Revenant Test Weekeend Questions

It may be a smaller concern, but I’d be curious to know if any character names we use in the beta will be reserved for us or still usable when HoT is released.

I have some of my own made up lore about my characters, so their names are important to me. I’ve got my Revenant’s name picked out already. What I’d hate to have happen is to name the beta Revenant my chosen name, and then have trouble using that same name when HoT is released.

Names are only reserved for an account for 24 hours after character deletion. If you use the char name and the beta char is deleted, as it probably will be at least once between this beta and the expansion, you’ll need to make a regular non beta char to hold that name until the next beta or the expansion.

Thanks for the info – that helped!

Salvage Ascended Items

Orion Templar.4589

@Pax – I see what you mean, but I’m just curious in general why salvaging Ascended items is prohibited in the first place. Was it just to help protect folks from accidentally salvaging it and then getting angry? If so, I’d prefer to have some kind of extra “are you sure” type of warning and be given the option to go ahead and salvage.

@Scribe – agreed – I’d like to get back some of those expensive upgrades and the upgrade extractor is not an attractive option.

To put things another way, I could see some of the logic behind why salvaging Karma items was prohibited. But at the moment I’m not seeing the logic behind why salvaging Ascended items was prohibited.

I’d say play whatever profession you have the most fun with. Even if they aren’t all balanced well against each other at the moment, they are all viable for PvE.

As others mentioned some dungeon groups may be strict or elitist, but there are plenty of other groups that aren’t.

Salvage Ascended Items

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Orion Templar.4589

I’ve got a few Ascended weapons sitting in my bank. One is where I eventually replaced it with a Legendary, and the others are just left overs from builds and playstyles I’m no longer using and I’ve crafted different Ascended weapons or stats to replace them. Those old items represent an investment in materials, and a few of them have sigils on them that aren’t cheap I’d like to recover.

I see that there have been quite a few discussions on this topic in the past. Here are a few examples. Since most of them are quite old, I didn’t want to necro one of these old threads.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestion-Salvaging-Ascended-Gear
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Options-for-unwanted-ascended-armour

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/What-to-do-with-unwanted-Ascended-weapons

Does anyone know if there’s ever been an announcement that the ability to salvage Ascended items is coming in a future patch? Or that it is intentionally never going to happen so we shouldn’t get our hopes up?

Even if we got just a portion of the materials back, it would be better than selling it for cheap to a merchant.

All armor broken -> unrevivable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

this doesn’t solve the scaling problem.

Normally it wouldn’t, but that’s what I’d meant by the sentence below – in other words event scaling algorithms would need to account for the new “unrevivable” state and not include it in event scaling.

An unrevivable (and thus invisible) player would not count toward event scaling.

a possible method for circumventing the broken armor check would be that a perma-AFK player could unequip all of their armor prior to leeching so they wouldn’t be wearing any armor to then get broken that would lock them out of being able to be revived

That’s a good point – I hadn’t originally considered that scenario. I suppose a possible way to address that would be to have the unrevivable state not necessarily be tied to broken armor, but to getting defeated a certain amount of times in a row without active keyboard/mouse input. For example going down 10 times in a row without active input you’d still be revivable and this could account for the legitimate temporary AFK scenarios. But for the bot leecher who went down that 11th time, they’d become unrevivable, the corpse would disappear, and they’d be removed from any local event scaling algorithms.

All armor broken -> unrevivable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

There have been a few threads over the past months about AFKers either causing event scaling problems or leeching by collecting rewards from events they didn’t participate in. In Silverwastes the fort NPCs will often revive a downed AFK player even if the other players ignore the AFK person.

As a possible solution I wanted to suggest that when a player’s armor is all broken that they become unrevivable and their only option is to waypoint out (and hopefully visit an armor repair station.)

From the perspective of the AFK player, this should not be too burdensome a problem if you had a legitimate reason to go AFK for a short period of time such as bio-break, check a crying child, grab some food, etc. The chances of you going down and being revived enough times to both damage and then break all your armor during your short AFK are hopefully slim. From the perspective of the intentional “bot” AFK type of player, they would still be able to leech a few times, but after all armor was broken, they’d be stuck at the downed screen with a message something like “All your armor is broken and you are unrevivable” with the option to waypoint out.

From the perspective of the other players, if someone went down with all armor broken, their corpse would not be able to be interacted with, and it would just fade away after a few seconds, similar to how an enemy corpse fades away after a few seconds. An unrevivable (and thus invisible) player would not count toward event scaling.

This suggestion is provided only in the context of PvE.

Specializations... Killing the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

Being locked into a few specializations seems workable, but I’d still like to see the trait tiers be flexible enough to hold a trait from its own tier or a lower tier.

For example if you had selected a certain specialization and really like two of the Master traits and didn’t really care for any of the Grandmaster traits, you should be able to put one of the Master traits into the Grandmaster slot.

(Slightly off topic, the Elite skill slot should likewise be able to hold a normal Utility skill if the player wants to do that.)

1. Fix the tonic in combat problem
2. Make the Call of the Wild ICD for Clarion Bond sync up with (or be shorter than) pet swap when traited with Windborne Notes and slightly longer than pet swap when not traited
3. Figure out a way to make ICDs like this visible since combat decisions are made on when ICDs are over – as things stand now, the activation of Clarion Bond is not reliable or predictable
4. Make Call of the Wild triggered via Clarion Bond apply after pet swap so the new pet receives the boons

Just tested in the heart of the mists, with fortifying bond, remorseless, clarion bond and zephyr’s speed the pet you swap to will have 4 stacks of might and quickness. So fortifying bond is giving it the measly 1 stack of might from clarions bond but not the fury or swiftness and as I said before no opening strike either.

Noticed this twice in Lion’s Arch earlier today. Not sure if it’s unique to LA or not, but that’s where I happened to be when it happened.

I was jumping around on some crates and then suddenly I was dead. The only option was to waypoint. Then a few minutes later I was in that room with the bunk beds over near the portals to WvW and was jumping around there and suddenly was dead and had to waypoint.

It’s almost like the game thought that jumping caused excess falling damage or something, but in the places where I was there was no falls from height involved – it was just normal jumps.

Dungeon Story's made soloable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Orion Templar.4589

I’m with you OP – story mode dungeons really should have been solo or optional party content from the beginning – similar to how your personal story works where you can have a friend along in your instance if you want, but it’s definitely not required.

Reminds me of a time when I was helping a friend with his first time through story mode Arah. We used LFG to get three random folks with us. At the first cut scene I noticed the random people had voted to kick my friend. When I asked them why they did that, they said it was because he was watching the cut scene. In hindsight I suppose we should have warned them this was his first time and that we’d be watching cut scenes. Still, it made his first Arah experience a bit less than desirable.

Orion Templar.4589

I’ve often wanted a way to know what time of day it is in the game world. Not “server time” from the options, but the actual time of the Tyrian day. Reason being sometimes I want to craft a screen shot from a certain area and know that I’ve got the brightest (or darkest) possible time of day (or night) for making the optimal screen shot.

Same here. This would be a good middle ground. It keeps the confirmation to help avoid accidental salvage of a rare, but keeps the salvage kit active for those that intended to salvage the item and want to keep salvaging others.

More failure: more stats to armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

Personally I don’t like swapping out armor to change a build. Separating traits from attributes is a good thing, but adding more stats to items is a bad thing, assuming the items remain static. In other words, I think this change could be a good thing if all items had flexible stats (like Legendaries already have.)

And to reduce the tedium of manipulating stats on multiple items, they’d want to use this opportunity to add build template functionality.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

Overall the changes sound like they are going in the right direction. The one thing I wasn’t so excited about though is that it sounds like stats are becoming more tied to gear rather than less. I’d rather have the flexibility to change out a build and experiment with stats, but swapping out gear (especially when it is ascended) is not a trivial process. Tying more stats to gear reduces build flexibility in my opinion.

Orion Templar.4589

I’d have to agree with the sentiment here. Was playing last weekend with a friend who was new to the game. We got to a skill point and I told them to go ahead and claim the skill point. I was surprised and disappointed when they couldn’t claim the skill point due to NPE. That ended up being confusing to them that they couldn’t get the skill point, thus going contrary to the purpose of the NPE changes in the first place.

Not being able to sell Ascended items doesn’t bother me, however not being able to salvage them does bother me. For example I’ve got two Ascended weapons I made currently sitting in my bank taking up space because I originally made them thinking I liked a certain build but eventually realized I liked a different build better. I’d love to be able to salvage them and at least get back a few of the materials used to craft them.

When trying to taxi in people for SW for example, I tend to get this quite often. Which means that trying to get the map full takes longer, which means it may not be full enough when doing breach, which means breach has a greater chance to fail.

Please remove the message suppression for LFGs. Thanks!

Agreed – I got hit with the same thing when bringing folks into a Silverwastes map. I’d fill a party and then re-advertise in the LFG tool. I think it was about the 3rd time or so that I saw I was suppressed.

The suppression is supposed to prevent folks from abusing/spamming on chat channels. But that shouldn’t apply for re-posting an LFG advertisement. This needs to change.

True – nothing wrong with the footprints being more subtle as they are. It fits with the Howler / Wolf theme of the weapon. That said, I still think the prints die out a little too quickly. Legendary Howler Bug [merged]

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

It takes a lot to create a Legendary. Howler was my first Legendary and indeed it took me quite a long time to gain world completion, save up the T6 mats, etc. I’m not complaining about that, since earning a Legendary should be a long process that is rewarding when it is completed. But that being said, I must admit that Howler is a bit underwhelming, especially compared to some of the other Legendaries.

To those reading this who have the power to help make changes in this area, please consider making Howler a bit more Legendary. The footprints need to be more distinctive and last a bit longer, the mist effect around the player needs to be more persistent and not disappear at odd times, and any other ideas you may have.

AFK'ers in the Silverwastes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

A few folks have touched on it already, but I’d say that adjusting the AFK kick timer is not necessary. Rather, the rewards/incentives should be adjusted to drive behavior that doesn’t reward map squatting.

I’m not this type of player so I can’t speak from personal experience, but I’d hazard a guess that many of those AFKers at Camp Resolve are doing so in order to keep an eye on the Foothold progress and then join in on Breach/VW when those events start. That way they don’t have to do the “work” of Foothold, while still getting the rewards of Breach/VW. They AFK because getting into a map about to Breach/VW isn’t always easy. Map hopping with the LFG tool is an option, but it’s probably easier just to “save a spot” on a progressing map and sit back and wait for others to advance the meta.

One option might be to have Breach/VW rewards scale with Perseverance. I’m not sure that’s the best though because then people that join a map late into the meta are at a disadvantage for best rewards through no fault of their own.

If a rewards modification isn’t doable or feasible, then I’d say leave things as-is. AFKers at camp resolve may be annoying when you’re trying to join a map with friends, but it’s not a critical problem. Those AFKers aren’t scaling up the difficulty of events, so active players on the map can still see success and rewards.

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

Fixing their mistake of requiring 100 bolts of silk instead the standard 50 would obviously help some.

I’ve often wondered why silk thread needed twice as many bolts of silk as the other time-gated items required for their constituent items. Lowering it to 50 would help, or making bolts only require 2 scraps instead of 3 would help.

I’m never gonna be able to change my armor.

I know what you mean. Having ascended armor be so time-consuming to craft is at odds with the game’s apparent goal of giving a player build flexibility and encouraging folks to experiment. With things as they are now with stats so strongly tied to gear, you need to figure out that build you like because you’ll likely be stuck with it for a while.

Thanks, all – good responses, although I’m still wondering why a destroyed waypoint is still showing on the map as contested. Shouldn’t it simply be removed from the map? I’m not trying to nitpick, but really “contested” is a game mechanic whereby a waypoint is under dispute and can be won back by the players, usually through an event.

@dlonie – you’re right – I’ve used Ebonhawke a lot for a consolidated services area, especially when crafting. Downside there is that if you need the mystic forge for anything, you’re back to LA.

Why is Fort Marriner waypoint contested?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Orion Templar.4589

Orion Templar.4589

When in Lion’s Arch, it would be handy to waypoint between Fort Marriner and Mystic Plaza since most of the services we use are in those two areas. Whenever I’m in Lion’s Arch though the Fort Marriner waypoint is always contested so I use the Bloodcoast Ward waypoint instead and run over to the fort.

Why is the Fort Marriner waypoint contested? Is there some action we can take or event to complete to make it un-contested? Lorewise if the waypoint is damaged or not usable due to what Scarlet did, maybe it could be removed from the map? Having it on the map but contested implies that it is active, but we need to do something to un-contest it.

My apologies if there are existing threads on this – when I search the forums for “Marriner” I get zero results.

Agreed that it is getting tiring that pretty much every time I enter Silverwastes, it is in a map that is in the timeout phase – usually with 10 minutes or more left to go until the foothold phase starts. Always getting put into a map like that is getting old. It gets to the point where using the LFG to find a map where you’re not in timeout becomes nearly the way you must play.

Suggestion: Silverwastes Map Hopping

Orion Templar.4589

I wonder if it would be enough incentive for folks to participate in the foothold events more if your perseverance stacks helped lower the gold costs of items available from the bandit crest merchant. For example if something was crests+much gold, if someone had high perseverance, the cost would be crests+little gold. If the cost normally was crests+little gold, if someone had high perseverance, the cost would just be crests.

Personally I’d also change perseverance so that it didn’t disappear upon leaving the map, but rather would expire when a new foothold cycle started. That would allow for needing to WP out temporarily or getting disconnected.

This would provide incentive to play more foothold events for folks that wanted to save money at the crest vendor. For folks who just like jumping in at the last minute for Breach/Vinewrath, they don’t lose out on any loot – the only thing they don’t get is the lower prices at the crest vendor.

I like the idea. I’d agree that there needs to be incentive to play the foothold event and stay on the map throughout the buildup to breach/vinewrath. If it takes the form of percentage rewards as you mentioned, or scaled up loot for the final bosses depending on foothold participation, either way might help encourage folks to stick around. I’m not a big fan of how the current structure encourages map hopping.

Making new chars as a Veteran of the game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Orion Templar.4589

The whole concept of certain game mechanics unlocking over time is to help prevent a new player from being overwhelmed when first being introduced to the game. By introducing concepts and mechanics slowly, a new player builds a framework of understanding and will likely enjoy the game much more.

That being said, the New Player Experience (NPE) really should only be for new players and not for new characters created by veteran players. My opinion is that if an account has at least one level 80 character on it, when a new character is created, it should not be subjected to any slow unlocks or content introduction trickling. All skills slots, map components, game modes, weapon swapping, etc. should be unlocked for the new character the same as they are for the level 80 character. The player behind the new character is already familiar with the concepts and doesn’t need the NPE at that point.

Or would the statistics be sophisticated enough to realize I spend 90% of my time on two of the characters, 9% of the time on three of them, and 1% of the time on the storage mule?

In other words, the profession “count” in cases like mine would need to be weighted.
