Verbal Harassment Against Rangers

in PvP

CureForLiving.5360

I have been verbally abused every single day that I’ve been playing that ranger. I never received so much harassment on my warrior, engineer, or mesmer. It’ll happen at least once and up to five times per day that I’m doing spvp. I’ve had to report so many people over the past week. What I find interesting is that it is often coming from players who have the Legendary Champion title.

Elitist acting elitist. Report and Block. Although I’ve never received any abuse for being a ranger on the EU servers though. I have been abused for trying to cap, trying to defend, for ressing, for stomping when outnumbered, being outnumbered etc. you know lately I’ve just been putting my guild chat on and ignoring map and team chat. That tends to work for me.

The problem is when you get a team of genuine people who want to form a solid strategy, but two members don’t respond because they have team chat off. Block all you want, but turning off team chat isn’t always best.

True enough, but I’ve never encountered a team like that, never ever. Granted I only have 600 matches but I think that’s a decent enough sample size. I get 2 types of teams, ones who don’t say anything or those who complain and insult.

build a humongous altar that spans the entire maguuma – cure all of the corrupted creatures at once – may require huge magitech generators built by asura to power (luminates plant style generators) – maybe one for each pillar – if you could tap into the leyline network – that’d be even better – i assume we’d need a tonne of power for something that big http://i6.minus.com/i2IAiqX8sJbf4.jpg

Or it could be fueled with sacrifices, like how the bloodstones were being fueled by the White Mantle. Would make for an interesting moral dilemma. Kill thousands to safe millions?

A Question About Elder Dragons...

in Lore

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

so once an elder dragon is killed, it leaves a power vacuum that can be filled by one of its champions – i suppose the point of having a champion is to have a failsafe in case you die

Which seems to be exactly what occurred, in the case of Tequatl and what Glint herself was trying to do.
My theory is that dragons (both living and undead) are natural magic sponges, that the Elder Dragons were simply normal dragons that lived long enough absorb ridiculous amounts of magic (in some prehistoric age where dinosaurs and dragons reigned).
Although the idea of champions being failsafes implies that there’s something more going on. As far as I know champions are just extremely strong minions who are capable of doing more (and thus why EDs produce them).

A Question About Elder Dragons...

in Lore

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

They go through these hibernation cycles, and awake periodically throughout history when the ley lines produce enough magic to entice them.

Actually the Elder Dragons themselves leak magic while hey hibernate. The ley-lines are conduits of magic but don’t produce it. Magic can’t be created or destroyed.

(Note: The Elder Dragons consume magic and keep it in balance passively, almost by accident, and not intentionally.)

We don’t actually know if the Elder Dragons are natural or unnatural, if they maintain magic by accident or by intention

What sort of effects do you believe killing these Elder Dragons will have on the amount of magical energy that currently flows through the ley lines?

Hard to say, since the Elder Dragons have been maintaining magic. But from what we can tell of the Jotun they (supposedly) had a mighty magical empire which they drove into the ground because of their arrogance. From the story of King Doric we know that when humans had access to plenty of magic they basically went about making war and killing each other.
So if nothing else we know that too much power going around automatically leads to abuse of said power.

It will be really interesting to me, because in future expansions, if ArenaNet keep this mechanic in mind, we could see bits where we have to find ways to deal with the Elder Dragon’s paths of destruction without killing them, as killing them could have even more adverse effects.

Currently that seems to be why we’ve been looking for Glint’s egg, because theoretically we could position Glint’s baby to become the next Elder Dragon. Hopefully then Glint’s baby would be a nice Elder Dragon (although perhaps Elder is the wrong word to use) who can maintain the magic levels and not kill everyone.

Specializations Change Class Fundamentals

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

CureForLiving.5360

Well fundamentals is a interesting word to look at. Technically other classes can also summon pet-like creatures to help them, although what set the ranger apart is that he or she has more control over the pet and has 2 to swap between. So simply changing how the Druid is able to use their pets would change the fundamental difference in that regard. However it’s possibly that Anet perceives what constitutes the fundamentals of a ranger different then you or me, and thus will change what they believe to be the fundamentals.

I just hope there is a story of how they became a class rather than suddenly they popping into the character select screen.

On the contrary, I want them just put on the character select screen. An explanation, such as the mists don’t feel the effects of time, and Rytlock was only the first Revenant in Tyria would be nice.

Ease of use versus narrative. I guess both sides have some merit, I’d like it if we had to unlock the class in game by completing a quest or story element. But if ANet is looking to court new players then they’d probably lower the barrier to entry and make it available on the selection screen.

I love season 2, but I loved season 1 much more. Story should be a text and content should be something interesting to keep you busy for at least 1 day. Those 10 min story dungeons are interesting, but really depressing to know you have to wait 2 weeks for 10 mins of content again.

Yea, I know they are a bit longer than 10 mins.

We did get content to keep us busy for at least 1 day. Namely Dry Top and Silverwastes. Although they weren’t part of the narrative component (or the 10 minute but not 10 minute content as you call it) they were still released as part of the Living Story.

My complaint is the pacing, as it has been with most of the rest of the game. The pacing is off, and the cliffhangers are overused due to the breaks we had going on.

Cliffhangers are a matter of when you play. If I were to play it now there would be no cliffhangers. Valid point if you’re playing it episode by episode however.
Pacing has been a problem, however I think it was more a product of having a more complicated story then they could develop content for i.e. to fully execute the story at a decent pace would have required a lot more development time and so resulted in us having to get a lot of lore and narrative shoved at us somewhat awkwardly (for example very dense dialog).

Lore Contrarians?

1) The Sylvari/Minion thing. It’s to the degree of saying that ArenaNet writers are wrong or lying.

The answer is complicated, but basically has more to do with psychology than ANet or its writers.

where as a community people have a very strong picture of the lore as it should be according to the lore community

Well this is certainly part of the complicated answer.

It’s a case of people being very invested with their interpretations, having spent a lot of time and brainpower working on them. This isn’t a bad thing . . . the inflexibility is, however.

And this builds onto the complexity of the answer. But for the most part it’s this. This is the sort of thing you’ll encounter a lot in life, people who have a set of believes which when question results in cognitive dissonance. To copy past from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance), when people are confronted with contradiction information they will:
*Change behavior or cognition (“I will not eat any more of this doughnut”)
*Justify behavior or cognition by changing the conflicting cognition (“I’m allowed to cheat every once in a while”)
*Justify behavior or cognition by adding new cognitions (“I’ll spend 30 extra minutes at the gym to work this off”)
*Ignore or deny any information that conflicts with existing beliefs (“This doughnut is not high fat”)

We see a lot of the last point.

"They're with the dragon now." So what?

CureForLiving.5360

The part of Sylvari being immune to dragon corruption makes more sense now than ever before. It’s obviously not because they can’t be corrupted. It’s because they already belonged to Mordremoth all along.
Even if most of them have broken free from that corruption, I guess the connection will always be there hidden deep within – creating an immunity system against the other dragons.

Ok I’m going to be very pedantic about the usage of the word corruption here, since by all accounts the natural state of Sylvari is a dragon minion. Since it is their natural state we cannot call it a corrupted state. Their natural state is not equivalent to say the Icebrood, Risen or Branded (who by all accounts are corrupted as they’ve been altered from their natural state into dragon minions). So saying the Sylvari have been corrupted by Mordy is to assume they have a natural state that is not that of a dragon minion. If anything the friendly Sylvari we’ve been seeing in game are the corrupted ones, having been altered from their natural state (Dragon Minions).
In this case the usage of the word ‘corrupted’ implies assumptions regarding the natural and unnatural states of the Sylvari.

It’s possible for a being to have corruption for multiple dragons.

The examples we’ve seen have occurred in an unnatural state. It is possible, but the mechanics that would allow and disallow multiple corruption aren’t known to us. Maybe to be multi-corrupted requires some complicated process, or maybe you just need to throw enough different dragon magic at it. What we do have is examples of multi-corruption, but we also have the example of Sylvari dying when corrupted by Zhaitan. So we at present have two conflicting facts, or maybe not conflicting since we don’t really understand the mechanism of either. Thus leaving this squarely in the debatable category.

The source of that (extra) resistance, as it turned out, was the Pale Tree’s protection through the Dream – protection that if not weakened by rejection of the Dream or near-mortal injury to the Pale Tree, is able to protect even against the dragon that they “belong” to.

As far as I’m aware this is only explicitly stated to relate to Mordy’s corruption. It is assumed that it relates to the corruption of other Elder Dragons, but obvious it’s never explicitly stated leaving some wiggling room. For example we don’t see any Soundless Risen, implying that the dream might not have played as large a role in preventing the Sylvari from being corrupted by Zhaitan.

Why did Scarlet do all this?

in Lore

CureForLiving.5360

kept using Saren from Mass Effect to draw a comparison to Scarlet during the finale of Season 1.

IE
Saren sought salvation, believing the Reapers could not be stopped and so allying was the only way. Yet at the same time he was conducting research for the affects Reapers had on organics, Indoctrination, and trying to find ways to combat it.

But in the end Saren for all his big talk was indoctrinated, he was a puppet. His research on indoctrination was little more than a elaborate ruse to make him think he still had control, to make him think he was still in charge of himself, while slowly all his actions, thoughts and motivation were being twisted to serve the reapers.
I think Scarlet started out wanting to be free, but her search for freedom let her to rejecting the dream, to the machine and into the arms of Mordy. Do I think she thought she was still fighting for freedom? Sure, it’s possibly that Scarlet had some mad idea in her head, but in the end she was a puppet, she did exactly what Mordy wanted.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that madness does not equal logic. In fact the very opposite. Particularly when dealing with psychotic delusions. Scarlet could very well have thought that awakening Mordy would save the world, because she was mad. I think it was best said by Spock – “Jim, madness has no purpose or reason. But it may have a goal.”

What if we attack the dragons when they are asleep and weaker?

That’d be a hell of a long time to wait, my characters wont live that long!

Theoretically (and this is supported by Trahearne attempting to attack Mordy before he fully awoken) we’d have a far far better chance of defeating the Elder Dragon. They’d not yet have a full army (maybe only a couple of champions) and their level of magic would still be low.
Too bad no one has actually knowingly discovered a sleeping Elder Dragon yet.
Also there are way of tricking the Elder Dragon into going to sleep earlier, see the ancient races during the last cycle.

I mean before they awoke, why didn’t Glint gather champions to penetrate Kralkatorrik’s chest with that spear when he was asleep?

Maybe slapping them in the face prematurely wakes them up, on the wrong side of the proverbial bed that is.

Malyck in a new light.

Dunan Atreides.5436:I still think there’s a possibility that Sylvari on the whole aren’t dragon minions.

Which brings up more questions than it answers. If Sylvari are Mordrem then we know Mordy made them. If they’re not then we A) still don’t know where they come from B) what purpose they serve C) why some serve Mordy. I’m going go with occam’s razor on this one, the simplest (but no simpler… although we’re talking about a world where very often the answer: magic or the gods did it… so not particularly ideal for occam’s razor) answer is that Sylvari are Modrem and something happened to free some of them. In the Sylari == Mordrem scenario we only have one big question (why are they free?) instead of three.

Half a gold is not something I’d call cheap, especially when you have to switch everyday to make daily ascended time gated mats.

Huntsman gives you your ascended metal and wood (forgot their names) and your ascended leather. So if you have huntsman you have 3 / 4 of the ascended crafting mats.

Most of season 1 was open world. I’d rather they develop new content than rework old content.

There was a number of story instances though, at the very least making those available in game shouldn’t take too much time. Granted these wouldn’t have achievements or fancy boss fights, but they would at least provide some narrative.

LOL — and they said we have the friendliest community in all of MMO’s.. LOLOLOL

Well in all fairness everyone’s just being (for the most part) honest here. There does come a point in time when you just have to accept the facts and the facts aren’t always nice. This is clearly a L2P issue, there’s no getting around it. The fight introduced no new mechanics, nor did it require any specific gear, trait or skills to complete. The audio cues were very clear and detailed. I’m sorry but that’s the truth, OPs experience isn’t the norm. Maybe OP hasn’t played the other episodes perhaps? Perhaps OP is new to GW2? I guess there’s a number of explanation but it all comes down to L2P.

Learn to play? That’s what you have to say? No sympathy for the person who has no time to invest in learning how to tweak their build to squeeze every ounce of damage output balanced with damage mitigation.

Yes but you don’t need to do any of those things for the final fight. In this case L2P isn’t an elitist dismissal. All that is required is a basic recognition of mechanics and then to follow the rather clear instruction provided. The only thing that wasn’t made clear was to kill the adds before they killed the fire, and honestly that wasn’t too difficult to figure out either.
Depending on when exactly OP undertook the fight, a simple google search could have saved him hours.

I think it’s not meant to be taken literal there. The HoT site talks about maps plural.

Either Anet needs new PR, or Colin just likes playing with my emotions…

Or they never assumed that the player base would literally interpret every single letter. A silly assumption to be honest, would have though they knew us better than that.

After the whole only one specialization thing, they’re making me really nervous. I’d like to think its one massive map, but they’ve got me second guessing them.

I know right! Why even call it a specialization if it’s going to be the only progression? Either specialize or not. It’s technically a choice but not a good one. That’s like going out to diner and being offered a raw t-bone or no t-bone or all. What if I like my t-bone well done or medium-rare? CureForLiving.5360

There was 1 mursaat left…as far as the White Mantle, asura, and Krytan humans knew. It was never confirmed that there weren’t more of them hanging out in their main city, not involved in Krytan-charr politics.

Also attached pic is a mursaat symbol

Did we ever see girl Mursaats? Maybe Mursaat are all asexual and lazarus single handed repopulated his species over the last 250 years. Or he just used some magic and magic-ed more Mursaat into existence.

Mursaat made construct servants, like Jade Constructs. Maybe those Mursaat-like energy bodies are constructs too, unknown till now. That or a big redesign. Eitherway Mursaat type.

Maybe Lazarus reconstructed artificial bodies, and magically put the souls of dead Mursaat in them. So that’s why they look like Mursaat, but also like constructs.

Conclusion, trust Mursaat, except that one that swore vengeance on humanity of course. Unless you are Asura of course in which case all is well, let those stupid bookah deal with bookah problems.

Or charr, or Sylvari (although they’ve got their own problems), or Norn, or Hylek, or Quaggan, or centaur. Actually there’s a lot of folks who really have no beef with the Mursaat.

So, it’s all Scarlet’s fault?

What a silly question! Everything is Scarlet’s fault!

and the last fight made it pretty clear, with the pact wiped we’re going to need the intel and help. Trahearne had 20 years to study Zhaitan, there’s not time for that with Mordy.

Debatable. Elder Dragons never start with a total onslaught, they awaken (do a lot of damage) and then slowly expand their base of power. Mordy was a bit odd, but theoretically after he awoke there could be a number of years before he becomes a threat on the scale of Zhaitan. The rush was to catch him before he awoke.

Just don’t pretend they’re anything but terribly dark, selfish beings.

Maybe metaphorically, but they seem pretty luminescent to me. And anyway if we discriminated against selfish backstabber we’d have no Asura.

Well, really guys, the gift of prophecy is usually traditionally shown as an unwilling gift. From Cassandra to Jonah to the Pythia, the visions in the story aren’t something they can control, they just come.

Do we even know if Glint had the power of prophecy? I know that she was telepathic, and she used her telepathy while she was a minion of Kralky to predict and prevent attacks against her master, but could she see the future or could she simple predict and manipulate events to her own choosing?

Do players that just bought an MMO not have to pay for all the additional content they developers added over time? I know if someone just bought WoW today they would have to buy all the added expansions to get to play the full game. The same logic applies to this.

The problem is that because the terminology is different the conception and understanding is also different. That is, because LS Season 2 wasn’t packaged together into a boxed release and not called an expansion people won’t intellectually be able to liken S2 to a WoW boxed expansion. Granted S2 is probably closer to DLC.

Ha more evidence that the Sylvari are heartless monsters! :P

S2 SPOILERS below, just in case.

Don’t look, Ethel!

If sylvari don’t have hearts, what vital organ did Caithe stab to kill Wynne so quickly?

Some vital part which functions either as a heart or with similar “reliance” from the body’s workings.

then mordrem heart could just be a term given to mordrem “parts” that function like a heart.

Most likely. We’re dealing with plant monsters that are unlike your usual every day plant so mammalian terminology to refer to plant creatures parts seems possible. After all Sylvari have skin, muscle and hair, even though they technically don’t.

"They're with the dragon now." So what?

Unless you plan to tie them all up and ship them to Arah, there’s no real and easy cure for dragon corruption yet. Once they are corrupted, they are servants to the dragon now, and their only job is to further the dragon’s goal. That usually means trying to kill you, your loved ones, and destroying life as you know it for the glory of Mordremoth.

Pretty sure shipping Sylvari to Arah to cure this so called dragon corruption would be a wasted effort. If Sylvari are corrupted then it was by Ventari! They are dragon minions, but not something that was corrupted into a dragon minion.

Mordrem wolves are creations.

Mordrem Wolves have visible skeletons, so they’re more than likely corrupted and not created.

The difference here, I think, is that we now know that a cure is possible, whereas for the entirety of the personal story, while we were cutting risen down in droves, it was believed there wasn’t one. That new information alters the moral equation, imo.

Curing them from what? There natural state? Both the chicken (definitely) and Glint (possibly) were at one point un-corrupted and turned into dragon minions. The Sylvari were always Mordrem as far as we know.

Umm Typo Much??

How about a New Loot system?

Games like Diablo and WoW has “Smart” Loot system that allows players to use items and equipment best for their gameplay.

Mind elaborating? I haven’t played Diablo 3, although from what I remember from my WoW (WotLK and Cata) days there wasn’t so much smart loot at limited loot.

(spoilers) Revenant -Continuity breaking?

My suggestion I’ve been posting in threads is to have a Revenant starting zone, and a very small personal story specifically for them due to the way things have happened chronologically.

A small living story seems likely to only result in player complaints. Granted not doing it might also result in player complaints….
But they could in theory use the two racial stories (they shouldn’t be too heavily impacted). And then add a revenant story to bridge between that in HoT. Of course how exactly they’d handle Living Story Season 2… It get’s confusing.

Playing in a world where Zhaitan is dead while your PS still has you killing him created the same problems.

They’ll deal with this the same way. Ignore it.

I don’t think there’s too many references in the open world to Zhaitan being dead. In fact I don’t think there’s any in the base game. In fact I’ve discovered the opposite. Having killed Zhaitan and the world still reacting if he was alive.

I think people lack faith in ANet, and assume that they’re stupid or something. It’s a company of ~300, who have been developing this for the past year at least (when it was confirmed that they hired their AI designer). You don’t think that one of them would have thought of this prior to announcing the expansion when immediately this was everyone’s first concern with the class? I guarantee you that ArenaNet not only solved this solution in their own way, but you’ll also be impressed when you see it implemented on launch.

I’m not saying they’re stupid. I’m saying they’re human and thus fallible and limited both in time and effort available to do things. Do I think ANet (if we can even speak of Anet as a single whole) would prefer to do a good job and would prefer to be able to produce a entirely separate Personal Story. But if they actually did it, or if they actually had the time and effort available to them I’m unsure.

I wish we could get some Living World between now and expansion. But I doubt it. Expansions are usually marked by ‘all hands on deck’-attitude which inherently means no hands left for things such as Living World. Would love to be wrong though.

Black lion trading company prices

It could be the opposite. Price going down could be a result of too many “activity”

for example, many people are farming Silverwastes and getting too many rares. Hence more Ectos.

Supply and demand. But I’m with you that over supplying is just as possible as lowering demand.

I think OP needs to play in the Silverwastes a bit and then after seeing what he gets, rethink the possible reasons why prices are dropping.

Yeah, it’s kinda crazy.

You’ve missed the point, GW2 economy is dying day after day , everything is old & outdated , It needs a push up , it’s the right time to do so.

Eh…no. Maybe you rich trading post players think so, but is average joes would love a massive decrease in prices across the board.

For all the amount of gold they’ve been taxing us so far you would think that Lion’s Arch could once again attain its former glory…

No Evon’s running the BLTP and although it’s head quartered in LA it isn’t owned by the government of LA. So all profits go to Evon. Evon is not required to give funds to the government beyond any possible taxation, and is definitely not required to help rebuild. Frankly the destruction of LA has helped to remove many of his competitors, and by all accounts the BLTP is running fine, irrespective of the condition of LA.
