I doubt GW2 will be FTP like SWTOR.

SWTOR failed because they tried to survive on box sales and subscription only.

They panicked and came up with their free to play model on the fly. GW2 was developed with the current model in mind and was developed quite well around it.

The VIP would only be an optional subscription model which offered additional benefits you would usually find in the cash shop.

My guess is that everything listed in the VIP bundle will also be sold separately in the cash shop, but the benefit for being VIP is that you save more gems and after 12 months of being a VIP you gain a precursor (which may not have the same value once we start crafting precursors).

I still don’t like the idea, like you said, the system works, you buy what you want if and when you want (disregarding temp stuff obviously) would you save gems? Probably, but would you really? You’re getting stuff you don’t mind but at the same time you’d never buy separately.

It’s the same thing with phone contracts, mine doesn’t have a subscription/mandatory fee which means the calls are more expensive, but I spend 4 times less in a year window.
For me these kind of tactics just feel dishonest, and then you have the precursor…

Before anything, an item to have any value in an MMO has to be rare, that means MOST people can’t have it.
Precursor crafting is said to be on the works for over a year, I think it will never come, that means this VIP system would be the only sure way for one, need I say more?

And I don’t even care about legendary weapons, I got a precursor dropped from Jormag that I could use in 2 chats and I just sold the thing, they just look silly, the ultimate prove people don’t mind looking like fabulous clowns just to get some sense of entitlement.

By the way, a much better way for a sure precursor would be 500 laurels, just saying Anet, quick and simple.

for some players yes and the VIP package would be optional, just like everything in the cash shop.

Just going to add for all the VIP haters since I actually have an account on all 3 regions for GW2, the VIP is bought via the gem store and is not a subscription. There are ways to get a days worth of VIP through in-game means and a 30 day VIP card for a fairly large amount of gems (relatively speaking, since China gem store prices are very different due to a different currency). You could literally farm dungeons for your VIP. There’s seriously nothing wrong with it. My China account has no VIP and my friends tell me not to bother since I’m a PvP/WvW player, as it only benefits PvE (porting to friend, insta bank access, bonus XP gain etc). Nothing else is restricted except sending in-game mails.

Imagine farming dungeons for VIP for a year just to get a precursor. That’s what you’re worried about. F- me

it all seemed like PvE buffs you could currently buy in the Gem Store. Just bundled up for a larger savings.

The VIP option will have ZERO negative effect on your game play, but hey, act like a child and quit over something that will only benefit you by giving Anet another source of revenue for future development.

If non-vips can sell a maximum of 5 items a day on the TP, it has a huge impact on everyone’s gameplay.

Look, I understand that some people would like to pay a monthly fee.

But if not being a vip means that some parts of the game get heavily restricted (5 trades on the TP), it can’t be possibly fair. That’s the kind of thing that you find on the worst free to play games; in such games the addict user is forced to spend money just to have a playable game.

So I think it’s understandable if players are worried.

Where are you seeing a limit of 5 trades a day on the TP? I did a search and could not find anything official on that.

That vip package would be perfect for the game being completely F2P. Seriously, I think we are going to see a f2p version. Not a bad idea, look how well Swtor is doing financially after going f2p with sub option.

For the love of all that’s holly, don’t make this a SWTOR.

I used to play it, quite like it, then I quit after 90 days, even before I reached lvl 50 (cap) there, why?
Numerous reasons, but keeping it short, their F2P is basically a demo, you are limited in every single way, you even have a cap on how much coin you can have, you can’t hide your head gear, you can’t even wear a basic title which over there is a much bigger deal since it blends with your name.

In conclusion, I’ve been playing GW2 since the first week and I’m online most days, I like it the way it is, and so do many other players.

I doubt GW2 will be FTP like SWTOR.

If they are pulling this, they must be really desperate. Same happened to SWTOR when they realized they had no success.

or they developed the idea while working on the Chinese model and realize that it could also work here…

*why would anyone care if another person is VIP?

Does them spending money irritate you so much that you would quit?*

Or maybe it’s the idea that after spending money for a year they will get a precursor (not even a full legendary).

Ohh, someone is willing to spend money to support the game… bad man!

None of the benefits seem like it would have any impact on PvP except maybe the precursor… after a full year of being VIP then doing the work to get the precursor crafted… oh and we maybe crafting precursors soon… so that whole VIP bonus drops in value.

Grow up, let people spend their money to be VIPs and stop being jealous of the Jones.

If Anet add VIP in any form I’m done for good. I own a collectors edition and buy gems so spending money obviously doesn’t bother me but add PTW and I’m out.

That’s fine, I bet the number of people that actually quit over something like this will look miniscule compared to the amount of people who will pay for the VIP/Subscription.

The VIP option will have ZERO negative effect on your game play, but hey, act like a child and quit over something that will only benefit you by giving Anet another source of revenue for future development.

little hint about making threats, people who spend money on this game regularly like you claim would actually welcome the ability to gain benefits and a discount by adding a subscription.

Let them play another game. GW2 is BTP which is why I played GW and why I play GW2 I bought gems to support the game and avoided the watchwork pick specifically because it’s borderline ptw.

Little hint, I don’t make idle threats

who cares? The amount of money you would have spent over your life in this game is nothing compared to the revenue Anet would gain with this VIP model.

This. I also came here because everyone was equal and gems were only for those who wanted visual items.

However, teleporting to friend, limited trading, booster? This is a thinly veiled (is it even veiled?) cheap game. No, just no.

You do know that the cash shop sells more than just visual fluff?

It’s not about being jealous of others paying, it’s about disliking a business model and just seeing people around with that icon. It’s irritating. Also, trade limit?!

a business model which will only have a positive impact on you.

That money people are going to spend each month to be a VIP (guessing it is a subscription) will go back into development.

The free development you are going to get will outweigh the game braking visual discontinuity of seeing a small icon above a players head.

Mount Debate

It’s an absolute waste of resources. Add that to your list please.

how is this a waste of resources if they sell mounts in the cash shop? The Celestial Steed, World of Warcrafts first cash shop mount, earned them over 2 million dollars in the first four hours of release. GW2 does not have the amount of players that WoW did, but it should not take long for the first cash shop mount in GW2 to start earning a positive return.

Mounts could easily just be a 25% speed buff. This would give every class the option of having a passive 25% speed buff while out of combat. You get hit while on the mount and it knocks you off.

We currently have the riding broom. This functions perfectly as a mount, has the right restrictions, the only thing it lacks is a 25% speed buff.

So please explain how mounts would be a waste of resources when we already have one in the game?

WoW already HAD mounts in game. This game does not. The Pro-mount people NEVER want to admit that adding mounts is not as easy as a new weapon skin. There would be a whole lot of modeling, etc. to be put into the game.

Also, I NEVER WANT A SPEED BOOST OVER 33% – mounts with 100%? NO!!!! A.Net said that speed boosts, in game, were capped at 33%.

Mounts would just make this game chug even more, than it already does. Until more game engine optimizations are in game, mounts would really make this game unplayable.

I enjoy a world were there are no mounts. It is a nice breath of fresh air. There are plenty of games with mounts.

We already have a mount in the game. The Witches Broom works perfectly as a mount. The only thing it lacks is a 25% speed buff.

The only legitimate reason they should focus a bit on mounts is to earn revenue. Mounts are a big seller in MMOs, even if the mount only gives you a 25% speed buff over base speed.

Not every class has access to a trait or skill for a passive 25% speed buff, mounts would even this field out at least for players out of combat. I don’t think we need anything faster than 25%, any faster and it would be nearly impossible for some classes to catch an enemy player in WvW

The witches broom is not a true mount – it is like the costume brawls and it is called a toy. Try riding it outside of town – not that useful – it is like the kites, etc. just some fluff.

All professions have some type of speed buff, even if it is temporary. That is part of the balance in the game. You want to be a Mesmer and have a speed buff, well use that off-hand focus.

As I said, many times, the business model here is B2P – that means getting all the money they need by selling the game. The rest , like the CS, is just gravy on top. One doesn’t need ANYTHING from the CS to play the game. If the mounts were CS only, many players would start calling this game P2W!

The only feature the Witches Broom lacks is a speed buff.

it is not considered a mount. A.Net already stated that.

Once you put mounts in, it is the slippery slope. Then people want 100% speed buffs, then fighting off of mounts, etc. It is similar to the A.Net EULA rule which states that anything that would give a player a competitive advantage, no matter how small, is not allowed. I think they may be using this rule for themselves.

Other than the speed buff, what aspect of the riding the broom is not like a mount?

The animation is there, the dismount button is there, the inability to fight while mounted is there, you even get knocked off when you enter combat.

What feature, other than the lack of speed is the riding broom missing? Everything they need for creating mounts already exists in the game. They just need to tweak it a bit and create additional mounts for people to access in game and in the cash shop.

I don’t care about mounts for personal use, but I know Anet can make money if they start selling them in their cash shop.

Mounts cannot have speed buffs for one reason: ANet considers character speed as part of their profession balancing.

Whether or not your class has a passive speed boost trait/signet, what do you give up for a set of speed/traveler runes, how long your swiftness lasts and the cooldowns on your swiftness-granting skills, and what weapons/utility traits you have to equip to gain access to swiftness – all of that is to dictate who gets a fight when and what they get to bring to the fight (yes, this is a WvW balancing issue); introducing mounts with a built-in 25% speed boost throws all of that out the window and it wouldn’t just be whipping up some models and adding animations, it would also require a rebalancing of every class.

and those classes will retain their signature speed buff while in combat.

But especially for WvW every class should have access to a 25% speed buff while out of combat.

It’s a waste of resources. Fix everything else then let’s talk mounts that are purely cosmetic and fun (who wouldn’t want to be a human though riding on top of a horse killing centaurs with a halberd?).

But hey, I’m down for mounts…in like maybe 2 years.

You can never fix everything in an MMO and games like this do not just have one group of people working on every aspect of the game.

Fix bugs… ok you don’t need 3D artists for that, you probably don’t even need animators. You do need coders but even then coders are split up into groups which specialize in parts of the game.

The only other reason I can think a leader wants to retain “ownership” is so they can be complete jackholes to the people in “their” instance and be immune to being kicked.

  • Keep armor as it currently was
  • Add new Runes which not only included all previous options, but now also included Infusion Immunity.

No need to create a whole new level of gear to grind that offers a whole new tier of power.

So have sellable content on the Trade post as a way to gate? Or is these runes only obtainable via dungeon and are soulbound?

They could be soulbound loot from the fractal dungeons or craftable in the forge (then bind on pick up).

1. Who here, still come to forums but play the game much less?
Me

2. When did you start playing less?
Monday, the 19th

3. Why / What caused the decline in time spent?
For me it was a culminations of a series of events since patch 15/11
A: Ascended gear and a “design-lazy” new mechanic called “Agony”
A: The great disappointment in the “significant quality of life” ranger patch notes.
B: A boring and broken event.
C: The welfare precursor fiasco.
D: Arenanets move away from open world pve towards a more contained single point of entry dungeon. The fractals dungeon by itself is not a bad idea, but making it the only viable way to progress is what ultimately broke the camels back for me.

Not one of the mentioned points by itself would have bothered me much, except “D” maybe, but all of them combined was the deal-breaker for me.

./shrugs

I do feel a bit of bait and switch. One of the things I hated in WoW was constantly reaching max level, spending months obtaining and buffing the best gear, then a new patch comes along and starts that whole treadmill over. I did this until mid BC and quit, grinding is a lazy, uncreative way of creating “content”.

The new Ascended gear I can ignore for now. It won’t make a huge difference if I don’t run the instances that require it. I’m wonder what impact it will have on WvW.

Honestly, I wish WvW was set up in a manner like PvP. Set equipment, it would allow all players to interact on the same level and minimize the cries to nerf players when some of it is the difference in level and equipment.

because it was rushed.

just like the LFG system, it was rushed as well which is why it is so poor. From what I understand they feel it is good enough and have more important things to work on for both accounts.

Are Warriors Boring?

There is a reason why patch after patch the warriors are the least touched.

It is because they are a straight forward class. Yes they can be a bit boring, but they have good survivability and are not hit by constant tweaks to their specialized skills (because everything about them is straight forward).

"Buy More Save More" pricing for gems?

The reasoning for no volume discount with buying gems with real money is simple and old information that is buried somewhere out there in the plethora of data of the internet. So I won’t be trying to find it. But it was done so that players didn’t have to feel they had to buy the largest amount of gems if all they needed was a small amount in order to get the best price. So you just buy what you need at the time you need it. And that makes perfect sense to me as in other games I always felt obligated to buy the largest volume which made deciding to buy a hard choice.

This is probably the best reason I have read. Takes the pressure off buying a lot at one time. I usually buy 50 dollars at a time once a month anyway so never thought of how much easier it would be for someone to buy a smaller amount just to fit their needs.

The only item I will be spending money on are level 80 transmute stones. I never seem to get those as rewards and have 2 80s and a couple of others approaching.

But knowing ANet the sale will be on Keys, Buffs, and social clothing.

Very yes. I might even consider purchasing some gems if they’d do a sale on bank tabs.

bought all mine. Hope they add more.

Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

illgot.1056

I came to GW2 because I read that the grind would be for appearances, not stats.

Ascended will take A LOT of time and A LOT of money. That is not why I came to GW2.

But it will be the reason I leave as I hate grinding for stats, then buying more crystals just to retain my personal appearance.

Easy solution to the Ascended Gear problem #2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

illgot.1056

I honestly try not to think of Ascended gear and how much it will cost me to craft it all.

I am hoping that by the time my warrior gets to 80 (already have multiple 80s I dumped due to a gear grind) things will be different.

Ignoring Ascended Tier

I’m only going to get the quiver. I almost have enough gold to purchase the mats. Honestly, I’m only getting this quiver because of the look, not because it’s ascended. ANet could’ve made it exotic and I still would’ve went for it.

I’m going to ignore the rest though. I’m definitely not going to grind FotM and hope for the rings to drop.

Hopefully ANet either scraps the idea of ascended gear or adds other ways of getting it. Otherwise I’m going to continue running in my exotics.

what would suck is if they put a quiver or other back items on the cash shop. I am honestly shocked there are no current back skins on the cash shop, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the fact that there are so few in game.

Karka Champion and the rich Ori node

Make the Orichalcum node corrupted until the champion is down. Fixed.

Rich nodes shouldn’t be harvested without at least killing a veteran or jumping a few rocks.

good idea

How are we supposed to make gold now?

Buy gems and convert it into gold from the Black Lion Trading Company. Thank you for supporting Arenanet!

at such a horrible rate.

I just buy and flip items on the market honestly. It slow and since I do not know a lot about end game crafting, it’s mostly gear I know people use.

You can already buy just the one you want by converting gems to gold and buying it off the trading post.

do you realize how expensive that will be to buy all the dyes?

The whole gem to gold conversion holds no value at the current rate of exchange. I doubt it ever will.

right but they do not need to discount their gems if you buy more.

They are not expecting people to buy hundreds of dollars worth of gems. They are hoping people buy at least 10-15 dollars worth a month.

I can’t think of any cash shop that discounts their currency if you buy more.

They own the market for such items, they have no need to give us discounts on something where there is no other competition.

I am never going to buy random reward items like event chests, random packs of dyes, random mini-pets, or buy keys to open said items.

I will pay to a lot to unlock all dyes on a specific character.

I will pay a lot for nice armor skins.

I will pay a lot for nice weapon skins.

I will pay a lot for specific pets.

By a lot I am speaking somewhere around 50-100 dollars. I am sure I am not the only person completely turned off by gambling and refuses to waste their money.

Please stop trying to nickle and dime everyone to death and give us customers who refuse to gamble a chance to spend large amounts of money on one or two items.

Its more than just clothes…they need a proper wardrobe re-design, like LOTRO has…who the hell wants to buy clothes for one outfit that cant be changed and is lost if you upgrade your armour/clothes…….Turbine tried that with DDO and it was a massive failure.

With the wardrobe you get 3 or 4 free slots per character, 20 account wide slots for clothing, extra space for both character and account can be bought from the gem store.
Honestly, why havent you Anet guys done your own research and why dont you have this done already……clothing options are the biggest sellers behind actual content in MMO’s……its blindly obvious that behind the pretty graphics you havent put much effort into this game at all.

they did their research and found they can leach more money off you by forcing you to give up one outfit for another which makes you constantly need to…

A) Grind out multiple of the same set of gear to have more than one look

B) Purchase the same sets over and over when you want to just change your look

C) It was easier than working in a layering system much like LoTR system uses

Some of the choices I think were just reactions to a knee jerk change in how they originally planned things.

It will probably get worked out better next month.
