Consider bringing the old trait system back

I prefer the old trait system if only because with the new one I can’t have the “piercing bullets/harpoons” trait AND the “run faster with melee weapons” trait.

Yes I know it sounds like I’m mocking or that it’s a minor thing but… I’m not a builder. I don’t focus on ideal builds or getting the most bang for my buck. I found those traits good and liked having them. The fact I can’t have them both really kinda kittenes me off.

That…. actually makes sense. The walls DO strike me as aesthetically similar to Divinity’s Reach, the human city, which Ellen is……..does that mean if we had Evon the city would have been more Charr-like? Slightly?

I can’t use the “Piercing rifle/harpoon shots” and “Run faster while wielding melee weapons” traits at the same time any more. I know this sounds minor, but this really p$@&ed me off and left me in a sour mood while trying to explore LA. I hate when they decide to take freedom of customizability and ramp it down like this.

My question is, are the non-tradable Exotics gained from this process account-bound or soulbound? For example, say I want The Flameseeker Prophecies for my Guardian, only to find that the precursor requires Weaponsmithing to craft, a skill which my Warrior has maxxed out. Can I get the exotic, craft it on my Warrior, then hand it to my Guardian so she can use it in the meantime, only to send it back to my Warrior later on for the next step?

Not quite what you’re thinking. I’m referring to the fact that the Engineer is getting a Hammer. I believe that the entire reason they gave him that is because of a joke…

Whenever you have a problem with something technical like a computer or the office printer, one of the main ways a person tends to fix it is called “Percussive Maintinence”. Which is, basically, smacking it with your hand.

What is more fitting for an engineer, who builds and repairs technology, than a hammer that allows him to perform Percussive Maintinence on some rampaging golems?

[Possible spoilers] The Mordremoth Massacre

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Chessrook.8643

After watching the video of the battle against Mordremoth, I’ve been left wondering if there were any surviving airships after the fight. There were so many, and despite the sabotage of the Sylvari, surely at least one survived.

This theory has spawned into a full event I imagined up, with several ships spawned from the Pact that I think makes sense. I’m just curious what you guys think of it.

Within the pact, there were eight unique ships. Five airships were given to the five races, and staffed fully and only by that race, and three airships given solely to the three Orders, for them to hold and claim as their own. Of these eight airships, only four managed to return from the battle. And almost no other Airships in the fleet returned.

These ships are the Claw’s End, the Alchemy, the Queen’s Glory, the Raven, and the Pale Leaf. The Valorous Soldier, the Unknown Mystery, and the Hidden Blade. When the battle began, they fought hard, managing to fight back some of the vines at first… until the Sylvari turned. The Unknown Mystery exploded in a massive burst of energy, one of the Priory’s experimental weapons sabotaged and destroying their ship. The Vigil and Whispers ships fought back the saboteurs, the former due to the Vigil’s discipline and the latter due to the Whispers’ natural distrustfulness and awareness of others. They, and the other remaining ships, saw how badly the fight was going and turned to flee.

But they had a problem. The Pale Leaf, a ship manned entirely by traitorous Sylvari. Showing what courage they could, the Claw’s End and the Valorous Soldier turned their guns upon their fellow pact ship, distracting it and enabling the remaining airships to escape.

Once they escaped, they went their separate ways. The Hidden Blade went back to the pact camp, to alert the Commander that HE/SHE was now in charge. The Queen’s Glory went back to Kryta, to provide protection from their southern borders. The Alchemy returned to the Asuran lands, desperate to provide help before Rata Sum is crushed between the Sylvari and Mordremoth. And the Raven went down to Fort Trinity, to alert the rest of the Pact, what remained in Orr, of how badly the battle went, and how devastated the Pact had become.

This is what I see in my mind. Are there any stories from the battle you envision?

SPOILER: My own theory about the Vision

in Living World

Posted by: Chessrook.8643

Chessrook.8643

I think I understand it, and here is how I see it.

The first part we see (After diving through the branches and trees of the Pale Tree) is a land of clouds, with buildings slowly rising upwards, trying to reach the heavens, sending beams of energy into the sky. This, combined with the sandy, dusty color makes me think of only one thing.
The Crystal Desert.
Now those who didn’t play GW1, here’s how that plays in.
The Margonites once sailed on the Crystal Sea, which later became the Crystal Desert. While there, in an attempt to reach the gods, they built great towers and structures, higher and higher. Suffice to say, they failed. Their towers still remain in the Crystal Desert as a testament to their failure.
There’s more, however. In the center, a light, an object appears, only to fall downward into a cavern of crystal.
Purple crystal like this has been seen before… good old Kralky. And yes he is in the Crystal Desert, but he went there to deal with his traitorous lieutenant… Glint. We are told here that something relating to Glint is what we seek.
As we watch, the Crystal is shattered, and the glowing light destroyed. Glint’s death. But then it becomes surrounded by vines… lots and lots of vines. Such vines are seen wherever Moldy is… and in the Maguuma.
Tieing this in to what has been hinted at, that the Zephyrites are hiding something in the Maguuma and deal with Glint, this is what I believe.

What we are to do is find Glint’s Remains, or Glint’s Child, deep within the Maguuma, and attain the assistance of a traitorous Dragon Lieutenant, in order to defeat Mordremoth, if not more.

My theory on what the Eternal Alchemy is

in Lore

Posted by: Chessrook.8643

Chessrook.8643

Or more specifically, how this whole “System” works, based on theories, knowledge, and what we saw in that cutscene.

Specifically, my theory is that Tyria, the universe, is a Magic Producer. Within the core of it it produces magic continuously, eternally, without end. However, it can only contain so much. Like any container, eventually the magic will reach the barriers containing it and burst out, destroying Tyria and the contents, and spreading the magic across the Mists.

Here’s where the dragons come in. When Tyria reaches a certain level of “Magic fullness”, it lets off little spurts… little leaks. Not enough to stop it filling, but enough for the failsafes to activate.

Cue the dragons, who upon sensing the magic, activate and try to siphon out that energy to their worlds. While I am unsure how this affects their worlds, their realms, their domains, what it does is drain Tyria of magic to keep it from blowing apart at the seams. The dragons are simply their vessels from which they drain the magic. The conduits they siphon with.

And then we get to what we saw of Mordremoth in the cutscene… of Mordremoth merging with Tyria. I think he is trying to merge his realm with Tyria’s, and he may have been planning this for some time. He wants HIS realm to be that producer, that magic source. And a merging of realms has been seen once before, with Abaddon. I do not think the other dragons will approve of this, as it too is probably a breaking of the Way Things are Meant to Be.

Regardless, that is what I see as the “Eternal Alchemy” in a way.

Probably because his other two 80’s are a ranger and another ranger. Baddump tish.

I find it a wise idea to look at every idea one thinks of and go “How can this be abused?” That might explain why it’s not implemented.

Rules of the Arena

in WvW

Posted by: Chessrook.8643

Chessrook.8643

With the new Arena up, I feel perhaps we should set up a list of unofficial rules for all those within to follow. For the sake of common courtesy and the like. I’ll come up with a few simple ideas that I hope work.

NOTE: WORK IN PROGRESS

1: The main central arena is primarily for GvG. If two guilds show up, groups fighting in the main arena must, upon finishing their battles, give way to the two guilds. If no guild is present, small groups of 5v5 or three-sided free-for-alls have the priority in the center. Smaller duels may take place around the edges of the arena.

2: Fighting MAY take place in the grandstands, but ONLY 1v1 duels. This way, whether there is a large guild battle or group fights happening in the arena, there is always a place for one-on-one duels.

3: The two observation decks on the East and West sides are Neutral Zones. THERE IS TO BE NO FIGHTING OR FEARING IN THE OBSERVATION DECKS. Violators of this rule are to be slaughtered by every single other person on the deck, and allies are NOT to resurrect the violator.

4: NO INTERFERING WITH OTHER FIGHTS. If you see two people or two groups fighting each other, leave them be and try to avoid their AOEs. If you get damaged by accident, simply keep moving and do not respond.

5: DO NOT SNARE OUTSIDERS. This will be considered an invitation to join your battle, possibly resulting in a 2 on 1. If you intend this, do not attack the snared outsider unless they accept the invitation and move towards you.

6: Bow to your opponents as a matter of courtesy. Do so before each battle (Or to invite a certain foe to a one-on-one) and the victor should bow to the loser as a matter of respect.

7: DO NOT FINISH OFF YOUR OPPONENT UNLESS IT IS A BATTLE TO THE DEATH. Indicate you wish such a battle by taunting your opponent after bowing. If the opponent taunts back, then it shall be a battle to the death. If instead the opponent bows again, or does not taunt, do not battle to the death.

8: NO FIGHTING IN THE ENTRY HALL. Likewise, keep the edges from the entry hall to the grandstands clear.

This is just a base and the ideas I had. If anyone has any modifications, additions, or suggestions, post here. We’ll go over and modify until we come up with something that works for everyone.

Thinking about it for a bit, here’s an idea I had to get a concept I mentioned earlier across. I’ll have to bring it up in several parts, mind you.

CRYSTALLIZED ICE

The wars against the Elder Dragons are increasing, with their forces pushing harder than ever. Branded from the Crystal Desert are pouring out into the Fields of Ruin, threatening Ebonhawke with deadly creatures such as Branded Hydra and Branded Wurms. Even the stalwart old ascalonians need help pushing back the forces of the Crystal Dragon. But that is not all… Icebrood of Jormag have pushed into Frostgorge Sound with surprising force, threatening the hardiest Norn and some of the last ice ships of the Kodan. Both sides need help in this war, but there isn’t enough to push back everyone. Who will you save from destruction?

What Players See:
The regions mentioned will get increased numbers of the related forces, with the areas mentioned even getting specialized events to defend it from the invasions. (Events to defend Ebonhawke from the Branded, or the Kodan Iceships like Blue Ice Shining from the Icebrood). There may also be specialized vendors, who will give items like special weapon skins in exchange for war supplies.

What Players Don’t See:
Behind the scenes, something keeps track of what the players do. Perhaps which side gets more events completed, or which side gets more war supplies is donated to them. The players will not know who has more, or even that such numbers are being tracked. Why is this important?

What Happens After:
Because the side that gets less will be decimated. If the Fields of Ruin gets less support, Ebonhawke and the regions around it will be destroyed, or overrun with Branded. If Frostgorge Sound gets less support, the last Ice Ships of the Kodan will get decimated, or even destroyed by Icebrood. But that’s not all.
The side that gets more will have succeeded so well, that those within that area may even be able to push back, opening a new region to the North of Frostgorge, or pushing into the Crystal Desert, starting a steady progress towards the next of the Elder Dragons.

Through this, you give the players choice over what they can see next. Players see the results of their actions and their impact in the world. And they will feel harder the effects of what they do, with the potential loss of major areas.

And it all happens naturally. Instead of a clicked vote.

I think something like this has the potential to make players very upset. Because one side will always lose out, it would feel really arbitrary to help Ebonhawk, for example, and put a lot of work into saving it, and then see it destroyed anyway just because more people wanted to play in Frostgorge. I think that was one of the things that made tempers run high during the voting, because we weren’t just voting for one side to win, but also for the other to fail.

Oh I know about that, but that’s why they wouldn’t even SAY that one side had the chance to fail. Nobody would know until after it ends, and the results are seen. It also shows much more of an impact in the world and the story than the more direct and linear way it has been going. Say what you will about the tempers and raging during the voting, I liked how we had two directions it could go, and how there was a chance for it to fail. It was even engaging in its own way, knowing there was something actually on the line for once.

That image shows that not only structures and mechanics are not well thougt out for defence, but also supply lines for borderlands actually favor the attackers and not the defender.

Perhaps this was intended? After all, it’s easier for the defender to, well, defend. Look at all the places they can assault from within their own captured structures, and how many structures they can easily get to from their base. Two towers, one-to-three supply camps, and a keep. The attackers can each only get to one tower and one camp easily, possibly one keep. And that’s not counting the fact Bay is siegable from Garrison. All this considered, maybe the attackers having more ease getting supply for themselves is meant to offset this?

In addition, I don’t think the proposed idea for supply lines is very good. While sound in theory, it suffers one fatal flaw: Ease of disruption. All it takes is one small group managing to sneak near the enemy spawn and suddenly they’ve denied ALL siege for the ENTIRE map for one side. And THAT is purely decimating. And if one side gets pushed back to spawn, even if they take a camp through one of the side exits they won’t be able to get supply anywhere.

I wouldn’t say defending is easier. If you want to defend a tower against a blob… have fun. it takes about 2-3 minutes for them to get in and wipe everyone.

I was referring more to the overall map. i.e. it’s easier for the Home team to take a majority of the map than it is for either of the two attacking teams on a borderlands.

Admittedly I haven’t read back through all the pages and I’m not really a sPVPer, but I just want to put my two cents in. You guys say you want GvG and the like, and I’ve seen mentionings of a MOBA-like map… but personally I think it should be drawing inspiration from WvW.

Now I don’t mean a godly-huge map with all sorts of supply and towers and stuff like that. What I’m suggesting is plop down two towers (like from WvW) on either end of a map. Bam, you got the whole thing set up. Lord in the middle, guards around the tower, destructible walls and gates around it, possibly even defenses like cannons and oil and such (Maybe such upgrades purchasable for the Guild?).

Some things would have to be changed of course. Supply would likely be non-existant. Repairing defenses should probably not be an option (Allowing battles to last less time), siege might need to be worked differently (Perhaps spawned by capping points?), and gate and wall health might need to be toned down a bit.

There could also be “Assault/defend” variants similar to the original Guild Wars. One keep on one side, and one defended camp on the other. These could allow for other things as well, such as the Assaulters getting the option to escort siege golems to try to take down the Defenders’ gate, which the Defenders have to stop.

Something I’d like to see is more of the Living Story that gets affected by what happens in the living story, similar to the Cutthroat Politics event.

Now, we can’t ALWAYS do a vote like in the Politics event (And anything involving politics is likely going to result in lots of flared tempers and nobody wants that again) so instead… how about something else?

Perhaps two threats are happening in two radically different areas, possibly organized by one person (As an example, I’ll use Scarlet and the various factions she has under her leafy thumb). Perhaps, instead of the Molten Alliance assaulting adjacent areas, she sends out her Aetherblade Pirates on an assault in Ascalon, while she uses her pull with the Nightmare Court to push against the Maguuma.

Both of these big events would be going on at the same time, with forces pushing against them. Realistically, there’s no way to stop them both, so players have to decide… do they fight to defend the Black Citadel from Aetherblade airships? Or do they assist the Asura protect themselves from incoming Nightmare Court?

After a two-week fight (Of course) the result is shown. No matter what, one front of the war would have more attention than the other. The side that managed to successfully defend itself more would return to normal. The other side, however, would have a drastic change, as members of the faction would overrun part of the maps in that region, possibly decimating towns or sending NPCs elsewhere.

The best part is, you wouldn’t have to TELL people this would happen. Most people would assume “Oh, they’ll come and attack, we’ll push them back, everything will be fine afterwards”. Only for, surprise, what you did has consequences. Everyone fought the Nightmare Court because they didn’t want to deal with the Aetherblade’s stuns? Congrats! The town of Naegling has been pillaged and destroyed!

If you can find a way to get it to work this way (And hide the truth behind a “No matter who wins we lose” or “The fate of this battle will change the face of Tyria forever” kind of stuff), it could result in some interesting things. Maybe even open an opportunity for more events in the area.

May as well be the Staff Guardian who feels useless in the zerg and not too useful against towers and keeps unless I’m on a ram or a cata.

Now stop taking the camp’s supply when it’s at 99/100. We need to improve the supply deliveries.

Just saw this and felt the need to respond to it.

Staff guardians are probably on par with or better than elementalists on water attunement when it comes to support. If you run GS as your second weapon, you also have incredible DPS. Guardians are one of the core zerg classes in WvW due to your buffs and tankiness.

Also, camp supply is there to be taken. Rarely do I see camps with more than 60 supply, unless my server is absolutely owning the map and the camps have just sat there untouched by the other servers.

Actually my second weapon has been scepter/shield (Because shield has some more defensive use, and scepter gives me range and control, snaring guys trying to run. Though I’m starting to have second thoughts since that snare always seems to be blocked, evaded, or missed…).

And sorry Silver, I’m on TC. Woots!

But yanno what else? I’m not a scrub. Sure I haven’t played in ages, but I DID play before. I joined in the fight, I helped on EB, and after I got the four JPs I went out and went back to doing the same thing I did way back in those days.

Because SOMEBODY has to make sure those supplies get to the keep quickly and those camps actually upgrade.

And SOMEBODY has to alert when a small squad is taking the green camp. May as well be the Staff Guardian who feels useless in the zerg and not too useful against towers and keeps unless I’m on a ram or a cata.

Now stop taking the camp’s supply when it’s at 99/100. We need to improve the supply deliveries.

For those curious, the picture I include here has me swimming around the barrier, bumping into it most of the way around.

That is… huge…

Hah, I noticed that! I’m a big fan of Magister Tassi, and giving her a GLaDOS-like voice filter through the golem is a cute touch.

I actually found it hard to tell whether she was closer to GLaDOS or one of the turrets!

Wow….. even your misses crit. CRITICAL MISS!!!

Critical Fail actually. When that happens you trip and stab yourself in the eye.

No seriously, look up Critical Fail tables for D&D and the like. A really bad one and you fail so badly with a dagger swing you KILL YOURSELF.

Or when chewing Elthurien’s Wondrous Inflatable Gum of Chewing, a critical failure causes the player to bite his tongue in a most uncomfortable and painful manner.

A critical failure when blowing bubbles with said gum causes blindness when the bubble explodes violently in the players face

Can remove gum from eyes to remove blindness in 1d4 rounds. Can clean off gum from head in 1d4 hours. 1d4 days if character has long hair.

Are there going to be devs for each profession that frequently visit the profession forums so that those players may collaborate with them to hopefully make their professions more enjoyable?

Please….?

Absolutely .I hope we can role this initiative out to all the separate forums and perhaps even create new forums with the intention being that specialist devs in each area will be attached to a particular forum on an ongoing basis (-:

The initial plan is essentially a test to see how the process works, which we will evolve based on discussion with each other.

Hope that makes sense? I am in between meetings and running around (-:

I love the pic by the way. Dogs Rock!

231 gold or so. Then I spent most of it on parts for my legendary (Onyx Lodestones and some other mats to complete the Gift of the Flameseeker). How do I get it? By playing the game.

Stacking and Exploiting

After being calmer after being a bit ragey primarily over the exploiters in the last part (That was most of my rage, more than the AC stacking, to be honest) I want to address a few things.

Yes, OK, there are times for stacking and I admit I’ve joined in it…. when not stacking more frequently leads to frustration and death. Such as, say, Giganticus Lupus or, occasionally, Alpha. I’ve joined in stacking with minimal complaints there because otherwise it does lead to pointless frustration.

Bosses like the spider? There’s no need for stacking. As far as I know, anyway. Like I said, I’ve done it dozens of times in the past (Had to for my Gift of Ascalon) and never seen the stacking until today. I don’t know anything about any revamp it got though, and for me dodging and moving around and spending the time to rez people is more interesting and more engaging than standing on top of four other people, hitting 1, and Akitteng for 3 minutes. Rewards for no effort, yay, just what I always wanted…

As said, my main rage was towards the exploiters who decided to wait until the people who didn’t follow them died so they could do their own little exploit. Hell even when I get upset about people stacking or exploiting or whatever I still CONTRIBUTE. I still fire my shots or the like. I don’t just stand there picking my nose and doing nothing so I can get my way.

As for people talking about my build… it may not be your ideal Hundered-Blades-And-Rifle-Kill-Everything build, but screw that. It gives me some decent damage and interrupts and movable AOE that can make use of combo fields for the mace/axe, making me fairly effective against groups of trash mobs or individual targets that need to have heavy attacks interrupted. Which is mainly what I use it for. Bosses in dungeons and other high-risk targets (Like Aetherblades or the like) I generally use my rifle on. A pretty good amount of damage output from that that I like.

Stacking its not an exploit it just makes it easier to melee boss/rez people/drop heals or whatever you want , if everybody is spread out it’s worse trust me. The Spider Queen you are talking about .. if you dont stack she will just one shot your whole party with an aoe. If you do the runs via LFG i would say 90% of people will use the stacking method, if you don’t like it you could start your own party and say something like
‘’ no stacking’’ but that would be a huge waste of time. Just do it and you will get used to it. I dont know what class/weapon you use but sure if you are an engineer , it must suk to stack like this.

Warrior, actually. Mainly using mace/axe and rifle. Here’s the thing though, I’ve completed AC dozens of times and yet today is the FIRST time I have EVER seen the spider stacking method.

Admittedly I haven’t done AC in a couple months but still…

I really have to ask here, am I the only one who HATES this? Frack am I the only one who is actually trying to have a good time?

Joined three AC dungeons via the LFG tool… each one decided to stack in a tiny corner next to the stairs at the first boss. Didn’t even stay beyond that (Except the first one, who booted me when I wouldn’t join them stacking on the rubble just after the spider) After I realized they weren’t even bothering to split from that, I decided to go to a CM run.

The run started ok. Did the Asura path and were killing things… somewhat well. Aside from three guys deciding to run into a room in range of six mobs instead of sniping down three guys before taking out archers. And skipping Seamus and using the cutscene trick on the guy in the warehouse, fine.

Things started to look bad though when one of the guys started asking for stacking. For every mob. When he said to stack for what’s-her-name (the one who warps around) I stood back and grumbled. Yeah I admit it but dammit, I was bored. I do these dungeons to have fun, not… this.

The final boss though…. again, they decided to do the “stack on a rock” exploit.

Two of them.

The other three of us tried to do it legit. The remaining two simply stood and watched and contributed absolutely nothing until we died, at which point they proceeded to exploit to hell and back, lambasting us the whole way. I didn’t even stay for the reward and just left (Though in hindsight I wish I could have convinced the other two to join me in booting them.).

So I ask you. After all this, am I the ONLY ONE who is actually still trying to have FUN in these dungeons instead of just rushing through everything as fast as fracking possible in the most dull, boring, repetitive, least-effort-requiring way imaginable?

People in white gear with 0 achievement points can still complete it when they hit level 30, so it wouldn’t make sense to exclude them.

How in the nine hells could you reach level 30 without having a single Achievement Point? That doesn’t seem physically possible…

Sell/Salvage/Post/Trash?

Basically want to put up a poll here. Basically, when you get your loot after a long run through events and killing creatures, what do you do with it? Do you sell it to a nearby merchant? Do you salvage it into materials? Do you post it on the TP? Do you dump it in the trash? I’m curious to see if anyone else has regular strategies for things.

For me, I do it like this…
Commons and Rares I salvage (Rares with the high-level salvage kit).
Exotics I post to the TP, selling high and waiting for someone to buy it.
Fines and Masterworks I used to sell to merchants, but since the MF patch I check the TP. If I can get a decent amount of coin from selling it low, I sell. If not, I salvage.
And of course, greys get tossed to the nearest merchant.

What about you?
