Stun duration is unvalance needs change

yes, however one sigil should not be as valuable as 6 runes + food. If there were stun duration food, and stun duration runes then yes, I would expect the increase in duration to be roughly on par (stat budget wise, not % wise) as a full set of reduction gear.

Stuns in GW2 are meant to be short by design. Look at other MMOs and you see hard CCs that last 10s or longer, ANet made a decision not to go down that route. There are several reasons for this, not the least of which is a lack of diminishing returns on CCs (this is not something that is easy to add in post-launch as it requires some pretty serious database changes to know which spell line a player has been affected with and when).

Stuns, knockdowns/backs, fears, dazes etc all serve the same purpose in PVP combat, they a) interrupt the currently casting spell, b) they prevent spell casting for X amount of time. The only outlayer in that list is Daze which allows player controlled movement, all the others are exactly the same functionality. So yes, stun, fear, knockback and knockdown DO do the same thing (stun being arguably the more powerful one as it locks players in one location and thus you can put a ground AOE under their feet for extra damage).

sorry, but I dissagree.

1) Anyone dropping that much of their stat budget into CC reduction should be hard to CC. Not having a good DPS or survival rune set and food is a major reduction in effectiveness that may not even come into play depending on who you are fighting off against.

2) Even a 0.1s stun will interrupt casting. GW2 is not a game of long term CCs, it was one of the original design decisions IIRC, that players would not be out of control of their character for long parts of the fight (like WoW). Using a short stun will stop a heal, a high damage attack, could even force the use of a stun breaker if the player panics.

Reasons to Remove or Change Defiant

Imperatora.7654

I +1ed this.

I make MMOs for a living (game design) and Defiant always confused me. In a game with so much hype for “breaking the holy trinity” and whatnot, Defiant brings us to the “holy single spec worth taking”.

As the OP mentioned, right now there is no point in doing anything but glass cannon in PVE. “The best CC is dead” has turned into “the only CC is dead”. Anything that increases the time a boss is alive radically increases the odds of player death.

Removing CC immunity can add a LOT of options for new PVE mechanics, as we have seen with the gauntlet. We need bosses that have solutions that don’t boil down to “kill it so fast we can ignore the mechanics”.

That said, uninteruptable One Hit Knock Outs (ohko) should be absolutely avoided in general PVE (it’s fine for the gauntlet, but not ok in dungeons). Ohkos bring us right back to stacking DPS at the expense of all other stats as a necro with 30khp is just as dead as a glass cannon guardian with ~10k.

EDIT: if this seems like a ramble, I’ve not had my morning coffee yet….

1. Are high heels on a fighting robot, inconsistent with the realism of the rest of the game?

My argument is no. The reason is because high heels are just as impractical as not wearing a shirt when you live in the snow, or building floating platforms that you can barely jump to, just to get to a crafting station.

I will admit that it is new, and different, but it is no more or less impractical than many other design choices in this game.

I’m going to make an assumption here, and please feel free to call me on it if I’m wrong… but you’ve never worn 4" or higher heels have you?

There is “impractical” as in a race born and raised in an extremely northern mountain range finding the weather hundreds if not thousands of kilometers south of their homelands warm enough for a t-shirts and shorts (think Inuit going to see a balmy NorCal winter, yeah there is snow, but it’s 30-40 degrees F warmer than what they would call a “real winter”), and there is impractical that will snap your ankles like a twig when you first try and pivot.

Now, you can argue that since the WKs are robots, their ankles are stronger than a humans, and I give you that… but it wouldn’t affect the pathetic grip that heels that high have. Look at any combat boot worn in the last 5000 years of human warfare, one of the constants is good traction. You have features like natural rubber soles, good grip profile, and a flat sole to keep as much on the ground as possible. Heels on the other hand, have a tiny spike at the back (which will sink into anything softer than concrete), and a very small patch of sole under the toes only. Combined, you are looking at an 80-90% reduction in traction… an angry Asura could push the WKs around like toys as they skidded over the ground.

About the only practical advantage high heels could have in a combat setting is 4" more height to see by, which if you played the robot card earlier is useless as you could make the neck 4" longer and have a better overall combat platform.

The nightmare court is a specific set of ideals that some sylvari have. Why cant a sylvari be evil without being a part of the court? Sylvari are shaped by the world around them, one could easily do that.

Actually if you think about sylvari, it’s kind of sad. We throw what are essentially children into the world to find their own way. Its no wonder some of them come out bad.

It’s not a matter of it can or cannot, it is a matter I personally find it weak and something else could of been done to make it better. Again this is my opinion that the story could of been taken a different direction that would of made it a lot better.

You may find it weak, however there are Sylvari pirates and other like “baddies” that are not directly affiliated with the NC.

I strongly suggest you do a bit of reading up on the NC, Sylvari culture and history as some of the opinions you’ve stated are flat out countered by a lot of lore. It’s like saying “it’s my opinion that Asura are taller than Norn.”

“Whining” never gets things nerfed, math does.

What about the math that the whiners will cause a mass exodus if nothing is changed? O.o?

I believe that the “math in accounting” and the “math in marketing” trumps the “math in development.” Am I wrong?

yeah, pretty much wrong.

Even the most horrid whining campaign might make up a whole one percent of your playerbase (at most), and that is a posting spree that GW2 has yet to see in any of their class forums. Even if absolutely every one of them left the game, it would be a blip on the churn rates for that month and nothing more.

However, a systemic imbalance can cost you ten times that or more in the short term and kill your product long term. This is caused by a top-down churn, where your best players leave due to a broken meta… after the top players go you start losing the middle players as they find out all they have to look forward to is a progressively more and more broken game. Ultimately, without your twitch.tv casters, your machinima artists, and your PVP montage makers, you lose a lot more than just those whining.

I’ve never once seen, heard of, or known anyone who has experienced a “marketing induced nerf/buff”. This simply does not happen. Yes, we will RARELY see a manager come in and say something like “There is a lot of noise about X, can you take a look at it?” Which usually gets the reply “Already tested, balance is fine, here is the math.” This is because we usually spend hours reading the forums a week. Most companies (at least all the ones I’ve worked for) have a policy that only a select few have permission to post, but we all are required to read (my last contract had that as a clause).

Yes, whining can help get an issue looked at, but nothing more.

Now, that is assuming we are talking a sub/b2p business model. Many f2p games, especially MOBAs, will use a rolling inequality system to drive players to buy new content (ie: champions). This type of “marketing trumping systems” model is perhaps most blatantly seen in Tribes: Ascend, where newly introduced weapons were obscenely overpowered to the point of being a joke to drive players to buy them before they were adjusted back down to where they should have been.

just wanted to give a little “inside” info.

I’m a game developer, I make MMOs for a living (no, I will not tell you where I work as discussing that could get me fired until the game is publicly announced).

“Whining” never gets things nerfed, math does. Now, a lot of people going off about something on the forums WILL get that thing looked at, but without math to back it up it will not be touched. I can’t speak to what aNet does, but at my company everything like a trait has a stat budget that we try to use to keep things level. Things like range, trigger conditions, effect, stackability etc all build up to give a “trait” a score.

If the score is too high, it gets adjusted.

that said, there ARE ways to improve your chances of having your balance requests heard and acted on:

1) Math. Saying “X is op/up!” is next to worthless feedback. Saying “X is op/up by this amount and here is the math proving it:” is far better

2) Include a test case. “X class did Y damage! NERF!” again, useless. Listing the exact conditions (buffs/debuffs, gear, full stats if possible, abilities) that the dev can use to recreate exactly what you saw is VASTLY more likely to get things addressed

3) Videos/screenshots are nice, but do not replace #1 or #2.

Toughness should reduce condition damage...

in Suggestions

Posted by: Imperatora.7654

Imperatora.7654

if toughness countered conditions it would be the win/win/win defensive stat.

It would win vs burst builds (when combined with sufficient vitality)
It would win vs condition builds (see above)
It would win vs long duration fights (when combined with sufficient healing power)

There would be nothing it couldn’t do.

Right now, all three defensive stats have a hole in them… Toughness gets creamed by conditions, Vitality gets destroyed by long duration fights, and healing power gets nuked by burst. If you only bring one to the party you run the risk of getting stomped and that is a good thing. If you plug toughnesses hole, you will need to do the same to the other two to keep things even.

If I want two, or gods forbid 4 turrets in a build, would you really expect me to have to swap between each one to command each of them to change target or even fire their basic attack? They would have to be buffed to absurd levels to even remotely be on par with non-turret damage (just one turret would have to do as much damage by itself under your system as a Grenadier speced engie).

It sounds bad for a single turret, and outright horrible for more than that.

kit swaps have no CD and a lot of traits encourage engis to kit swap. without packs, you need to wait till they attack and then hope they stay in the same kit. With the pack, you can be ready upon the kit swap.

that ONLY holds for med, bomb and grenade kit. All the others have as visible a weapon as the other classes. I’ve also never met anyone who was able to ID the kit used in battle by the kit before the engie used a skill. Goodness knows I can’t, especially if they are facing towards me, are Asura, have any kind of z-axis advantage, are in the grass/trees, are part of a zerg, are partially behind a wall, or it’s night time.

Finding bugs is not hard.. balance testing is hard. God help us if the playerbase is involved in validating balance changes..

I’d bet you my house and first born child that they are aware of every single item youre thinking of and many more. Take whatever complexity you have in mind regarding managing significant software development and raise it 2 orders of magnitude..

TLDR: Your oversimplification cannot be understated enough.

Dear gods this. As a game dev I can virtually guarantee that they know about your complaints better than you do. When I was on my last live project we were required to spend no less than one hour a day lurking on the forums.

Best way to get bugs fixed:

1) Opinions are not fact, facts need a test case. If you “feel” something is out of whack, prove it with math.
2) Controlled tests are infinitely more valuable than uncontrolled ones. “There was this thief, not sure what build they were using, but he hit me for like 20,000 damage!” is useless… “A thief, using X stats and Y gear with Z buffs, hit me for exactly 20192 while I was using X Y and Z when their tooltip said they should only hit me for 18923.” is extremely useful.
3) Make sure your test is easily repeatable. If it takes an alignment of the stars, it is more difficult to test (not impossible IF you note exactly what stars need to be aligned and how).
4) if possible, take a video of your test case. Trust me, it makes it FAR easier for QA/Devs to validate when they can see what you’ve done.

If you follow all 4, grats, you just became part of the solution. If you post “X is broke because it was broke 8 months ago and no one has tested it since launch”… not so much.

Turrets STILL "useless"

in Engineer

Posted by: Imperatora.7654

Imperatora.7654

Sweety, The Colbert Show is satire, This Hour Has 22 Minutes is satire… that was insulting.

And no, I’m not overestimating anything, I’m basing it exactly on first hand knowledge based on my job history. The places that have paid me to make games. Triple-A MMOs have teams in the several hundreds (last one I was on was “small” at 250 employees). Generally, about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of that is developers, the rest QA (not counting customer service as that will bump it up another 200+). Any MMO is going to have what is known as a “Systems Design Team”, These are the guys and gals who come up with the formulas, stats, drop rates, economic design etc that make the back end of the game work. What you are actually playing is a shiny interface over their formulas.

Most games have 1-3 Lead designers. A small game, or a single player can get away with one, larger MMOs will need more. This is where the “there are two designers on it” misquote comes from. They were referring to LEAD designers, not total bodies on the problem. The team on average, from my experience, will range from as low as 5 in pre-production up to 20 during full on crunch, and back down to about 10 for a live project. I would be extremely impressed if ANet can do what they do on a team smaller than that.

The programmers, specifically game-play programmers (GPPs) usually outnumber the designers two to one, as it is often FAR faster to design a system than it is to implement. So 20+ is not an exaggeration.

and I’m glad you know what a 100h week feels like… now put yourself in the shoes of someone who just had some fella come up and tell you how lazy you are for not having every single problem fixed to their exact requirements, ignoring the fact that some of it may be so far down on your list of priorities as to not even matter, may be technically impossible, may be relying on work from someone else in another country, or may be extremely easy, extremely important, but your manager says it needs to be delayed?

Would that make you lazy? Hell no.

Turrets STILL "useless"

in Engineer

Posted by: Imperatora.7654

Imperatora.7654

What puzzles me most is how they have been ‘buffing’ turrets for 2 patches now, in some attempt to open up more builds… but failed to even recognise the main weaknesses of turrets.

My only tough is that current devs don’t have access to the source code, but only a limited control panel to change some variable numbers.

It could also be as simple as: they don’t recognise these issues as the real problems with turrets because they have limited personal experience with them.

Perhaps. Or perhaps its sheer laziness.

Lets set the scene. You are one of only two developers that have to deal with all professions, their balance, bug fixes, everything in all 3 gamemodes.

Now, after a couple of drinks, you’ve worked up the courage to finally open that file on Engineers. You prefer not to go there, its a mess! But, a job is a job. You figure you want to make Turrets more appealing, and you wanna get it done as fast as possible. Because you’re not a fan of Engineers and you’re busy! Its already noon and you just realized you havent buffed Thieves yet!

Okay, back to Turrets. Are you going to spend your time working out the complicated targeting algorythm of Turrets, aswell as figuring out a balanced system where Turrets are durable enough without being unkillable?
Or, would you rather slap a kitten buff on them? Something that sounds big, neglecting that 100% more of nothing is still nothing?

Yah, i thought so. Case closed, now you earned yourself another drink and then you can start with your monthly “balance” of Thieves… maybe we should let em fly… hic

As someone who makes MMOs for a living, that post would make me far less likely to read anything else in this thread. Putting in months of 100+ hour weeks to cram for launch, lazy? How many 100h weeks have you done? (without overtime pay)

The shear level of ignorance in your post almost makes my eyes bleed. Two lead designers != two developers total. The last game I made had two leads “making class balance decisions” with a team of 10 designers under them, and 20-30 programmers under that.

I was not permitted to comment on our live forums, but I read that thing every day. 1-3 hours were spent looking over customer feedback, they never knew it, but we all did. for every dev post you see, thousands of threads were read. But we are human, and when people start breaking out the baseless insults, we go to other threads.

If you want to kitten off the devs to the point they stop reading, well I would bet my last copper “mission accomplished”. If you think you are “helping”, go to the warrior sub-forum, they need your type of “help” more.

Pve, I love my mes more than any other class. Between clones taking hits for me, and the 3% less damage for every clone out, I needed very little “tank” gear leveling up which let me do quite a bit more damage than my other characters of similar level.

More damage = faster kills.

I also love that with shatter I only need to kill a mob to about 33%, then hit f1 to win. The clones are all going to die in a few seconds anyway, might as well pop em.

as much as I love this, it won’t happen.

The hobosacks serve an important purpose, telegraphing to other players what skills you have. Much like how you know what a warrior can do when they have a rifle equipped, players need to know what an engineer can do when they have a kit out. While this is a non-issue for the flamethrower and the elixer gun, the others either have very small weapons (tool) or none at all (’nade and bomb).

I’m not too keen on this method as a) the sacks aren’t that visually distinct (especially on an Asura) and b) you don’t get to see much of them if your target is facing you.

I would love to see the sacks go away, but that would require them putting in weapon “skins” for the bomb and grenade kit and likely reworking the wrench for the tool kit to make it more obvious which is which.

Just a quick look at Anet’s website shows they are hiring a bunch of people.

If you are going to make an argument, stick by your guns. If you are so unsure of yourself, then please keep your thoughts to yourself until you are sure.
