I dont know about others S/D thieves. Im having trouble getting enough dmg on my sword it is ridicoulous.Before patch I had great burst with sword,could have use steal+c&d+skill #1 and down a thief easly with basic auto attack,now I barly get them to 50% health,while one backstab does 10k dmg on me with 2.649 armor…my build is http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-g;4Vw-_07-R-Fd0;9;4MIJ;0237148246;4IN0;3m9fgm9fgi-FvF676;2VhVlWqXv214752kVL-2ie

I dont complain about backstab or how I die/lose or such a thing,just wanted to make sure this is not just me here.And if it does,what am I doing wrong,cause I got my fair share of playing thief and S/D is my most beloved spec.

Things I see that need to be improve:
1.bring back the quickness-on-crit trait.
2.scale sword dmg up by at least 10-15%.

-I dont complain about Acrobatics,since before patch I didnt even used that line.

Sooo I am not the person that complains on forums or even create topics. But seriously what were you thinking when you designed the Actobatic line. It is completely useless.
S/d thiefs are completely useless. It was the only build I really enjoyed playing. It feels like you are forcing us to play d/p with SA/DA and Trickery which is the most BORING build a thief can play. So where is the “build variety”, all i can see is either you go d/p or nothing.
I used to play D/D long ago untill you destroyed it aswell so whats up with the hate for thiefs. All you had to do was leave the Acrobatics line as it was and ADD something new to it like you did with other classes. It kinda saddens me since I play since launch. I am playing all classes except ranger ( cause its ridiculous) but I main thief and I had the feeling that the other classes got buffed stronger than thieves. Just my opinion.

Completly agree with you,tho try playing DA/CS/Trickery , with all the ferocity traits,you’ll crit 6k atuo attacks with sword it really nice.

Yeah .. you only have 4 GB of RAM, so it may happen that your windows wants to
swap to your HDD now and then, and the low space can be a problem.

Try to make some more space available.

Also upgrade to 8 GB would also not be bad.

Didnt had this problem 2 years playing the game.Why now? problem still occur.

Spectral grasp is buggy. You cant be sure that the skill would work,and even if it does,the projectile is obvious(like throwing a basketball on your face) easy to dodge ot sidestepped even. overall this skill is not reliable and that is why necros prefer not to use it,if anet gonna give it a bit of love you gonna see it more and more. i am switching for grasp and wall on different situation in wvw though.

Reaper is good for solo roaming,small group roaming and pvp.
Core necro is good for zerging(raiding),small group roaming(less so than reaper though) and pvp?(i mean necro,specifically power ones,are only playable cause of lich)

I get this random image freeze(very random) but sound still on as if nothing happend and I think I can still play even though my image is frozen(playing blindly).I can still minimize the game,and restarting it fixing the problem temporarly. it started to happen 1-2 months ago.

My system:
GTX650TI Boost
intel core i5 4590 3.1ghz
8 GB ram

My ingame settings:
Animation-medium
Textures-medium
shaders-medium
Character model limit-medium
character quality-medium

other things on low.

Crate is 1s cast, has 1200 range, gives you like 6k heal via bandages, and a bunch of turrets, that among other things, proc accel packed turrets.

way better than this new elite.

Should ask for a shorter cast time, too. 2 second wind up for a stability source is asking for interruptions. Why it was decided for necros to take 1 second longer to scream 4 words vs transforming into a giant Lich is beyond me.

And well’s are zone denial weapons — no one person is going to stay in a well for any length of time if they are not heavily controlled via stuns/immobo so you can’t expect their full effect to be placed on a particular foe. In this way the shouts are superior — while they may not effect as many total targets (due to enemies entering and leaving the well) they DO totally effect 5 targets: 5 targets lose boons and get 10stax of vuln, 5 targets get condi’s and chill etc and there is VERY little counterplay. Foes effected by your shouts are hampered directly and are easier to kill whereas you may end up dealing more total damage via a well, but that damage is split into small packets amongst a much larger number of enemies and thus is fairly ineffectual (by yourself).

I’d opt for both. With the way it functioned during the preview, it would be X amount of Stability per target struck. Whether that will be in stacks with a set duration or duration a set amount of stacks, gaining both resistance and stability would be a very welcomed utility, as well as making “Chilled to the Bone!” a worthy Elite.

I agree,but first,the most important thing is to have stability and not just ressitance,if we can get both ti will be very whalecuming(:P) indeed.

Thief heal is instant.

You could argue that the roll is the cast time since you can’t do other things while its being done.

Chances are, the Shout heal will have a cast time of some sort.

You could argue that, but you’re evading while it is being done, aren’t you? That’s a pretty good consolation prize.

Also, people seem to think that all of the abilities are going to take 1.5 – 2 seconds to cast because ANet emphasizes big wind-up. However, the AoE chill/stun from Shroud looks like it maybe takes a half-second. The spin looks like it hits continuously. The pull from GS looks like it goes off in a half-second or so. The attack after the pull probably takes .75 – 1 second.

But you can set yourself up to land a .75 – 1 second attack. If you couldn’t, you already wouldn’t with the current Necro. Some might take a bit longer, but I think ANet considers 1 second to be “super slow”. Which it is. But it is quite a bit faster than 2 seconds.

And that’s what Dagger #3 is for anyway!

Your build seems nice,however,the video you given,is not doing any favors for it.

Your fights seems to be awfully longish,especially vs necros which you should steamroll especially with “inturrpt build” .

You saying CI is killer for thieves,as a thief main,I never ever got downed on first CI and never ever got downed cause of getting caught with first CI.Im using s/d and always have shadow return when needed.(sword skill)

Thanks for the input. The video was purely meant to showcase the play style, of which I think it does rather well even if not perfect. I realize some of those opponents weren’t especially skilled and I noted that in my OP.

Not every thief runs s/d or withdraw. If a thief can be immobilized and can’t readily cleanse, they’re in big trouble. That kinda goes without saying with any class, but for thieves in particular if they’re stuck in a spot for an measure of time it’s usually worse for them than most other classes.

The necro fight should not have gone on as long. Unfortunately I missed dodging signet of spite when I re-engaged. Also in this version of the build I wasn’t running mantra of distraction, which I do now and it’s much more effective.

Yea,but most thieves who dont run s/d and withdraw run hide in the shadows or shadow embrace.That said thieves w/o condi cleanse will get owned by that build,but that is for every condi build they face. I think your build is like very fun to play but not as strong as the usual builds.This is my opinion of course.

I play Celestial powermancer in arenas and do pretty well. I switch between ranked and unranked so the leaderboards will not reflect the true success of the build.

I like this variation because it is tankier and has a mixture of strong power damage and condition pressure. I use plague instead of lich elite for the clutch stability finishers and plague revives, and with celestial amulet the plague outputs strong condition pressure. Celestial also boosts the conditions I push onto opponents with plague signet.

Good mobility with warhorn and pack runes. Very high crit from the fury and precision from pack runes and celestial amulet. Very comparable damage output to berserker amulet.

Lich elite is a “win more” ability, in my opinion. You need to use lich while you’re still healthy and high HP so that you don’t insta-die. If you’re high HP, you’re already in a winning position, so lich is just “win more”. Plague actually helps you survive and relieves you from focus because of its high toughness, allowing you to continue being a threat in fights instead of insta-exploding from focus.

it won’t damage like berserker. It won’t damage like carrion. Healing power is pretty much useless, you are basically nerfing yourself. Nos didn’t dodge for like a minute literally stood in one place and you got a perfect fear off good job, if he was taking you seriously he would have won.

fourthmore,it is not so hard to fight him,he just happens to play on high level dosnt mean he is the top necro dueler,I bet there are lots better than him.

I dont think the build you posted is better than the meta one since,the differences is not that much,you could tank a little bit more,but do you want to tank? as in why tanking when you can kill faster and still tank a bit less? I mean necros have already big sustain,and I was never ever got beaten by thief on my necro(in WvW) and NEVER EVER got beaten by thief and ele in a “Surprise 2v2” like you described,winning 2v1 is very rare,you need to use terrain,and count on one of the two mistake,if thats not gonna happen I excpect anyone to lose. getting suprised attack on your thief tho,that is fatal for you more than to a necro,so why not ranting about that?

From your logic,you can kill anyone by simplifying it.

for example:
Hambow warrior→wait till he is not CC or AoE around him.
Necro→wait till the necro out of DS.
Engi→wait till he waste his supply crate.

If only the dodges were the thief problem against us.

Also Relevant to The Current Gw2 Mesmer is the introduction of the new condition Slow. I think we can expect to see some of this in our new Specialization.

I would absolutely hope so. Hell, I’ve said for months that time slowdown or freezing would be a darned fun addition to Mesmers. Especially if the Mes Spec. is called a bleeding Chronomancer.

Otherwise, drawing on my (admittedly) sparse knowledge of GW1, Revenant seems -overall- like a Ritualist/Dervish crossbreed. Which could be entertaining. My only honest complaint is that -with some of the preexisting issues on our current eight
Professions- it seems a tad … premature to add in Profession #9. Suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

Who said it gonna be Chronomancer? it is pure speculation afaik

So I’ve been asking a lot on different twitch streams what people think. Could a team with a power necro win one of these big gw2 tourneys or is it just not capable of competing at that level?

Most say necros don’t have enough mobility and escapability but could we if we used wurm and spectral walk effectively? I’m still learning the ropes in spvp and am getting better but still don’t know a lot about the game. But it would definitely be disappointing if my favorite class and build couldn’t be used if I ever did get to that level.

The problem with being a power necro, is far and above it’s inability to escape effectively. Couple this with a general inability to apply consistent (Wells are not consistent) AOE power pressure. Yes dagger is now a great cleave weapon, however it is very tough to pull off in the AOE spam fest other classes can bring (Eles/engis oh hey look at the meta). Other problems power necros have in the current meta:

  • Lack of reflects/projectile absorption (pew pew rangers can eat a power necro alive)
  • Lack of access to boons for self. (Yes I know this is class design, it is still a major issue for necros.)
  • Lack of stability/reliable stunbreaks.
  • Lack of a good ranged power weapon (I would rather auto attack with staff than auto attack with axe.)
  • Being unable to receive heals in DS, ( I am referring to team heals, this one thing would improve Necro sustain to an amazing level)

That being said, if you have a good team that knows how to peel for you, how to give stability and when to focus a target. A power necro can destroy a team fight in as little as 10 seconds (without lich form.)

I think Anet is worried about touching necros in a meaningful way right now. The last time necros got some serious love “dhuumfire” got introduced and necros became the most OP class this game had seen in a long time. I think the one thing that Anet needs to look at is the escapes and survivability of our class. When you look at classes like s/f eles and s/d thieves they have great damage and pretty good survivability. Necros need something similar for them to become a legitimate power build.

THIS…this sums up everything about power necro and even necros in general.

I am a decent power necro,playing for almost 1 year as only power(never touched condi builds),but when my friend who is very good pvper,but new to ranger,just won every duel agaisnt me on pew pew.Just one time I beat him when used lich and exit lich form right after(for the stability).

About wells,ppl saying it is not effective,it is not true,cause you need to know how to use it,as in on enemy downed player while ppl trying to ress and on ppl you immoblized with dagger for examp,you can also fear them in wells.

Blind a mesmer = no phants which is a major source of damage.
Blind a thief = make any weapon skill miss, and we are back in business. Bec Of no cds.

Stealth is also a huge factor, i dont think its an excuse.

Shatter burst needs 3 clones proper positioning, thief burst? Stealth and backstab. Air and fire sigils makes the burst harder.

Landing a 5 clone shatter is easier?

Cele ele is not the same cheese As PU mesmer, can PU mesmer hold a point? Cele can keep a point contseted while having all that boons, regen and burst.

Do you see PU mesmers in high tiered pvp?

Blind is typical to D/p thieves,which easly die with one key inturpt,if you didnt killed a thief that you just inturpt his blackpowder+hs combo,it is your own fault not the mechanic.

I can counter every thing you say,cause you just compare thief main purpose,with mesmer side purpose,thief got only backstab as for high dmg attack(if we talking about d/p)shatter mesmer? pick your poison:ibeserker,iduelist,iswordsman,even iwarlock(used it with CI after inturpt the thief had like 5-6 conds and single hit gave him 7k dmg),it is true the backstab got much more dmg from those I mentioned,but for example GS #2 skill at close range (as backstab)even infront of the player with mindwrack,does the same dmg as backstab.

D/p never was a problem for mesmer afaik,it is those S/d thieves evading around,which I still have nothing I can do about them,but same as other things in life,everyone has its counter.

About PU mesmer not holding points,ask Pyro,he says you can.And mesmers are in tough spot at high level pvp in general,cause they offer nothing to the team which other classes not offering already.Not because they are easy kills.

Exactly. Thief would be harder than mesmer if thief didn’t have stealth (I know stealth isn’t immunity but it helps you run away or slip by on low HP unnoticed) and a lot of ports, it is generally more squishy but it has either a lot of blinds and stealth in DP + ports to survive or evades + ports in sd.
Rotations on ele? Go to a on going fight and don’t die. While mesmer rotations depend on your, your teams and enemy cooldowns, respawns, your weapon set, your utilities, enemy thief location ect.

This is rather bunch of excuses to me:
1.“Thief got stealth”-mesmer have shatters AND a bit of stealth.
2.“Thief got evades”-same as above,it is either thief evade a lot or stealth alot,depending on the build.
3.“Ele have self regen self heal”-that is Cele ele which is cheese as PU mesmer in comparsion.So please if you gonna compare things,compare full zerk ele to shatter mesmer.Better yet,play as zerk d/d ele now and tell me.Cause I tried.

The general idea here is that mesmer requires extra skill to play,which is not.Every class can be mastered,even playing as mindless warrior requires to understand it.I get it,you are dedicated mesmers who wants to show that mesmer are the hardest class to master,I want to think that it is too,but in reality necros,thieves and eles are not easy going aswell.Maybe you should play them to understand.

Will I bound to use flash wurm? or spectral walk? both of these are our only escapes as far as I know,and the flash wurm is kinda useless in wvw combat,we only got the spectral walk which is also not that great.Being power necro,I really cant avoid CC(except with dodges or getting stability via elite O.o) + cant really avoid pressure.

My question is,do you have tricks or ways to avoid constant pressure(for example getting 2 sticky warriors attack you or ranger from far) I just shout to my temmates help me im gonna get downed :[ I really dont know how to avoid pressure when it happens,cant escape!

Shatter mesmer does perfectly fine against thieves.

The problem is most shatter mesmers insist on being chained to a particular weapon and utility setup (staff/GS with portal) and aren’t flexible about changing their build or play-style to match the opponent in a given match.

“Shatter Mesmer” is to vague. It could include MAIM Shatter, which does perfectly fine against thieves (thanks to condi’s, or torment on scepter block (counter pressure application)).

We’re talking IP Shatter here, aka double ranged shatter, or GS sword/torch/pistol. The typical setup that makes this build viable (for all intents and purposes), and the so caled “meta” build. 4, 4, 0, 0, 6.

Lolz,it is not “vague” everyone knows when somone saying shatter mesmer,is for the IP one.The “Maim shatter” is just called condi shatter.

Define “thieves”?

Cause I have no problem against power necro on any thief build(maybe p/p but that because I dont play that kitten) and I have no probs killing cond necros on x/d with shadow embrace and reju.too easy infact.Even wtihout those traits I prolly can kill them easly and the majority of thieves are the same.Necros are in a hard spot in general.Hopefully the Greatwsord would give them somthing/

At the moment, shatter mesmer is the hardest class/build to play in the entire game when it comes to PvP.

Bold statement.Not true at all. And im playing only mesmer in pvp.

Playing s/s-staff with CI lockdown build for 4-5 months,and while it was hard at start,I can now take even 1v2’s ( very depended on the other ppl class tho).I find it hard against other mesmers tho,typically shatter and condi ones.

Very nice topic Chaos!

I would like to add that,Lockdown build can be catagorized as phantasm build.You’ll want to set phantasms on for pressure,while your inturrpts not only doing base dmg,they also quickly stack vurnability on enemies,and might on you.This chain of events could lead to immense dmg output.I would say Lockdown build,may be called even Lockphasm :P

Easier to say which I dont bother focusing at:Heavies and engineers.(mosto fthe times)

Ppl are to forget,if you have a full party of mesmer at your disposal(5 mesmers)
and you know things like Timewrap and Null-field effects only 5 ppl,let the use all the Timewraps and null fields on clash you will see how your small zerg can melt bigger zergs.

im using spectral full zerk build,but I feel im too squishy for these fights.
