Most definitely the dredge. All the mercenary groups are pretty much exactly the same with the exception of the freaking dredge.

Why? They’re a pain in the kitten if you’re a roamer or a small group player. The dredge cannons they get are the most annoying thing ever. They constantly daze you from a range for other zergs to eat you up. Also, its harder to destroy the cannons if you’re condition damage.

As a wvw roamer p/d condition thief, guys please please stick to your crappy glass cannon d/d and d/p builds.

That being said, p/d condition thief is extremely powerful if the enemy has little to no condition cure. I rarely lose lose in a 1v2 let alone in a 1v1. Glass cannons in general will melt from the bleeds. I get a lot of mobility and evades as well. Being a ranged condition applier it gives you so many option for kiting. Going against melee players is a breeze really.

However it ‘s completely different story in sPVP where people will be going full bunker with condi cure in order to play king of the hill. Anyways, the only classes I had problems with are pure phantasm evade/defensive builds from mesmers, d/d ele with massive condi cure and healing, hybrid berserker and knight’s healing build from guardian, and pure confusion and evade build from mesmers. It’s usually a stalemate/draw with the first two builds. The confusion builds for mesmers were unfortunately nerfed to oblivion.

the problem is that you are arguing against a class specific skill. Every class should do CC different

This pull makes a mesmer unique in comparison to other classes pull.

oh I agree skills should be unique and powerful in their own way. What I’m saying though is that itV is just a bit too powerful because along with it’s range and unique abilities, it has that near instant cast time with no real tell. A small nerf like the one I mention in the original post would make it balanced.

Funny how your only counter-arguements mention a whole other thief mechanic instead of actually comparing the CC Skill with another CC skill. What if I mained ranger or any other class? Boom. All your bad arguments wouldn’t have any significance, they really don’t in the first place anyways. itV is overpowered whether you’re playing thief, ranger warrior or whatever. Yall need to stay on topic, we are supposed to be talking about general CC and whether itV is overpowered compared to other skills.

Also, throw mine isn’t on the same level as itV. itV can be placed on walls to pull people. At long ranges, throw mine has a clear animation as you can see the hand motion and the mine coming towards you. Compare that with itV where as soon as you see the hand motion and curtain appear you can be pulled.

Phoenixfudge.5290

Okay Jackums, you argue that itV and CC’s in general are supposed to be hard to avoid and not easily noticeable. We are back to square one, I think itV is overpowered in that it has nearly zero tell to react to and because it’s a long ranged aoe curtain. If you think that isn’t OP compared to the other short ranged often single-target CC other professions get, that’s fine. The itV CC isn’t just a “simple pull with no damage”. CC has potential to unleash burst or stack more CC.

As for thief burst, you should be aware they can’t do the full burst while in stealth. Thief needs to be out of stealth in order to do the full “insta-gib” combo with Basilik Venom, Steal-Mug, Cloak and Dagger, Backstab. If they were in stealth then they could only use Backstab, that is, if they manage to catch up to you or you’re standing still. In general, you should be aware or your surroundings. You mention WvW so I assume you are usually aware of potential enemies. If you see a thief unstealth near you then you should be dodging. These insta gank combos and build are really only good against glass cannons anyways. It’s never been a huge problem for me on my tank beastmaster ranger to which I can easily shut down these thieves.

@Escthiil
I already told everyone why itV is too much of a powerful CC compared to any other CC and why I think it needs a specific nerf. Seems you haven’t been reading my replies or even original post. and really people stop comparing to thieves whole mechanic, it’s not the same I’m trying discuss whether itV is too overpowered compared with any other CC and why it should be balanced.

Phoenix, you don’t realize that other professions can do exactly the same. See the skills that posted Aneirin Cadwall.

You’re just telling to nerf one skill when you want to nerf a mechanic of the game that a lot of skills benefits from it, seems not fair to me.

Moreover, you’re telling to add a 1s cast to into the void, so by the same way, all secondary effect that hasn’t cast time should also have. That would also affect spirits from ranger, for example…

Refer to original post and previous replies. No other skills do the exact same. itV is unique.

That being said, I don’t understand how you are saying I want to “nerf a whole mechanic” because I’m not.

@ Jackums

I already know what specific situations to anticipate an itV. Outside of these situations, one cannot anticipate itV. A mesmer carrying a focus is not a good indication of when he will use the curtain but that he has the ability to.

I’ve already established that the animation and activation is way too quick for anyone to noticeably see and react too. I don’t know why people keep trying to argue that there is a good tell for itV, there isn’t. As soon as the curtain is visible a mesmer can activate itV. Both setting the curtain and activating itV takes less than a second I don’t see the posting of the video as counter productive it supports my arguement. You can see the golem get pulled as soon as the curtain appears. The same happened to me in the second video. Less than a second.

As for thieves stealthing out of combat before you can see them, that’s a another story.

The tell for a curtain pull is when you cast shadow refuge or anything that can be countered with a pull to interrupt its usage.

And what if you’re not using Shadow Refuge? I already expect it to be used when I use SR and proceed to use any dodges available. Your comparison with Into the Void and Shadow Refuge is not the same as expecting when a thief goes for a Backstab. Mesmer can still use Into the Void anytime immediately Shadow Refuge or not.Your argument doesn’t convince me why Into the Void shouldn’t have a 1 second delay.

Phoenixfudge.5290

Where’s our “indication” of an incoming Backstab or Steal? Where’s the delay on a 10k+ burst combo that comes out of nowhere? It’s almost as if you’re a hypocrite.

Basically just cry more.

The indication or “tell” of when an incoming Backstab is coming is after the thief goes into stealth. It’s quite simple. Usually a thief has 3-4 seconds after activating stealth in order to land a back stab. Within that 3-4 seconds you should have known what distance at which the thief activated stealth and when he did and proceed to kite and dodge at the right time according to those parameters. Evading Backstabs isn’t as hard as most people think, you really have to play the class in order understand and counter it.

Regarding the, 10k burst which I’m assuming you are referring to as Basilisk Venom, Steal- Mug, Cloak and Dagger, Backstab. There isn’t too much indication for that. You just need to expect it happen sometime when you target a nearby thief and see it has the Basilik Venom buff on it’s bar and dodge or go into stealth. Also have your stun breaker or invulns ready. That’s how I counter it.

That being said, this is the reason why I want Temporal Curtain to be up for 1 second before Into the Void can be activated just as Stealth needs to be activated in order to use Backstab. When you compare the two, Into the Void can be activated immediately and ranged where as with Backstab, you need to activate stealth (which is the obvious indicator) and be within melee range. Here’s another related video.

Definitely agree that Temporal Curtain should be changed so that it stacks swiftness from other sources and that iWarden should be buffed in some way like having him actually move instead of stay in one place.

Still, for it’s power, Into the Void doesn’t have a sufficient tell. Thanks for the suggestions on telegraphing it’s use. I already expect it to be used in those situations, I still think it needs a real tell.

So a thief is mad because he gets pulled out of Shadow Refuge? Cry more. Your class is already too hard to kill and being able to control the fight with your stealth abilities, heal in stealth and able to get away and reset if things are not going your way.

And you are wrong about having to use the pull right away. You can drop the curtain and use the pull seconds later if you want. This allows the mesmer to either run through it or cast iWarden then use ‘into the void’ (while iwarden is being cast) to pull the target and have iWarden spawn on them while knocked down.

Oh my, such a feisty one. Let’s not forget the mesmer is pretty much the “duelist” class. I still think an equally skilled mesmer could easily take out an equally skilled thief in a 1v1 with boundaries. Also, when did I ever mention that Into the Void MUST be used after the curtain is set? I simply said that it can be used immediately after its set, which IMO makes it op.

1. The curtain does have a tell, the Mesmer moves/motions their right hand as if drawing a line in front of them.

You say that the hand motion upon casting Into the Void provides a good tell? Perhaps you are forgetting how fast Into the Void can really be activated. As soon as you see the curtain, you are pulled. No time to react. The pull happens during t he hand motion, not after.

3. Maybe if they gave backstab or pro teleport strike a ‘1 second before activation’ fix, since you know, they actually don’t have tells at all, I would listen to these concerns

I do plan on making cases for thief nerfs and balances. You’ll see soon.

How cute, look at all these mesmers’ jimmies I’ve rustled who are now saying I’m invalidated because I main thief. I bet you guys would be surprised that my first character I made and leveled to 80 was a mesmer. Despite all the nerfs, both thief and mesmer are still very powerful pvp classes. Don’t be sad at the request of a small balancing nerf.

I’ve already told you the reasoning behind the nerf for this CC skill instead of any other. I’ll be kind and repeat myself in detail.

First, Into the Void has an instant cast-time and can immediately be activated after setting down Temporal Curtain. It also happens to have a max range of 1500 range, 900 from setting the curtain and 600 from the radius in which Into the Void pulls. Instant casting with no tell? AOE pull with max range of 1500? That’s quite a powerful snare you got there. All I’m asking is a 1 second delay after the curtain is set before Into the Void can be activated so that there is some sort of tell.

and to my friend, Aneirin Cadwall. Do you see a common trait amongst the skills you listed? All those other CC skills you’ve listed have a short range. Most are in melee range. The ones that don’t will have a clear tell (such as the Throw Mine) . Also, you listed Tornado which is an elite, thanks for the laughs.

I smell a thief…

No but seriously.. there are more cc skills with more or less instant cast time. Why target this one?

Ranged curtain pull. This combo’d with instant cast time makes it too powerful IMO. 1 second before activation isn’t much of a nerf but it will balance the skill so that it will give a slight tell.

Phantasmal Berserker would be pretty OP if the mesmer didn’t have the animation of raising the greatsword in the air. Into the Void needs the same effect.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Into_the_Void

Skill 4 with off hand focus. Into the Void is a very powerful ranged pull. I don’t mind that.

What I do mind is that is can be activated immediately upon setting the curtain. Therefore, the skill has no tell and makes the pull unpredictable, there’s no telling when it will go off. As soon as you see the curtain, you have already been pulled. For such a powerful CC, there needs to be a balance.

In order to balance this, Temporal Curtain needs to be up for 1 second before Into the Void can be activated. To be more specific, this is not an added 1 second cast-time just a requirement that the curtain be up for 1 second before itV be cast.

That being said, Rangers trait line is garbage. Most of the Grandmaster tier traits aren’t even worth using. Compare to thief’s traits like Shadow Rejuvenation (heal 329 hp per stealth second) or executioner (20% more damage while enemy is at 50% hp or less).

There’s no need for anymore nerfs for other classes, we need buffs for the underpowered classes. Ranger really needs an overhaul with the traits. Also, pet speed should be 30% faster on default. The AI is somewhat unreliable too.

P/D Sigils and Runes?

Phoenixfudge.5290

Basically what the others have said for the runes/sigils

But for weapons, use giver’s weapons. 10% bleed duration as a stat for it, and almost nobody knows about it.

Problem with that is that with the setups mentioned you can already get 75% and only multiples of 25 will work for most bleeds. Aditionally Givers doesn’t add to Condition Damage AND wastes a second atribute line in precission, which is garbage for condition builds.

I see Giver more as a complementary for Berserkers/Valks using some non-damaging conditions to weaken and snare his target.

I use double Giver’s weapons and double sigils of agony. 40% bleed duration right there. The overall extra damage with bleed duration outweighs the extra damage you get with normal carrion (power and condi damage) weapons.

More traps?

in WvW

Posted by: Phoenixfudge.5290

Phoenixfudge.5290

Well, the reason why I made up those crazy trap ideas was because the only actual trap available (besides the supply trap of course) is targeted towards the Thief class. It’s a little unfair because the thief can’t do much without stealth, much of the damage thief does requires stealth and many traits of thief are also tied with stealth. In combat, 30 seconds without stealth is incredibly detrimental to a thief. Both offensive and defensive means of the thief are tied to stealth. Why punish the thief and not any other profession? I do realize Mesmer makes use of stealth too but the Mesmer can still do a lot of damage with its other mechanics liker shatter and phantasm.

Honestly though, I think it would be pretty cool if they made an “All in one” profession mechanic disruptor trap. This would actually be quite powerful and significant. You can balance it by requiring 30 supply and by making it so that it only affect people who actually walk over it unlike the supply trap that activates as an aoe. This type of trap would be used as a legitimate defense against a raiding zerg. Unlike the supply trap, it must take planning, good placement and coordination to make full use of this “all in one” profession mechanic disruptor trap. Since it’s obvious that it would be used at the entrance of a tower or keep, organized groups will use a feint in order to avoid the trap. Mindless zergs will kill themselves in the process.

muhuhahahahaa. How’s that for idea, devs?

I have gotten chased by a mob after being hit by anti stealth too but I can escape easily. However I am not your average d/d or d/p thief. I run condition p/d with heal skill Withdraw and Runes of Centaur. Also have sigil of energy on my shortbow. Whenever I feel like it I can simply switch over to SB, get a free dodge, and usually another with Withdraw (15 sec cd) which provides an awesome gap opener and in some cases a gap closer. 100% uptime on swiftness with Centaur runes and SB skill 5 gg. No zerg or mob catches up to me stealth or no stealth. The best mobility and speed burst in the game. When running away, I reset hp in front of people’s faces. Best solo roaming class ever! Some people make the mistake of chasing me and trailing away from their zerg, ha! Nine times out of ten they are dead in a 1v1. No zerg to rez you from down state now suckers.

Actually they never intended to remove CnD off walls whatsoever.

What they actually intend to do was remove the fact that you could (keyword) STACK stealth off a wall. What happened was that a thief could hit the wall with CnD consecutively to stack stealth whereas that wouldn’t normally work because of debuff.

They did remove the ability to STACK stealth off walls like they said.

However, any good thief who would infiltrate a freshly flipped tower wouldn’t even bother with CnD and walls. They would just dagger pistol perma stealth into a good hiding spot within the tower and will not be seen. I have been able to hide in towers this way. There are certain spots in certain towers that are great. Soloing the tower is another story. Unfortunately, in T1, people respond very quickly when they see swords over their tower.

Concerning lag.

in WvW

Posted by: Phoenixfudge.5290

Phoenixfudge.5290

Is Anet planning to do ANYTHING to address this lag? I need a straight answer right now.

WvW is literally the ONLY thing that keeps me playing this game. Not the gear grind for ascended, not that boring living story content, not dungeons, not the grind for cosmetic skins and not the crappy excuse for what they call Structured PVP. WvW IS THE ENDGAME. It’s the only thing that gives this game serious re-playability.

In the early days of GW2, skill lag in WvW was barely noticeable. I don’t know what happened but it’s gotten much worse now, especially in T1. This skill lag is extremely frustrating and absolutely gamebreaking. At this point, it’s simply unacceptable.

WvW brings so much joy to me in that I can choose to play individually, roam solo and stand against the zerg. It’s not like the gated content of FoTM or dungeons where you need 5 people in a group. In WvW, you can do what you want how you want it. When it comes to dealing with a zerg, there needs to be precise and quick action. The lag absolutely demolishes any effort pf this and the mob of people spamming autoattack will win every time. I’m very happy that Anet fixed culling as that was a major issue for many. The new ranking system is a nice edition with many flaws but that’s another story. Right now, they need to address the lag. I can’t continue playing a game that is broken like this.

Arenanet, are you planning to address the lag issue in World vs. World? Will you at least acknowledge it?

Regards. -Volke The Rogue.

EDIT: Patch notes 5/14

Does poison slow down the reviving speed?

Yes, poison does decrease rate of resurrection. Caltrops helps too. As a thief, whenever I am outnumbered and managed to down somebody I will pop a stealth, caltrops and Shortbow 4 (choking gas). The combination of bleed ans poison gives me extra time for a stomp but the enemy can still manage to zerg rez.

IMO the rate of rezzing from down state is way to high. It’s ridiculous.

Thieves ruining pvp

An elementalist commenting on the thief having everything is funny. Elementalist is by far a more rounded class for all play types, while a thief has a narrower applicability to group play.

This^^^.

I should also add that thieves have very little CC or AOE and in general can’t contribute much in large scale fights compared to an Elementalist or Warrior. Thieves are supposed to excel in mobility, single target DPS and be very hard to catch at the same time. It is their role to excel in small scale fights. If you were playing as tank d/d ele and 1v1 the glass cannon thief then you have no excuse and its an learn to play issue. If you were playing as a glass staff ele then it obviously would have been harder if the thief knew what he was doing and because staff builds are only meant for large scale fights.

I kinda forgot my traits as a leveling ranger but I usually had power and condition damage gear. I used traps. shortbow and sword/torch. I really liked the aoe damage the traps and torch provided. Also, I always had two feline type pets because they do a lot of damage.

Some good times I had with the Plank before they fully removed it from WvW on 4/30/13. I’ll never have this much fun in WvW ever again. Hope you enjoy this video as much I enjoyed using the Plank. Rest in peace, Planks. No repair fees were incurred in the making of this video. (death from fall = no repair bill)

I think there is a CD if you dodge once (no matter if a condition got removed or not).
You dodge (without cripple/weakness) —> CD --> you eat a cripple/weakness and you dodge —> nothing happens
CD is 10 secs

Hey, thanks for your incite. I did tests for this and it turns out that it does go on CD whether it not is heals a condition. Not sure if this was intended but it’s quite lame! I also never noticed it had a CD in the first place, that explains a lot. I spam dodge quite often mostly because I use sigils of energy and runes of the adventurer.
