Generally, if I see someone guesstimating how much of the GW2 playerbase is GW1 players, or how many have carried over, or how many have dropped off since release, I just ignore the number, because there’s no practical source for that as-is that I’m aware of. Lots of anecdotal evidence, sure, but when we’re talking statistics like this, the only thing I want to trust my own experience to do is remind me of all the times real, reliable statistics have gone against my expectations.

Numbers could be lower or higher than presented, so without sources or a clear methodology, it’s really just guessing one way or the other at the big picture.

Edit: For clarity, this was meant to follow right below Flash’s post, which is why I didn’t quote him or have any relation to what Dante is saying. Probably obvious, but it doesn’t hurt to be clear.

as i like to say 98% of all statistics are false

A few tips .

If you get blues or greens you cant use salvage them for luck . This will increase your magic find% making it easier to get better items .

If you rally want to you can always go into Tailoring and Artificer professions to make armor and weapons . All major cities have crafting stations in them and i believe all starter zones do as well .

Also since you’re in queensdale anyway it wouldnt hurt to join the champ zerg to see what you can get from the loot bags there . Oh and do Shadow Behemoth when it spawns too.

Learn to read. I’m making suggestions for constructive feedback. I want them to add raiding, how the hell can that not be put into GW2’s list of stuff to do?

Pretty easily actually . They’ve said they dont want to segregate the community any more than they have to . Raids would do that .

What would that segregate? The people who are skilled and not skilled? Oh wait… that’s a sense of progression. I forgot we don’t want that..?

What you said makes no sense.

anyone whos going to be completely honest about it cant just say ANET sucks for leaving this that and the other out of GW2 that was in GW1 when you’re still here . There has to be a few things in GW2 you like that’s keeping you around . With that said im gonna list the good and the bad in my opinion

The Good

Living Story
They have actually pulled this off pretty well in my opinion although the rewards could use some work

Environment
Now I’m not just talking about terrain here but the music as well and I personally think its been done fantastically. It saddens me to see whats become of some of the old places like ToA but such is life .

Trading Post
THANK YOU!!!!!! Praise Lyssa no more trade spam . Possibly one of the biggest annoyances of GW1 gone

Waypoints and Asuran Gates
Never a bad thing

Uninstanced
It makes the world more alive which is never a bad thing

The Bad

Personal Story
Its kinda forgettable. I could recite whole cut scenes from GW1 off the top of my head they were so memorable and i dont really get that with GW2 . On top of this GW1 had a leg up on GW 2 cause you could go back to any mission at any time so if you just felt like helping a random newbie with Great Northern Wall or Fort Ranik you could maybe making a friend along the way.

Trahearne
Do i even need to say anything ?

80 is too darned high

I dont know about others but i usually burn out on leveling a character between levels 50-60 so i feel that 60 perhaps should have been the max.

Too few utilities

I get that it would have made balancing a little harder but come on throw a dog a bone here . With as many skills as as we had in GW1 we should have had a few more choices of utility skills than we’ve got .

Im gonna end on this note . Having played GW1 for 7 years i saw its good points and its bad points ( build diversity my centaur it was all PvX wiki) and quite frankly im gonna give GW2 a fair shake . As GW1 players we have to remember that GW2 takes place 200 some years later than that of prophesies and the world and lore is going to change a lot in that time frame. (and was doing so at the end of prophesies when the volcano was about to erupt at the end of Hell’s Precipice ) Instead of saying they’ve abandoned us and strictly looking through the nostalgia goggles weigh the pros and cons of the things in the game as a whole .

Adine.2184

I’m impressed with how helpful everyone has been! Thank you all for your advice so far. I think I will be getting the game for my wife soon.

I wanted to ask how one goes about joining a dungeon or pvp. Do you just sign up for it and get teleported there, or do you have to hoof it old-school?

To do a dungeon you need a party of 5 and all be in the same zone as the dungeon . You may have seen door icons on certain maps , these are where the portals to dungeons are . At first you will only be able to do story mode for a dungeon but once that’s complete you will be able to do the explorable version which has several paths . Explorable paths will also give you tokens which you can turn in for armors or weapons for that particular dungeon which you can preview in Lions Arch.

Mesmer . Everyone wants them in a party for PvE and WvW so you cant really go wrong there . I really dont see whats wrong with the whole purple thing either. Look at it like this in roman times purple was more a symbol of wealth than anything else so Mesmers are the upper crust of society

Adine.2184

As of right now I believe Anet’s stance on that is a definitive NO MOUNTS.

You’re wrong about that – kitten many are. Anet doesn’t preclude mounts per se. They say IF they implement mounts, they want to do it in such a way that it adds special gameplay features (e.g. combat on mounts). They want to make them unique. However, at the moment they don’t seem to have enough good ideas for that.

Go to 11:20.

EDIT:
Uhm, admins? The word “as” without the quotes, is censored by your forum.

If they do it in this way you would likely move at walking speed or slower like you did in GW1 . In GW 1 the siege devourer moved incredibly slowly as did the sand wurm and you were given a speed buff skill to compensate for a short time .

As far as mounts for speed are concerned i simply dont see a need . Waypoints provide quick travel to other maps and all classes have a speed buff of one sort or another .

Zerg trains in Queensdale

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Adine.2184

Adine.2184

Is this really the advice we want to give in our community?

The Zerg pointed out that he should give a “Hey Troll is up” in map chat before starting the event. That is just common curtsey You know people are looking to do events and it doesn’t inconvenience you at all to just type a short phrase so that people can come join in if they want.

There is no reason for foul language but it sounded like you were just being rude OP. Perhaps you didn’t know, or realize that people were actively farming the Champs but once someone told you a simple “Oh sorry guys I didn’t realize” would have been much better than the trolling tactics people are encouraging you to do in this thread.

Just realize that in any area there are people looking for events. Spending the 5 seconds to type what even you are starting… Perhaps 10 seconds to link a waypoint is just being kind to your fellow gamers.

Heres the thing . Even if they did call out the event after pulling the runestone they still would have been jumped on for going out of order . Thats just the way the Queensdale zerg is . One misstep accident or not and you get jumped . Quite honestly it would make for a bad starting experience .

Levels in MMOs are meaningless

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Adine.2184

Adine.2184

(Edit: Actually you can get games with no built in progression, a lot of sandbox games are like that with everything accessible from the start. But then the fun usually comes from the player setting their own goals and challenges and you need a whole different game for that to really work.)

Even sandbox games have some form of it . The Sims for instance has skill challenges and collections for each sim that when completed there is some kind of bonus involved with it as well as "lifetime reward points " for achiving wants . Then of course there are the player made challenges like the "legacy challenge " or "100 baby challenge " which have rules and point systems in place . So even the sandbox player needs some sort of goal to keep playing the game

Ok so opening up each area will bring up certain directions for the Living Story to take:

Isles of Janthir – researching Mursaat technology?
Woodland Cascades – more on Centaur and their lore
Far Shiverpeaks – take the fight to Jormag
Bloodlegion Homelands – more on Charr lore
Maguuma & Magus – delving deeper into Sylvari and Pale Tree origin and purpose, possible Mordremoth

Scar of Kralkatorrik – way to Crystal Desert, take the fight to Kralkatorrik possibly or whatever is in the remains he left behind

Crystal Desert – oh man lots of history here; old ruins of ancient civilization, undead, Forgotten? Tomb of Primeval Kings, Ascension, Glint’s doorway, road to Elona…

You forgot Giants . They use to roam the Crystal Desert so one could easily see several giants in a Crystal Desert mapfor GW2 perhaps even with events . You also had the Hydra, Enchanted and various Scarabs to deal with too. Who knows given the shift in the Elon we may see somme foes more native to Elona there too either way i hope its the ext area to open .

As for places not in ruins well lets be honest here most of Ascalon looks better than post searing Ascalon ( bar the whole Charr thing they need a genocide ) which is painful for me to say but true . Yaks Bend and Granite Citadel are still in tact as is a fair amount of Kryta and the Sylvari seem to be doing a good job with the Maguma

Hearts and Personal story are always a good start. Grabbing the skill points and vistas along the way which are marked by blue books and and red triangles respectfully isn’t a bad idea either .
