GvG is not casual play. You don’t just go out and run whatever you want like in other game activities. If you want to GvG you accept that you will have to alter your build and play style to go along with your team’s strategy. I am not saying it is a good stategy, because it doesn’t sound like it is, but for GvG you subscribe to your team’s strategy or don’t participate. GvG isn’t really ideal for selfish players.

I think it was noted earlier, it should be a two way street. He should have to drop his entire build just for them, and they should have to carry what they see as weight. (Even though, as you said, Hammer is a viable choice.)There’s probably a compromise or an explanation that should make both parties happy here.
And with most guildies you expect some sort of camaraderie, understanding , and guidance out of them, not forum style berating for a preferred build. (In which case I’d agree he might want to start looking for a new guild, but I don’t know how close and established he feels in this one.)

Even then, I’m not 100% willing to say GvG would be completely free of casual play. You’ll never be legends, but I’m sure casual people have found a flow and enjoy just playing it.

There is no two way street. It is no different than insisting on playing point guard on the NBA team put him in their line up to to play center. He has the option to simply not play if he doesn’t like it.

He doesn’t have to drop anything for anyone. No one is forcing him to GvG with them. If he wants to run with a GvG group, he needs to use their builds and strategy or least theorycraft some statistically and strategically viable alternative and sell it to them. He doesn’t get to just run what he wants because he wants to.

All of that said, out of principle, I would leave any guild that insisted that hammer guardians should not be allowed to GvG. Most of the leading GvG guilds run at least a few hammer guardians. The guardian should not be geared for max damage, but using the hammer in general should be fine.

It is viable if you know what you are doing. It can work if you understand that the primary benefit of healing power on a guardian is selfless daring, which scales 1:1, so you need to be focusing on building your guardian to get as many dodge rolls as possible, whether by perma vigor, stamina sigil, or energy sigil.

Again, it has a niche in WvW, but that’s it.

And even there, i prefer PTV over Cleric anyway.

For PvE, is just out of the equation, period.

Well, what you prefer doesn’t really matter.

The OP asked if it is viable in WvW and Fractals, and at least in WvW, it is viable. I don’t do fractals, so I have no idea what is viable there. I believe PVE is still in that phase where zerker is the only thing that is viable.

Like everyone above is saying, it never gave retal. I have played since beta. Guardians are not lacking for Retal anyway. You can get basically perma retal without even gearing for boon duration.

Recently came back to the game and mentioned that I like to use hammer on my Guardian. Voice com got real quiet, “Don’t you mean mace?” was the reply. “Uhh, no I mean 2 handed hammer. Ya’know, kinda like Gallagher.”

Well that didn’t go over well at all. Apparently attempting to do damage as a Guardian is a cardinal sin if you want to participate in GvG. I was simply instructed to re-roll a warrior if I wanted to smash things.

This will not do gentlemen. This will not do at all. This game attracted me because of Anet’s attempt to stray away from these restrictive role classifications in the first place.

So you tell me, denizens of the forumscape, what has to happen for my hammer to be an acceptable tool for dealing with these conveniently shaped watermelon like invader heads.

I think the content provided between an expansion and living story can be equal

Expansion = content all at once
Living Story = gradual progession of content

In the end we get the same amount of content. I prefer the latter because it keeps people interested in the game and engaged. If we went the expansion route, we would have long periods of no content being released.

And considering that we are following a B2P model rather than subscription, Living Story is much more profitable.

What you say is almost correct. However, the issue is that the living story stuff hasn’t been nearly on the level of expansion content as far as quality goes. Also, most of it has been temporary.

Ruins are fail, leagues will be as well.

Ruins completely changed how WvW works. Leagues aren’t really changing a lot, so I can’t really compare them. Leagues are just another way to determing matchups. Given the abysmal state of the current matchup system, I can’t imagine leagues being too much worse.

Uh, how do you know the whole story of scarlett and know it sucks when you don’t yet know the story.

That is a little unfair.

And its a bit untrue to say no one cares considering there are lots of threads that are full of people that WANT her to have a good motive.

That excuse gets nowhere with me.The game is a year and change old. They have had more than enough time to make the story interesting. The story in SWTOR was more interesting within the first 30 minutes of any class you chose to play than any Living World addition that Anet has added to date. I enjoy the story in most MMOS that I’ve played, including GW1, much much better than what I have gotten in GW2 so far.

By far, GW2 is the worst story experience I have had with an MMO. Fortunately, it is among the best gameplay experiences that I’ve had, which balances out to keep my playing. The call it the living story, but it is more like an undead zombie story to me. It is moving and pretending to be alive, but it is pretty dead.

So again, I think they need to bring in some writing help. Everybody hires consultants for everything these days.

The only problem I have with Scarlet is her motive. She’s been behind so many things, and the only motive we have is “she’s crazy”. That just doesn’t cut it.

We haven’t revealed her motive yet. I can understand the confusion and/or frustration surrounding that so we’re looking at ways to accelerate the plot and implement some features that will make it easier to track Living World content. The first phase of that system will be implemented before the end of the year.

Yes, you haven’t revealed her motives, but the problem is that nobody cares because she is utterly uninteresting. In terms of gameplay, GW2 beats out most MMOS, but most beat it out in terms of story.

Honestly, I would suggest hiring more writers. If the story of Scarlet were a fantasy novel, nobody would buy it and it would be getting 1 star reviews. Hire a professional fantasy writer to help with the GW2 story. R.A. Salvatore has assisted in story writing for many games. At this point, it seems like you guys have no idea where you want the story to go at. It is just kind of floundering around. Get somebody on staff that has a proven record of knowing how to tell an interesting story.

I gotta say that I prefer the expansion model. This constant content is nice, but expansion content is just so much better.

I won’t be quitting Guild Wars entirely for a long while, but I am going to be playing it less and less until some real quality/expansion level content is released.

I still find it odd that the GvG Crowd and General WvW crowd seem to be at war. Given that I participate in both, I feel left out.

The GvG Crowd and the General WvW community should both be targeting the living story instead of each other. There is no GvG and very little WvW development because the living story is where the money is. Some people are spending enough to pay for 2-3 WoW subscriptions every living story update, which is why the living story team keeps getting bigger.

The only way to fix WvW or get GvG is to find a way to make it profitable. The only thing Anet has been able to come up with, apparently, it stimulating mass server transfers. So, if you want to fix it, start suggesting ways to make WvW and/or GvG profitable.

I realize a lot of players still have a bitter taste in their mouth from the last time server transfers were free, but please hear me out.

So as we all know Anet decided to change the amount of leagues in NA from two to three and I am thrilled that they did this as it will stop the t1 servers from destroying everyone below them. However, I also realize this could potentially be a good chance for t1 servers to de-stack themselves and balance out the top six servers . Before when we had our stale match ups, where pretty much each tier was locked with no chance of moving up or down, matches were pretty balanced for each tier and t1 wasn’t as stacked as it is now. However, I believe that ever since the WvW match ups changed and most matches became blow outs, where you either completely destroyed your opponents or they completely destroyed you, many players/guilds became sick of there being no middle ground and moved. I also think that when these players/guilds moved they went to t1 simply because even with the matches having more variation, t1 servers usually fought against another t1 server in most match ups and thus were more stable. So here we are now, around 20 days before season 1 starts and it seems like the t1 servers are even more stacked than they were ever before. So what can we do? Lower the price of server transfers or make them free temporarily for a short time before seasons start. I’ll admit this is more for the servers in the gold league more than anything, but I think this could be good. Right now I think that the price to transfer servers is too high and it is a deterrent for many to transfer down to other servers. If the price of server transfers was temporarily reduced or made free I hope that we could get some people to transfer off of t1 and down to t2, which will hopefully create 6 balanced servers and 7 weeks of great fights and less queues. And of course this would be more incentive for more players to spread out/fill out the servers in the silver and bronze leagues as well. So could this be something to consider? Or do you think that its a bad idea and players would just use it to stack up even more? Is this idea viable?

TLDR;
Is it a good idea for Anet to temporarily make the price of server transfers reduced or free so that the WvW player base spreads out(specifically in gold league) and makes the matches more balanced and fun? Or is it a bad idea because players will still just stack on certain servers?

Why would they implement a plan designed to increase profits by increasing the rate that people transfer servers and then decrease the cost of transferring servers?

He should be fired because he abused his official Arenanet Tag. If he doesn´t like GvG no problem, if he choses to act like a r e kitten as a simple player, ok, the guild here treated him like he deserved it. But by switching on his Arenanet Tag he made it official and he spoke in some way in Arenanets name which was extremely unclever. He wanted to show “Hey i´am an official and you can not tell me anything”. I he had chosen to let his Anet Tag off, he would have spared his employer a lot of drama. And only this is enough imo to correct him accordingly.

I like seeing an Anet rep stating his real opinion rather than the usual canned garbage. I would honest respect Anet less if the guy is punished.

I don’t think you are grouping correctly. There are some GVG haters in this thread. However, there are many like myself that just don’t think someone should be punished/fired/forced to apologize because someone is mad that he didn’t follow their rude order.

I personally have GvGed moderately regularly in the past, albeit I do participate in the other aspects of WvW as well.

However as I stated a few posts back, anet is keeping this thread open – they plan to respond to this. But we need to be fair and give them time to do that. A persons job and livelihood might be at stake here don’t expect anet to make an overnight decision on a weekend about that.

Make an ele. They are relatively fun and able to be good at all aspects of WvW whether defending, attacking, mega zerging, gvg, random skirmishing, solo roaming, group roaming, camp flipping, so on. Eles are solid at all of it.

Avoid ranger and engi unless you plan to roam exclusively. They are fun professions, but not so great the broad WvW sense.

The equivalent would be a gvg team standing in front of any tower or keep you try to attack and not flip it, but just stand there and prevent anyone else from doing it.

Not sure why you’re not getting that this is griefing. He stood right in the middle of the playing field and wouldn’t move. And only after people asked him to move did he pop his tag as a signal of authority — which is an abuse of authority.

His sole purpose was to disrupt something a set of players organized. There was no tower to cap or camp to flip there — the sole purpose was to be disruptive. That’s the definition of griefing.

No rules in WvW say that anyone has to follow your rules or do what you want. If I want to stand in your GvG I can, and all that can be done about it is you killing me. This is why trolls and griefers ultimately are not banned. They are usually fully within the game’s rules.

On my server, when someone trolls our GvGs, we just have them killed and move on. Given that he is a guardian with no escape, it should have been pretty straight forward/easy for you guys to get rid of him. Also, I should note that where he is standing at isn’t a major issue for the GvG. He isn’t nearly in the center where the initial clash would most likely occur..

Honestly, if you rudely demanded that I move instead of asking nicely, I would probably troll you too. I don’t see the big deal here. I would be extremely disappointed if this guy is fired or anything for not breaking any rules.

EDIT: Also your GvG team trying to troll a tower would be wiped by the mega zerg.

But they are meaningful as long as anyone has interest in them, and several people still do.

I dare you to find me one person in the game who cares about PPT. And when I say ‘cares’ I mean, would continue to play for PPT even if all rewards were removed. No champion bags for killing lords, no WxP, no ascended materials, no experience, no karma, no gold. Absolutely no incentive but the PPT. Find me that person, and that person does care about PPT.

Because I’m rather inclined to think that the people upset about GvG are more upset about having their karma trains stolen away.

Plenty of people do. Tons of people sit in keeps for hours and scout. There is absolutely no incentive or benefit to scouting other than keeping the other team from taking stuff. When my server faces a T1 server, we are utterly shocked by how many scouts they have in their stuff. You can’t get anywhere near it without someone seeing you.

It is bad to assume that everyone feels the same way you do. You should speak for yourself not the entire playerbase.

For anyone who calls “taken out of context”, I have a full 45 minute video to give you the entire backdrop of the situation.

So, he doesn’t like GvG. He has a right to that opinion. I don’t see what the big deal is.

I personally don’t have an issue with GvG and have participated in many, but on the Devil’s Advocate side, I can see how GvG doesn’t fall into the spectrum of intended WvW play. Some people may not like objectives and PPT, as as a personal preference I am inclined to agree with them, but that doesn’t change the fact that the ultimate point of WvW is to fight over objectives toward the ultimate purpose of beating the other servers in PPT.

I’d say accept that not even at Anet does everyone agree with you. Stop expecting everyone to agree with you and move on.

EDIT: As far as standing between the GvG goes, he isn’t violating any game rules. The rules of WvW say that I can stand where I want and or attack who I want. When someone stands between GvGs on my server we just have people to kill them. Given that he is a guardian and not a thief or mesmer, it should’ve been pretty straight forward to get rid of him.

The idea of outmanned buff is to give enough incentive for more people to join the war on the losing side. Not to make those who are already on the map stronger – that would be unfair.

Whether these incentives work as well as they thought to be by developers – I don’t know. Only thing I know is buffing any side of the fence combat-wise, be it losing or winning one, is unfair. Orbs kinda blow in this regard.

Even more specifically, the original intent was to make it so that players had some little boost to playing even though you might be getting beaten. The main reason to not make it overly beneficial is that it creates a disincentive to have a full map of players at that point, which is where the balance comes in.

I personally don’t mind bloodlust, guard stacks, or any stat boosts. I like how WvW doesn’t exist in a vacuum like Spvp.

That said, I think some people are getting really frustrated with you because it is kind of hypocritical to put in Bloodlust, which does seem to be causing balance issues, and then outright deny all suggestions to add a stat boost to the outmanned buff based solely on not wanting to implement a stat boost that may cause balance issues.

This is a bad idea because why would anyone defend, it’d be better to leave the castle and take it after some time for better wxp. Maybe it’ll be better for defenders to get better rewards as time passes and they succesfully defend.

Also i don’t think punishing the wining server is a good idea. If you kill someone couple of times they give little wxp, why would you nerf it even more?

This wouldn’t change anything. As it stands, there already isn’t a real reason to defend keeps. My post wasn’t meant to address rewarding defenders. If it was I would’ve posted it in the thread about that.

Not everyone likes it/chooses to run it, but AH is a solid choice. Running damage gear with AH usually works out pretty well in PVE.

As you will notice from the responses, some people don’t run AH so that they can gloat about not running it. However, it really is powerful in all environments of the game.

You can significantly reduce a burst if you stagger the passive block and the active block. The next time a thief tries to burst you, pop your active block directly after the passive one triggers.

Also, virtues are tied to AH due to traitable buffs. So decreasing the cooldown would increase the healing from AH.

This is probably one of my major issues with GW2. Basically, you are being dragged through the story and have absolutely no impact on how it plays out.
