There is absolutely no reason to run anything but full zerker. The only thing that is bad is meeting 4-5 teragriffs at the camps and get perma knocked down until dead or the rather annoying veteran teragriff. You can do it, just have to be carefull. Everything else will melt, it is especially effective at groups of mob and you clear a caravan attack in a single necro bomb using wells.

The toughest and least effort build is probably MM power. Its just facetank. Well, when the minions dont go full kitten and 3 out of 5 just stand there watching while you are fighting.

The trait system… was great, it’s now terrible, Traits are unlocked WAY to late. Honestly the gold sink or do certain tasks I don’t mind as much, but the level gate on each trait tier is just silly.

What, I thought it was normal to reach level 80 and only have 2 tier 1 traits -_-

I wasnt around when the NPE hit, but it didnt take long to realize it was utterly kittened. How Anet could get it from design, coding to implementation without anyone seeing the flaws is a mystery that boggles the mind. The extremely harsh trait, skill and gameplay limitations which makes the game completely unfun at all levels below 80 or the story missions which someone has arbitrarily flipped around to make no sense whatsoever, how was this even imagined?

The time and effort it must have taken is… well for lack of better words, horrifying.

And during all this no one at Anet has apparently been able to fix the visual glitch of the Claw Island story mission that consist of setting the Z axis of the leaving ship in the ending cinematics to +4 meters or so, something that’s glitched since the beta.

The Naga is a good mouse, but I find it has too many buttons. The thumb just isnt comfortable. I am currently using a Deathadder and there of course is another problem – too few buttons, lol. I wish I had a couple more… and a pinkie rest.

If you got a smaller hand, look at the Logitech eqvivalents. Personally I have grown out of them (only worn down some 6ish MX5xx series in my youth).

There is no way it would take you “months” to run though an openworld version of this game.

the WoW main landmass is something in the line of 60-80 square miles if I recall correctly… Daggerfall is somewhere around 60 thousand square miles. And it still only take like a week realtime to walk through.

This has to do with how computers store data.

Not really. It has to do with basic math. As a simple case:

Imagine if you have 3×3 pixel grid and make a “round” map that fill the space inside it – a cross due to the obvious lack of resolution. Well you still have a max X and max Y of 3 (lets ignore 0) which means you need a 3×3 array no matter the content or you wouldnt know where to put the pixels. Hence, you get a square with 44% of the space wasted.

This stronghold public access is a travesty.

Since the original Devs came from WoW and were familiar with that game’s seamless maps then I’m going to assume there was a particular reason why they didn’t put it into this game, as nice as that would be.

Perhaps someone with computer knowledge can say what the disadvantages of a seamless world are to the game’s engine.

I think the reason is simple – they had a working engine in GW1 which rely on instancing (ie restricted and focused maps) and they just went with a that design instead of rebuilding it from the ground. You dont just “put” something like a seamless map into a game. Its a core part of its server architecture, how transitions are handled.

But I dont know what Anet was really thinking. I am hoping it was “we just want to make a great game!” but it may have been “a new engine is going to cost us what?!?!?” :P

As coglin said, the dev said he had reduced the cap limit, and upped it up to 10% of what it was before he changed anything.

I seriously doubt that, it still seems a fair bit lower than it used to be. Or they did it on the US servers but forgot about EU. But I dont know, I dont think Anet will ever tell us the real numbers.

Yesterday our guild was able to bring 12 people on a border with just as many in queue. Two more guilds had about 20ish each and another one the same size – which replaced a guild that gave up trying to gather due to queue. There where no pug zerg, just a few random roamers. There wouldnt have been space for any either. The queue didnt move much for about 1.5 hours (bursts coming when guilds gave up trying to get people in). What we faced was a guild blob of around 40 people, with maybe 20ish randoms and a smaller guild with 8 or so peeps. The third server had two guild groups with maybe 20-30 each plus randoms.

It was just dull, didnt see much action until most of us managed to gather east of garrison.

This always bothered me about GW2. They made all the zones instanced and artificially connected them. Imagine if it was more natural and seamless without any zoning.

Yeah, i know GW1 had portals, but that’s hardly an excuse to make a world non-seamless.

WoW kinda spoils a guy that way, does it not? :\

Even FF14 doesn’t feel nearly as ‘boxy’ since the transition points feel more natural than hiding some portal into a cubbyhole of a zone. Half the time, I can’t spot the map transitions, which should definitely be more clearly marked.

This is the thing that bothers me most about this game, people pointed it out (some even refused to play) because it was so obvious. I think the OP has a point, this is a very rookie effort at an open world. WOW has it done right, even though they did have to give in to the occasional portal/invisible wall. The world in WOW is much more natural looking and feels natural in its play, and it’s a 10 year old game.

I’d like to see some effort at this, even if it’s a transition scene as we port. Cant we take a cable car like a ski lift into a new area or something?

You could walk from area to area. Without load times (as in zero, null, nada, you wont notice it). A seamless world the size of entire Tyria. No invisible walls, no zone borders, just pure terrain. Not even cities would have loading areas. Its just a single world.

But it would require a game engine other than the one currently in GW2. Archeage for example is built with the CryEngine and does exactly what I described (with full water vehicle physics to boot, imagine a GvG with two ship of the lines). Newer games no doubt make it even better.

So the answer is yes. We can. We can do better than a “ski lift” into a new area. Dont know what answer you expected?

playing GW2 just cuz it's not subscription?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dawdler.8521

If you use the Gem Store on a regular basis, you might as well be willing to pay a subscription and have everything available in-game. Minimum gem purchase is $10 US, if I am not mistaken. FFXI is 12.99 per month, FFXIV is 14.99 per month, don’t know what the sub on WoW or other sub based mmo’s are. But I know people in F2P games who say the same thing, they will quit the game if it becomes subscription, yet they fork over dollars after dollars… sometime $100 or more per month using cash shops.

I don’t know about you guys, but that don’t make any sense to me. :-/

Its simple psychology.

We are willing to pay for stuff that we want in a simple manner – pay X to get A. When you want it, you buy it. But we dont want to be forced to pay for something where we cant define the “value”. Some people play 1 hour a week, some people play 100 hours. Yet with subscription you pay the same amount.

A subscription is also about commiting to the game. Again, forcing you to play it. But developers/publishers often arent so friendly to their consumers. What if the game shut down after 6 months? No one want to commit themselves to that kind of risk. Unlike the early days of MMO games, we now have more experience, sort of speak. We dont trust them so blindly anymore. Word spread fast on the internet. Subscription in itself is also something forced upon you if you want to return to the game, even if its just to check it out for a day. That reduces the will to commit – you start looking into the future instead of focusing on the now.

How people react to this is totally up to them because as I said, its psychology. Its in your mind. Most of us could easily afford the subscription. People always go “omg you poor its only $10 a month, you so cheap”. Its never about that when you look at an individual game.

Anet has made willing customers out of us all and that’s why we love em.

EDIT: Correct me if wrong, but Guild Wars 2’s World Map size is WAY bigger than 1024 × 1024 or even 1920 × 1080 because the attached image I posted was a screenshot taken from a zoomed point of view.

Lolwat? 1920×1080 is a monitor resolution, not a terrain map. Game maps are most of the time made up of a square array of vertices. 1024×1024 would be a 1 million polygon terrain map. The distance between the points is the actual terrain resolution. You cant drop resolution too much or you could end up with a gigantic 100×100 mile map where each terrain polygon is the size of a GW2 map (with a regular 512×512 texture lol). It’d look horrible. But the mapsize would be fantastic.

Point is, GW2 obviously have a limited size. Maybe its a hard cap, maybe its a soft cap. Who knows. We need much larger maps if you want to make something like an island the size of entire Tyria. Its perfectly possible today from a technical standpoint in other engines but the final map would still be square. It’d just have tons of water on it so it wouldnt show.

breaking news: every map/zone/world in every 3d video game ever created is defined by a rectangular volume.

every.single.one.

some hide it by using decor to cut the space into a smaller, less even shape, others do it with invisible walls.. but they are all “square”.

Hmmm .. not that i really have a problem with th squares .. but this looks different.

On the other hand RIFT also had a “seamless” world, and not closed zones like we
have in GW2.

That image is still square.

Its simple. If GW2 max size is 1024×1024 and this is still small relatively speaking, you want to use most of the space, resulting in a squareish map. If max size was 8192×8192 then they could make circular maps twice as large as now if they wanted. This is just random figures, but the comparison is the same.

Yep, simple as that. Technical limitation. Games with seamless worlds are just as square as GW2, except its a square the size of all GW2 zones combined.

my guild tried no gank in our 20 man last night and replaced with frontline. It made a big difference in fighting outnumbered. Our backline survived better too. Gank is good in a gvg setting. Open field not so much.

Well of course. Thats why a strong core is that can better match the enemy is needed. Assuming full parties, you would run 15 GWEN and 5 focus before, then you ran 20 GWEN and found it better outmanned. You could run 20 GWEN and 5 focus and be even stronger.

Its just a numbers game. if you can down more of them than your guild go down, you win. A tougher core goes down slower.

All games have sterotypical races.

This game only has 2 unique races, charr and sylvari. The rest are copy paste.

You can’t be 100% original all of the time, and it’s the stereotypes that drag people into the game.

They are unique? Last time I checked, almost all MMOs had the mandatory “beast” race and nature loving Elves. The flip the philosophies and overall technology design around, but its still pretty much the same. Hell, the Sylvari even where Wood Elves originally. If Charr and Sylvari are unique in GW2, then Norn, Asura and Humans are exactly as unique.

I wish Anet would have implemented an official version of the “alternate” control scheme:

Moving your mouse moves the camera, targetting AoE acts as if the mouse is always in the dead center (ie up/down increase/reduce distance) and left mouse button is key 1. A small crosshair was available to use so you always knew where the center was and where you aimed your ground targetting skills.

It was quite awesome to play with, but it was a third party script so Anet didnt like it any more than they like the mere mentioning of rebinding left mouse key to keyboard button x in order to save thousands of clicks on pointless tasks.

Just cause you can command or participate in WvW it doesn’t mean you isntantly belong to the meta. The meta is what is best and engineer isn’t in there for WvW. That doesn’t mean you can’t make such profession work, but it’s just not as good as the profession you would replace.

The meta is what is perceived to be best. Every time I hear someone preach GWEN I shudder hoping they aren’t on my server. GWEN is optimal most of the time but there are some builds and strategies that break the meta.

That… is a contradiction. You cannot counter every possible scenario anymore than you can do open field 20v80 and expect to survive. GWEN however is optimal most of the time as you say, hence its the best composition. Strategy can break any group so that isnt really a consideration.

Same reason the thief is considered the best roamer, except he pops like a balloon if he meets someone built to counter it. It doesnt change the fact he is still the best roamer.

How is strategy not a consideration? To run your GWEN you use certain strategies yes? Create a party with 2 engi, 1 ele and a thief. Follow the zerg but split off when the zergs hit heads. Use the terrain and where your tag is at to unload your aoe while the thief keeps stragglers away from you. As long as you don’t get caught in bad positioning with no way out you just bombed the enemy zerg with stupid amounts of damage while able to maintain pretty much any field you want.

This is what I meant by what is perceived to be best. I’m one of the guys who doesn’t understand why I rarely see a ranged and a melee tag in the same zerg. I don’t understand why more players don’t party up to split off from the main zerg staying with it and damaging the enemy zerg while being self sufficient.

Wat?

You just described a ranged party in a GWEN setup except you use a weaker class combo. Replace the 2 engies and thief with 3 necros and you got far more devastating bombing potential.

GWEN is not mindless zerging. Its melee parties (GWN), ranged parties (EN) and focus parties (thieves, mesmers, rangers, whatevs) working together. Having the ranged party tag up is common so you know where where the primary backline is (or focus party).

Skill 2: Nerfed to the ground mess that barely work vs one of the best ranged bursts in the game.
Skill 3: Buggy broken mess that doesnt work vs dumbfire AoE cripple which also have high damage.

Of course this would help reduce the stress overall on the skill queue, but it wont solve anything I’m afraid.

When the skill lag really hits, its pretty much across the entire map. You can feel zerg battles even if you’re not doing anything. I was a necro running axe/warhorn the other day, solo capping a ruin (no one in sight) and warhorn 5 just refused to work properly. Push 5, skill blink for a second and nothing happen. Push 5 again, skill blink for a second and nothing happen. Push 5 again, skill blink for a second and nothing happen. Push 5 again… skill goes off. I tested the other weapon skills and they reacted fine. Then of course tried warhorn after cd again and… Push 5, skill blink for a second and nothing happen. Repeat 3 times and it finally goes off.

I am guessing that the other skills “worked” because nothing was being done with them, the animation played and no effects was applied (none on me, none on enemy) while warhorn 5 tried to apply swiftness buff and failed to get a response from the server. There was no discernable lag moving around at the time.

If you want simplicity, look at something like Newegg (hey its the only US store I know lol) and the maybe $500-600 “ready made” machines. Basicly you only look at the core part – a good i5 or i7. Most of them come with enough ram, probably good enough PSU and stuff like that. But make sure its without a graphics card!. Buy that yourself separately. Most ready made machines have kitten cards thrown in. Like, there is a $980ish or something machine there which sound good, even with a GTX970… and when you look at it closer its the low profile card. What?! Why?!?! Its a freaking full ATX tower and they picked that, sigh. The harddrive they come with is also irrelevant – buy a 256gb SSD and use as main OS and prefered game drive. Use a larger platter disc if you want more space cheaply. Or do it like me, dont tolerate them anymore and get more SSDs lol.

If you want a good modern machine built in a decent mATX case you have to build it yourself though. All the ready made PCs are built with ATX fulltower flashiness in mind (I saw a “military” camouflaged machine in there, uuuuuuugh). But it’ll probably reach $1500 or higher.

ESO is a fun game for a while if one look at it as a mediocre addition to the Elder Scrolls series with some degree of online play. That’s it. If you want to go deeper into the lore and get maybe a month of gameplay out of it, go for it. For an MMO, its actually not that bad open world PvE wise. The storyline is dull but so is every ES game, lol. The quests themselves can actually be quite involving but only one time. That’s pretty much it IMO. It does little new, other than trying to expand the size of WvW. Its boring as hell but sure, it does it. Theoretically its superior there. Practically, not so much.

ESO is one of those games where I wish they’d just blatantly stolen stuff from other games that came before it, such as GW2. Just dynamic events and downleveling could have made the whole ESO world come alive. The design is just so, so bad. When I look at ESO, its almost like they didnt want it as a sandbox world you could live out your Elder Scrolls fantasy in. They just wanted a quick WoW clone with mouse control. So they just slapped it together on the SWTOR engine. Uuuuuuugh… That is why ESO will never be the game that I want.

necro noob question

in PvP

Necro is underpowered in mobility and defense skills for team pvp. ( need a babysitter for high tier gaming ) can’t run away with 1000 health like another professions and come back after 5 seconds with full health, can’t stealth, don’t have shield, no access to good stability, no access to good teleport, slow as hell, pvp start with 0 Life Force. etc.

Run away… Pff why would you want to? Its only underpowered if you’re doing the wrong things.

You only need warhorn 5 to have swiftness to the central point, win the initial battle with the help of your team (that’s the only tricky part and prone to failure) and then stand on it until the end of the round. Any class will find it nearly impossible to dislodge something like a MM necro bunker from a point. Its almost as bad as a turret engineer.

Or alternativly you go full zerk and melt anything in front of you (+1 on 3 peeps is sweet).

The only time I see bad necros is when people seem to try hybrid builds that are aimed at “surviving”. Because as you say, the necro is pretty mediocre at this type of balancing act.

Why does the engineer not fit meta?

One thing I do notice, is that it seems like an odd argument to me, BlackDevil, to suggest warrior does X better, ele does Y better, and guardian does Z better. If engineer can do good at all of it, does it matter if 3 professions combined can do it “better”?

Well… yes?

GWEN is built to overwhelm the enemy with two specific formats – GW tank, EN bomb.

Look at it this way: Assume a quick battle. If two engineers have 20hp/20dps, they wont win against 1 guardian with 40hp/10dps and 1 necro with 10hp/40dps. In the scenario that the GN attack first, both engineers die because 50dps win over 40hp. In the scenario that the EE attack first, the guardian hopefully absorb all the damage even if he dies, making the necro kill both engineers.

That is not how it works in practice of course, but that’s the overall theory of GWEN and why doing “good” isnt enough.

As always, it would be interesting to see a 20 man GvG of GWEN versus Engineers with 2 perfectly equal skilled guilds (or any other profession, GWEN vs Mesmers could be hilarious), but that doesnt really happen I’m afraid. All profession raids has been done, but not under controlled forms.

Why does the engineer not fit meta?

Ignoring the melee, its quite simple. It doesnt have the specific utility of ele and it not even close to the instant AoE bomb of the necro. The engineer cannot replace any of these classes. If we look the toward the focus parties, its not as good as thieves, ranger or mesmers vs single targets. The engineer is flexible and I like it for random roaming, but it doesnt quite excel at anything required of the meta.

Well, except i the first hour of a 40 man engineer raid dropping supplies as one and instakilling same size guild raids (pre stab nerf) :p

After that they learned

T3 want to fight, get new guilds, get new bandwagoners, start winning i WvW.
T3 rise to T2, everyone go “omg they want to win?!” and get even more bandwagoners.
T3 become T1 and the circle of life begins again.

Condition Duration Food

There is no issue with food in WvW!

Yes there is. The -40%/+40% condi food has always been over the top, restricting choices of other foods. You will always feel the need to balance it out, pushing it into the meta. Personally I think that the max should have been much more conservative. Look at runes. They dont reach anywhere near that number. Most having generic +condition only reach something like 15%, with specific conditions going higher at 25% tops. Same with -condition. Its nowhere near 40%! Why should food be that powerfull compared to runes?

But there is hardly any point in trying to argue with Anet (or anyoone else for that matter) about it now. They’re not going to “fix” the food. Best thing to hope for is always that they dont break WvW.

Wow seriously?

See I’m all for April’s Fools pranks (if done right, that is), and while some people certainly overreact, it’s still hell of a dumb thing they pulled there. I do not consider it ‘fun’, at least not after the first minute. From there onwards it is annoying (highly annoying), and that’s about it. It has no place in WvW, and even in PvE there should at least be a way to get rid off it entirely after that first minute of fun when heading into the potential hours of annoyance.

I appreciate they put some effort into it, but I guess we should also tell them if the result of their work sucks, no?

Put some effort into making it, true… Then put zero effort into actually testing it.

Anyone in their right mind would instantly see that the effect should have limited to certain areas, such as the city zones or something. That would have been enough to avoid this whole debacle. It should never have been a game wide thing. Even with the way they did it, it doesnt make sense that PvP was excluded, but WvW was not.

Another thing that just shows Anet doesnt care one bit about WvW. They dont consider it PvP, its that bad. To them its just PvE?

This is also ignoring the fact that the only game mode that the “prank” really break is WvW.

Disabling dialog sounds doesnt change the fact that all sounds are going through that “nostalgia” filter. Like sitting inside a metal barrel. Its horrid. If you cant hear it, you cant have good enough headphones.
