D/D ele: which nerfs?

in Elementalist

Colt.9051

Literally just nerf cantrips and buff the other utility types, and everything will be a-ok.

Uh, no. How is that only nerfing d/d ele? This is the kind of very bad blind nerf we don’t want.

Our only meta build for the entire history of the game has been cantrips + water + arcane. I think that a good solution would change that, at the very least.

Like it or not, the core of D/D ele is water cantrip synergy, and reallocating that power is probably the only thing that will actually create build variety.

How about just buffing the other utilities that don’t see the light of day so that they can at least have SOME synergy that’s similar to what cantrips can do, but to another aspect. Signets ever since the Fire Aura on signet use got taken out, they seriously lack any synergy on any traitline. The only traitline it has going for it is earth… In ONE trait for a CD reduction and passive effect continuation after using the active. Signets pretty much are condition based, and there are condi damage traits in the earth line so to make signets on par with cantrips, make it so they have synergy in another trait line, like air so they can give some defensive effect when they use signets. For example, an air trait for signets so that a signet activarion also gives you 3 seconds of superspeed, or in arcane so if you activate a signet, depending on the signet used you get an aura for 3 seconds based on the element of the signet. (The heal signet can give a Light Aura for example) so to make these more viable. Glyphs are also on the kitten end because of no trait synergy. Glyphs create a wide variety of effects ranging from summoning lesser elementals to reviving allies to creating storms. Make some traits that will enhance the effects of these utilities such as duration or damage. Arcana is already at a good place as far as damage and defensive traits go and reenforces the glass ele style really well. Conjures are situational at best but I won’t go in depth with them, but I will say the trait in fire is an OK start, but there needs to be more of a reason to use conjures besides icebowing.

Glyphs and Signets need their own identity on where they fit in a build because as of now, they both don’t have any!

Colt.9051

Guys… Just wait until burn damage gets nerfed. That’s the MAIN way that cele D/D eles can sustain so well. Don’t be so hasty to neuter weapon skills and traits when no other class’s has been and we ALL know that burn damage in general is stupidly OP… If you think of how Ring of Fire’s OP ts because of 2 things. One, burn damage is OP on EVERY class that can reapply it fast enough and 2, don’t repeatedly cross the red ring or you’re asking to get burned to death. The latter is honestly is a L2P issue when in the grand scope of things there’s MUCH more OP things out there than cele eles, like condi PU mesmers who can perma stealth pretty much better than thieves while still spitting out clones while still maintaining stealth. Or Burn Guardians who can again deal ridiculous burn damage because burns themselves are too high. Focus on the GAME BREAKING issues at hand before calling out stupid nerfs that’s going to affect non cele builds too.

As far as skill goes behind the build playing D/D cele compared to most other meta builds isnt mindless to play. You still have to know what skills to rotate to, and how to change it depending on what situation. As for the other aforementioned meta builds, usually you pretty much have a few “I win” buttons or passive mechanics at your disposal while cele ele has no such a thing.

Thought I’d post this here to gather any feedback/criticisms on my ele even fights/outnumbered play, or anything relatable to the editing of the video. I am not new to elementalists by a longshot and love the class to death, no matter what people might say otherwise! I do play a partially-cele ele build nowadays post-patch as my non-cele gear before the patch hit didn’t give me an optimal stat spread anymore. My current does just about the same job as my old build did, but even better with the added burn pressure/sustain and might stacking ability, not to mention blind on burns! So yes, I am traited in Fire/Water/Arcana as I find this trait set has a great synergy with cele based eles especially! That’s all I’ll reveal for now though since (If it isn’t already meta) I wouldn’t wanna potentially fight a bunch of “me’s” …I’m weird. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the video, and more in the past and in the future if you wanna see more!

P.S: Yes, I know the video is long as balls, but I had so many good fights that month

Found another bug related to Lightning Rod!

If 2 eles that are fighting each other both have Lightning Rod traits, and one gets disabled and uses their Shocking Aura, and the other ele also has their Shocking Aura up, when the other ele attacks the still disabled ele, Lightning Rod will proc 10+ times (Counted 13 by the screenshots) on both eles, being able to do MASSIVE damage to each other. It was quite funny seeing that happen but let’s prevent us from nuking the ever living crap out of each other! xD (Skip to about 3:58 if you want to get past the jargon of reproducing the bug) Also Glen, if you get to adding this to the bug forum topic can the video link also be added to that description bug for clarification? Thanks!

Stats you wanna hit for WvW Roaming?

Colt.9051

Usually I find having about 1900-2000 power sufficient, since a lot of your power will also come from maintained might stacks as well, so it doesn’t hurt to have much of a lower spectrum of this. 30% crit rate is what I usually shoot for too, as with high fury uptime of eles you’ll get a 50% crit chance pretty much. As far as toughness goes I usually try to stay above 2600 armor. Any less imo is a bit too squishy and pretty susceptible to bursts. Vitality is usually one of my lesser worries of stats since I almost always run at least 4 or 6 in water, but 1400 vitality is usually a great mark to hit for it. 1300ish is fine as well. This is all my personal opinions for my ele roam builds but you can shoot for anything higher or lower in value

What I like about making ele roaming builds is where a lot of different specs and classes can’t really take full advantage of mix and matched sets, eles are pretty much one of the main exceptions to that where having a diverse set of armors is usually a good thing Nowdays using a mix of anything with Knights/Zerkers/Cavalier/Soldiers is usually good :P

Nah, man, I meant your single target pressure – u got only 3 big damage skills on big city and small amount of permanent damage(little amount of condi and rifle1). I don’t remember number of video but u and thief were fighting one ele for about 3 minutes and didn’t kill him. That is awful, seems u can’t solo anyone except maybe thief, or uplevelers. Try to get more damage skills – ft2, SD, mine.

I don’t rely on big bursts of damage much as my only real big bursts are Jump Shot, Blunderbuss and Prybar, rather I let my condi damage and duration work as my sustain, as with Incendiary Powder and Rocket Boots burn ticks about 550ish to 630ish a second (depending on my might stacks) on top of any direct damage done. Blunderbuss and Prybar also do a fair amount of damage after application as well and will last a while. That’s the beauty of engis, and I’m happy with it the way it is.

To be fair, that ele (still think you’re talking about the first vid) he was fairly tanky and did fairly well at kiting me. If you saw any of the later vids and fights, you might see despite my “shortcomings”, I don’t have too much of a problem taking people down in 1v1s or 1v2s that aren’t thieves or up levels. Yes the first video is bad, I was just getting used to engi again then, but it does get better and better, trust me on that.

And I did say this is a more DEFENSIVE spin on a celestial build. This isn’t made to specifically mow down the masses, but rather with maximum mobility and survivability in mind, but IMO it does still have decent DPS too…

man, your dps is realy aweful… if u dont like bombs or nades try SD or even FT…
u got so little pressure – it is about your mates to kill someone, u just cant realy hurt.

engi+thief that cant kill ele on their own supply – that makes me sad

and u need to try to build some rotation, cause u spend a lot of cd on nothing – for example use your magnet after net shot or overcharge then enemy wouldnt dodge it
use your blasts and leaps on your water – you can jump shot(or acid bomb) regenerating mist

on most videos i dont see you using food (condi duration + or -)

This build is moreso focused around single target pressure and soft CCs, so its probably better suited for solo roaming than groups, which was mostly my purpose for it.(Though a lot of times I’d wind up having a guildmate or a couple come along) Yeah, without nades or bombs, AoE pressure is next to none, but what it mainly excells at mostly are 1v1s, duels, and anything else really small scale… prolly maximum effectiveness is like versus 3ish ppl. I usually prefer 1v1s or 1v2s most, and this build does well against those odds.

I admit, u might be talking about the 1st vid, which is terrabad, and meant to be so b/c I was just starting to get used to my engi by that point, so I didn’t have a lot of experience. (Btw the other guy was another engi, I think with a similar build to me) I’ve gotten much more used to this by now compared to then (Which was 4 months ago). I’m getting my rotations down now! I normally Magnet Pull, Prybar and Rocket Kick to apply conf and burn. By then most ppl evade right after the rocket kick lands so then I Net Shot after the evade and Overcharge Shot them, after which I then Jump Shot and Blunderbuss them. That’s my usual opening rotation nowadays anyways, but people can be unpredictable, so I only act based on most probable actions depending on who I face. I don’t really prefer to follow one set rotation. As far as blasting in water fields, I admit I still have work to improve doing that on the fly, but I’m getting better. Also for foods, I don’t really get to micromanage my foods that well, but I normally use Koi Cakes and Toxic Focusing Crystals to make my condis last anyways. Its tough when 1 timer is on 20 mins and one’s on 30 mins… but hey, if I win a fight w/o em, its more rewarding, right? Thanks for the critisism!

I also recently made a build using similar traits and gear, but I use bombs and pistol/shield instead, so my AoE pressure is amazing, at the cost of less mobility. That should start showing up in future vids.

First time making my vids public to forumers and seeing all the awesome roaming videos I’ve seen on these forums kinda made me nervous about making my own, but since I got a new comp, I’m deciding to give it a shot to show everyone what I’m made of with my own defensive spin on a celestial build inspired mostly from a vid I saw here about 5ish months ago. (User didn’t disclose their build so I guestimated and adjusted to my liking. Thankfully that person’s playstyle mirrored my first build; an apothecary engi build so it was quite easy to get used to from there, cept for using a rifle…) I know I might get some flak for not using bombs or nades, but I’m satisfied with my DPS without them. I’m focused more on active mobility and kiting and good HoTs to better deal with pesky condi builds. I won’t exactly disclose details on it tho, but any critiques and tips are always helpful, but most of all, I just hope everyone enjoys the videos! I know these are quite long, but I do have fun bonus footage on some of them if u keep watching! And I know they’re quite dated footage from WvW Seasons, but I’m catching up! >.<

[WvW] What If: Hammer Stun was Removed?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Colt.9051

Colt.9051

It’s moreso the issue of highly rampant amounts of immobilizations that tend to screw people over more than hammer stuns in my opinion. Granted the only class that might be truely screwed as far as hammer stuns are necros, but all in all, we have some ways of dealing with it. Yea getting caught with little to no stun breaks against a hammer train is pretty lame, but usually that requires a good amount of ppl applying said stuns at the same time… Where as u have immobilize which can be applied by only 2 or 3 people and can last 10+ seconds, most classes have VERY easy access to this condi/soft CC, you can’t stun break or teleport out of it (in most cases, but ur still stuck in place) and gotta burn a cleanse (that’s IF you don’t have cover condis over the immobilize.) this I find WAAAAY more cheese.

Edit: I do realize in a Zerg setting this might be less relevant of an issue, though in smaller cases like roaming its more of a prominent issue. Either way, mobility is key to survival no matter what setting.

Against these loggers, anyone logging off mid-fight in combat will still have a death counted towards them, you still get credit for “killing” them, and they will wake up in PvE dead anyways. Elemental shielding UP?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Colt.9051

Colt.9051

Protection boons usually doesn’t run very high uptimes anyways, and elementalists have an abundance of protection sources anyways. D/D and D/F eles especially have quite a few sources for aura procs as well.

D/D and D/F can use:
Frost Aura: Water #4 skill (Dagger offhand)
Shocking Aura: Lightning #3 skill
Fire Aura: Fire #5 (Focus offhand) and Earth #3 Magnetic Leap though a fire field
If with a mesmer, they can use ethereal fields and use the aforementioned leap through there and…
Frozen Burst/Earthquake/Magnetic Wave: Water #3 and Earth #4 (For both dagger and focus) respectively for Chaos Aura.

Eles can also proc protecion from their Armor of Earth cantrip (From the Earth III trait as well) As well as a protection proc if traited 20 into arcana with the VIII Elemental Attunement Trait.

(I’m not going to get into using certain rune sets that can proc auras since that’s pretty situational, but certain runes can proc auras as well that you can benefit from this trait)

If you can cycle a good amount of these protection procs with decent boon uptime, elementalists can run near perma protection. Believe me, I dueled a celestial ele last night using this trait and 50% boon duration from Rune of the Water and he had nearly permanent protection, and admittedly kicked my ele’s kitten throughly since I couldn’t sustain as well as him and I was running a burstier build but with the near perma protection I couldn’t dent his HP very much.

in Elementalist

Some ppl still find celestial armors pretty adequate for their builds, though I thankfully already sought out my alternatives before I fully committed to crafting a celestial armor set of my own for my ele. I find some mix of Soldier’s/Cavalier’s/Knight’s/Zerker’s yields good results with high base power and modest crit damage and toughness, especially when coupled with strength runes. Its mainly how you wanna balance between toughness and burst with how many of each stat combinations to fit your playstyle.

This may have been talked about a few times before, but I’d like to say that being inflicted with the chill condition on an Elementalist is currently badly balanced right now.

Elementalists are the only class that has their “weapon swap” abilities get severely slowed down when chilled thus screwing us over from being able to do next to nothing if we have a long duration chill on us. I must ask that these attunement swaps be uneffected by a chill condition (any skills within that attunement are still affected accordingly of course) for at least more of a sem-balance for elementalists. thoughts?

This makes me raise the question of if the OP has ever had the experience to play on any servers T3 and under. There is a reason why a vast majority of these players prefer to stick to their own servers instead of joining the T1/T2 bandwagon. Personally I enjoy being in the lower tier servers because of a plethora of reasons, mainly that I WvW with the same people I know and have grown to love, there isn’t a constant zerg ball running around lagging everything in its wake, and you get fun small roaming fights as well a lot more often. Yes, there’s the issue of coverage which throws things off balance a lot of times, but we’re all willing to look past all that and still enjoy where we are.

All in all, merging everyone into 6 servers is generally a really bad idea, and I would quit WvW if I ever had to blob v blob war 24 hours a day. It’s skillless and boring.

There is a reason I laugh at every single “pr0” engi I come across in game.

The worst are the “skilled” engies running perplex runes

To be fair, most classes can run perplexity runes and become stupidly OP if their build revolves around the move set, but engis do have a high learning curve the have to pass as well to get used to all of those kits and skills. Personally I’ve run the perplexity engi right after taking a break from my ele, altho I still prefer at most times to use my ele, as (with most engis) they can’t take other condi builds well at all, unless they run Automated Response, but even then, if it winds up fighting a burst condi build and power build, the engi will fall quickly once its blocks are burned. Also as mentioned above, I prefer my ele again to roam over the engi b/c I have better stun breaks available. As an engi, more often than not, unless you’re traited for it, you can be stunlocked to oblivion.

We mostly make our builds as similar as possible to the builds we use in WvW but I usually love to build my eles as various hybrid builds, as eles hit like a wet blanket when full or near full bunker and glass just folds over in like 2 hits… My guildie also built his warrior as a hybrid but more on the DPS side using hammer/GS whereas I made a more offensive 0/15/10/15/30 D/D build for my ele. The result of many of these fights wound up being ties, though not to discredit my guildie, as he does play a great warrior, in some instances I was able to get great bursts on him that could get him down to maybe 25% health at times, though in order to sustain my damage to keep him from healing it back with his heal signet, I’d have to stick around in melee range auto attacking (which is only fairly effective in air attune, and even then doesn’t impact warriors that much unless it crits) until my burst skills got off CD again (in which most of us know ele weapon skill CDs on their biggest burst skills are just so long!) 90% of the time I can’t keep that pressure up because I’m so busy trying to avoid the retaliation of hammer stuns, and usually if I got caught in a full hammer chain, I’d be down to about 25% to 40% health from around full health so staying in melee range would be detrimental so I would be forced to kite and read his attacks. Unfortunately by the time I feel the hammer stun chain is over, he’s already recovered his HP back to about 60 to 75% health so I’d have to setup another perfect chain burst, which is too far and between for eles. I can forget about fighting and winning against him if he makes a build that leans more to the extreme bunker or extreme DPS or even extreme condi as I usually don’t last long as I can’t pressure the warrior hard enough without me taking gobs of damage as collateral.

The main problem eles have against warriors I feel is that eles lack much in sustainable damage (Mainly in auto attacks compared to almost all other classes) to really outDPS the regen of a warrior, as burst damage from eles usually aren’t enough. Even worse is the class’s direct lack of access to poison to be able to counter that problem. Perhaps if some of our earth skills incorporated some poison mechanics into them, warriors wouldn’t be as big of a threat to eles as they are right now, and it could also open up some viable ideas for condition build elementalists as well.

The problem with healing singet is not any specific build its the heal itself. Compare it to any other heal in the game and its way better. Singet of restoration from ele. 200hp per cast each auto attack takes 1 second. So you have to actively cast to get half of healing singet. If ele had hs people would call it op. If guard had 400+ hps on top of thier f whatever healing and the big elite heal they would be considered op. Mesmer singet has to have 3 clones out to still get considerable less than hs. Mesmer with striaght 400 hps all the time would be op. The only comparable heal to healing singet is healing turret from engi which is also one of the reasons condi bunker decap engi is so annoying in spvp as well.

I wouldn’t really compare heal turret to the heal signet as it isn’t a passive heal, and you’d have to spec pretty hard into heal power to make the full use of, where as warrior heal signet has stupid high base healing, even with no to low heal power added.

^ Sure. Just double the cooldowns. Except for Mist form, it has enough of a cooldown already.

No… Our skills already have too long of a cooldown… At the very least they should make a lot of these defensive skills on par with other classes…

On topic: I kinda like lightning flash as it is, but I do prefer its stun break qualities back… It kinda doesn’t make sense that it doesn’t when comparing to a mesmer’s blink.

Passive conditions ticking away? How did those conditions get on you, I wonder?

Oh right! You were attacked and didn’t defend yourself. What do you think would happen if a Power build attacked you and you didn’t defend yourself?

I seriously laugh every time I hear someone make that very statement about getting hit by conditions. Yes, you’re right in that we got hit by a skill we may have failed to evade or block or something, and we take damage over time for it, BUT the thing that makes people cry that the DOTs are OP is that there is currently NO direct ways of being able to mitigate how much damage these conditions do to you over time. Comparative to a power based attack in which you can mitigate how much damage is done to you via your toughness stat and somewhat your vitality, you only have vitality as your only pseudo way to mitigate condi damage, and it isn’t saying much. Certain classes simply have it better than others when it comes to healthpools to survive condition damage, and certain classes have it better than others when it comes to having access to condition removals as well. A lot of times you may have to specialize your builds with as much condition removals as possible, and that can sometimes be unappealing, even disadvantageous as you’ll likely be missing out on some needed offense or physical defense if it comes to it. Nobody likes specializing to be able to counter one condi build to get wrecked by any other build out there. The rock-paper-scissor aspect is a bad way to go with those builds.

Also as mentioned many times before, condition damage builds mostly tend to lean towards the tanky side because the main stat(s) that affects how much condition damage does is well… Condition damage (And to a certain extent precision for certain builds). It’s a lot easier to invest in being bulky with heal power/toughness/vitality along with the condi damage as we have several armor sets that tailor to that, namely settler’s/apothecary, dire, shaman’s and somewhat rabid. Compare to most power builds which have to invest in 3 stats to be effective power-wise, which are power, precision and critical damage. More often than not to achieve a good balance of the three, some survivability will have to be sacrificed to make the most effect of your damage, in which condition based gear does not suffer much of the same issue. So condition builds are more often than not generally harder to kill off as they typically survive as well as any bunker build and can STILL have good to great damage output, something most power builds can’t achieve.

I actually just made a thread about this a few hours before this saying the same thing! I don’t see why this can’t be done! (Altho I’d prefer not to have to use a hairstyle kit to change a hair accessory to be honest.)

Too little hair accessory color choices!

With the new hairstyles and makeovers we have gotten in the past few months, I’ve gotta say I do like a lot of them, I really do! The thing that bugs me about these new updates, however are that our accessory color choices remain unchanged. We’re still currently stuck with the 21 color starting palette, and most, if not all of the colors more often than not often conflict and clash with matching certain color themes with armor or forces you to use a certain color scheme to one of these color, thus ruining certain hairstyles, especially if you use multiple armors for certain themes on one charactor.

PLEASE Anet, I beg of you to let us have more options with changing these accessory colors such as letting us use our own saved dyes to dye our hair accessory! (I’d prefer this not to force us to have to use a Hair-Change Kit…) I’d love to be able to at the very least have more color options to mix and match my different color schemes and not have an oddly colored head accessory… (In my case, if I could use a celestial dye on my head accessory, this would solve my dilemma at least)

[PvP] Warrior's (Axe) Evicerate too strong?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Colt.9051

Colt.9051

For an up to 7 second cool-down (If traited for burst), and about a half-second tell time before you get hit, it’s starting to become one of the most highly abused skills I’ve seen most warriors use nowadays. It hits way too hard with any power warrior with high adrenaline regen for a skill to hit that hard every 7 seconds. Compared to most other burst skills from any class that can hit about as hard as an evicerate can, usually they’re balanced out with either long cooldowns or long channel times or are otherwise generally hard to land much like Hundred Blades or Churning Earth for Eles or even a thief’s backstab to some extent, in which you have to hit someone from behind for full effectiveness, which if you’re an avid player, you can avoid with some fancy footwork.

Most warriors often carry a Shield or a Rush/Kick skill to often guarantee an evicerate hit, especially when traited with Unsuspecting Foe for a high damage near-guaranteed critical hit. Most classes (Besides maybe a PU Mesmer or an Evade thief) lack the stun breaks and endurance regen to reliably be able to avoid evicerate hits that often. On my 2,640 armor ele (Not really that tanky, but in no ways squishy) I can get hit with a 8k evicerate every 7 seconds from a glass or semi-glass cannon warrior if I don’t mist form or dodge the stun/evicerate combo, this effectively shaving off about half my HP in one blow with not that much time to react to the dodge or enough stun breaks to usually last a prolonged fight. (Cantrip CDs are more an ele prob anyways)

I ask for either the damage for this skill to be reduced to give a fair chance for most players to be able to have a more forgiving time against a high damage burst skill with a really short CD or increase the “tell time” for the skill to give us a better chance of being able to dodge the big damage from this skill.

Edit: Tested WvW numbers, not sPvP, sorry if any misunderstandings there

My D/D WvW Build, Critique?

Sitting at about 2k armor, you’re going to be one very squishy ele despite the trait setup for survival. As oZii pointed out, you can opt to balance your stats to stay around 2.6kish armor and get off about 1300-1400ish vit. It’ll come at a bit of a price for power/precision and crit damage, but the current setup you have doesn’t synergise well between your glassy gear and defensive trait setup. Either you can use a trait/utility setup that will help take advantage of your burst damage (Wouldn’t really recommend it for WvW roaming tho) or complement your gear with more survivability options. Knights/Cavaliers/Soldiers/Valkyrie/Cleric with some Zerker’s sprinkled are always a nice combination, just experiement and set goals on where you want a certain stat to be :P I’d share my gearset which I feel is well balanced but I don’t really disclose builds I make publicly >.<

(Also the above link uses all ascended gears, so figuratively, it’ll be HELLA costly if u go exactly with that haha…)

Edit: If you’re looking for a boon duration setup, 2 Travelers/Monk/Water runes are usually best to use for up to 75% boon duration. Personally I settle with a full set of Traveler’s runes for the extra stats and movespeed without Signet of Air taking up space. 45% boon duration is pretty sufficient enough for me :P

Personally I like the alternative better. I can’t really see having a 75s (60s traited) defensive skill used to inflict a chill and vuln (which can be inflicted rather easily) all that beneficial compared to gaining regen on getting critted every 10s, which helps quite a bit if you have traited with Cleansing Water in regards to condi removals.
