Warhorn 4 is one thing I’ve wondered about. I know it stops dealing damage if you lose line of sight to the target during the effect (which is mechanically unintuitive and probably unnecessary from a balance standpoint), but I’m not sure if it damages stealthed targets. Anyone know for sure?
It still does the full damage. I run a thief and always curse if I stealth myself too late (and the horn has been blown)

“HS should be a finishing move, and not another autoattack, so the initiative cost needs an increase.”
(Quote button doesn’t work here atm for some reason)
You do know that for a skill to be a finishing move (when relying on initiative pool), it has to be on a low cost right? At the end of a fight, you’ll always have used some initiatives, the more you use, the less you’ll be able to use high costing skills. A finishing move can’t be a high initiative costing skill.

is there any good way to tell if something is photo shopped?
If it’s good: no
If it’s done by the average person on internet: yes
But the less information on a picture (e.g. only a log), the easier it is to make (whatever you did) seem real
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
u guys see how i showed the WHOLE PICTURE when i posted my proof? DO NOT SHOW COMBAT LOGS! they dont mean anything without a pic to prove it. its easy to recreate and easy to capture.
And very easy to fake the text as well. Sure I could make a log with 10k auto-attack if I wasn’t too lazy with photoshop..
(Even in full pictures it’s easy to fake the text, but meh :P)

1a) Fight closer to his shadowstep point (there’s a buff on his list if he used shadowstep and a white circle where he started the shadowstep)
1b) Bunker for 10-15s so his shadow return disappears and he loses the condition removal (or retreats out of safety)
1c) Force him to use shadow return before unleashing your true fury (with your weapons for example instead of the turrets (=true fury) which are your utilities if i’m not wrong)
2) Pressure when he’s about to heal
3) Denying the healing can do a lot.
Note on (1a): If he’s wielding a sword mainhand he could use a multistep shadowstep, in which case it’ll be harder to guess where the exact point is that you have to fight close at. I for example sometimes use 3-4 shadowsteps in a row (sword infiltrator’s strike, utility shadowstep, utility infiltrator’s signet and F action steal) for a very long gap close that mostly suprises enemy more than a stealthed attack and causes my enemy to react slower than otherwise, granting me sometimes my win.

There is another choice besides the trap.
75 points in Arrow Cart Mastery will get you:http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Toxic_Unveiling_Shot
Even that won’t stop the Thief haters though. Next they’ll complain that several thieves are attacking different gates.
Indeed, it doesn’t take a thief to contest a keep or tower. Any class can do it and SM in particular is difficult to cover all gates at all times.
The fault is certainly with the “one tap to contest” mechanic and NOT the Thief.
Wow, didn’t even know there was this on AC’s… I’m so not going near any enemy AC anymore…
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
What, everyone based it off aesthetics instead of mechanics?
I picked a Charr thief because Battle Roar is a decent utility when you’re stacking boon duration, and a good way to access Fury as a thief. Plus Shrapnel Mine is better than half the thief traps.
In retrospect, I’m pretty envious of Radiation Field and should probably have picked Asura.
A lot of ppl create their first character without studying what all the racial skills are. Most of the time they’ll be a rather high level before they really know all racial skills and cba to restart the character.
On the other hand: Racial skills aren’t rly that important, (nothing at all in PvP).

WvW is fine. WvW players play for WvW, not for extra cash that they don’t need.
I am a WvW player. I play for the extra cash that I need. What now?
You’re not a real WvW player, you are just another pve player. Real wvw players don’t go there to make extra cash, quiet the opposite, they spend on various aspects.
Sounds like you want to 1v1 me and tell me im not a real PvPer. Go ahead. Speak up. But Id like to put a wager on it. If I win, you leave WvW and never play it again and only play PvE where you belong. If I win then I will never play WvW again. Rules are we play one class and have one round against each class. One point per round. Player with most points at the end wins. Sound good? Im up for it. Ill even transfer servers just to put you in your place if thats needed.
I’d take up on the challenge. If you win, you made him waste x amount of gold (which he needed according to this original post) and make him stop wvwing (or he breaks his promise and keeps on playing wvw)
If he wins, you still made him waste that money, and in fact ignore the entire fact and just keep on wvwing ..
Either way, you can laugh at him wasting money … :P

1. Frozen Attack (Chain Sequence)
- Attack at melee (130) range. Each strike splashes water around you, healing you and nearby allies at that range.
My only response on the suggestions:
Frozen attack <—> Splashes water around you
Title and text aren’t compatible (you could use the title for the sequence instead.)

Mesmer/thief team
If mesmer is alive, thief will have to use clusterbomb to keep both stealthed. Easy to counter
If mesmer is dead, thief would be “hard” to capture .. BUT anet already gave you the solution. Build stealthtrap on top of dead mesmer body. Sit next to the trap and drink a wee of tea with your guildies.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
Seriously, you could just as well compare
(warrior) hundred blades – (guardian) whirling wrath – (ranger) maul – (mesmer) mirror blade
Or while you’re at it
(thief) cloak and dagger – (ranger) crippling talon
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
Few flaws (though I agree that the 2v1 should somehow be worked out)
100 players in green server – 30 players vote no, 50 vote yes, 20 don’t vote at all
100 players in red server – respectively 20, 50, 30
Now you still have about 20-50 players in each server who are “allied” who’ll still kill each other despite the fact they are allies.
Also, when a battle is won by temporary allies, a lot of backstabbing will happen.

Best idea ever.. :P Though it’ll need some more objectives to get this since it’ll help a zerg a lot (they don’t have to rely on a person who could accidentally just spill his coffee and not notice the zerg)
Maybe let a stealthing thief be able to take him out as a counter ability for the enemy zerg (or stealth-chaining mesmers).
grrr…. stop turning pvp into more pve
WvW was always meant to be a mix of pvp and pve. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Spamming #2 works great too with the spear, evade plus a pretty strong attack. Path goes far so works against ppl swimming in circles (ruins at the capricorn map).
skill #4 on the other hand is as useless as typing /dance in a fight
I don’t like fighting underwater because of my lack of mobility and plays terrible in group play (spamming #5 only hits 1 person). But yeah, in a 1v1 underwater thief aren’t rly balanced. Easy way to beat them is to just ignore them (#5 and #3). #2 takes a while to start the evade, so they’ll still get dmg nonetheless
Luckily there is no full-water-map or we’ll have even more hate on us

This is evident in the fact that most players are still stopping their attacks and walking backward just because the thief goes into stealth.
At least in your example they walk backwards. I have a lot of targets just stop moving at all. Or even worse, walk forward (without dodging) and revealing their back to me even more clearly …
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
37 thief ? seriously ?
I don;t want to live in world wherelvl 80 player can lose to lvl 37 thief.I’ve killed full 80s 1vs1 on my Thief when I was just lvl 18. Basically take your thief, replace your gear with lvl 75 masterwork, no runes or sigils, whatever upgrades that came with the trinkets already, only invest 8 trait points, and only use your first two utility skills (third tier utilities unavailable so do use any of them). Oh and no consumables (ie food).
I’ve killed full 80s with a level 30 warrior, a lvl 6 ele and a level 14 engi. I never use consumables. Who cares? I played against really bad players back then (the engi part was incredibly lucky … Launched the thief from a cliff) The warrior fight is by using a very coordinated combination of interrupts and the enemy lacking the skills to dodge.. No idea how I won with an ele though; just had one victory with him against probably a bad player once again.
And yes, while leveling my thief I was able to defeat ppl in 1v1’s too.
But with none of the 4 classes I summed up, I could win a 1v1 with 0% risk. I think the biggest risk class I played while underleveled was the warrior. I lack a lot of speed with him (with the weapons I use right now at least)..
Defeating a thief doesn’t require you to be fully leveled, just stay calm and calculate the fight. The first few seconds are probably the most scary ones because you’re unable to figure out his rhythm without a first encounter. After that there’s a big chance that he’ll stay in the same rhythm (for example, my rhythm on a thief is backstabbing probably 1-2 seconds. Staying in stealth doesn’t benefit me while the enemy’s attack are going down CD, so I have to keep the pressure.
The other way around, if I survive a first hit from a thief (don’t go GC .. seriously) I’d use (on warrior) hammer launch just about when he’s going to backstab the second time. Denying stealth is also a great way to stop him. #5 mace when he BP/HS. The KD will knock him while he’s flying midair, a failed HS = no stealth.
Ele’s can use the #5 air (dagger) just when he’s going to connect. I don’t know much about the other classes. But there are ways.
Most players you encounter don’t know these ways to counter stealth or survive them, this is what makes the thief “OP” … In tPvP it’s a lot harder to pull these things off.
Don’t say tPvP ain’t the same as WvW, cause right now we’re talking about 1v1 and not WvW. Most thieves won’t use racial skills, so they don’t count. Food doesn’t rly matter that much (I never use food and skills are a lot more important in a duel).
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
you take in consideration roaming and you mention wvwvw
stealth condition removal, will force you to stay stealthed 4 seconds betwen 30 enemy’s to remove 2 conditions.
blinds will stop an auto attack but will not stop an chainned skill , like whirlwind, hundred blades, whirl from guardian, meteor from elementalist, shatter /blurred frenzy from mesmer etc.
Actually blind won’t even stop a Dagger MH thief autoattack, 1 out of 2 attacks connects even while standing in BP
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
My point was that the ranger fled from the confrontation because he was outnumbered two to one, whereas we would have stayed to fight if it was the other way around. I’m not saying all Yaks do that, but more than half of the ones we’ve been encountering in YB BL don’t like to fight unless they have at least one more guy in their group than you.
Thieves and ele’s are amongst the best classes to roam with because they actually can make a good fight against multiple targets (as you could see in your vid)
Rangers on the other hand aren’t. If it’s a 1v1 it could’ve been possible to win. But a 1v2 against a thief and ele would be a very hard fight.
Outnumbering with 1 more person in a 1v2 isn’t the same as a 2v3 or more. I’m not questioning your statement that a lot of ppl would run if they are outnumbered (quantity does a lot ‘till a certain limit, which is when we start talking about zergs), but that moment wasn’t rly representable.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
I have to agree with evilapprentice though, his post was in no means an attack on the OP. Most of the enemies were just going for the kills instead of actively working as a team. The OP and his buddy didn’t even had to co-operate in most fights (you notice the thief would pick different targets on purpose to not steal a kill). Even if two of them coordinated it would’ve dealt the OP a lot more damage (he didn’t receive much damage at all during the 2nd last battle).
I think most hate went to the ele because he was probably more visible. The enemies should’ve thought it through like the OP did in one of the earlier fights: “Focusing fire on the thief because of his damage output”. We didn’t get to see much of the ele’s fighting, but I assume, based on his health management and the fact that the necro he was fighting at a certain moment didn’t die quickly, that he was bunkering more. The fight just above the southern camp took long enough for ppl to realize that fighting that ele was a waste of time while there is a thief running around taking ppl out.
When I play, I always make sure I have a wingman with whom I can work with. Especially an elusive thief we’d make sure we walk close to each other so we can react once the thief attacks.
One more note I made while watching:
3.37: You state that the ranger was a kitten because he fled. That they only fight if they outnumber you. However if seen from his perspective, he’d see a roaming thief and ele together while there was no one to back him up .. Of course he ran.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
I don’t mind the traps in a 1v1, in zergs however…
Anyone triggers trap? All thieves on that side is screwed.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
As already pointed out, the Guardian as far fewer sources of Aegis than a thief does stealth … especially since C&D has no cooldown (yes, you’re limited by initiative, but good thieves are great at managing this).
I do not see why a thief who is stealthed can’t look at their foe and see that they have aegis, are blocking, are dodging, etc. and instead of blowing backstab and suffering revealed, they instead let stealth wear off, poke once with auto to remove the aegis, then continue on without suffering revealed and the aegis is off.
That large list of skills that count even when you miss, are blocked, etc. spans several types of skills. I do not see how backstabbing someone from stealth and removing their block doesn’t warrant something happening to the thief as well.
Why should the thief not be punished for bad play like other classes? You’re stealthed. You have the time to check boons like the rest of us … and adapt like the rest of us.
Heck, Mesmer clones/illusions skills still go on cooldown even when wasted and those are not just weapon skills but attached to the Mesmer’s class mechanic (shatters) as well. The cooldown is also much longer than the 3s a thief is revealed for.
Given it’s like that for Mesmers and every other non-thief class and the January patch that focused on stuff like this, I can’t see how you can honestly argue that a thief can make this mistake without any consequences … except if you admit you are trying to keep an unfair advantage.
the thief is punished….lol….but as to see your post….u are obviously not a thief. go play one for 3 weeks and come back. anyway to continue with explanation…. thieves are punished with the 2nd lowest hp total…..the squishiest of all classes….low defense….. no blocks…..no protection…..no invulnerability…. extremely limited boon access/application….pretty much 1 weaponset (as you switch to the 2nd you usually have no init to use skills)…….only 3or4 usable utilities (in 95% of all builds)…….mediocre burst/sustained dmg (3rd place behind warrior and mesmer) and only 1 extra way of healing outside of utility 6. so yes…thieves are punished….they should have some kind of “pro” to playing…not just a long list of “cons”. yes we have stealth…but i hardly think that saves grace of all the cons listed….. you can look at backstab alone and say its OP right? i mean does double dmg from behind for 0 intiative……however there are conditions …implications…and drawbacks to having that….you ahve to look at the larger picture and not just pinpoint one small thing and say its OP or broken. just my 2 cents
Travlane, I mostly agree with all your posts, and this time I do too. But just a friendly comment on something you tend to do:
You should stop typing “…” throughout your entire text after almost every sentence. I’ve noticed you love using dots every time you post. I don’t mind the spelling mistakes but the shear amount of dots makes one want to skip your text relatively easy. It fills a text needlessly and is tiring on the eye.
End a sentence with one dot, and start with a capital. You’ll get the same effect as you do now, only it’s easier to read.

Thiefs are op. I asked one if he still had fun with the class and he answered yes!
That’s not fair and most likly op!
So … It’s not fair to have fun with your class? Seems legit…

When I hide in enemy towers to portal people in, I don’t usually hide.
I stand right out in the open until someone sees me than I drop a portal, jump out of the tower and wait a few seconds to portal back in again while they’re chasing me outside. It sounds silly,
But it’s rather satisfying, and for some reason it always seems to work. People get confused and just stop looking for me.
Seen mesmers actually do that trick before :P I’d mostly just start piling traps or invite friends for a tea break around the nice shiny purple shrine.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
If we were playing GW1, than yes I’d agree with this. Having acces to hundreds of skills, making an unique build is really fun and rewarding (heck I even had a E/A that uses dagger skills and I won most scrims with it).
But in GW2 there aren’t many variables. So no, imo there is no realy privacy violation.
Personal I love speccing someone to see how they react to situation from another camera (than facing them). I mostly don’t care about their traits, I just want to find weaknesses in their reactions.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
On mesmers
No comment, I’m not rly good against them. But most of the time it’s a 50/50 win-lose when I fight them. Sometimes I dodge well and they miss out on the key dodges, and sometimes it’s the other way around. This is about 1v1, in bigger groups there are more variables (still 50/50 but other reasons)
On Warriors
No comment again
On elementalists
Impossible? No. I’ve faced a lot of eles already and again, it’s mostly a 50/50 outcome. Important is to dodge the key-elements (like #4 dagger earth, no one likes lying on the ground). As a thief you also (if using pistol offhand) have access to a “spammable” interrupt skill (headshot). After a few bouts (or with luck) you’ll know when the ele is going to try and heal himself. Healing denial is a very strong tool.
On guardians
I still dislike fighting guardians … Their burning annoys me a lot. I’d avoid 1v1 with them.
On Rangers
Using bow only: Gank him
Using sword: Approach with care
(though I’ve seen some good bow-users. Still I’m less scared of them than sword-rangers.)
This is all based on the experience I have with my current build which is rather weak against conditions.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
Wrong part is bold. I was responding to “decent spike damage capabilities”. How on earth did you come to the conclusion that I was talking about the single-target DPS when I specifically quote the “decent” part? :S
Because he only wanted a respond on the DPS part :P
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
I’m not sure where you go this information, All I’ve ever heard from developers is they want the thief class to be the most mobile, with decent spike damage capabilities. Nothing about “highest ST DPS”…..
Please show a link to verify this statement.
Adane, check the last State of the Game stream. It is explicitly stated that Thieves should have the highest burst damage in the game , not just “decent”. They are considering upping damage co-efficients on weapon skills to this effect, not that I expect anything significant until Hell freezes over.

I didn’t even know we could do that, but thank god it’s fixed then. It wasn’t intended to be there, so.
Was an awesome trick though. Mesmer uses feedback – Thief uses shadow shot = Laugh at their confusion (literally confused, not condition confused)

Trip wire should be like spike trap (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Spike_Trap)
First kd on trigger, and another kd 2 seconds after.
Since the kd lasts 3 seconds, the second effect would only hit whoever wasn’t hit by the first.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
I have been struggling with trait builds since this nerf, I like D/D and D/P and the Shortbow the most. I Don’t realy like S/X.
But I just Can’t settle on a new build… What are the rest of you doing?
Still use D/P with mug.
Use shadow shot as a gap closer and (if stealthed) use BS before shadow slash connects. Otherwise start fighting him like you would in any other fights with D/P. Use steal as a finisher or mid fight spike/heal/gapcloser. I like the skill though imo the healing could be a bit better but I can live with that.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
In certain towers (ogrewatch post for example) it’s possible to get allies into the tower (if two thieves stealth a mesmer inside) before enemy notice it. A sudden attack in the back could be rather devastating if not expected.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
wait what? there are complaints about this patch? thieves got buffed for once. you can’t be serious. i am having such a good time right now. mug is now a SICK mid-combat clutch heal and finisher. I am loving it.
There are ppl who think steal is only good as opening strike. But agreed though, I like the change to mug.

Unload:
Evade back while Unloading. So you constantly evade as you unload.. Think about what you’re saying here.
Every dual skill have an evade part in it (shadow shot and shadowstab have a small window of “evade” but they aren’t like PW, DB, unload or flanking strike where you are rather “stationary”. They are (respectively) Gapcloser and gapcreator). It’s weird that p/p doesn’t rly…

Depends
Situation 1) I was fully recharged and started fighting with him with no distractions around
I’d get away if the fights takes too long. I’ll probably have popped my elite already during the match and didn’t beat him with it. My bursts weren’t effective enough and the longer a match takes, the harder it is to maintaining my initiatives and the bigger the chance I’ll mess up and go into a messy situation.
Situation 2) Fighting someone right after another battle, my health is recharged but I have skills on CD
If the battle is rather equal and I know that those utilities I have, can change the tide I’d keep fighting (maybe prolonging the battle with stealth) so my utilities have time to recharge.
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]
Even when I’m not playing on my main (thief) I enjoy fighting thieves just as much as I enjoy fighting any class.
When playing against a thief it’s about recognizing when they are going to burst and predicting their movement when they are stealthed.
As a thief I’ve also played against good necroes (your main I guess) who know how they protect their shrine (this is from tPvP experience since it’s in the spvp forum).
Dodging: Yes we can dodge a lot. It’s our only way to deal with damage. Most classes have blocks, invulns, protection boon or combinations. Thieves don’t have acces to any of those. Our only way of dealing with damage is to avoid it.
Cleansing: No, we thieves don’t have a lot of acces to it besides when we go perma stealth. But perma-stealth in pvp? Don’t think his team will win.
Porting: only sword main hand have acces to “too much porting”. This skill will burn away his initiatives if not used wisely and does minimal damage.

Something like this?
I got that now
Last time I had this problem was when the game got released. They advised me to change my antivirus program (AVG and 1 other virus program weren’t compatible with GW2) so I bought a new antivirus program and fixed it. Now however I have the problem again.. Hope it’s something on their side instead of my side this time.

After you headshot, you should have you target automatically defeated. Just common sense.
So freaken true. They should give headshot at least SOME damage.. lol… what a fail skill design….
I love the HS design though. Great interrupt spammable skill. Giving it more damage would make it too strong imo.
Imo they should just change the name of the skill because seriously. Headshot = dead
I wouldn’t quite say it’s spammable. The thing about HS is that it has no dmg whatsoever.. If you compare it to Dancing Dagger, Headshot becomes quite inferior and not viable at all imo. That’s when you know HS needs a buff. And plus it’s also a combo finisher, why not give it at least SOME damage to actually make the skill worth of it’s skill’s name?
In a 2v2, it’s enough to make the bunker ele die (if you are coordinating with your partner). It could use a small buff, but the damage should still be low since it’s an utility skill. It should be used pure for the interruption. Great skill for healing denial.

this would be a advantage for the players who gets their classed nerfed, they could all switch to warrior or thief, the least likely professions to be nerfed.
