Hey guys!

As the player we get to kill Zhaitan in Arah. We shot him down from high above. But as far as I know there has been no confirmation he actually died. No one went down to his body. Therefore it could be he is recovering from his damage and getting ready for revenge. Wait for it…

No I think he’s officially dead. Would have liked it if he was still alive for the mere implication that we might get a reworked final battle with him.

Also Zhaitan's tail, or at least a large part of it, is in the Durmand Priory during the living story

Ninja edited >.< ^

Well in the final fight they do shoot it off, and he’s mostly perfectly fine without it.

[Sugg] How to fix the Zerker Zerger problem

The only way to properly fix zerker problem (if such a thing exists) is to change the boss mechanics to put focus on tactics and survivability and not on dps. This is particularly true for dungeons, where each encounter can be boiled down to: do a lot of damage as quickly as possible.

Narrative Lessons From 8 Releases of Season 2

in Living World

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

Yay more Shriketalon.1937 and is informative but entertaining graphics.

1) Be careful about biting off more than you can chew. Unpolished and lackluster content can turn a good idea into a bad implementation.

Well I agree with you, that some of the quests we were sent on (such as collecting the crown) was a bit… well not epic. But I think ANet did start noticing this themselves, particularly in Season 2 Part 2 were we’re sent on an entire long journey through interesting environment just to find a single egg.
Although I would love it if someone at ANet had a bit of extra time on their hands to add something epic to say the crown collection quest (unrealistic I know).

2) Don’t use cheap cliffhangers. Seriously.

Agree but I think the cliffhangers were more a product of content segmentation into the episodic format.

3) Character deaths lose their dramatic weight if we all know they’re going to die.

Actually I didn’t see the Master of Peace’s death coming… although Belinda they might as well have put a count down timer over her head.

4) There’s a difference between building a story hook and leaving a plot thread dangling.

Seems to be the only difference between a story hook and plot thread seems to be whether or not ANet actually does something with it. This seems more like a matter of time sort of situation.

5) Be careful when writing magic. Avoid technobabble and obvious plot devices.

Agreed. ANet has a bad job of not explaining how magic works or why a magic thing is magically doing something.

6) Pacing is absolutely critical to building dramatic tension. Don’t let it drop.

Agreed again. I do feel that we’re abusing instant travel via waypoints a bit too much in the narrative. The world loses a sense of size if we’re able to hop back and forth between large wide areas, just to do one or 2 things. I don’t mind going to the Priory, I just feel like I could have completed all by business in one visit instead of having to go back again. But I think this relates back to the story structure. It would be very boring to have an entire episode where we only walk through the Priory archive doing magic rituals.

7) Cast characters that are relevant to the plot for better storytelling.

I honestly don’t mind the biconics. I just feel that there isn’t enough time given to flesh them out and build more personality. The problem with plot relevant characters is that we’d possibly end up with too many characters coming and going leaving us with no solid cast of characters.

8) The storytelling elements need to mix with the multiplayer experience in order to enrich the game in the future. You need to combine the MMO and the RPG to allow the game to grow.

I don’t mind the ability to solo story instances. I do feel that a lot of development went into solo instances (I’d loved to see fractal version of these solo instances, or see a new dungeon or two), but I wouldn’t say that ANet should stop with the solo story instances.

Lore question, human corpse and Pale Tree.

The only connection between human corpses and the Pale Tree is that the Pale Tree was planted on the graves of Ronan’s family. It’s theorized that it’s the reason why Sylvari look human (I guess Ronan buried him family dog with the rest of the family… http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Fern_Hound) but we have no evidence as Zaxares said that the Pale Tree had access to their memories.

CureForLiving.5360

Surely, if it is Iron Legion Homelands, they would have their own name for it before humans arrived.

Initially the land was owned by the Grawl (or evidence seems to suggest) before being conquered by the Charr, later with the help of the Human Gods it was conquered by the humans. I’m not sure about when the Legions were established but I imagine Ascalon was Charr lands before the Iron Legion existed as it does today.

Why would the Charr rename the land that they conquered? I’d think they’d take pride in what they’ve done.

It’s something I’ve seen alot of in South Africa. After the fall of apartheid and a new predominately black party (ANC) became in charge, they started essentially renaming everything even remotely European sounding. I still remember all the controversy when they tried to rename Pretoria to Tshwane (or did they actually manage to do so?).
Basically renaming something is something beyond simply staking a claim, by naming it something else you essentially make it your own. So to say.
But I imagine for GW1 purposes they kept the name Ascalon.

Anyway, so why are the swords divine again?

They come from Orr, and everything from Orr is magic for some reason.

Would be nice if we could just get a nice bit long list of these inconsistencies. If only we had someone who could do it… too bad Koning is seemingly leaving us he seems like the sort of person who could do something like that.

Konig and I started working on a “Lore discrepancy mapping project” some time ago.

DaShi didn’t say that I did :P
But nice work!

I believe that Anet owes it to the fans to make sure the story is the highest quality it can be. If there are “lore bugs,” I just want them to fix them!

Exactly! That’s why I like the lore discrepancies list. However it does seems rather short.

So . . . you’re asking for more retcons.

Retcons aren’t bad. Retcons just mean that the writers can’t see into the future and all knowing about their own lore. As time goes on errors occur, to the writers decide to take the lore into a more interesting directs and inherently retcons are needed.

“Very thick-headed” describes a lot of people here on the forums. (Myself included.)

I like to believe being thick-headed is rather advantageous, it protects the brain you see (yes yes I know it’s a metaphor :P)

This makes me very happy because it allows people to channel their energy into something positive—working together to improve the game. Remember that continuity error that went live in episode 7? That was a bug, a mistake. Someone pointed it out. We investigated it and then corrected it.

I must say this rather impressed me. For all the talk of following an agile approach I never actually felt that ANet was following a agile approach in terms of lore, given the policy of release and only minor bug fixes to mechanical aspects of content. Actually being willing to go back and improve and expand on existing lore I think is the best way forward, also it allows me to hold out hope for further expansions to the dialog trees (give me more dialog options please! )

honestly, my hopes are somewhat high, but i always expect the worst. i’ll probably just sigh really heavily and take a break from the game.

My hopes are needlessly high though, to such an extent that I’m intellectually unable to enter the same ‘expecting the worst’ mindset.

There was talk initially of it delivering an expansions worth (I think it was worth, maybe quality? can’t really recall) of content, but that didn’t really happen. The type and quantity of content produced could never really satisfy the conventional MMO crowd (I still believe that the classic raid model provides the best hidden grind for content production effort. Not that I want raid treadmills).

This. I have the feeling that if we could just get her to talk we’d know ever secret ever in GW lore! But hyperbole aside I think that’s why she got KOed in Season 2, since she could basically have rendered large parts of season 2 pointless by saying “Yo, we’re like Dragon Minions, you should go get Glints egg from the Master of Peace and Caithe killed Wynne to keep the secret about us… so I don’t know keep a eye on her”.

Silverwastes. Everyone knows players mostly leave the map at 0%, thus it takes a while to ramp the map up and taxi people in.

Yeah, the only way to address this would be to synchronize the maps, for example putting Vinewrath on a timer and make it global. Add it to the world boss rotation. That should stop people from jumping to the further along map.

Here I was working on the map for about an hour, taxi’ing people in, and at 60% comes in a zerg led by a commander farming chests.

Not sure how you fix that. Probably another nerf. I think it would be just be easier to use the LFG to find a proper map.

So I finally got around to listening to the newest VisualWood, and WoodenPotato brings up an interesting point at http://youtu.be/nepPhH8uAck?t=23m38s the lack of failure states in Living World.
The closest we’ve come to a failure state was in the Party Politics episode, where we could fail during the interrogation and would have to start over again. We have quasi-failure states in the Living World but these primarily take the form of the achievements, either you achieve it or do something wrong and don’t forcing us to use the motes to redo it. But I think having explicit failure states in Living World (do this in a specific amount of time, or protect this NPC) would add some variety to the experience and interaction.
I’m guessing failure states simply aren’t implemented in the Living Story or the Personal Story, so this might take time and effort to implement but I think it’s worth it to add variety and challenge to the Living Story.
So yeah, ANet please let me fail

All the encounters seem to be designed around warriors or guards and they assume you have a constant heal tick or condi cleanse/heal/massive 20 second heal with massive dps and high armor, which is why other classes find some of these encounters hard.

This is one result of having no trinity- if they designed encounters around the squishies that have to retrait just to have any chance of getting through then warriors would all moan that the content is way too easy.

Simple solution is play guard or warrior and just blast through it.

The warriors and guards do moan that the content is way too easy. lol

Well the later content I was struggling more with my zerker since doing more damage isn’t really beneficial. For example in the new Shadow of the Dragon fight it’s more about evading damage and following the tactics. The damage phase doesn’t seem to be a speed rush either.
However in the earlier content (Glint’s Lair) I had a lot easier time on my Zerker.
So I think it’s simply the changing mechanics. On launch the focus was simply on burning down the enemy as quickly as possible, with little need for tactics or positioning. With the move away from pure dps encounters we’re seeing that positioning and tactics is becoming more important and failure to correctly position or dodge carriers a heavier health loss meaning that glass cannons are less ideal.
Also I was able to do it all pretty easily on my Necro and Ranger, since both have a bit of vitality on them.

So you can either buy gems with real cash, run a bunch of dungeons / fractals for gold (also try doing Tequatl, it gives 2 gold the first time you do it in a day and then 1 gold on your alts for the rest of the day) or get a friend to invite you into their instance.

I keep wondering what the point of rallying is for, I’m currently banging my head against the wall battling the dragon boss in LS, and find that once I’m down I am dead. I don’t have the time to fully revive before the boss’ aoe attacks kill me. Why allow this at all if I can not find a spot to revive in peace. It just seems to add another aggravation to an already annoying fight.

Because it’s more effort to remove a core mechanic for only a single instance than it is to simple leave it in.

That’s my interpretations anyway.

Pack Soldier: Hey Trahearne we’ve just received reinforcement from the Grove.
Trahearne: Oh I see. So many new faced that I’ve never seen before, or for that matter than anyone currently stationed here has ever met. No-one even told me they were coming. And they arrived from the west, from deeper into the Maguuma Wastes. This seems suspicious…
Pack Soldier: Yeah but they’re all wearing Pack armor.
Trahearne: Why did you say so to begin with! Load them onto the airships.
Pack Soldier: But where will we put them?
Trahearne: Next to the exploding barrels of course.

its not gonna be a civil war for the same reason it wasnt any hate for everyone but sylvari that turned into Zhaitan minion when dead, or sometimes not even dead. Or the branded for that matter. Noone says hey, its a branded charr lets kill all charrs.

Yes sylvari is a dragon creation, doesnt mean that all sylvaris is minions.

the simile is somewhat inaccurate: Branded Charr == Char + Kralky corruption; Risen Human == Human + Zhaitan corruption. However Sylvari == Mordrem, no corruption needed. There is the mitigating circumstance of corruption which separate the Branded or Risen from their none corrupted kin, however Sylvari are already dragon minions, they don’t need to be corrupted.

People affected by HIV are not different visually from those who are not, aren’t they? And you’d be still afraid in central Africa. What would you do then, to feel safe? Refuse to take anyone on date.

Well not for the first few years, the moment the aids hits it’s pretty obvious. Also you’re slightly misinformed, we southern Africans have the most HIV. Well one could argue though that it’s difficult if not impossible to get decent statistics regarding HIV infections in central Africa because… well it’s central Africa. But whatever the reason South Africa (my home country…. yay?) has the highest recorded HIV infection rate.

Except in Tyrian Sylvari’s case, you’d like to just obliterate the Plants and hang their salad head on pikes.

What a waste of perfectly good veggies. If we plan it right we can wipe out hunger in all Kryta (for however long the civil war goes on).

I wouldn’t mind seeing an anti-Sylvari faction popping up, afraid of all Sylvari, people who have lost family members to Mordremoth ( like Marjorie and her family) or ex-pact soldiers for example.

They start spreading anti-Sylvari propaganda, harass innocent Sylvari, Publicly hang them (like Mordremoth does to his victims). Maybe even a civil war in LA, when the anti-Sylvari league tries to take over (Maybe Kiel turns out to be Anti-Sylvari and Gnashblade takes over?).

Could be an amusing living world story to see the anti sylvari support gets bigger and bigger until it ends in a grand final fight in LA (or the grove)

Yeah, this seems like the logical progression.
Although perhaps hanging them for their race might not be a good idea… mostly because of… well ANet is an American company after all.

I think Evon’s angle would be riding a popular hate movement to power- something that’s had frequent success in real-world politics. Kiel, meanwhile, would essentially be in a position of turning on a chunk of her constituency- not to mention she’s a painful enough do-gooder to give Logan a run for his money.

yeah, but I’d prefer less focus on the multi-racial LA and more focused on the races themselves. How does the Black Citadel, Rata Sum (or Mursaat if you like anagrams ;P), Divinity’s Reach and Hoelbrak react. Sure LA should also be included but I think it would be better to give us less focused on multi-cultural placed like LA because LA being multi-cultural is non-cultural. Charr aren’t Charr in LA, Norn arn’t Norn. They’re all LAers.

random racist npc: “sylvari are dragon minions”
me: “SO WAS GLINT…. and… that chicken over there….”
twitchy: “bawk?”

Twitchy is going to be a raid boss CONFIRMED!

There is also one other thing to keep in mind. Caithe warned that “Sylvari have already started losing their minds. Mordremoth won’t stop there.” Could that mean that Mordremoth can eventually dominate non-Sylvari too? We didn’t see any signs of non-Sylvari getting corrupted by Mordrem yet, but what if that changes once he awakens? Sylvari may be more vulnerable due to their heritage, but maybe all Mordremoth needs is to infect animals with his spores and he can then mentally command them too. Truly nobody in Tyria could be trusted if that happened.

The question around ED corruption is an interesting one. I think the consensus is that any ED can corrupt in anyway, but that EDs have preferred methods of corruption.

The Egg's destination theories

in Lore

Posted by: CureForLiving.5360

CureForLiving.5360

Why do we need that egg?

The Living Story so far has given us indication that Elder Dragons are a important part of the nature. Elder Dragons absorb magikittenil all the magic has been absorbed then they go to sleep and slowly release magikittenil they start running low, when they wake up and repeat the cycle. It’s been hinted at that having too much magic is a bad thing (well actually this goes back to GW1 lore were the Gods sealed away magic because it was too destructive). So the theory goes that if Elder Dragons don’t absorb all the magic then bad things (the exact nature of which is unknown) will follow.
The problem of course with Elder Dragons is that they’re inherently alien. They don’t think or feel or reason like humans or any of the other races do. They have no sympathy or remorse for their actions. This means that in the quest to consume magic Elder Dragons usually lay waste and destroy everything in their path. During the last cycle (i.e. when the Elder Dragons last awoke) they nearly wiped out the Elder Races (Jotun, Dwarves, Seers, Mursaat and Forgotten) who only survived by sealing away magic in the bloodstones and being hidden away by Glint.
Glint (over the thousands of years of her life) was slowly absorbing magic and was slowly positioning herself to become and Elder Dragon. Although unlike all the other Elder Dragons she actually had sympathy for the lesser races, meaning that if she had lived long enough she could have become a kind and friendly Elder Dragon, able to ensure the natural cycle of magic absorption without the destruction any mayhem that came with it. The theory is that she was planning on taking over from Kralky if they managed to kill him.

Now we get to why the egg might be needed. With Glint dead her child (i.e. the egg) might be our best hope to create a new friendly Elder Dragon. Granted this does leave several questions (how can a Baby Dragon replace a Elder Dragon?) but this seems to be the general line of reasoning.
Why exactly Caithe wants the egg no one knows. Unfortunately she hasn’t been particularly forthcoming about that. But the assumption is that Caithe isn’t evil, so she likely wants the egg to help the Pale Tree or the Sylvari or something like that.

Mordremoth and Sylvari[Spoilers]

That said, there may be some reason that Anet is throwing in the Centaurs. The reason that they’ve given is that Wynne spends her time with the Centaurs in order to learn more about Ventari and his teachings. But it also seems that she spends part of that time in the cave.

I think the Centaurs are primarily there because of the link to Ventari.
Wynne was undoubtedly researching Ventari and the centaurs in the Silverwastes were the closest link to Ventari she could find.
What is speculation is why she was doing it. Maybe she truly just wanted to learn more about Ventari, he’s essentially a religious figure to the Sylvari. A common thread is most religions is the idea that there religious figures were without sin (Jesus, Mohamed, Buddha etc.) and thus that there lives over a sort of guide as to how we can live our lives (remember the saying: what would Jesus do?).
Now the assumption that Wynne had ulterior motives for studying Ventari is at this point not yet factual. Wynne could have been studying Ventari to learn more about what he did or didn’t do to the Pale Tree seed. She could be studying Ventari to continue the ruse that Sylvari aren’t Mordrem. Maybe it’s because of her Wylde Hunt (if she even had one), although we don’t know what her Wylde Hunt could be. All we know is that Wynne’s dream revealed the truth about Sylvari and their connection with Mordy

OK here goes, here comes the truth that you didn’t expect:

It all goes back to the day when Mordremoth came up the idea of with leaving a few seeds of his to one day grow up to a huge Champion of his that is capable of spawning an endless amount of more smaller minions, which head he would insert full with false visions called “the dream”, which top priory was to take out a competitor located southeast of him.
Making this champion know – yet not know – it actually is his minion, letting them live in an illusion they have a free will, and this crusade of theirs is not steered by him thus gaining full trust of other Tyrians and joining forces to destroy Zhaitan (not him simply by pretending to be asleep)
After successfully destroying Zhaitan and all his forces that whole area he occupied is suddenly free for taking since Kralkatorrik is busy weeping in the desert and Bubbles is busy doing dragon stuff somewhere underwater that will forever be irrelevant.
Now has come the time to simply waltz in and conquer aaaaaaaaalll that sweet magic and land for himself, he proceeds in picking some random minion of his called Ce-rar—rarara-Cea? Whatever, he picks Scarlet as his nickname and to wake himself up, then continues to roll through Tyria doing whatever he wants, in the form of this one minion of his. All that destruction in that little form! Imagine him doing the same as himself.
Ok eventually when he has completed his mission some random guys come and 5v1 him on his drill, whatever.
Ok now the oooo-sooo-scary-pact who think they are doing things of free will fly towards him, time to flip the “obey-me”-switch to on his minions, SNAP no more Pact and all that land plus your minions belongs to you now

tl;dr; everything including Zhaitans death was planned by Mordremoth and you were mere puppets in his grand scheme of total world domination

Please note the above is primarily speculation.
What we do know is about the Packs defeat is A) they weren’t expecting such a large counter attack (Mordy is still not yet fully awakened) B ) they didn’t expect the Sylvari to turn on them.

What is Mordremoth and what is Vinewrath?

Also, the example of Kralkatorrik slaying its champion is very similar to Mordremoth’s targeted attack on the Pale Tree. Of course, several important figures were in attendance that day, so the attack may not have been specifically targeted at the Pale Tree.

Mordy isn’t full awakened yet, so I’m sure he’d have been more hands on (possibly). Of course some how I imagine Mordy to be physically rooted to the ground through, so I don’t imagine he’s particularly mobile or at least if he were to move he’d cause massive damage.

I get the feeling that minions, when far from their Elder Dragon, “belong” to the champion. And the Pale Tree is a champion of Mordremoth. Vinewrath is, too. The two of them have crafted their minions differently.

Well we do have some evidence from Zhaitan that Champions do have some tactical control over their minions. Although the exact mechanics of Elder Dragon control aren’t detailed anyway.

Omadd’s machine is still very relevant. It gave us the first real hints that sylvari are dragon minions.

Actually I think one of the first hints was actually the Sylvari immunity to Zhaitan’s corruption. Still there’s a lot of hints here and there I’m sure.

7 MONTHS AGO… I WAS RIGHT! All of you bashed me for saying the sylvari are servants of Mordremoth. Now who has pie on their face?

Probably the person who necro-ed a 7 month old thread just so that he could insult other people and go on a little self-aggrandizing rant.

The point is that the dragon minion theory was bad fanfic material that didn’t need to be used for the origin of the sylvari at all, and just raises even more questions instead of answer—-oh wait, a smiley. Clearly a troll then.

Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean its bad, wrong or silly. All it means is that you don’t like it. Opinion aren’t always factual. I for example rather liked it, which has just as much factual value as your opinion.

Well I mostly block pvp players because… well go play some pvp you’ll know why. But this does seem to be a useful addition, something I actually thought was already in effect. Or at least I thought that we simply couldn’t see parties in the LFG with blocked players

So far the lore has been hinting at the fact that very bad things (might) happen when you kill an Elder Dragon. So far we’ve killed 1 and we’re on our way to kill another. I have a feeling that the narrative won’t just be: kill dragon, kill next dragon, kill next dragon etc.
