What I find funny is that a dev posted in the PvP forums a thread asking about the state of PW. Of course people are going to complain about it to get it nerfed there. One question he asks is how many hours have they played thief. Well I can easily lie, I mean, it’s the internet. Yet no one points fingers at the engineer that’s condi bursting you faster than you can clear them by spamming aoes everywhere on low cooldowns. Honestly, the “auto-attack” grenade, if traited, has the ability to inflict bleeding and burning, one of the most powerful condi’s in the game, and they can spam it. Amongst other conditions. CONFUS- whoa that was a really bad cough.

If anyone cares, Runes of Lyssa does have a cd. I don’t know how long it is, but I know if I summon Flesh Golem and use its’ charge a short time later it won’t proc again.

Its on an internal 45 second cooldown, which let’s thieves use it as soon as basivenom is up since that too is adorably on a nice 45 second cooldown. But in PvP, that rune set is one of our most reliable condi clears so im glad it works nice with basi venom’s CD

That trait set up is very glassy, if you want a standard build, an you want to backstab, an last a fight go 0/30/30/10/0 or replace that first 0 with a 10

Can Druid Spirit for the love of the Pale Tree actually grant regeneration and draw conditions for once? It does it, but in really long intervals. That’s a problem since it usually dies before it even get’s these off. Yeah it’s multi-immobilize is cool and all, but I want an elite that does everything, not 1/3rd of what it’s supposed to do. If you guys could just decrease the time intervals of the regen granting and condi drawing, not to “OP intervals” but to intervals where I acknowledge the spirit is actually doing something instead of just spamming immobilizes. I mean if I wanted to do just AOE damage, i’d use my shortbow, that doesn’t go on a 240 second cooldown.

I think it had a speed boost in the beta.

Okay to summarize what’s going on above me. At least in the finished game, IS never gave a speed boost, only initiative regen and a shadowstep as well as a breakstun, Signet of Shadows however gives the 25% passive speed as well as a blind………… and an on demand fireblast for a range of 1500 whilst giving the activator 6 seconds of stealth and breaking stuns and replenishing health for 3,000 and proccing 25 stacks of might for 20 seconds.

I never thought the swords autoattack surpassed PW in the first place. I always knew it was a powerful skill.

The instance of the last LS update once you, kill scarlet you’ll see a cutscene that basically answers your question.

That and try out Sword Pistol too, it helps avoid damage with its signature attack that doubles as an evade, as well as Black powder

Sounds like you may be better suited to playing a ranger.

Pros- If you get scared you can hide behind a bear and range with a bow (Long or Short)
Cons- Virtually none

To be honest though, the argument is somewhat rather pointless as shortbow is the weapon you need to learn since you will, or rather should, be sitting in it more than d/p. It doesn’t help that most thieves are terrible with shortbow.

So on this note. I’m on a constant quest on L2P. Can you explain how you would use this set? Every time I switch to this set I’m either trying to run away, or I don’t succeed in doing anything before some warrior just Bolo’s me or downs me w/ his stupid fire bow.

Mainly to keep pressure up via cluster bomb, cripples and a long poison to kite people in with weakness. Also gives access to on demand blasting. But against a warrior, they will usually out regen your damage with this weapon so if I ever used Sb on a warrior, its to get them with bug bites if melee at the time is too risky and use choking gas. Someone will probably prove me wrong, but SB alone won’t kill a typical WvW warrior

Saying DP is cheese is only saying DP is cheese, you are assuming that equates to DD being pro, where then is my opinion on SD SP etc?. I for one have no opinion on the OP’s video, but I feel like the OP isn’t the only one being judged here

Anet put D/P in the game for a reason, and that reason was so people could play it, NOT so you and others could go around ridiculing and flaming anyone who uses it. end of story, now go argue about how much you dislike d/p on another thread please.

I love my necromancer to death. Yeah I main and love my thief more, but I love the hell out of my necromancer. Haven’t done anything competitive on my Guard yet and Im gearing my engineer. But sheesh engineers seem to be the king of fights. Insane 1v1 capabilites in the form of aoe and painful conditions. When you get their health low, the can just overcharge+explode turret+magnetic shield+rocket boots to burst their health really high from a low point. An engineer my skill level or better is a near impossible match against my thief, my necromancer on the other hand….let’s just say giving a necromancer painful conditions is never a good idea.

I really don’t know why are too many thieves that thinks playing D/D makes them pro.

Let people to play whatever they want, if they choose to use the most effective build or strategy . . . whats wrong with that!?

If they BP+HS Stealth, people complain.
If they use Mug+CnD+BS Combo, people complain.
If they Evade with S/D, they complain.
If they Evade with bow, they Complain.
If they stunt you with S/P, they complain.
If they CnD on mobs, they Complain.

I play all sets of weapons, even conditions, and i find my self a lot more cheesy and coward to perma stealth on mobs with CnD that wasting my ini with BP+HS combo.

Every good build in this game will be called cheesy, and this will never stop, you should use your time improving the game play instead.

They don’t think D/D is pro, they think D/P is cheese, there’s a difference.

I understand that this is a PvE WvW build but im going to toy around a bit with a buddy of mine in the Heart of the Mists since that’s the next best thing to spending actual gold (Gearing my newest 80 soon be sure to check out my siggy soon still a thief at heart though ). A couple things that I’ve been wondering about though. Shadow Refuge is indeed a source of Lifesteal, but it’s usually used as a final trump card. Now, with a normal stealth build, you could get all benefits from Shadow Refuge; you gain the stealth and regen then attack with a powerful stealth attack when you feel comfortable. With though it seems that you have to choose one or the other, stealth or lifesteal (I mean I’m sure you can place it in front of you and shoot through it but that may not always be an option). So my friend, what do you use Shadow refuge for mainly?

Also, obviously you chose Descent into shadows for WvW so it goes without question that you’d go for Power of Inertia as an alternative, but what I find interesting in the Trickery tree is that you chose long reach. Why? I’m not saying you made a poor choice but on paper P/D is ranged but not long range, and you’ll want to be within a decent range anyway to get CnD’s off. So I would think a normal steal range would suffice, not to mention if one went with Thrill of the Crime you’d get bonus condi damage and Fury increasing your crit chance even higher.

Superior sigil of Air I can see for the damage, but why not Superior Sigil of Blood to go with your theme of a vampiric thief? You’ve chosen to invest resources to Precision so that would benefit from it I would think, and add more Health Siphons to your siphon build.

Overall, these weren’t criticisms just questions I wanted cleared up to understand the mentality behind some of your choices. The build looks really innovative, wish necromancers had something like it since they are supposed to be vampire like. Looks really fun, oh and one last thing, Shortbow will get two sigils soon, what is the second you’d plan on using?

12-16k Damage in one hit begs to differ.
Initiative was a failed experiment. However – this is Anet and we all know that they REFUSE to accept taking blame when they have done something SO stupid or SO broken and would rather just force EVERYONE to live with it.

Dhuumfire is an example before its release Necromancers were ALL saying that they didnt need or want it and what do you know…It was too powerful so rather than say “kitten we made a mistake, sorry” they just went ahead and kept nerfing it and everything else they could get there hands on….

Once again, let’s take a number that’s only high because of critical values, might stacks and position and assume that that is that skill’s actual power rating

So backstab from the front, which happens often mind you, only hits for around 400 which is pretty basic. From behind however it still only hits for around 800. It gets its numbers from might stacks and crits. By itself, the skill is not a god skill. Eviscerate on the other hand Hits much harder at its strongest point, doesn’t need to hit from behind AND has more range. And I’ve seen some nasty numbers from that skill. I seriously think people just find anything they can to bash this class.

And initiative + mobility + stealth is the issue.

Expecially since initiative is unaffected by chill that should be changed asap

Well once again, you’re giving thieves too much credit. Why not complain about a warrior dashing away using rush and whirlwind and you can’t do a thing about it? Stun breakers are no excuse to bash a class, Shadowstep was meant for that purpose, to escape danger to either escape or retaliate. Using 4CC’s in a row is never a good idea

^^^Forgot that crucial bit of info, well done. other classes bypass CD by simply switching weapons. A thief’s initiative however does not replenish when weapons are swapped.

Not to be mean, but why not just skip the middle man and make your own build?

it doesnt really have anything to do with the philosophy behind thieves as much as the actually mechanic of the class initiative. id really like to know from the devs why they made this decision because it blatently separates thieves from every other class. i think thief skills need to be nerfed for this reason because of how initiative is a periodically regenerating currency(with traits and signets its super powerful) and the skills that use initiative are a little two powerful. Well an “experienced” thief wouldn’t waste that much ini to spam one skill that you can avoid a fair amount. Our crucial skills costs too much ini to waste needless skills. And thief skills aren’t as hard hitting as you think. A warriros eviscerate hits even harder than out backstab. Backstab by itslef is actually a fairly normal skill. it only gets its notorious dmg from crits and hitting from behind. And the philosophy has plenty to do with the mechanic. If they didn’t think thieves should be that way, initiative wouldnt have been there. Same way the necromancer was thought to be the master of conditions, so they have deathshroud, a lot of condi transfers, and very high health. Nerfing thief skills would cripple the class.

Blinds, teleports, and evades hurt you right? I never said the elementalist was perfect. But they were supposed to be actively defensive, to compensate for the low armor low hp. A thief only has stealth and evades, no other mitigation to reduce dmg taken. And a good ele should give a thief a run for their money, if they dont make them run.

The thief was designed to be an in and out class. I was advertised to be the best dueler and it follows the philosophy of hitting quickly and hitting hard. It has initiative to do this. To compensate, a thief’s skills are not as powerful(by themselves)as other class skills. Also, their defenses aren’t that high. Getting rid of the greatsword? I have a ranger friend who has worked for a third of a YEAR for twilight, waited even longer after the three components for a Dusk to finish it. And im sure there are other rangers, albeit rare that worked for a GS legendary. This gets implemented and there will be complete and utter CHAOS

Honestly, engineers area thief’s main counter, or at least one of them. The playstyle is different but both classes are good in 1v1 or rather, the one that is supposed to be isn’t as good as it used to and the one that nobody seems to care about excels in 1v1 but has little escape abilities. Thief is high damage, engi has a lot of AOE’s. I want you to realize that, engineers will use a lot of aoe’s making them hard to fight melee range and even harder to hit while they are kiting you. So a typical DDthief, well any thief that focuses on melee really, this’ll be you vs. an engi VVVV

Interesting enough but then my main questions are: Would this be considered a power build or a condition damage build? Maybe even Hybrid? The answer to that goes to my next question of why you went with celestial instead of choosing armor that directly benefits you. Even more interesting is why you have Traveler Runes which tells me, or actually doesn’t tell me where the main damage comes from :p but it looks interesting, I hope we get to see it in action

I don’t see 4 seconds being game breaking over 3 seconds, and I main thief for pvp play.

It’s a strange transition, because mental timers get skewed but it’s nothing impossible to adjust to.

Do you run D/D in PvP? If not then the 4 seconds reveal is indeed not a problem as other sets have something to compensate for that extra second
