OP I’m also tired. All the thief nerf posts I see every single day have demoralized me to the point that I took a 2-3 month break just waiting to see what the next balance update will be about(probably nerfs as always). Eh Dark Souls 2 next week, so I got that going for me.
I was under the impression that the auto attack chain was better. You also gotta think about the trickery 25 point minor trait that gives 15% extra damage with the auto attack chain and critical strikes 25 point minor trait for another 10%.
I like the Improvisation trait buff, but for the rest I say there aren’t many good changes there.

I’ve started using P/D on my D/D zerker build solely for the P/D #3 skill. Open with D/D and troll with P/D #3. Surprisingly it works so far.
What builds!? Thieves still have builds?
This would allow us to perma stealth again like in the old days.
@Aveneo You’re forgetting that Steal is our only class mechanic and we have to sacrifice precious trait points to make it useful moreso than all the other classes.
Nerf Mug by 50% base? It will do less damage than a Sigil of Air. There is already the Sundering Strikes trait in the same trait line as Mug.
Thieves don’t need Protection, we are about evasion, might as well make it Aegis sheesh….
D/D thieves only need a change for Dancing Dagger and Death Blossom, the other skills are good where they are.
OP what you suggest are more of a nerf than an actual change for the better.

Well, the game is out for a bit longer than a year now and all we got so far were some event-like updates. I think it’s about time they came with something big right about now.
We are never safe from nerfs. Even when we get “buffs” it’s a nerf.
And the saddest part about it is that my above statement is not a troll/lie….

Fake or not, I could totally see the devs do this. I mean look at the redundant Venom heal we got.
I have this happen to me a lot of times as well, I noticed it’s not lag, but rather the enemy placement vs the lunge of the Heartseeker when the enemy moves at a certain distance.
You know, you shouldn’t make troll threads such as these. Some dev might actually read it and take it seriously.
I’m not joking, but trust me when I say that the dual shortbow evasion thief with energy runes and the trait that gives initiative when you switch weapons is THE most annoying and even effective build there is. (pvp and wvw obviously) It’s the best troll build around and they will hate you for it.

I can say with certainty that Throw Feathers is the culprit here. It’s bugged and it seems that it’s under most peoples radar.
How long can a Thief stealth for continuously?
In WvW I saw a thief stand his ground verse a group of 20 people , for 5 mins. We had a hard time even finding him.
I want to create such a build and learn how this is done.
D/D:
Hit someone with Cloak and Dagger. When that stealth is almost up, cast CnD again less than half a second before your stealth is over. If you get your timing right, your hit lands after the stealth drops naturally so you don’t get revealed.
However, my favorite way to make people think thieves are OP is to stealth and log off. =P
my favorite is to make ppl chase you, go in refuge and then run through the enemy in opposite direction

they keep running chasing nobody (none even would think about turning around and look back lol), while you run completely somewhere else lol
haha I do that with Infiltrator’s strike and then I just keep running while they chase me then Infiltrator’s return XD
Try to use heartseekers to get away after he does his BP+HS combo. Really it helps a lot to make them waste their initiative, so play a waiting game and use heartseekers to get away whenever d/p builds use their black powder skill.
Everyone Heartseeker spamming towards the enemy zerg. The horror!
But they are barely perma stealthing now and even when they do they have to sacrifice their utility skills now. Nerfing heartseeker will also affect d/d and doing the black powder+heartseeker spam already eats a lot of initiative.
More importantly d/p users are the easiest thief builds to predict, you(OP) yourself said what they do all the time….knowing is half the battle, other players who can’t, deserve to lose.

You’re gimping yourself if you use venoms. They only work in venomshare builds which are already one trick pony kitten builds. There are far better utilities than venoms. If someone lets himself be immobilized for that long then he deserves it.
There’s a reason you very rarely even see these so called “venomshare” builds. They don’t even work in pve btw.
You know what really grinds me gears? It’s when people yell nerf whenever someone finds something on a thief that works. Whatever works for a thief is always OP it seems….. I say it’s bad players who can’t admit that they’re bad.
They are totally unnecessary in this game. Ambush trap should just turn into a trick called Ambush and simply summon the thief instead of being a trap and Shadowtrap could also become a trick. Traps need to replaced by something else entirely.

Last Refuge has been mentioned here one too many times already. The devs seem to be very afraid of making changes to the thief profession.
14k does seem abnormally high for a WvW Thief build, even if he was a glass cannon.
I don’t think Might stacks are really a factor here as every Might stacking build sacrifices DPS in other areas.
Even a 25/30/0/0/15 build, which is pretty rare in WvW would have a hard time hitting those numbers.
It might be possible with a Scholar Runes, full Bloodlust stacks, full Guard stacks a few Might stacks and a few stacks of Vulnerability. But it seems a bit of a stretch.
If you add Assassins Singet_ into that mix then yeah, 14k might well be possible.
I hit a 6k mug in wvw with full signets, ruby orbs. no bloodlust/gaurd stacks so i’m gona go ahead and say its very much possible XD

You hit for 1.6 k with steal do a cnd bs combo 4,someting k 6,something k and then hit with steal again for over 6k.
Your damage seems quite normal except for one the abnormally high mug/steal. Especially since mug can not crit.
I smell a bug I dub it “accidental double damage” would not be the 1st mmo with this kind of bug.
Well the first steal could be unbuffed, whereas the 6k one could be fully buffed and/or on an upleveled player.
Shortbow has only two flaws; Only one trait that directly affects it and it’s also a very weak trait nobody ever takes and the Surprise shot is rather lackluster since the whole weapon set doesn’t even have access to stealth.
Two things need to be done to the set to make it better imo which are; Surprise shot needs to change to Focused shot that does a ton of damage much like a backstab, this would really make the shortbow very versatile and isn’t really OP since they have limited stealth access.
Secondly we need a trait that increases some range on some skills, like the shortbow #5 and maybe #2, because #2 is now only used at point blank range these days if at all, I say #5 because the current range is very quirky when you run and use it, the time the shot is fired you have already ran a few steps and the shadowstep gap is shortened, so we don’t actually get a 900range shadowstep, but it works fine when you use it while stationary.
Umm I don’t want to put more oil on the fire, but it is much better to simply use skale venom as your only venom and use the Infiltrator’s Signet for an addional shadowstrike.
So: skale venom → shadow strike → steal → shadow strike →Infiltrator’s Signet →shadow strike.
Thieves guild’s cooldown is simply too long to be a dependant skill for regular use.
If it happened really fast it might have been a crit based p/p build with venomshare+thieves guild and unload spam.
Apparently none of you have played S/D in competitive PvP and combined BV with LS to stop that guardian Shelter and secure the point.
Shelter lasts 2 seconds BV’s activation time is 1 sec, Flanking Strike activation is 0.5sec, Larcenous Strike activation is 0.5sec
Only in an ideal situation can you pull that off, unless you can see the future…..
Even with all the changes you all suggest I still think it’s not enough. The problem with both venoms and traps is fundamental. In my opinion venoms should be applied on the thief and give an unique boon, but also a downside for the duration.
Something like for example a “Berserker” venom that temporarily makes all your attacks unblockable+gives you an extra 30% crit damage buff for the duration, however during this time you take constant damage.
as for traps, I’ve never seen anyone use them EVER. Ambush trap should just be a summon imo, shadow trap is not that bad, but the mechanic needs to change so it actually teleports you and the other traps are way too situational to the extent that they’re never worth it.
Currently Devourer Venom is better.
Venomshare in itself is worthless to begin with. I know that people would want their own unique builds, but venoms themselves are subpar when compared to the other skills save for traps. Sharing the venoms is also a waste since most venoms aren’t that good to begin with.
Just maybe if the lifesteal mechanic could also crit, we could make a nice p/p unload burster when all 5 venoms are popped with residual venoms and maybe Improvisation for a chance to refresh all your venoms for another burst, but as it stands now just forget about it.

Well if we look at the past we find that nearly if not all that has been leaked before turned out to be true.
If we really get the skelk venom as we know it now, it needs some traits changed for it to be viable for more than venomshare builds(which are imo useless most of the time anyway)
An example would be to make the Leeching Venoms trait also being able to crit (both the heal and damage part)
Another thing that can be done is to make the skelk venom interact in various ways with your other venoms (mixing the venoms for different effects) I don’t see this happening ever though.
That being said, I wonder if its cooldown can be reset by the Improvisation trait -_^
But after 10Dec thieves and “prolonged fight” won’t mix well together anymore regardless of extra initiative regen….
Ricochet belongs in the Deadly Art tree and Improvisation should take its place in Trickery tree. It makes sense.
Jon , you sir underestimate just how crucial infiltrator return is to an S/D thief’s survivability, if you didn’t you guys would not even consider nerfing it by adding a cast time to it.
The only thing you’ll accomplish with this change is make people quit sword ( i for sure will ) , i already know a lot of thieves that are practicing pistol dagger or that plan on rolling a different class.
How your team think this nerf is a good idea is mind boggling, if you took your thief out in WvW or SPvP regularly you’d see why we are outraged.
You do realize they did this so our thieves can’t escape their beloved warrior’s stuns right? I mean: doom on anything that even looks funny against a warrior.

kitten that stun lasts soooo long and is on a low cooldown weapon skill when we thieves have an elite that is on a 45 second cooldown with like a 1 second stun…….just wow…….
What I don’t understand is that Assassin’s reward is still a very lackluster trait even more so now that it is a grandmaster trait regardless of the buff it got.
The heal is still too little and now that it’s a grandmaster trait it should be compared to another healing grandmaster trait which is Shadow’s Rejuvenation
I’m sorry, but nobody would want to go 30 points into Acrobatics for that trait. Well maybe a d/d Deathblossom build, but they only really work in pve solo play….
