The introduction of reward tracks got more people into PvP, but a lot of those (including me!) are mainly there to farm reward tracks, either because they are a faster way to the rewards we want (dungeon skins), or they’re the ONLY reliable way to the rewards we want (e.g. Fossils, the Rime Rebreather). If the reward tracks weren’t there, we wouldn’t be in PvP at all.

Quoted for truth.

I am sure that is how many users STARTED to PvP, but you REALLY get into it after a while.

YMMV. Some do get into it, some get driven out of it. I generally dislike PvP, and the more I play it, the more I get tired of that feeling of frustration – from being placed against high-skill players and getting steamrolled, from steamrolling low-skill players, from builds which are buffed and then left as is for half a year, from getting Skyhammer with a non-knockback build and having no build presets, from lagging and skills failing, from crucial skills bugging out, from offensive chat from both my team and opponents, from AFKers, from elitist guildies being elitist in PvP, from newbie guildies being noobish…

I’m playing games to relax, not to dominate others. What some find enjoyable, others find frustrating. With all the above combined, for me PvP is 3/4 frustration and only 1/4 enjoyment. Mainly I do PvP for unique/guaranteed rewards and tomes of knowledge, not because I love it and can’t live without it (since what I currently “love” is high-level fractals with my guildies).

Mesmer's and Thieves the cause of PvP's Meta?

…aaand how many mesmers did we recently see in top-tier PvP to even make a difference again?

In mid games, if you do not have lightning reflexes and got good opponents, you get focused and melt in seconds because everyone knows that if you see a mesmer, it’s that meta shatter which can be focused and bursted down. I can say that I got tired of glass [antikitten] shatter pretty fast and switched to bunker condi for that reason, and I perform better as such. (No, don’t worry, I almost always go for unranked).

Mesmer PvP Dailies Incredibly Rare

in PvP

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Daily rewards are so crap now I’m not sure why anyone would bother to get them. The only reason before was the laurel. You get those for logging in.

Oh please don’t start the same daily discussion again – there’s a megathread for that. I’m using PvP for daily 10AP when everything else is worse, and I’m using it for a quick and dirty daily reward track boost to get the exclusive rewards (armor, rebreather etc.).

Well… How do I put this… It’s randomized! Randomized doesn’t mean well distributed, it means the output is random! If you keep tracking the representation of each profession and do stats in a year, the deviation will be smaller, but for know, there hasn’t been enough dailies to worry about this.

I found it very unlikely to have only 2 mesmer occurrences (counting the today’s one) in 30 days, having 8 classes and 2 of them each day. I’m not sure it’s pure RNG, looks like a rotation with a predefined low weight.

As a person who hates playing as mesmer, I’m glad mesmer pvp daily has only come up a few times. Mesmer and thieve dailies I skip.

As a person who plays only mesmer (and occasionally ranger) in PvP and hates everything else, I’m displeased mesmer dailies are so rare.

First one sounds like click-bait when posted in the PvP forum.
Second isn’t all that controversial in the PvP forum.
/conclusion

The first thread was posted in the General Discussion (“PvE”) subforum and got its attention there. Why it was moved to PvP section – no idea (because it contained “PvP” in the title? similar things happen quite often, threads get moved/merged based on the “trigger” words in the title and not the actual contents), but it was, and now the attention of the local inhabitants moved from the “click-bait” thread to a “support your game mode” thread.

Since I haven’t bothered the support before, they were kind enough to make an exception and refund the set!

On topic: I still wonder if adding a red “You cannot equip two of the same rings on one character!” note next to “Unique” costs more developer time than the amount of time spent by support to refund these rings over and over again…

3. OPEN WORLD PvP / FACTIONS

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • We want competition. We can’t live without competition in games, a game without competition is boring and is not worth staying in.
  • We invested time/money in our gear, so we want our gear to matter. We do not like equalized stats in sPvP and we do not like zergs in WvW.
  • Separate PvP servers with PvE maps can be added to give PvP/PvE-focused people a choice.
  • Factions add a lot to both lore and gameplay.

[-] Arguments against:

  • GW2 is not that other game. GW2 is a cooperative game, not a competitive game: you don’t compete over loot, nodes and such. For competition, we have two options: sPvP and WvW. If current PvP/WvW game modes are not enough, you can always suggest new ones, but in the boundaries of competitive areas.
  • Open world PvP is detrimental. Different kinds of players exist: those who prefer fair and healthy competition, and those who prefer fierce and unhealthy competition. The first are usually peaceful non-hardcore teenagers and casual grown-up players (which turn out to be the target audience for which GW2 was actually designed in the first place, with all the timidness of content, failproofness and cooperativeness in mind), and the latter are usually aggressive teenagers who are using online games as a sublimation for unsatisfied offline desires of being “better” than others, while not being constrained by offline moral and law limits. This usually leads to offensive behaviour, which can already be seen in both PvP and WvW (with as far as death threat whispers); such things are not tolerated in GW2. Open world PvP attracts the second type of players, and since many mature players already live a moderately risky life, they see their games as a comfort zone to rest in, and not a war zone similar to life, and want GW2 to stay as is.
  • In GW2, not gear, but skill is what matters – even if it is the skill of finding the best team composition or the skill of using Skyhammer’s features in the cheesiest possible way. You cannot really buy ultimate superiority for money in this game. The most you can do is buy gems, convert to gold, get full ascended with infusions, eat the most expensive food, buy all gemstore buffs and go roaming in WvW, hoping that the slight boost in stats will outweigh the skill of your opponent.
  • Even on a separate server, you cannot simply turn a PvE map into a PvP map: it was not designed with it in mind. Furthermore, it will thin down and fracture the community, which contradicts with the Megaservers idea.
  • Factions are too hard to implement at this point of the game’s life when the basics have already been put in place. Factions are too hard to add with the current lore in mind.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • A lot of people feel that GW2 is a casual friendly cooperative game which was not designed to have open world PvP, and they want it to remain that way. For competition, sPvP and WvW modes were included in the game. New PvP/WvW game modes, including GvG, with separate large maps, are discussed as valid options.
  • Comment from October 2012:

Anything is possible in the future, but I would be sure to not hold my breath waiting.

[Suggestion] Increase in Level Cap

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lishtenbird.2814

OP, you may find this useful: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/List-of-Common-Controversial-Forum-Topics/first#levelcap

7. GEAR PROGRESSION / LEVEL CAP RAISE

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • A game without progression is pointless. We cannot feel good if we’re not progressing in the game, gear progression and level cap increase will refresh the game and bring people back.

[-] Arguments against:

  • This game is about horizontal progression, not vertical progression. Primarily: skins. That’s why it’s nicknamed Fashion Wars (not Gear Grind Wars), and many people like it for that very reason. Other games squeeze out your money by introducing an obligatory new stat level with every patch; GW2 is honest with you: you paid once and you’re done, you won’t be artificially pushed to pay for the game to “keep up with others”. This is a thing a lot of people start appreciating at some point.
  • Apart from players who simply enjoy challenges which come with gear progression, there is a considerable amount of players who need gear progression to establish psychological superiority (see also Open-world PvP and Dueling). These players are focused on infinite progression because they can use online video games as a compensation for unsatisfied offline desires (being “better” by comparing oneself to “noobs”). The above usually goes along with offensive behaviour (with as far as death threat whispers), which is not tolerated in GW2. To discourage this kind of players from joining the community, GW2 instead encourages players to work on horizontal progression (looks) or towards the minor long-term vertical goals like ascended and/or legendary gear, fractals personal reward level and PvP/WvW ranks. A considerable amount of players like GW2 for this “casual” atmosphere and would prefer to have as little unhealthy competition among players as possible.
  • It contradicts the GW2’s concept of “pay once, come back when you want”. Casual-type players, unlike hardcore, do not like to be overwhelmed and left behind when they come back, they can as well drop the game altogether. Ascended rarity has already caused an uproar (and according to some claims, lead to many players leaving), while it is rather achievable for an active player and the stat difference can be outweighed by skill. Another level of rarity will split the community even more, possibly resulting in an exodus of players with buyer’s remorse.
  • Challenge can be increased by giving new mechanics to enemies and by increasing their stats without raising the level cap. We can already see it done in zones like Silverwastes.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • “Gear progression” threads are met with negativity by those who bought the advertised casual “no gear treadmill” game, and with positivity from players from other games who are naturally used to gear progression and view it as an incentive to play. The negative approach is considerable.

Please, just no. There are no tanks in this game, and my meditation guardian does not appreciate being slowed down by your logic. While a bunker guardian may not need swiftness (yet has it for some reason), a dps guardian does need it and yet has kitten access to it.

Want a specific stat? Craft it. It’s easily obtainable (as a long-term goal), provided that you play the game and not AFK in DR. There’s nothing stopping you from playing the game in the cheap full exotics before you do.

But while you’re playing, you can also be blessed by RNG and get at least some nice ascended skin, even one for the collection if it’s a piece of armour.

And once you start playing non-1111-spam PvE but challenging group content like Fractals 49-50, you will be able to gradually equip your alts in almost full Zojja’s armor, plus extra Celestial for ele, and some tanky WvW gear for guardians – like I did.

Mesmer PvP Dailies Incredibly Rare

in PvP

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Mesmers: easily replaced in PvE, portal/veil-bots in WvW, not needed in high-tier PvP. Bugged, nerfed in PvE based on PvP, ignored during encounter design.

The only thing that mesmers can efficiently do is annoy newbies who know nothing about mesmers – until those learn how to either run away or focus and melt the meta shatter.

But according to PvP profession dailies (designed to pull people into playing classes they do not play) in which mesmer appeared once (saying hi to necro), there are too many mesmers in PvP. And not enough turret engies, celestial engies and omnipresent guardians.

So, if we’re sticking to the current profession daily system (while I still think that profession dailies should be randomized per account), can we at least have RNG manually evened out?

Selling dungeon runs?

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/List-of-Common-Controversial-Forum-Topics/first#dungeonselling

15. BAN FOR DUNGEON SELLING

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • If ANet wanted people to sell dungeons, they would’ve made it a game mode.
  • Dungeon sellers should be banned because asking money for playing the game is bad.
  • Dungeon sellers are exploiting the game by soloing/duoing dungeons which were desinged for parties of 5 players.
  • It is not fair that people solo dungeons and get more money for it than normal players.
  • We cannot complete content because people are asking money for it.
  • We cannot find a group because LFG is filled with path sellers.
  • Dungeon sellers are scammers.
  • We will join dungeon sellers in groups and kick them. We know we are right, and that way we’ll bring justice.

[-] Arguments against:

  • Creating separate systems for every single aspect of player interaction is not cost-efficient. ANet has stated that dungeon selling is not against the rules:

Please understand that you are allowed to trade outside of the BLTP – but you will not receive replacements for lost items or gold. The same goes for selling dungeon runs. CS will not suspend or terminate you for selling runs.

  • Dungeon sellers are providing you a service, and as any service, it has a price. This service is not fundamentally different from taxiing people through zones in other games. What dungeon sellers are actually doing is converting their time into gold, while if you buy a path, you’re saving your time by paying gold. It is a win-win deal where dungeon sellers can solo/duo a dungeon by using their skill and enjoy the game, and dungeon buyers get experience for low-level characters and tokens and save time to go and enjoy the game in a different place.
  • There is no rule which says that you cannot solo content if you have enough skill, and as such, soloing cannot be considered an exploit. Dungeons are trivially easy for veteran players in organised groups, so for many, soloing is the only challenging content left in the game. If players do find an exploit in a dungeon and use it to solo content and sell paths, they can and should be reported. GMs are also logging into dungeons like Arah to check if the solo was legit, and real exploiters have been banned by ANet.
  • If people have enough skill to solo a dungeon designed for 5 people, they deserve their reward. If you cannot, then you don’t and either complete in parties or buy paths. This is fair.
  • Dungeon sellers are not blocking your progress. You can complete content since dungeon instances are completely independent from each other. Just go and post your own LFG with your own rules (including no rules at all).
  • You’re drawing wrong conclusions from your observations. LFGs for casual runs fill in minutes, LFGs for popular runs fill in seconds – so obviously, you cannot see them because they’re already doing the dungeon, while dungeon sellers indeed have to wait for customers. Solution: post your own LFG.
  • Any not officially supported player interaction has scam potential, it’s not limited to dungeon selling. If you have been scammed, you should report the person, and they will be suspended/banned, which will make the game a safer place for everyone.
  • If you grieve legit dungeon sellers, you will be the one who is reported and suspended/banned. All players have the right to play the game how they want, but grieving others for their preferences will have consequences:

Basically, you steal, cheat, or be a general baddie and I’m coming with my Account-Focused Stun-Lock Cannon.

This is in regards to the recent increase in players joining a group in a pair; booting the legit players at a boss to troll or holding the party at ransom (Pay or we’ll kick). That’s a behavior we’re not cool with.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • Dungeon sellers are allowed to exist in the game. Actual scamming/exploiting/grieving from any side (seller/buyer) will result in suspension/ban. This policy has recently been enforced and will ensure that dungeon selling service is more secure for both sides.

I’ve been reading the “daily” threads quite a lot recently (as well as many other threads), and now I have a personal list of posters to whom I see little to no point in answering seriously; with the main reason being that they’re repeating the same things that have been said before many times, and especially luring out responses which have already been given all over again.

Probably you have missed those in this 11-page thread, or they have been posted in the other 38-page thread; or maybe you’re just offering as arguments the same assumptions as other people who are not willing to accept my and others’ real experience on which we’re basing our arguments (“could be completed only by those who wander around the world”, “nothing is locked out from you, go and play how you want”).

I started my own thread to post an opinion of why an expansion is needed and why LS should be scrapped and not asking a what if question about 2015.

People are pointing this thread to you because there’s been hundreds of threads on the topic, and that one is the latest active one.

Why do they HAVE to role play in public?

You’ve never seen roleplayers who like to say stuff that should really be in private? You must play at a less populous time or something.

I’m at Piken Square (the unofficial RP server AFAIK), and usually online around 20-21 UTC.

Well, there are many people doing dungeons everyday. At this rate many dungeon runners will have a level80 every 10 days.

I’m getting so many tomes from pvp and dailys already. At this rate, no one will ever need to “even try” to level alt again.

And so: is it a bad thing?

I think it’s safe to assume that people who’re speedrunning 10 paths a day have seen all they ever wanted to see in the game. …or they’re grinding as fast as they can to get the desired item and then go and see the game.

If they want to go out and level, they can. If they don’t, they’ll be happier now – instead of saying “screw it, I want to run dungeons, not kill centaurs in Queensdale!” and never getting alts, they’ll be able to roll new characters with other classes/races/builds for their favourite dungeons or whatever.

More accessible characters = more character slots sold (5 free slots are 3 slots less than available classes) = more gold wasted on equipping alts with gear and skins (including gemstore), as well as bag slots, salvaging and mining tools.

well, there will probably be no point on leveling since it only take a few days of doing dungeon to get another character to lvl80.

  • If it’s your first and only character, you have to level the traditional way. You cannot grind all the dungeons (~100 paths) in a couple of days.
  • If it’s your first and only character, you already have the ability to level it by doing only dungeons. Nothing changes.
  • If it’s your Nth character and you can speedrun ~100 paths in a couple of days, I think it’s really not a problem if you level up your alt faster.
  • With all the NPE restrictions and tomes for PvP, tomes for dailies, tomes for logins there already is little point in leveling alternate characters except for time (and gold) sink – which in threads about “just get rid of levels already” people are talking about. For your 2nd/3rd character of the same class – doubly so; it’s only a hindrance to people who are willing to buy expensive skins to dress up different dolls characters. And speedleveling with crafting will still be superior.

Then we could also ask for ALL experience turned into consumeables.

Why should dungeons get a special treatment .. give us consumeables for hearts and
mobs and whatever .. or just a button to stop getting exp, and then everything will
be put into an exp counter, and a second button will create a consumeable for all
the exp you have collected.

But i don’t know if that would be really a good thing.

People have been asking for it for quite some time: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestion-Experience-Accumulator-for-Alts/

I can see the benefit of that, but it would def have an unfair advantage for people who do not run dungeons, to get such a large xp consumable.

If you run a dungeon, XP is your reward for doing challenging (in comparison) non free-for-all group content. You can already get it for your alt by switching. The only difference is that the consumable makes it more convenient for everyone.

Polls are not allowed on the forums.

IIRC petitions are not, polls are.

1 first poll: You miss the option : I DO NOT WANT ANY MOUNTS.

Agreed. The existing “cosmetics mounts” are essentially toys. I’m fine with toys, but once they’re called “mounts”, even “cosmetic”, we’re opening a can of wurms.

The same for speed bonus: where’s the generic “none”? No, not the “other”. NONE.

It’s like asking whether I would like a chocolate cake or a chocolate cookie, while I want no chocolate at all and instead something with berries.

I know I can block the offending players,

I’ve never met A SINGLE ONE during my year in the game…

Most likely they’re just from the same server as you. If they’re doing offensive stuff – report, they’ll get suspended/banned, as GW2 is vary strict with this kind of stuff; if they’re not removed – then you’ll have to get over it (use other waypoints?) since it’s a multiplayer game, one can’t please everyone, and apparently they’re not writing offensive enough stuff.

"Play How I Want" Is Gone

You don’t have to like it, but if AP is important to you, then great, you’re earning it at a higher rate.

Here we go again, with the same “but now 10!” argument. I was fine with getting some 5-8 AP daily by not going out of my way, and only rarely did I have to go to unplanned places, let alone other game modes. Now I have to go and do that stuff, or I will get no AP at all. And I see that as the middle ground for the average “active player” daily system. It’s been here for several years, so it made sense, right?

And the “no cost transmutation for under 80”? Exploitable by using level 78/79 gear. You know what would be better? Exchange Karma/Laurels for Transmutation Charges . . . seriously, I’m not the only one swimming in pools of this disgusting purple stuff. Needs more love.

Change to “for level 80 characters”, problem solved.

On a side note, karma and laurels can be converted to gold, and charges can be reliably received free of charge from PvE map completion and PvP tracks.

The first one is going to annoy people of the type who have posted in this thread (and myself I will admit) because of limited play windows per day. Making larger amounts for an achievement puts stress on us to perform in the time limit if we want to do them. Making larger amounts and then sticking an “easy out” on it? Just means the majority are going to do the easy out rather than the other one. So why not just leave it as the “easy out”?

This is what I currently suggest:

One more try on improving the daily tasks, PvE only:

  • Daily Nice View
    • View a vista in {map},
    • complete a jumping puzzle in {region},
    • or kill 50 monsters across the world.
  • Daily Resource Manager
    • Gather 4 {resource type} in {map},
    • gather 15 resources across the world,
    • or salvage 50 items.
  • Daily Heroic Deeds
    • Complete 4 events in {map},
    • complete 10 events across the world,
    • or complete a dungeon in explorable mode.
  • Daily Proficient Fighter
    • Apply 20 conditions to enemies,
    • cleanse 20 conditions from yourself,
    • or dodge 20 attacks.
  • Daily Mad Quaggan’s Pick
    • Kill a specific world boss / complete a specific tier of Fractals.

At the moment I think that something like that could please everyone: those who need a daily goal and play just a bit, those who play a lot but prefer specific content, those who hunt for APs, and those who level their 1st characters.

I see it as a fair compromise between different kinds of players. Want it fast? Do the specific short task. Need guidance? Do the specific short task, or a less specific middle task. Want to play how you want? Okay, but you have to play for a considerable time.

This way, the part of people who play just a bit will still be in the zones and will still perform the specific tasks. But those who are contributing to metrics by spending hours online playing how they want are not left out of the system anymore. It’s best of both worlds. Because choice and options.
