Balthazar, Bringer of War, Finder of Wisdom, He That Shows Us the Final Truth Judge of the Powerful, Revealer of Strength, and Scourge of the Prideful.

Balthazar came in fire and wrath, carrying the head of his father and leading his fierce hounds, Temar and Tegon."

I have this wild theory, just wanted to hear what you all thought of it;
Balthazar wasn’t always a god: he murdered his father to claim his divinity for himself. Because of the line of succession, that role should have went to Menzies (or they should have had half of it each), which would be why there is so much conflict between the two.
We know gods are not born gods, like it was the case for Kormir, and that others might be born of a relationship between gods and humans (Grenth born of Dwayna and an unknown sculptor who’s heavily speculated to be Malchor).
So, knowing Balthazar’s untrustworthiness, the other gods joined together to bring down Balthazar and put Menzies in his place, because he is the one who should have been there from the get go.
Then there’s the Mirror of Lyssa that comes in, but we have no way to know if it was willingly given by her, or if he stole it.

GW1 Player Character Vs. GW2 Player Character

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Djahlat.9610

Not so sure about player characters in general, but there’s little doubt the GW1 Mesmer was far more powerful than it is in GW2. Backfire + Visions of Regret would kill another caster after two spells. You’d need a ridiculous number of confusion stacks to approach the same effect in GW2.

And then there’s Diversion (next skill disabled for over a minute), Empathy (a bit like Retaliation but 10x as powerful), and the list goes on.

Those are game mechanics. I’m pretty sure GW2 mesmers are more capable of illusions than GW1 mesmers. It was said that casting an illusion as large as the Eye of the North (building) made Koro Sagewind, a very powerful mesmer in her time, go blind for a week, and in GW2 you have Queen Jennah making an entire Kralkatorrik illusion while simultaneously petrifying and making everyone look like Branded to save them without a scoff (at least without any side-effect we know of)

Balthazar is not just weakened, he is no longer a god.

If it was just about dragons sucking the gods magic, you would see all 6 in Tyria sniffing bloodstone dust, not just Balthazar.

We don’t know that he’s no longer a god. In fact, I’d be enclined to say that he still is a god (or kept his divinity) because we know Divine Magic is immune to Dragon Corruption, and the fact that he didn’t explode when he absorbed Jormag’s and Primordus’ energies shows he must have purified them with his divinity.
For all we know, it might have been the alliance of Dhuum and Menzies that weakened him (he says “they” dimmed his light)

she’s not very good at actually dealing damage.

Except for the time she one-shots three Mantle in a row?

I don’t think it’s that she’s worse at doing damage than defending, I think it’s that she prefers defending to attacking, as a matter of political necessity. That difference in experience might mean her plot-altering powers are all defensive, but if nothing else, she’s at least on par with the PC where offensive magic is concerned.

except mesmers are the worst class at dealing dmage in this game, let alone one shot people like it doesn’t matter.
I would certainly enjoy Jennah’s power as a mesmer for once, instead of just sharing boons to every other better damage dealers I walk with.

Once again, in-game mechanics and lore capabilities have nothing to do with each other, stop trying to make them the same

In lore, the gods gave magic in small amounts humans. There used to be giant races, but it was said the gods took away their powers because they had too much magic. With Queen Jenna showing how much power she has, it looks like it exceeds even what Balthazar was capable of.

A level 80 Elemantalist has a max range of 1500 for spells. Queen Jenna cast a barrier that covered a whole city. If that is the case, then the elder dragons would be targetting her as a huge walking battery. But because she’s a god, she can probably conceal her magical energy from the dragons.

You’re mixing so many things I don’t even know where to start;
a) you seem to be talking about the Giganticus Lupicus, and there’s no indication the gods meddled with their magic except through the bloodstones that seeped out less magic than the overwhelming excess of magic Abaddon granted to humans because it caused way too much damage.
b) Jennah already proved how incredibly powerful she has in Edge of Destiny when she created a huge illusion to replicate Kralkatorrik, which made all his minions go away, while simultaneously maintaining a spell on a few hundred charrs and humans that petrified them and made them seem like branded so the Kralkatorrik minions wouldn’t attack them.
c) in-game mechanics have nothing to do with lore. Elementalists have same range/animations/particle effects from level1, your point makes no sense.

It used to be a sea; the Crysta Sea, but turned to a desert after a fight between Gods (iirc the fight between Abaddon and the 5 others). As such, there are boat remains hanging around in the middle of nowhere. There are giant skulls that are heavily believed to have belonged to the Giganticus Lupicus.
It was also the final destination of the pilgrimage of some Elonians led by Turai Ossa, who wanted to achieve Ascension in the Crystal Desert where it was believed the gods used to walk amongst men.
Back in GW1 the area was filled with devourers, hydras, gryphons, centaurs, Forgotten, and Ghosts (of those who died during their pilgrimage).
I don’t specifically remember any place being filled with gold.
However, if we do go there, I expect to encounter the ghost of Turai Ossa, since he found eternal living death while looking for eternal life. He helped GW1 PC achieve what he couldn’t, so it’s more than likely he would make a reappearance.

I like the idea, but as long as they stay only “pretty” and don’t have a stat advantage for 2 reasons :
1) if you equip a legendary pet with higher stats, and that makes it so you can’t switch between pets, then it conflicts with base ranger traits that trigger effects on petswap.
2) they will make the other non legendary pets obsolete faster than the HoT pets did. After all, it’s more than easy to go hours without swapping your regular pet if you don’t need to, so a legendary one would be unfair competition

Omg thanks that’s what I was trying to say in my previous answer but didn’t really know how to phrase it.

Concerning plant magic, aren’t all Sylvari capable of it? I remember an interview (with Ree Soesbee I believe) where they would explain racial skills, and Sylvari’s efficiency at plant-shaping magic, especially to build their habitats and clothes and whatnot. They’re a recent race, but still more ancient to Tyria than the Druids (the elite spec, not the extinct civilization)

Absolutely not, there’s Killeen in the the book Ghosts of Ascalon that was quite a competent Necromancer along with Trahearne.
I think that only Draconic energies can cancel each other out, otherwise it would be known that Necromancer would be at a disadvantage when fighting Rangers, it wouldn’t be a recent discovery. Dragon magic properties can’t be applied to the magic other creatures use
Sylvari have a more objective view of death that makes it more socially acceptable to meddle with death magic. See Undertaker Diarmad in Divinity’s Reach has interesting dialogue concerning this. ( https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Undertaker_Diarmad )

The suggestion to allow all types of professions to have access to all 3 armor weights has been made multiple time, and I believe the technical reason why it’s hard (or not viable) is that different armor pieces of different weights have different “cutting” parameters. Like for example Light armor tops end lower than medium or heavy ones, and the clipping with pants would be horrible.
That’s what we’ve been told to the best of my recollection.
It’s stupid, it’s not like armor pieces don’t clip within their respective armor weights anyways, and we have a preview function implemented, so if Clipping happens, the players only have themselves to blame for it.

Just to better understand your view: do you also view primordial fire as an indipendent thing or do you intend that it must be associated to Primordus, inherently and necessarily coming from it?

Ha, thanks, I was actually surprised that I was the first to bring it up, the similarity was so striking to me.
Well it’s really not explained what Primordial Fire is except that the Destroyer of Life was made of it (“primordial fire burned primordial fire”) , so to answer your question : I don’t know , but I wouldn’t be surprised if the scroll that Braham retrieved allowed him to recreate or emulate this primordial fire (in the same manner the PC was able to emulate Divine Fire)

aside from agreeing that it’s cute, i must object to your theory of a pattern. Bifrost and Nevermore are both serious looking, and so are Astralaria and Frostfang

I am curious to know if you’re serious, or just joking about. Bifrost is in no way serious. It’s been renamed by MANY as the “rainbow d*ldo”

and tho frostfang can be taken a little more serious than others its still a gag gift type of weapon. But if thats the only two you choose to compare from then, you must see some kind of pattern there. If its not anets intentions on making it that way, they’ve done a bad job on trying to prove otherwise. Whether thats the case or not, the fact of the matter is, the legendarys that are out right now are, in fact, silly or serious and if it has a HoT alternative it is the opposite as far as being serious or silly. But i suppose we’ll just have to see, but let me say if the new ledgendary dagger comes out and its a quaggin squirting water out of its bum at lightspeed, i believe i’ll have proven my point.

Well, Bifrost is the rainbow bridge opened by Heimdal in norse mythology there’s no silly about it..

I really have difficulty seeing how people could think that rainbow = humoristic. It fits a certain aesthetic, maybe not yours, but for some people it fits.

I didn’t notice this before on my previous quote of yours, but your quote seems to be saying that they might not have sexual reproduction but might instead have “behavioral genders.” What would behavioral genders be for genderless(?) asexual(?) dragons? How would members of a group of genderless/asexual dragons behave in a masculine or feminine manner?

For example, most dragons behave masculine, so we refer to them as he and him even though we never have a concersation with them.
Primordus and Jormag we know dont reproduce at all. They mold bodies from elemental force and energies. I know destroyers like to copy local creatures.

Ok. I got to ask.

How does a dragon behave masculine if they don’t have sexual reproduction per your above quote, " don’t think that if Gleam was male, it would prove sexual reproduction. For all we know dragons only have behavorial genders."

In the absence of sex, what is masculine or a behavioral gender?

hard to explain, its just kinda when you see an androgynous person, but they act all bulky, tough and alpha, you assume they’re male. you could be wrong, but its the hunch of gender/behavior coupling

Ah. Ok. If someone is fit, tough and alpha, don’t assume they’re female.

Of course that wouldn’t work for species where the female is dominant over males, such as hyenas and raptors.

Behavioral gender doesn’t work unless you’re assuming gender and behavior is linked.
It’s sort of a nonsense thing to say if a species doesn’t have gender. You’re then saying that the more aggressive ones are one gender and the less aggressive ones are the other gender when it’s all one group of neuters with varying temperaments.

I know what he meant, and he gave an example that easily is countered by sexual dysmorphia.
From what I understood, Dragons are assigned a gender because of their behaviour being closer to the stereotypical male side of the gender spectrum (confrontational, assertive, careless, etc.) whereas Glint was presented as a “she” because of her motherly, caregiving nature (also her telepathic Voice-over uses a woman’s voice, and she lays eggs).
We know the Elder Dragons don’t abide by the standard human gender and sexual identity norms, but the way they are presented simply assumes their gender because it makes them more personable, which is what i believe ANet was trying to achieve (make them go from invincible forces of nature to powerful creatures with weaknesses that can be fought)

Only to be topped off by your recommendations which are not backed up at all and are in complete contradiction with what the game is about.

  • many people, myself included, enjoy leveling their character to maximum level and having a feeling of progression.
  • what are you doing with people who got legendary weapons for the convenience of stat swapping?
  • RNG Black Lion Chests are a healthy way of ensuring income through keys without requiring anyone to buy them. They’re also another way for people to trade their gems to gold (gems>keys>tickets>skins>gold) that may be more advantageous sometimes, and also helps stabilizing Gem to Gold conversion rates.
  • The game has never been about grinding, there’s /nothing/ requiring people to grind for BiS

overall I’d give your post a 1/10 for good spelling and structure.

Invisible Weapon Skins

I have been thinking that it would be kind of nice to have Invisible Weapon Skins. I use a lot of magic based characters in this game and think that hand magic would look great.

Any thoughts?

If you use magic in this game, you should know that weapons are critical in using certain magics. I’m not against ANet offering a premium “Emperor’s Weapon Set” of invisible skins; I don’t think it would fit the lore that well.

I’m so happy I understood the naked emperor reference I feel like a totally literate individual lmao.
Honestly I’d rather have ANet make new Especs with hand combat/magic because there are things that would look very odd. For instance, the idle Staff animation would look very funky with an invisible staff. Or the draw/sheathe Animations for sword/scepter, etc.

Make Hunter's Shot Unblockable

in Ranger

Posted by: Djahlat.9610

Djahlat.9610

Hey, couldn’t find another thread on this, and I didn’t want to add it to the QoL list because what I’m talking about is closer to being a buff than a QoL change, so here goes:
Remember when Mesmers’ Scepter autoattack chain would create a clone for you if you managed to reflect it? It was pretty broken if you happened to be using Tornado on an Ele, then the mesmer would be stuck fighting 2 tornadoes because of his own attacks. ANet acknowledged this was an issue and addressed it. Now, the part of their autoattack chain is no longer a projectile, so this can’t happen.
I’m asking for ANet to make Hunter’s Shot Unlockable because right now, if you happen to strike an enemy that is using a reflect effect, they will become invisible for 3 seconds instead of you.
Why is this a problem? Because Hunter’s Shot is the only defensive skill we have on longbow, and that right now there is too much projectile-hate going on, and granting your enemy invisibility when you desperately needed it is often synonymous to your death.
I realized that was particularly problematic when I dropped the Druid elite spec in WvW and was left with very little ways disengage (no Ancestral Grace on staff, no Celestial Shadow)

What do you guys think?

The base healing on Celestial Avatar is more than enough to get you alive in all PvE situations. If it’s not to heal, people pick Druid spec for Shorter Staff CD or Condi Clear, Stealth+Superspeed or Perma Swiftness or Lower Glyphs CD, and Ancestral Grace or Rooting.
For group content it’s always useful to take Druid with Glyph of Empowerment (+10% dps for whole group for a while), Grace of the Land for another +15% damage every so often, and Frost Spirit and Spotter. That can really boost up the damage of your whole group
