Sword/Pistol + P/P Thief is an absolutely horrible, disgusting and pathetic combination in reality. The video made it look like it’d be awesome.
Those builds do just fine. You just can’t perma stealth like a scrub.
It’s not a bad build if you play smartly.

The complaints against constructive posts like this are why we can’t get good things. Stop flaming someone who is trying to help the class.

It is not possible to LEARN to Stealth before Sic Em is applied because it’s instant cast with absolutely 0 tells, and 0 possible counter play. You can get lucky and Stealth before your enemy decides to randomly use it, but that misplay will only cost him a 5 second cooldown on Sic Em instead of the full cooldown. And if you’re NOT running Perma-Stealth, it’ll be ready to use before you can Stealth again.
Let me reiterate, Sic Em affects Perma-Stealth Thieves the least out of all Thief builds that make use of Stealth due to the lack of targetting opportunities. If you still can’t see a problem with this kind of design, I’ll take evilapprentice’s advice and stop wasting my time.
As a thief, it’s impossible for my victims to learn how to avoid my attacks from stealth either. This isn’t any different. Again, learn to thrive with less stealth. Other thieves do it, you can too!

Personally,I really enjoy getting 10 of my closest friends, grouping up and roaming for soloers. We crush the soloer then spam points and laughs at him. Makes me feel all warm inside.

You can run, dodge and stealth before the skill is used to avoid it. Try it. You are making a broad claim with blinders on. I see pets malfunction all the the time. If this hadn’t been handled this way, sic em would never work. Maybe you need to comprehend how other classes work.
Sure. Being hit with knockdown, confusion or dozens of other things have the same effect. Move on. The point is that you now need to use stealth more intelligently.
It doesn’t invalidate a trait line. It requires its intelligent use.
:( I was one of the many Thieves who fell victim to it tonight. It reeks of shoddy game design and it’s just so ridiculous that I can still hardly believe that Anet actually listened to the QQing and created an unavoidable stealth counter rather than just encouraging players to learn the already existing counters.
As a thief I think this is great. Perhaps it will purge the scrub perma stealth thieves who abuse game mechanics and give our class a horrible reputation. I enjoyed the fights last night. Bring it on!
The philosophy used here is consistent with every other balancing move, stealth lacked a certain counter. That is one that had less than 5% of actually breaking stealth. I almost never got hit while in stealth. That frequency increased last night. I welcome the challenge. Every other class has had to deal with highly certain counters to their key mechanics. So this precedent that bothers you so much has been here since release. Thieves aren’t special. You aren’t special. Move on.

Well permastealth is pretty much face roll too. That’s why thieves are hated. Blame that silly mechanic.
dp Perma stealth is what is putting our profession in a sorry state(compared to other prof def not op just annoying). Any time anet decide to change/nerf some it feel like they are trying to tone down perma stealth thiefs but not everyone plays that spec and it seem they end up hurting more other thief build rather than perma stealth dp thiefs.
That’s why some of us went the higher road and didn’t pick the ezmode spec. Perma stealth is the worst thing that’s happened to our class. It enrages the player base, make thieves hated and despised and drives the nerfs.
Poor rangers are the butt of every joke in wvw. “Oh, you’re a RANGER!” Snicker snicker. “That’s too bad. Shoo we don’t want your kind here.” Even up levels laugh at rangers.
A few thieves used this on me tonight. No big deal. They died. Then again, I don’t use the scrub permastealth build.

And what the kitten is with the non-documented nerf to Shadow’s Embrace? Remove 1 condition every TEN seconds instead of 3? Forget to put that in the patch notes on purpose?
So now we have even less condi-removal, then essentially the none (unless traited for shadow’s embrace) we had before. So we get condi-spammed by necro/ele/engi and can’t stealth to heal up because shadow refuge is such a hilarious telegraph that you just blast, swing, or necro-well the area and we die anyways because of our hilariously low HP pool. Stealth wears off long before ANY conditions will.. oh and on top of that, yeah, we can still get channeled while in stealth too, remember that?
All I see are thieves giving giving giving up elements that made the class work, and every other class getting getting getting more and more and more. Why don’t devs use the same thought process they use for thieves when “updating” other classes instead of handing them everything like candy.

So when feedback was requested about this upcoming change, there was quite an uproar over “Sic Em”. It seems the only thing on the table at that moment was the cooldown and effectiveness of “Sic Em”. They were dead set on this new feature.
I hope next time they listen to the player base before tinkering with hardcore/traditional GW2. Instead of spending time on this, focus on enhancements that don’t trample onto the features of other classes.

I think they DID listen to the player base. Look to the thousands of posts complaining about perma stealth. some of us thieves saw this coming and learned to play other specs.

I am a thief, and I think the class is fine. You need to learn to play something other than perma stealth now.
As a thief, I can admit that perma stealth with zero hard counters was op’d. those of you who rely on that crutch will have to l2p like the rest of us thieves who took the higher road.

Just watched the livestream. Ranger Sic Em will apply 4s Revealed instantly, and cannot be dodged.
It’s worse than I thought. No possibility for counter play except perma-stealthing so they can’t acquire a target to begin with.

Had some fantastic fights with TE in SBI bl today and then TE and BEAST in SoR BL. Hope to see you guys out in during the rest of the week for more fights. And that golem rush on SBI hills by Abys and other assorted SBI members was good, you guys almost caught us out there.

Those were some absolutely fantastic and fun fights! We weren’t too worried about the outcome, we just knew we wanted to get some great battles in and work on training some in-battle commanders! What better way than to fight SoR? We won some fights, we lost some fights. All was awesome. Shout outs to our opponents (I saw DIE, TW, and a few others… I’m sorry if I missed you. I was focusing on not dying! Haha) and shout out to our comrades TE, DR, and the others!
Oh, and I say this in the most friendly teasing way (cause lets be honest, we don’t have much in the way of map to brag about), I hope you enjoyed your paper Bay, SoR!

lol how is block a counter to stealth? even if you get blocked, evaded, or just flat out miss you won’t lose stealth and can instantly spam the attack again thanks to the wonderfully thought out stealth and inititative systems. The fact thieves exist at all is mind boggling, the only thing I can think of is that Anet was trying to boost sales by catering to the inept moron that needs training wheels to compete demographic.
No but you will know someone is trying to backstab which gives you the hint to press dodge or move so you may waste the thief’s stealth time and stealth attack. So yes it is a counter, it just requires a little work.

The truth is, every other class has a penalty for getting an attack on a target who’s blocking the attack. A full cooldown. Thieves get no penalty from backstabbing a blocked target from stealth. Also, seeing block doesn’t necessarily mean you know where the thief is, and if popping an evade sometimes isn’t the right thing to do. Remember, thief wants you to blow your evades so he can land attacks on you easily. It’s called baiting the dodge and it’s a common thief tactic. Have you fought many thieves on other classes yourself? Seems like you would know this if you have.
Edit: Then again, backstab is considered an auto attack, and if any other class attacks a target blocking with their own auto attack, they essentially receive no penalty either but they’re visible to the person. So this may be intended , but it just seems to give thief an insane advantage to setup a 2nd backstab since he can easily drop aegis or wait for the block to end without penalty.
TBH I’d rather have thieves revealed on a Blocked, Invulnerable or Evaded backstab, it’d make things a whole lot more fun and fair.
Agreed. TBH, stealth is just laughably easy in this game. we need a challenge.
