I kinda think the design process for anything mesmer suffers from how easily it snowballs into OP territory. Therefore I think numbers are just something to ignore for now and comment on how the mechanic itself would work if the number was appropriate.

For instance, how would Ambushes be if they were tuned up? I think they would be fine personally. Mirrors… not as big a fan there, I don’t think just numbers make them more attractive as such.

Been using Dagger/warhorn on mine, keeping a scepter around for the really unfriendly fights though, or a staff if I ever party up. I’ve got a full Magi set + Staff for fun, so when I want to feel really safe (along with the others) and somebody else is about to also join the tough fight that’s a pretty good way to ensure victory.

Anyway, for solo – been playing Fire/earth/tempest with signets, elemental power and one defensive flex slot, and in a mix of viper and sinister. It’s just fun to me to actually have signets feel usable for actives (written in stone trait), particularly having that extra heal from the heal signet.

Do we think they’ll leave Balthazar runes as is anyway? It’s giving a frightful amount of burning duration, compared to a lot of other ones. Which is cool mind you, just you know, it seems to have been dialled back a lot into Expertise rating elsewhere.

Anyway, I’d definitely wait too. I also agree with Mikau, that’d probably be my dream stat.

Like Shortbow a lot, but not too thrilled about the utility skills aside from the excellent elite. However, it may be clouded that I have so very little investment with this legend for some reason. Just not a fan of charr mechanized culture or charr warbands. I realize that’s not really a super-valid criticism tho

I’m pleased with the theme, and pleased it’s being tested in a live environment now. I only wish the specs were active during the PvE test as well, because any data would likely benefit them a lot with how big changes they make to the classes.

Amethyst Lure.5624

It’s weird because in terms of feel, Power Reaper is probably my favourite out of all of HoT elite specs. It just seems to fall short on damage as well as trait design and such. Worth noting is that I play more PvE and I can totally understand that gravedigger is too slow in pvp. But I feel like that’s also something you could have as a trait to fix, such as Gravedigger giving superspeed when it executes.

Anyway, I’m sure others have made much better suggestions over the times, and I hope further changes come around to the traits and such.

I was really hoping for a Norn legend, because well… it’s their thing. The recently immortalized Norn ranger + Longbow, the dream – I think it would actually be a neat twist. But I suppose there are so many choices that it’s hard to single one out.

Anyway, I definitely think it will be a ranged weapon regardless if any leaks are true. The Hammer is cool but it only has a power aspect, there is too much of a gap in the Rev ranged department.

If you could have one alt

in Thief

Posted by: Amethyst Lure.5624

Amethyst Lure.5624

I’m coming from the other side, Thief is my favoured alt – although by a hair, as I enjoy my old Mesmer origins still & play Ranger and Necro when I am able as well. Revenant is my main, I like it mainly for the damage (or healer) + support aspect although I do realize other classes can do it better. Anyway, I love Thief for the fast and smooth gameplay – I may be in the minority when I say primarily for the Staff, I just love bounding about with one. As you can tell… preferences maybe not 100% from efficiency alone, but the fun factor.

The only other I can think of is if Dragonhunter was a class. Everything about it; the longbow skills actually feel cool unlike ranger, the traps feel extremely satisfying, and its F skills have flavour & are good. Too bad it’s connected to my least favourite class – Guardian.

So anyway… more than one. It’s just too hard!

I don't want to support. What else is there?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Amethyst Lure.5624

Amethyst Lure.5624

It’s a shame that there is a lack of choice, it doesn’t really matter which class we’re talking about – it’s not an ideal situation. I don’t think you can blame OP for being sad; if the class flavour didn’t matter (and ‘just reroll’ was a valid argument) then all we’d need would be a “DPS”, “Healer”, “Tank” or “Utility” class with no name and generic spells.

So it would be awesome if some choices could be added to the current path. However, even in this it would be cool if you could tailor to what degree as a tradeoff. Mesmers are good at manipulation and so typically lends itself well to being a team’s utility even on a conceptual level, but if i want to go lighter on utility at the cost of more personal power I think that should be a healthy choice one can make within the class. You could argue that Mesmers ARE designed to only be a support class, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that design intent suggested to quite the extent we’re seeing now.

Don’t you people arguing see that you are correct with most things said depending on the point of view? If you are concerned about ease of pugs, optimizing things, and adhering to the tried and true then Daedraz’ viewpoint is worth following.

If you are concerned with doing it your own way, not being bothered whether pugs keep you, or simply playing with friends to avoid that conundrum – and apply your best within your own ideology – then nerfing time’s viewpoint works out.

In the end it’s just going to depend on what the player is looking for. Personally I mostly do random things on my Rev, and don’t have time to play much besides. I still like to use research by me and others to polish my gameplay experience, because it’s fun. If I was doing high end raiding, I would certainly strive to inconvenience the group as little as possible (since you have to be a team) with my choices and thus more than likely follow that meta beast, or at least be heavily influenced by the parts that are tested and true in the actual game. More likely I’d be in a team that only cares about fun & casual progression if I were raiding. There’s a whole lot of players with different opinions there, so the trick is just to find the likeminded and understand that others may not be like you.

Requesting help with PvE build.

Amethyst Lure.5624

Some general thoughts…

I would like to add one specific thing about the melee weapon choice. You can actually use Greatsword for travelling as well as leaping farther than you can jump (although this doesn’t have supermany applications now with gliding) so if you prefer the more balanced Greatsword in terms of offense/defense I quite like it. In fact I find sword to be more of a group weapon, as you easily risk more damage taken with it, but that’s also down to knowledge – it’s harder to learn just because how it interferes a bit with dodging logic.

It also really depends on how fast you want to kill things. You can definitely build a Power gearset that is fairly durable in terms of healing through Zealot (or cleric + some crit) where you have more mitigation and such, although it will make fights much longer. If you wish to do this I would go the condition route and pickup Apothecary gear, simply since it is easier to gear for that type of damage along with defense. As others have said though often a strong offense can be good, especially with Power (that cannot kite around while condis tick for damage) so bringing durable pets to alternate calling and wearing all that berserker stuff is also a thing, just more dependant on dodging well and such.

But I would definitely try to build upon the aspect you find fun with Ranger first. It’s not very fun to be effective if it brings you no joy. One nice perk with ranger is that power, condi, healing, and so on… there are weapons supporting all of that, so for open world ranger has quite diverse choice. If you’ve trouble distinguishing those, a weapon with things like burning, bleedor poison, is typically condition, whilst a weapon with straight damage values and maybe some general buffs is a Power weapon. Some are a little hybrid, such as Sword which can technically be used in either, but for Ranger it’s otherwise fairly straightforwards; ex. Short bow for Condi – Long bow for Power, commonly. Staff is mostly used for zipping around or group heals.

Hope any of this helps, I don’t have a good build on hand to present

Well, there’s glimmers, like further tablet QoL stuff. It has the potential to feel cool to anybody that enjoys controlling the area around you, but it needs to feel very responsive for such a feature to have any place and it never really did. Hopefully this helps.

It’s somewhat bewildering that the class that arrived along with the introduction of tanking/healing, has never really functioned well at either though, while established classes has flourished in some cases. It suggests there is something fundamental holding back Rev here, and personally I think it has to do with the legend split.

A lot of the design is favouring you swapping between two to utilize all the energy resources available to you, traits and such that synergizes, but for tanking and healing there is much less incentive to swap because critical abilities are locked away until you can swap again. You are essentially functioning better as half a class, but it is still only half a class, even if that is a bit of an oversimplification. Like, if I’m healing in Ventari, chances are I simply cannot risk swapping out very often depending on the encounter. Not sure what to do about this and the bad feeling it brings.

I’m happy to support games I like (even though I’ve not played too much for a bit now, but maybe the account still shows purchases?) and I really don’t mind it for a game such as this which is based on it and still delivers fair content – most of the time.

However, I will never pay money for something that is a gamble. I do not gamble for goods – perhaps i would have a different outlook if I did not have bills and other things to spend my money on, and I don’t want to fall into the trap of paying to overcome RNG. I hope this sheds some light on why I won’t personally get these skins, unless I can manage to find enough keys through playing the game. To reiterate, not because i don’t want to support A-net. I just don’t support gambling DLC/digital goods.

I suppose that falls beyond the scope of this particular discussion slightly, as it affects all key purchases. But it’s especially annoying to see when real money gambling is made the forefront way to achieve something.

Legendary weapons

Amethyst Lure.5624

I’m disappointed myself, I think. But not with the legendary thing as much as just feeling generally disappointed in my HoT purchase. I actually really liked GW2 prior to it, and yet now I find little to appeal at this point; it’s many small things such as the design for large groups, somewhat leaning too much on verticality in the new maps, and the draught of story – among many other small things. It’s worth mentioning i joined the game during living stories, so for me that’s actually what really brought me in. A perfect game to do solo- and event-style things in.

I have always found the raid concept to be really overrated – 5 or so people are more than enough for me to get a cool dynamic, though I understand still that some enjoy large-scale things. As such I don’t have a huge gripe with the raids, and even if there is balancing to be done I also enjoy the elite specializations.

I think like many others in the thread it’s just disappointing to see the seeming lack of hours, manpower or whatever that has ended us here, considering the very substantial pricetag of the expansion – it is the priciest one I have bought for an mmo, so it was a bit of a gamble. As it stands now i don’t feel like it was warranted for me.

Anyway, here’s hoping I’ve got a cause to enjoy the game more like I used to, in the time to come.

I would like to add to this that all the “easy to master” discussion only applies to 2/5 of the class. Mallyx is not super-easy (though not hard either) and Jalis/ventari just needs help to even function well on a basic level.

It’s still a new class so I guess it is to be expected there are things to work out, however it’s easy to start speculating if the legend design really worked out properly. Since it’s fun to play some of them for sure I like to think it’s possible iterations down the line.

Amethyst Lure.5624

Just a quick note with the comparing heals to other classes. The revenant heals are mostly worse than others because you always have at least 2 of them. I’m guessing they are trying to fix the outliers but Facet of Light is basically going to be OP or useless based on the situation, so I dunno if that is really balanceable if they want that. It will be great against people who cannot read it and bad against those who can, and it will always be an amazing PvE heal, if there is no mechanics change.

In my mind the Necro changes in HoT is just the best of the lot. It improved on almost everything about the class, AND made it more fun – for me, at least. I think it would be cool if the staff projectile 1. move faster and 2. was made up by this big bunch of dark energy that is split across all targets you hit. So let’s say it crits for 5k just to use a number. It would hit for 1k on 5 targets, or 5k on 1 target. It still has the same life force logic as today, so that would give it nice functionality for longrange situations. You could also make something like that a trait to alter its functionality like that.

Anyway, I feel like something like that is a good way.

Yes I think the main trap with Necro is that you just look at 1-2 skills and go “That it?”, when it’s very much a case of many little streams of siphoning funneled to you if you build for it. Adds up really quick. You can have that disussion about it working in shroud for the heals but I’m honestly fine with the current functionality. I mean, most traits don’t give their effect (or has it be useful) all the time, even passive ones.

Sadly it’ll be a matter of time until pug-culture gets obsessed with using ‘optimal’ builds exlusively.

Dreading the idea of an addition of a dps meter for this reason. Useful sure, but 1% difference would become “go this build or go home” mentality that happens in every MMO with raids ever, instead of actually trying out what works well with your own raid group.

But yes they do take longer strides when they run (and thus feel slower), swiftness makes a fair difference.

Necromancer Sustain

in Necromancer

Posted by: Amethyst Lure.5624

Amethyst Lure.5624

Others have touched on it but, I feel like you can’t make cross-class comparisons that simply. While Revenant can get a ton of sustain they have to build fairly wierdly to do it. In Necro’s case, it’s a lot of sources combined AND skills that often hit very many times (wells, axe #2, daggers in general etc).

You also have to factor in Shroud. As long as it serves as a second hp bar also, it’s always going to mean that if you can spend a significant amount of time losing ‘hp’ there the regen for your actual hp bar becomes more and more valuable over time, not in numbers healed but just generally reducing the chance to take a big hit and get downed.
