I’m excited for rifle! I have a Charzooka in my bank waiting just in case.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
For S/D there isn’t really much wiggle room in terms of build. The most effective is the current one posted on metabattle.com.
It recommends Runes of Str, but as those are extremely costly on the TP, and almost impossible to find on your own, you might want to try using Runes of the Ogre instead.
When I run this build I use Signet of Agility and Infiltrator’s Signet, as the Signet of Agility adds 9.5% chance to crit passively, and a condition cleanse actively. I use this over shadowstep because I can’t yet personally immediately use shadowstep when stunned. (by the time I get around to activating it and placing the ground target, I’m the stun duration is just about up). So I find the passive 9.5% crit chance and 1-click 1-condi removal more valuable to my playstyle.
As D/D you probably didn’t use Withdraw – I tend to use it on cooldown (15s) once my hp drops to 75%. Since S/D fights last a bit longer than bursty D/D or D/P, I find it better to use our short cooldown heal as soon as my hp drops to 3/4, so I can use it sooner during the fight if I run out of dodges/initiative and get hit hard. (Always having your hp filled demoralizes as well and increases your opponents frustration and chance to mess up due to that)
Hope this helps a little!

Wish I was with the savages down in the lower tiers so I wouldn’t have to moan and cry and whine so much.
Aw, its ok buddy! You can always transfer to us!
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I think its a great change because I never had stability to begin with!
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Its not the same. Food buffs can have a significant effect on some builds and very little on others. I earned this ascended gear and i want to play with it not some amulet that doesn’t equal it and isnt offered in all stat combinations.
I read this as “I don’t like an even playing field, I played World of Gearcraft and I want to replicate my superior gear killing undergeared players in GW2”

Hey come play massive combat WvW with no to a few other players!
Brilliant solution! I know when I go to play massive combat WvW I want the last possible number of people I can run into. That’s exactly what I look for.
Also waiting in queue has never been that bad cause it means you know there will be action there. It’s like waiting in line to get into a bar. Sure I could go to any dive bar and get in instantly or I could wait a bit and get into that hot new night club instead. It’s generally worth the wait.
Aren’t “nightclubs” where losers wait outside the doors with their fake friends for hours, just so they can get in and order overpriced mediocre drinks and offer them to other fake people who are just there for the smidgeon of a chance to bring home a girl or guy for an awkward sexual encounter to regret the next day?
Yeah, down here in T8, the lowest on the ladder, Sorrow’s Furnace – we actually got a queue (6players) the other day, although most of the time there is no queue, but always action. Usually many solo roamers, some groups of 3-5 roamers battling other equal sized roaming groups, and a zerg of about 10-15 taking towers and keeps/battling another zerg of similar size per BL.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I feel like this trait doesn’t give as much speed as it says it does. I have nothing to back this up, but still feel like my speed after stealthing does not change, nor can I see a noticeable difference in run speed after stealth wears off.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I’m sure there is something in the matchmaking that does account fro this, but just like MMR it stops caring after it starts taking too long to find the appropriate match. Would you rather have 10 minute queue times for your perfect queue, or 2 minute queue pops with the occasional duplicate profession?
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Anet does play WvW. Theres one on my server that joins our zerg every now and then.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I don’t understand why anyone could be upset with this. Oh no! Now everyone has to do the same amount of work as …everyone! Just like before the patch.
The only thing that’s happening here is that ANET made it easier to get map completion. I play the game equal parts PvE, PvP, and WvW. No one is forcing you to play pure WvW or pure PvE or pure PvP, and if you do – that’s your problem. Stop whining and crying, nobody has more of an advantage than anyone else.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I assume you’re suggesting this so that they might be recharged when steal is traited to recharge all of a utility category. But really, we don’t need to be able to heal or use daggerstorm more often, that would be kinda broken.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
You have to be careful with p/d as if you have a shot in the air as you are stealthing, the second it hits it will reveal you.
Example: You shoot, then immediately hit blinding powder. You are stealthed for a brief moment, but then the shot that was travelling through the air now hits the target – which acts as if you just attacked while in stealth, even though you loosed the shot before you stealthed. Thus – revealed.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Oh gosh, no need to use [Blinding Powder] on you, Tempest. It must be hard – playing this game using only braille.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Thief receives hate because:
- At a low level, thief counters every berserker build for every other class easily, and I mean pop in, swing your weapon about a bit and they drop – literally, easy.
- Thieves are hard to kill because they escape. Even if chasing someone off means you won, people like to get kills, so they complain.
– In tPvP, thief is only really countered by itself. It may have difficult matchups, but it’s role as being quick and sneaky to get decaps can only be countered by another mobile, aware, player.
- Thieves survive by blinding and evading, and having your hits miss often is annoying, so people complain.
- Thieves are designed to be able to adapt. People don’t like to adapt, they just want to be able to win “their way,” so they complain.
- Thieves can dissapear. People don’t like having their target vanish, so they complain.
-Thieves steal things. People like their things not being stolen, they paid good money for it. :C

Crossbow.
(Message Body length must at least be 15)
1 Hand crossbows. So we can dual-wield.
And of course they shoot lightnig-fire shurikens instead of the typical bolts.
That explode into jellybeans and marshmallows on impact.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
‘You do not agree with my ignorant views so thou be a troll.’
Lmao.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Sure lemme just Warrior GS#5 5 times in a row.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
you seem rather dedicated to P/P even though that weapon kit is the exact opposite of what you want out of the class, it’s kit has absolutely 0 mobility and 0 escapes. idk why your making a thread about it since you clearly already have your mind made up.
if you want a solid evade build though it won’t be with P/P so if you want my advice, make your pick, keep pistol as you main kit an have fun with 0 mobility. or use it as a secondary kit with S/D or something and at least be able to be somewhat mobile.
Runewolf has a point, when you first posted this thread, you definitely mentioned you were most excited about the mobility, acrobatics and constant motion that the Thief profession has to offer. P/P is very fun, imo, but it just does not have the movement that the other weaponkits have! Maybe you were drawn into the profession by the mobility, but fell in love with the prospect of being a gung-ho bullet-thrower like me. ;3

According to #22 on the Rules of Conduct, it doesn’t allow skyhammer rank farm servers.
“Match manipulation is defined as any action taken to fix or manipulate the outcome of a match or alter or manipulate the rankings or ratings of the ladder.” – notice the or that is repeated over and over, which tells you that this does not pertain only to rated/ranked/ladder play, but any PvP gameplay.
They must not have the manpower to enforce it, unfortunately.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
This practice rewards players who aren’t participating in the fundamental action that the rewards are derived from. Its cheating and absolutely unfair to players who work to receive the same rewards.
This is something that’s against the ToS in almost every PvP style mmo, though I’m not sure if it is against the rules in GW2. Very well should be if it isn’t.
Edit: I’m not sure if this is referring to Structured Player vs. Player, or just any Player vs. Player game-play in general, but this is an excerpt copied directly from the Rules of Conduct for GW2 –
—22.While participating in Plaver-vs-Player (PvP) gameplay, you will not participate in any form of match manipulation. Match manipulation is defined as any action taken to fix or manipulate the outcome of a match or alter or manipulate the rankings or ratings of the ladder. This also includes disrupting other people’s game experience by not actively participating in matches in good faith, a.k.a leeching.

Ah, but that’s the problem. It does not say doubled, it says increased.
Increased implies that there was a cooldown on the skill in the first place.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
A good combo for Charr heavy armor is Braham’s shoulderpiece used in conjunction with regular old Scallywag armor. Totally BAMF
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Let’s make our own. I’ll start—-
“It all started when a Charr fell in love with an Asura…”
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
If you’re enjoying P/P, try giving 46004 a try. Gives you ricochet, executioner, and all the +combo-skill traits you’d need for damage.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
It makes perfect sense to me, and pretty much everyone else who’s laughing at’cha. I haven’t made any claims of my own, but rather have been pointing out that your fellow thieves do not agree with you – and for some reason you think every single one of them is wrong and you are right.
You came here to vent, hoping others would back you up and vent with you. When they did not… you made a fool of yourself and are continuing to make a fool of yourself, even after other thieves have been giving you logical and heartfelt constructive feedback.
What are the odds that all of them are wrong and you are right? But please, continue telling us how its impossible to play our profession in ways that we are playing every day.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
If you were to implement stealth-discovering mechanics that derive from other games, you would also have to implement permanent stealth “until broken by attacking” from other games. Do you really want thieves to be in stealth from the moment they step into the map to the moment they attack?
And please don’t say free perma-stealth is already a thing, because it most definitely isn’t.
Edit: In response to OP, DAoC doesn’t allow you to see friendly/enemy stealth “after a while.” It lets you see it if you are within a couple of feet, and actually facing the direction of the assassin or archer. —- Which would be ridiculous to try to implement in GW2 where a majority of the time stealth happens when you are already fighting within melee range of enemies.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
(edited by Turk.5460)
Anyone remember 2handed shadowblades in daoc?
Well yeah, but every Midgard melee class could 2h if they felt like it! Even Healers and Shaman! Do you remember BladeShades? I do! So….my vote is for Offhand Sword!
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
But we come here for comic relief! We can’t just let a free stand-up show pass us by!
??Keep dishing out that comedy gold, you marvelous person. ??
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
The past few Vinewrath events have failed that I’ve been a part of. Most of the map was a blame fest afterwards (and during). I’m pretty new to the event chain in Silverwastes, but from what I gathered from map chat each time we failed, was that too many people go south, so they can AFK after their lane is finished, and because of that, not enough people went mid or north.
I was mid-lane both times, and I gotta say it was rough, but it looked like we had enough people there. (about 12-15, though south seemed to have over 30)
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Is there any use for Bloodstone Dust/Emp Frags/Dragonite Ore- besides ascended crafting? I’ve probably destroyed well over 5000 of each in the last month ‘cause I just don’t have the bank space!
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Eventually we can just agree with all of this guy’s posts, and he’ll probably continue to quote and “counter” our posts, blissfully unaware of his own foolishness.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Do you happen to have the “Hidden Thief” traited? It might be possible if you do, you’re getting stealth immediately when you steal, but don’t notice it because you attack right away, then when you go to use blinding powder you might still have a second of Reveal on.
Otherwise I have no idea and its probably a bug x3
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Bear in mind that the other teams may have inexperienced/new players as well as their verteran players. Their vets could just be more of a game-face on than the vets you’re paired with. Not ALL of your matches couldn’t have been either 100% newbies or 100% experienced on a team! Keep at it and get that game count above 100 and you’ll start seeing a more fair playing field.
But also remember, nothing is stopping a very skillful, very hardened player from grouping up with a newbie, thrilled that their friend is giving GW2 a chance and playing their very best to give their buddy a good first impression of PvP.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I agree with the OP. I want to fight other players, not walls or doors.
That’s what sPvP is for. WvW =/= PvP, sorry.
PvP gear choices suck. Much less ways to customize and fine-tune your builds.
Also only certain specs even work there. Cele engi/ele make most builds useless, and the gameplay is stale and boring. Two years of capture point would make anybody bored, for me only a couple hours a month is enough.I hope you’re not one of those guys who run around EotM thinking it’s wvw?¨
edit: my post looks much more offensive than i intended it to be. It’s just that i saw another post of yours on a thread, and you were asking what PPT is. I thought if you’re new to wvw you might just have played EotM with a fight-avoiding commander who only wants to karma train, thinking this is how wvw is everywhere and is supposed to be.
Although I’ve never been to EotM, it’s true, I’m new to WvW. But I still know that the OP is talking purely about WvW, and was frustrated in some way that WvW was not just large-mapped versions of sPvP, and seemed to think that it was meant to be a larger version of sPvP rather than what it it actually is. Which is not true at all. I disagree, WvW in its current state is exactly what it’s supposed to be.
The people I was targeting in my reply seem to want no keeps, no siege, just big open field deathmatches, which is not what WvW is about at all. I didn’t mean to have my short reply to be condescending, though I stand by what I was trying to say. WvW isn’t PvP, its World vs World.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I agree with the OP. I want to fight other players, not walls or doors.
That’s what sPvP is for. WvW =/= PvP, sorry.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
How’s your survivability in that? I’m gonna assume you use withdrawl rather than hide in shadows. Do you play it like people play that condition spike p/d build? Just CnD then Sneak attack whenever you can?
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I hope you guys like stories -
~This is a heartbreaking tale of a community of Thieves trying to help another Thief who just-doesn’t-get it. Some of his brothers are harshly criticizing their inexperienced colleague, others taking a more matronly tone, trying to nurture the young Thief’s growth. But alas, he just didn’t get it.
The End.~
A masterpiece! Symbolism! Coming of age! Action! Love! Soon to be a major motion picture playing on an Aetherblade Holocoder near you!
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Tempest, I don’t think a single person in this thread has supported you or the major points you have stated, other than lightly agreeing with some of the Thief weaknesses.
Instead of taking the most helpful responses and constructive criticism and reflecting upon them, you have been immediately denying their validity, quoting every counter points responding each time with what seems to be longer versions of “NO YOU ARE WRONG”
An overwhelming majority of this thread and subforum disagree with you. Have you once considered that maybe they have valid points themselves?
Stop being blinded by your pride.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Sorrow’s Furnace is always looking for help! We are very low on the ladder, which should be great for your stated expectations! Lower tier servers have more friendly players, not elitist jerks who won’t give you the time of day. It also means that the battles aren’t a blob of one hundred players vs. keep door. More commonly if there is open field combat, its on a much (more exciting) smaller scale.
Although often it is not even, battles being 5 vs 8, or 10 vs 15. This may seem daunting to think about, as it was for me at first, but actually experiencing it you’ll quickly realize its not over in a heartbeat just because you’re outnumbered. We win more than our fair share of outnumbered fights!

Dark Age of Camelot

Asura because they are the best at everything including fashion(totally important :P)
I may or may not be a biased asura fan…
Fashion? Bah, Asura are a waste of armor when it comes to that! (unless you just care about only you seeing your fashionable character). I am Charr, and everyone sees what I’m wearing quite clearly! All you shorties look the same from up here.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
What is PPT? I’m very new to WvW and since you mentioned that a lot in your post, I feel like its something I should probably know… <:C
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I’m not sure what portion of that scenario you’re frustrated about. Are you talking about the double-tap to dodge messing up your whirlwind from the stolen axe? If so, you can turn off double-tap dodges using the game settings.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I always find it kinda weird when some players try to press their logic surrounding a role of a profession in this game – based on our current real-world conception of the profession’s name – during a time period from our real-world past.
Scoundrels, loners, assassins all in our current time have used long-guns, so whose to say that those types from a fictional game- which has teleportation portals, levitating furniture technology, and laser cannons – would not use big shooty pew-pew machines?
*not really a reply to anyone in general, just the first thing that came to mind after drifting loosely through this big thread

If so, please share what weapons and utilities worked out for you! I know thieves are generally meant to be quick-bursters and acrobatic dodge-masters in sPvP, and I’ve had great success and fun trying out all of those berserker-style builds. I’m also aware of the pistol-dagger condition build, but it doesn’t suit my personal style currently.
That being said, I’d like to see if anyone has not only had fun, but also have been moderately successful in winning fights or at least still inflicting ample damage while using something more like Soldier or Valkyrie stats.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
I can’t really help you for the most part of your post, since I’m only slightly more experienced than you, but I will offer this response to your confusion on the length of stealth at the end:
In PvP things get much more exciting, but also sometimes disorienting for inexperienced players. I’ve thought the same about other thieves stealth when I first started out in PvP/WvW, but the more I played, the more I realized that it just seems like it lasts longer because the action is so fast paced – and when the enemy disappears, those few seconds of nothing, anticipating a stealth-attack, not knowing whats happening next – feels like it takes an eternity.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
Is it possible he had the trait “Hard to Catch” – which shadowsteps 600 units away when you are disabled, even if you are downed? If so, the shadowstep for that trait ignores barriers and boundaries, including teleporting you a “floor” (ledge nearby, etc) up, as well as downwards or through the walls of a building.
