For LWS3e5 you guys released a wallpaper, I assume you guys will also release some wallpapers for the next Expac and maybe the next few episodes. If the artists are making the art at native 4K or if they are vector graphics, can you release some wallpapers at 4k? A decent amount of us are at higher resolutions and if it’s as simple as “Save image as”, we would really appreciate it.

If your artists are only creating their raw content at 1920×1200 and raster images… I guess that is fine….

Economics of Mystic Coin & Hardened Leather

Why is it even necessary to entice players to sell them, hoarding or not? Why is it always Anet’s job to ensure players get MC coins at the rate players see fit at the price they want to pay? That’s not how it works. I would hope an Economics major could get that.

its a designed economy, so it kind of is their focus. If they were laissez faire as you suggest, they would never have hired an economics guy.

anet may choose to change it or not, but its still of interest to economy focused people because its one of the issues they deal with in designing and analyzing an economy.

note, he says IF they want to change the behavior, he knows that maybe they dont want to.

basically, while this may bore you, economy focused people would probably find it interesting

That doesn’t make sense … designed economy does NOT mean players should get what they want, at the prices they want in the volumes they want. It has nothing to do with boring … it has everything to do with sensible.

the boring comment was me explaining why an economics dude would want to talk about it.

the fact that the economy is designed means that player satisfcation matters to the economy.

Again … the goal here of the economy is not 100% player satisfaction … it’s simply mats available to players at market prices.

no one said its 100% player satisfaction?

Then why do you bring it up the idea that a designed economy means customer satisfaction if you understand that not all players can be satisfied in the first place? That’s a non-starter of an argument. I guess you just flip flop for whatever suits your position?

The fact is simple. The economy isn’t designed to make everyone happy. Furthermore, if someone doesn’t like the price because it’s expensive and that makes them unhappy, you can be assured that sellers are as happy that people are buying at that price as well … so you can drop the nonsensical ‘dissatisfaction’ ploy as a reason for Anet to do something here.

The goal should be an unsatisfied player base because that is what makes the most money for Anet and NCSoft! Good idea!

I don’t know why Anet funnels players into certain things now. First with HOT you funnel people into the HOT maps to get their elites. Then you funnel people into PVP last season by paying them liquid gold to get ascended gear. Now you funnel people into raids to get legendary armor. What made this game great originally is that you supported every game mode and people could play however they want. Now it’s like management knows what’s best for us and funnels people into whatever game mode they want people to play.

Analogy would only work if there was only one car model. Like armor tiers, cars come in a variety of tiers too. It’d be like the difference between a Ford > Kia > Audi > Mercedes > Porsche as the difference between blues, greens, rares, exotics, and ascended. Even then, car features may be a better thing to use as that’s closer to stat combos of armor.

Honestly you bring up a good point. Now that leather is in everything from gossamar patches to guild halls, the better analogy would have been Government said “cars need to be gold plated but so must all homes as well”.

To your point on different models etc, think about crafting any medium armor without leather. Even a green level 60 armor, still needs leather. I’m not just talking about the hardened leather crisis, I’m talking about all leather. Then we also have to use leather for ascended items that aren’t even medium.

The problem with the idea that something is ‘too expensive’ is that it makes no sense. Take a car … don’t care what make or model … is it too expensive? For some people, it could be but for some others, it might not. The point … ‘too expensive’ is not an objective assessment of hardened leather price.

Therefore, to make an objective problem statement using it makes no sense whatsoever. If you have to ask WHO it’s too expensive for, and have no target audience, then how can you even implement a sensible solution to that? You can’t. The whole approach that everyone takes to complain about this simply demonstrates exactly what I’m saying here.

Anet has done exactly the correct thing here; allow players to take more control of the market by introducing more bandwidth to farm. The market will dictate the price all goods in it; it’s completely self-regulating. In otherwords, Anet has washed their hands and put the pricing in control of the players. Appealing to ’it’s too expensive’ has no impact on an entity that WANTS a self-regulating market to exist.

I love analogies. Let’s try this one out. Car market is OK, if anything cars are “too affordable” but who knows what that means right because it’s all objective. But the government looks and says “wow, this is way too affordable, every car needs to be gold plated from now on”. Prices for cars sky rocket. Now the government says “you know what, we are going to be ‘hands off’ on the economy, let’s just see what happens to car prices”. Car prices continue to sky rocket because they need to be gold plated.

Finally the government steps in and says “we’ve mostly been hands off but we’re going to open up a gold mine on government land, feel free to come here and mine gold, it only costs $1500/oz and you can take out as much as you want”. A lot of people say “I’m not doing that, I can get it for $1271/oz from China”. Some people use the gold mine though because they just like to mine their own gold. Car prices continue to skyrocket.

But don’t worry, the Government is “hands off” now. It will definitely equalize… right?

The first time you try to do all the HP’s by yourself it really sucks and it helps to do a train ESPECIALLY if you don’t have all the useful maguuma masteries. But after you’ve gotten all the points for one character and you have things like updraft, bouncing mushrooms, nuhock wallows, you pretty quickly figure out what you can solo and it’s not so bad.

I still think the system is very flawed though. If someone hates the HOT maps, tough luck, Anet will force you to play these crap maps in order to play the elite spec you bought for $30 to $60. At least in the core game, you could get to 80 by doing a lot of different stuff and any map was eligible to get you XP. I think this “funnel system” is what drove away a lot of the player base.

That’s assuming the cost difference between the two is the actual reason why each sport is performing as you say.

We can also go about this another way using your example’s theme. Let’s say that you have Sport A which requires a lot of individual skill and coordination with your team while Sport B does not. Sport A is intended for those that love that kind of thing while Sport B is intended for all athletes. Sport B has more of a athlete base. Is either Sport better or worse? Should Sport A be dumbed down from what it was intended to appeal to all athletes?

Barriers really haven’t been lowered with dungeons or HoT yet you claim them to be an issue. Any build is viable for dungeons and HoT. So what exactly is the barrier other than what is player imposed? How about raids? Players impose meta builds but raids can clearly be completed without those if everyone knows the mechanics.

There are kids in africa that play soccer with balls made from condoms (literally). This kid has a 0% chance of playing golf. Has nothing to do with athleticism and preferences.

To be clear, the dungeon and HOT comment was specifically to the “play your way” quote. They don’t have any barriers.

Why is soccer a super popular sport around the world and golf is massively struggling right now? In one sport, all you need is a ball. In one sport you need hundreds of dollars of gear and a special location to play and practice. If you want a game to grow, lower barriers. If you want a game to languish, raise barriers. It’s a pretty simple concept.

I am in a very large guild but I would still support Anet lowering barriers for people who pick up GW2 and want to start a guild. If we tell these people “tough luck, you can’t play the game that way”, they will leave. We watched it happen with dungeons, we watched it happen with HOT, and we are going to watch it happen again and again. There are a crap ton of other MMO’s. We need existing players to stay. We need old players to return. We need new players to try the game and keep playing.

There might be “more ways” to acquire hard leather, but the drop rate in each acquisition method is so low that I’m still swimming in way more gossamer than I am in hard leather. Your arguments don’t make any rational sense.

Like I said in my post, gossamer has relatively few uses compared to hardened leather. My arguments make little sense because you’re selectively ignoring parts of them.

Edit: I’ll also add that I arguing for or against hardened leather prices being out of line in that post. What I was arguing against was the poster using gossamer as a basis for how hardened leather prices should be when they have different supply/demand metrics.

To be fair I think this is part of the problem. To “fix” leather prices, Anet slapped leather into a bunch of recipes it shouldn’t be in. I’m surprised you don’t need leather to bake food. Anyways, this is why gossamer is cheaper than leather.

I love it … if anything, T5 leather drops in SIGNIFICANT abundance in Doric lake. I mean, there is nothing less reasonable than complaining about the price of something you can farm hundreds of as a zerg. How lazy can people get? You wanted a leather farm to avoid the expensive prices on the TP for leather, then there is complaining about the price of T5 leather on the TP … and it’s the MOST frequent drop in Doric Light … no wonder these complaints can’t be taken seriously.

And despite all that, barely anyone farms thick leather and at most there is 1 group going during peak hours. Obviously you’re the only person in the game that knows how economically beneficial the thick leather farm is. It’s definitely the best use of time and also the most fun.

The problem is that you’re making the mistake of using a data point right before the update that gave the leather farm. You’re essentially cherry picking the low point while completely ignoring exactly why it was low in the first place despite me telling you numerous times. It’s no different than the price of oranges going up because of a supply scare, going back down where nothing happened, and then you using the price difference to argue that orange prices were out of line because they were dropping.

OMG WTF are you even talking about. Leather prices fell because of the announcement of the leather farm area which nobody knew what it was going to be. They speculated it would be good for players and lower prices so they fell. I am taking prices from THE DAY BEFORE THE PATCH WAS ANNOUNCED.

Here’s me: Fact: the patch notes came out on 1/27, I am taking prices from the day before.
Here’s you: Making up some player numbers and making up what is going on with no facts whatsoever.

You want an apples and oranges argument? Here’s my analogy using what you’re doing. The news comes out on 1/27 that a GMO orange is going to hit the market and yields are going to be huge. People start selling orange futures because they think prices will go down. You say “I haven’t taken any measurements, and I have no proof whatsoever, but people might be eating less oranges maybe”. Orange prices go down but it turns out the GMO orange doesn’t increase yields and causes cancer. Prices for oranges go back up. I am measuring prices from 1/26 when nobody realized the GMO orange existed. You are saying that’s not valid because of your super scientific opinion that “maybe people were like, eating less oranges or something”.

In regards to leatherworking, it’s misleading because you’re claiming the total cost is out of line and blaming all tiers of leather when the primary cause is from only one tier. The difference to reach 400 is roughly 4-5G. It’s not that large of a gap.

Which sounds low until you put a % around it and then you realize it’s off.

As far as player stats, isn’t it widely accepted that new LS content doesn’t cause players to not play the game but instead bring back those that do not, even if only for a couple days? Your pre-patch pricing is misleading because you’re using numbers that are impacted by the return of people onto the maps and most importantly which include the effects of speculators in regards to the announcements of the leather farm.

Can you prove any of the above statement with actual facts?

I get enough leather within about two hours of farming. DR doesn’t take affect until about five hours or so in which you can just hop off to another maps and do some things to reset it. You could also hop onto another character as well. Had you paid attention to my post, I said that it was not intended as a gold farm. It provides a direct source for leather which had been requested by players for years.

Got it, so the leather farm is a success because you only have to mindlessly farm for 2 hours a day to make 1 time gated leather item… Are you arguing for or against the leather farm?

You’re completely ignoring how much leather gets exchanged on the TP. The amount farmed by players are but a drop in an ocean. I place orders for to make 210 elonian leather and they easily get filled within a few hours depending on how often I get outbid. The amount farming the leather are not large enough to impact demand. Demand which fluctuates throughout the day.

You’re missing the point that prices have gone higher DESPITE the farm existing. If you want to make a counter-factual argument that “it would be worse without the farm” you can, but that isn’t the point. If the farm was at all useful it would have at least put a ceiling on T5 leather prices which is the vast majority of the leather farm output.

Edit:

Thin and coarse leather prices since November have been flat.

Rugged leather prices were flat since November with the price level increased by about 20 copper in March along with some spikes. Supply has greatly increased recently so price could fall.

Thick leather was trending down until they had more sinks for it. It also has a farm that produces quite a lot of it.

Only hardened leather has had an upwards trend and it’s a very small one.

So yeah, you were being misleading by lumping all of leather together.

I have no idea why you are measuring since November considering the patch announcement is from Jan 27 but Thick Leather is up by an entire silver (50%) and Hardened Leather is up from 31s to 34s (10%). All the rest are basically flat. Unfortunately, the leather people most care about, Thick (for elonian cord) and Hardened (for gossamer patches) are both up, one of which significantly up.

Also, to bring some numbers to this. The laurel vendor sells pieces of exotic gear. 5 laurels will get you 2 chests of gear for any specific class, which means each chest is 2.5 laurels. Rouding up to 4 laurels to chest due to the RNG nature (eg you could get items not at level 80, or 2 items for the same slot), this still means that Anet “values” exotic gear at approximately 4 laurels each.

You can buy crafting bags for 1 laurel each, and then sell the mats for direct gold. Which means that based on the vendors they implemented, ANet values 1 piece of exotic gear at around the cost of 4 crafting bags. That’s not 10 gold worth of mats. Anet themselves don’t think exotics are worth that much. So why the hell are they ok with artificially forcing the price up to over 10 gold per exotic piece due to the asinine cost of leather?

Great point on a back end way of mathing out an alternate price for exotics.

The cost of leatherworking going from 0-400 is ~30G which is roughly on par with the other crafts using the other two materials. The difference comes with T6 which makes it ~70G to go from 400 to 500. It’s a little misleading to lump all leather together when the issue is just one specific tier.

It’s not misleading because the only reason to craft is legendaries or ascended. Basically every exotic can be bought except things like viper’s but if you’re going to craft viper’s you might as well craft the ascended version. Also, from 0-400 it is still 24% and
13% more expensive.

Speaking of misleading, expand the graph out more than immediately before the update that brought the farm. Account for increased players playing as well as the announcements of the leather farm. These all contributed to the temporary downward spike in prices with the latter having the greater effect. Prices have more of less been stable.

Do you have stats that show increased players playing? I have never seen Anet publish population numbers. Also I did mention pre-patch pricing. My point is that the prices have now exceeded the price that they were pre-patch announcement.

The leather farm works fairly well if you intend to use the leather. When I farmed it, I usually got all of the leather I needed for the daily T7. It’s not intended to be a gold farm which is why not many players bother with it. I think I was making about 14G/hr from it if I sold everything.

I’m going to pretty much call BS here unless you were farming for hours and swapping characters to offset the DR at which point you should have just been farming SW, fractals, or something else for 1/2 the time and then buying the leather on the TP.

With so few people doing the farm, you’re not going to see a noticeable impact on the leather market. So much leather gets exchanged on a daily impact which easily outweighs how much that is being brought in from it.

The number of players farming with the intention of using leather further reduces how much eventually ends upon the TP.

So few people do it because, as I mention above, it makes no rational or economic sense to do the leather farm unless the content there is something you really like (which is doubtful for the majority of the population and is evidenced by how few people do it). Players doing the leather farm and then using that leather would impact prices because they are no longer buying leather in the open market. That in itself should cause lower prices. The only way it wouldn’t is if all of those people never bought leather in the first place which is incredibly unlikely.

Exactly. The obvious solution to do things slowly is to just increase salvage rates until prices get to a “normal” level. The fast solution is to change refinement ratios.

For the people who think the leather farm is working, I will tell you, as someone with over 15 years of experience in finance, it is absolutely not working.

1) Increased supply should decrease cost for several reasons aside from direct selling into the market but also from reduced buy orders in the market.

2) Markets do not trade on what is going on now, they trade on where people expect things to go. For example, the leather market traded down before the farm even came out, then traded up when people realized the farm wasn’t going to impact pricing. So the idea we need to “wait and see” is false.

3) The other argument I often hear is “this was meant to stop leather prices from getting higher”. Well we’re at 2.70s on thick leather sections which is the most prevalent drop from the leather farm. If the leather farm can’t put a ceiling on the leather it produces, the ceiling theory clearly was wrong. Economically we will eventually hit a ceiling but considering thick leather is 2.70s and silk scraps are 0.75s, the ceiling needed to be 2 silver ago.

Suggest improvements: There are several ways to improve leather prices. Reduce refinement rates, increase drop chances for unstable leather hides, increase salvage rates, etc…
Give details and examples: Leather prices are completely out of line with other crafting materials. See point 2 for facts.
Present opinions as opinions, not facts:
To go from 0 to 500 it costs 44 gold on armorcrafting, 57 gold on tailoring, and 131 gold for leather.
The centaur “leather farm” was introduced to help the situation yet the situation has gotten WORSE. Basically all leather is above pre-patch levels and pre-patch announcement levels.
Speak from experience: Leather wasn’t a problem but then Anet said “leather is too cheap” and instead of slightly tweaking salvage rates they 1) changed refinement ratios, 2) nerfed drop rates, 3) nerfed salvage rates, and 4) added leather to a ton of recipes. Instead of doing 1 or 2 of these, THEY DID ALL AT ONCE.
Be accurate: Everything I said is accurate
Use references: gw2crafts.net, gw2spidy.com, gw2bltc.com, https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/How-to-Give-Good-Feedback-1/
Avoid making it personal: I am sure everyone at Anet is trying to do a good job, but this is one place they have made many mistakes.
Don’t take things personally OK
Share positives: On the upside… high leather prices… help new players… by.. uhh… well maybe it is good for… elonian.. or .. evon gnashblade.. and hoof.. warm stone… dull fang.

The Devs have just recently referred to this blog post: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/welcome-to-the-super-adventure-festival/

Nothing (about development) has changed at this time (according to the recent statement).

Good luck.

Yes I’ve read that , but this isn’t just about current development, but also the indefinite future. Back in 2013 they said they plan to do four world altogether, and they also said world 3 will come with red weapons and 4 with purple.

Now that red weapons entered the picture without W3 being added, I fear they permanently decided to cancel all future worlds. Now despise this, there is still a chance W3 & 4 isn’t canceled, but if they are, I don’t want to get disappointed each and every year.

I think to get the full picture you need to look up what guild wars 2 was making in revenues back in 2013 vs 2016 or 2017. They aren’t even maintaining dungeons because they don’t have the resources so they clearly are not going to have the resources to expand on a seasonal gimmick when they can’t maintain a core part of the game that is here all year round.

The scaling on this thing is ridiculous. Did it once in a giant zerg and it took 3 tries. Did it with some guildies in a group of probably 6 or 7 first try. Also, agree with posters above about how people don’t know how break bars work. If you have a small group, 1 chrono can break the bar by himself.

Roll a mesmer, drop a portal before a tough jump, if you fail, portal back up. Repeat often.

My second part of this would be to add a repeatable mastery track like the above, with some high (5 million?) total that gives you a Central Tyria Mastery point. Thus, players could grind out those points over time instead of doing content they don’t really want to do.

This please, I really don’t want to waste 500 gold getting some collection I don’t care about

I don’t know why but this happens constantly when i fight Tequatl over in the megalaser area. I have a mouse with free spin on the wheel so what i do is spin my wheel really hard so it’s constantly zooming out and that fights off the game’s attempt to zoom in.

Just give elementalist a decent elite skill. PLEASE. FGS is OK. Rebound seems to only save people 1/100th of the times I use it, GoE is OK.

Finally coming back to this game since a year or two, was just wondering what main things has changed since then.

Also, a tier of the classes during the meta. Like who I should stay away from, etc.

Thanks!

Leather is really really really expensive right now and Anet doesn’t want to fix it

Leather is expensive right now, and ANet are making changes aimed at addressing that, but given the pent up demand, and the relatively slow moving nature of economies, we won’t know how effective that was for several more months, at least.

Fixed that for you. At least, unless you like whiplash as the price tanks to below vendor sell value, and then spikes up through the roof again, because every correction is an enormous overreaction intended to change value instantly…

Gotcha, didn’t know they couldn’t fix salvage tables a few percent a week, or fix refinement by reducing 1 input from the current 4 on something like thick leather. Just because when Anet used to fix something thought up every conceivable idea and then implemented all of them at the same time, doesn’t mean that’s what has to happen on a go forward basis.

Not sure if you pay attention to this kind of thing but leather has been a mess for over a year now. If you think the new crafting requirements for PVP and Fractal gear is going to help the situation, you’re completely out of your mind.

I agree with SlippyCheeze. People had unrealistic expectations of what the farm would do. It’s going to take a while for any farm to affect the global demand for a high-volume mat like leather.

It’s definitely not the most lucrative gold/hour farm, but it is very efficient for those who want to ‘gather’ their own leather.

Do you realize the “long term” effect of leather has been zero impact? Just pull up a price chart.

Blocking dps meters

im not geting harrrased tbh but i do see other players being harrased or kicked out of groups for low dps and i dont agree with that
the fact that Anet has allowed this elitist tool in game that sees there own player base being excluded from content just astounds me

The hard part about it is that DPS meters are a great tool for very high level raiders trying to min max their runs and set a world record. The toxic thing is you get people who are NOT trying to set a world record THINKING they are going to set a world record and kicking people. I don’t think there is a solution other than people raiding with a guild or finding friends to raid with.

Or some of those people started enjoying HOT maps after the April fixes. That’s another possibility.

I noticed a drop in complaints after that update came out.

Unfortunately, if that were true, revenues for GW2 would not be worse than even Aion Online.

Generally when you come on here people are going to say they love HOT maps because the people who hated HOT maps quit the game. It’s called “survivorship bias”.

I didn’t think the mobs in HOT are that hard at all, I just got annoyed because the 2D minimap is completely useless for a 3D map and there’s a lot of routes that involve backtracking. Dry Top is 3D but when you want to go up, there’s almost always a thing that gives you the jump ability.

In HOT when you want to go up, you can be sure the bouncing mushroom was 400 yards in the opposite direction and you have to backtrack until you find it, take the mushroom, then an updraft, then a ley line, to get to where you want to go.

Offset by the fact that more people are likely to complain when they don’t like something than say nice things when they do. That’s a bias too.

Forums of every MMORPG are filled with people complaining. They go to forums TOO complain. I have well over 200 people in my guild playing and enjoying the game. I think 3 of us post on forums. The other 197 are playing and having a good time.

There are people I know who USED to post on the forums, who still like the game and stopped because of the negativity here. It affected their enjoyment of the game. It was too much work to say they liked something. They were attacked as fan bois or Anet shills or white knights.

Saying more people are saying they like it because those who didn’t have left the game is only a small part of the story. I think the people who don’t like it are going to talk a lot louder than the people who do.

I actually agree with you but that is kind of my point. The complaints of HOT maps has gone down a ton over the last year and I think your point is very right: Generally, people complain louder than they praise. Therefore, the fact that the complaining has subsided means these people have given up and left. =)
