Are boss timers ruining the game?

in Suggestions

Conner.4702

I agree the timers do more damage than good to the game. Sadly people prefer this no challenge lots of rewards situation. World bosses are not challenging and some are just plain annoying. Priestess of Lyssa and Fire Shaman come to mind. Neither are particularly fun in my opinion. Just huge damage sponges or in Fire Shaman’s case the same thing 3 times.

Look at Southsun for a good example as to why people want easy content. After the previous Living Story ended people stopped going there. The Karka Queen hasn’t been done for 240 hours on my server. Simply because it is to much work and the Karka are to challenging compared to the rest of the games content.

More and more do I see people hopping from boss to boss without bothering to do other things in the area. The amount of times I have unblocked pre-events is mind boggling. All because people are not doing the content around it. When I see a timer far in the minus I just jump to that area and unblock it if I know which events are doing it. I for one would love to know which event blocks The Shatterer. Only after I cleared it and sometimes after I did the first pre-event do people come running. Most of them just stand there at the boss spawn area waiting for others to do the pre-events. This might be just my server, but somehow I doubt it.

I’m a supporter of getting people out in the open world, the timers are not the way to do it. People need to want to be in an area for longer periods than just 4-5 minutes in most cases. 15-30 minutes for events like Claw and Lyssa. Long term achievements would be perfect for this and it would actually be horizontal progression. Any kind of reward can be tied to it to be honest.

I would also say completely redesign world bosses to actually make them a threat. No more of this autocast 1 afk situation. I’ve made whole dinners while afk at boss events.
Lastly of course I have always advocated random timers.

It’s a bit over sensitive and will nuke words that are not considered profanity.

For example acts o f (kindness) without ( ) = acts okittendness.

Because the filter is able to read those letters in sequence: F(ef)-K(kay)-I(eye)-N(inn)

See it?

That’s not the filter being overly sensitive, so much as it is that short term phrases for the whole words themselves are set to filter to avoid being nasty towards one another.

There are such ways to express one’s hate and dislike towards something without swearing up and down like a drunken sailor. I’ve learned that as I try to ween myself off the devil’s tongue that all too often curses my mouth. A person could mean the same of saying “She is such a horrible person” instead of the very crude “She’s a <insert noun curse word here>”. Same thing is meant in both, but the former has better context than the latter.

No he’s right. Some word combinations, perfectly normal words, will get censored due to their ending letters and starting letters forming a curse word. Like the example he gave of and kindness becoming okittendness. Same with at and its becoming akittens. It has nothing to do with people trying to circumvent the filter.

Fireworks Thread - Overflow and Achievement issues

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Conner.4702

Conner.4702

The event itself is tied to the ingame time and will happen at dawn (ingame). So your fireworks might not have happened yet, as it is not dawn ingame.

Why dawn? I guess most people would expect a firework to happen at dusk.

It makes total sense to me that the fireworks take place at dawn.

This way, when you’re adventuring anywhere in Tyria, and night falls, you know that you have 35 minutes to get your kitten to LA.

If the fireworks happened at dusk, there would be a 70 minute daytime window to cover.

This way it is much easier to time, without having to sit in LA for over an hour.

I think that was pretty thoughtful of the devs.

And this is what we call trying to justify bad design.

The fireworks should simply have been on a continuous loop and to get the achievement you need to be there for a full round start to finish.

Canach dungeon is truly a terrible experience

I hope you are checking the icon above the mine after sweeping for them with skill 1. The only time I had trouble making them green was when Canach was re-arming them. Otherwise it never gave me any trouble. Re-arming turns the mines yellow and they will be unable to be made friendly for a few seconds after that.

Conner.4702

The biggest issue is that the mouse over information is basically wrong. You do not disarm the mines, you turn them from hostile to friendly. To be honest it would have been better if you would have needed to explode the bombs manually to damage Canach in my opinion.

To do it fast stay at the start of the boss room. there are 2 exploding mines there, alternate between those 2 to damage the boss. Turn one green and place yourself so the mine is between yourself and Canach to make him run over it. Do this until he’s dead. Don’t stand to far away from the mines or he might run around them.

This is why exploits ruin the game...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Conner.4702

Conner.4702

If only people would ensure they can do it without exploits.

When you are doing Cliffside at level 48 you really don’t want to hear people say “I have never done this properly”. And then proceed to wipe multiple times.

This.

And here’s the catch 22: to get good at a fight, sometimes players need to wipe multiple times until they get it right.

But you do not do that at the given example of fractals 48.

So many people were never taught how to do certain content without exploiting that when forced for whatever reason they simply can’t. That’s my biggest issue with exploiting. Exploiters effectively lower the average skill level of the community. Practise makes perfect, but practise also keeps your skill level at — its peak.

What is a "Raid"?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Conner.4702

Conner.4702

What is implied when someone says “I want raids” is “I want one more WoW clone, with content made to a small minority of players who want to join a 40 people instance with tanks and DPS and healers, in which the goal is to defeat a boss to roll under a 0,001% chance that someone in our group will get the piece of loot we are all looking for; we want to get that loot as fast as possible, but of course this kind of content needs to be gated so it’s only available once per week”.

I and many others who want “Raids” in this game have not made such statements. Your depiction of “Raiders” wanting something akin to WoW seems to boil down to your “Hatred” of that game. Which shouldn’t be given as an excuse not to have such content in game. If you want to adhere to your claim about “Raiders” here I would like too see some quotations at least supporting what you’re saying.

So, maybe instead of asserting something too be true about a collective group of people why not simply ask what their position is like the OP? I as a former Guildwars 1 would like to experience the “Raiding/Elite” content similiar to what was set up in Guildwars 1. Which rewarded players who wanted to do “Hard” content with aesthetically pleasing items and a “Good” chance at rare mats and other things of value. This however is not implying that we want a “Gear Treadmill” because I like many others don’t want this for the game. I want to go into further detail with a list of things I would like to see in these “Raids”.

1. Content tailored for “Maximum” difficulty.
2. Larger Groups (Preferably 10-12)Instanced to stop Zerging
3. Aesthetically pleasing equipment (Sellable exclusive skins. Example: Dhuums Scythe)
4. “Rare” Materials/Tokens,Ascended.
5. Guild rewards.
6. Boss mechanics not hindered by “Open” world.

P.S – To answer the OPs questions, “Raids” in layman terms is “Large Grouped” difficult content. And not necessarily the emotional baggage that many ascribe to it.

3, 4 and 5 are the things I don’t want to see in any type of “raid” content if it ever would be added. Of course I’m against any type of content that segregates the community.

DPS meters never measure non dps a player does. AKA ressing, healing, actively dodging so the rest of the team doesn’t have to, See first encounter in TA as example where people can get aggro on all the wurms.

The only people that like these kinds of tools are DPS freaks. Same for inspect. They don’t make for a better community, rather they tear down communities.

The Language Filter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Conner.4702

Honestly I will never understand it. If you disabled the filter and saw the swearword wasn’t that your choice?
Isn’t it the same as opening the strip club and stating that there’s nudity inside, enter at your own risk, a person entering it, complaining to the police that there’s nudity in it and the club being shut down?
When creating a game one should chose to either add a filter and allow people not to see the dirty language of adults, or disallow such language in the rules and allow people to report anyone using such language. Not both. Having both in is useless.

There is nothing adult about swearing. Honestly the adult thing would be to be able to restrain yourself from doing it. Do you constantly swear at your boss. I don’t think so. The filter is an in case of emergency system. People just lack respect and needs these kinds of rules enforced on them to behave some what civil.

The more you try to balance classes, the more they will be shoved into a single build. On top of that if duelling would be implemented the amounts of screams for nerfs to a class would be multiplied by 10.

Almost no MMO is balanced 1vs1 or tries to. The only way to balance GW2 is to remove 7 of the 8 classes. MMO’s are simply not meant to be balanced 1vs1.

Like, I can understand complaining about WvW achievements which are pretty much impossible.

But seriously dude? It’s not that hard if you actually PLAY the game.

Crabtacular is NOT an achievement. You as a player did not achieve anything apart from being lucky if you get it. It all deprnds on if the other players screw up and or if the karka roll the correct way. You can PLAY 24/7 and never get it because the other players are smart enough to not get crushed. It is badly designed and needs to be changed. I got it, but can’t say I felt it being an achievement after getting it.

@killcannon. There is a reason I don’t bother arguing with certain people. They don’t bring anything to the table except be negative about any criticism. We are not going to get most people away from chest events or temp content that offers vastly superior money gain, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored no.

I’d say add a long term achievements per region that promotes doing things in areas other than those situated around the chest events. The more you do in such an area the bigger the gain towards the end goal of the achievement. Link some rewards to them and we are set. A reason for some to venture out into the open world. A similar long term achievement could revolve around minor races, like skritt and dredge.

Sadly Anet is moving away from promoting open world content more and more with the release of things like the event api.

We have seen the end!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Conner.4702

Conner.4702

Those API’s were a terrible idea that will only put more pressure on the open world. With this kind of accurate info people will participate even less in open world events that don’t profit them as much. On top of that certain resources will become more rare as people won’t come near them anymore. Finally these API’s have turned a once living breathing world into nothing but a mechanical machine were everything is precisely known. Instant gratification akittens worst I say.

Even reviewers of mmo's have noticed.

Crab Toss: Forcing PvP for a reward is wrong IMO! [Merged]

Not against games like this, but the way they is completely wrong. It’s a lag/skillag-luckfest. Anyone who comes here and it requires any kind of skill (may it be advanced or monkey level skill) is lieing to himself so much he actually believes it.

In my book that is not a fun way of doing a game. The only person who thinks he is having fun is the guy who won and is blinded by the fact he was extremely lucky in that winning process.

I honestly hope this was just a badly executed experiment and they won’t do it again. U don’t win the admiration of ppl with games like this. U just raise ppl’s frustrations in a game that shouldn’t be frustrating. What’s the point of a game on a long run?

U can take criticism as is…or u can just ignore your fails and come here saying “oh but just don’t play it”. Instead of indirectly blaming stuff on us (considering we indeed wanted to play it), try fixing it…and maybe u will see less bad comments. It’s like me buying a dvd player, and after seeing it has movie-delays while playing, the vendor telling me “u don’t like it, don’t use it”..it’s that dumb.

Remember the general opinion of customers is always right specially when u are desperately dependent on the money of those customers in a F2P game :P just sayin’ (and no i don’t represent the majority, but i am one of those voices that adds up “at the end of the day”).

For those who say “but u didn’t pay anything for it” … my gem transaction store history negates your opinion on this matter.

Long story short, i don’t want to hear “u don’t like, u don’t play” anymore. That is not a business model that will make u’re game any better. It just infuriates and frustrates ppl. Even if it seems impossible, i want to be able to enjoy every part of the product i bought and i am still paying for via gem store without being frustrated each time. On the long run my gem-money is an investment in quality, more then just buying 2-3 skins. It’s my way of “monthly subscribing” to your game.

So much wrong in this post it’s just sad. First off you are comparing the main function of a device to a very very small part of an MMO. Your analogy would work if you compared it to the A-B function of the DVD player instead. A function almost no one uses. Furthermore a vendor does not make DVD players they just sell them. So most they can do is offer a different one.

for the mini game it self it indeed does take skill. Your refusal to admit it does not make it any less needed. It just makes you ignorant of what to do. I lag quite a bit, but can still win due to knowing more than the rest in that match.

It also doesn’t matter how much gems you bought. Honestly that is pure entitlement. You bought items you wanted that’s what you paid for nothing else. The customer is also not always right. Especially in an MMO where everyone has a different opinion.

You don’t want to hear just don’t play it. Well sorry but just don’t play it and stop being an entitled brat about it.

Crabtacular Achievement

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Conner.4702

Conner.4702

The tooltip is actually not correct anymore. The Friday patch changed Crabtacular so it’s much easier to achieve now. Previously, you had to be holding the crab and be alive while every other opponent was dead. This pretty much meant everybody else needed to be steamrolled by Karka, which was next to impossible to achieve if you had someone who was AFK or a halfway decent Crab Toss opponent.

Now, all that needs to happen is you need to be holding the Crab, and you get 3 Eliminations while holding it. If you see the “<X> eliminates the opposition!” message pop up, you’ve just qualified for the Crabtacular achievement. The 3 Eliminations don’t all need to occur at the same time; I’ve gotten 2 Eliminations at once, then a third went down about 4 or 5 seconds later, and gotten the message. In all the situations I’ve gotten the message, there was at least 2 or 3 opponents still alive on the field too.

I’ve gotten that message many times before getting the achievement which I only got this morning. I only really started doing Crab Toss on Saturday to complete all related achievements. The round before I got it I even was top everything, which would be a much better requirement for crabtacular. As it is the achievement is pure frustration.

You ignored the fact that ArenaNet literally sold the game in this manner. Did you buy it before the game was out? Because the forums were in an absolute uprage about the Ascended gear being added. Do you know why? Because it was going against the principles of the game that they used to sell it.

I didn’t ignore that at all. I explained it very carefully. If you read my post, you’ll see that I answered this complaint. They sold the game, and explained this many times over.

In most games there’s one path, one way to get to top level gear and Anet gives many options about how to play. You never have to level WvW if you want. You never have to go into a dungeon if you don’t want. You dont’ have to PVe to play SPvP if you want. This is clearly what Anet meant by play your own way, since in most other games you can’t do this.

On the other hand, what it doesn’t mean is that every single option for everything single thing, with every single reward will be offered to players. That’s not reasonable to expect. Just because you want something to mean something doesn’t mean it does.

Look, I’m not going to go dig up the quote.. (mainly because ANet deleted all of their previously posted blogs). But they literally said that getting the highest-stat gear in the game would never be something that you had to forfeit your way of playing for. This, coupled with them saying that the game was “everything you loved about GW1” was more than enough to sell loads of copies with the idea that there was no gear grind, and that max gear would be very easy to obtain. Which it was, up until Ascended. Which is not even what this thread is about.

You are arguing with a wall. My suggestion don’t bother. Guild missions were just badly implemented due to anet not thinking it properly through. Same as ascended gear. Same as the Living story. Now the living story has been improved with the new instalment, but will it stay this way or fall back again.

DPS meters should be banned from every game. They never look at the big picture.

Let’s give a clear example. In TA on the first boss. My main job towards the end is dodging dodging and dodging, because every single wurm will 99% of the time target me and exclusively me with their spit attack. So for the good of the group I stay away and do almost no dps. Bring in a DPS meter into this and I would be kicked for severely under performing. Even though my actions mean we kill the bloody thing.

We used DPS meters in AoC while raiding. The top DPSers almost never buffed or debuffed and only DPSed so the only reason they got as high as they did was because of the work of others, but they sure liked to gloat.

I’m siding with those that say this patch was useless for the ranger class. None of the areas that trouble rangers have been addressed. Pets are still useless in dungeons as they still die as flies. So any dps increase to pets is pointless without added survivability where it counts and that is dungeons. Spirits… really why would anyone use spirits. They need a complete overhaul and not a hp increase.

Of course, you know more about the game than the people who made it… I bow to your superior knowledge.

The people that make games are often the least knowledgeable when it comes to how well skills work together. I will wait and see what the patch notes say, but if what I heard for rangers is true than I wouldn’t hold my breath when it comes to saying devs know their stuff better.

Fully stealthed by yourself was never possible. At least I never succeeded in getting to the last fountain stealthed. A perfect run would still only just put me past the arena. This was before the nerf to backpack and fiery sword. So now you’d have to be able to do the dark area without seeing to get into the arena stealthed.

But this is just another complain thread of course. OP might just as well have been one of my victims.

What’s it to me? It makes the bow less of an achievement, and less special if other people can go out and buy it for much, much cheaper than it cost to craft it. That’s what it is to me.

Not sure I’m following…how is ANYTHING that can be purchased an “achievement?” Oh right, it’s not (that would include Legendary weapons.)

I’ve made both my Wintersbite and my Frostfang on my own, and did not purchase them. The point I’m trying to make though, is not that Wintersbite shouldn’t be allowed to be sold, but that it shouldn’t drop from the Claw of Jormag event, and cost 150g less than when crafting it.

It only costs 150g less because people put that value on it. If more people wanted it the price wouldn’t have dropped at all. You paid a premium to have it when you wanted it. If you didn’t want it at the “250g level” of price you wouldn’t have gotten it…it was worth that much to you. Just because it got old and now “is on sale” doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t enjoy it.

You got what you wanted out of it, a weapon, and paid a premium for it….now go have fun with your weapon and don’t worry if others are getting a better deal on it than you did.

All you’re showing is buyer’s remorse.

And you are showing you have no clue what you are talking about. Just like the poster above you.

It is not 150 Gold less because people put less value on it. It is 150 Gold less due to them not having to have spend time crafting it, which means they also didn’t spend any money on it. Winterbite costs around 300-400 Gold to craft. You might get 1 or 2 people to undercut the crafting price by a 100 Gold, but not a constant stream unless it started dropping from some chest.

Anet is directly shafting crafters if they continue to make crafted items drop from chests. That is not play how you want at all.

I feel a lot of angst coming from people who want to sell their stuff, but not so much from the people who want to use it or own it. Far as I’m concerned, more stuff should drop from chests, and less should be bought and sold on the tp. More BtA’s please.

And you probably also want people to only be able to make money running Cof1.

Crafting should be a viable way to make money. Honestly crafting should be the backbone of the ingame economy and not random drops as it is now.

I love the retro game. I just wish I loved playing it.

The movement and action keys are backwards (movement on right hand and action on left). I got frustrated at the first bunny boss fight and after not being able to land a single hit, won’t go back. Give me a NES controller and I’d really love it!

The movement is accurate for that type of game on the pc during that period.

The Norn viewpoint and the Asura..

As a Norn, Asura are basically too small to in anyway see what they are wearing. They could be wearing full T3 Asura gear and have a legendary, or they could be wearing a paper bag and carrying a toothpick. Always makes me laugh. I wonder if they know?

Well, according to the female Norn guarding Jora’s statue, she can’t even tell the difference between male asura and female asura.

The Asurans have the same problem with Norns. So don’t worry. They are all knees to them and not very pretty ones.

Is mechanical relevance really the only standard by which you judge the worth of a game feature?

No, but it is part of how I sort whether or not something “matters enough” to get worked up over. If a game feature is broken, but has little to no impact on the gameplay itself? I’d rather only just note “this is broken” and move on. I’d much rather talk about problematic event balancing, or lacking the same level of pet control I had in Guild Wars 1 (“Lock this target for your pet”), or Random Number Generator provided Precursors.

You ignore the fact that non-mechanical things often have far more influence on a game than mechanical things. If leaderboards don’t work properly, it reflects negatively on the entire game. Whether you personally acknowledge that is irrelevant, real world experience shows how the current system is broken.

Just look at the ELO system in chess. It works because ELO score is actually worthless. The higher ranked player does not get a second queen. Imagine the outrage if someone even suggested that in chess … yet in MMOs that’s standard practice.

The current leaderboards are counter-intuitive to all working ranking systems.

Don’t know much about the ELO system, but I presume that like the ATP tennis system, you keep your high score as long as you are playing and winning. If you were to take a break for a few months your score would drop especially if you had a very good run the previous year at that time.

I suggested this before already. Only count the last 3/4 months of dailies/monthlies in the rankings. Anything after that gets cut off. So the list would be in constant flux and people would be able to rise the ranks even though starting later.

Why Do People Exploit?

an exploit is an abuse of a bug.

As we have seen, “bug” is subjective. You think using Mesmer portals in jumping puzzles is a “bug,” and others do not. It’s a complicated issue, not clearly defined, and not all circumstances are created equal or have equal consequences.
And yet, the punishment for all exploits is the same: immediate permanent BAN, without warning. In my mind, issuing the death penalty for all crimes does not make for a wise system.

When portals were being abused in WvW instead of banning a whole bunch of people they changed the way portals can be used. Expect that to happen with PVE content as well. Though expect some people knowingly abusing the bug (exploiting) to also be banned.

No! Jeez, this paragraph was so reasonable, until that last sentence! Expect “some” people to be banned? Which people? Which bugs? You and I can’t even agree on what is and isn’t a bug, in the first place! And yet you think it’s perfectly fine for ArenaNet to ban people permanently and without warning, for breaking rules that were never written.

Let me paint you a picture:

You’re driving down the highway at 60 km/h (kilometers, I’m Canadian), and a cop pulls you over.
You: “Good afternoon, officer. Was I doing something wrong?”
Cop: “Yes. You were driving well above the speed limit.”
You: “Oh? I’m sure I was doing 60. The sign clearly says 60 is the speed limit.”
Cop: “That was clearly a printing error on the sign. The speed limit is 40km/h. You should have known this was an error and matched your speed to the limit you actually knew it was.”
You: “What!? How was I supposed to know? I didn’t make the speed limit sign. This is the government’s error, I’m not at fault for their mistakes!”
Cop: “You should have expected to be caught for this. Doesn’t this highway seem to you like a 40km/h highway? You knew it was wrong. And now your license is revoked, forever.”
You: “Wait, I don’t even get a speeding ticket? Anyone who doesn’t obey an imaginary speed limit just has their license revoked?!”
Cop: “Not everyone. We only nail the worst offenders. You’ve been over the limit for an hour now. You’re not fooling anyone. Now step out of the car, please.”

Using a flawed analogy doesn’t really help your case. Try this one.

You are driving on a road and see a shortcut that will shorten your trip by 10 minutes but that road is blocked off except for a hole just big enough for you to pass. Does that mean you can make use of it? It is there ready for use so from your point of view you would be okay with it.

You said skipping content. I use portal to skip content all the time. Is that an exploit? Yes or no? Or would you like to take back the skipping content part of your definition?

You have never used the skill “portal” to help your team skip content? Actually, you just said skip stuff, which is even more vague.

If the portal gives you access to an area you should not have access to by glitching, than it’s an exploit. If the mesmer on the other hand actually has to go to that area first the normal way than it is not an exploit.

I could give examples, but that would either infract me or close the thread entirely.

Nice rule of thumb there.

Using exploits is just bad for several reasons in my book. Some of them being: it screws over the economy. It makes the general playerbase less skilled as they can cheapening content and never having to learn it properly. Seen it way to often people can’t do the content without exploiting.

@ShiningSquirrel

Some members never comeback or leave for months at a time. An active and lively guild is important for most guilds I’ve been in. Otherwise, you’re just a random group of people.

Read my post again. If you have a guild of 400+ people and don’t even know who they are, they are nothing but a random group of people.
Guilds should be made up of friends or people you like to play with, not random people invited by spamming chat. If you feel you have to delete someone who has not been on for a few months, then they where not your friend, and you really did not know them, so why where they even in the guild in the first place? just to fill a spot?

Forget +1, how can I +1000000 this post???

And I am going to have to -1000000 his post due to the extremely narrowminded viewpoint on what a guild is. Guilds come in many forms, but the most important function they have is forming a community. This can be big or small. Tight knit or not. As such someone who isn’t actively part can be seen as a detriment to that community.
