Honestly, no.

Because even if the renegade was good in terms of numbers it doesn’t feel good to play as and Kalla was, quite frankly, an extremely lame choice for a legend. I loved the concept of the revenant when it was first announced but it now feels like a class that nobody knows what exactly to make of and that’s a shame.

So I’ll be shelving mine until the class fantasy manifests in some meaningful way. I’ve enjoyed Path of Fire immensely otherwise and if it has one stain it is this.

For me and my friends WvWvW is indeed dead.

They need to work on more player driven features like housing and whatnot to keep players engaged. The static content is not particularly good and opinions vary wildly when it comes to the quality of the storytelling. Besides, if you’re not into the characters you’re not going to be getting much out of the story. Personally I really don’t give a kitten about any of them and in terms of story I’m just holding out hope for somebody like Palawa Joko making an appearance.

But yeah, I don’t really play anymore because I feel like I have nothing to actually work towards. There’s also way too much of a focus on the shop in general and it feels like they design every single element of the game around it. While I realize ArenaNet needs to make a profit here we do have an issue when that seems more important than designing fun content. Entertain us and success will come to you.

GW2 currently has all that in place. There are specific rewards for doing specific LS events (i.e. non-RNG like Watchwork Shoulder or RNG like Scarlet’s Kiss rifle). There are dungeon weapons and armor for specific dungeon tokens, or from SPvP reward tracks. There are rare unique weapon and armor boxes for Teq and the Great Wurm. Then you have ultra rare items like Precursors that can drop from nearly everything at max level.

Some of these items are Account Bound on acquire, so you can’t trade them. Some are not bound, so you can choose to use them, or sell them on the market. So just because there’s a reward that you don’t care for (i.e. CoF weapons and armors), doesn’t mean that the reward methods you’re asking for isn’t already in the game.

The keyword here was sensible. The droprates on Scarlet’s Kiss were anything but sensible. The same applies to Tequatl and Wurm boxes which I foolishly grinded for months only to end up with totally different weapon chests. Guess I can’t complain too much since some people have done that kitten since the encounters were first implemented and still have nothing to show for it. That, my friend, is truly kittened.

Achievement bound skins are neat and all but I wouldn’t place them on the same level as legendaries. The issue remains in that the shiniest of shinies are handed out by an RNG lottery. What’s the prestige in that?

The big difference between those games and GW2 in terms of gear (other than the obvious treadmill that comes with a subscription game) is that in those games you need to grind Activity A over and over and hope for Item A to drop whereas in GW2 you can grind Activity A-Z and use the gold generated to buy Item A-Z.

Some people feel like grinding one activity for each item is better (heaven knows why). Other people realize that GW2 gives you MORE options for getting your gear and appreciate that they can do the stuff they like doing to get the stuff they like having.

People like grinding specific content for specific rewards because it gives them a realistic goal to work towards. Grinding gold in Guild Wars 2 hoping to one day buy a legendary is not a realistic goal for most players. This seems fairly obvious to me. There’s also the whole having to earn your shinies argument.

Sure, a precursor can drop from anywhere but with a drop rate of 0.00000000001% or whatever it is what’s the point? Nobody goes to farm Orr thinking they’ll ever get that drop. I’d rather take specific encounters for specific rewards with sensible drop rates. Then we can have some ultra rare world drops on the side. I’m just opposed to it being the main method of acquisition.

I’ve never played those two games before. Was in-game currency that useless? If so, what’s the point in playing if there’s no money system?

Not useless, no. It’s just that having the right friends and actually being good at the game were more important factors overall. You still had world drops which sold for a pretty penny to collectors. Not to mention consumables, social items and all that jazz. I actually built myself a small empire in World of Warcraft dealing in a certain fish.

The issue with Guild Wars 2 is really that it’s way too one-sided. Beyond achievements there really is no point in doing most of the content.

That you feel yours has a “story” and his doesn’t doesn’t matter to me because your story is only interesting to you.

It doesn’t matter to you. That said, I’ve had the pleasure of trading stories with plenty of fine folks over the years so I’m going to go ahead and disagree with your inane assertion of it not mattering to anyone. People do care and people like having a story to tell and “I bought it off the trading post” really doesn’t have much meat to it.

My first experience with a quest for legendary weapons in an MMO was the class legendaries from Everquest, involving an inane list of fetch quests that generally culminated in not one but a series of raid-required dragon kills for loot that wasn’t guaranteed to drop in raids that weren’t instanced, meaning you had to get into a guild that hit them when they respawned on their one-week timer to even have a chance at a chance of getting the thing you wanted, and it certainly didn’t feel like an effort you yourself were putting in to accomplish much.

Frankly, I don’t see GW2’s model as being much worse in terms of difficulty or obnoxiousness for acquiring legendaries. It’s just a more naked, overt grind with gold involved rather than a social media grind of getting in good with the right people on your server to be allowed to join the right raids when you needed them.

tl;dr – MMOs are not where you should look for your legendary story quests. They are almost universally bad at delivering that experience.

And while you had a bad experience thousands of other players bonded together over this. You might have hated the quests but they succeeded in getting players out in the world and they did great things for socialization. Countless of bonds and stories were crafted out of those inane fetch quests. We’ve lost that sense of community here. People spend their days sitting on the trading post undercutting one another instead of going out on these grand adventures together.

Yeah, great community there.

You think it’s more interesting because someone gave it to him instead of his having to buy it? Either way he didn’t find it in a loot bag himself. Someone handed it to him.

Unless you’re going with one of the varieties of King Arthur story in which the sword in the stone and Excalibur are considered to be the same sword (which is not always true), in which case you’re saying it’s more interesting that he was the only person who could pull a sword out of a rock instead of being the only merchant shrewd enough to buy the most unique sword on the market amidst heavy competition.

You’re arguing a point of view. For you it might be true, but that doesn’t make it objectively so. I care equally little about how much you farmed a dungeon to get your sword as I do about how much flipping Penguin did to buy his. They’re equally disinteresting to me; the end result and what you do with it matters far more, from my perspective.

A point of view which currently isn’t represented in the game. There is no option to quest for legendaries. There is only the gold grind and dumb kittening luck. Embrace it or perish. Sure, I ain’t arguing that some people enjoy their spreadsheeting and flipping but that wasn’t the premise Guild Wars 2 sold itself on. Had I known I was buying a Wall Street simulator with the option to play as a wage slave I would have left it sitting on the shelf and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

That you’d actually argue that playing the trading post and playing the game are both equally disinteresting propositions says a whole lot about the current state of things. Not that I’m disagreeing, mind you.

So having tons of virtual gold doesn’t make you an interesting and special person, but winning a virtual sword from playing a game does?

I don’t particularly like the way the wealth seems to be currently balanced and prioritized in GW2’s market, but your argument here is nonsensical. At the end of the day beating down the fictional doors of a non-existent vampire castle to stake its master – as is being done by thousands of other players in the same game at the same time – has no “real” meaning either.

It gives the object a story to it. Would Excalibur truly be worthy of legend had Arthur bought it from the local blacksmith? While you’re right in that everybody doing the same thing does make things feel a whole lot less special I think the illusion is to be preferred over nothing at all which is what we have right now what with everything being just another commodity to be peddled about.

I could say the same when my group did all the work to take down the Great Wurm, and the pug who got in a few tags shares the title. Or how I finally got my Liadri mini and title for beating her legitimately, yet exploiters who spammed lifesteal got the same.

At the end of the day, yes it’s an item that you bought. But it’s also an item that a lot of other people doesn’t have. Not that it would make me an interesting person. But it would make me a special one, since people would be jealous of my stuff when I show it off.

I view all of that zerg content as atrociously designed to tell you the truth. And yeah, sucks about Liadri but that’s all on ANet. I never did care for the encounter much myself but I did all the achievements the honest way and I suppose I do feel more proud over that than anything else I’ve done in this game. Which is sad.

That said, when I talk about special I mean something like the journey to a legendary back in EverQuest or obtaining Carsomyr in Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Heck, even World of WarCraft had some really rare items back in the day which required you to go through lengthy quests. Now that warranted admiration.

Paying a high price for a limited edition Murakami Louis Vuitton bag that no one else in your city has, doesn’t cheapen it. Just as paying 2500 Gold for an item from the TP that’s ultra rare. It’s a status symbol that shows you own something that very few have. Whether you found it or paid for it, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you own it.

But that is no longer about being special. That’s just about flaunting affluence. Unless you sincerely believe that having a lot of money somehow makes you a more interesting and special person?

And at the end of the day it’s just a bag. There is no story to it and it has no real meaning beyond the price tag somebody slapped on it. It’s not like you beat down the doors of a vampire castle and staked its master for it or anything. It’s just a bag. A bag you bought.

Yawn.

You can have your adventure, but let me have my snowflake. Part of the issue is that you want both your adventure and my snowflake. When there’s too many snowflakes around, it just becomes common snow that no one cares about.

And therein lies the issue. The adventure has been separated from the treasure chest at the end. Just imagine playing Legend of Zelda and finding nothing but rupees in every single big chest. Just rupees and rupees all the time. Rescue the princess? Woohoo, here’s some rupees! That’s Guild Wars 2. Just about everything of consequence is tied to gold and just about everything we do we do for the sake of acquiring gold. Not even PvP has been spared.

Quest and reward is a sacred bond. It shouldn’t be quest so you can make gold and then buy your reward from a middle man on the trading post. That’s exactly what makes things feel less special. There isn’t much of a story to tell when you farmed gold like every other sucker to buy your sword of annihilation +10. It cheapens it.

What if we want to be special snowflakes that get to show off an ultra rare item?

I’m not sure why you’d take pride in an item gained through RNG or gold farming to tell you the truth. A legendary in this game means absolutely nothing as it’s just a heap of gold. I’ve been here since the start and as such do have a lot of the rarer skins but I feel no attachment to any of them due to the way I acquired them and that’s the issue with this game as a whole for me at least.

Progressing towards these rarities should be a great adventure in itself. It should be about more than just sitting in the hub and flipping on the trading post or opening lockboxes hoping to eventually luck out. Is it too much to hope for a bit of adventure here?

Engaging in scamming people and abusing trust is something you willingly commit to, not a fact of life.

Good on ANet for the change but again it just shows how messed up things are. We just had an item go from being valued at over two thousand gold to a mere hundred. While I understand the allure of loot manipulation and market control all too well I’d suggest learning from Blizzard’s treatment of Diablo because your players will call you on this kitten every time. Have the drop rate be sensible from the start and then keep your mittens off it.

The reason why ANet won’t do anything about flippers hijacking markets is because it benefits them greatly to see these higher prices. Remember that gold as a currency is tied to gems which can be purchased for real money. They hope to drive new players into purchasing gold in order to catch up which is exactly why they keep on nerfing popular farm spots.

Unfortunately this short-sighted greed is having an extremely negative effect on the game as a whole. Short of getting extraordinarily lucky a new player will have no way to ever compete on the market. They’re strangling their own game trying to squeeze a few more dollars out of it.

As long as ArenaNet continues to sell gold you will never see any major loot improvements. Currently everything revolves around gold since the cash shop allows you to buy gems and then exchange those for gold. It behooves them to keep worthwhile skins highly limited in order to create a greater demand for gold.

The game is in the exact same situation as Diablo III was in thanks to the RMAH.
