Viability of largos as a playable race

in Lore

VIVorcha.7853

Personally I feel that the largos are a relatively generic fantasy race (blue humans with wings attached) that doesn’t really fit into the world and has quite shallow lore compared to, for example, the tengu which have been around since prophecies. Their lore is, as the OP mentions, based mostly on not being known.

The lack of lore means that Anet has more freedom to develop them, and could more easily make them fit as a playable race. And they aren’t really any more generic than anthromorphic animals. Not that I’m hating on those races; the charr are my favorite playable race at the moment.

However, what actually matters in the end with new races is the appearance – and this is actually another area where i find them lacking. The wings, assuming they are can’t be taken off, would clip through almost every back item (which are the GW2 counterpart of TF2 hats).

There is a precedent for this. The charr have tails that clip through their lower armor. Though I will concede that the wings would be more of a problem.

This combined with my personal initial uninterest for a race built entirely around murdering people honorably actually makes me hope that whatever playable race comes next wont be largos. I am honestly fine with the current five races, and might even have preferred if they had stuck with only humans like GW1 – and instead focusing on the various cultures within the race. But that’s just my opinion.

As opposed to a race entirely built around being mad scientists, or a race built entirely around being in touch with nature, or a race entirely built around warmongering, or a race built around killing monsters with honor? And we haven’t seen enough of the largos to conclude that they’re nothing but Ye Olde Proude Warrior Race, in any case.

Viability of largos as a playable race

VIVorcha.7853

DISCLAIMER: I apologize for beating a dead horse, but I think this game badly needs something like a new race.

A lot of GW2 players are hoping for a new playable race. From the discussions I’ve seen, it mostly boils down to tengu vs. largo. I’m going to be giving some reasons largos would make a good playable race, and some reasons there might be issues with that.

First, the positive:

1. So far, each of the five playable races has been paired with an elder dragon as a major antagonist (lorewise, not gameplay wise). Those pairs are as follows: Zhaitan and Humans, Mordremoth and Sylvari, Kralkatorrik and Charr, Jormag and Norn, Primordus and Asura. The last confirmed elder dragon (as far as I’m aware) is the deep sea dragon (whom I will hereafter refer to as Bubbles). I’m not aware of any unique connection between the largos and Bubbles, but both inhabit the Unending Ocean, so it would make sense to have them set up as enemies of each other. In fact, you could use the activities of Bubbles as a reason the largos are suddenly more common on the surface world. It would also be a good opportunity for Anet to give us more lore regarding Bubbles.

2. Building off the above, this would also give Anet the opportunity to focus on the underwater aspects of the game. Not only does underwater combat need rebalancing, but there also seems to be a lack of underwater content. That’s unfortunate, since the underwater gameplay is really fun and unique. Just imagine an entire underwater map to explore!

3. The largos are an interesting and original race. Now, I’m not saying Anet couldn’t do a good job with the tengu, but so far, tengu are just bird-people, while largos are dark elf-butterfly-merfolk-ninjas. I would say the latter is cooler.

4. Largos would be easier to convert the armor models for.

Now, unfortunately, there are also some problems with making the largos a playable race as opposed to other possible races. These are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

1. Making them playable would require getting rid of some of the mystery that makes them so intriguing, including both their culture and the appearance of their faces.

2. The scene in the Personal Story where you meet Sayeh, and the few scenes following that, would need to be rewritten to accommodate the possibility that the player is a largos. Also, NPCs would need to occasionally comment on the fact that you’re a largos to avoid breaking immersion.

If I think of anything else, I’ll add more.

I think the largos would work better as a playable race, but that’s just, like, uh, my opinion, man.

Still waiting for end game content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

VIVorcha.7853

Yeah, its kind of annoying when I reach level 80 with my favorite character and the story just abruptly ends.

The final battle wasn’t good enough to justify a lack of end game content.

They need to add additional campaigns for level 80 characters. See: Neverwinter. The game is overall mediocre, but at least they’re constantly adding new end game campaigns.

I would prefer them constantly releasing new permanent story content instead of working on the living story.

How about this: level 80 characters gain access to Elona or Cantha. Each continent would feature a special campaign, complete with new characters, CHOICES ACTUALLY MATTERING, companion characters (heroes, anyone?) and possibly new skills.

That would be amazing and totally worth the wait.

Bioware-style Romances

This is a simple suggestion but would be complicated to implement.

Since the Living Story features (generally) likeable characters, why not add player-NPC romances to the game?

It doesn’t have to be as extensive or adult as Dragon Age Origins, but having the option to flirt with certain characters would add greater character depth; something that is fairly lacking in both the Personal Story and the Living World.

VIVorcha.7853

Sorry if this isn’t the right forum, but I don’t know where to post suggestions now that the suggestions forum has been archived.

The final battle was really underwhelming. I pictured the final battle as hundreds of NPCs, including Destiny’s Edge, Trahearne, and the various other notable characters, all charging at Zhaitan.

Not 2spam and ded.

Some specific things that would make good improvements:

1. Trahearne having a heroic death. This would reduce the feeling of him stealing the spotlight, and also get rid of an insanely annoying character. And frankly, Anet has already killed off the likeable characters, so why not kill off the annoying ones as well?

2. Make the final dungeon single player. You shouldn’t need four other people to complete YOUR personal story.

3. Add a scene where the player character performs some insane act of heroism that makes them seem like what they’re supposed to be: the hero of the story.

What skill

in Engineer

VIVorcha.7853

It’s the “Super Speed” toolbelt skill from the Slick Shoes utility skill. It fixes movement speed at 400, regardless of whether the Engineer’s in combat or not. It also ignores slowing effects. Since combat speed varies around 105-210 (depending on backpedaling/running forward, can add 33% for swiftness), it allows the Engineer to quite literally move up to 4 times faster than you. Quite a good skill. Rarely picked up because most builds can’t find room for it.

Except it doesn’t work, thanks to Anet’s movement speed cap.

Engineers need a trait revamp

in Suggestions

Posted by: VIVorcha.7853

VIVorcha.7853

At the moment about half our traits aren’t worth taking. The grandmasters almost all suck, and the Alchemy line is the only one that’s really solid.

Specifically, the bad traits are:

Acidic Elixirs: Why would I be throwing elixirs at the enemy instead of myself or my allies?
Exploit Weakness: Too situational and too easy to counter.
Accelerant-Packed Turrets: Turrets are meant to be kept up, not destroyed, and the blast radius is pathetic.
Autodefense Bomb Dispenser: This should be a Master trait. It’s about the power level of what a master trait should be.
Sharpshooter: A crit proc trait with low chance, low duration, and mediocre effect. Nothing that great about this. RNG is a bad thing. All crit procs should be guaranteed on-crits abilities.
Infused Precision: Another crit proc with bad chance and low duration, but it’s slightly better. 100% chance would be better. Warriors have Furious Speed.
Precise Sights: Another crit proc with bad chance and weak effect.
Target the Weak: This has potential, but it’s again too situational.
Coated Bullets: The effect only applies to two skills and is so situational it’s barely noticeable.
Target the Maimed: I don’t really get this trait. All our weapons that reliably apply bleeding don’t benefit from a direct damage increase.
Modified Ammunition: You need to have 6 conditions up on someone before taking this is better than just taking Rifle Mod, and pistols don’t benefit from direct damage increase.
Napalm Specialist: This looks kind of nice, but then you realize that our class can already easily achieve 100% burning uptime without it. A damage increase for burning would make this trait more worthwhile.
Metal Plating: Turrets are a bit weak to start, and this trait doesn’t help at all. Autotool Installation should be placed in this slot, and this trait removed.
Autotool Installation: See above. Also, this trait doesn’t heal anywhere near enough.
Power Shoes: +25% movement speed… IN COMBAT. Don’t even get me started on the bad movement speed cap in this game. The problem is that “in combat” effects are subject to the badly coded system that determines when you’re “in combat”. Too often I lose my speed advantage because the game decides I’m no longer fighting.
Performance Enhancement: I don’t even what? Why? This doesn’t have any synergy at all with this trait line.
Rifled Turret Barrels: This should be a Master trait. It’s not worthy of Grandmaster status.
Elixir-Infused Bombs: Does this really belong in Inventions? Sure, it’s a healing trait, but Backpack Regenerator is too, and it’s arguably more fitting for Inventions.
Acidic Coating: Grr…. RNG proccing.
Transmute: The worst trait. Ever. How about, instead of having a negligible chance of activating, Transmute has the effect of “Convert an incoming condition into a boon. 30 second cooldown”.
Backpack Regenerator: This probably belongs in Inventions.
Energy Conversion Matrix: Do I really need to say anything about this one?
Automated Response: It’s one of those traits that’s ALMOST good, but not quite. It doesn’t remove conditions you already have, and at 25% health, you’re basically already dead. This doesn’t seem very useful. I’ve seen some defend it, but they always get told to drop it.
Always Prepared: This is almost as bad as Transmute. NOBODY EVER uses it.
Speedy Gadgets: For some reason, this doesn’t apply to Gadget toolbelts. Glitch?
Kit Refinement: Ever since the nerfbat hit this trait, nothing has been the same. Nobody uses it anymore.
Deployable Turrets: All it does is add ground-targeting. That’s not very useful. This is probably the only trait that could actually be considered a liability to have, depending on your playstyle.
Inertial Converter: The “at 25% health” thing works when the ability aids you in surviving at that amount, but getting your toolbelts back is not the top priority if your health has reached 25%. 50 or 75% might be better.
Packaged Stimulants: I can’t really see this being that useful. Ground targeting is good when a skill has an actual radius, and medkit skills don’t.
Scope: It only actually helps with 1 and 3 on the Pistol, and 1 on the Rifle. All other skills can’t reach 600 units or are weakened when you use them at that distance. And even with those traits, it’s only 10% crit chance increase. Lame.

In general, we need to remove a lot of traits, change a lot of traits, and add a lot of traits.
-More toolbelt traits. It’s our class mechanic, after all.
-More gadget traits. It’s an entire set of skills, I think it deserves more traits.
-New grandmasters.

Our trait lines need to be reworked

in Engineer

Posted by: VIVorcha.7853

VIVorcha.7853

We have a handful of good traits, and most of our Alchemy line is good, but our grandmasters are pretty bad and our other trait lines lack internal synergy.

If you want an example of a trait line that’s well designed, look at the Guardian lines. Almost all of the traits can be used in synergy with the associated stat boosts and other traits in the line.

Some traits that should be added in a rework:

-Trait to reduce the cooldown of turret skills and their overcharges
-More Gadget traits in general
-More Toolbelt traits in general

Some traits, like Scope, are useless and should be removed.

Admittedly, Rangers also deserve a rework, but this is not the forum for discussing that.

Booby Trap is an interrupt, and would be fine if it was 2nd skill, but the third skill is supposed to be potentially life saving.

That doesn’t hold up for half the classes in the game.

Really, there’s no “supposed to be”. Classes’ downstates are very different.
Is Engineer too weak? Yes, but I think mostly due to Booby Trap not being what you’d expect (when cast, next person to successfully finish you instead gets blown away, lasts X seconds). This is more of a style issue to me though, “Booby Trap” implies something with it’s name.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_downed_skills

Guardians and Rangers have powerful heals that are easily capable of self revive, as well as powerful disables. Warriors can get up and fight normally. Thieves have two powerful escape skills. Mesmers have two clone skills that can distract or even kill the enemy. Necros have Fear and a skill that damages enemies around them. Elementalists have an escape skill and an immobilize.

Those are all incredibly useful. Engineers got a skill that pulls the enemy to them, and a skill that’s only as useful as the 2 skill for Guardians.

Time to fix engineer downed state abilities

in Engineer

Posted by: VIVorcha.7853

VIVorcha.7853

I disagree. I think that the engineer’s downstate is the top tier. The downside is that stability makes engy’s downstate skill worthless. There is exactly two interrupts in there. If the enemy is already on top of you, then the interrupt is worth as much as warrior’s hammer knockdown.

Engineer’s stomp is better than thieves. Why even though thieves can prevent two stomps? Because engineers downstate has much more utility. Not only you can prevent their own death but also pull enemies away from what they are doing. Also, most players already know the annoyance of the thief’s #3 down skill. So they can just auto-attack the thief down until they die, which removes the purpose of the stealth. If a player auto-attack engineers down state, they will be pulled and/or exploded away.

Also, if you have 3 enemies on top of you, you can pull the 4th enemy that is going somewhere else. There is no need for too many cooks in the kitchen.

I hope you’re joking.

Pulling an enemy over so they can more easily damage you is totally counter-productive.

Booby Trap is an interrupt, and would be fine if it was 2nd skill, but the third skill is supposed to be potentially life saving.

in Engineer

VIVorcha.7853

We can all unite to agree that our downed skills suck, right?

The 1 skill applies a random condition, making the DPS from it not reliable enough to achieve a rally.

The 2 skill only hits a single target and INVITES THEM INTO MELEE RANGE TO STOMP YOU. The 2 skill in the downed state is supposed to be defensive, and bringing an enemy closer does not fall into that category. The only thing going for it is that it interrupts, but all the other 2 skills do that better.

The 3 skill takes forever to warm up, and it’s just not worth it. It should have been our 2 skill. All of the other classes can either escape or heal with their 3 skill. Instead, we get an average AOE control with a huge warm-up and cooldown.

Can we switch the 3 skill to slot 2, and get a new 3 skill?
