Take away account wide gold find, and magic find by an extension of that logic. It discriminates against new players. Nodes in home instances? Also a no no. Unfair.

100% this
Heaven forbid you deserve any kind of reward for spending your time achieving high ranks in WvW.

The irony is that it still takes 20 hours to max out tickets for the week at high ranks. Meanwhile in pve it takes 3 hours to max Magnetite Shards or w.e. in raids.

It aged poorly. There.

1v1v1 promise of “variety” only showed more issues, and persistence around the clock has led to even more issues…neither of which seemed to accomplish “fun” or “dynamic” and lastly… “rewarding tangibly or mentally.” It was a good experiment to show the gaming world however, and I hope the industry learns from it.

No, this is out of scope given the perceived lack of resources on WvW’s development team. If I am wrong about that, then the issue is more for the balance team which already has problems in WvW.

Looking at your post history you are probably a new player to WvW, correct? Welcome to WvW, and I apologize for cynicism. Your suggestion feels hopeful, and I appreciate it. It’s just out of scope.

Translation: Source does not exist. Have fun wasting your time trying to find it.

I would tend to agree, I am pretty sure I have read every single red post on these forums, at least since HoT, and most dev comments or reddit on top of that. However, I don’t recall anything having been mentioned about next expansion beyond the fact that Mike Z is at the helm of that ship and that the team was “offline” for about a month to fix up HoT.

There is no feasible way to construe that as ArenaNet changing the next expansion ETA, because to my recollection we never had any ETA to begin with outside unofficial predictions by third parties or trying to divine the future from NCSoft forecasts.

Agreed. Am sure it was something said by the devs that lil devils misinterpreted in some bizarre way, and that now is his ‘source’ for this mysterious Anet saying HoT was a flop garbage. Just projecting ones’ own biases on some innocuous dev post, I would be willing to bet.

Of course! That must be it? How much you care to wager?
If you make it worth my time I may consider retrieving it for you.

I don’t know how else to put this. I don’t know if this is even “re-portable,” but please stop derailing the original topic. It is very annoying to have to go through 2-3 pages of posts to see the same 3 or so people make unrelated responses to one another. Take it elsewhere, or don’t reply at all.

Is WvW Competitive?

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

1. No. It’s a 24/7 game mode that bases a huge chunk of it’s scoring system on time. Meaning it merely comes down to who is willing to play more (e.g. have more coverage).

2. No, not in it’s current state. It might have a chance of being better if balance was separate, but even still it wouldn’t be competitive due to number 1.

3. No, not in it’s current state. Especially true if updates cannot happen regularly due to technically reasons (for example: they do not have the infrastructure to change maps less then 3 months).

At best the time-zones would need to be segregated if you want a semblance of balance in coverage to make it “competitive.” Even then, portions of WvW has mixed feelings, such as the dilemma between the siege warfare, and open field fighting.

What is YOUR idea for a "Perfect" WvWvW?

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Sweet merciful Dwayna bless me. You ask players to create ideas for the perfect WvWvW, but sadly I think a quote will probably hold true here. From the Rust, and Garry’s Mod developer. Garry Newman,“Players are useful at conveying mood and a feeling. They’re not game designers, their ideas generally involve making it so they can win at the game more.” Quote from here. While the guy comes off abrasive to me, there is a point. A lot of posts here do tend to favor certain play styles when it comes to WvW’s feedback.

I get that the OP’s wants people to post their perspective on their version. But how useful is this really to the current WvWvW?

All I can say is, without trying to exclude other play styles is this: change WvWvW to WvW. This opens up more map opportunities, and increases balance viability of said maps. This also removes the laggy elephant in the room when it comes to three-ways by full forces. I would go on to say let maps reset once every 2-3 hours to decrease effects of coverage, but I’m willing to disregard that.

How to: Prevent server hopping

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

No to the OP, for it promotes exclusion, and transferring issues are merely a symptom to the tier system in a 24/7 game mode that is the real issue. If you wanted population balance you would have to abandon persistence. Simply put, not everyone can put in the same time into Gw2 as everyone else.

Yep, you can´t stop greed, it´s human nature.

I’m not saying it’s a problem. I’m rather saying that wvw players are keeping gw2 afloat. Gw2 is difficult to financially manage without it having a monthly fee.

The source? I highly doubt it’s true given how few actually play WvW. Furthermore with money increases from badge/notary conversions alongside reward track the need to pay real money for transfers has decreased in my opinion.

[Suggestion] Skirmish Scoring

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

I feel there is no difference between the new scoring and the old one, is maybe even worse.

Why would there be a difference? Coverage still affects it the most, and scoring does not physically change population. You can fiddle with the scoring numbers all you want, but it will still be an inconsistent experience to the players unless they are moved around in a balanced manner.

As suggestion, what about new points for each skimish:

  • 5 for 1st;
  • 4 for 2nd;
  • 3 for 3rd.

In that way would alleviate the differences between the servers (the 1st isn’t 3 times ahead of 3rd, but almost 2 times). Maybe other values like 4, 3, 2 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd if the diference is too low?

Why would you seek to remove the ‘differences between the servers’ in a match up?

I am against artificially handicapping scores to make up for gaps in population (again, coverage helps current scores the most). What you suggest is to have match-ups linger on due to closer artificial scores despite drastic differences in populations.

This game mode lives and dies by its population, it is unfortunate and short sighted that people felt that scoring should take priority. I believe if population/coverage was resolved scoring would have been less of an issue….regardless that is another topic.

100 badges per 1 WvW ticket

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

No. Tickets are a time gated currency doing this badge exchange would remove that fact, and thus remove the value of a Ticket. In a few months Tickets would simply become the new stockpile currency. Around, and around we go from there. The way it is now, it will happen in like a year at this current rate. After or during that year, I would propose tickets purchasing the fancy consumables from HoT (e.g. damage reduction foods, stones/oils/crystals, etc. ). Since most of those also require a time gate material, and this will help to curb the rise in stockpile currency since utilities are temporary after all.

P.S. : If this game was subscription based I would be all for it, however it’s not. (Time gated things in a subscription based game is a scummy way to get player’s money over time without providing content).

P.S.S.P.S. : Forum kept clipping my message.

Really? Because it’s the only map that actually looks like it’s in the Mists. The others could be any random place in Tyria since they lack a sense of world beyond. The terrain even acknowledges three teams (snow, sand, and forest). The only down side is the distance of things, and the numerous pot holes. Otherwise, who ever did the aesthetic actually had some decent narrative vision when it comes to relating back to Guild Wars 2’s interpretations of the Mists (e.g. fragments of dimensions).

incoming damage target cap

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Nah. The idea puts forward exclusion. WvW needs to be inclusive (even if that means omni blobs…) mainly because it’s bleeding out new players. You may get people calling out others for being low level, and doing minimal damage. That lowbee’s presence essentially blocks out damage. After all, GW2 was founded on people joining up and helping each other.

At best they should copy GW1 in regards to hard CC (Gw1 only had Knockdown). Meaning while you have a specific CC you are immune to that specific CC for the duration (to prevent perma lockdowns).

I understand that people wish to hamper the omni blob behavior. The best, but costly, would usually come down to map design. Most other ideas have been artificial number changes. I also suspect incoming damage cap increases server load because it adds that additional step of denial (sort of like DDOS).

Changes needed about Mesmer portal bomb

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

As if being outnumbered wasn’t enough. I Feel like there is a serious abuse on mesmer portal bombs.

Be specific. What is the abuse? Furthermore, being outnumbered has nothing to do with portal bombs.

I think the list of correction i have brought out would help it getting balanced.

It was really already balanced when only 20 people can go through at a time, which required people to stay behind or play more mesmers.

1. Portals not allowed in wvw = only pve skill

Why? It’s one skill that requires more team coordination over their other skills. Otherwise you are going to end up with clone spamming condi mesmers.

2. Cool downs faster to cast the second portal in wvw limiting the range

What would be the point of portals if the range is so limited? At that rate you’d need to remove it.

3. Portals not working when this isn’t your keep

Why? It gives attacking team a chance to by pass a rather boring time gate in the game mode. Defense has been given so much already with all the feature creep of guild upgrades…

4. When the other side is outnumbered portals aren’t working

You being outnumbered has nothing to do with the portal skill.

Simple but effective way to balance the entire bombing situation that is beyond trolling at this point.

I hope this is a troll post. I get it. It sucks when you are outnumbered. Nerfing Portals IS NOT the solution to that. That’s a population problem, and skill balance will never resolve it.

WvW Poll: Next Project Priority (Closed)

in WvW

Chinchilla.1785

1 up 1 is great if evenly matched, but since population was never resolved…scoring and match making will forever be an issue making me not care for either option.

At best, for population disparities you can do a weight limit tiers like in UFC. A heavy weight would never have any chance whatsoever to be matched against a welterweight (google it for an adventure!) or light weight. It’s not like there is really variety in game play between said weight tiers, just mass difference (eg population difference).

This way, we don’t end up wasting the time of a light weight server being matched up to Maguuma and Blackgate for an entire week like we have currently. Keeping in mind there are other timezones besides prime, and resert night blobs.

Problem with Alliances is, like what happened on GW1, the big guilds will align together and crush everyone else. Forced Alignment will not work either.

I don’t know what Build Wars 1 you were playing, but alliances there worked differently, and largely didn’t have the problems of coverage crushing in a 24/7 game mode.

The “alliance battle” for example was a queued 12v12. If there wasn’t anyone for the other side the battle didn’t start. Many of the pvp-type gamemodes were queues in fact…

Population Math

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Guestimation I made a while ago: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Is-WvW-too-big/first

….
Each map holds about 75 people per team, so 225 people per map. There are 4 maps, so potentially there could be 900 people playing non-EOTM wvw per each match up. There are 12 matchups per region, right(lost track with linking)? So that’s 10800 for US, and 10800 for EU (I think they have 12 match ups?).

Meaning, at any given time only 21600 players can be in WvW (not counting EOTM overflows). That’s assuming people even choose to play it. The active population is probably less than that.

So it’s probably even less than 1/20th of 7 million.

Changing outmanned

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Taking it a step further. As I seem to understand it so far. You want to be able to take on larger group while you/your server has very few people. I can see the initial allure of that. However, it means that are artificially increasing the value of your people to be on par with a larger amount of people (or being able to avoid them completely).

Going past some technical limitations, this is my issue: you/your server isn’t matched well with the opponent. I don’t think this is the route to take to resolve that issue of match making. If we statistically raise the value of a 3rd place server you are holding back those beneath your tier from going up. In essence, you could be locking the match up.

Personally, I thought ideas like Siegerazor/Siegerazor to help a server “breakout” of spawn were good. They could have been done more/differently (perhaps give said server a free dragon banner…). But I don’t think giving statistical increases to outnumbered is the right way to go.

Chinchilla.1785

Another matchup-esque thread that hasn’t be stopped yet, eh?

To answer what I believe the intended concern of the OP in regards to TCs “new” transfers (e.g. /thread)

1. ND transferred from BG to TC to fight DBs previously considered “large” sea-timezone. Sea time for T1 died when the following disappeared: Ng, cA, SuS, Wai from KILL stopped commanding. There may have also been some drama with other Sea guilds, and feel free to me correct if otherwise.

2. Kazo transferred from JQ to TC for better EU scene, and some drama decisions on JQ ’s part. BG no longer has meaningful presence in EU, YB has presence that purely runs around to PPT, and 10-15 eXa guys (who are also bored lol).

3. KILL did not officially transfer to TC, people have the tag still since it was a more of a public server guild.

4. CF did transfer to TC for the NA timezone, I don’t know why. TC’s NA isn’t that great though, so they prolly just balanced that bit out.

5. I transferred to TC to scout T2. TC is a great community, but the quality of fights in T2 isn’t ideal on all three servers (not including roaming). So, don’t expect my garbo “fight” guild to transfer to T2 if that eases your minds.

Good luck thread!

Suggestion: WvW Jobs

Chinchilla.1785

No, i playing GW2 for 4 years now, the lack of resources is the reason of this post, resources suggestion, nothing is out of scope everyone is waiting for a big WvW patch with things like that, is very dumb to stay silent waiting for them to do something you want but they don’t know you want, we have to let them know what we want, if we dont ask for, is this way they are really not doing it

Understood. Let me clarify. I am okay with you suggesting this regardless of ANET’s desire to implement it (or not or partially).

My issue of scope is in regards to power creep. You suggest to bring in more stats into the game mode. This means more numbers must be thrown in for the balance team (assuming they take part in this feature). Sadly it is hard for me to dig up posts about developers’ concerns when it comes to balancing power creep, whereby adding more power creep. It’s a valid concern here regardless.

Your ideas of stat improvements to different play styles has/does work in other games. And it is interesting. Am I allowed to mention other games?

League of Legends has a simple passive trait system for defense, offense, and utility that boost those three play styles. Even the now notorious Mass Effect Andromeda has a profile systems that accentuates different play styles. They both work well since both were conceptualized, and balanced early on.

As far as progression. I dislike the current WvW ranks since the massive wall can be a large barrier to entry for the new players (this game mode needs new players). I would prefer it replaced entirely, or all its effects defaulted. If WvW Ranks was replaced by a play style based system with similar ideas you described that would be super. I recall the initial idea of WvW ranks was so players had roles. Irony is it’s just another thing to max out, and be omni-useful to anyone.

Your top 5 priorities for WvW-Overhaul

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

I need to preface this by stating, I don’t normally make posts in these “list-like” topics. I’ll read some, but I feel (even if people post relevent topic links) discussion doesn’t develope enough or it becomes unfocused. It might be better to get ingame polls (if that is even an option).

Regardless, this is my list of priorities for WvW/Guild Wars 2:

1. Gamemode Item Unlock System: similar to Spvp current system (and old Gw1 pvp system), in that each item slot can be unlocked for stat combinations (instead of a single gem that has all the same stats). Perhaps similar for food/utility slots.

In short, this is to provide the potential for equal opportunity, streamline build testing, and enable guilds to fully synchronize their own builds across members (very important to support guilds). Would recommend having exotic level availible initially, then ascended unlocked via gold + gamemode currency (ascended unlocked automatically if the player has already gained it in PvE). This provides equal opportunity, so you dont need to wait 1 month to just try a set of celestial, nor will low-levels be easy kills due to current stat scaling (being easy kills makes a new players’ experience with WvW worse).

2. Learning To Play: one the longest lasting issues with WvW (and you can argue Gw2 as a whole) is the lack of teaching the playerbase how to play. This kills the population by hurting growth (death by population starvation is not good). This combat system is by far one of the best/fluid for MMOs, but also the most in depth.

The concerns for new players is addressed in this reply from former Forum Specialist ArchonWing.9480: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/WvW-is-over-RIP-the-dream

His reply to the topic addresses the concerns that a new player will be scared off by: dying to power creep, vague tutorials, map design, quality of life issues, and poor rewards. Minus the rewards/Quality of Life, having decent in game tutorials can resolve most of these issues.

Example of a new player/reviewer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2p2s9piILg

He admits in the beginning that his first review was poor due not understanding how leveing is done in Guild Wars 2.
• Even as playing on an ele it seems he believes fire is the only useful attunement (completely untrue in WvW).
It doesn’t seem like he understands combo finishers and combo fields. Which is something I didnt learn well until I made my thief (I had already leveled the ranger to 80 by then!).
Stated he really needed a friend to show him the ropes due to poor in game communication.
• Only shows he experiences EOTM style of WvW (and the scorpions are cool).

Again, without helping newer players the game[mode] will starve. It cannot fall solely on the playerbase/communities, and “vague tooltips.”

There are three examples I have come across that worked to educate the player base (listed by easiest implementation first). What is important is that these are in game.

Working Solutions:

A. Short Clips in game that show how to perform certain actions (such as combo fields and finishers).
Vindictus example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHHaOfpjmPU

B. Hands on approach! Require the player to perform the action or sequence in a separate instance (you can reward them for completing a whole “quest” line of training).
The fighting game Skullgirls does this well (skip to about 1:00): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-Upgf1NTis
The Canthan Expansion for Guild Wars 1 had a separate questline that did this too: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Instructor_Ng See quests given:

C. Expand upon the hands on approach, but learning from instanced WvW game mode objectives. Perhaps even understanding what to do in small groups or large groups.
Guild Wars 1 had this for four of the pvp arenas, with AI : http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Team_Trials

3. Scoring: This is important as it determines who you fight against. My preference is simple, remove any and all forms of “ticking for points” in a 24/7 game mode.

Change scoring to accurately reflect activity, and give potentially equal value to timezones: Points Per Kill (is active, shows someone died and someone killed). Points Per Cap (is active, shows someone had to cap an objective). Points Per Upgrade (is needed, giving reason to hold, and upgrade for a time). The tier should scale up the point value for capture and upgrading.

I had more description in a reply on here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Just-another-solution-to-PPT
With this change you would probably need to disable the current Glicko rating.

4. Separate Balancing for WvW: Fairly self explanatory. This includes all siege/items/skills/buffs.

Having this foundation allows you to address issues for “Stability” or “Power Creep.” Otherwise people will claim things are “gimmicky” when they essentially lack an intuitive counter (such as some of the guild upgrades).

5. Community Co-op: This is best illustrated by the current “Forum Specialist” program. A player volunteers their time to best represent a playerbase, and provide a link between Anet and said playerbase. (One gripe, is that forum specialist should have free transfer powers allowing the opportunity to better represent and observe the WvW community)

I understand Arenanet addressed concerns for legal issues on expanding on future programs (like player workshops) due to legal issues across governments. Try to expand the idea, or hold contests (like in the past for guild insiginias)! I believe it would be good to utilize ideas/content from the community.

Examples:

• If you are to do in game video tutorials (as suggested above), this can be player generated content.

• Map design features that could be voted on in a contest, see a features topic here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Constructive-Features-for-a-good-BL-map/page/2

Good luck! tldr: Read the bold only.

Chinchilla.1785

I guess you don’t run a business then.

The game mode is not a business, and this is not a good analogy for WvW.

One thing you don’t want to do is discourage foot traffic through your store.

In the days of crafting stations the game mode was still popular. By enabling people to sit at crafting stations hoping they would participate means they clog up the queue for those wanting to fight. Would it better to advertise jumping puzzles so players can spend time doing that, and hope that would be a segway into WvW itself? Your intention is right, but crafting stations/jumping puzzles is not right in an environment with limited space.

You don’t want to discourage those who go in for one reason and end up staying for another. You also don’t want to dry up any free advertising source.

No, I don’t. However, if “word of mouth” so to speak, is the only way WvW is getting advertised then something fundamentally is wrong in that regard. I also don’t believe that crafting contributed to increased player retention but neither of us can prove it. Again right intention, but not execution.

1) free advertising gone: PvE people were actively promoting going to WvW. They no longer do this.

Mega servers decreased advertising for WvW more dramatically than removing crafting stations imo. Mainly by not being on the Lion’s Arch server you were hoping to recruit from…

2) going in for one reason and staying for another: One thing that business people know is that getting people through the door is the hard part. Once there, selling is easy. The crafting was a “door” to WvW. It pulled PvEers into the maps. Once there they could “be sold” on playing on the maps. They might see a Zerg run by and join it. They might wander over and try to capture a camp. The point is, it brought them in and after that it was easy to check it out. Once checked out you might get a convert. This no longer happens.

If we’re going to continue this analogy, then the “door” should clearly advertise the game mode. The actual product the business makes isn’t being advertised. It’d be like walking into a Bed Bath and Beyond, then walking out with Call of Duty 4. This suggest something fundamentally is wrong. WvW is not being sold right at all. Hoping you get a convert to WvW is inconsistent if this is the manner you feel is best.

To recap. Removing crafting was shortsighted on two fronts. It stopped free advertisment from PvEers and it removed the players who come in for a PvE reason and stay for WvW reasons.

No, it was a long term decision. Whenever a change is made to improve the game play or its accessibility that will always be a long term move (for better or worse). It enabled those that want to get into the action of WvW without waiting for a queue increased by the ones who ‘may engage in it after crafting a legendary from gift of battle.’ The “free advertisement” is debatable if it was ever measured, but that’s not how you would want to promote WvW directly, and doesn’t guarantee player growth nor retention. The staying for “WvW reasons” should be that the game play is a solid sell…sadly I think that is one of its issues.

So, if ANet cared about promoting WvW to PvE players they shouldn’t have removed an element that both brought WvW to PvE players attention and actively brought in PvE players to WvW maps.

If they cared about promoting WvW they’d do it by better means…and preferable after an update with substance. Crafting stations is not it.

[Suggestion] Make defense profitable again

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Defending is boring, that’s why barely anyone does it. No one cares about ppt. Maybe if you built the tower or keep you would want to defend it but it’s been the same for almost 5 years. No one cares about these towers and keeps for the most part.

For every time you post that “nobody cares about x”, there is someone out there who does actually care about it. WwW has a split personality if you look at the player base. And interestingly, the game was far more alive when the PPT crews were out there in force, defending and protecting “their stuff”.

Just maybe we should consider that moving in a direction pushed for by the subset that only wants fights all the time may have done damage, and bringing back strategic value and a reason to hold your stuff just might be the right direction to go.

OP suggested adding rewards to “defensive activities.” Yes, it is true, rewards aren’t going to change game play on their own. Playing for objectives only (the PPT) has been a below average experience in my opinion. Playing for combat only (PPK or KDR stuff) has also been a below average experience as I have done so far. Probably because neither received enough attention when it comes to balance or polish.

The glaring problem with the current WvW community is division. However, the current WvW tries a mixture of the two. If you only wanted just PPT or PPK I doubt you will ever be entirely pleased with WvW. Having a few interacting with siege, and a dozen waiting around is boring. Throwing bodies at each other in a flat field gets meaningless real quick.

I think all we can agree on is the desire for balance, and to encounter one another more frequently. Skewing to one figurative side or the other when it comes to balance can be detrimental to the other half of WvW. Perhaps WvW was doomed from the start, and no amount of feature creep (like rewards) will fix that.

Hypothetically Speaking... New Worlds?

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Fairly regularly, I see posts that say something to the effect of:

“The world that most of our guild is on is Full, so we’ve been having our new/returning guild members transfer to the Guest world, but what will happen if the Guest world gets relinked? Will we have to pay to transfer all those members again?”

This solution would give guilds like that an opportunity to freely reform on a world with plenty of space for their entire guild.

Now of course it’s still entirely possible that guilds won’t actually be willing to transfer off their current worlds, even for the opportunity to get all of their members onto the same world. However, that’s exactly why I made this post, just to confirm either case.

The other issue is how do you guarantee you have opponents to fight against? Unless there is a some sort of “pledging guild to transfer here” system that is available to public viewing (so they can see if enemys are actually there), I don’t think people will transfer to fight npcs. Of course this could work against you, unless you disallow tier progress on said servers so stacking to move up tiers is pointless.

It’s one of the issues BG sea time zone has, and TC eu time zone has, being that there aren’t formidable opponents to play against.

I don’t represent any of the “off-hour” people, but BG sea and JQ sea can queue 2-3 maps which is a significant population that merely wants to fight one another, but due to the effects of transfers in/out in the other timezones…they can’t. Unfortunately, I don’t think these Sea guilds/people voice their opinions on this forum (they usually are korean, thai, japanese, w.e.)

In more serious-ness. If they allowed player base to more directly fund the game mode(s) each person prefers, then we might see more effort put into WvW. Maybe even with double gem compensation.

Or in other words, let the players speak with their wallets when/if they decide to purchase gems/things. That being said, 50% should be decided by the company…imo customers are right 50% of the time, and vice versa for the company.

What is YOUR idea for a "Perfect" WvWvW?

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

That’s because players aren’t game designers (in general) and most players aren’t actually looking at what makes a healthy, long term, viable game.

Neither are the anet ‘designers’ then.

You can legitimately make that argument the moment polls were allowed. Effectively, players were allowed to decide their fate. So we get scoring (for the good/bad that does). So unsurprising…players voted for something to help them artificially win at the game more. Even though population coverage solutions would have helped in that regard, and then some.

Before that however, yes, they were still designers. Yes, it takes more than posting a written document on a forum to be a game developer. I still hold by that players are super good at giving feeling, and discovering METAs/Bugs. After finding the METAs(includes siege placements, not just skills)…WvWs as a whole can agree that balance is an issue. Unfortunately, some suggestions are not necessarily good on the entire game mode however. Like a lot of which is posted here. At the very least some posts manage to state their bias for a play style which is nice.

Is WvW too big?

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Nope. Not really, especially compared to the other parts of this MMO.

So again, it’s not too big. In fact, it’s rather small if you consider how many people were there at launch (keeping in mind different timezones throw in other issues). It just hasn’t changed significantly to bring people back to play for long. We are, after all, back to the same home borderland map that was there at launch 4-5 years ago.

Can we help WvW by Presentation?

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

If you think so, then great! Me too. This topic is about presentation. This is not about manners, or some interpretation of professional writing. The goal is to help you to clarify your idea. So, hear me out. Having seen countless posts over the 4 odd years in this section I can safely say a majority of posts can be skipped over.

This is where my opinion starts, and here are classified post for ones I’d avoid, or that I couldn’t take seriously:

Misuse of Q/As : This post essentially has a topic title that isn’t even a question, and asks a question that more than likely can’t be answered by the community.

Grocery Lists : Often these come off as demanding, and don’t even ask for contributions from the community. These style of topics have been rare recently.

Polls : Creating an effective poll is hard enough. The Poll form itself means that while players interact with the creator, they barely interact with each other. At best, I got a chuckle out of another player.

Advertisements : Yes, this self promotion is a form of advertisement (and that is okay!). Often there are posts that promote a video with no context, and I tend to skip these (others might care, and that’s fine). I am okay with using hyperlinks to leave the forums if the OP provides discussion alongside. In my opinion, pure game play videos just don’t help me.

Poor Critiques : This usually stems from lacking the vocabulary to give a decent critique, and I’ll try to provide those finicky words. In this example it is about map design, but the OP doesn’t provide much substance beyond “sucks, OP, isn’t worth.” The words that would help involve Art and some know how of Game Types. If you wish to save time, and spend 10 dollars you can learn most of that funk here

TLDRs : A sad reality, but people don’t have time for all of that. What happened here is the OP got overly specific to each, and every class. If this happens to you, then I suggest to compliment your topic with a detailed video!

Bad Titles : You wouldn’t know from the title, but this was about removing downstate. If you can’t think of a title initially, then I’d advise naming your topic last (it will come by then usually).

I do not hate any of the above users. They are merely mentioned for learning!

Pretend Commenter Voice: Well gee, this is sounding an awfully like that “Inappropriate Forum Topics” post!

Can we help WvW by Presentation?

Chinchilla.1785

No, but wait there’s more! I am merely suggesting posting topics in the above formats is going to net fewer discussions. I am not saying they all lead to a toxic environment.

Again, my opinion, I have classified some posts that I do pay attention to:

Good Titles : Having a reliable title sets the stage for discussion. The OP is about the title…and again I advise naming your topic last.

Announcements : Usually these need to be informative, or lead to community events. Being the stickied thread there was some amount of reason put into it.

Some Details : Emphasis on “Some,” and most importantly the OP isn’t writing a short story’s length.

Gives Sources : Yep, it’s an ANET post, but the OP does provide at least 1 source that is relevant to the topic (that then cites more).

Notice that these topics are not perfect! It’s fine as long as you engage your audience about any miscommunication.

Pretend Commenter Voice: Super! So gimmie the knowledge to attract attention to my idea.

What? This isn’t about click bait…fine, understand this first.

Short hand for communication is like this: Your Idea -> Your Execution of that Idea -> Their Interpretation of Your Idea. When they respond, then they follow that same chain back to you. Your goal is to make those three things match up initially to reduce miscommunication.

Here is an EZmode check list to help with that:

1. Does my title have mostly relevant words from my post? (Sets the stage of incoming traffic)
2. Is my idea within the first few sentences? (This gets to the point)
3. Who is my topic excluding, and including? (Mainly important for Game Design itself, but forces you to sympathize)
4. Do I have a source or link for more detail? (Support your idea so it can stand on its own)
5. Am I using sensible vocabulary for my topic? (Specific words can save on word count, and show some level of credibility)

Sorry, I don’t have an acronym. I hope this helped you to help WvW that will help players to play…the helping chain! Now here is where I ask you guys. Was this useful? Most importantly. Why or why not?

Blob wars

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

Is there a solution to this?

Yes, one prominent way is map design. It is what changes game play tactics (yes, blobbing is a tactic).

The non-hypothetical example is Guild Wars 1 Alliance battles (12 v 12).

There were 6-7 un-walled objectives on the field of play. When one side “blobbed” up to become 12, the other side could out play with maybe 1 group of 4 capping around quickly, and returning to attack the “blob’s” back.

A simple formula for this map design is as follows:

1. Closer objectives favor blobbing (Ebg), however too far away objectives favor ktraining (Eotm), so seeking a medium distance is probably conducive to more mixed play (I don’t consider alpines to be this).

2. Un-walled objectives : do not require a blob

3. Single walled objectives : do not require a blob, but take longer to solo

4. Double walled objectives : require a blob

So given all of the above, you could design a map with more un-walled objectives or/and single walled walled. You could also design the map around that medium distance between objectives.

I am against statistical adjustments to “counter” blobbing. That’s more artificial to punish the tactic, rather than allowing another strategy to out play blobbing.

What do you think the motivation was for those people that transferred to Blackgate? How does that motivation relate to your observation of low population?

Because some servers pay players to transfer over with a promise of better quality game play, only to take breaks when strong competition shows up? This drain other server of Commanders to follow. No Commander tag means no one to follow and means no fights.

By putting each server on a color like EotM, then you’ll always have people to play with, and play against. No need to link servers to each other anymore.

Since we assumed everyone was already on Blackgate. Everyone will be on the same color, and your solution won’t work regardless. Because I believe you never meant that everyone was actually on Blackgate we can omit this.

In theory your Eotm conversion works. In practice, I wouldn’t force it upon “normal WvW.” Rather just add EBG map to Eotm. Borderlands maps shouldn’t really be included for they’re not radial symmetrical. This way people can retain their “Server Identity” for those that still praise such a thing, and everyone else can flock to the added Eotm maps.

Just go the free market approach and let the queue times deter people from transferring. Less management too. Better yet, let people know what the queues were on reset last week so people can get a preview before attempting to stack an already beefy server…

Despite all the hate BG gets. It is filled with guilds that were there for more than 6months (REV, KNT, GoF, FOO, AHMA, SG, SW, XVX). So I don’t don’t buy the transfer wars argument in 2017. Does that mean guilds haven’t transferred? Nope, [RISE] did. But NA guilds barely impact the coverage war that shifts the matches wildly. The dust settled months ago, and I suspect the coverage is mostly because people stopped moving ever since it became full for fear they’d be locked out….which is ironic given the intended purpose of FULL status.

Reset every 24 hours

in WvW

Posted by: Chinchilla.1785

Chinchilla.1785

The benefit of daily reset is to reduce snowballing caused by coverage, and having another chance for a different match up for shorter increments. That’d be about it.

And how exactly does it reduce snowballing caused by coverage? The server with the nightcrew will literally win every matchup if it’s a daily reset. Is that a reduction in snowballing caused by coverage?

If this system was so great, EoTM would dominate WvW. It doesnt. Because short matchups become totally meaningless and even during those 4h, coverage and the dominating server snowballing points is still everything.

Snowballing in this context is the T3 structures that were “night capped” that get carried over into “prime time.” If we assume the current reset time was for every day this would be less of an issue. So, the NA/EU prime time doesn’t have to deal with flipping their home borderland’s T3 Garrison or spawn keep in ebg all because of lapses in coverage.

It doesn’t solve coverage. You will never solve coverage unless your game’s session is equivalent to the average player’s session (probably 30 minutes-2 hours max). Longer play sessions lead to player burnout if you don’t believe tournaments were an indicator of that. Of course, tournaments had an illusion of meaningful rewards so people pushed themselves over to only quit forever.

EoTM’s biggest issue is the map. Idk how many actively play it, nor do we know how many actively play ‘normal WvW.’ So let’s not try to state it as proof of anything in regards to activity, yes?

Just another solution to PPT

Chinchilla.1785

Aptly named topic!

Another solution that can contribute to alienation of players. Why should 10 people bouncing around not be able to contribute if say…ebg is queue? Also, as already mentioned, it would lead to “blob hopping.”

Now for a suggestion! So many of these topics have popped up…I have seen some that hold some merit.

First, remove “ticking” for points. This directly stops “runaway” scores.
Second, reward for active plays such as capturing, and per upgrade (both giving increased points per tier). This fulfills the “you can fully play.” Consequently it could make PPK matter.
Third, um…profit?

In summary, this equalizes the value of scoring in anyway imaginable across all locations/timezone. It wont fix populations that is up to communities, and/or anet (such as marking “full” )

Also to end anyone saying,“Who cares about scoring anyway!” It matters when it determines who you end up fighting. This especially matters for current NA servers where populations are staggering bellow t2-t3. So making sure the scores accurately reflect activity through scoring active plays helps to match servers.
