Most memorable non-storyline NPC

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Chessrook.8643

Pretty simple topic here: Who would you consider your most memorable NPC in the game? And before you bring out your Tybalts and your Rytlocks and your Trahearnes (Because hated as he is everyone still remembers him) take note: I’m asking for Non-storyline NPCs. So Destiny’s Edge, your Mentors, the random NPCs you encounter in the personal story, they don’t count. The events, the random people in the city, all those do. So who do you best remember?

Personally? Call me crazy, but Crush Warband. Anyone who’s gone through the Plains of Ashford should know who I’m talking about. Adorable, awesome, and I bet they’re destined for great things when they grow up. I always get a smile on my face when I do their event.

A new suggested addition for WvW: Traps!

in WvW

Posted by: Chessrook.8643

Chessrook.8643

So something someone mentioned in another thread had me thinking about this.

Now before you say “We already have traps”…. no. We have temporary surprise AOE effects. What I’m suggesting are more like, say, the Swampland Fractal.

Beartraps, tripwires, minor spike traps, maybe even minor explosive fire sigils or something. Set on the ground, and perhaps slightly visible. This would actually cripple a zerg, even if only slightly, even if only by causing minor conditions to annoy them.

What I propose is this: One trap would cost one supply. One can place a maximum of 10 traps in a 5-10 meter radius (I don’t know the unit measuring range, I’m guessing here, something that would allow people to dodge around if they’re observant or get through if they’re lucky.). A single person could place up to 10 traps before some traps would need to be triggered or removed to place more. The person must also be standing right next to the trap to set it, and it takes a few seconds (3?) to set.

List of Traps:
Beartrap: Causes cripple for ten-twenty seconds.
Tripwire: Causes knockdown for 3 seconds, cripple for 8 seconds.
Spike trap (I imagine this would use the “Mound of grass with spikes in it” model): Causes 5 seconds of cripple and 10 seconds of bleed.
Land mine Causes knockback, 5 seconds of burning, and minor damage.

Those are just the ideas I have. Any idea how this could be made more fair or interesting, I’d be glad to hear.

Think of the applications. Making supply camps harder to take, mining narrow channels to trim down zerg rushes into Pang or the center of SM, mining the entrance of keeps to get rid of some foes… tripwires or spike traps to surprise supply caravans… could be anything.

Of all the things you mention, I think “Traps” are the best idea. I’ll have to think on this more to develop how it might work…

Best part is it works on two levels! A short joke for the Norn, Human, Sylvari, and Charr telling it, and an intelligence joke for the Asura telling it!

Yanno, I find it interesting, SoR, that you don’t seem to understand how much damage BG is doing to both of us. We have both been attacking Stonemist, true, and we’ve both broken through on different fronts… maybe not the inner gate on your end (As far as I know) but still…

So then why are you sending zerg forces at Ogrewatch? We’ve been trying to hold our forces back off you. Through a combined two-pronged assault we could probably be able to wipe out the forces in Stonemist Keep. Then of course fight each other for whoever ends up owning it in the end, yes, but still…

At this point I don’t care who has Stonemist as long as BG doesn’t still have it fortified and waypointed by tomorrow morning.

The only confusing thing about it is why it hasn’t been fixed yet. And it certainly isn’t nice.

Well it seems nice in concept.

Chessrook.8643

So decided to make myself a thief char (I plan on making one of every class eventually, Thief is number four) and, at level 16, I’m finding myself in a pickle…

Which weapon setup should I use?

I’ve tried a couple, and D/D, S/D, and S/P all stand out due to having something I like, but they all have skills I don’t really use much and am left with wondering what to do with.

D/D is fun because of the mobility and being able to jump around a lot.
S/D I like because of the shadowstep ability and the ability to hit multiple foes, and flanking strike is a nice confusing evade.
S/P I like because of the stun/slash in skill three.
The main issue though is that for the most part, skills 4 and 5 feel… not very good. I barely use them in my combat, so am left trying to pick simply because of skill three. Mind you, like I said, I’m only level 16 and am working on levelling up and completing anything as opposed to PvP or WvW at the moment. So I’m just curious to hear the standard opinions on the weapons or what might work with them.

And for the record, my secondary weapon is the shortbow.

Did the EB jumping puzzle for the first time last night. Stumbled across three SOR players at one point, and ended up doing the Dark Room with them. Despite being horribly outnumbered and likely an easy kill, they left me be as they got through (Before I did!). In the next room, two BG players showed up and tried to kill me. Though by that time some other TC players showed up and helped me kill them, and figure out the rest of the way through.

So yeah. Props to SOR, and screw you BG.

The Guardian Wall: A Theoretical WvW Build

in Guardian

Posted by: Chessrook.8643

Chessrook.8643

So I’ve developed a theory about how a Guardian (Or, better, a group of Guardians) can stop a siege in its tracks. It requires good timing, and is primarily to stop forward momentum instead of actual damage, but theoretically, it could work.

Step One: Once the Gates into a tower or keep are blown down, the Guardian throws up a Wall of Reflection. As the wall is up, the Guardian runs forward into the breach, the enemy foes unable to cross.

Step two: While standing in the breach, the moment the Wall goes down, the Guardian throws down Sanctuary. If the Guardian is standing in the middle of the breach, theoretically the Sanctuary ring should prevent any foes from getting through.

Step three: Just as Sanctuary is ending, the Guardian uses his staff to throw up Line of Warding. Again, no foes can cross. Once the line is thrown up, he switches to a Shield and puts up a Shield of Absorption, protecting him from arrows and ranged attacks, and knocking foes away from the line.

Step four (Optional): While the Shield is up, the next Guardian runs into the bubble and starts the cycle anew.

A single Guardian would, through this method, be able to delay the flood of foes into the Tower or Keep for at least 21 seconds (Which is significant, considering three of the skills have a 40-second cooldown, although Sanctuary is 120 seconds) when utilizing careful and exact timing, although better timing would be more like 19 or 20 seconds factoring in some overlap. With a full group of Guardians, this could theoretically make a barrier that NO siege could pass, buying precious time for reinforcements to arrive.

I haven’t actually tried this yet, and am no expert regarding builds, so I wanted to hear opinions on whether this is a viable option, or how to improve it.

Other possible Tyrian-themed Holidays?

Chessrook.8643

I think the Charr Holiday should be the Anniversary of retaking Ascalon.

Maybe, except they still haven’t quite retaken Ascalon yet. Sure they have Rin and bits and pieces, but there’s still ghosts all over the place rendering large portions relatively uninhabitable. I’d suggest the Searing, but the Charr might be slightly against that considering it was part of their “Worshipping Gods” phase and they REALLY hate the Shaman caste that did that. The only part of Charr history that really seemed to be accepted by all was the uniting by the Khan-ur.

And Meatoberfest would be great, except for the fact it already seems to be something that’s held every day continuously in Diessa Plateau. Were it not for that, it would be perfect.

Other possible Tyrian-themed Holidays?

Chessrook.8643

So we’ve had Halloween, and Wintersday is in progress… what other holidays or events do you think could be made or themed around the game? Be creative, whether world-related or race-specific.

Note: Because we’re not in Cantha, please keep the Canthan New Year and Dragon Festival off the list.

Here’s a few ideas I had…

The Great Hoelbrak Moot (St. Patrick’s Day)
Norn have plenty of moots around the year and around the land, but Hoelbrak has one great moot every year on the anniversary of its founding. Every year Norn come from far and wide to trade tales, boast of their accomplishments, and of course, get completely wasted in the process.

Day of the Claw (Independence Day)
Only one Charr, the Khan-Ur, has ever managed to unite the legions under one banner. What better way to celebrate the anniversary of the uniting of the Charr than by blowing up their enemies? Every year the Charr come together and celebrate, even allowing some of the less fanatical of the Flame Legion to partake in good food, strong drink, and launching fireworks… preferrably at the greatest concentration of their enemies.

Ventari’s Day (Earth Day)
Though the Sylvari are young, they have still seen the holidays and events of the other races, and have tried to find a day of their own. Eventually they decided to celebrate the day Ventari planted the pale tree, celebrating it with dance, wine, song, and even prayer. It culminates with each Sylvari planting a single seedling somewhere on Tyria and whispering one of Ventari’s tenets into it, to spread his knowledge, and the beauty of nature across the land.

The first? Admittedly intriguing.
