I use action camera and it is kitten amazing. You are actually more responsive because you do not have to hold down a button to rotate, meaning it is one less thing to worry about.

Also the targeting is so good and it makes auto attacks even easier.

Backstab

With the balance patch fast approaching tomorrow, I want to address the issue with backstab.

Backstab:
requires,
1. stealth
2. hitting behind or side for maximum damage
3. not being revealed
4. only once every 3 seconds max
806(2.4) damage

Vault.
5 initiative
879(2.25)

Backstab needs a major buff. I think vault is fine as it is, maybe should cost 6 initiative but vault should not be nerfed to be on backstab or slightly less level, backstab should be buffed to be slightly ahead.

Thief was meant to be a shadow class, get in, get out high damage.
Lets bring that back with a starting change by having backstab hit a lot harder.

Sword offhand

Currently, shield far outweighs the sword offhand. Crystal hibernation is strong and Envoy of exuberance is alright.

To improve sword offhand, Delist’s preparation should be extended to 2.5 seconds, and shacking wave should cost 5 energy and perhaps daze the target.

Grasping shadow needs a major buff. It has potential but the aim of this skill is to be a “pick target skill”
make it a 600 range shadowstep.

Shadow step to your foe and stab them, connecting them to you. Shadowstep backward and pull them towards you. Removes 2 conditions.

Damage: 275 (1.23)?
Pull: 600
Initial Shadowstep range : 600
Shadowstep Range: 600

This makes it a much more viable pick target skill and allows it to be used to get in and out in a flash. It is also an extremely strong cc to add to the set. The condition removal is especially vital as revenant lacks condition removal, especially on zerker (like shiro legend or devestation trait line).

staff problems and suggestions

Dude if you are having trouble on staff you are doing it wrong. I can beat most classes using it, it is really solid in pvp.

I am sorry but I disagree with the skill 4 having a smoke field. This is not a stealth weaponset, it is an evade weaponset. Read my changes to see how staff should be done.

1. Remove the evade from skill 3 and add it to Weakening charge. Weakening charge having the evade instead would make a lot more sense, especially since it is quite a slow skill.
2. Speed up the animation of Weakening charge and decrease its aftercast
3. Thieves do not have access to stuns apart from pistol whip. A staff seems like the perfect place to give us this. Remove staff 3 and exchange it with a charge stun of 600 range.
“Charge forward with your staff and deliver a crushing blow to sun your foe”
This gives us a chance to land vaults and weakening charge.
4. I actually really like skill 4, it fires fast, does decent damage and blinds. I have seen some suggestions for a smoke field but for once I disagree with this as this weaponset does not need stealth, and it would just detract from its main use.
I saw a suggestion for a “Smoke cloud” which seems like a great idea.
“Create a cloud of smoke for the caster to hide within, evading and becoming immune to incoming conditions”.
Duration: 1.5s
Radius. Radius: 240
This allows us to deal with conditions and gives us a decent way to mitigate damage with the blind.

Thief is dead. Do not bother. Many of us are considering walking away soon. When I say dead, we are useless/outclassed in pretty much everyway.

our only thing going for us in pvp atm is +1 and mobility/decap.

Just pick something else like revenant, or necromancer(for reaper) or anything else

Auto attack is fine as is, I think it is great. That third attack with the rift is really cool.

Precision strike is a bit lackluster at the moment. The chill is just not long enough so either increase the chill to 5 seconds. The range on this strike is nice, but it would be better if it was a full circle whirl that sent blades out in every direction.

Unrelenting Assault. Move along this is my favorite skill in the entire game. very unique, very well executed, and very useful with the evade and the might.

Offhand. This is where most people would say that sword is lackluster, as offhand shield and axe are far superior.

Duelists Preparation. I honestly do not know what to do with this. it is a solid block but it is the skill that comes next that is lackstar. The imobolize is inconsistent. I feel like the block is needed to make the set allow for some defensive play, but I cannot suggest how to fix the channel skill.

Grapsing shadow. I love the idea of this but currently very hard to execute. Would be nice if it was instead a 600 range skill that shadowstepped you to the foe, then stab your foe, shadow step backwards and pull them. This would truely make it a “pick target skill” as you are in and out in a second.

New F3 skill

I’ve long thought we should have some kind of Shadowstep core mechanic. Something akin to Infiltrator’s Arrow as a F3 (or it as the F1 and Steal as F2+F3) would make a lot of sense.

Since acrobatics was basically ripped to shreds to create our so called “elite specialization,” along with feline grace (feline grace was better than 3 dodges), why is our "core mechanic which is the new dodges of the elite specialization locked into the kitten grandmaster traits. Come on. Imagine if scrapper could only access certain gyros by choosing it in the grandmaster traits. It is ridiculous.

Make it so our new dodge bar acts like a skill and we choose the dodge there. Like a utility, and then replace the grandmaster traits with good things.

Shortbow as f3

So another F3/F4 idea has come to mind.

Thieves essentially have no weapon swap as you will never(or rarely) see a thief without shortbow. The mobility is just too valuable and essential.

If thieves were to have access to shortbow through f3 which would replace the weaponskills with shortbow, and would o on a 15 second cooldown when switching back would make a lot of sense.

This would open up a lot of versatility to thief builds as we could take D/P and S/D without losing a lot of mobility.

The idea of replacing external reveal with “spotted” which allows the shadow arts line to function is better than your idea.

Revealed. The changes to be made

Straight to the point

Revealed is annoying, but it is fair that we place it on ourselves when we attack from stealth (to a degree)

Now, we all know that all the hard counters that have made its surface have made several builds un-viable, negate an entire traitline and just plain ignorantly added.

The fixes:

1. Change any external application (that is an application not caused by a stealthed thief doing damage) to a new mechanic called spotted. This mechanic functions like revealed in that you can see the thief, but they can still stealth so their core mechanic (stealth attack) and stealth traits are not negated. Also make it so that they look transparent instead of fully revealed, since that adds some counterplay

2. This next change is courtesy of “theanders.5681”

As it stands revealed training is very sub par. This next change will make revealing/spotting a thief dangerous, and will make you decide if it is worth it.

“revealed training.”
For every second you are revealed/spotted, gain a stacking 4% damage buff that is removed whenever you stealth

Since you’re rewarded for revealing yourself or being revealed

And it promotes staying out of stealth for longer or not stealthing as much during combat, it promotes counterplay but also adresses the endless stealth issue.

3. Add a passive trait that deals with revealed/spotted.

The new minor grandmaster in shadow arts line.

The next changes, remove the acrobatics line and replace it with a line titled “assassin arts”
This line will focus on shadow steps and blocking, which will allow thieves a bit more chance of survival without relying on stealth and dodging. The reason this line is going to be so different is that when you dodge you are not dealing damage. When you are in stealth you are not dealing damage. This line is going to promote active play to get the benefits. A few traits will require you to be attacking. This makes it an offensive and defensive line at the same time, with the core focus being defensive properties.

Minor adept
“Critical strikes”
25% chance to block attacks while attacking

Major adepts
Assassin’s Remedy – Remove a condition when you shadowstep

Not balanced if not icd. At least 5s.

Determination – Gain protection and aegis after you shadowstep(ICD 5 seconds)

ICD at least 15s, more like 30.

Minor master
“Death’s Charge”
Gain health whenever you shadowstep

ICD depending on the amount of health at least 10s.

Minor grandmaster
Way of the fox – your bass movement speed is increased by 33%

33%? thats like perma swiftness… 15% is ok imo.

Major Grandmasters
Flashing blades – whenever you block an attack, your attacker takes damage.

Yeah, we’ve got so many blocks. Even with your 25% blockchance while attaing this trait is crap.

Periodically block attacks (this is similar to one of the old traits anet made with “periodically evade attacks”)

Also crap, we Need controlled blocking of attacks and not random blocks.

Deadly paradox – You attack 33% faster. Your thief utilities activate and recharge 33% faster.

This is your instant winning button?! Check out Revenant’s legend Shiro increased attack Speed and at which costs it Comes. And you wanna give an additional reduced cooldown of utilities? Lol… Rather go for 33% increased attack Speed + 33% increased cooldown of utilites, heal & elite.

Yeah I forgot some of the ICD and some were broken. Someone else suggested the deadly paradox change so I fixed that to. I agree with everything you stated except

Earlier I saw a post about a new trait line called mobility arts and I thought it was a fantastic idea. I wanted to expand on it. This post will

Address the DD and acrobatics overlap
Focus on shadowstepping and blocking for the new line by utilizing focus on the gw1 assassin as well

First, the main thing is that DD was created from a nerfed acrobatics, which was nerfed to create DD. To bring build diversity, acrobatics needs to be removed entirely, with slight buffs given to DD, making DD the dodge line.

Changes:
Currently, the entire acrobatics line is very very bad. The only traits I find useful are Feline Grace, fleet shadow and vigorous recovery. The rest are shocking, with the grandmasters absolutely terrible and Don’t stop redundant due to the new “dash dodge”

We will add in fleet shadow to the “hidden thief” trait so
Stealing grants stealth. Move 50% faster while in stealth

Add feline grace to “driven fortitude”, so now you gain health and vigor when you successfully evade an attack.

Not sure where to add vigorous recovery to.

Shroud of Distress – whenever your health drops below the health threshold, gain protection, stability, aegis and regeneration. Health threshold 50%. (ICD 60 seconds)
Aura of displacement – Whenever you shadow step to a foe or block a foe, you steal life.
Augury of Death – whenever you shadow step to a foe, mark them with a shadow mark. Foes with a shadow mark move 5% slower per mark, maximum 3 marks. Marks expire after 5 seconds.

Minor grandmaster

New F3 skill

So thieves are in a terrible place, absolute trash right now. I have a long post up coming but for now, me and a mate have an idea for a new F3 skill for thieves that will be the start of some major needed buffs, and give thieves something unique.

Hidden Dagger:
1/4 second cast
40 second cooldown

Strike your foe with a lethal blade, instantly killing them. This skill bypasses downed state.
Health threshold >20%

Basically, the skill is unusable until target is at or below 20% health, but once they hit that threshold, the skill becomes available.

any strike of the foe below 20% or in downed state instantly kills them. This will be a very valuable skill for pvp especially, as well as useful in pve (would need adjustments).

Possible hidden blade idea?

The idea is actually not a utility but an F3 skill to add to the thieves current ability.

What it does is it gives thieves something unique that adds a lot of viability of a thief to both SPVP and WvW.

The point is it is meant to be a quick impacting strike that bypasses downed state (or if they are in downed state then kills them), giving thief something unique and powerful.

Theanders has basically outlined how it would work but we feel with how much the thief has been nerfed that this would add something really unique to the thief

Nothing really counters thief as hard as a thief counters mesmer. I think revenant (shiro) has the possibility to be the anti-thief spec. Sword/sword or sword/axe has some pretty good potential along with the shiro utilities.

Have you actually been playing mesmer lately??

Since the update mesmers are crushing a lot of thieves due to the insane mesmer buffs and thief nerfs

Stealth Attacks

Terrible idea, and it always will be.

Second: “I think that all our skills should either be situational (not too situational kitten that their rarely used such as head shot)”
How casual are you?? Headshot is a very powerful skill that I and many good thieves use at very crucial moments.
Shadow Shot- Doesn’t really need to be changed much considering it requires some situational awareness and is certainly not a skill that you would spam (all the time). However, imo not enough considering its ease of landing it compared to other 3 skills and how hard hitting it is. But maybe make it so that the blind component only applies if the target is facing you, and a 1 second cripple when striking the foe from behind. That way, it can either be used defensively while in combat or as a chasing tool.

It is already a gap closer and works fine, I like my blinds thanks

“Ankle Shot- Fire a shot to the ankles, crippling your foe for 3 seconds. Immobilise your foe for 1 ½ seconds if target is crippled. (cost 4 initiative) .”
Once again stupid. the imobolize is there fore good reason. And who the kitten runs caltrops??

HOWEVER!! I must admit reading it all, there are some fantastic suggestions here and I love some of them

But you also missed reverting embrace back to removing all conditions.

Lack of Condition Removal

I am super excited for revenant since Shiro and Sword Sword was released.

However, I noticed that there is a lack of condition removal, apart from mallyx’s control of conditions, which means traiting into 2 other legends makes our condition removal poor.

So, we have healing stone from Dwarf stance

Purifying Essence from Centaur stance

Riposting Shadows which only removes debilitating conditions

Renewing Wave From staff

So, here comes the main problem, which is the lack of removal through traits. Only Mallyx can deal with conditions properly

Devastation has no condition removal, which is mostly fine because it is a DPS line and the traits are sick

Mallyx has resistance and control

Salvation:
Eluding Nullification Dodge rolling removes a condition from nearby allies.

Retribution: None

Invocation:
Cleansing Channel Invoking a legend removes a condition.

What I would like to see here are suggestions form others on where we could add condition removal.

Impossible Odds is a good starting point because the original one transferred conditions so it would be beneficial if this skill also transferred conditions per hit, with maybe an interval of 1 second.

Enchanted Daggers:
I do like this skill, but I have a feeling it just might not provide enough sustain. I could be wrong, especially with our second heal skill.
It would be cool if while channeling, with an interval of 3 seconds, it removed conditions with every 3rd strike or something. It has 6 strikes, so on strike 1,4 and maybe 6, it removes a condition

I just want to say thank you very kittening much for SHIRO!!

I played the first game for many years and absolutely adored it, with assassin and warrior my mains.
Later in the game, I solely played assassin and in Gw2, I almost solely play thief !!

Now I can have a version of my loved assassin back in the form of Shiro !!
Also, Impossible Odds was a skill I was agonizingly hoping would make it into the game !! Ya have no idea how glad I am that it is on Shiro’s Legend !

Shiro was a quick and deadly assassin and the new sword set delivers on this theme. In today’s blog post, ArenaNet revealed three of the new sword skills.
Rift Slash — Slash foes, creating a rift on them that explodes for additional damage after a short delay.

This third skill on the auto-attack change will slash at foes in front of your character. Any foe hit will have an unstable mist rift sliced into them that will explode after a short delay and damage nearby foes.

Precision Strike — Strike nearby foes with precision, sending out blades that damage and chill them.

Another quick attack that is good for damaging your foe or just to keep them chilled and within reach of your blades.

Unrelenting Assault — Unleash a fierce attack on nearby foes, shadowstepping to foes in the vicinity and delivering strikes. Gain might each time you strike a foe.

On the legend side, ArenaNet revealed three of the Shiro specific skills. First up is the heal Enchanted Daggers:

Enchanted Daggers — Enchanted daggers will strike your target as you attack, siphoning life from the damaged foe.

Designed to mimic Shiro’s aggressiveness, this heal skill will have you summon jade daggers that float above your character that attack any enemy you strike, siphoning life from that foe.

Phase Traversal — Step through the Mists to your target, and make your next few attacks unblockable.
Jade Winds — Call upon the Jade Wind to turn nearby enemies into jade, stunning them for a short duration.

Not only will you be able to cast Jade Wind, but a trait will trigger this skill when the player is downed. This way players can truly feel like Shiro as they too release the Jade Wind when defeated.

Likely a AoE jade stun.

Riposting Shadow- shadowstep to enemy and damage them, and shadowstep to the next enemy that hit you, and damage them. If the hit lands, this is renewed.

Some kind of parry move that blocks and damage.

His heal damages nearby enemies. And self revives if taking a critical hit while used under 10% health.

Some kind of floating sword spins around him and damage enemies when they attack you while providing damage reduction.

A AoE Super spin Melee attack.

Soul Drain

Weapon Enchantment- your weapons change and become powered by dark energy. Each attack steals life. Upkeep skill.

Transform into Envoy soul shepherds for a certain duration gaining new powerful skills.

Summon Shiro’ken as a minion to attack enemies.

Soul Banishment – turn the target enemy into a Shrio’ken that will attack its own allies. Upkeep skill.

Meditation of the Reaper- heals a small amount, and absorbs all damage taken for 4 seconds, and heal that at the end while also damaging nearby enemies. (Heal skill)

Something like that would pretty much be used to justify having weak baseline damage on weapons, which practically makes any non-Shiro build Obsolete, because your weapons will be super weak without having Shiro Elite…

that would be very poor game design if that was the case.

I do not believe that, its only double striking and the Shiro Channel is meant to be Power DPS based.

Also, it will not be 100% uptime, it may only be active a few seconds

If we take a look at Jalis and mallyx, we can see they both channel a stance with an energy upkeep, so it is not terrible to assume that Shiro’s Elite could be something like

Impossible odds
Summon the power of Shiro through the mists and channel it through yourself. All you attacks are double strikes and AOE , steal boons and transfer conditions.

If your a gw1 fan you knew that this skill was iconic and it would be amazing and fit perfectly for the DPS role of revenant

Right, I think I speak on behalf of the majority of the Thief community.

I have played thief since the beginning, and it is basically the only class I play as I only WvW and PvP, almost 0 PvE.

I have played a variety of builds. My favourite was P/D condition for WvW as I could solo up to 3v1, 2v1 if the players were really good. I did not win every battle but it was fun, a challenge and I enjoyed. I never enjoyed D/P as I prefered S/D over it, so I also played S/D in WvW

I played solely S/D in PvP.

The Main Issues I have is, in no particular order bar the first is…

1. Someone who has vast knowledge or mains thief needs to take responsibility for their balancing, as the person who currently works on them says he does not care about thief and touches it very rarely. He even forgot some of thieves traits when working on the latest patch. To me this is disgusting and shows that he is just a member of anet listening to cries from people who do not play thief

2. Revert both Feline Grace and Shadow’s Embrace. THESE 2 NERFS WERE UNJUSTIFIED AND ABSOLUTELY CRIPPLING ON THIEVES SURVIVAL. There was no justification for either of these, and they both destroyed a ton of builds all at once. goodbye to our sustain.

3. Look at putting Cloaked in Shadows back into the second spot, as this would bring back the variety for P/D and D/D builds. As it stands, D/D cannot function because they cannot blind and their sustain from Shadows Embrace is gone, or Infusion of they used that. The middle bunch of Shadow Arts traits are boring as it stands, and cloaked replacing shadow’s protector would be better because, with shadow’s rejuvenation you do not really need rejuvenation boon.

4. Our vitality needs a slight buff in my opinion, but not insanely.

Has anyone here telling others to change from 100% stealth considered that maybe that is why we chose this particular class? mind = blown.

Absolutely agree. I chose thief to roam and I love stealth. Looking at the other classes, their condi clears are now way stronger. We now need to spec into 2 lines AND give up Hide in Shadows to have reliable access to removing imobolize and other non-damaging conditions

and even then it is not as reliable as before.

Look Arenanet, you had no reason to make shadow’s embrace as crap as it is now. Right now, all it takes is an immobilize or a blind and we have no way to remove apart from shadowstep if we run P/D or D/D.

Unless we use withdraw and the new trait, but I like Hide in Shadows.

Upon dodging, this skill now becomes interrupted when it used to channel through dodging. Nothing in patch notes so assuming it is a bug

it does not proc twice in the 4s and you stopped it being able to remove all conditions??

Revert it please or I may consider being done since with this game Lock on, Cloaked in shadows, Feline grace and now SE.

it is probably going to be named “Sniper” due to OP’s post in reason #2. This “Sniper” is going to most likely be power-based since it fits the theme of the .

I agree that rifle is a plausible choice. However, for the name, I’ll put my money on “marksman”, which is a little bit more lore friendly. Who wants to bet? I’m on EU.

edit: “sharpshooter” is possible, but less cool.

you have to remember that we are not just getting a weapon and “marksman or sharpshooter” are not very fantasy related
