. Of course it would be very nice if I could choose which activity contributed toward my daily but even so, I just want to be able to play my favoured activity whenever I am at a bit of a loose end.

Thieves are OP in solo or small group encounters in WvW. On the bright side a perma-stealth thief is pretty obvious, so just leave them to it unless you’re playing a profession with infinite AE … and even then it can be tedious.

Good news though! I guarantee that once my Thief reaches level 80 the profession will be nerfed into the ground the following week. =)

“Exploit early, exploit often”

Before any moderators think of banning me for that, I do NOT mean the “illegal” sort of exploiting, and I don’t think that was what the people who I’ve heard use it mean either. It means that if there’s something in the game that is both profitable and fun then you’d best do it as much as you can as soon as you can because it will be nerfed before too long.

Dump the torch event

Step 1. Walk the route beforehand, figure out what will be the most efficient way of doing it. This was the most fun part for me. With no time constraints you are free to take it easy, much more fun than trying to do it “on the fly” so to speak. If there’s a tricky bit (the jump in the arboretum can be a source of delay) then this gives you the chance to practice.

Step 2. Get a speed buff from one of the nearby shrines. The divine buffs last about 3 minutes which is quite long enough to get to the course and finish it … even if you have to use a waypoint. I discovered this just before my last run, things would have been so much simpler had I thought about it beforehand.

Following these two steps will pretty much guarantee success at any of the routes. Also don’t forget to look at your mini-map during the run to see if there are any torches you missed in your initial walkthrough that might mean a re-evaluation of your route.

The agony of Charr armor. (Long read)

I so wanted to get a set of Magitech armour for my Iron Legion engineer but I just cannot live with the dreadful tail-clipping. I can understand that creating multiple sets of each armour style would be a nightmare but I cannot see why all body/leg armour can’t be designed to incorporate a tail and its animations. Head armour is something else entirely as the only races that works on consistently are humans and norn, everyone else gets clipping or a removal of features altogether … honestly I think the only way around that is to create different helm designs for each race. As for pauldrons (shoulder armour) surely they can adjust the stretching such that the armour doesn’t appear to float in mid-air.

TL;DR: ArenaNet could sell more gems (for armour sets or transmutation crystals) if only they’d add a tail slit or flap to their designs as standard.

if gw2 was a more captivating and lore filled game then i might actually know what Abaddon is

Abaddon has only historical relevance to GW2 but was central to the story of the GW1 “Nightfall” expansion, and I think his lore probably featured in other parts of GW1 too. He is only mentioned in a very few places in GW2’s Tyria, the most obvious place that springs to mind is the tapestry at the top of the Vizier’s Tower in Orr. If you aren’t interested in listening to dialogue or reading in-game text though (ie. if you’re not really bothered about the lore to start with) then you wouldn’t have come across Abaddon in GW2.

For context he was the human god who first made primal magic (which was later split into different parts by the other gods following much wailing and destruction) available to “mortal” races, and who was killed in a battle with the rest of the human pantheon which resulted in the Crystal Sea being turned into the Crystal Desert. He’s a pretty huge deal but for the current game, only in terms of putting things into context … or joining a few dots here and there.

Congratulations for … a fractal that has no relevance to the game.

Abaddon has relevance to GW1 and very little relevance (beyond historical context) to GW2; on the other hand the Thaumanova incident is directly connected to one of the primary stories of GW2. I’m sorry but your statement is just flat-out wrong. By all means feel upset that you won’t be getting the Abaddon fractal right away but making arguments that are clearly not correct is unlikely to win you any points. Of course I’d like to see the war between the human gods, but I’d like to learn about current game lore more.

If Kiel had the Abaddon fractal on her list instead of Gnashblade, she would’ve had a landslide victory. That fractal was the only thing that kept him relevant.

Speaking personally I would far rather have given my vote to a charr than a human, if Evon had been connected with the Thaumanova fractal it would have made my decision much easier … though there would still be the whole tacit support of RNG thing but frankly that was a minor consideration for me.

The 52% that voted Kiel didn’t vote for her fractal, they voted for her.

Way to speak for 52% of people who don’t agree with you. I voted very positively for the Thaumanova fractal because I care deeply about current lore (probably as much as many others do about GW1 lore … which I’ve had to get a grounding in anyway for context) and want to know more about the Inquest experiments and how they (literally) managed to break the fabric of reality.

Thaumanova has been confirmed to relate to all six of the Elder Dragons, which are far more important than the human gods.

Really? Can you provide a source for that? Because I don’t recall seeing anything of the kind. Several posts have been made linking Thaumanova to the Crucible of Eternity but I’m not aware of any lore (beyond that they are both Inquest projects) that connects the two. All the in-game evidence I’ve seen would actually suggest that they are quite distinct from each other. So provide ArenaNet sources please when you use words like “confirmed”.

It was in the latest livestream.

Most recent livestream on my YouTube feed is the Bazaar of the Four Winds one (which I don’t think covers Thaumanova/Infinity Coil) … so if you know of a more recent one a link would be welcomed.

"We know the Abaddon story" - no we don't

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: binidj.5734

binidj.5734

We already know what happened with Thaumanova. The Inquest were experimenting using the reactor to harness dragon energy, it overloaded and exploded. We already know the consequences of it, enemies from all around the world get teleported into it and a Golem tries to clean it up and brings in a huge fire elemental instead. The end.

The Inquest are doing the exact same thing at Crucible of Eternity. It is LITERALLY Thaumanova 2.0 but specifically designed to handle their experiments rather than just hijacking an existing reactor for it. It too is failing however and players and Destiny’s Edge/Pact have to shut it down.

I think you are mistaken, the thaumic reactors (yes, there’s more than one … only Thaumanova blew up) don’t draw on draconic energy, if they did the result would be a lot more corrupted creatures than we see; instead what comes out of the tears in reality are regular (if confused) creatures. There is no evidence that I know of to tie Kudu (“isn’t that a girl’s name?”) to the thaumic reactors beyond being in the Inquest, and I don’t think that’s enough. As far as I’m aware, only Kudu got heavily involved in researching dragons, the Inquest has other (equally unsavoury) branches.

I consider it rather more likely that the thaumic reactors are experimenting with primordial (pre-bloodstone) magic somehow … and the possible repercussions of that are fascinating.

Abaddon was the one who gave the power behind the great cataclysm that sunk orr, to the Vizier Khilbron in order to defeat the Charr who were invading the human kingdoms….although the Vizier may not have know the power was from abaddon when he acquired it, turning himself into the Lich in the process.

Pretty sure that Khilbron did know he was getting his power from Abaddon as there’s a tapestry depicting the god in the Vizier’s Tower (8mins 7 seconds into this video) which really must have been put there prior to the sinking.

He pretty much shaped the world into what it is today. He’s affected everything Gw2.

Nobody is disputing the affect that Abaddon had on the world, but there is a greater chance that the current campaign could be affected by what we learn from Thaumanova than what we learn from a centuries-old battle between absentee gods that we already know the result of. Yes of course it would be cool to see the battle but I don’t think it stands to add as much to the game as Thaumanova.

Why the Abaddon Fractal is Irrelevant

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: binidj.5734

binidj.5734

I actually don’t really like Fractals all that much……and Abaddon would be THE thing to get me to play. Another asura related thing is just going to turn me off it even more.

I am exactly the opposite, if there’s a chance that we finally get to see what caused the Thaumanova incident (clue: it wasn’t draconic energy or everything popping out of the portals would be a dragon minion … because that’s what exposure to draconic energy does to most living things) then I’d be very keen to start doing fractals. For me the Thaumanova Reactor, far from being an Inquest snoozefest is actually a fascinating opportunity to explore the lore. In fact I’m of the opinion that the Inquest are somehow tapping into primordial magic (ie. the powerful stuff that was originally gifted by Abaddon) which they can manage in small quantities (there appears to be a stable thaumic reactor in the “Thaumacore Inquiry Center” in Brisban Wildlands) but when they tried it on a larger scale … the world’s fabric was torn apart. The ramifications of that are HUGE. Though they might also be tapping into the Mists … which has a whole different set of alarm bells attached to it.

The key thing here is that there is something to be learned from a Thaumanova fractal. I can’t see how an Abaddon fractal would advance the lore, it might answer a few questions and fill in a few blanks but I don’t see any potential for new information to be gleaned from it. Yes it’d be cool to see a sea turn into a desert, to see the Margonites … but this is all stuff that we know about. It would be cool, yes but I don’t think that it has the potential to add to the story we’re playing now.

Besides which, human gods … pfft!

The Social Experiment - Good vs Evil

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: binidj.5734

binidj.5734

Conclusion
This social experiment is simply to test the human nature. Do we go for the ‘good’ guy which offers crap. Or do we go for the ‘evil’ guy that offers good stuff. Simply put, are you willing to sell your soul to the devil just for your rewards?

The rewards actually blur the issue rather more than you suggest.

Waypoint/Keys
The reduction in cost of keys is only worthwhile for people that buy the things, now I’m not going to throw imaginary figures about the place but I’m pretty certain that I am not alone in never having bought a key since launch. On the other hand, everyone uses waypoints (except people who play exclusively PvP/WvW for whom all this is largely academic anyway) so that will be the default preference if you aren’t a fan of RNG boxes.

Abaddon/Thaumanova
This choice again isn’t as straightforward as you might think, those of us who didn’t play/enjoy GW1 have no incentive at all to choose the Fall of Abaddon (even to those of us who have actually taken something of an interest in Tyrian lore) as it either doesn’t matter or doesn’t have many questions associated with it. The Thaumanova Reactor incident, on the other hand, is probably more interesting for those whose primary experience of Tyria is GW2 and for whom the Inquest experiments into Thaumaturgy (which possibly also impacts on bloodstones and true magic … we don’t know) is a more engaging (and relevant) story.

Conclusion
Perhaps it’s just me being contrary but although my first inclination would be to vote for Gnashblade (purely on the basis that he’s a charr and they are, by default, more interesting than humans) I’m actually supporting Kiel because of the rewards she offers.

Except that this isn’t a break at all, there is an event right up near the Zephyr Sanctum that involves us helping to repel an Aetherblade strike team. Good Job Anet

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

Posted by: binidj.5734

binidj.5734

I agree, this is my favourite LS episode since Fire and Frost (and in quite a few ways is actually better) with a good variety and puzzles that aren’t about having the twitchiest finger but about being able to think! Also it’s very pretty and I’m quite intrigued by the story already. Good job all round.

Criticisms are relatively few, but I found Belcher’s Bluff pretty tedious as the NPC opponents spam their special abilities entirely too much. I don’t know if this is working as intended or not, and I know that some people have completed all of them … it’s just that I’m not having fun with it. Don’t care about the achievement as there are plenty of ways to reach the target (a massive plus over Aetherblade) but it’s a little bit of a disappointment.

It’s also a touch annoying to have to drop your aspects in order to take part in the various events and then have to pick them up again. There’s at least one spot where taking part in an event (Ice Elemental) will strand you, forcing participants to use a waypoint.

Also insert obligatory “Stop putting stuff in the Obsidian Sanctum” gripe, here. If you want to encourage people to go into WvW then why not put them in the regular areas … maybe put quartz nodes in the borderlands or something. ObSanct is not a decent representation of how much fun WvW can be.

On the whole though, my complaints are minor in the face of such an overwhelmingly fine LS episode; thanks ANet!

I really enjoy WvW but I hate the Obsidian Sanctum, all the more so when you get packs of players camping the choke-points. There are a couple of people in my guild who are very reluctant to try WvW because they think it’s all like that accursed jumping puzzle.

Simple solution would be to make all players “friendly” in the map … while keeping the traps and boulders functioning as normal (maybe controlling a trap makes you attackable by other players for a period of time). That way things become challenging and, dare I say it, tactical … rather than frustrating.

No living story deserves to be this hard

Not everything in the game can be a faceroll.

Nor would I want it to be, however making challenging content temporary basically silos it off from the casual player. If you’re a skilled player then you can complete the Aetherblade Retreat and get the Obsidian Sanctum cache with ease; however if you’re a casual player who takes time to practice in an effort to overcome challenges then content that doesn’t give you time to practice puts it out of your reach.

As it stands, I won’t make it through the boss fights in Aetherblade Retreat unless I’m carried; give me a couple of months on it though and I might be looking at getting some of the achievements (eg. Faster Than Light). As for the Obsidian Sanctum cache, well some groups appear to be using that as an excuse to farm PvE players, and because it’s a short window of opportunity there’s more PvEers than normal passing through the puzzle.

In short, if your content is temporary then actually yes, it does need to be “faceroll easy” or, as we casuals like to call it “normal difficulty.” If content is permanent then make it as challenging as you like, we’ll have all the time in the world to go back and practice if we want to.

I tested it yesterday evening in Lion’s Arch and it absolutely did not work with differences in z-axis. Given the responses here I might go back and test it a bit more but it feels very much broken to me.

Give it a go, you might enjoy it. I enjoyed it up to Fizz, at which point all enthusiasm was gradually leeched away. However it seems that some people are really enjoying the challenging nature of it so you might too.

Hated the fight, probably won’t go back again. Clearly some people are really enjoying it and it’s great that there is content for them but it’s not for everyone.

I think Street.2176 may just be upset that ACs got a bit nerfed recently, and is just lashing out … clearly we made an impression in our recent match-up.

Poor little chap, I say we just let him get this tantrum out of his system.

There is nothing wrong with the health of the holgram mobs, what is broken is the downscaling mechanic that allows level 80s to 1-shot mobs in low-level zones. If you’re fighting in a zone appropriate to your level then I think you that you will find that the mobs have an appropriate amount of health.

Does ArenaNet have a gambling license to sell these boxes anyway?

You don’t need one for virtual items, as you don’t even own your account.

Hopefully this loophole of law will be fixed sometime soon. Item Mall games really need some sort of regulation.

Perhaps that is why the items aren’t tradeable; If you could sell them then you could convert the gold gained back into gems, which many well contravene a few gambling laws worldwide.

There are other threads about the frustrations (or otherwise) of the chest/coffer/crate mechanic for weapon skins and other items, please let’s not turn this into another one.

Do you buy seasonal containers from the Gem Store? If you don’t, would you buy items like weapon skins directly? Or do you rely exclusively on farming world drops?

There is some debate to be had about which approach would give NCSoft the better return. While I acknowledge that this thread is hardly likely to be statistically significant, it might give the in-house economist a nudge to look into it.

The thing is that the mob health balance is pretty much spot on … if you are fighting them in a level-appropriate zone. So what is needed is either a radical improvement to character downscaling or some kind of effective disincentive for high level characters to farm holos in low level areas.

The flip side, of course, is that as a relatively low-level character, it is quite cheap to waypoint all over the map; although if you’re of the right level for the zone, chances are you don’t have 100% completion, so the waypointing option isn’t really there.

I’d like to echo Ravezaar, had a marvellous evening fighting on JS BL, many thanks to both AR and JS for being such challenging opponents, who seem to enjoy open large-scale battles as much as us. Also spent quite a bit of time running around in a 5-person team and finding a fair number of good small-scale fights too. Even managed some one-on-ones (with varying success). All in all a great evening and I look forward to more of the same.

Well let’s go from the sublime: The riding trousers and boots are some of the best-looking medium leg and foot items in the game in terms of looking “in-keeping” and yet they are town clothes only.

To the ridiculous: The legendary pistol (the only option) is a squeaking, hooting, party-gun that, to my mind, if it fitted any thieves or engineers at all it would be a tiny minority; the “disco-ball” mace is much the same.

There are ludicrous items that can be worn into battle and sensible items that can’t, I’m not sure you can say that one particular item is any worse than another. Frankly those people who want to look daft will be able to, panda-hat or no; it’d be nice to give people the option to mix and match more skins … even if you assigned an armour type to items worn outside of town.
