Please differentiate between camps and keeps

It was designed this way to allow more guilds to be able to participate with guild claiming. If you can claim a keep, camp, and tower at the same time then two guilds can claim your entire EBG side. You can already claim 4 things at once (one for each map).

This is really only valid for tiers 1 and 2, where there are many large guilds playing WvW. There are several tiers beneath those that do not have that population nor the number of guilds.

I fully support the original post’s suggestion.

It’s a recruiting problem for your server and nothing more. Why not have that (your idea) during prime time when things are being fought over? Or just open WvW from 6pm EST to 10PM EST then shut it down so no one caps your stuff. Closed on weekends, cuz, you know, things get flipped on weekends a lot. Your prime time is not everyone else’s prime time. WvW is 24/7. Get used to it.

This topic has been brought up before, numerous times. People like to call it “night capping”. But where ever it is night on planet Earth, it is day somewhere else. This was my response from a post 2 months ago:

What do I call it? I call it, “People Playing GW2 WvW When They Want”.

YOUR prime time may not be THEIR prime time. That was my point.

“Low population rules” would pander to…. just who exactly? So points they score aren’t equal in value to points you score? Please explain how that levels the playing field and adds incentive for people to play in the hours deemed unfit for equal points?

Not unless they completely redesign the borderlands again. Before the “can’t activate skills in the air” change, you could get into Air Keep on your druid with no siege at all, using GS jump and druid staff 3. All the way to the inner boss. If you could use your glider, what would the point of siege be? Please don’t ask for invisible walls- that would just muck up existing siege and create more problems than it would solve, like blocking treb, cata and balista projectiles.

I had voted against it earlier (not that it counted) but seeing it in use, I agree that it is a good change. You can still rez the dead when the flow of battle passes far enough and you get out of combat, but not on the front lines. It brings in play strategic use of AoE to keep the enemy in combat to prevent them from rezzing anyone.

Defenders are almost extinct because its too time consuming to get around the new map. Look at the desert bl’s and notice something common about them? Both south towers are rarely, if ever, owned by the home team. It’s easier and faster to run to Cursed Shore from LA than it is to run to a south tower from spawn in the new bl’s. This is NOT conducive to active and fun play on defense.

Jayne.9251 hit the bull’s eye with her post above. How does/did Anet WvW devs NOT see this? I wish I could +1,000 that post so they’d see it.

Sich.7103 also nailed it above, as ScionKai.4907 mentions and brilliantly expands on. I think the dev team should have gone to Wales and toured every Edwardian castle there, then duplicated as much of that terrain as possible for WvW borderlands.

Here are my responses to the original questions:
1. How often do you play defence? Always, sometimes, occasionally? Never?!
On Alpine, I always started in home bl and many times never left until I had to log out, or got called to EBG. Always had a lot of action because the terrain was conducive to fighting, and defending our WP’s was a priority. On Desert, I’ll try to recapture what we don’t own if there’s a group big enough to take the keeps, or get a friend or two for smaller objectives. If no one is available and shrines and camps need to be re-taken, I’ll go do that.
2. Which maps do you defend? EB, BL, both?
Mostly home bl, then opponent’s bl for camps and towers. Opponents keeps if we have a full party or more.
3. Briefly, how do you spend your time on each map you play? Do you look after a whole map, small group of objectives, just stay and guard one place?
4. Are you usually solo or part of a team when playing defensively?
Depends on the people I’m running with. I have a friend I’ve played with since Prophecies and we like to see if we can take objectives with just the two of us. Skirmishes are a blast if and when we can find them. We’ve won some 2v5 fights and lost some 2v1 fights. We’ve driven off attackers while defending a structure, which is always a hoot. If some guildies are going to hit an enemy’s BL, we’ll jump in with them and flip as much as we can to draw defenders to the map. It’s difficult to look after the whole map if the enemy is smart. Defending Air and Fire keeps can be difficult unless you have a lot of people, simply because as mentioned above they are not designed well. Rampart, or Earth Keep, is easier to defend. Because of the WP, it’s easier to get people to come defend if needed. Solo defense of the keeps is near impossible because if the attacking group is large enough, by the time you see swords on the objective, run 4 miles to cover a quarter mile as the crow flies to reach the objective, you still have a huge area to search for where the target is getting hit. If no defensive siege had been built previously, by the time you find out where their catas or trebs are located, its too late to build if you’re solo.

Kills are the number of enemy kills a server has made for the week hence that value would be part of the score now. Deaths are how many times that servers players have died.

Well it is called character progression not account progression.. Look at it like this.. PVE’ers have to play each profession to unlock the elites.. They can’t use one toon and farm items to unlock them for other toons..

They could if they wanted to before the nerf. Many did, such as myself and several guild mates. I don’t like PvE much and would rather spend my play time in WvW. If PvE players complained SO MUCH about mapping in WvW that it got removed, Anet can throw us WvW players a bone.

Did you but HoT? Make a Revenant? Go through aaaallllll the hearts in all the zones to level him/her up? WHAT?!?! You used TOMES!?! Where’d THOSE come from?!?!?

I agree with OP. What the heck else are we supposed to do with all the heroics? Buy superior siege, of course. What do we do with badges? Buy regular siege. Since both currencies are used only in WvW, why does only one count for the daily? When we had to spend BOTH to get sup siege, it would trigger the daily. Now it doesn’t because we’re only using heroics. C’mon… if some streamer chick can get Anet to fix an issue she has because she’s not paying attention to what she’s doing, then this should get changed as well.

Yes. You can only use the free waypoint at your “spawn keep”. For example, if you are red, your spawn keeps are red garrison, red ebg keep, blue lava keep, and green air keep. For any other keep you need a guild to claim it and someone who can add an emergency waypoint.

Who thought this was a good idea? Count me in the group that would like the Way Points to go back to like we had them for 3 years- only pop up in tier 3 keeps, usable by whomever owns the keep. This was the reason for SO MANY fights in the WvW of the past. Now we don’t have that reason any more.

While defending Rampart last night, I saw some enemies who had broken through outer building siege on the floating mortar platform that is only accessible by using the teleport pads. Why are these usable by the enemy? Shouldn’t the enemy be unable to use them until they capture the objective?

Starter zone bosses like Maw and Shadow Behemoth (which already had a make-over) shouldn’t be made any more difficult because they are in starter zones. You really don’t want to discourage people in starter zones by constantly downing them.

I’ll cast my vote for Claw of Jormag.

Actually, I really do. I remember fire elemental at release, and I remember how hard it was. It let me know that this big boss was a real boss, and that real bosses existed, and that I had reasons to come back to the zone later.

In the process of leveling at the time I really enjoyed that something so nasty existed even right there at the start. It provided me with a defeat that I was able to look back on later with my eventual victory and go “Yeah. I did it. I’m more powerful now” in a system that doesn’t do that a lot because of level scaling.

I’m not saying i disagree with level scaling. I think it’s a good system that GW2 needs. I do, however, disagree with the idea that just because a massive towering world boss is present in a starter zone it should be easier. A challenging world boss in a starter zone is a great way for new players to stumble upon veterans and interact with them, and a good way to create a miniature grudge match with the environment.

As long as it’s just one world boss in the whole zone, I think it’s valuable that it should be on par with any other world boss.

While reading your post, I remembered SB from beta, and my own first encounter with the Fire Ele, and I have to agree with you. Being on TS with my guildies and not realizing we’re mirroring a movie when we were shouting to each other, “LOOK at the SIZE of that thing!” and having to give each other sensual body rubs many times over before the end of the event. Good times. Gave you a plus 1.

I would like to see videos on how to solo capture camps. Different professions.

I have taken borderland south west camp with necro by first approaching from south west, not all are aggroed.

I have fighted and gave-up in the same camp with condi PU mesmer after 30+ minutes of aggro/reset fest. This camp has reset places so close to the camp that with my condi mesmer play style I could not avoid resets – and respawns.

I cannot take camps with power greatsword mesmer.

I cannot take camps with warrior. In borderland north camp, it is nothing but interrupt fest and my warrior dies.

My staff ele dies in shrines as well.

I test professions/builds by solo capping camps. If I cannot cap a camp, the profession/build is bad. I’m just casual, non-pro player – I think there is nothing wrong in that. Condi PU mesmer is best I have for solo capturing camps.

Note: I don’t have wvw abilities for guard killing / defending – that is +20% damage, -20% incoming damage. Before taking the abilities, I would like to see videos and try again.

I flip tier 3 camps solo on my zerker GS mesmer all the time. It’s all about agro. I don’t have the capability (that I’m aware of) to take a video of it. I concentrate on the Cabalists first, since they’re the ones that will down me if I over-agro. And agro is key- you want to make sure you don’t pull the entire camp to you at the same time or you’ll be overwhelmed. Take the trait that gives you might when you or your clones use spatial surge (Imagined Burden under Domination), start with Phantasmal Berserker and then immediately hit Mirror Images, then watch the might stacks pile up. Using Berserker gear all around, with maybe a little Valk mixed in, really helps. With might stacks, I hit around 3500 and change for attacking power, sometimes a little more. Food for extra power helps as well. I’m a sylvari, so sometimes I use Take Root elite to give the NPC’s something else besides me or my clones to attack, sometimes I take Gravity Well (chronomancer elite).

A PU condi build doesn’t work as well because the NPC’s don’t attack near as much as a player would, nor do they move as much, so your big condis (confusion and torment) don’t do as much damage as you need them to if you want to flip the camp. It IS doable, but it takes more than twice as long as a zerker build to accomplish.

I don’t play my warrior as much in GW2 as I did in GW1, so I cannot give you advice there, but Cerby.1069 could probably give you build advice. I’ve seen the dude play his warrior and just about solo Overlook. He and I may not always agree about stuff on these forums, but I gotta give him props on his warrior, ‘cuz if someone else told me what I’ve seen with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed them. (Now don’t get a big head, Lux! lol)

With staff ele, it’s all about the rotation. I’ve seen youtube videos of eles, and the important thing to watch is the rotation of skills. Again, be careful of agro.

My guardian/DH is in ascended vitality power toughness gear with PTV trinkets, GS/longbow, and he’s fun to take camps with, but too slow to run around with. Sometimes go with Sword/focus, which is a lot easier than GS because of the blinds and blocks. Power food all around.

Ranger in exotic berserker armor, PTV trinkets, taking fern dog for regen and bear for condi removal, power food or seaweed food for movement damage bonus. Let the pet agro then pull the pet back, pulling the NPC’s, Longbow with piercing trait, GS swap, or if druid go staff/GS or staff/longbow.

For me at least, it’s not about whether I can flip a tier 3 camp, it’s how fast. If you over agro, do your best to run away to break and reset, then try again. You can do it, just watch your agro.

When a Mesmer turns us into a moa our whole class is unusable.

Yes, but you have moa skills (or tuna under water) which when you get used to them you can still kill another player. Done it in both PvP and WvW. The question is still unanswered.

Agreed. Really hoped it would have come with HoT. Armor issues? I don’t care about armor. All armor could be hidden and never show on my tengu, as long as I got 6-8 dye channels and some cool character models that are already in game. Outfits don’t work on tengu? Don’t care as long as I get lots of dye channels for my plumage, cool choices for my head plumage and beak and tail. C’mon people, think outside the box here- the possibilities are endless. Don’t care about story. Heck, make it an adventure bought from the gem store like the minis that came with a quest for a level 80 character. The Tengu toon slot comes with a character slot and a back story for your main or an alt to go on a mini adventure to find/rescue/assist a tengu that then becomes your character in the new slot. They only need to fill one zone on the map, add a little back story, and bam- lots of character slots generating revenue for Anet.

This is SO not an issue that it boggles the mind. That Anet made it so just….well… my flabber was gasted. Check out the bugs forum. Look at all the progress blocking bugs that should have a higher priority that an issue that can be so incredibly easily avoided, as Coldtart.4785 and fishball.7204 have mentioned above. No one in my original guild (playing together since Prophecies) had even heard of…. whoever that person was that mentioned it while streaming. And whoever that person was- WHY OH WHY aren’t they raging about legendary crafting, or WvW waypoints?

If this is a problem for you, please don’t ever use a screwdriver. You might accidentally stick it in your eye.

omg, Anet, c’mon!!! You picked a bugged dynamic event to tie into crafting a legendary and didn’t make sure the bug was fixed? You didn’t check for bugged events before planning out this legendary journey!? I’m so happy I don’t like the skin on that GS and won’t have to put up with this. I’m seeing more and more why one of the guild founders of my WvW guild, who used to buy gems for both he and his wife on a monthly basis to support his WvW habit, has left this game and uninstalled. Heck, his name doesn’t even show up in the guild log any more for when he would promote people or order upgrades, so I suspect he even deleted his toons. AND HE WAS OUR FRICKIN’ SCRIBE!!!

I’m on record as saying megaserver is coming to WvW just like it’s used on EotM. Ever see a guildie’s yellow dot in WvW and mouse over it? “Player is on another instance of this map.” Anet will not kill the golden goose yet- they want your gem cash for transfer fees right up until the day megaserver happens. Then sooooo many people will rage-quit because they spent cash to transfer and it will mean nothing at that point.

The waypoint rule change has been extremely confusing to players, but I understand the way around it is to use the emergency waypoint tactic.

…. which is locked behind scribing, level 350, and is no where near comparable with the old system. From the wiki:
- Assembling Schematic: Emergency Waypoint will take 12 hours or 1200 Resonance.
- Once activated, spawn an incontestable waypoint at your objective, near the tactivator, which lasts for 1 minute
-This Improvement has a 3:00 installation time and a 15:00 cooldown.

Edit to add: It’s also soulbound, so if your guild’s scribe is online (big if) and not already there, he or she faces quite a battle to get from spawn through the attackers and into the contested objective, THEN the three minute installation time. Good luck with that.

A better idea would be to give us the WP’s on our HOME borderland, and if we take a keep on an enemy BL, it wouldn’t be built until the keep upgrades.

I didn’t think you could “Leave the Mists” while in combat or downed. Almost ashamed to admit I tried it just now, and yeah… I popped up in LA dead, after leaving while downed. This should really be fixed.

Has the “kicked off after firing” bug that has plagued those turrets since day 1 been fixed? I sure hope so- it’s the leading cause of NO ONE EVER manning them.

Returning player. Why is WvW dead anyway?

While the new borderlands are very pretty to look at in some areas (but not others), and have unique towers and tower lords, the main thing people don’t like about them is the maze-like feel and constricting passages, or “choke points”, as well as a complete lack of open space for any type of large scale fighting. Well, I take that back. There IS a large open space, but it’s on top of what used to be knows as “Bay”, now known as Undercroft, or “Fire Keep”, but there’s almost no reason to go there unless you want to take the shrine located there, and it’s not really flat enough for a good fight. In Alpine BL, we had lots and lots of nice flat land to fight in. Even the south towers had a lot of nice flat area in front of them where many battles would be fought, with enemies coming from their spawn point to attack the tower, or on their way to hit Hills or Bay. None of those types of places exist in the new BL’s.

However, my server has been fluctuating between tier 4 and 5, and we see a LOT of action in the desert borderlands. Groups of 5-10 have been trying with mixed success to take the Air and Fire keeps (old Hills and Bay), and because of the sheer size of those keeps, they are sometimes difficult to defend. Larger groups have better chance of success, of course, but if you and 2 others manage to take the Air or Fire keeps while a few are defending it, it’s quite a battle. If more defenders show up, of course, you’ll get stomped. And not all of this action is in “prime time”, which is nice.

There are still problems with the waypoints that no one likes. Example- in your OWN BORDERLAND you cannot use the waypoints in old Hills or Bay locations, meaning you have to run from the very top of the map (where the Orb used to be) or Rampart, which is the old Garrison, provided it’s not contested. And because of the maze-like feel, the run back is never a straight line, like we were used to in Alpine. If you take Air or Fire keeps on an opponent’s borderland, you get the waypoint right away.

Then there’s the Oasis event in the middle of the map that happens every few hours. If an enemy completes the event on your map, a big laser hits all the gates on opponent held keeps and towers and damages them a certain percentage based on the level of upgrade at the time. Non upgraded gates will get blown wide open, whereas reinforced gates get damaged to 75% health. In non-prime time, if the Oasis event gets done multiple times, you may visit your home borderland to find fully upgraded towers with gates having 90% damage. Many people will claim that this event causes lag (lots of threads about it), but I’m a firm believer that it’s the stability change and population increase (as explained in some older posts that you can google) that causes the lag at the Oasis event.

Then there’s the whole scribe thing. Remember when you used to claim a camp for +5? Not only is that behind the HoT paywall, it’s also behind a scribe grind that is insanely expensive, unless you have an entire guild dedicated to helping your guild’s scribe reach that level. And woe to you if you have one scribe your guild helps reach level 400 scribe and then that person falls in love with another game and is sick of waiting for Anet to fix everything they broke and then LEAVES this game, completely uninstalling. Bye-bye scribe! Now your guild has to level up another scribe, and that’s not cheap. It happened to my main WvW guild.

TL;DR- Anet messed up.

Ah, ok, I see what you mean. If X number of players are camped in a contested objective, not all of them would be able to log into their toon that is camped there. I kinda like that idea.

Dawdler has a point though. If you can’t WP into an objective that’s contested, you’d swap to an alt that’s parked there. Rather defeats the purpose of contesting a WP, doesn’kitten Although I do agree that if the map isn’t full, I would like to log directly into WvW. Maybe that’s why Mike O’Brien thinks “no one just plays WvW”?

I haven’t played my necro much and haven’t unlocked reaper, but I have a question for those that have, and maybe this isn’t the right place in the forum to ask, but I figured it would be seen by a dev faster here than somewhere else.

We’d had a reaper running on our desert BL that claimed to be critting for over 100k, and a guildie playing his ranger was one-shotted by said reaper. He says the reaper stopped showing up in his combat log as well. Is this possible, or is it some kind of hack?

Thanks, Dawdler. I wish someone would have told me before I wasted my money at Best Buy. Even worse, they kept the box after it was installed so I couldn’t even return or exchange it without losing half the price on a “restock” fee.

I tried to contest the WP by hitting a gate and a guard, and nope- WP stayed uncontested. When our Rampart was hit, the WP became contested, but apparently the always open WP seems to be just in Undercroft (or Fire Keep as its sometimes called).

I’m going to cast my vote against the ban on rezzing the dead while in combat. Why? Because if you stop attacking to rez the dead, your contribution to the fight diminishes for the duration of the rez. If more than one stops attacking to rez a dead player, that’s more than one not attacking, and further, puts them in danger of AoE because they’re static. In the Alpine borderlands this may have worked, but with the desert BL’s and their freled-up (Farscape reference) WP placement and bugs, it will just discourage people further than it already does. Unless, of course, you let the home team use the home team WP’s like we were used to for 3 years. Well, no. Not even if you fix the WP issue, for the reason I mentioned.

What if anet replace EB with eotm map?

No. If WvW players wanted to play on that horrible map, they would be there. They’re not- they’re in EBG. Don’t confuse the upleveled karma trainers who avoid fights with real lvl 80 WvW players geared in ascended armor and trinkets who actively seek them out.
