Thoughts on open world pvp?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seera.5916

Here are some facts:

  • GW2 PvE is built to be cooperative play; open PvP in PvE is competitive. The design concepts don’t mix.
  • Western MMO’s that offer PvP servers are all built to support that feature, and have factions which are enemies. GW2 does not have those factions.
  • WvW fills a similar niche. There are factions there. There are PvE-like objectives (mobs, tasks to complete, looking over one’s shoulder while doing so is a good idea, etc.).
  • ANet has periodically put in incentives to get players into WvW. The most recent example is the daily changes. Open PvP in PvE would likely detract from WvW.

All of this means that it is highly unlikely you will ever see what you’re asking for.

I think this is more what i was looking. Most people are wanting to reply “no” or “yes” but without any specific reasoning as to why. I think i could see this.

I can say personally i never had any issues with “camping or griefing” even in wow as far as that goes, i just always liked the idea of open world pvp. Not sure why but i hate having to join an instance just to pvp.

Even on non pvp servers you COULD pvp if you wanted to by turning the pvp option on, so that way those who wanted to could, and those that didn’t want to couldn’t be attacked(unless they did something stupid like invade the opposing factions base, in which case pvp is implied).

I wonder about a world pvp toggle? this way it would be mutual, and those who didn’t want to didn’t have to.

I like the concept and the fun it create, i also understand it creates camping and unfun “questing” etc.

The fun is only on side of the school bullys that like to grief other players and jump
in their back when they are already nearly dead from fighting against mobs.

So NO .. for the 10.000th time.

These games may work in Korea, but not in the west.

And here is an example that makes me wonder if the toxicity ad griefing might be not on the side of the PvPers after all. Calling the OP a school bully for expressing an opinion and asking a question ?

Now that you bring the subject up – when that opinion is wanting to be able to attack other players who aren’t interested in PvP? Wanting to fight other people who don’t want to fight other people seems to fit the description of a bully quite well.

World pvp comes in different formats. In wow it is also toggleable on non pvp servers, so those who want to, could. I never expressed what you said directly, you inferred YOUR viewpoint into mine, which is also a logical fallacy, because if you consider one side, you must also consider the opposite. Read my above response about a solution that encompasses both sides.

How do you counteract the players who will pester people and harasss them if they don’t turn it on? There are people who already give anecdotes that it is already hard for ANet to punish harassers.

Switching to full server?

It isn’t active population. Find me a dev post that explicitly states that it’s active population. And by explicit, I mean actual words “active players” or “players currently online”.

Not times when it is best to attempt to transfer to a server that’s full.

Dev’s have stated that it’s based on players who call each server home.

And why don’t they go to low if it’s active population during the wee hours of the morning on the lower tier servers? Why is it only just to very high?

Very high suggests just a small percentage of players moving around or the cap having been adjusted.

You should res people. People should get res’d.

It’s quicker to res someone than it is for them to run back. You then have that person back in the fight.

Now if you are getting downed a lot, considered taking off some of the zerker gear. I’d rather you did like 33% less damage and not die, than to do that extra damage and be dead half of the time. Corpses do less damage than Nomads. (On flip side, if you find yourself never dipping under 80% HP, you could put on some more damage)

Lastly, I’d rather people take risks for tactical advantage, then to play it safe because they don’t want to risk the WP walk.

We may want to live up to that “nicest community” title.

It’s not faster if the person doing the rez gets killed. It’s not helpful to everyone doing the event if it lowers the DPS enough that the event fails due to not being able to get the boss to 0 HP before the timer ends.

Rezing fully dead people when you are in combat (which you would be during a boss attack) takes forever and a day. During which time you are immobile. Meaning you can’t dodge or move out of a red circle. That leaves the person rezing in a dangerous spot for forever and a day.

I don’t know about your character, but mine can’t take being hit for forever and a day and remain alive.

This is an MMO, you never be 100% sure that someone isn’t around and just because they weren’t 1 second ago, doesn’t mean someone didn’t just log in or exit from the mists to there.

You can play “solo” but you can’t expect to not be helped by other players.

If being helped by other players is such a detriment to your enjoyment that you would rather log off than be helped, MMO’s may not be the game genre for you.

Traits Part 2

So .. new system :
- Traits can now be earned starting at level 80
- people wanted more challenges, so traits are now only awarded for beating special
challenges like beeing the best dungeon / fractal speedrunners
- you can also win some traits if you win in an E-Sports tournament

Is that the reason of this new thread to speculate how you can change the traits
to make them even worse than now ?

I got the impression that traits would be earned like they will for masteries. I did not take that to be that you will be level 80 before you can unlock the traits. Just that they will be earned like masteries.

I’d have loved for gliders to be used from everywhere in Tyria.

However, I understand why it’s not possible.

The invisible walls on the mountains that keep you from going past them? They may not be high enough to stop someone flying from passing by. Breaking the map.

Jumping puzzles, vistas, etc could be made too easy. Which I doubt ANet wants to do.

There would have to be too much work to counter those things for the percentage of players who would actually go and use the gliders in the original areas.

“It’s meant as a means to hold agony resistance for Fractals and it just happens to be a little bit more powerful”

Incorrect.

Exotics could hold AR. They made the choice for a new more powerful tier of gear for other reasons.

Ascended exists to appease the crowd who really likes spending time to get gear and who doesn’t like spending that time unless they can be “better” than other players. It also exists for some in-game economic reasons (it helps to take gold out of the economy… but there are lots of ways of accomplishing this, obviously).

Never said ANet couldn’t have put it into the Exotic tier.

Just said that Ascended was meant to hold Agony resistance for high level fractals and that it was a little bit more powerful. Which it is.

And then explained why they put it in in the first place, which is what both you and I said, but in different words.

Guild Wars 2 is my first MMO. Ever. I played warrior, ranger, and elementalist during the third BWE (only participated in one BWE). Mostly played warrior.

My first character come first day of headstart for the pre-order crowd: elementalist.

I was not overwhelmed by the number of skills I had.

Didn’t take me long to figure out that fire and air were for damage, water was for healing, earth was for defense. And it was mostly instinctual.

And to add on to what cosmatman said, the NPE now also locks attunements behind levels. I’m not sure if you get just fire or fire and water at level 1. Haven’t rolled an ele since the change. Still only have just the one ele.

If you have the time to get to level 50 fractal, which takes more or less 50 days if you do 1 fractal per day (or at least 50 hours if you do them 1 by 1 with pugs groups)… I bet you have enough time to farm for ascended items.
You just don’t want to, but hey, that’s your choice. If you don’t want to work hard for it, then don’t go to fractal lvl 50, nobody is forcing you to go there, you can just stay in pvp or whatever.

Exactly what i mean.
I play for fun. I don’t want work hard, absolutly not. I would like have access to everythings in this game after if you want do it easy take a better armor (like in wvw, pve).
Believe, they have their interest. Becouse wasn’t easier put some more monster or add some stat to them???

Ascended gear is not meant to be much more powerful than exotic. It’s meant as a means to hold agony resistance for Fractals and it just happens to be a little bit more powerful.

You want the gear that’s was designed to take TIME to get and put in to appease the crowd ASKING for a gear grind (while not angering the crowd going you better not add in a gear grind too much) to just be handed to you because you’ve played for X time?

So in Y time, you’re going to come onto the forum and ask that they hand you a legendary? Because you don’t have the time to run the dungeons for it. Or to the do the map completion. Or for the sheer amount of gold it would take to just buy it off of the trading post.

You want the gear to do Fractals 50? Work for it. No one is going to push a button or fiddle with the code to have the gear just suddenly appear in your inventory. Or give you the materials needed to craft it.

[Suggestion] Ingame message boards or forum.

ANet would still not let that be used to sell things. They will not let players advertise for non-TP sales. They don’t want to be seen condoning it by not stopping it when they see it.

Dungeon run sellers are still allowed to use the LFG to sell spots in their group. They are doing content.

I would imagine LFG’s for various different SW and DryTop maps are fine. Some want to chest train, others want to reach the final boss level. LFG lets the two groups keep as separated as is possible. And it’s a large group of people doing content, using the LFG to help segregate the different groups of open world players.

Guilds have map chat and the forums. And they are displayed by people’s names so if someone sees someone with a guild that is a friend they can ask about their guild. Likewise if someone in a guild sees someone without a guild, they are free to ask them if they want to be in a guild. LFG is not the place to advertise a guild.

Of course it IS how it works, more growth, more success, more issues, more complaints, and the solution IS … more customer service not just for the interim but in the future. In the future lordkrall would have us believe the nominal operations of customer service will not grow even as the consumer base grows two fold .. I guess you hope that it doesn’t grow and things get back to those good old days of yesteryear, but that’s not what will happen … more players will have issues, treating this as a minor “hic-cup” now only prolongs the inevitable, but let us be blinded by your myopic vision, concede that growth in the consumer base won’t bring a rise in tickets needed to be addressed in a timely manner, that every player will show the patience to understand that their issue will be handled by a minimal staff, overworked, and under appreciated … and just expect unusually long waits …

ArenaNet has a budget. One likely defined by NCSoft.

They get X amount of money to work with each year.

Part of it goes to the programmers who create the content. Part of goes to the group they have to play test. Part goes to the group who designs content for the Living Story and HoT. Part of goes to upper management (Colin, Mike, etc). Part of it goes to the gem store content creation team. Part of it goes to the site up keep (bandwidth, moderators, etc). Part of it goes to the Customer Service team.

They may be at the max number of CS agents they can have for the amount of money they can afford to give to CS. They may have asked NCSoft for more money or to borrow CS agents from a different division, but NCSoft may very well have turned them down. Because NCSoft has a budget as well.

Just because something is wanted or needed in a business, doesn’t mean you always get it. Because you have to prioritize your wants and needs in a business.

For example, I work retail and one of the department signs fell down in my store a year or so ago. It costs money to replace it. Money that we have to spend on other things. Like replenishing stock in our copy and print area. Or repairing equipment in the store. We can still direct people to the area. It takes longer since we can’t just say the name of the department. Yes, we’d love to replace it, but it’s not a high priority.

Please make content role friendly.

Policy on the LFG Tool

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seera.5916

Our policy: Players may use the LFG Tool only for the formation of a group.

I’m not going to nitpick because I’m as much against the trade LFGs as everyone else but the “sellers”. But technically, that highlighted policy bit also applies to trades; because they’re essentially forming a group too…

While we’re on topic of the LFG tool; could you please forward a concern that the category “Open world content” which really should hold the LFG ads pertaining to Living World or open world story content has become a “fall-back” for everyone advertising for groups.

It’s really pointless when I see ads in “open world content” stating “P1”…

Which means nothing to me when I’m standing in Silverwastes or Dry Top looking for a group in an instance going for Breach or T6 Dry Top. That “P1” doesn’t even state which dungeon it’s for…

Can you please cleanup the LFG categories, or at least make the Advertising a bit more detailed in that you choose a category for your ad?

The ones that say p1 in open world are lazy or made a mistake, but don’t want to risk getting locked out of LFG just to fix it.. There are clear cut dungeon sections.

Dungeon sellers are selling a spot in a group to do content. The content they do doesn’t last very long but it’s content nonetheless.

Sellers or Buyers of items are not forming groups to do content. So it is not permitted to post an LFG with the intent of finding a buyer or seller.

They do that so you may spend gems on other things. Like convenience items like the bank express or the revive orbs. To make you go ooo, I like that. I’ll buy gems more often to get them.

Or you can think of it like this: it’s a bundle that comes with keys plus X amount of gold depending on the gems to gold ratio. Convert the gems to gold and buy yourself something expensive off of the trading post. Like a mini or a rare dye. Make someone else’s day along with your own day because you can finally afford to buy it.

And if the bundles are 2100 keys, after every 7th time you buy the bundle, you can get an extra bundle.

I’d like them to be available outside of WvW, too. But I understand the reasoning. Some reason to go into WvW. A good compromise would be to let them be in more than one spot in WvW. Maybe same spot on all three Borderlands maps. That way it should theoretically be near your home base on some map.

Oh I do understand what I am being told.
I have been told that:
1. It´s just a few people, therefor a) it ain´t got a high priority, not for Anet and certainly not for people without connection problems and b) better a few can´t play instead of risking that others get problems. How egoistic is that?
2. It´s not sure if it is an ANet problem or if my ISP is in charge. I already talked several times to my ISP and complained. So why are you telling me not to complain if ANet doesn´t say a word about this problem for months?? Both took my money.

Okay, I am angry because most of the time I can´t play and no one is helping or even trying to fix it. But what makes me really upset is that people who should be so kitten glad being able to enjoy this game although they payed exact the same money like others, come here and tell me not to complain and just accept that it´s bad luck for me. That I just have to be silent and wait for more months.

Friendliest community, I would really like to hear what you would say, post or accept if it were you who couldn´t play for months.

Nowhere did I say it was better that a few don’t play rather than others. Please do not put words into my mouth that I did not say. Thank you.

If there is an external cause, which is possible if everyone is not experiencing the same issue, then there’s nothing ANet can really do.

If it is an internal cause, they don’t want to cause a bigger problem when trying to fix a problem. And that bigger problem could just mean more lag for those of you who are unable to play. Or increases the number of people affected.

And lag issues is something they likely have to gather data from over a period of days rather than instantly unlike game glitches. Just to make sure it wasn’t just a bad day for a node or something. So the process is slower than with other issues.

Not to mention the issue of trying to find the cause. The fewer people affected by it, the harder it is to find it.

Magically solved after several months? Well, if that is magic, then I call my self Copperfield.
They need to find the issue? They asked for logs months ago. They also said that they have tried several fixes but so far without success. So what do you think their fixes were? Beating up the Telekom guy?

Besides all that, it´s nothing new for the “minorities of unlucky connection people”, we got that at release, we got it now and we got it in between.

But I´m really happy for you, that you dont have issues or in case I´m wrong then at least don´t seem to bother. Who cares about that 50-100-? guys that can´t enjoy the game. Just minorities. In a big game of happy people.

The thing is, the fixes they put in to help you guys, may cause other issues for other people. So they can’t just try things just to try them. They have to balance that with the chances of it causing problems for others.

And if the problem is affecting so few people compared to the total number of players, it’s probably like trying to find a needle in a haystack to find the problem or even fix it.

Apart from wvw, it doesnt matter on which server you are because you can guest.

Well let me add a caveat that the guild must be of a specified size, say 300 members or more. I realize having your buddy create a personal storage guild just to bypass the transfer fee is not what I had in mind. And I think waiting a month to transfer servers, if you can avoid the costs is not unreasonable.

It would still be abused.

People would join non-100% rep guilds to do it.

Servers would have guilds with 300 people who just never represent for recruitment purposes.

My original post takes this into account, you could not just be a member of a guild, you would have to rep that guild and demonstrate contribution to that guild, which the easiest measure of that would be influence created.

But guilds define contribution differently.

The social member who most spends their time in Lion’s Arch making friends, answering questions, and indirectly recruiting may contribute just as much as the guild mission players for a more casual guild. But not be considered contributing for a more hard core guild.

And if it was up to the guilds, the players would choose the guilds with lower contribution standards. And then once they transfer over, they leave the guild.

Few questions.

I put a mobile authenticator on my account and it’s not something that you can do accidentally. Since you have to have an authenticator app on your phone and you have to run through a test authentication to make sure the system is working correctly.

First thing he should do is close down ALL duplicate tickets. Every time he submits a new one it sends him to the back of the queue. Duplicate tickets slow the process down for everyone. Just have him reply to the automated response saying that the ticket was a duplicate and can be closed.

Once 7 days has passed, the ticket number of the remaining ticket can be posted in the stick in this section. They are swamped due to the sale and due to the expansion announcement bringing in new players and old players are returning.

Hard Drive only malfunctions with Guild Wars

Well, if GW2 caused that kind of issue, you would see more posts saying the same thing as you.

Hard drives once they start going bad, keep going bad. Your GW2 data may have landed in a good sector a few days ago and now that sector is going bad.

I will say what LyricDwanhagen said again because it is worth repeating.

Back up your data. Anything you do not want to lose.

Have traits been fixed yet?

“Something” is going to be done “soon”.

I’m putting more trust in ANet since the HoT announcement, but the traits issue seems to be something they’re determined to throw away good will with. Ten months of a core system change that most people who’ve commented on hate, and we still don’t know what the solution or expected fix date is.

They are fixing traits with HoT. When you hear release date for that, you’ll know when traits will be fixed.

But what happens if a chosen person develops a grudge on someone?

Who do you choose? You can’t use someone who does dungeon runs, they may be friends with potential rule breakers. That creates a conflict of interest.

You also can’t use those who don’t run dungeons. They don’t know the mechanics or what is vs what isn’t an exploit. And even then they may be friends with the dungeon runners who violated a rule.

And then there are the people who think that anyone who kicks them is violating a rule, even if they joined a group that they know they didn’t meet the requirements of.

Should ANet fully Beta test HoT b4 Release?

Just to be clear, you realize they will beta test the game no matter what right?
I think what you mean to ask is if they’ll open beta to the public, whether through an open beta or by some more selective process.

Nope! i don’t mean an open beta. I mean as i say. & yes, they prolly are beta testing the game prior to it’s release. But what i’m suggestion as you can properly read on my question, are they going to do it extensively with more then 1000 playtesters to make sure the game is fun? Why is that not clear?

I beta tested a few games. And 1000 play tester isn’t a lot. Most of the time, those player tester barely spend any time on the beta test server. They only go there to check what’s new, or see if there’s some economy change they can profit from, and that’s it. And the rest of the time, they rather spend on the live server.

Unless those 1000 tester are selected either because they actaully paid money, or they are from writers or bloggers etc. Most of them wont’ bother to test the game extensively.

I would say an open beta for a few weeks is much more helpful.

Yea, your size has to be large enough to account for the percentage that won’t provide feedback for whatever reason. They just want early access or they want to profit off of future changes or whatever.

Mark II possibly.

But I know Shatterer has failed pre-megaserver due to too few people. I’d imagine Claw would as well. Just due to the timer they have.

I still say they should leave one dragon for the casual group that doesn’t do Teamspeak, doesn’t care nor wants to have any build but that which they choose and their build may not be anywhere near good for a boss like Teq or Triple. At least with Jormag, they can’t be AFK for it.

And the bosses do already sometimes overlap. The Hard core bosses always overlap with another world boss.

In just 35 minutes both Shatterer and Tequatl will be up.

Every 15 minutes a world boss on the timer spawns. Every 15 minutes.

No matter what is done, there will ALWAYS be a boss that doesn’t spawn during someone’s play time. The game should not be catered to the people who have limited play time for every little thing. Heck, the bosses being on a timer is in their advantage as they know when it’s coming up and don’t spend 2 hours waiting during the boss’s window like was done before the megaserver.

The ONLY way to cater to them is to have every boss spawn at the exact same time right after each other. That way no one will ever miss it. It just died? Well, wait 2 minutes and it will spawn again. That’s the only way to ensure that every boss is available to everyone no matter what time they can play.

And I’m sure you can agree that the bosses should not all have a constant, I’m always spawned state.

There is a level filter. Click the little gear button on the left side of the panel and it will open up the filters.

Level and even stat filters are there if you’re looking for a specific stat.
