It’s just a game.
Free game? No. Period.
Not only did Xsorus spend money, he spent time. A great deal of which he used to help others with builds and such for a class that has now let him down enough he feels he has to quit it. Sure it’s just a game, but it’s also time and money.
Having spent 2331 hours playing myself, my main being a guardian (1498 hours) with a legendary.. if this (what happened to ranger) is what became of my main class, I’d be pretty kitten annoyed too. Luckily for me I’ve only put in 430 hours on my ranger.

I always mention when I am new to a dungeon and I always get kicked- so I usually form a party myself.
Ive rarely very rarely found someone who would take the time to explain things to me in a dungeon.
You’re welcome in my parties. Any dungeon I don’t mind explaining to people.
Extra couple mins to explain never hurt anyone, some pugs are just impatient or lack the ability to communicate.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
One thing that may be useful to note is that Healing Seeds can no longer be used in Dungeons. We might be more welcome when every player in the game can’t bring something akin to our Healing Springs.
I had the sad realisation today that it could technically be seen as a buff to ranger simply because all our other dungeon ‘buffs’ have been so weak.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
I start off most dungeons normally. if team is poor (bad dps, people getting downed, scrubs in crap gear, low achieves, acting stupid.) I let them just kill through everything, no point trying to get bads to run through trash.
If they are a decent team I will run through no problems. If someone suggests running through, I’ll usually take them up on that offer also. I’m pretty /meh about it.
Already have all my gear, legendary etc so don’t really care either way, just doing dungeons to pass the time. Skip or no skip, I just get it done and then move onto the next one.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
So…..it’s your first time in PvP and you’re bad at it…..so you automatically blame the class?
I admit rangers need work, but we’re not as broken as some of ye claim.
Agreed.
Having a bad time in dungeons on ranger I can understand,
Pvp though, no, ranger is still quite acceptable in Pvp.
Try a few more builds before throwing in the towel on that one.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
When you have a team throwing around ideas like boon hate and nerfing mechanics that made pvp warriors viable and pve rangers dps (almost) acceptable, you know there’s only more fun to come.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Doing so would be admitting they had failed the class.
And no one wants to admit they are wrong.
100% not gonna happen.

yep, I run full zerker LB/SB quickness (pet swap/zeph) build for my ranger in PVE dungeons. I just recently put a T3 cultural set on it because I finally felt like I could actually provide enough dps in a team to be acceptable due to this build. Week or so later and it gets the kitten nerfed out of it.
GG ANet, GG.
PS- tried conditions traps, hate them. Bub bye ranger for now, hopefully they compensate for this in a later patch ( better DPS on LB or something -.-)

-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
If I’m not looking for a speedrun, I’m fine with anyone, I think each class brings it’s own contributions to a run.
With the exception of Rangers, though. Each run I ran with a Ranger they were just so terribly underwhelming. At first I thought it could be their build, but I found it hard to believe I would get these so many times in a row. I hate to discriminate against classes, but I always roll my eyes when a ranger joins a group. Can’t see what they bring into the party that someone else can’t, correct me if I’m wrong on this one.
Even when I’m on my ranger I kick rangers. They sit in the back with their bear pet and spam SB 1, god knows what gear they are in.
If you run full glass, piercing arrows, quickness on pet swap, sb/lb you can reach an acceptable level of dps imo. When lining up you can do between 7k to 15k rapid fire shots (total around 60k+?) which you pair with quickness for a decent AOE spike, get a barrage in there and then back to shortbow to maintain dps till quickness is back up. You can also do some aoe vaulnerability 10 to 15 stacks with openning shots and hunter’s shot. <- how easily this can be done really depends on your ability to line up targets and the group’s ability to keep mobs together.
Only real group utility is aoe CC ( entangle/ muddy terrain), Healing spring with a blast finisher pet (drake).
(which most pugs don’t even know exists it seems).
Pet res debatable.
Warhorn –
1 stack of might is laughable.
1 stack of fury- a warrior can do this.
1 stack of swiftness- nice for running through trash.
This means that another class is usually better as it will be able to keep up DPS and actually have some more useful utility eg. mesmer with timewarp or warrior with for great justice/banners/shouts and etc. However. If you have a mes, warrior, guard whatever, and you have those utilities covered, it sure is nice to have an aoe CC for things like charr fractal warriors and shaman adds while still keeping up some acceptable damage.
In other words- rangers are not needed. But they can become acceptable when played correctly. Just acceptable.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Well tbh. As someone who grinded their legendary almost purely through running dungeons, I can say it’s certainly made me a better dungeon player. Doing it this way required me to contribute as much as possible to the party to make those runs go faster and more efficiently. I had many gear sets I would run through, each for a different situation, and was constantly changing up traits to refine the perfect build for each dungeon.
On the other hand, I know someone who pretty much spent a ton of real life money and bought the whole thing. He’s an awful player.
I’ll never understand what ‘respect’ is in a video game either. I got my legendary because it was pretty, not to intimidate people or get ‘respect’. Same goes for commander titles and T3 gear. They don’t mean kitten. You don’t know how people got the money for those things. Who cares what anyone thinks online anyway :/

magic find gear… do you ask for all gear ping before a dungeon? I mean… that’s elitest right there, can’t deny it. I’m not going to say I wouldn’t rather nobody ran it, and that it’s not selfish, but hey if we can clear the content than fine.

Unfortunately after many many many many hours of my time wasted by magic finders I am forced to gear check to avoid incident. This is not something I wish to do, but history has not been kind to my parties.

Am I supposed to be offended? I hope not.
Not to hijack this thread into MF, but I don’t use MF. All I use is omnom bars for the gold. I’d rather see if the person is skilled or not instead of saying “You have MF? kick” which is not even as bad as what you’re doing. You’re intentionally blocking me because I don’t despise MF like yourself, which is fine, but completely ignorant.
Nope, I just don’t have time. This has been argued many many times on the forums, and it’s not worth my time of day to convince yet another person that magic find is never acceptable in dungeons. Nor do I wish to risk taking another person in MF regardless of whether they claim to be using it or not. When they support it, it sure makes it more likely they are using it.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Some professions require more skill/effort to achieve equal or close enough effectiveness as others. This I believe is the real issue.
As an example a ranger would have to work himself to the bone to come up to par ( or close enough) with warrior DPS, he would need to be in full glass cannon, constantly switching pets for quickness and weapons etc etc.
And yet he will never match the warrior’s group utility. He can however, provide some excellent CC’s and a water combo field. Many groups will of course prefer the warrior’s group utility, especially with skills like FGJ which up the DPS of the entire team and Battle standard for aoe might/fury or AOE res.
There are also points in time where your profession really does matter in a dungeon.
some examples can be found in the shaman boss fight from fractals:
Those who wants the chest at the first fight know you need to kill all the veterans before they kick the people over into the lava. When I am on my guardian and i have a team with poor DPS, at fotm 40+ it doesnt matter if im in full glass and running through all my CC’s to push them back, it’s just not enough to take them down in time. I switch to my glass cannon ranger and can burst those down no problem. Once we get to the shaman boss at the very end, once again, I’m now better off on my guardian many times over than my ranger for its supreme defensive capabilities in the ways for projectile reflection.
Another fractal: dredge-
Thieves are much appreciated for stealth although not needed. But very useful.
If you get the path where you need to run bombs to the door, often I will switch to my mesmer and portal/invisi run bombs up.. This can certainly save alot of time.

I just spent 3 hours in fotm 28 in a party of 2 rangers, a mesmer and a necro. they failed at the dredge because they lacked the DPS to take down the mining suit. Both were running bear pets with shortbow and questionable gear. There was no pet swapping and minimal weapon swapping.
This is what gives rangers a bad name, this is why I am really starting to question ever taking pug rangers.
This is what makes people avoid taking this class imo. Poor players.
PS- the necro was also pretty awful. Which certainly did not help. He at least had an AOE freeze for some cc :/

Both of the legendary bows look like they were designed by bronies, tbh. Not that I have anything against bronies, but its just not my thing. In fact, I really can’t be swayed by 95% of the skins they have for any of the bows. I’m mostly praying that I get the bow drop from fractals.
Oh I am so holding out for the fotm bow too, I think it’s amazing and just as good if not better than the legendary options atm.

ArenaNet, please make other dungeons more attractive to run relative to COF. In comparison to the rewards of COF farming, the rewards of other dungeons pale in comparison. The only dungeon that can approximate the rewards from an hour spent speed running COF will be COE and that is if the player gets lucky with lodestone drops and could manage the 3-in-1. Take CM for example, so few are willing to do CM because the effort-reward ratio is just so low compared to COF, COE, or even AC. If you want people to explore more of the content instead of just mindlessly grinding COF ( I mean for crying out loud you have people who go with Sigil of Smothering), then the rewards from other dungeons should be at par with COF speed running. Instead of nerfing COF P1 can we get more chests or 10s mobs from the longer dungeons? I’m pretty sure that people wouldn’t mind going full runs on CM, TA, and SE if they got around three more money and bag mobs and/or chests.
I agree with this, but unfortunately what is most likely to happen is this:
COF farm nerf- Now cannot be completed easily or in a timely manner worthy of farming.
Nothing else.

it’s always fun to join a group where someone is who thinks he knows everything best but actually has a very limited understanding of the game. I don’t assume Luciusbrimstone belongs to this category, but if someone starts giving stupid commands, I will argue with them. for example: a p/p thief tried to tell everyone on an AC path 2 run to go after rangers first, because necros and eles aren’t a problem as you can just walk out of the circles. he always removed the targets from the necros.
apart from that, I mostly agree, it would be so much easier if people had the decency to not deliberately kitten a group.
while the ‘no ranged’ bit is a bit extreme, I agree that people should try to stay in a cluster, share their boons/heals and preferably attack melee as long as their health pool allows. but I’d rather if someone was switching to a ranged weapon when their health gets low instead of going down and having someone ress them and lose even more dmg.a ranger running anything other than the water field (or placing it at max range) is just plain useless and should be kicked immediately though. it’s their one truly exceptional skill which combined with a blast-finisher heavy teammate (hammer guardian i.e.) can change the course of a fight more than any other skill from any class by itself. especially in not really coordinated groups.
I just wanna point out, that, while I agree, ranger’s water field is awesome.. what irks me is that, (when on my ranger) I place it down on the group, and NO-ONE combo finishes in it, even when health is low and it could have saved em. This is important, know your combos!
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Gonna add something here: A high level fractal group looking for geared players- pug joins, he pings his gear set, it’s fine. We get in, he’s wearing another set.
It appears to be crafted rares.
He insisits it’s the set he pinged, even though it’s an entirely different skin.
5 mins later, sigil of luck pops up next to his name.
We aren’t stupid my friend. /kick.

Inferior =/= non-viable/bad.
The sooner people understands this, the easier it is to compare other classes properly. Rangers ARE inferior, but that does not make them non-viable for dungeons. You can clear most dungeons if not all with whatever wacky setup you want, but some compositions will do it faster/safer/more consistently. If you take each party member’s individual skill out of the equation of whether you’ll succeed in a dungeon or not, you’re left with the breakdown of what each class can do. (Skill makes up for a larger factor whether you succeed or not than class composition). Some classes are riskier to bring due to the fact they offer less utility / dps / support than other classes. Why should the average joe subject themself to more risk? Most won’t, the ones that do are more patient or delusional. The ones that post how amazing their ranger is in this thread are the delusional ones. The ones that post about how ranger’s can do it too but understand that it’s not the fastest/easiest way but still decide to party with them are the more patient ones.
This exactly. ^ Why take the ranger when you can take the warrior which is faceroll to play class. You don’t know who the average pug is, and chances are they could be very bad. It is better to place your bets on the classes that are easier to play and have the strongest group utility. This is the mentality I find, and it’s much easier to take a ranger when you know who they are and if they are any good.
Rangers are not useless, they are just inferior.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Ah CoF P1- The farmer’s last bastion. When they nerf this, I can only imagine the trading post frenzy.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
I had just got a greatsaw for my ranger right before I heard about the buff.. was over the moon XD
Yea but I am kinda concerned, if they are going just to buff maul, still will be underpowered. They need to make the chain faster and with more dps, and change some other skills…
My opinion is, based on the history of ranger updates, that Greatsword’s buff will be another small one that will not increase the weapon’s damage significantly enough to warrant a legendary. Just IMO though , who knows :P
- Besides damage though, you can at least get a good block and daze out of it, along with a leap to get out of bad situations for a WvW bunker.

I came to similar conclusion as many people here after playing ranger at 80. Ranger is just bad in end game content. They have poor support, and have to work twice as hard to just deal damage, which comes naturally for other classes. Pets are a dead horse. No point in beating it further.
I watched the recent dev interview and does not look promising either. So if you wanna run end game content – do yourself a favor and reroll.it’s acceptable if you are a skilled player.
For my ranger in dungeons I run full glass cannon with Longbow/shortbow, quickness on pet swap. I also take muddy terrain and Entangle for some excellent CC in places like fractals shaman boss and charr fractals charging warriors.
Please do not ever use longbow. You are willingly making yourself a waste of a party slot. Use Axe/Warhorn for your second set. At least you can throw some buffs and bleeds on swap instead of just doing horrid DPS that nobody will even notice if it is gone.
Actually you can hit as high as 14k shots with rapid fire on longbow as full glass cannon+ food, Add in Piercing arrows trait, and that’s some very nice AOE damage.
I would not say that is nothing and not noticeable. In fact when we do shaman boss, if the dps isnt high enough in my pug to take down the vets, i’ll grab the ranger and spike them down no problem. With quickness on pet swap + quickening zephire, you can almost always have quickness up to run through your longbow rapid fire, barrage and +10 vulnerability shot, then you can switch to shortbow again to maintain the DPS. Add in your openning shots trait, thats +15 stacks of aoe vaulnerability. Your barrage also serves a large aoe damage and cripple to slow mobs, particularly useful in dredge fractal. Even Point Blank Shot can be used very effectively to line up and shoot back charging warriors in the charr fract, or other undesired mobs.
Warhorn’s birds are nice, but the fury skill is useless because you can trait to gain fury on weapon swap anyway, and a warrior in your party will always be a better source of fury than you are, Also that one stack of might and swiftness is a bit of a joke. And speaking of bad damage, the axe is rather poor.
You are ( I suppose) referring to a condition build, but this is not the only build available and I find it rather sad that you would belittle others because they don’t do the same as you.
Well, excuse me for assuming you would run a condition build since you have a shortbow in there. If you are not, then the shortbow is a waste of the equip slot. No matter how you turn it, its a pretty bad combo.
Thanks for bringing up Piercing Arrows btw. Note how it is a pretty much required trait for any bow build, and yet no other class have to trait into cleave for their weapons. If you look closely that is exactly how everything about ranger is. They need to trait and spec deeply into things that come naturally to other classes.
Oh, you want 30% of your damage to not be perpetually dead? You’ll have to micro it back and forth (which of course defeats the main purpose of keeping it alive) or trait deeply into BM hurting the rest of you damage. No other class have to do that.
Want your signets to work? There is a trait for that too!
I’m not arguing that ranger is some amazing class in dungeons, I am of the opinion they are pretty sub-par. But I do believe they become acceptable when played correctly. It is well known that the SB/LB combo with full glass will give the best DPS in dungeons, even if as you have constantly argued, warrior does more. The damage over time of the shortbow autoattack, even with no condition gear is still better than your other options.
And I agree, piercing arrows as a trait line is pretty stupid, but that’s what we have to use. Imo, all ranger arrows should be piercing by default.
And yes, we all know that ranger’s utility is a joke, so may as well get the most optimal DPS in and try to perform as much CC as possible through traps, knockback, cripple and entangle.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
No I don’t believe I have ever seen jade maw reset. The trick at the end is to make sure you all have a crystal and stand still, don’t be discouraged!

Heyo, I’m one of those people. I make sure never to be the one that enters, and I always ask the pugs I get in if it is okay with them before I do it. Honestly, it wouldn’t be an issue if they just removed the whole psuedo party leader and didn’t ever kick an entire party out. It’s mindboggling that they haven’t changed that.
Btw, yes I am too lazy to level my alts up. I’ve leveled 3 characters to 80 now. Doing the same zones, same DEs, same personal stories.. it’s really not all that enjoyable.
As for using crafting, this is a free method of getting levels, and it actually earns you money in the process. Not just from the money and loot drops, but because every character gets their own separate “first run” of the day. Meaning, each character will get their 60 tokens before DRing to 20. More tokens, more ectos, more money.
:)
I don’t have an issue with this so long as the person intending on doing it lets me know before we start the run so it’s no unexpected. It really doesn’t affect me or my team in the slightest, especially when I insist on opening the instance so there are no kitten-ups at the end.
Once you’ve made your 8th character, no one wants to lvl it up the old fashioned way, it’s boring and grindy, so I find it completely understandable.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Wow. What a kitten terrible idea….
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
50 pristine imo is a fair price, 50 daily runs- thats alot of time a player has wasted not to get a skin, and I think it would be a fair trade if they could turn those in.
myself- I am up to 68 prstines with no skins from those 68 runs and I feel rather burnt out
Really would like a light at the end of the tunnel T_T
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
GS is terrible, end of story.
You can’t find a use for it so it’s end of story? Some of the best BM and trap videos are with GS Rangers. Forgive us if you’re end of story isn’t really that conclusive.
TBH I think ranger is actually great in PvP and WvW, and Greatsword has it’s place there, and its nice that it’s getting a buff.
But, from a dungeon point of view, greatsword is certainly subpar DPS and I dont think thier updates will improve it enough to make me use it in dungeons…. but so are alot of other ranger skills and traits which I think would be more deserving of a (pvp exclusive) buff, and I think that may be where the disappointment comes in.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
gs on ranger lv 80 deals dmg like warrior on lv 20 ..not mentioning that 4th skill dont block..especialy warrior hundred blades or thiefs spaming heartseeker.. it block 1st hit without even kicking tief or warior back .. sometimes not even block
Even with another damage increase to ranger Greatsword, it’s still poor DPS in dungeons. This upcoming patch will not encourage me to run Gretsword anymore than now, nor I feel, will it encourage me to play my ranger any more than now.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
My views on team composition:
- The only class that should consider support over DPS is Guardian; other classes should focus on DPS for PVE. Don’t gear for a support/tank role, you’ll just be very mediocre at best that way, just pick a few good weapon skills/utilities/traits after building for DPS.
- My ideal all-purpose party would probably be Guardian/Thief/3x DPS Warrior. Thief+Guardian would give you very strong defense against both trash and bosses while still doing decent DPS, then 3 warriors for offensive buffs/killing stuff.
I am of the same view. My Guard is mostly support/tank with some DPS. Rest of my alts are full zerks. Also, when there is a second guard in the group, I will switch my guard’s gear set to DPS.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Simple: Don’t trust pugs.
Always open the dungeon yourself.
Problem solved.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
It makes me especially sad that Warrior banners, which are innately better than spirits (unkillable, better buffs, mobile), are getting buffed.
I did a facepalm at that bit. Banners are pretty kitten good compared to Spirits.
Yet they get buffed?
This.
It’s like spirits are useless banners.
Only moveable with traits.
Effect only hits at 50% chance (35 without trait)
More HP only with Traits (they can take one hit more then, lol)And Banners,
Better buffs
Moveable
Indestructable
Effect is there at 100% chance
Effectively depressing.
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
- Gs auto attack does 5% more damage
- ranger pets now benefit from agony resistance
- Sb attack speed has been reduced
- spirits now have a 10 second duration before disappearing
- healing spring no longer removes conditions
- traps can no longer be laid on top of each otherProbably something like this, wouldn’t surprise me at all given how much Rangers have been getting screwed over the past 7 months.
Oh and ‘we found an animation problem with the longbow, the autoattack now has a 10 second cast time!’
-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-
Well, they will boost GS – weapon barely used by rangers and not even requested.
Pretty much for one (unneeded) boost comes 3-5 nerfs, so it’s pretty possible they will nerf something common claiming they just fixed bug.

i hardly accept rangers except i know them (thats 2) else no rangers in my parties…
why? because EVERY time i tried i had the typical rangers… stay as far as you can and go braindead afk with normal hits.
no wonder nobody wants them
Gotta quote this for truth. Sadly the playerbase gives this class an awful reputation and I am the same, alot of the time if I have a bad hunch I’ll kick them. A gear check and checking achieve points can help filter out alot of the bads, but it still shocks me, the amount of rangers with 5k+ achieves who cannot play the class. I assume they are alts :/
I am tired of the same old.. ranger with his shortbow spamming 1 right in the back with his dead pet bear beside him.
