Well yes, but why are you using phantasm builds in 2017? Not sure what that has to do with this.

I do fine against thieves with Condi Chrono.

Well that’s not really an accurate view of it. Firstly, phantasms are currently weak to basically everything because of how easily they’re killed. Phantasms are heavily limited in production speed, so killing them effectively disables a phantasm build. Clones, however, are easily and rapidly produced in a variety of ways. The mirage mechanics take clones from ignorable shatter fodder to a dangerous offensive threat.

Additionally, has some mechanics that will really screw up thieves. Most thief burst is targeted, with the exception of vault spammers. The detarget capability provides a really interesting method of totally neutering a thief burst if used at the appropriate time. Combine that with blur protection on important casts that counters the headshot spam tactic and the significant variety of condition pressure from the skills and you’ve got a spec that will be very dangerous in an equal-skill matchup vs a thief.

Back in the beginning of HoT where Chrono was broken and required no skill?

Today condi chrono is a nice build that requires skill to play. It’s strong as kitten too.

I’m ok with that though b/c of the skill required to maximize it’s potential.

Clones that stack 30 bleeds, 10 torment, 10 confusion, etc. by you just dodging…..that kitten is broken. Even Wooden Potatoes said it felt EXTREMELY over tuned. He’s a PvE freak….

I love me some target golem DPS arguments. Yes indeedy. Wooden potatoes is an excellent source for lore in GW2. He should stick to that.

My guild is feeling pretty solid about using mirage as DPS support parts of a 20-man comp

Interesting – I’m struggling to think how to make the most of clones surviving long enough for the ambush mechanic, but I know you must have a solid plan in place.

For WvW stuff just ignore that clones exist. Between the weapon skills, traits, and “ambush” skills that mirage has access to, it’ll be a powerful aoe condie applying class that has good survivability and access to mechanics like boon strip and AOE stability.

P.S. Whatever works for other Mesmers is fine, it’s their time in game. I just get so tired of all the focus on being uber, knowing every rotation, playing the game so rigidly they can’t be enjoying it. Our guild does lots of testing too. Just the other day we had a contest to see who could hit the highest damage (8 mil so far) when they dropped from the top of the guild hall. We play hide and seek, and whatever sillyness we can think of. We help others, in and out of the guild master their characters, will drop what we are doing and go to help a guildy. We’re Mesmers, we ’re not normal And we like it that way

That’s all fine, feel free to play how you want, but don’t get surprised and offended when you get laughed at for jumping into a conversation about actual mechanics with “oh don’t be so serious about being good, just have fun being bad”.

People say Mesmer is a support class only. I think that is not accurate, I play my Mes and take the Commander position alot. I have 2, Norn and Sylvari. My Sylvari is my favorite. She is fast and very agile, we can’t stand still so the quicknesx of the Sylvari comes in handy. I always look for a perch or rock to fight from, and use Phants etc, this frees me to direct my squad. I normally run Berserker, with Chrono runes, but I got interested in DS armor so now I use chest and leggings from DS and the rest Temple of Grenth Berserker. I last a lot longer now with the added health. I use Chorbens Greatsword since I prefer ranged, and an exotic zerker staff until I get another Ascended chest from Teq lol

I really think some wanting more dps really don’t put the wrench time in learning how to fight and stay alive. Mesmers are deceptively dangerous, you just need a game plan. I used to hate running around DS now I love it, Mordrem only catch a glimpse of me, then they wonder what hit them.

To be fair though, I was a runner on my Assassin in GW1, getting around mobs is second nature now.

The next step for you is to test your build, see if you can outperform top tier players in their class, if so share your build and findings with the community.

No one is talking about open world, dungeons or wvw which are absolutely meaningless (and you’d still be miles behind top tier dps classes). This is a raid/fractal top tier disscussion where classes are pushed to their peak performance.

Install a damage meter like bgdm or arcdps (better use bgdm) and actually log your damage rotations. No one cares about subjective “I am great” stories. Back them up with data please.

Also by support class people mean the actual support role withine a group setting. Being commander or not has nothing to do with this. I’ve commanded open world and raids on multiple characters including my mesmer, that’s not what people mean by role though.

You can calculate minutae, or enjoy the game. Ignore stats, ignore, specs, and play. You’ll be much happier. Mesmer won’t be click click boom, who cares? Learn to play and stay alive, stop blaming the class.

I enjoy being a good player. I enjoy contributing to my party or squad. I enjoy completing challenging content. If I played like you play, I’d get kicked from every single squad without a second thought, and then I wouldn’t be happy.

yeah and ofc to make that stand perfectly clear distort doesnt work on deimos’ aoe. “they dont think” goes a long way from being the case. They are ppl they dont make perfect execution and i dont expect them to know the game at such lvl that years long players do.

I get where you’re coming from and I think the Deimos AoE example is them forcing you to use certain ways of avoiding mechanics or not using others. Can’t remember but do blocks work on it? I’ve been a hand kiter on Deimos for so long I don’t even remember what happens when you go to the other world /cry..

If blocks didn’t work on it, you’d have a devil of a time kiting hands.

Not really, the AoE attack he does won’t hit the hand kiter unless he’s right in the middle, even then you just dodge it, not like a hand kiter has anything else to dodge. Then again I hand kite on ele so it’s not like I just block anything I feel like.

You’re talking about the wrong aoe attack. Zealex’s post that you responded to was talking about the arena-wide aoe, not the smash. Distortion works just fine on the smash, as do blocks obviously.

The leaked Mesmer weapon is the Axe and if you paid attention there are long bow using phantasm with the chronophantasma trait activated in the trailer. Another poster linked the images already.

If not two weapons or tying the phantasm to the axe like they tied the axe phantasm to the focus then what is your reasoning???

It’s interresting that i mostly see GS camping mesmers around me. So i thougth this MUST be the way to go.

Most players are bad, that’s just the way it is. GS is a really low effort way to deal enough damage to get kill credit without actually contributing anything useful to a fight.

It is worth noting that the staff phantasm actually has a niche use for open world bosses. Since the phantasm attack scales per unique condition on the boss, it’ll do enormous damage to open world bosses that are getting zerged down. Having a staff around to swap on before fighting a large boss can be useful.

Ps: Woul it be more effective to drop Domination for Duelling if i mostly use Sword Focus/Shield?

No. Dueling is primarily illusion generation and utility functions. It doesn’t really bring anything for most PvE builds when you have chrono providing all the illusions you need.

….I’ll try to provide a bit more directly useful advice than quoting sun tzu.

The build is generally decent, but I usually use sword/focus + sword/shield instead of the greatsword. The reason for that is the pull on the focus. When you engage a clump of enemies, you can yank them together, immob with the focus phantasm + iLeap, burst damage with blurred frenzy and shattering, and then chain cc for a bit longer while still dealing damage with shield 5. After all that you can chain some blocks or run around a little and wait for blurred frenzy to come back off cd.

A lot of mesmer defense is active, and the white mantle mobs tend to have a lot of nasty stuff that needs to be avoided. Try to make sure you’re using blurred frenzy or a block to avoid the high impact things like the seeker condie spins and the knockback chains from knights.

Try to learn how to do quickness buffing rotations. When I’m fighting in the open world, I’ll generally do mini-buff rotations to keep quickness up for the majority of my fights by using well of action, shield 5, weapon swap for concentration, and signet of inspiration + proc signet. This boosts your dps by a pretty substantial amount and lets you mow through those tough mobs a lot faster.

If it’s mainland only they could also make it work similar to the first part of staff. Phantasm on 3 skill, clone on 2 skill. Perhaps with that setup it would lower the need for things like deceptive evasion, chronophantasma etc. It would definitely open up even more build possibilities

Staff does that because it’s a 2hander and they can put the skills wherever they want. A mainhand weapon will not be getting a phantasm. It baffles me why people tie themselves into knots over all these absolutely absurd theories when it’s obvious to anyone with a head on their shoulders that it’s not going to happen.

Something worth noting aswell, with shield you could summon 2 phantas on one weaponset, so maybe mirage’s axe will feature a phantasm skill instead of clone so it adds up to 2 phantas on one weapon set again, combined with the off-hand.

Well, it’s about as generic as a boonshare build can get. It’s the chaos variant, so safer but less potent than going domination. Running commander’s stat gear instead of minstrel’s or wanderer’s isn’t exactly groundbreaking, it’s basically what any good mesmer that knows how to dodge and position in wvw uses.

Superior Rune of the Chronomancer

The runes are avoided because they provide a buff that chronomancers have a variety of ways to acquire that don’t involve sacrificing the runes for. You can get quickness from the well of action, from shield 5, from an interrupt trait, or from traited shatters. Mix and match those to get your quickness instead.

Additionally, you’d have to actually use wells. Using wells and being a “hardcore bursting mesmer” are mutually exclusive. Wells, with the exception of gravity well, are slow and weak in PvP. Necromancer wells are powerful utilities with a significant impact on a fight. Mesmer wells are annoying visual clutter that you mostly ignore.

Never use exotic minstrel gear. Ever. It’s too expensive for absolutely no point. If you must use minstrel, get ascended.

Additionally, the mightyteapot build is just garbage. It’s useful for carrying at xera, deimos, and maybe Matthias, but literally every other boss it’ll do nothing except make life difficult for your druids. You’ll be better off learning to properly use distortion share to avoid attacks; that carries a team much better.

Wow, I had no idea a well-placed Continuum Split can negate fall damage entirely. Surprised it hasn’t been nerfed already. This is going to bring a whole lot of fun to my Chrono gameplay.

Why nerf it? The timing is really really precise and it only effects you. Unlike some trully broken mechanics and pve content. Something something distort share.

Unintended vs intended interactions. Like it or not the devs did intend mesmers to be able to make 5 people invulnerable for 1s, I doubt they intended CS to make you immune to fall damage though.

Having said that I don’t think it should be high on the list of things that need changing but probably will soon anyway, just like when guards and other classes could prevent fall damage with careful timing of JI.

I dont think they intended for ppl to be able to make 4 more ppl completely immune to dmg so often. Hence the nature of the aoe on deimos.

Obviously they did otherwise they would have added a longer ICD.

Geomancy sigils can be very strong depending on your playstyle. If you like to stick close and personal, you can get a lot of mileage out of those. If you find yourself mostly at mid-range, you’ll be better off with something else.

And quickness lets you spam sword-2 and just generally attack faster enough to make up for losses in other areas? I guess while leveling I got used to the whole “GS 2-3-4-2 shatter switch sword 3-mirror images-shatter-sword2” and then kind of wing it from there. Clones on dodging and mirror images let me focus on a shatter-heavy build, I think, while now it’s probably more phantasm-heavy?

How do you tend to engage?

Focus pull into focus phantasm, drop wells, iLeap, shield 5, blurred frenzy, shatter, auto until dead. That’s a quick burst to take care of any normal group of mobs, but it doesn’t stack quickness quite properly. If you’re going against a vet or champ you start with wells, shield 5, then pop SoI, a phantasm (for the proc), and then blurred frenzy/autoattacks/etc to kill. By rotating the SoI and SoI proc you can keep quickness up doing that.

Huh, interesting, I’ll have to play around with it. Switching to dom/insp/chrono from dom/illu/duel feels like a downgrade for the moment, but obviously I need to learn how to play it better.

The keys are that you need to start utilizing the aoe nature of your attacks (wells and shield 5) and you need to start properly stacking quickness. Just with a bit of boon duration gear and a basic rotation you can pretty much keep close to 100% quickness uptime just while roaming around doing little events. Doing that properly makes an enormous difference in how smoothly you can play.

As a fresh 80 mesmer myself, this is very helpful! Does this advice work in open world PvE as well? Or does it just kind of do well enough, and it’s not worth the hassle of changing builds between open world and other content?

The bulk of that advice was aimed towards open world play. Transitioning from open world to instanced content once you’re set up with chronomancer is primarily a function of having leadership runes and changing around a couple utility skills.

If your raid group is missing DPS, switching from minstrels to commanders is not going to make a difference. At best you could push out maybe 5k-6k additional DPS, but that’s just not going to matter much if the rest of the group isn’t doing well.

Do you monitor the quickness and alacrity uptime on your group? That’s the primary control that a mesmer has over DPS. If you’re not producing very high uptime for both, try and improve your play to accomplish that, as it will matter far more than any gearing changes.

If your buff uptime is already good, then you need to just start looking at the rest of the group. See what the might stacks look like, check the DPS of your eles and such, that way you can figure out where the problem is.

Raids need a solo story mode.

Except that raids are hugely closed and require this type of gear to get into. Fractals are even worse at high levels. You need these to get easy gear.. but you need the gear to get there. (not to mention dealing with the elitism in general )

Catch 22

Raids require nothing more than basic exotic gear. Ascended trinkets are easy to get, so many will expect that. Ascended weapons provide a significant boost, but are absolutely not required for raiding. The only thing stopping you is your own misconceptions about raids.

Oh cool a 1 second cast to do less damage then our already low auto attcks.

The “skill” had already a “cast” now you get free dmg during said cast. Its not that hard really

They nerfed the cast time on greatsword to compensate. Iirc they also nerfed it on sword. It’s not just free damage, you’re completely wrong.

Still though, the longer they put off a true balance patch, teh more work it will be since they will have more elite specs to balance. It needs to happen before the second expax drops in my opinion.

Honestly, if they did minor balance patches every week or two, they could take much longer to make the big overhaul balance patches.

No, no, that would imply that some level of thought and competence went into planning out the balance for this game.

If you’re fighting anything more than a single target, phantasms are garbage. No way to “control the encounter” around that.

in pvp ehh you can los them that that might be a problem i suppose.

Yeah, you can LoS them. Or you can just ignore them and squish them with all the aoe that every PvP build farts out nowadays.

I’d also like some examples about the clunkyness and the limited usability ad flexibility if you dont mind.

They’re limited to a single target, so any situation with multiple targets makes them awful. They have a long ramp-up time, so your dps is will always be about 20 seconds delayed compared to everybody else. They’re extremely susceptible to CC or terrain. This doesn’t happen too much in raids, but if you’re trying to use them anywhere that isn’t a simple flat arena they can get stuck on pebbles and fail to function. In non-raid encounters, they still die to any mob that happens to target them and sneeze. This happens in raids too, but aggro is usually controlled better there. Did I mention that literally any situation where you have to dps more than 1 target makes them garbage?

Ok then lets assume that im havent played it for any while. The oly dowside i see in a spec like that is that in pvp destroying your phantasms severly criples your dmg, same with pve but in pve phantasms die harder. OOO great mesmer vet with 5k hours on it could you explain me a peasant what would be wrong with a spec like that?

Because phantasms are a clunky and annoying mechanic that is heavily limited in usability and flexibility. Loading even more of our damage and utility into boosting or using phantasms just pidgeonholes mesmers into bashing our faces against that awful mechanic if we want to be marginally effective at doing anything.

When did it give a stacking damage buff? The wiki has it listed as a stacking ferocity buff.
