PoF predictions...

I can see Braham in his ‘Grr, I hate Dragons’ state coming down to the Crystal Desert angry at the commander for being involved in putting Jormag to sleep and joining Balthazar on his war to kill Kralkatorrik.

Then we have a whole plot point and drama as the Commander dealing with an old friend joining the enemy.

The above obviously relies on Balthazar willingly accepting Braham rather than just outright killing him, which seems against his nature so they may genuinely leave him for whatever expansion deals with Jormag, but I just have a feeling that they’ve built him up far too much in Season 3 to leave him out of the expansion entirely.

So is Balthazar not a god right now?

This also brings into question Rytlock, who went to the Mists, came back (supposedly) blind and is extremely cagey about the whole event. The trailer also reveals he may at least finally tell us what the hell happened to him there. Wanna place bets he saw some Gods?

In one of his videos, WP showed that Rytlock removes his blindfold and had some dialog explaining that He only wore it to help himself concentrate while dealing with the voices in his head. Now that he has better control, he didnt need it anymore.

Well that’s a little disappointing if I’m honest. Ah well – t’is what it is.

This was a problem with HoT and elite specs/revenant in general.

On the plus side, they seem to be committed to actually giving NPCs our elite specs in PoF – Wooden Potatoes talks with an NPC who is a Mirage and explains ‘Mirage magic’. If you ARE that elite spec, I speculate it’ll give you different flavour text.

The hope is, we’ll see a Revenant NPC using Renegade and there’ll be some more solid in-game lore surrounding Revs in general. They seem to have listened to feedback about the disappointing lack of profession lore in HoT, so here’s hoping.

[SPOILERS] "There is no Honor in War"

in Lore

JayMack.8295

I also don’t think he’s talking about the Dragons.

The Six have willingly avoided getting involved in the battle against the Elder Dragons until now – why would he suddenly care about it? Surely if they were absorbing his power slowly and weakening him, he and the other Gods would have acted much sooner rather than waited until the moment they were weak.

His entire purpose for appearing on Tyria thus far (to our knowledge) has been to absorb magic. He got a chunk of it from the Bloodstone (which evidently wasn’t enough) and now a load from Primordus.

As soon as he he had enough, he left Primordus and our player characters to deal with those who ‘dimmed his light’. If he wanted The Dragons, he could have appeared physically right there and then and killed Primordus. Unless he also knows that killing Primordus will potentially doom Tyria, of course, but then he didn’t seem too fussed about Tyria….

I agree that he’s been betrayed somehow. His ‘There is no honor in war’ line is too deliberate to ignore as the God of War.

One question I do find myself asking, though, is why did he help us protect Aurene? I can’t work out what was in it for him.

(SPOILERS!!) Fire and Ice?

Speaking of the cycle of awakening, I’m wondering if the ‘spectrum’ of magic has anything to do with it.

Is Primordus always the first to rise (if he always is) because his ‘spectrum’ of magic is the easiest to absorb, or is it more potent than other forms of magic so he requires less of it to wake up? I suppose it could also be because of their size.

Mordremoth is interesting because he got given breakfast in bed by Scarlet which would have accelerated his awakening, but I’ve always been interested in why they wake up when they do. It could just be as simple as certain Elder Dragons wanting more magic before they wake up than others like some humans needing 6 hours sleep whilst others need 10, but especially now we know it’s a spectrum (at least according to Taimi) I wonder now how it influences their awakening.

In addition, I may have missed this while playing episode 2 but if what Taimi says is true, why are they only interested in other ED’s domains after they die? Why not compete for their domains constantly? I assume it’s because certain EDs are just naturally better at absorbing certain domains than others and with that Elder Dragon dead, the others can actually absorb it without too much resistance.

You have to clear all the events, too. If you skipped from Vale Guardian to Gorseval without doing the events in-between (the ghost wall, and circles event) you won’t have a cleared instance.

If you did all of that, then you should have a cleared instance.

[BUG] Dialogue out-of-sync HoT cutscenes

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

JayMack.8295

This may just be me, but it seems that during ALL Heart of Thorns cut-scenes (haven’t experienced this in season 3), the dialogue goes progressively more and more out of sync the longer it goes on.

A big example of this is during ‘Prisoners of the Dragon’. I have posted a YouTube video showing this as an example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO29N8W7Jes&feature=youtu.be

You can clearly see it happening at 2 minutes onwards.

This doesn’t appear to happen for sound effects of environmental objects or animal roars, just dialogue in my experience.

Surely fire and ice would be more thematic? If you can even sum up Primordus and Jormag like that anyway.

I suppose it depends on if ANet want the Elder Dragon story to last all of GW2’s life. We still have 4 dragons to go, though I’m pretty sure at a point before we kill the last remaining dragons, the whole ‘balance of magic’ plot point will raise its head and Tyria will have to face that threat first. Kill the dragons, or find an alternative to keep the balance in check?

Tyria mastery points

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

JayMack.8295

They did with LS3-Episode 1’s release – I have no idea what achievements they added them to, but as soon as I logged on post-patch I gained central Tyria mastery points.

Hopefully someone else can confirm which ones they were, but since mine were apparently already completed – I have no idea.

They’d have to add new achievements to central Tyria to coax people into it, but I suppose they could have done it with new fractal achievements – not sure why they didn’t honestly, but maybe they now believe central Tyria has enough mastery points?

[SPOILER] Justiciar Adrienne's bloodstone shield

in Living World

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

It’s in the first post. You don’t need to blow up the bloodstone. If you walk next to it, you’ll become ‘tethered’ to it.

Once ‘tethered’ to the bloodstone, use your special action key (the skill above 5) and then walk past her so that Adrienne is between YOU and the bloodstone (i.e. in the middle). The line of magic between yourself and the bloodstone is what you use to break her shield so keep her between yourself and the stone.

Hope that helps.

Necromancers: Minions and Society

in Lore

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

The book ‘Ghosts of Ascalon’ goes over this with a sylvari necromancer called Killeen. She raises a corpse in front of the party and some of the members find it disrespectful, particularly the human, Dougle.

Even in GW1 some humans found necromancy uncomfortable, because it deals with raising the dead of previous respected humans. Sylvari don’t really have this connection yet (if they ever will do), since they haven’t really formed a cultural idea of respecting the dead.

I believe it was also stated that humans find it particularly uncomfortable in GW2 because of creatures like Zhaitan raising their previous ancestors as slaves.

In GW1 it was shown that they actually grafted minions together from corpses since you needed to use a dead corpse to summon a minion (in most cases). GW2 gameplay seems to ignore this, and in some cases with Marjory, she can just summon bone walls as if from nowhere. Not really sure if there are gameplay or dev comments on the lack of bodies needed in GW2. I’ll leave that to the lore experts.

How did 99% of the Mursaat Die?

in Lore

JayMack.8295

Unless I’ve missed something, nothing points to golden structures needing to be in Maguuma, so it could be literally anywhere, if it even exists.

I don’t think Lazarus is lying about being the last of his kind (as far as he knows). The White Mantle have spent a lot of energy and resources to revive him alone and if more of his kind were around, I expect they would have either helped or exposed themselves to the WM by now.

I’m not sure how Mursaat come into existence…with the lore surrounding the Exalted, it’s possible that they go through a similar process. Maybe they were once humans, which is why they have such a tie to humanity in the first place. Have the origins of Mursaat ever been explained? EDIT: I suppose thinking about it, Mursaat actually predate humanity by thousands of years, so they can’t really be originally humans. Still begs the question, though – have their origins ever been explained?

One of the core themes of the Mursaat, though, is that they screw over other races to keep their own floating feet alive. I expect one of Lazarus’ core aims may be increasing the numbers of his own race (however that is achieved) in addition to whatever else his ‘virtuous’ goal is.

[SPOILER WARNING] Fates of Key Figures

in Lore

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

Some of the below may be wrong – I’m by no means a lore expert:

Well we still have that overarching plot point of what will happen when we kill the creatures responsible for keeping the balance of magic in check. There’s still the vision we saw from ‘The Eternal Alchemy’ in Season 2 of Zhaitan’s orb crashing into the centre, and now we’ve killed two of the EDs (as far as we know).

The thing about the Elder Dragons is – they absorb magic, they sleep, they leak it back out. It’s a cycle of death and destruction sure, but it’s a cycle nevertheless. If Tyria starts falling apart because we kill all 6 of them, then pretty much any sentient, self-preserving and intelligent race on Tyria that doesn’t have an escape plan is going to care about trying to prevent that.

Are the bloodstones the answer to preventing that destruction? If we destroy a bloodstone (assuming that’s possible, considering they’re growing) are we just going to make things worse? Are they a replacement worth keeping the balance of magic in check?

I’m assuming (and I don’t think it was confirmed in episode 1, though I may have missed it) that Lazarus was the thing responsible for absorbing all the magic that exploded from the bloodstone and I think Lazarus in all of the above is an interesting figure. Mursaat can flee the world, and they’ve shown in the past they WILL flee if the Elder Dragons present themselves as a threat, so does he actually care about the balance of magic in the world?

That’s why I’m excited he’s back now, because in the past we saw the Mursaat without the threat of Elder Dragons looming. Now he’s back, I’m intrigued to see what his plans are, especially since he seems uninterested in helping the splintered White Mantle with Kryta.

Lore Q&A

in Lore

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

Effectively you want a story mode for Raids, which is soloable. If they made it a no-reward purely story instance (or some minor one-time only reward), then I wouldn’t have an issue with that.

Issue with that is, and I expect this is a frustration Bobby experiences, is that doing that requires resources that he’s probably not in control of, i.e. people to implement it, people to adjust the boss encounters so they can be soloable, adjust the enemy encounters, etc. etc. etc.

And frankly, I’d rather he focus on creating good stories for raids and having someone else worrying about the implementation or the resources to do a story mode rather than have a basic raid with a lack of story or one so disconnected from the world it’s irrelevant and not worth caring about.

I think the raid storytelling is some of the best group storytelling in the game. It beats the storytelling in dungeons by a mile, so I want all of the community to be able to experience it as well (as I’m sure Bobby does!). I hope that a story mode IS implemented at some point but if they don’t have the resources available to do that, I’d rather he still sticks to making raids have a compelling and interesting story that is relevant to the world of Tyria.

I get the frustration, I do. I had to wrangle together 3- 4 other people just to get the full story experience of dungeons since most groups want to rush through, skip cutscenes and not absorb the story (a balance they’ve actually quite brilliantly achieved in raids) and I would have killed for a solo story mode for them back then.

Waypoint payments

in Lore

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

Yes and no. There are actual in-game lore instances where people mention the ‘waypoint fee’.

It’s not accessible anymore, but in Season 1, shortly after the marionette battle Logan escorts Taimi out and she mentions something along the lines of, ‘Okay! So long as you pay the waypoint fee’. It’s probably no-where close to that, and I’m struggling to find any dialogue related to it on the wiki, but I distinctly remember it since it’s one of the rare moments they mention waypoint fees.

I believe it’s also heavily implied that using waypoints is very expensive (despite how cheap they are in-game) and impractical for most of the citizens of Tyria. As Donari has also pointed out, most NPCs shown using them physically have to travel to the actual waypoint before they can travel to another as well.

To be fair to Angel, I’m not sure if there’s really an easy way to explain your money magically disappearing from your pockets. I suppose she could have just gone, ’It’s a gameplay thing. No lore – sorry!’ but every explanation I try to think of is a bit contrived and silly.

[SPOILER] Justiciar Adrienne's bloodstone shield

in Living World

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

How could you reach her without using the exact same method to break the shields on the mobs earlier?

You can actually remove the shields from those two eles by standing near them and not crossing the tether between them (because they don’t knock back, I’m guessing), so it lead me to believe that’s how you removed the shields in general.

At that point, the instance hadn’t taught me properly how to remove those shields and instead taught me that standing near the enemy can remove it, which was a tactic I repeated for Adrienne. It eventually clicked for me after a while (and multiple knock backs from her), and after that, it seemed like a ‘Of course, how stupid of me’ moment.

That’s the issue other people seem to be running into as well.

Roleplay question

in Lore

JayMack.8295

I’m not a roleplayer, so I can’t answer completely, but people do roleplay in GW2, yes.

There are some complaints from roleplayers about how well ANet foster the RP community, though. Megaservers made finding other roleplayers difficult/getting harassed by non-roleplayers easier.

The other complaint people seem to have is that there aren’t a lot of options to immerse yourself in the world, i.e. sitting on chairs or having enough emotes to display a wide variety of actions.

ANet recently added some new emotes that NPCs had access to that will help a bit (i.e. /talk) but in general I’d say the support for roleplayers compared to other MMOs is lacking in GW2.

Considering LS3 will probably take place in HoT maps (as well as core Tyria ones) you’re going to need HoT for it.

They have a fractal team developing new fractals at the moment that I’m assuming will not be gated behind HoT since it’s a core feature and also a logistical nightmare to tie behind an expansion pack.

When SAB comes back (between now and the rapture) you’ll have access to that, too. Anything affecting WvW or PvP (other than elite specs) cores will also get. Other than that, no idea.

Legendary weapons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

Fair enough making this decision but I still feel that you could be a bit clearer with us, Mo.

I appreciate that creating the legendary journey for each weapon isn’t a simple case of designing a precursor and then just applying it and bang, it’s done, but from our perspective it’s taken that team from November at the latest until the Spring update to release ONE legendary weapon. Why is this the case?

Are the tools the team have available to them that complicated to use that it takes a lot of time to create the steps? Is it designing the steps themselves that takes time? If it’s the tools, will they be redesigned to make it easier for them to develop the journey quicker?

‘Suspended indefinitely’ is also a bit ambiguous. Will that team continue crating legendary weapons in the future after a certain amount of living world content has been produced? Or are we just abandoning the HoT legendaries now altogether?

Again, I appreciate the candidness, but from all we know right now, it seems odd that it took this long to release one weapon with a team dedicated to it.

Designing Challenging Content

JayMack.8295

There are quite a few ways they can implement to prevent enrage mode, though. It could be ‘do (x) amount of damage in 10 seconds’, it could be ‘Do 8 CCs in (x) seconds’, or ‘do (x) amount of condition damage or it enrages’.

As others have already mentioned (and the blog itself) there are also a lot of other ways to kill your party without enrage. It doesn’t matter if you beat enrage mode if the boss also has a move that requires boon stripping or it’ll wipe your party, or it’ll taunt your entire party and then blow them up. If they give the bosses enough variety in their attacks/methods, zerk can’t be the only way to beat it.

Zerk being optimal isn’t just about the damage, it’s always been about the encounters/challenges not being varied enough to require other builds.

Designing Challenging Content

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: JayMack.8295

JayMack.8295

I think people are missing the point.

Zerker is definitely going to have its place in raids, but they’re designing it to (hopefully) not be the ONLY stat you bring. You’re going to need a mix of a party composition. Some zerkers, some more PVT types, some condition types, which is fine. Gutting zerker shouldn’t be the point of challenging content – it should be about specific roles that all need to fulfill their duty to succeed or the group faces the consequences.

JayMack.8295

I managed to play the Itzel event to its fullest – all the way to the Wyvern. It was fun, full of variety and interesting.

The feedback I have to give on it, though, is to balance the length of some of them. Throwing food at the Nuhoch took ages, and it wasn’t clear if it was working or not until I spotted the Itzel leaving one by one after food was thrown at him. People began leaving as they thought it was bugged. It takes way too long and needs better feedback that the food being thrown is actually doing something.

The Wyvern fight was fun, but it scaled really badly. It did a lot of damage to a big group, which was great, but when we started damaging it, it was dead within 20 seconds and it didn’t even manage to take off in the air for CCs to be used. Additionally, it was invulnerable for about a minute whilst being able to damage us. I don’t know if it was meant to be invulnerable so it could kill all the NPCs, but it felt unfair that it could kill us without us being able to damage it back.

Overall, love the variety between event chains/events. It’s nice to see ANet have some fresh ideas.

All I can say on this topic is, I really am dissapointed that this is one of the 7 masteries we are getting, let me preface by saying if you want to use this track or are excited about it then that is absolutely fine good for you! Now with that said, the only thing really interesting was the final thing in which you can get non-existent recipes now, everything else just seems… very situational at best, I guess it’s just not for me then?

Now please do excuse me while I go laugh hysterically at the comment about being able to help “newer players progress through difficult pve content” you mean the content that is non-existent in the game right now? Post-level 80 maybe I’m being a little unfair, but pre-level 80 the game is a cake-walk right now and if you truly believe that the mentor system’s reviving will actually be necessary to do anything pre-level 80 your way out of touch with your game, unless your a level 20 character throwing your head against a level 50 champion I just don’t get what you guys are talking about

You are excused. When you return, I can help you with a few things you missed. There will be 39 mastery tracks when HoT launches, not seven. It does sound like this isn’t for you, but with 38 others to choose from and more to come after launch, you will very likely find a lot that are for you.

I’m confused. I was under the impression that there are 7 mastery tracks, but 39 masteries within those tracks

The core Tyria masteries use a separate line and separate mastery points. Since we can’t earn mastery points in Tyria (as they don’t exist in the maps yet) you can’t unlock them.

The only one that’s missing is the mentor mastery line but that’s in development so isn’t meant to be there afaik.

Adventures provide mastery points if you get gold, usually 2. So complete them.

There’s a mastery point you can reach with your glider as well.
