When I was going for 100% world completion on my ele I was in the 15-25 Maguuma map (forgot the name,) and I was on a hill and looked down to see a warrior trying to fight a Hylek champ below. I jump down to help him and we get the champ down to about 50% before the warrior gets downed.

I start rezzing him, he’s gaining health faster than the champ is dealing it and I get him up to about 80%. Suddenly he pops up off the ground.

He used Vengence…

I always support personal RP features like this.

It’s these sort of things that are supposed to separate MMOs from the other genres.

1. Some people play MMOs like FPSs and they are just in it for round after round of combat.

2. Some people play MMOs like RTSs and MOBAs and they are all about crunching those numbers down and optimizing every millisecond of an encounter.

3. Some people play MMOs like a second life where they care about their characters, their friendships, their guilds and the look of their gear.

Take the aspects of 1 and 2 out and you still have an MMO. Take the aspects of 3 out and you’ve changed the genre. So this marriage thing, it’s a valid suggestion. A little something to separate our characters from walking metas. To be more than numbers, stats and strategies.

I understand the opposition, but I don’t agree. I think anyone who has spent enough time on the internet will have built up a pretty hard shell against drama and the other atrocities committed in the text of the web. If you care too much, you only become a part of it.

I’m not someone who likes gambling on keys, but I couldn’t not have a shot at such a fashionable prize! …..

….thus endeth the lesson….

Gotta hand it to Anet.

Well there’s nothing wrong with buying gems if you can afford it. If you stop buying food to instead buy gems to try for a chance at an item that in the end is meaningless to anyone but you while you play a cyber-game… well, THEN you have a problem. And let’s face it, 99% of the GW2 population can’t afford to shell out 3500g (in game wealth) for one item, cuz… nerfs.

Purchasing gems isn’t the issue, gambling is, and it is incredibly stupid no matter how much money you have.

Well buying a stock is a gamble. Warren Buffet must be a complete moron.

Except with BL chests you can’t say: “I expect hair kits to rise today after X business thing happens.”

Actually it’s generally not good to kill off characters at all. There’s a time and place, but its rarer than most writers think. It’s thought of as the easymode solution to inflicting some sort of deep feeling on either another character or the reader/watcher.

Personally I’m not too bothered by the way they handled Belinda. Though I was hoping they would do more with her. However, if they did do more with her I’d suggest she not die at all.

Just saying all of these suggestions to have made her more like Tybalt and the others aren’t as grand as they sound. I’ll be honest, on my first playthrough I liked Forgal. When he died I didn’t feel despair or loss, I just felt “oh great, so they’re doing it this way.”

If you want some good examples of death/leaving actually affecting the audience, check out the show M*A*S*H.

Game almost never crashes

Megaservers are amazing

What has a satisfying “endgame” anyway?

I never really got the grind complaints about GW2. The game is equally unrewarding everywhere, so go do whatever you want.

If you’re like me, you wouldn’t like crafting in just about any MMO anyway.

The classes themselves are not boring. However, we have not seen much in the way of new stuff for them.

The gem store news isn’t annoying. The rewards for gems vs the rewards for gameplay will still drive you crazy though.

Overall that’s looking at a lot of the flaws directly and ignoring the good stuff.

Personally every time I go to another MMO and that STUPID screen pops up saying “Need” “Greed” “Pass,” I come running back to GW2.

Is a Ranger just a Warrior with a pet?

in Ranger

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

It sorta goes like this:

In PvP, warriors and rangers are TOTALLY different.

In PvE, essentially a ranger is sort of like a modded warrior with a pet, yes.

The major differences are:

WARRIORS don’t have the accident prone auto-pilot auto attack that is mostly useless in PvE.

RANGERS have to do more work to keep their DPS up (watching pet’s HP and such.)

WARRIORS do not require as much help from their team to reach full potential.

RANGERS work very well with eles and maximize healing and summoned weapon DPS.

Both a RANGER and a WARRIOR are required to maximize team DPS buffs.

WARRIORS have a 5 second weapon swap trait that would be useful to melee RANGERS because the barrage/rapidfire combo on the LB can be applied at point blank range but does not require 10 seconds.

Basically it’s a bunch of little things like that.

How to record with good FPS?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

There are a few things that drop FPS that can make it difficult recording on a laptop.

1. The hard drive. It’s often better to record on fast hard drives that are separate from the one you’re running the game on. You won’t be able to fit a separate hard drive in there and I have no clue if USB externals can keep up.

2. The graphics card, CPU and RAM. Laptops usually essentially have the “lite” versions of most of their components, and they share resources more than their desktop counterparts. So you can suffer more of a compounding FPS drop when stressing any one of those parts.

If you can bootcamp into Windows, you can try MSI Afterburner. That usually does pretty well, but I can’t make any promises. Especially since I wouldn’t be too surprised if the QT one was already pretty decent.

You can also try lowering your resolution ingame, and lowering the res at the video records as well. Experiment with different recording settings.

LB and staff have to be my highest.

Ranger, Ele and Guardian.

LB is my top scorer because I did a lot of zerg events and open world PvE, was too lazy to level a guardian early on, and do not use the SB unless I’m doing PvP.

Celestial/Zerker ele is just too fun with a staff to resist.

If you remove open-world kills. 1h sword by tens of thousands.

Major Griefing During Guild Puzzle

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

I’m pretty sure what they’re doing here is absolutely a bannable offense. It’s the equivalent of intentionally bugging out an event so it can’t be completed.

Oh I’m sure it is. If it isn’t, it should be.

The tough part about it for guild leaders is keeping the entire guild from cussing the guy out. Sure he deserves it, but the GMs will probably be reading through those logs. Makes their job easier if they can tell the griefing is being done to innocents instead looking like an action in some drama/dispute.

Major Griefing During Guild Puzzle

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

In this case you would email support.

However for any MMO community you can use an old “trick” I used to use in RuneScape and Guild Wars 1 way back. Sometimes you can tell a player needs to be reported but hasn’t exactly broken any rules yet. So you need to draw out the evidence without becoming an issue yourself. Do this:

1. PM the person with a neutral/nice message asking them to kindly stop.
2. A good portion of the time they respond with something uncalled for and unrepeatable on these forums.
3. Report them for harassment/offensive language.

Do not try to aggro them with words. The goal isn’t to start a fight. The goal is to let their reportable qualities surface on their own. Make sure YOU do nothing wrong.

Even if they only get a warning or a short ban, they become one step closer to being removed from the game. On a rare occasion they might even change their ways.

On rewards: Yes I agree completely with the idea that something that can be bought is not really a reward. We may have a ton of skins in the game already, but they aren’t really giving us a reward reason to hype/play new content.

Instead of your friends telling you:

“Hey, come check out this new Dry Top place where you can work toward ninja armor!”

It’s:

“Hey come check out this new Dry Top place! Also you can buy this ninja costume with money or go back to wherever and farm champs to get it!”

[Suggestion] New Elite Raids

in Living World

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

I have to admit, when I was a kid and just getting into MMOs I was completely amazed by big world events/raids. The 1-3 hour wait was the experience and the attempt was the reward.

However, over the years it’s gotten like rollercoasters. I’m done. I’ve been on so many, they are no longer worth the wait in line. Sure if I see one with a short line, I’ll zip right on up, but don’t expect me to come off the ride eyes wide and completely thrilled.

I have a job now. I’m not going to spend 2 of my 5 precious hours home-and-awake doing this stuff.

Marrionette was fine though, because I managed to pop right into many successful attempts within the last 10 mins before it started. If you had to nerf Teq and Wurms to be like that, I would honestly be all for it. Of course people would complain but let’s be honest: Skill isn’t what wins those, elitism is. It’s ALL about filtering out the new players and casuals.

Guild Wars 2: A Realm Reborn

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

Personally I think it would be much better if you weren’t Saving The World, and instead Personal Stories could be shorter episodes about your character, like “My quest to find my sister who was captured by a circus and the adventures I had along the way.” There’s a potential for a huge variety of such Personal Stories, whereas you can only really Save The World a couple of times before it gets really silly.

Everyone who ever writes a story needs to consider this.

In story telling, there is no strength in numbers:

300 people fought on the battlefield.
OR
10,000 people fought on the battlefield.

Both are infinitely less interesting than:

One person walked out into the battlefield alone and attempted to find a way to fight against himself pitting his arms against his legs.

Longbow = Useless

in Ranger

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

If you want to use LB in PvE, make sure you’ve gone full zerk.

Primary in sword melee, but keep that LB on reserve for:

1. Starting attacks vs stacks with Barrage
2. Inflicting Vulnerability
3. Stealthing to break aggro
4. Stepping back to heal or dodge an AoE, for that 10 secs that you’re stuck on LB you can deal some good damage with Barrage + Rapid Fire

If you can keep your pet alive and attacking, that moment where Barrage and Rapid Fire are hitting you could be doing more damage than during your standard melee auto attack.

Why is Logan Thackeray so pro?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

Still… I had more fun doing missions with Logan than I did Trahearne.

Logan may be an oaf and he may be whiny, but that’s character. Sometimes having a character you hate because of character traits can be good for a story.

Ironically, in the books, the Sylvari are just overflowing with personality and accidental humor. In the game, they are often used to fulfill a role in merging MMO and Story (like Trahearne or Scarlet.)

That’s where our main human rep (Logan) stands out. Aside from his role in Story Dungeons, he’s interesting to me. Even at times were I think he’s annoying, he’s still interesting. When he’s around, it’s the story of Logan and not just the story of that Trahearne guy we put there because we couldn’t possibly have every player as the main hero of Tyria.

That is why Logan is so pro.

“I’ll see you again!”

OP, you are one boss-monster of a poster. Epic.

I agree with a lot of the stuff you wrote, and on the stuff I don’t, it still gets the mind ticking.

I do think your parting suggestion is valid, and here’s why:

Daily Skill Interrupter – Ever try to do this on any old class just out in the open world?

You soon notice that enemies don’t just have poor conveyance, they have anti-conveyance. They don’t attack intruders ruthlessly, they throw out a swing randomly every once and a while. In the only way they are challenging is trying to predict when they are going to use their next skill so you can interrupt it.

I can see that in the starter zones, but Gendarran? I think by then the enemies should behave differently.

no loot from Bosses/Champs in Megaserver

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

There are 2 conditions you must meet in order to receive kill credit on any given enemy:

1. You have to accumulate a certain amount of damage against it.
(Working as intended)
2. In large zergs, you have to be one of the first to accumulate that amount of damage against it.
(Hopefully not working as intended, and not many people know about this)

Once a champ or vet spawns around a large number of players, it becomes a race to land the first hits. Full groups have a severe advantage and place in the race 5x as fast and take up 5 credit slots.

The issue is, you can give it everything you’ve got and do 10x more damage than the average auto-attacker and still not get credit. Even if you were around for 90% of the fight.

Many things fit into those categories:

  • Relationship with your guildmates
  • Refining your build
  • Obtaining your favorite armor set
  • Gaining titles, achievements and items that mark milestones in your play time

So when you think about it:

Rewards → Milestone items or your favorite armor
or
Rewards → Gold → Milestone items or your favorite armor
or
Rewards → Better stat items to refine your build
or
Rewards → Gold → Better stat items to refine your build

Rewards are not separate from goals

What if zerk was really nerfed in PvE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

You can slow zerkers down but that won’t change:

  • 1-shot mechanics invalidating tanks and heals.
  • The way conditions override other party members’ conditions.
  • The Defiant mechanic, AKA CC is really only really usable once per boss/champ.

So long as those issues remain, the last two parts of the damage, support, control triangle aren’t going to look too attractive.

My original questions assume that nerfing zerker would specifically involve changing things like you mention here. For example, tripling mob attack speeds while proportionately reducing damage would eliminate the 1-shot mechanic you mention. I also mentioned defiant. If ANet did make changes to those things, would the resulting gameplay be worse or better? I can see folks seeing it either way. I’m just mainly interested in why.

Right, I see that now, my bad.

I do believe it would make gameplay better.

Immersion vs "It's just a game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DarkWasp.7291

DarkWasp.7291

It’s a bit of a double edged sword.

On one end, the more you sacrifice immersion, the more it feels like you’re playing a calculator. On the other, you could make a game like URU Online where so much as the smallest interaction with the community could spoil a puzzle and shorten your game-time.

Couple that with the fact that differences exist between story immersion and environment immersion.

The way I feel for example:

If somebody tells me what happens in the story/living story before I play it, I’m OK with that. Sometimes it even lets me know what I have to look forward to (or not.) Did it break my story immersion? Guess so. Do I care? No.

Meanwhile stuff like the lack of first person zoom or the fact that pretty much every random dialogue in the game ends with a punch line, zinger, irony or proclamation irks me every day. That’s environment immersion, it affects how the game generally feels.

Some people may put more weight on story. Others may go so far as to suggest PvE gets removed entirely.

Difficulty is a tough subject in the open world.

If you want to make things “challenging” you could go the Tequatl route, but that’s no so much about skill as it is discrimination between the elite and the casual.

Win an event and it’s too easy. Fail an event and extreme rage and hatred boils between players, servers, groups .etc

Personally I’d rather play a game that’s maybe a little “too easy” with people around, than to go at everything solo.

Now if they made some solo dungeons, I’d be all for that.

However, when I get lazy and I’m not in a serious fight I sometimes click the utils (old habit.) Trouble is, my mind isn’t perfect and sometimes I do half the deed by holding ctrl, but miss the other half by clicking.

Same issue with pressing ESC, it’s the most reliable skill interrupter, but I’ll often try jumping, rolling or strafing out of my move for like 5 secs before I even think to reach all the way over there.

Sure, I’ll concede that there are more than a few events grinded by the hardcore that are way too open for trolling, but IMHO they’ve already taken the first step to alleviating some of those by making champs scale better.

In my experience, I’ve never felt less alone since release. It’s great! I’m leveling a mesmer at the moment, currently level 35. If I need help with an event, I finally feel like I can get it.

I know the temple events, the ‘raids,’ champ farms and the guild missions are way more rewarding than standard open world activities, but those open world activities are what many of us hyped when we heard about the game. It’s been so long, but we can finally do that stuff again.

It’s not the megaserver that needs to be fixed/removed. It’s just a few modifications to some of the more hardcore content to compensate, and it’s a willingness of the community to use the “Report” feature.

It’s a suggestion that comes up practically every day, it’s not selfish of you to ask.

Just to catch you up, we’ve already determined that:

1. The feature has already been developed as a dev tool, but there’s been no word that it would ever make it into the game.

2. As far as usability: Character fade on zoom already exists in the form of standing too close to a wall and zoom control while in combat (to prevent people from fighting in first person) already exists in the form of large-boss far zoom.

I don’t see there’s going to be a way to talk us out of this one.

Over the years I’ve become OK with energy potions, character bound dye and ascended gear. While two of those have been changed, it still payed to have an open mind.

This is different. The tonics aren’t so much a moot feature as they are a small apology gift for removing cosmetics right from our character’s hands.

They should at least be changed to armor skins at this rate.
