Is GW2 worth playing without expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Allelya.6830

Allelya.6830

There are still things to do, world boss events, dungeons, pvp- the regular gw2 content HoT is an expansion but more of a farm fest for events youll get more personal story, new armors, explorable map and new weapons if you dont care for that stuff then don’t purchase it.

More of a farm fest? I thought we were getting some kind of new raiding thing or something?? I’m confused.

First, I am on Gates of Madness but I don’t do PvP, WvW or the like (unless it’s to level a little). I’m a female gamer who loves to do PvE. I love to explore, collect and complete. I’m not looking for a special guild (LGBT, etc). Just a guild with lots of PvE casuals like me!

Most of my friends have left the game to play others (ESO, WoW, etc) and the few I have left are on the other side of the world so I don’t get to see them online all that often. I play daily, sometimes daytime and sometimes evenings, and sometimes all freakin day long! (depends if I have to work and whatnot)

So if there’s room for me in your guild, let me know!!
(You can also add me to friends!)

“Could I buy them? Certainly. But it is not something a new player could do. Even if the cash isn’t a barrier at that level, the skill point cost certainly is.”

And this is why you can buy gems with RL cash and convert them to gold. THAT’S what ANet wants you to do. They don’t have a sub fee, they have an ingame shop- they WANT you to spend RL cash on things they’ve gated.

Doesn't Need To Be Harder

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Allelya.6830

Allelya.6830

I really don’t feel that the content needs to be made easier, but there should be more of a learning curve that teaches people to get the most out of their classes.

The bigger problem is that open world is so easy that the first time a player encounters something difficult (e.g. a dungeon, or some of the new LS instances), they’re completely unprepared.

FWIW, I’ve been running the LS instances on my glass thief with little problem. For the last episode I swapped in valk gear instead of zerk (DPS didn’t really matter and the unavoidable hits while channeling the flame make some extra vitality nice).

Try playing with your build, use different weapons, etc. Thief has a lot of survivability, especially against elite or lower mobs — you can basically just keep everything blinded with black powder (all of their attacks will miss if they attack slow enough) or just spam Pistol Whip (it has an looooong evade frame that isn’t listed in the tooltip). Pistol Whip + Signet of Malice (heal) + Invigorating Precision (GM trait in the precision line) will get you through pretty much any encounter. Lots of DPS, lots of evades, and lots of healing.

What weapons / gear / traits were you using? Maybe we could give you some tips

Let me personally thank you for being constructive and helpful instead of resorting to insults and such. I did, in fact, add a few new friends from this thread and got some help. I’m also looking into setting up more weapons for in my bags because I didn’t know I could just change out when the situation needs me to (other than the main weapon swap between two)

Glad you got something figured out

FWIW, next time, try asking for help from the standpoint of “I’m struggling with this content, can anyone suggest something that will help me?” Threads with titles like this one appear to be asking for a nerf, and will not attract many helpful people ;-)

Oh, and one more bit of info on thief — don’t be afraid to go ranged if you need to, especially when solo. Sometimes you just need to back off and throw some Cluster Bombs around while you wait for healing / cooldowns. Sword / Pistol + Shortbow are a great combination for soloing content, mainly due to Pistol Whip (see earlier post, s/p #3), Black Powder (pistol #5), and short bow for when there’s too much pressure to melee.

Not to mention that Short Bow #5 is probably one of the most fun mobility skills in the game

Other than that, good thief defenses also include Smoke Screen / Dagger Storm if there’s anything around with projectiles (SS absorbs them, DS reflects them), and Shadow Refuge is good to have for when things get really bad.

Have fun!

I just realized several responses seem to think I was on a thief when did this instance. Sorry if something got confused down the line but in my original post I stated I was on my Guardian. I use shout healing as well.

It really depresses me how people expect games to cater to bad/lazy players these days. In the past that was never the case. You either kept trying and learnt to overcome the challenge or you stopped.

Sorry, I actually really like the support I’m getting from many in this thread and am also surprised and grateful. This isn’t WoW. You don’t get to be in the “best of the best” guild and try to “look down” upon others as if you were some kind of Elitist Jerk.

So you’re better at it than others, so fricken what! Stop being a “holier than thou” and follow the lead of your fellow players and offer to help others.

Nice of you to twist what i said as a personal attack. I have no problem with less skilled players asking for help and i understand not everyone is naturally talented at games. But many players have what i think is unjust entitlement for easy content as a result of the shift in game difficulty over the years. Which is what i was pointing out.

Saying “Bad/Lazy” is actually a personal attack. Insulting someone because you disagree with them/their opinion isn’t the route to go. I never said I needed “unjust entitlement”. I was merely stating that I felt that instance was unjustifiably hard- and based on a lot of replies, I’m not the only one who feels that way.

Utilized every skill on CD and died three times.

The NPCS are USELESS! They stand around and frickin gab instead of attacking and when they do attack… WEAK WEAK WEAK.

What was the point of this? Why was it made to be so hard as a solo instance? I can only dodge so much and I can only use so many abilities.

Oh and sure, I can go ranged… and do as much dmg as the useless NPCs with me.

Disappointed in Achievement Chest

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

For crying out loud.

When the game launched there were no achievement chests, no one complained.
Then they add chests and people complain it’s not good enough.

You people are never satisfied.

- When you add reward to something, you change the motivation for doing the thing. If you’re doing it for the sake of having high achivement point count it’s different motivation than doing it for the reward chest.

Instead of large rewards every 5k and mediocre rewards in between, I feel the rewards should have just gradually been better and better the more points you earn. It certainly drive me to do more stuff to get to the better rewards. I would also play even LONGER if it were PER CHARACTER rather than per account. But that’s just me.

Increasing the level cap is a deal-breaker for me.

I’ve always said- releasing GW2 with level cap already 80 was not a smart move. They could have really extended gameplay (and lessened A LOT of QQ) had they released it with level cap at say 60. Then gradually release zones/content for level 70 and then to level 80, and then the Living Story.

I may be wrong but even though they spent SEVERAL years on making GW2 (base before Living Story), it seems now that they just make things “on the fly”. But that’s just me.

Game Sound Bug - Randomly Turns Off

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Allelya.6830

Allelya.6830

During combat when using abilities, my game sound turns off. I have not figured out what key combination is causing it. It’s been fairly random so far.

To turn the sound back on, I have to go into Options > Sound Options > and then re-select my current Audio Device (my headset).

As others have tried to suggest, I am not alt-tabbing and the box to make that happen is not checked.

UPDATE: I play a Guardian and I have now found that my sound is muted ingame when I hit F2 but is not immediately brought back when hitting F2 again. It also appears to be affecting other program sounds such as Skype (Skype hotkey not active to mute sound, just checked)

If anyone could provide some help, would be greatly appreciated.

Im about to hit level 30. Out of every heart I’ve completed in 3 different zones, only about 5% of them had SOMETHING with stats I could use that was an upgrade. Everything else wasn’t worth the karma. Really disappointing to finish hearts, head to the vendor only to find useless gear for sale 90% of the time.

Block, report, don’t respond (as responding can draw you into a fight and get you in trouble also). The first suspension seems to be 72 hours, judging by the outraged posts from people who were suspended for abusive language and who were outraged to be so cruelly mistreated.

I did respond because I don’t take things “lying down”. Too many other players began to support to main offenders and it makes me angry that more players kittenpect rules and terms of service aren’t more actively speaking up to drown out the jerks. I honestly feel that my ONE report would have done little to nothing had I not brought attention to the violators and their actions. A couple of other players did understand and said they were reporting as well.

Edit: Why on earth did the filter remove part of a standard English word that’s not offensive in any way? lol

How Does Reporting Work?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Allelya.6830

Allelya.6830

Just came back to the game after playing others and decided to begin a new character. While trying to do an event in the level 1-5 area, an 80 comes along and wipes out most every mob before us lowbies had a chance to tag any. I voiced my opinion about this in map chat, that 80s might think they’re helping but they’re not. That they’re killing things too fast for us.

I was IMMEDIATELY called the B-word AND the C-word and told to “grow a thick skin”, and then was told that I ‘asked’ for the abuse because I called out the level 80 players.

I reported and blocked every player that said those things to me, so I was wondering if there was an active suspension policy in place for this kind of verbal abuse and if so, can I read it somewhere?

New player - How do I make this "fun"?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Allelya.6830

Allelya.6830

I bought this game almost a month back now and I’ve barely played it. Couple hours spent on it, thats all. I was looking for an MMORPG because I’ve enjoyed them in the past. Played Runescape for years. Played SWTOR for a month and only stopped because I didn’t have much time on my hands. I enjoyed Runescape a LONG time ago, and SWTOR recently.

Did some research on MMOs, found this, saw great reviews, how its the MMO that breaks the norm of grinding, saw an awesome review by Angry Joe. In particular, he mentioned he couldn’t get into SWTOR despite the awesome concept because of the lack of interesting game play. He struck me as someone who was looking for an MMO experience that actually had a soul to it.

So I spend 35$ on this, start playing, and what do I get? Maybe a few minutes of interesting story and then hours of follow the arrow, kill stuff for WAY longer than should be necessary, level up, move on. Seriously? This is exactly what I was told this game DOESN’T have. Why do I have to spend 15 minutes dancing for cows and killing worms by spamming a key to fill up a bar?

Honestly this is the reason I hate spending money on games these days.

The only reason I’m still trying is because I feel guilty for spending money on this.

So please help me find ways to make this experience more “fun”, since the game refuses to do that for me. I discovered the random events already. Besides that so far I’m just following arrows and doing side quests that involve killing 20 of something. Does this end? When does this end? Is there any other alternative to progressing in the game and hopefully getting somewhere better? What else can I do except be the NPC’s kitten?

HONESTLY despite being a WoW clone I found SWTOR a lot more fun.

This is a completionists game. Clear all the zones, get all the achieves, do all the events, collect all the skins. That’s it. That is all there is to do in this game.
There’s no “progression”. The living story is a joke- the new zones are dreadful and boring. I stop in the forums once about every 3 months and the fanboys are still here while those of us who wised up are off playing something else.

P.S. The most they add to this game is in the Gem store. No content.

Too few players wanting difficult content?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Allelya.6830

Allelya.6830

1. I’m not a fan of “hard” content. I like challenge, but not challenge that assumes that a large number of players will never be able to do it. Challenge should be enough that you have to pay attention, learn certain patterns, and get things right most of the time, but should not require perfection.

2. Having an event in which you need to get something right 12 times in a row, and failing it even once can kill you, is not “hard,” it’s just tedious if your succeed and frustrating if you fail. The best content follows the rule of three, do one activity successfully, then have to do it a second time with slightly more complications, and then do it a third time with even more complications. All three rounds should be forgiving of minor stumbles, and you should never have to repeat the same sequence more than three times in an event (I’m talking broad objectives, I’m not saying each boss should die in three hits).

3. DPS checks are not hard. If content can be done easily when everyone is in full Ascended Zerk, but not when everyone is in full tank greens, then that is not hard content, it’s just gear-check, and nobody should be proud at succeeding in it. You didn’t do well, your shorts did well. Content should scale to the stats of the group, with better stats allowing you to win it faster, but not being necessary to overall success.

4. If content requires large masses of people to succeed, but having a minority of the players fail can cause the entire thing to fail, that is not hard content, it is just frustrating content. If at least half the people know what they’re doing, an event should succeed, the more people that know what they’re doing, the faster it succeeds. In large group events, difficulty should be measured on a personal level, on whether you can survive the action, not on the average skill level of the entire group.

5. Hard content is not “superior” content, it’s just content some people like more. If you are the type that enjoys “hard” content, that does not make you better than those that prefer casual, and you do not deserve better rewards just because you enjoy “hard” content. Anything achievable via “hard” content should be equally as achievable using “casual” content, it just might come to you faster, for example if a “hard” event takes more time and has a greater chance of complete failure, it might reward twice as many tokens towards a cool reward, allowing you to acquire it faster, but there should not be rewards that can ONLY be gained through hard content.

6. If you have to bribe people to do “hard” content with cool rewards, then people don’t want to do “hard” content, they just want cool rewards. If this is the case, then you just shouldn’t have “hard” content because that’s clearly not what the players want. You should reward players adequately for the time spent, they should never say “I would do that but I’d make half as much as if I did this other thing,” but so long as they are adequately rewarded, if they still don’t want to do it, then they don’t want to do it, make it more FUN, not more rewarding.

7. As for breaking up the zerg, this is not hard to do, so long as you force it to happen. So long as everyone can move in a pack, they will move in a pack, because it’s the path of least resistance. The only way to avoid it is to make events in which you MUST engage multiple spread out targets at once, in which even 150 people on one only is impossible to win with, and you also need to convey this information clearly to the players. If they have to bang their heads against the wall or visit an outside blog to figure this out then you’ve failed, the event trackers need to make clear that some people need to go left and some right, and how many are needed at each, so that a totally new player who doesn’t know the event can figure out at a glance where he will be most useful. You have to balance out rewards and difficulty between events, otherwise people will just overload the easiest/more rewarding path.

I upvote this… x1000. Well said.

Fun in dungeons

I have almost no fun in dungeons. Most mechanics are 99% unforgiving. Every 80s group prefers to “run past” more than half the mobs in the dungeon so if you are one of the unlucky ones getting hit by the group they ran past, you are slowed immediately (because ANet reasons) and sometimes rooted/knocked down/stunned in some way then dead because your group mates are already far ahead.

I like Crowd Control abilities- we have NONE. It’s dodge or zerg. Not fun.

No one does them… why? They’re tough and it helps to have at least 2 more helping. So why is no one interested in them?

I don’t want end-game anymore, I want more stuff. Two years and now we have dry, tasteless Living Story about two lesbians worrying more about each other than about Tyria.

…not only does that sound INCREDIBLY bigoted, but I don’t even know what the hell you’re talking about. Are you even PLAYING the living story?

Also, I’m not the OP. My post was in reply to the ORIGINAL poster, who has since deleted his comment. So… yeah. Go ahead and step right in here, late to the discussion, and make assumptions about everything you missed over the last week.

The discussion has moved on FAR past these first comments. Either catch up to what is being discussed now, or just leave the old stuff drop. This comment is no longer relevant.

Yes. you got me. Im bigoted. My brother, who I am very close to, is gay. His very best friend who is like a member of our family is also… gay. I have a couple of gamer friends I hang out with regularly that are…. gay/lesbian. I’m TOTALLY a bigot.

Im not going to go back to the start of Dry Top and count the numerous times Marjorie and what’s-her-face go on about EACH OTHER and not about the current events. I’m not the only one who was sick of seeing it. EVEN IF it were a man and woman couple, I’d say the same thing. I don’t want their love life thrown in my face at every turn instead of progressing the story.

Recount would be great

Recount, though not without benefits, ultimately leads to elitism. As someone mentioned above, people will soon create metas on how much dps each class needs to do to be seen as “good”. What you must understand in this is that GW2 is not like WoW wherein each player is given specific roles: there are no dedicated healers or tanks, which means everyone would be subjected to damage output. This would deter people from ever trying out anything besides trying to dish out the most amount of damage, unless it’s maybe in an organized dungeon run.

Having even your own data shown only to you with no means to link it still creates prejudice. If you see yourself doing more than 30-40% of the damage for example, you’d assume that with 5 players including yourself, there was at least one person who didn’t quite do as much damage as the norm (20% equally amongst 5 players), or worse that the other 4 did equally poorly.

In that scenario, you would either be very proud of yourself that you are able to do so much more damage than them and look down on them, or just grow to distrust them and maybe add them to your block list to make sure you don’t party with them next time. Either way, it does not promote cooperation.

That is why I don’t believe that adding such a tool will have more benefits than drawbacks.

The biggest thing other than elitism that always angered me about those counters is the fact that individual mechanics are never taken into account. “Stopped DPS for x amount of time because of Y mechanic” = OMG YOU DID LOW DPS YOU SUCK

Level 6 dye reward

Worth 30 plus silver for a level 6 reward?

That’s one perspective, I can understand that. As a casual who likes to play “dress up” I was looking at it from a different perspective.
