Colin Johanson PAX Interview

Lethalvriend.1723

SKIN WARDROBE! YES!!!!!!!!!! Now, I heard some things from a friend that actually spoke to one of the devs at PAX but this, lots of reassuring info. I really wish that Anet would put this sort of information on the official site more often like the ‘looking ahead’ blogs. I sometimes find links in this forum that are months old that give such important information on what’s going on in the cooking pot but most people won’t find it. That aside, it’s pretty cool they are also going to add a minor visual to legendary jewelry and that new races ARE actually considered to come ‘sometime’. (Quaggan, Largos.. heck, I’d play a skritt). Like Colin said in the interview himself, some people get very worried regarding certain features in the game and whether some things are or aren’t coming. Send us some information on what’s brewing, show us a teaser image of ascended gear before it’s finished etc. It would really take some heat from the pot in many topics on the forum. Overall, I’m looking forward to what is to come in the game.

I’m going to guess they will scale kits to what you have currently have equipped, at least that is what would make the most sense to me. People with kits wouldn’t have an advantage of ‘cheap ascended’ and they wouldn’t have the downside of no scaled stats.

In the past people had HUGE amounts of karma, personally I have over a million and I never farmed karma. Not only that, I have already bought tons of stuff with it in the past and took a long 7month break in between. I’ve heard of people that had 10m+ karma, they simply added some value to it because there was not much to it in the past. Whether they have pushed it too far or not, I don’t know. We’ll find out what other karma rewards we will get in the future. For now I think it’s an ok amount.

I agree it would be great to have all such unlocks account wide. Personally I’m the kind of person that wants us to be seen as a player rather than a character. With the account wallet and lots of other account bound features already I hope that they will push more things this way. Including WvW ranks for example (just like glory ranks being acc wide etc). Who knows? Perhaps it’s on their watch list but just a very low priority right now.

If you compare this game to everything else on the market, it beats them all by miles. The game is still lacking some core feature polish but I’ve had my money’s worth x100 so far and rising. I do have concerns with the direction of some things in the game and I’ve voiced that aswell. However, whenever you make a new character or go explore you will always find new little things and events that remind you that this game is still overall the best out there. I also quit around january as one of the other posters here because I sort of burned out on the content. I got back into it about 2 months ago and I’ve been playing it on and off, almost daily now.

In about 1-2 hours (or maybe it’s already live) my favourite event appears again, probably a favourite of many. You should really check out Rata Sum (it’s to the west of the Sylvari capital city) and take a look at the ‘Super Adventure Box’. It’s really awesome and it is sort of like playing zelda/mario etc inside Guild Wars.

As for the guesting feature, like others said before me, you can do almost everything on another server with it and you don’t have to transfer. You can actually guest on 2 servers at once.

A little to the north while inside the cave you will find really odd markings on a cave wall which, as far as I’m aware are not related to any races nearby. The one in this screenshot looks mostly like Jotun stones like pointed out by the rest.

i could care less about the exp i wouldn’t of unlocked them if i did and you don’t realize how many weapons i exotic weapons i have unlocked over 100 exotic weapons i crafted for weaponsmith alone to unlock them all thats alot of Mats and gold down the drain if the reset it. i don’t care about the exp for them.

It’s not as if you can never ever see those weapons again and ArenaNet has taken away your ability to make them. Re-discovering them is exactly the same as re-crafting them. All you’re losing is the recipe, not the ability to craft these weapons. A true waste of gold and mats would be if ArenaNet reset everyone’s crafting rating to 0 and you had to hit 400 again.

I think you are missing the point of the OP, he doesn’t care he can still craft them. It’s about having the list completed, like a collector wants to have all minis or a deck of cards irl. That is exactly why he/she is upset. Personally I’ve done collecting in a similar manner in another game where I eventually had every possible crafting recipe in that specific game, I would be upset if the hardest/most expensive ones are suddenly gone too.

I can see your point OP, I’m also a bit of a completionist and as far as Jewelcrafting goes I also discovered nearly every single recipe from 1-400, I didn’t go as far as you and thus it doesn’t bother me as much. I also believe that this is simply lazy design as they could have simply added the ascended crafting to level 400, adding another 100 levels is just more artificial ‘time gating’, in this case, a gold drain. Perhaps you can work something out with support before it is all vanished but I really doubt Anet will do something different and erase your completed list anyway.

Either way, good job on the cutscene and I think the mix of ingame/prerendered actually looked quite good.

What player suggestions have Arenanet used?

Lethalvriend.1723

That’s true, but I’ve played quite alot of MMO’s where solid suggestions (things you see in modern mmos quite commonly now) were simply ignored or took years before they were implemented or not at all. I create games in my spare time, although obviously on a much smaller scale but I see ANet as a company, compared to experience I’ve had with others, that listens alot more. Or perhaps you could see it as, they recocnize and are more willing to implement well thought out user suggestions.

What player suggestions have Arenanet used?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lethalvriend.1723

Lethalvriend.1723

From what I can tell, the devs definetely listen to lots of feedback but the vast majority comes from the living story forum, fansites, general discussion and the pvp/wvw forums. Things like account wide karma had been suggested since launch and with the ‘wallet’ making almost all currencies acc wide they decided to bring that with it.

Fractals was in part made due to people requesting for endgame.

Crafting with items that aren’t in your collectible tab (bank) was added. Aswell as a minor UI change in the crafting panel.

No more 1time events like southsun because lots of ppl had issues with it, although this likely was also heavily influenced by them noticing so much server strain.

Improved champ loot.

Dungeon loot changes, which are now on like.. the 4th iteration since launch?

Previewing in the TP, although it was likely planned.. the game has felt like a beta from launch due to many features still needing to be implemented. I suppose that’s with all new MMO’s though.

There are alot of other changes made that I cannot think of right now, but in general, Anet got information about what sort of things people want. After prioritizing such feedback they then put their own twist on things. Nobody suggested fractals literally the way it’s done ingame, nor the ascended gear. People just said they wanted to have X Y Z to do and Anet used it’s own creativity. Comparing my experience with other MMO development companies I would say they listen alot better to feedback.

He/she could be lying but the way it is now it sort of seems like the personal ifinity ball story is linked to the living story we have now. During the personal story your first encounter with the steam creatures is while investigating the possibilities of the infinity ball, which later on leads to this alternate future of yourself showing up.

The foundation, not made of stone, but sand (which get blown away when truth is revealed). Same with the fog, it’s to cloud our vision over the truth and once blown away.. reveals that which we have always seen but didn’t link to whatever the truth may be. This information can be interpreted in so many ways, all this conspiracy theory stuff is fun to do though.

I’d recommend making an Asura, their ears actually move based on emotions (in combat, out of combat, /cower /laugh etc.). On top of that they are also a bit comical in general, sort of clumsy. At least that is the way I see them. If you really insist on humans, light armored classes can use robes to cover up the legs. I do agree that the human race is rather thin in this game, you can’t make a wrinkly or chubby character sadly.

That’s just outright ’I’m ignoring the error of my ways for my own good and hope nobody notices it’. I doubt they will actually ban people for it but I’m sure as hell that next tuesday this event will be nerfed bigtime.

Advice on gear upgrades

in Players Helping Players

Lethalvriend.1723

Lots of usefull tips in here, I’d like to add that there is no reason you shouldn’t do a low level zone apart from slightly less experience from kills. If you do alot of events in a zone you enjoy, even if it is lower level you will still find decent loot and you will gain good exp from the events. You’ll learn how to deal with the game better over time and have fun without dying much. I’m guessing you are doing straits of devestation or something by now, that zone is infamous for being quite harsh if you are solo. At least to me Orr used to be the hardest zone to travel through and it still is pretty tough with a non-geared lvl 80. When I first got there I didn’t die much but it definetely was a struggle compared to all other zones before it.

Things you want to see in GW2 before you die.

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Lethalvriend.1723

Lethalvriend.1723

I’d like to see more focus on zone-wide content, perhaps a small storyline of a group of adventurers that you can run into and do a long event chain with in multiple zones.

Dyes to be account unlocked, among the MF vendor items being account bound instead of soulbound.

More dragons. Dragons, dragons, dragons.

New zones with lots of lore attached to them, perhaps to continue a story of a previous zone next to it.

Underflow maps, make players join in underflow maps by default if there are very little players in a zone, this would help keep the world feel alive.

More consequences for large scale events that fail or succeed, perhaps some areas could get daily event chains which can either succeed or fail and have great consequences in that zone, from a settlement being wiped out for a whole day or a zone taken over entirely by a hostile faction.

More dungeons aswell as a single ‘dungeon token’ currency, on top of that.. nearly all bosses to be reworked so they have much more interesting mechanics and don’t rely on being HP bags in many cases.

Today after pretty much almost a year of playing I singlehandedly pushed the entire Harathi hinterlands into the final stage which attracted quite alot of people, I think that every zone should have MULTIPLE of these kind of events. It reminded me of what I loved in this game near launch, sadly alot of these aren’t done that much anymore. People in MMO’s tend to only focus on wealth, esteem/kitten etc and they forget that there’s cool stuff all over the place, ready to be found.

I think that if they expanded all zones to have these huge events and then make these events even more worthwhile to do vs the current champion farm it may actually solve a problem of empty zones. I cannot see how anyone can enjoy a mindless zerg of loose events or small event chain for hours on end, after spending an hour or so pushing these events in Harathi (it’s not the only nor the first events I’ve completed this way) I actually felt like I enjoyed the game alot more than usual. I did this on a low level character during levelling so I didn’t get some amazing lvl 80 rares but if Anet can expand upon the events in each zone to all have big meta events rather than many small ones it could make the game so much better.

To me, the harathi hinterland centaur war meta should be the example of how all zones should have half a zone of events contribute to a climax such as that one. The Balthazaar one also felt like this when I did it a long time ago for my shards. It just seems to be missing in quite a few zones.

Why Thaumanova Fractal could be Awesome

in Living World

Posted by: Lethalvriend.1723

Lethalvriend.1723

This video was awesome, I personally remember doing that infinity ball mission in the past and I too remember wondering.. the battle of divinity’s reach giving me questions. Now after watching this video I also remember the alliance heart quests in the western part of brisban wildlands where we had to disrupt the meetings and steal information etc. If it turns out that all these alliances are somehow tied together through the infinity ball personal story and thaumanova.. that would be epic. I’m just a little worried though, that it may all be unrelated afterall. I don’t recall seeing steam creatures with the aetherblades, I did not play during the pirate living story and I haven’t seen them spawning on any new places (perhaps I should go check that out again). But yea, looking forward to the 20th and see how much of our minds will get blown that Anet has actually created something awesome which seemingly felt irrelevant and unrelated.

On another note, Anet said we will be getting content that changes the world forever on a larger scale than we’ve seen before. Could it be that we fail the stop the steam creatures from rising to power and face them as the big bad guys for a while? Perhaps the fight with them could cause destruction or new steam creature bases where we get new events/hearts or something along those lines.

I check out the game from time to time and play through new stuff, I hardly know anyone irl that still plays though so that usually doesn’t last too long. I enjoyed the current LS alot and I am looking forward to all the stories being tied together. Before all the LS my main drive in playing the game was exploring, lore, finding secrets and doing all the jumping puzzles etc. As you said, the lore came to a dead end and eventually I got bored since there wasn’t much new to find. I hope that train will soon start moving again and from what I read around the forums and some interviews, we’ll be getting that in time.

Need suggestions for support warrior build.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Lethalvriend.1723

Lethalvriend.1723

Personally I run a warrior support build with a hammer and mace+shield. My traits don’t directly support the team but I use Shake it Off, Endure pain, Fear Me! and the elite banner. Supporting players is more of a playstyle than an actual build in my case, I use the hammer to knock mobs away from allies or slow mobs chasing them. I use stuns to keep monsters from attacking allies aswell as Fear Me! It’s quite a different build from what you are running, I also use PVT gear on that character so I can take a beating instead of an ally when neccesary. My Damage isn’t on par with a Zerker warrior but I do respectable damage with my hammer. Whenever a boss is melee unfriendly I swap to a rifle and make sure I keep people on their feet with condition curing and reviving them. I think going too far into the support role reduces your own effectiveness too much to make that role worthwhile. It also means you depend more on the skill and gear of your team than yourself when things go wrong.

Lethalvriend.1723

I think people are forgetting that out of just about all the content we’ve had, there are very few actual challenges. Alot of people hate Giganticus Lupicus, I personally love it because it requires the player to respond to mechanics or be punished for it. Now I am the type of player that has ‘raided’ and played tournament pvp in the past for quite some time and I enjoy a challenge. Naturally I really enjoyed this gauntlet content.

I can see that there are people that want to have everything and I agree, this gauntlet should have came with 2 difficulty modes just like SAB. I do think that giving the hardmode an extra item of some sorts is a good thing, there is almost nothing in this game that destinguishes a good player from a not as good player. During the livestream about the jubilee they specifically mentioned they wanted to give players something like that for a change. If you look at all the content we’ve been getting this is the first update apart from fractals that gives a reward for a challenge that not everyone can get. Is that really that bad? All the words said about conditioning and players’ attitude probably applies here. People are so used to get everything they want if they just bash their head against the wall enough times that content like this causes an outcry. I hope ANet isn’t scared off from doing it in the future but simply adds 2 difficulties instead.

Like said by others here, the yellow stones are for lvl 1-79 and are fairly easy to get. This game is free to play after it’s purchase and has some mechanics that slightly favour spending real money. But on the upside you are saving yourself 10-15 euros a month on a subscription fee. If you play this game a bit cleverly you can get everything you want without spending a single bit of money. GW2 has one of the best cash stores in a non-sub MMO where nothing in there makes you ‘better’ than anyone else. Better yet, the gem/gold conversion allows you to just play and when you saved up some gold you get yourself the item from the gemstore.

You’ve just made an honest mistake here and there’s not much to be done about it right now other than to listen to people’s advice here. Everyone makes mistakes, that’s life.

Lethalvriend.1723

Personally around launch the community was the best, and in early lifespan of MMO’s the community tends to be at (anticensorwordlol) its best because alot is unfamiliar. Currently GW2 still has alot of those people and it’s ‘only’ 1 year old. I don’t see this changing much in the future. There are elitists in every game and I think just about everyone that games regularly has taken a game a bit too serious at times. It’s those people that sometimes lose their patience and get mad or talk others down. Personally I don’t see them often and comparing this to a couple of other MMO’s I’ve played, overall my own experience is better here. The only downside is the silent travellers, you do stuff together at events and see alot of ppl but almost nobody ever says a word and that’s not down to the game, it happens in all MMO’s. It’s a bit of a missed oppertunity to meet new people but I’m getting OT here.

The LW Content (POV) + Game Progression.

in Living World

Posted by: Lethalvriend.1723

Lethalvriend.1723

I’ve personally been with the game since release and quit after winterday, I did came back to check some updates every now and then but I am feeling very much the same as you. I’m the kind of person that loves exploring every corner of the world, find hidden books or caves etc. The Living Story in it’s current form does not add any of this at all, I too felt the most excited with LS when the karka attacked. Sadly the one-time event thing did mess with alot of people’s playtimes, it sucks if you miss something like that. However, the whole server got itself together and it gave a sense of community where everyone was waiting for the event to start. Sure the servers couldn’t handle it and I lagged insane much but the feeling of the event was unlike any LS we’ve had after it. I personally had hoped that southsun would lead towards another elder dragon, specifically the one connected to water but that’s another story.

As for the LS we’ve had, if you look at it objectively, the actual ‘content’ we’ve had, and by that I mean stuff like gear, zones, dungeons, events. It’s not ‘that much’ in some of these LS parts. Cutthroat politics takes the cake here where there was 1 event (Kiel and Gnash were identical sorta so I count that as one) and 2 minigames. The rest was purely linked through achievements. That was not new, it was ‘do what you always did or already did, except use an item before you do it this time’. I feel like they got away with it ok as it was more about the vote than the content, however. Alot of the LS before this had similar issues, there was not that much actual new content. It was more about achievements sending you back to do things you have already done. I don’t mind returning to an old zone, but put some new puzzle there or a new chain of events.

I haven’t forgotten we had new puzzles, guild missions etc. That’s PRECISELY the content I want to see more of and I’m happy with it so I don’t come here to give feedback on how to improve.

I have hope that things are going to become much better, I read the interview with Colin about them wanting to get the yearly content produced first, so they can build upon it in the future. They are nearly finished with that now and thus we are going to start seeing their true meaning of content updates with LS. I really am looking forward to it, but so far they have missed the nail by a tiny bit every time, sometimes more. But that’s all we can do for now, hope that what they have in store for us will be more permanent content, this time even better than southsun.

Scroll down a little on the first post of this thread, it gives some insight on what they intend to do with the LS and why the current LS is not really up there yet.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/jubilee/So-EVERYTHING-in-this-patch-is-temporary/first#post2560578

Hearing this gives me some hope, he clarifies quite a few things that felt like ‘what are you guys even doing there?’ before that response. I do realize they have a much smaller team working on the game now but I, like many others really really wants to see more permanent content. New zones with lore from GW1 or new lore, or expanded lore. Something that allows the player to find out things that explains more about the world that we play in. The current zones all have loose dynamic events, yet they could link events through entire zones to tell stories. This could be added on top of current events and would honestly make levelling alot more fun to me, but also to just go to a zone and find out which story plays out in it. There is also not very much character attachment at the moment as the NPC’s from one LS don’t appear right in the next, or if they do, they don’t get much spotlight. And not only that, if they would make NPC’s from dynamic events appear in multiple zones a player may go ‘oh hey it’s that adventurer again!’ or something along those lines. Personally I am just going to wait and see how things will play out in the next few months, because they have definetely been listening more to feedback than many other companies I’ve seen out there.

The Living Story is nice and all, but for example; the cutthroat politics were 2 minigames, 2 ‘king of the hill’ instances, the rest were just achievements telling you to do things we already did for a year except now we had to use an item during it. Bazaar of the four winds was cool with the new mechanics though and according to Colin these yearly events are going to be built upon to become even better each year. I also agree that southsun with the fotm+new map was actually more interesting to me than the dragon bash etc, heck dragon bash made me skip the pirate LS. I just got bored because it all seemed like a cash drain event with the gambling for races etc. The adventure box was also amazing, that is content that should stick around. But funnily enough, that seems to be whats happening here. The yearly content which has been added all seems to be higher quality than the temporary stuff. That’s understandable since you dont want your hard work to go away. I can see it’s difficult to make all this LS content in such a short time and being limited by a budget/resources.

In a perfect world we’d have both, but sadly that’s not the case. As it stands right now, LS is ok to me but it won’t let me get a long term connection to the game, as is evident by months of personal absence. I think they could introduce some group of adventurers that you can encounter in every zone, depending on the day. Perhaps with an npc in LA telling you where they went off to this time, then you go to the zone, find them and do a chain of amazing crafted story driven events. It’s just an idea, it would require alot of work to get a chain for each zone that is actually relevant to those npcs and the zone. I’m starting to ramble here, so I’ll wrap this up. I’d love to see new zones and actual ‘content’ that don’t rise or fall based on achievements.

I’d just like to add in case anyone at ANet reads this, you guys are definetely improving and doing something that hasn’t been done before. You deserve credit for that and I hope things will only get better.

The only bugged tower I encountered was the eastern Queensdale tower which coincidentally was also opened during the livestream. I’d find it hilarious if that is what bugged it out. Basically the chest is opened even if you have 0/30, in my case I came to Queensdale for the first time at 9/30 and it was opened before I even got to the top, ever.

There’s quite a few portals and blocked off passages in this game. Harathi hinterlands has one to the west, brisban wildlands has one to the north over a collapsed bridge aswell as a cave to the west. Mount Maelstrom has a passage to the southeast. Fields of Ruin has a passage to the southeast, there are plenty others that I can’t think of at the moment.. oh right, Celadon Forest has a gate with Tengu in front of it, aswell as Lion’s Arch.

I used a rifle + axe/warhorn build in one of the ‘tips for liadri’ posts around here. I personally wore full zerker jewelry and armor and I had a 1% wipe due to time when I was still learning (but on my 4th try!) using this build. I basically used signet of rage right as I started, then popped my warhorn for even more swiftness to keep 100% swiftness through the rest of the battle (by renewing it). Walking close to the middle in phase 2 while circling around the map from safe spot to safe spot I eventually killed her with a rifle. The shadow copies did block my path quite a few times but I made it in the end and this build actually made it quite ‘easy’.

The build was in this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/warrior/Tips-for-Liadri-Warriors/first#post2577131

One is indeed alot more expensive for it’s skin… Had they removed the gold cost on the gauntlet gear or vastly reduced it, it would actually be worth buying.

I think making them even more difficult would make certain encounters impossible for certain classes. A couple of them are already really close calls between a few classes/builds. Having challenging content give a special ‘Gift of xxx’ though would be cool, as long as it isn’t temporary. Otherwise you won’t be able to get said legendary at all for a year because you may have been on vacation, in the hospital.. or had no time for any other reason.

I agree that having invisible walls to prevent cheating would have been ALOT better. I played through this as a Charr and that covered a large part of the screen in many cases.

I recocnized the sylvari after played ME as a female character from 1→3. I’ve also heard voices of actors that voiced in many other games, one of the elderly voices I’ve heard was also in skyrim for example.
