Even so, if it worked for the one character that has the buff, it won’t make any difference. Everyone would buy it for themselves. I know I would, and I hate the commander tags and have no intention of leading anyone anywhere.

Also, in PvP, or WvW, this effect would be devastating in the hands of a knowledgeable, and small, group.

And if it stacked?

The forums would ignite with flames.

I like your idea, but I’m afraid I must reject it. Given that people don’t earn commander status, all this would do is become a glorified buff everyone would buy.

Commander status, while iffy already, would mean nothing because everyone and anyone who could afford it, would buy it to increase their power, speed, etc. on themselves.

It would become nothing more than self buff-botting.

I think people are merely voicing their first impressions is all. Whether this is negative or positive will be moot when the expansion comes out.

And then you will read some truly negative posts because someone will be disappointed regardless.

While I believe there will be only one specialization and no new weapons, I must agree with Arewn. Take what they say in interviews with a grain of salt. Lord knows, they didn’t stick to a lot of those previous statements. At all. Misleading or otherwise.

Sell everything you find, that you can’t use. Upgrade equipment, with a specific trait you desire, as you level. Do all the heart quests and don’t leave a zone until you’ve mapped everything.

Repeat this for all the low-level areas.

Truth be told, you’re right. But what can you do? They want to keep and bring back those more in favor of a traditional route in MMOs. Namely, expansion, expansion, expansion.

Again, I more than enjoyed getting content for free every few months or weeks while buying niche items through the gem store. I know that reads strange to rather get the content updates for free as opposed to buying them, but that may be just me.

If the druid allows me to make my pet even more powerful, I’m all for it. If it’s some jungle gimmick where you cast ‘spells’ or some other nonsense, forget it.

I don’t remember Anet saying they will never make a paid expansion. For two years they offered tons of free content that was fun and engaging, and for that my hat goes off to them. I also do not begrudge them making some money on an expansion. I think they have more than earned it.

Just so you know: ArenaNet’s lead content designer Mike Zadorojny recently went on record puncturing that particular balloon, saying that if the team manages these updates correctly, it will “probably never do an expansion and everything will be going into this Living World strategy.”

Yes, they’re throwing the expansion crowd a bone. Don’t get that twisted. There’s a reason the ‘expansion’ looks lackluster and rushed.

I think people forget that our fellow posters are posting their first impressions of the trailer and its content. Yes, it appears small . . . no doubt.

Whether this is true, when we experience it, is another question.

But, from my first impression, I also thought it looked rather lackluster as far as expansion-worthy content.

It’s common and a huge reason why people tend not to PvP period. Don’t know why those players are like that, but it’s not unique to this game either.

That’s not really what happened, I think.

The Living Story pretty much failed. ArenaNet focused a lot on the China release but it was worse than expected. The number of players has been falling, they have made changes to their business model (selling Living World chapters) yet profit has not risen; in other words, the future doesn’t look bright for ArenaNet.

They probably decided to make an expansion simply because they have no idea what to do now. This is nearing a desperate move. And it remains to be seen how well planned and how well implemented the promised features for the expansion will be.

Hans Christian Anderson would have rejected this for a fairytale. I’m sure that the expansion was being worked on before Season 2 even launched.

I don’t know how you can think otherwise, since in six weeks they’re going to be doing a live demo of it.

I think he’s implying that the HoT content was originally planned to be released free through Living World updates, and then only subsequently decided to be bunched up and sold as an expansion.

It could be. We don’t really know.

Wow, so ArenaNet is actually willing to admit that the Living Story was a failure?

They did say a while ago that if Living Story was a success then they wouldn’t have to come up with a traditional expansion. So yes it basically means they think that their creation was a failure.

At least in Living Story is was like watching your favorite TV series every sunday or Saturday for 30 mins. Now when you buy the expansion you will blow through everything .

Not technically true. They’re continuing the Living Story Season 3 with the expansion. Their reasoning is, according to Colin, that the demand for an expansion was so great, they couldn’t ignore it any longer. So, to make everyone happy, they’re giving us the expansion and Living Story at the same time.

I’m not wild about the expansion either, but I do see ANet’s reasoning behind it.

It’s more or less a situation of supply and demand. There is a huge demand for an expansion, so now ANet is supplying it.

It’s not a reflection, as far as I can tell, on the success or failure of Living Story. In fact, if you want to be technical, it shows it’s a success since they promoted the expansion through the Living Story. And the expansion continues the Living Story with Season 3.

Sounds like a success to me.

I agree. Seems silly to me to demand to pay for something you got for free, granted in smaller doses, but wasn’t my call.

But, again, time will tell if this will be a boom or a bust.

Until the expansion, nothing as far as Living Story updates. Colin did say, on a YouTube video interview, they were going to combine the expansion camp’s wants with the Living Story camp’s wants. So, after the expansion’s release, we will continue to get more Living Story.

Now the caveat . . . take that with a grain of suspicion. Until we see it happen, I wouldn’t believe anything any developer says at face value anymore. When you see it in practice, and added into the game, you can believe it then. Otherwise, all evidence is subject to change.

Now THAT is unique. THAT provides a lot of content. In between expansions, we get living story. We are getting living story, AND expansions, and there is still discontent within the community? Both sides get everything they wanted and more and there are people who still aren’t happy? I really don’t understand this.

If they go this route, I’ll be more than happy. It appears ANet is trying to satisfy both camps. If they’re successful, more power to them. And us.

We don’t even know what most classes will have as far as specialization yet. Templates, at this point in time, is putting the proverbial cart before the horse.

I’m a little concerned about this too given the continuous attempts to ‘balance’ the various classes. Honestly, anyone who doesn’t expect certain issues to be overpowered at launch, and then get nerfed to the ground later, hasn’t had much experience playing MMOs.

As far as abilities being limited in game play, we don’t know. But I see where you’re coming from. Woodenpotatoes has told us certain traits will get nixed if we specialize.

Don’t know how accurate that is, but he’s been on the ball so far. Only when we have hands-on experience will we know for sure.

But, on the ranger forefront, I’m not keen about seeing tons and tons of druids either.

Indirectly, they would be if they needed to buy the expansion to unlock Living Story, Season 1 content again.

No, if you haven’t spoken to Grawnk yet, and completed his ‘quest’ in your home instant, it’s too late. If you’ve done that portion, you can still get the ornaments through various chests and like throughout the world.

So far, other than the new class, we’ve seen everything this ‘expansion’ gives in patches and updates in some way, shape, or form.

I know that’s not a popular thing to say, right now, but when ‘specialization’ is one route and other ‘specializations’ will be added, patched, later . . . I can see the writing on the wall.

Can’t blame ArenaNet. Package it as an expansion, people celebrate, and give the company more money for something they could’ve gotten for free.

It might not be entirely fair but, again so far, it’s entirely accurate.

I get the feeling people are finally seeing the ‘expansion’ for what it is: a big, Living Story update you’re going to pay for.
