Which class has the highest burst damage in the first 5-6 seconds of the fight?
I tried to find similar threads but they were all out-dated.
PS: Assuming all classes have pre-stacked might, so access to might is not something to consider.
The thief one is ridiculous. Crits should hit for what? 20k? … sure…
@Thaddeus, the link you posted is saying June 2014. The ballance patch of September changed a lot. Ranger’s dps went up by 15% flat amount. Engi’s dps went up as well, not sure the exact numbers, while warriors dps dropped.
Please post the list of yours that has guardian that low in DPS and thief above ele.
Ya the list of Yelloweyedemon don’t seem legit.
True thief can have better dps than Ele against a small single-target (where meteor shower and ice bow are not that good), but still. In most situation the Ele will be ahead.
Guardian do more dps than ranger and Warrior since the last patch. Guardian are Warrior were pretty close before, with the guardian doing more dps in some situation only. But since the last nerf to the warrior, guardian went ahead.
That 4 warrior + 1 mesmer is about 2 years old. It was the meta so long ago, but it’s not anymore.
The tests were made by DnT after the september ballance patch. Link here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2gol18/dps_ranking/
Eeh, you can’t make a list having “weakest weapons” and not specifying what game-mode.
PvE? WvW? PvP? …
Anyways, I’m gonna comment on the class I know the most: To all those saying about ranger shortbow/GS/Axe, they are far from weak.
Shortbow is very decent for condi build as secondary weapon.
Greatsword is excellent for open world since its basically pure power weapon with one of the best blocks in-game. It’s also very good in dungeons when fighting many targets at once.
Axe: main hand is still very good for condi builds especiallly in sPvP. Off hand is the current default meta… you can’t really say it’s bad… lol. It also has the ranger’s highest damage ability…
The real weak weapon for rangers is Warhorn. The skill #4 is a waste of time and dps, while the skill #5 has an insanely lond cd for buffs, a decent party will have anyways.
For PvP, skill #4 remains useless, and it’s actually dangerous since if the enemy gets retal. then RIP. While #5 is kinda waste since you should be running Rampage as one for furry/stab
@OP: Having more than 1 warrior is considered a dps loss. I don’t think any serious speedclear groups will take 2 warriors. Having said that, warriors are the easiest class to play, and it makes excellent stackable class for pugs, because of different buffs. (Different banners between them).
For speedclearing serious group, generally speaking, the best setup is:
Guard,Warr,Ele,Thief,Ranger. (There can be specific exceptions to the list depending what you doing)
Also, if we take into account party DPS, ranger + warrior should have better overall output than two warriors despite war’s damage being superior to that of ranger, because two different classes can stack more boons and modifiers than two people playing the same class.
So what’s right? What’s the class DPS ranking in optimal PvE situation? And is it better to go just straight for 5 war or 4 war + 1 random party or mix it up a bit more thoughtfully?Actually ranger has better DPS than warrior does by a bit.
AFAIK the order is:
Elementalist
Thief
Guardian
Engineer
Ranger
Warrior
Mesmer/NecroNot entirely sure if guardian is ahead of engineer actually. They’re close.
The list from updated charts after the september ballance patch is:
Thief
Ele
Engi
Ranger
Warr
Guard
Mesm
Necro
There’s nothing in the world more fitting than the first two albums of Crimson Glory, for playing Mesmer.
Those guys even wore theater masks in the early years.
I suggest listening to Lost Reflection and Masque of Red Death
Staff ele earth attunement autoattack offers 100% projectile finisher for example.
“But mooooom! If ele is going to have one, I want one too!”
They first need to fix necromancers for PvE, as its the only class that has no role in meta dungeon runs.
For PvP/ WvW, good necros are in a very good place.
PS: @yellowdemon
ranger has better dps and comaprable dps-buffing utilities, if the sword auto chain wasn’t as whacky as it is they’d be much more popular in dugneons. also they have the polar opposite of what makes warrior desirable. bad players can fail on a ranger REALLY hard, all it takes is poor pet aggro management.
engi has an amount of support that warriors can’t even get close to, condi removal, healing, reflections/blocks, might stacking, vuln stacking even stealth all in one package. it just takes a decent player to make good use of it.
I don’t know much about engi (just the basics) so I’ll pass on that.
About rangers, since I main one, yesrangers have better dps, but still can’t compare it to 2 banner warrior. I agree with what you said, bad players do fail on rangers, very much. Although ranger is not a stackable class. If you have 1 ranger on your group, a second one will be 100% waste of slot. While you can have 2 and sometimes 3 warriors (not saying its good, but it does work very decently).
What I’m saying is that for a class with that many amount of buffs, and desirability, it would be silly to have one of the best dps’s on the game as well.
In the end, every speedrun group will have a warrior. You can have a ranger, and it does help, but it is not nessessary unless you wanna do world records.
I’m not hating on warriors or something, but I think after 2 years, warriors are now more ballanced than ever (PvE).
Yes it’s awesome! Serious guilds will fight eachother about who will take you to their group!
In every speedclear there’s at least 1-3 bearbows with 2k toughness and 2.4k healing power. That’s just way too good to pass.
Here we go again…
I think they need to sticky some of Anet’s answers to the ranger forum, like “L2P with sword” “Pet is NOT going away”, “bears are for pr0s”.
For a gajillion time: Ranger is a PET class. No there won’t be a perma stow option. You can controll your pet with F3-F1. It’s also recomended that you use transformation tonics for trash skipping in situations like Arah orrian eyes or TA, so that your pet will not make a mess trigerring everything.
Please do not create new threads for issues that have been discussed SO many times over those 2 years…
If you are relying on pet in order to win 1v1 you are doing it wrong. If you are full BM, and the pet is still doing nothing, you are doing it wrong again.
PS: Agility Training. The amount of rangers slotting it is too kitten low. (And I prefer to keep it that way cause eezy killz!)
Ranger builds with bear pets on passive is such OP
Warriors are now more ballanced than ever. They still are most desired in groups, either for casual runs, or speedruns. They are awesome stackable class, and very very easy to play.
No they don’t need a dps buff, when they have that amount of support. Why should warriors do more damage than an engi or ranger when they have already better support buffs for the group? What would be the reason to play other classes then?
Because every patch should have WvW included

Made my day
Have you tried to stab a wall with a broken beer bottle in real life?
EotM should be removed from the game entirelly or massively revamped. 99.9% of it’s playerbase are mindless upscaled characters, following a commander zerging PvE “bosses” while avoiding the other 2 teams with any means nessessary.
As a low lvl character, I don’t like farming the same stuff over and over to gain lvl’s. I’d rather grab a friend and do PvE stuff where we could have a bit of fun.
As a lvl 80 char, the only reason I see in going EotM, is because I’m bored of the other 2 WvW map designs. Having said that, as a solo roamer, 90% of the enemies you wil find will be upscaled chars running away, 8% lvl 80 chars running away, and the rest 2% will be players like you who roaming in EotM because they are terribly bored.
Is this working as intended?
What are your thoughts?
Yes it’s WAI.
Not sure what more to add? Every class has a powerfull downed skill, rangers have that. And no, you can’t interrupt the skill with a single use of CC that would be stupid. You can interrupt the pet, but after CC ends, it will continue to heal.
If it’s a pvp/wvw issue, then use your brain and don’t let a downed ranger heal.
Instead of having people in the forum asking to fix things that need fixing, we have the majority asking to buff a GS because we can’t learn to evade with sword and we are too lazy to practice.
It’s funny because the sword AA is fantastic in PvP. Nobody is going to get away from you.
Originally I made this thread to see if I could use GS exclusively but after practicing with it in PvE since this thread was open I find myself very comfortable with my sword and actually enjoying the dynamicism of it far more than most other weapons.
But you have to admit it would be easier if you stayed here asking for GS to get on-par with sword. Right? * looks at “some” people *
lol
Because our sword is something…special as u all know. Rangers should have a real choice.
You see this is why I never pug with rangers… This is why the class’ reputation is so low.

Excuse my lore noobishness, but I have a question. The pact went and set camp in Silverwastes along with dudes from all races to fight Mordr. etcetc…
Why our character along with the two ladies went to Durm. Priory to Glint’s lair to find the vision of the egg? I mean yes a dragon egg is kinda important.. but shouldn’t we be fighting more Mordrem things?
Every spirit except frost, has a 10 sec recharge meaning you can get the buffs only once every 10 secs.
We all know em but I think many people are confused about which ones really are actually hard counters

once you’re done with all that you’re welcome to join in on the discussion of hard counters
The only way someone would think that guard hard counters a thief, is if he played a d/d setup with zerker/glass build.
“In order to improve the experience to Guild Wars 2 players, we have decided to remove the ranger class from the game. We felt that having 8 classes in the game was too complicated for newer players to handle, and also balancing 7 classes is much easier
and lazierthan balancing 8. We hope you will enjoy these new exciting changes and do leave your feedback in the forumsso it can grow to 100 pages and we won’t read it.. Meanwhile, get ready for a new exciting purchase in the gem store that will allow you to unlock the Ranger class again!”
They should really do that with necro. Upon unlock from gemstore there should be a message saying: “Attention! This class is useless in PvE and you will be kicked out from experienced groups”.

Okay to all those who support the OP’s idea:
MMO rule #1 – If instead if toning down some skills/things etc, you are buffing everything else, you lose contact with the world around you, causing people to be able to faceroll any PvE content, to the point of playing naked.
Source: Long time MMO history of: WoW, RIFT, LOTRO, SWTOR, etc etc…
We’ve always been able to do that. I’ve solod Arah P3 naked a year ago and I was much worse of a player than I am now.
I’m talking about actual soloing, not dungeon skipping. In many of the games I mentioned, you can solo a dungeon/instance, the way it’s meant to be played anyways. If you did that in GW2 you would be killed over and over again by 1 illusionist. Not to mention that you would spend hours upon hours. So soloing Arah p3 has nothing really to do with what I’m saying.

ranger, especially power ranger is not even a meta profession.
and ranger at all is the most weak profession again at the moment.but anet nerf the ranger again.
and buff ele and engi.
verry interesting.of course it happend again because the forum is full of ranger hating persons.
but when warriors running completly broken around for almost 1 year it’s not a huge problem.
it’s seems to be also ok to let celestial d/d eles running completly broken overpowered around for the next year i guess.
not to forget s/d thief and the steal on thief generally, everyting completly fine.
but when a beastmaster ranger build was viable for some month in the verry past, of course it was important to instantly nerf it to become completly useless.
same for spirit ranger. (got even much nerfs when warrior was completly broken op and warrior was not touched by nerfs in this time)as main ranger player you will never get something good for this profession.
just to less peoples play this profession as main.
much peoples don’t want to face a ranger or even still don’t know the traits of this profession and play in good tpvp teams…says much about the knowledge about this profession in this game.
nobody cares.
Power ranger is the weakest profession atm? Apparently there’s a universal game mode which includes open world PvE, sPvP, tPvP, WvW(roaming), WvW (zerging), dungeon and fracts.
Awesome!
PS: Not that the rest of the post made any kind of sense but oh-well.
You are all saying the same thing, and this thread is a simillar thread to all the “ranger sword AA” threads that have been here from the beginning.
YES, the sword is an awkward weapon to use (at least at the beginning when you start playing ranger). That does NOT mean it is broken. You can’t call something broken just because you don’t like it. Broken is something when it creates problems to your playstyle, and there’s nothing you can do about it. With sword, you can do much about it. The fact that every boss in the game can be melee’d by ranger sword proves that it is a player issue and not a weapon/game issue.
Can you dodge while jumping? — No
Can you reposition yourself while jumping? — No
Can you cancel the AA while jumping? — No
Can you cleave reliably? — No
Do you push the enemy slowly but steadily back? — Yes
5 Arguments against the current AA chain. Can you keep up with your enemy? — Yes
1 Argument for the current AA chain.
Just that PvE bosses don’t even run away from you in the first place.
So it’s broken because it’s not how you want it to be. This is what this thread is all about.
I’m not gonna reply anymore. Feel free to complain more about it because you don’t like it and it does not have many similarities with other class melee weapons.
Threads and issues like that is why rangers have such a terrible reputation in this game.
Cyas and have fun!
PBS got nerfed? Are you trolling? The only “nerf” was that they added an animation which changes nothing. The skill is still 1/2 induction which is not enough for someone to react, especially when done at range. If your oponent evades PBS, he will have 1 evade less for the skill he wanted to evade in the first place (aka RF).
So stop QQ’ing and play the game instead.

I’m not calling people that can’t use sword n00bs, but don’t expect that you will roll a ranger and you will be the very best like none ever was, in 5 dungeons time. It takes time. If you want facerolling roll a warrior.
Here’s my list and reasons:
TOP TIER
1.) The Guardian
-Heart of the party, most reliable reflects and defensive options without sacrificing damage (reflects, aegis, party healing). Some fights with high projectile counts (i.e. Bloomhunger, Harpy Fractal, Grawl Shaman Frac 50) are downright nightmares without a guard.2.) The Warrior (DPS)
Highest melee dps in the game, insane buffs with indestructible banners that skyrockets the party killing power. Also able to party save and boost the group damage to 20-25+ might with Warbanner, the best PvE elite in the game.3.) The Elementalist (Support)
-Single best support class in the game. Most reliable might stacker, high area damage, conjure frost bow is the best area aoe and structure destroyer in the game. Can grant more boons and auras than any other class.MID TIER:
4.) The Ranger (DPS)
Very high sword melee dps. Best water field in the game. Decent damage boosters with frost spirit and spotter. Spirit of Nature is very strong in PvE. Overshadowed by warrior due to indestructable banners and the ranger’s reliance on pets. Pet insufficiency is mitigated somewhat if using drakes, which do decent damage, blast on fields, and have strong F2s. Drakes also redirect enemy damage to themselves due to high toughness in comparison to the rest of the group, some bosses can be drake tanked.5.) Mesmer (Support)
Good portal skipping tricks, strong damage when traited right + reflects and support. Also has the second best PvE elite next to warbanner (Timewarp). Substitute support for the ele, which is better in all realms of support and damage.6.) Thief (Damage/Support)
Good sword damage but high risk. Stealth allows for mass skipping and sometimes entire segment skipping (such as CM). Limited tricks outside of basic weapon skills but best blast finisher in the game (cluster bomb). Overshadowed by the mesmer and the ele. Both are better choices.LOW TIER:
7.) Engineer (Damage/Support)
Good area damage with grenades and limited stealth. Can stack decent vul but has semi-dependency on conditions (most of which are overshadowed by the guardian’s 100% burning uptime). Good blast finishers, limited usefulness of utility skills and kits. No good PvE Elites, grenades have a low rate of fire and lose damage because of how long they are airborne.NECROMANCER:
8.) Necromancer (No PvE Use)
By far the weakest class. Heavily condition dependent. Minions are useless in PvE with lack of good targeting and focus fire options. What useful power skills that they have (Lich, Wells) are on high CDs. No good autoattack options that hit multiple targets. Terrible aoe outside of wells. Needs serious PvE help.
This is wrong in so many levels, no offence
Its true function is not everyday skill equipped on bar. Its for killing the bouncy bouncy troll thief who is begging to get gunned down with the longbow.
Exactly. There’s hardly any counter for stealth in this game. People who want revealed duration to be nerfed either don’t play PvP or are just main thieves mesmers.

Yeah remove mesmers’ illusionary wave too. That’s about 5x worse but thankfully mesmers are rare.
Or warriors hammer whirly knockback skill.
Or guardians hammer launch, so annoying when trying to stomp.
Or necros fear mark.
Those classes player bases don’t seem to be confused about the appropriate uses of those skills.
Inexperienced players don’t know how to use their class correctly, so you seriously suggest to remove their options.
You must be a pretty awesome player yourself as well^^
I see it most consistently with rangers.
Basically if I see a ranger with a longbow out in a PVE zone I pretty much assume they’re the kind of player the NPE was designed for, just my experience with them.
And because of that you are posting on ranger forum that a very usefull skill should be removed because you don’t like it. As I said, you must be beyond awesome!

I’m finding that a lot of rangers don’t know when to appropriately use their longbow #4 knockback skill, and tend to use it off cooldown, even if it knocks the enemy out of dozens of aoe fields from other players. They must be confused by the complexity of the ranger class and have information overload by having an attack that has the ability to reposition enemies where desired.
In the spirit of the New Player Experience™, perhaps the knockback portion of the skill can be reworked into an immobilize effect, or removed altogether to make the skill less confusing for the ranger playerbase.
You know you can always ask for experienced players on pug groups. Even then, there’s the kick button.
Assuming you are talking hypothetically, because the difference between GS and S/A is as we said before about 17% and not 5…
The last numbers he gives places traited GS kitten lower-
Who does? If you are talking about Solandri.9640 previous post, he said that the tests are from earlier this year and he did not have an off-hand. It really means nothing at the moment.
Though if the offhand isn’t included then Sword will obviously be much better.
He did the testing with warhorn (as I saw on the link name, I didn’t clicked it), which means no off-hand on multi mob situation.
You can’t compare a 2 handed weapon with 1 handed, it’s just dumb.
or should mesmers and thieves just sit there and accept the fact that if a ranger catches you mid-fight with rapid fire there’s nothing you can do about it?
You know, in this game if you click twice very fast one of these keys: WASD (keybindings exceptions), or click that small yellow bar above your health (lol), your character does this thing, where he rolls on the ground for 1 second, that we call evade or dodge roll.
People should really start doing that, especially thieves.
Also yes, you have to accept the fact that if you are, as you said in “mid fight” and a glass cannon class catches you off guard with it’s most burs damaging ability, there’s a possibility that you might get killed.
I won’t bother reply in the rest of your post as this must have beed the most L2P issue I’ve seen in a while.
Have fun
PS: wait till this guy hears about the skills Sic ’em or Analyze… lol it will be glorious
We hashed this out pretty thoroughly earlier in the year. The belief that sword out-does greatsword DPS against multiple targets comes from a miscalculation – either thinking that all of sword’s attacks cleave (Kick does not), or forgetting to take into account GS’ higher base damage stat.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/greatsword-vs-sword-warhorn/page/2Here’s a summary of how it broke down back then (sword autoattack vs GW auto + Maul spam):
Sword
1 target = 1378 DPS
2 targets = 2315 DPS
3 targets = 3766 DPSGS no traits
1 target = 1209 DPS (88% sword)
2 targets = 2418 DPS (104% sword)
3 targets = 3627 DPS (110% sword)GS w/ Martial Mastery
1 target = 1289 DPS (94% sword)
2 targets = 2578 DPS (111% sword)
3 targets = 3867 DPS (118% sword)GS w/ 2H Training
1 target = 1306 DPS (95% sword)
2 targets = 2611 DPS (113% sword)
3 targets = 3917 DPS (120% sword)I haven’t had the time to play much, much less do new calcs. The math does need to be updated to take into account the changes to 2HT (fury is a PITA to incorporate since damage increase depends on base crit chance) and the new Predator’s Onslaught trait (the increased number of targets on Maul doesn’t change anything because by the time you’re at 4-5 targets GS is vastly superior to sword). But I use GS with either Martial Mastery or 2HT so the 10% extra damage from Predator’s Onslaught isn’t enough to tip things back in sword’s favor against multiple targets. Also note that the cripple on sword comes from Kick, which does not cleave. So you get the PO damage bonus only against a single target.
The actual DPS figures aren’t as important as the percent differences. We ignored things like crit chance, crit damage, and damage bonus traits since they’ll just scale the DPS by the same amount for both weapons assuming identical builds and equipment.
People seem to forget that sword is one-hand weapon and GS is two-handed…
Those test would be true if you ran only with sword equiped and nothing on the other hand. With an axe off hand where path of scars and occasionally WD comes to play, sword is still better for multi targets in most situations.
Also since it’s grouped content we are talking about (else why bother), PO trait’s damage is there in most occasions and has nothing to do with kick being 1 target skill. It comes to play when enemies are under crippled/immo/chilled, and the conds do not have to come from you. (Even though you have access to them like barrage and then swap, or cold snap from Frost spirit.. etc)
If the difference between single target DPS is only 5% it should be fine to use in dungeons right?
Define “should be fine”. Yes you can play , and yes you can do damage either way. Although you are holding yourself back for no reason which will not be appreciated by others.
Assuming you are talking hypothetically, because the difference between GS and S/A is as we said before about 17% and not 5…
Yeah.. 3 secs reveal is not enough. it was 4 and it still lacked. It is fine as it is now. As I said the cooldown could still get reduced by 5-10 secs
Not bad, but I think we got enough short hairstyles for Sylvari females already…

Something like this would fit better I think
Try to remove all the crap like auto target and auto attack (ctrl + right mouse) and it will not lock you, sword is a very interesting weapon, with some practice it can be really enjoyable.
interesting = broken
Broken = L2p
L2P calling = stupidity. Do you know how or how good I play? Do you know anything about me? So who are you to judge my skills? I can handle sword, I still say it’s broken.
It’s broken because it offers few advantages at the expense of many disadvantages.I know that when I started playing, I saw all the QQ about the Ranger best and most “hated” weapon. I could start QQ’ing as well straight away. I didn’t. Instead I listened to all the veteran ranger players that said with practice you can learn to melee every boss at the game with ranger sword.
Well guess what? I can now do it as well. After a few wipes in every boss, I know how they work, therefore I can pre-act even in those bosses where millisecs have a difference like in Archdiviner etc…
So no, the sword is not broken, it’s just different, and it’s what makes the game with a ranger more fun.
Again, “those that can, do. Those that can’t, complain.”
If your car window breaks you can use plasicbags and lots of tapes to fix it, as long as it’s not the windshield that breaks. It works but it’s nowhere good. You can learn how to time your dodges with the sword AA. It works but it’s nowhere good.
Same with the pet AI: You can make it work, however that doesn’t mean it’s flawless.
I don’t get what you’re trying to say. Once you learn to evade stuff with sword, you do not have any disadvantage.
“It works but it’s nowehre good” ? what does that mean? With sword equiped a ranger is huge damage boost to the group.
Just because people do not like the leaps, and are too lazy to learn how to use it, it does not mean that the weapon is broken.
I’ve read somewhere that the difference is about 17% in favor of sword. I suppose it becomes even more if you take axe off-hand for path of scars, plus you have 2 evades on sword which you can use to keep the trait from MM that gives you 10% more dmg when endurance is full.
Sword wins big time, it’s a no-brainer.
Only problem I have with sword is that it feels weird to use, which is why I’m asking. 17% is a huge number though.
Not trying to derail the thread, but would 45050 maximize GS dmg because of Two-Hand Mastery + Bountiful Hunter?
Yeah, yeah it would.
The difference IS huge. The sword “wierdness” is an issue for all new rangers, but if you plan on playing a lot and doing meta runs, learn how to use it. There are plenty videos showing ranger melee sword vs pretty much every boss.
Having said that, there are some fights where I’d swap to GS for 5 target maul, and the fact that you don’t really need a target. (CoF P2 defending the asura planting the bomd is a perfect example to that).
