Let Raine think that coming to NASA forums and using the word “potato” to describe neutron stars is going to work. He doesn’t understand the culture of gaming, and nothing you say is going to help.
Nope. What I already said. We have a trinity, i.e., three classes/roles that work much better than anything else works at high level play. The roles are specifically anchor (quasi-tank), DPS, and util/support. What that works out to in GW2 is guardian, warrior, and mesmer. And, again, if you play the game at a high level, you already know this.
As I explained, a trinity is not any combination of classes that happen to be the most effective.
A trinity is a specific combination, without which you cannot complete content designed for group play.
I don’t know if you’ve ever played any tPvP, top tier WvW, or high-end Fractals, but the trinity is pretty obvious, however team comp is much more variable. You still need your DPS, Anchor and support nevertheless. Please talk to us when you’ve been anything but casual.
Thanks!
This is actually true. GW2 has a trinity: guardian, warrior, mesmer.
GW2 has no trinity. Trinity means that certain class is required in any party to complete some content, otherwise you fail the content.
The fact that everybody and his grandmother uses a guardian, warrior or mesmer doesn’t make any of them a trinity.
Wrong. Having a trinity means simply that you have a trinity. Simple. And, we do. As was mentioned, if you play the game at a high level, you already know this.
No, a trinity is specifically a class A that you can’t play without for reason A, class B that you can’t play without for reason B, and class C that you can’t play without for reason C.
One class being a tank that has to pull aggro, because the other classes can’t take any damage. Second class being a healer, because other classes can’t heal themselves. Third class being DPS because other classes can’t DPS while they hold aggro and heal.
It’s called trinity because there are three of those exclusive roles in traditional MMOs. GW2 has no such exclusive roles, everyone can do everything himself, withou reqquiring any specific combination of classes.
I don’t know if you’ve ever played any tPvP, top tier WvW, or high-end Fractals, but the trinity is pretty obvious, however team comp is much more variable. You still need your DPS, Anchor and support nevertheless. Please talk to us when you’ve been anything but casual.

Guilds have temporary MF boosts.
Did you eat any MF food?
It’s fine to rush a low-level through a high-level zone.
See terms of use here.
What I understood from this topic: monkeys can count to 64, and dead three legged dogs run very slowly.
stuff
That’s not how it works. The wiki clearly explains that MF doesn’t make individual items drop like you describe.
I have added every Anet employee I see to my friends list. When I get 5 chests, I email them to them on a rotating schedule.
This is a amusing idea…
I wonder what would happen if every player starts sending there rubbish drops to Anet employee’s…might improve the loot tables somewhat…
They will make a spam filter that will block such mails.
The fact that nobody cared is not very nice.
On the missions themselves, you need to be aware of the fact that you can and will fail them sometimes.
In puzzles this is even more obvious, because you have a time limit on getting 100 people to jump perfectly through obstacles at the same time. That means that the guild has to pay attention to people that can’t keep up, and use mesmer portals to help. Furthermore, the puzzles lock you in previous rooms if you are late, so the guild has to pay attention to stragglers, and avoid moving forward until everyone is ready. And it all has to be done within the time limit.
The fact is, your guild probably wasn’t very good at coordinating that kind of content.
Why are you directing it to Johnathan Sharp? Is he a lead designer? Because none of this diatribe is in his power.
Speaking of diatribe, why no tldr?
Game Design Lead. Some people do their homework before posting.
I’m not sure if that means what you think that means.
Why are you directing it to Johnathan Sharp? Is he a lead designer? Because none of this diatribe is in his power.

I think the most interesting solution to this continuing problem (it will never go away) is to implement a PvP solution to the problem. What you are describing is espionage executed by a spy. There simply needs to be a way to declare a player a spy (it would need a little thought) and, voila, you have a solution: you are now free to execute him. You could give the spy debuff a 2 hour cooldown, nah, make that 8 hours where he shows up as an enemy. Problem solved.
Seen it in other games, too abusable.
While playing the Super Adventure Box again, I entered a corner in the woods that had a completely different ambiance – it was darker and it seemed to completely block any sounds.
Orr could borrow this effect to malke the place scarier. Other tricks from horror movies and psychological thrillers could be used as well.
Make Orr less of a place where too many mobs are scattered evenly all over it, and more of a spookier wasteland that cuts you off from any help and where you can underestimate the danger until you are hopelessly trapped.
Feeling sad about it is not overreacting. It’s perfectly fine to want things you can’t have.
Coming on the forums and demanding those things, and talking about slaps in the face and making topics like this one is overreacting, because luxury item.\
edit: ok the OP was just asking a question, but you get the point.
So I can feel sad about it, I just can’t write about it?
Come on. The guy above leaving the game, then you can talk about overreaction. I just voice my concern that I don’t think the whole scenario with the minipet makes sense, and that they should actually make it available somehow. If I’m entitled for doing so, then so be it.
If after two pages you still don’t see the difference between “I wish I could get that mini /sadface” and “ermagerd it’s a slap in the face they should give us the option to get the mini!!!111”, I think I’m wasting my time here.
Anti, why hammer for sPVP? ’cause of the knockback?
Yes, and that ring thingy. Seeing how most of sPvP involves keeping the enemy out of a control point, those qualities are very useful.
Please for the love of Dwayna, don’t start property tax analogies
because katanas are nothing else, than just swords, that have been crafted in a special way by the blacksmiths to make their blades stronger…
They are actually crafted in a way that requires using them properly to take advantage of their cutting ability. A katana used like a regular sword is like a broken pencil (pointless).
You can sell even blues on TP, because with the essences they sell for quite a lot.
In any case, I will sum it up very quickly. The very core reason for people to need ascended items is… ASPIRATION.
You mean want, not need.
Yes want, but the way its setup now, its easier to move on to other games than force yourself through what some call a “grind” and “not fun at all” than to do it, add multiple Alternate characters into the mix and many are leaving.
Why wouldn’t you? after the last patch, the fun has been drained away…
It’s easier to start an entire new game than to simply get exotics that are almost as effective as ascended?
I highly doubt that.
Bring in more talents. More manpower means more content, faster.
Not necessarily. More people may mean more management and red tape, reducing the effectiveness of the team.
In programming, more bodies does not always make the job better.
In PvE, I run a Greatsword/Scepter+Shield. A friend of mine uses Greatsword with either Hammer or Staff with great results.
In sPvP the typical guardian builds use a Hammer with a variety of other weapons.
In WvW it depends on whether you want to run as a part of a group, or a more solo-oriented build. A group build is again typically a meditation build with a Greatsword/Hammer/Scepter+Shield. A solo build involves consecrations with a scepter+torch and a one-handed sword, perfect for chasing down a single enemy.
Questing in this game is done by coming near a quest area, as opposed to clicking on NPCs and accepting a quest from them.
Quest areas are indicated by hearts on the minimap, and by orange circles of what we call dynamic events
Don’t worry about gold making, just upgrade your gear every 5-10 levels or so. You’ll get plenty of gold and other currency when you level.
The damage is done for me, I honestly don’t trust them one bit right now, that they won’t repeat the same thing again with a future collectible miniature.
I’m sure they will repeat the same thing with a future miniature or another item.
There are plenty of in-game exclusive items that you also can’t get if you miss an event, and there will also be more of those.
In any case, I will sum it up very quickly. The very core reason for people to need ascended items is… ASPIRATION.
You mean want, not need.
When the want is the very basic nature of humanity, it’s not a want. It’s an instinctual desire. A need. A desire to reach the best one’s potential allows them. The want may be Ascended gear, but that want is the conduit for a need to be at the top of the chain. Even trolls don’t settle for mediocrity, no, they try their very best to annoy people.
It’s exactly like, “I want to breathe because I need to live”. You can always stop breathing. But everyone knows that that’s just talk. Noones going to actually do that.
Wanting an ascended item that in no way is required to play the game is not a very basic nature of humanity.
Wanting the best thing available and the next top tier thing is a very basic nature of humanity. What do you think WoW capitalises off? Do you think they would keep making tier 13, 14, 15, 16, ______ if it didn’t work? Is WoW better? Maybe, maybe not. But please, the concept they’re using seems to work, and has been for about a decade now. That’s a testimony in itself.
Breathing is not on the same level of human needs with things like ascended items (see Maslow’s hierarchy of needs).
Furthermore, you are able to acquire ascended items in a reasonable time, while you don’t need to have them right now. Exotics work almost as good as ascended, and are easily obtained to satisfy your desire for playing the game without handicaps and without being unable to easily complete any challenge because of a lack of ascended items.
It’s a progression system done right.
In any case, I will sum it up very quickly. The very core reason for people to need ascended items is… ASPIRATION.

I quite frankly don’t like players who want a competitive advantage by sinking hours of play time into a game.
Like spending gold on commander tags, siege equipment and upgrading keeps in wvw? Because all that comes from sinking hours of play time into the game.
Personal gear is just another resource that you get over time. It’s all fine, because the opposing server also uses upleveled people without top gear in its borderlands.
Oh yeah, what did the Oakheart do to you?
I’m pretty sure they actually expected people to play the game to get karma instead of relying on their daily and monthly jugs and karma boosters to more than double the amount of karma you could get from them.
Doing daily and monthly counts as playing the game. And its a lot more of playing the game than farming event chain of choice nonstop which people did before them.
And boosters were useless before, introduction of jugs “fixed” them to something people might actually buy to use and not something that gathes dust in inventory.
No doing daily and monthly counts as something you do while playing the game.
Daily and monthly were put into the game to reward players that don’t grind in one spot for gold or karma.
It all makes sense now.
I’ve missed several months worth of dailies.
I don’t miss them at all.
They should Fate. I think it would be hilarious how much uproar there would be about an event only legendary.
No thanks. I’d rather listen to Vogon poetry than the resulting complaining.
I think it’d be better if anyone who is missing only this one from their collection, and wants it very badly, would just leave the game. Maybe anet will get the hint people don’t like the system. Or you just save a lot of money.
It’s still a win win situation.
Why would anyone leave because of the mini? That’s absurd.
It would be better if everyone would realize that the best thing in life, and the most underappreciated and taken for granted is… toilet paper.
It’s not a “big grind”. This is silly. Two of my guildies have an ascended weapon already. You really call that a big grind?
You can talk in circles as much as you like, but really, this isn’t the mountain people are making it out to be. It’s more like a foothill.
Of course it’s not a considered a big grind to you or your guild mates, because farmers such as yourself and your two guild mates enjoy farming.
LMFAO! I’m like about as antifarming as you can get. Try again.
Are you sure 100% sure you and your two legendaries (and another one coming?) agree with what you’re saying?
You love to farm. Love it. Love, love, love it, and your two legendaries agree with me.
So you are correct, it isn’t a big grind for you.Your argument of two players (out of how many players in this game?) having ascended weapons is not proof it isn’t a “big grind”. It’s just proof they are good farmers (or is it bad farmers because they’ve beaten the expected 2 weeks so anet will increase the grind for the next ascended gear?).
You can get legendaries without farming, by just playing the game. It simply takes longer than farming 24/7. Vayne has been playing since like beta?
Now imagine what would happen if the legendaries were even easier to get. Everyone and his grandmother would have 5.
So what I get from AntiGw and Ashen is
-If I feel sad in any way that I can’t complete my mini collection anymore, then I’m overreacting.
-If I feel like the minipet should be obtainable, if nothing else then expensively through gemstore, then I’m entitled and my expectations are unreasionable.Well, it sure aint easy not being entirely satisfied. Am I allowed any kind of feelings toward this minipet or would that be an overreaction?
But at least AntiGw got one thing right. It IS a luxury item and it DOES need to be treated like it. So where do I put my gems?
Feeling sad about it is not overreacting. It’s perfectly fine to want things you can’t have.
Coming on the forums and demanding those things, and talking about slaps in the face and making topics like this one is overreacting, because luxury item.\
edit: ok the OP was just asking a question, but you get the point.
What realistically CAN I work toward?
Do you actually enjoy role-playing games?
This game is a variation of a typical rpg concept, which you play to experience a world through the use of an avatar. You travel through the world and face challenges, and sometimes obtain rare loot.
You don’t play this type of game to “make a legendary”. You can open Photoshop, and make a legendary in there without any delay.
So once again, do you like the experience of controlling a character in a virtual world such as this one?
Dinosaurs needed what, 30 seconds, just to realize their tail has been already bitten off?
Was there some sort of clinical trials for this?
Not really, but there are theories based on the transmission speed of nerve impulses and articles like this one
Yes, I have a gambling problem, but its not about that. Just wanted to let people know that after 3150 greatswords I got ZERO precursors.
Now, the last 100 is a different story, got Dawn about halfway through, and then got another Dawn within the next few tries.
Just wanted to say that i’m lucky, and that RNG is RNG.
The last 100 are no different story than the first 5, because statistically it doesn’t matter how many you have done.
If they are half as obnoxious as Evon, I’m not gonna play them :/
Why doesn’t the big huge heavy dragon just start rolling around on the ground, thereby crushing anything and everything around it that hasn’t emulated brave, brave Sir Robin and bravely run away?
When you are a big huge heavy dragon, falling on the ground is gonna hurt.
Nevermind that he probably isn’t aware of the damage he’s getting until it’s too late. Dinosaurs needed what, 30 seconds, just to realize their tail has been already bitten off?
I have a role. I am the hero. When everything goes wrong I will be there to finish it up.
You obviously haven’t been paying attention to the storylines.
You are nothing but a flunky, easily replaceable. Especially at the end where they could’ve just gotten some random guard off the streets of Divinity’s Reach to man a cannon…
Seriously, most of the time you’re just there to run errands for Trehearne and a whiny clique straight out of a high school soap opera (Divinity’s Edge).
No! I’m a Slayer!
And I got a ride on the awesomeship, and the random guards got squat.
Trinity is good. Removing it can be good, but it also produces this guardian-warrior-mesmer problem.
Trinity is bad.
Guardian-warrior-mesmer problem is produced by horrible AI and boss mechanics.
Queensdale events, wvw.
You think it’s reasonable to delete all your characters just so you can play with your real life friends? The simple fact that you have to ignore an entire game type with your friends if you’re on the wrong server is alone enough of a reason to criticise the situation, especially given the crappy options to solve that situation.
I don’t understand why anyone is defending ArenaNet here. People are aware of the guest option, they are aware of the ability to throw 80g down the drain, many are even aware of wiping your entire account to transfer (a hilariously bad option) and they are aware of the ability to drop half the price of the game to transfer, they still find these options unreasonable. You’re free to disagree but that won’t change the reality that this situation is unworkable for a lot of current and returning players.
You’re on the wrong server because you didn’t transfer when transfers were available. You have nobody but yourself to blame.
Deleting all characters is not there so you can transfer, it’s to let new players pick their first server for free. You should be grateful that it’s also an option for older players who don’t deserve a free transfer anymore.
The fact is that you can play on any server through guesting. You only need to transfer to wvw. And if it’s just one friend, the rest of the friends could contribute a part of the gold required for the gems if they really want to play on that server.
Yes, that is all reasonable.
Greed. Pure and simple.
ESPECIALLY since it’s 1800 ($22.50)/1000 ($12.50)/500 ($6.25), forcing you to buy amounts of gems that they don’t actually sell (they only sell in batches of 800 ($10.00), 1600 ($20.00), 2800 ($35.00), 4000 ($50.00), and 8000 ($100.00) and only actually involves changing one or two values (home World and, sometimes, the World you’re guesting on) in the player’s profile and, assuming character data’s actually kept on the Worlds’ servers and not just on the central server used for logins and such, performing a data copy to the new World – tasks which would be trivial to automate (give me access to the code and I could do it in under 10 minutes, I bet).
Greed!?!
More like balance. Server hopping should be a no-no in WvWvW.
I prefer people hop servers over dead wvw servers
Hopping servers has turned out to be worse than dead wvw servers.
At least now you can choose between competitive zerg-servers and a more strategically oriented low-tier servers. The stable wvw environment is much better, compared to the bandwagony hopapalooza.
“Publicity is the deliberate attempt to manage the public’s perception of a subject” – Wiki
I don’t see how an exclusive minipet would get them publicity in any way. I don’t see anything they could have gained from an exclusive minipet besides allowing people to make a profit (eBay) and taking a dump on their collectors.
It gives people another incentive to visit the con, whether it’s organized by Arena.net or a third party. Next time a con happens, people are more likely to attend.
Cosmetic or not, letting every player see an empty spot for a minipet that can’t be obtained is just a slap in the face everytime you open your collectible tab.
It’s not a slap in the face, you need to stop overreacting. Teach yourself that you can’t have everything you want, if your parents haven’t.
Whatever, that makes no difference.
It makes all the difference. You are making empty arguments with fictional scenarios about Anet actually getting something from handing out the minis.
I get it. They wanted to give something nice to those visiting their team. Didn’t have to be exclusive. In anyway. They could even just have handed them out there as a preview, and released the minipet later. Obviously still hoping its the case.
They did get something from handing out the minis. It may have not been money, but it has been something they thought was worth it. Like publicity.
It didn’t have to be exclusive, but it didn’t have to be non-exclusive either. There is nothing wrong with exclusive cosmetic items. They are cosmetic.
