Look at it this way, if it was here all the time we would get tired of playing it. As it is, if they bring it out for us to play every few months it will always be a treat.

Also, we got my oldest son started on computers when he was about your daughters age. He says he remembers playing the Sesame street abc, and numbers game we had on the computer. He is now a software engineer and is doing just fine.

The thing is, you are doing things with your daughter, not having the computer and games babysit her. There is a big difference.

It depends on what materials you need. For my recent crafting help I used:

You can use that to decide if you can purchase the materials or need to farm for more gold or the materials themselves.

You know that actually sounds fun. Except for the losing your armor and gold bits.

I remember a special event in another game that had these mobs that came out of portals. These were hilarious. The mobs could throw you a long ways in the air. One time they threw my character so far she landed amongst higher level mobs some of which were bosses. She was massacred. I was sorry to see those mobs go when the event was over.

Good times.

80 Elementalist 404 hours/357 deaths (mostly WvW and Dungeons)
80 Ranger 776 hours/ 399 deaths(mostly PvE, LS, the only one that’s mapping every zone)
80 Necromancer 419 hours/539 deaths – I laughed when I saw this (mostly WvW and Dungeons) Edit: I went back and checked 5,291 kills in wvw – not all are by this character but most were.
80 Guardian 166 hours/ 142 deaths (leveled in WvW, mostly retired)
80 Mesmer 231 hours/ 38 deaths (leveled mostly via dailys and crafting)
80 Engineer 166 hours / 168 deaths(mostly WvW)
28 Warrior 34 hours/8 deaths (currently leveling mostly via PvE dailys, mapping, and crafting, the deaths were all in WvW)
2 Thief 6 hours/ 4 deaths (waiting on another race to reroll this one)

My observation on my own characters: the number of deaths is directly proportional to the amount of time spent in WvW for each of my characters.

Yeah, I like stories too. One of the things I liked about Everquest II was all the stories I could follow along with. However, cohesive stories work better in RPG. I’ve decided that if I want a story I will read a book or play a RPG that has a good story. I don’t expect MMO’s to really have stories anymore. Although GW1 did a better job with stories in the missions and quests they had, it still had the same humor that is present here.

Age range?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katz.5143

Katz.5143

Interesting.

This reminds me of a time back in GW1. The monks staged a strike. They were chanting funny sayings like “No deal, no heel”. It was absolutely hilarious. Most people got the humor of the situation. Others took it dead serious. I got as big a laugh of the people who saw NO humor in the situation as I did out of the people joking around. You would think it was real life and there were going to be serious consequences to it. Too funny.

I personally enjoyed the snowballs and the cow-ta-pult. But then again I’ve always laughed at corny jokes.

I think you have to look at this game as being more like walking through a city (no stories folks, just people doing their usual daily stuff) and not like a novel where there is a cohesive plot.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Katz.5143

I still do the dailies and monthly but I find them easy to complete while playing. I just look at what is available and select the ones that will naturally occur with what I want to do. Then if that isn’t five I fill in with the quick ones such as craft, daily activity, etc. Most of the time the daily completes and then I end up with other categories of the daily completing without even trying.

However, I’m burnt out on living story. I really wanted to work on world 1 of sab as I was halfway through the achievements for it from last time it was available but the last living story produced a huge desire for a vacation from short term content. I hope that SAB will be back again at a time when I am ready to play it. I’m glad it is reoccurring content.

I have like the OP decided to purposely ignore parts of the game in the future. Temporary rushed buggy content stresses me. From now on I will only participate if it looks like relaxed fun. If it looks like “you must do it now! cause it will be gone soon, mwhahahahaha!” then I will turn my back on it. Sadly I actually enjoyed the last living story. I found it fun. But I could not complete it all and it irritates me that part of what I could not complete is gone forever.

Living story to me is like a great big chocolate cake with your favorite ice cream to go with it…and strawberries on top. Sure is tasty but after eating the entire cake you feel kind of ill.

Reasons you did not choose a Charr

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’m one of those who likes all the different race’s. I have 1 asura, 1 charr, 1 norn, 2 humans, and 2 sylvari.

I want to experience the story of each race, their culture, their flavor. The charr area is very interesting.

One thing that does concern me is that I fear less attention will be paid to asura, charr, and sylvari due to the percentages of who plays which. I hope that isn’t the case because if you add up the other races then they equal the mass that is human. Therefore, collectively they are as important.

I wish they would make the orders more important and integral to all things. The Durmand Priory are there and this would be a great way to have the stories available.

And the other point I agree with is that things shouldn’t just appear and disappear with no explanation. The rebuilding of the fountain after mad king was great. The appearance and disappearance of other things is contrary to making an immersible experience.

Professions question

Katz.5143

I advise against putting all 8 crafting disciplines on one character, on the basis that you can only have two active at any given time. It can cost up to 40 silver to activate another discipline, and you have to pay this fee every time you want to change, so if you want to avoid any heavy losses, make 4 characters and do 2 disciplines on each.

I did the two on four characters approach myself also. It all gets down to your personal preference but I went with my warrior taking armorsmith/weaponsmith, my ranger taking leatherworking/huntsman, and my mesmer taking tailoring/cooking. That way I can remember that they are matched with the armor that they wear and weapons they use (except cooking of course). Then my necro does the artificing/jewelry because it is Asura and in my mind it fit. My choice of who took each craft was done in a way to help me remember which one did what. The reason I put two crafts on each one was to save money.

If you are the type person who will play only one character ever, then you may prefer to have all crafting professions on one main character.

What class to play with a ranger

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Katz.5143

Katz.5143

I think its more of, what class appeals to you and then the both of you selecting weapons and skills that fit how you want to play.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

If she wants to play her ranger using a longbow primarily, then I would select a class for yourself that can also do damage at a range. For example, if you play a warrior you could use the rifle and bow as the weapons of choice while playing with her.

If she is going to mix in melee with her ranger, then you could have a warrior with a range weapon that swaps with a melee weapon.

Lets say you are playing a necro and using marks and wells and she is using a longbow. She may use a longbow skill that pushes the target away from your ground areas and that lessens your effectiveness. However, the necro could use minions instead of marks and wells, and it wouldn’t be as much of an issue. OR, if she used traps combined with the marks and wells, you would both benefit from the combination.

I think to what to keep in mind is, at what distance from the target will she mostly be playing and which classes have weapons/skills that will also reach the target. Most classes have options for ranged and melee fighting styles so as long as you work together to be synergistic, you can play what you want.

The main thing is that you will just need to look at the weapons and skills available to your classes and make choices that work together rather than choices that will be frustrating to one or both of you. I’ve seen it from both ends, I’ve accidentally annoyed people with my ranger by using the knockback skill and I have a necro that uses marks and wells and I’ve had rangers and other classes use knockback skills that prevent the targets from receiving damage from my necro skills.

I started out leveling crafting at the same time as my characters. I found that it was costing me too much money and the only thing I made in time for it to be useful was food and the bags.

I have 6 of the crafting professions leveled to 400 now and 2 that are still pretty low (less than 200). Pretty soon all will have to go up to level 500 but I’m in no hurry. The only reason I will eventually level them all is for the sake of completion. I may eventually make ascended gear but I’m not going to focus on it as it seems too much like work and I get enough work at work.

I too would like for them to slow down. Especially when bugs pose a problem. This last content I neglected Scarlet’s playhouse and had two achievements left in it. I would have had time most likely to get those if the invasion 13/13 hadn’t bugged. The combination of bugs and short time for completion isn’t a good one.

It is illogical to expect to not have bugs when things go live. They should release content and have a time period for bug finding and fixing then a time period to play the content. Then a break. Also, most of it should be permanent in some way. Disposable stuff is bad for the GW2 environment. :P

They could just have separate areas for them and just tell us over and over until it sinks in that not all blocks of achievements are for everyone. Time-Gating?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katz.5143

Katz.5143

I don’t mind time gating for max level armor. I do mind it on things such as collecting items in short term content.

Take the scenario of two people playing the exact same total amount of time in the game. One logs on every day for a little time and collects items such as baubles or something equivalent in other content. The other can’t do that but has one weekend day to devote to the game. I think the guy on the one weekend day should be able to collect items all day if he wants. If it is gated at once per day then he may decide to just forget it because he can’t really collect enough to make enough progress to obtain items.

Perhaps they could have a total weekly limit that applies. Then you obtain the items by acquiring some each day or all in one sitting.

Katz.5143

Hey Josh, I’ve been following this thread for quite a while and I thought you might like some feedback.

Thanks for the quality feedback. I agree with most of what you say. One problem I’m realizing now is that when I first built 2-2 it was not a long level. I never changed the layout, but as we had more and more ideas for new mechanics they kept getting packed into that space. (and subsequently meant a bunch of 36 hour days for me and Lisa!) I’ve now come up with the ultimate idea: The Anti-Idea Helmet. (Please don’t steal this idea, I want to patent it.) It’s a helmet that the each member of the SAB team is given. Like a construction helmet, but it’s got brain reading electrodes or what-have-you that can sense when you start to get creative. At that point a spring loaded mallet pivots down from its mount on the top/front of the helmet, smacking you in the forehead, discouraging new ideas. With this invention I can guarantee that the next release for SAB will be shorter, less dense, and have fewer new mechanics. (and the subsequent bugs that accompany them)

Nah. Your creative ideas are great and don’t lose your enthusiasm. The love of what you do shows. Just put in some soft checkpoints like someone suggested earlier. Perhaps have more zones per world so that people can break their time up into smaller chunks.

General & Specific LS (SAB) Comments

in Super Adventure Box: Back to School

Posted by: Katz.5143

Katz.5143

1. Make this permanent. This is not directed at a person who has no control over decisions that are made but at whoever makes the decisions. Decide now to make this permanent to stop stressing people out over the indecision. It’s great fun.

2. Thanks for having world 1 completeable (is that a word?) still. I am much slower at this type content than many and got a lot of world 1 done (maybe half?). I love that I can still do world 1 now. My goal this time is to complete world 1. I may not even get to world 2. I like that I can do that. Please continue this.

3. Make the rewards permanent. I got the 2 rewards that I wanted the most the first time around. I earned enough for the backpack and luckily got the shield (the one weapon I wanted most) from a chest. I would like to be able to earn the others from world 1. I would suggest that you think of some mechanism to tie the rewards to the world that introduced them – that is, world 1 items are earned from doing world 1, etc.
This is especially true since I don’t plan on getting world 2 done this time round.

4. Living story in general – please stop waffling about content. Make a decision on whether something is permanent or not and tell us up front. I see that you are slowly moving in that direction and hope that you start minimizing one time content and maximizing permanent additions.

5. I know you aren’t supposed to call out people specifically so – I would like to thank the “not mentioned by name” designer/dev who works on SAB and also the JPs and interacts with the community in such a positive way. This is content that I enjoy but am not really good at (fine motor skills aren’t so great). But still I enjoy and appreciate it. Thank you.

Edit: Perhaps world 1 old skins could still be a random drop from the boss chest at the end?

Also, I would encourage pursuing a progress reporting system for letting you know how many baubles, kills, etc. are left. This applies to LS in general. The invasion completer needed this, other content needs this. In general, anything that you need to complete a certain number of needs to let you know how much progress you have made.

Tequatl Rising - Step in the right direction

in Living World

Posted by: Katz.5143

Katz.5143

Reaction to the second phase of the September Living Story, Tequatl Rising, seems to be mixed so far, but I for one, think that this is a good thing. It’s an example of taking an existing part of the world and expanding upon it, making it more interesting and rewarding to complete. And because it’s (hopefully?) permanent content, players who haven’t visited Sparkfly Fen or who are unable to be present for the two weeks from Sep 17, don’t miss out on content. The new rewards and achievements are there for players to complete at their leisure, and the fact that Tequatl has a chance to drop Ascended mats and weapons means there’ll never be a shortage of players willing to take him on.

Of course I don’t want story-driven Living Story chapters to disappear, but interspersing them with “slower” months like September is exactly what I’ve been wanting ever since things took off after Secret of Southsun. Have one month dedicated to a new story chapter (that lasts for one month), then follow it with a break month consisting of festivals/returning content.

This is, of course, dependent on the assumption that Tequatl isn’t mysteriously going to stop giving out his new rewards/achievements after September is over. Has anyone heard any word from ANet as to whether the new Tequatl achievement category is permanent going forward?

I’m hoping that this will be done for ALL the dragons and it will be a rotating experience. Every two weeks? Every month? Every other month? I don’t care the rotation but permanent and rotating is the key to me liking this. When they aren’t on the rotation they go back to the old way of doing them. The rest of the time they are cool more challenging and more rewarding content. Here’s hoping.

I am still trying to explain the system to people who don’t lurk around the forums and website. Some players only play the game and don’t do research to figure out what the tricks are to getting to the content.

I too would like a 1 week minimum break between temporary content. Two weeks would be even better. 2 weeks on, two weeks off, repeat.
