Thanks for those who are looking forward to the event, and who post to say they are. For those who are posting up bile-filled negativity, I’d like you to step back and think about the situation: We’re having a Halloween festival in a timeframe when many, many players thought there would not be one. Dire “the sky is falling” commentary isn’t appropriate. Rude “You got nothing” comments have no place here.

We’re offering to join community events because they’re fun, and our joining in supports those marvelous people and guilds and groups who put their time and effort into creating such events for the community at large. This is in no way a case where we’re “doing nothing” when the team is presenting an entire festival for you at a time the company is also launching an expansion pack for our game.

This thread presents positive and encouraging new information, and I’d ask you to join in the spirit of the thread and not make rude, negative, or nasty comments. I mean, replying is optional, and thoughtfulness seems a simple thing to ask.

The problem isn’t the event. The problem is that instead of admitting that there won’t be anything new halloween themed content the company is constantly avoiding this topic, thus generating false hope.

If there won’t be anything new this year, just say it so people can move on. I think everyone appreciates the work you put into HoT and will understand why it has to be this way, but now it just feels shady.

I just hope next year my favorite event since the early days of GW1 will not be ignored again, for the 3rd year in a row :/

What is the point of these threads when HoT is coming out soon and the balance will be broken anyways? There will be stronger and weaker specs, maybe wait a bit to see how things are? There’s no need to overnerf ele.

Also, your problem with stacking 25 might should go to the nerf specs who can do so, too. But why aren’t you complaining about those?

Do you seriously want a situation where wtih HoT new builds will be created that can beat DD ele and Anet will say “oh nice, nothing to do here, problem solved itself” thus making the powercreep skyrocket?

I wouldn’t want to play a game where the current DD ele is considered “fine” or even weak. It would be just unplayable.

Don’t think about thief as killing everyone in sight. Thats the job of bruiser based classes that are tanky and can stack to 25 might in under 20 seconds.

Your job is primarily to use your unparalleled shortbow mobility to force decaps on side nodes first, and to use SR/SA traits to rez downed allies, since stealth prevents stomps, so unless they have very heavy cleave and see it coming they won’t be able to stop you.

As for actual fighting, have your team call targets for you so you can enter a fight after getting a decap and take down a target thats low and blew all of its cooldowns, while doing the same job of +1ing a 1v1 on a side node. Don’t 1v1 yourself unless its another thief, but you should be able to take on other zerker classes depending on their build, such as zerk staff ele, power engi/war, etc. Especially don’t 1v1 builds with high sustain or tons of active defense.

Playing Thief in conquest require you a very different mentality.
You’re here to make your team win, never forget about that.

You mean getting carried by the team? Because thief with bad/average team has 0 influence on outcome of the match.

Whole decapping works only if your team can actually win/hold outnumbered fights.

Whole +1 only works if your teammates is really good at 1v1 and almost killed enemy anyway.

By decapping and +1 correctly, YOU are the one carrying the team, not the other way around

You really think your team mate who is holding close is thinking he’s carrying you when you come get rid of that D/D ele harassing him ? Then come back mid faster than any other class and get a game changing stealth rez ? Then use your unparalleled chasing power to finish any runners to help secure your lead ?

This is what Thief excels at. You did your job as a thief, to be useful to the team in ways Thief is incontestably the best at. And maybe it’s harder in pug because you can’t help clueless teams, but we don’t balance kitten for those people.

If this isn’t the role you like in conquest mode, don’t play Thief. If you want to kill people, play signet Necro or D/D Ele.

with rev coming out it can chase down and kill a decapping thief and ive done it lots during the beta just teleport to them until your in range of sword 3 skill and you almost kill any d/p thief. i can see it now in HoT thief will only be running around the map avoiding combat welcome to player vs cap point

Stealth cancels revenant sword #3, or just spam shortbow 3. Stealth also prevents them from chasing you to the point with shiro teleport. Revenant is strong and the damage needs some nerf, but to some extent it’s also a l2p issue – just get more faimiliar with the class and you’ll know how to play against it.

Goal of proposal

Making Guild Arenas accessible for sPvP guilds.

The issue, and why it’s very important

The key of social activities within guilds is going to be the arena for PvP players. Or at least it would be, but there are plenty of issues with the current implementation. Just to mention a few:

  1. Most PvP characters are nowhere near lvl 80, and while some of use have stacks of leveling tomes, not everyone does and it punishes multiclassers even harder.
  2. After leveling, people would have to buy exotic gear for all characters. Let’s say you purchase it from dungeon tokens from reward tracks and don’t buy them off the TP, you still need runes, trinkets, sigils etc. (Hoelbrak rune = 9g/ea currently, Sigil of Energy is about the same).
  3. What if someone has ascended armor? As it’s unfair, we’d have to make him buy exotics, put in the runes and sigils just for the sake of fair play – paying a fortune just to have a gear the person would never use elsewhere is a huge barrier of entry.
  4. Some PvP stat combos (for instance Marauder) don’t exist in PvE, must be combo’d somehow from other stats.
  5. People from different servers are affected by different WvW stat bonuses too.
  6. Let’s say we throw a custom tournament, how do we enforce the rules? Ask people to submit screenshots of their stats? That makes it a lot more complicated than it already is.
  7. Stats in PvE are generally higher, we’d have to go an extra mile to set the handicap right.

I hope this demonstrates why it’s very complicated (nearly impossible) to create a fair environment here, and I’m fairly certain that most PvP guilds/players aren’t willing to go through this.

Why not Custom Arenas?
Options in CAs are much much more limited. Terrain can’t be customized, new gamemodes/activities can’t really be created, there can only be 2 teams, it’s capped at 20 players (let’s say we want an in-house 2v2 tournament, we have 40-50 competitiors, but only 16 can spectate – and everyone would want to witness at least the finals.)

Not to mention that it costs hundreds of gold to purchase and even more to maintain.

This also wouldn’t hurt CAs at all, as these could still function as a competitive gamemode training grounds, or public duel rooms just like now.

Possible solution

My suggestion would be to add an option for the guild leader and officers to toggle on/off a “PvP mode” which makes the GH (including the Arena) use PvP gear, like in the Heart of the Mists. This way PvE/WvW/PvP people could all benefit from the guild arena.

I’m not sure, but I guess in “PvP mode” masteries wouldn’t work. As it’s not a permanent state and can be switched off, people could still glide and such when it’s in PvE mode so I see no problems here.

In conclusion
Guild Arenas could become a crucial part of the social aspect of PvP guilds, and to exclude your competitive PvP population from using a PvP feature makes no sense. If we could queue up from the GHs and duel each other while waiting for a match to start, that would be even more amazing!

PvP guilds larger than 5 man had no reason to exist for more than 3 years now, and without this option I’m afraid that PvP guilds wouldn’t be motivated to get a guild hall at all.

Conquest isn’t 1v1 deathmatch, so don’t play it like it is. Thief is extremely powerful and valuable in conquest because of its mobility, downed support with Shadow Arts, AoE stealths, spike damage and stability-ripping CC on steal. Just simply avoid doing 1v1s, roam, +1 fights and decap points.

Cele Staff. That’s 2. To some extent Fresh Air too, but it’s actually hard to play so it’s off the table for 99.9% of current ele players.

Cele d/d, Cele staff, and cele s/d are just variants on the exact same playstyle (water/arcana/x, win by outsustaining in 1v1’s, decent damage/support in teamfights). Sure, they have slightly different amounts of support vs. damage, but they are all brawlers.

Fresh air isn’t even close to viable anymore. Prior to specializations it was like a slightly worse version of mesmer without portal (but did better vs. condi). Now, mesmer has WAY MORE DAMAGE, burst with no tell from stealth, portal, and can even survive condi BETTER if they take inspiration. In other words, take an inspiration-shatter mesmer and you have a strictly superior version of s/f fresh air ele in every game-relevant aspect. If there were some strengths for fresh air, you could at least justify it in the right situation, but unfortunately that build has been left in the dust (along with many others) thanks to recent power creep.

In other news, I am very curious how cele ele will fair with all of the OPAF stuff coming out with specializations. I suspect that they might need to actually buff it if they don’t nerf things (and Anet seems to only like buffing, while being very cautious with nerfs). Power-creep full-speed ahead!!!

Please note: I am not implying cele ele is weak now, I am simply pointing out that many specializations have quite a few broken mechanics that the best players will find ways to abuse. In that atmosphere, it MAY not be able to keep up. Or it might be on-par, depends on how quickly anet responds with balance passes post-HoT. If we have any guess form past performance, the pace of changes will be glacial. Let’s hope the meta isn’t dominated by 1-2 mega-broken specs (stronger than ele was), because then you will be stuck with them for a good 6-12 months.

I agree that cele DD and Staff have a similar playstyle, but you can’t ignore that there’s a 20 skill difference there which should be enough to call it a separate build. As for water/arcana/x, this isn’t an ele thing, every thief is Deadly Arts/Trickery/X, Warriors are Defense/Discipline/X, Guardians are Valor/Virtues/X, and so on.

tl;dr : I think that a long timegate on Guild Arenas will make them ineffective at addressing some of the concerns of players who are pushing for them the hardest, and I hope that we can find a smart way to address this before the expansion drops. Hopefully we can get a feedback thread started for ideas.

Really great feedback Benjenx – just want to take a moment and point out this exactly how feedback is best phrased. It’s constructive, thoughtful, and makes great points. This is exactly the kind of feedback we spend our time focusing on reading and listening to – so thank you!

In regards to the time line for the Arena – we discussed as a team and ultimately agree it’s important this building be available early for guilds who really want to acquire it. The base arena building will be available within about two weeks of time after launch (based on aetherium and favor requirements) as long as the guild gets enough gold/materials/etc. acquired from game-play in that two week time to build the building. [TLDR; the fastest any guild could build the building will be about two weeks]

Great change, but please add an option for officers to toggle on/off PvP mode in the GH, which means in the GH you could make your Pvp gear take effect for the sake of using it in the Arena.

Currently you are excluding your entire sPvP playerbase from using the Arena! I’m begging you please consider this option.

Currently it looks like the PvP arena in the GH will.. use PvE gear and ruleset, rendering this place useless for PvP guilds (stats are higher in PvE, there’ll be a difference between people’s gear levels, most Pvp characters aren’t even close to lvl 80 and have no real gear, etc).

Are there any plans to add an option for officers where they can toggle on/off a “PvP mode” for the GH which would make PvP gear take effect? Currently it’s a bit silly that you are excluding the Pvp population from using the guild arena.

I agree with u but guild arenas use only pve gear like wvw dont forget it so its usefull for wvw players , to buy a custom arenas is the best solution for pvp teams to practice

I know it’s useful for WvW players in its current state, I’m talking about making it useful for both Pvp and WvW. I never said anything about PvP team practice, I’m talking about guild PvP events, 1v1 cups, 3 team brawls (recreating old GW1 HoH), etc. The guild arena has so much potential and excluding PvP guilds from PvP arena is weird.

Umm…there’s nothing PvE about the guild arena.

I’m guessing you’re complaining about the halls using WvW settings instead of sPvP settings, but that’s still PvP.

And they’re far from useless to a PvP guild. Even if you only do sPvP, you can still easily get a set of WvW gear for the guild arena.

PvE gear and level are pretty PvE to me.

Simply make your pvp build your pve build and bam! arena is useful. Or are you one of those who went to the mysts and hasn’t actually leveled/stepped out of it?

Guild Halls are for those who play the entire game, not a single segment of it. Even wvwvw players have had to do PvE to get certain things. Just as PvErs need to enter wvwvw to get certain things.

If you never leave the mysts for spvp, you honestly don’t need a Guild Hall.

This is a reply to both comments:
1) PvE gear costs money.
2) PvE gear takes more time to customize.
3) PvE stats are higher than PvP ones, certain amulet stat combos don’t exist there (marauder).
4) Confusion deals more damage in PvE, GH is PvE.
5) Why should a dedicated PvP guild EVER own a GH? You can’t que from outside HotM, and you can’t even properly use the arena. Just another place to afk in.
6) People with various gear tiers just make this worse.

Pretty much like people expected. You still can’t kill them but you have a better chance at stalling them since they don’t deal as much damage.

exactly this i had a 1v1 with a great ele in wvw first time i died the second time i made her run they still have that great sustain but not that faceroll damage DD ele is balance now !

WvW has different stat levels, can access consumables, etc, balance is completely different there, you are posting in the wrong subforum.

Ele was nerfed? Didn’t notice.

Before each game I’d get ~180-200k condition damage dealt in the summary.
Now it’s ~80-90k.
That’s a hard nerf, lol. That also means burning is way too strong compare to bleeding. 3 burn stacks 5s down to 1 stacks 2s, and almost half of the condi damage for Ele gone.
I’m not complaining, just stating fact. I think it’s a good nerf, and Ele should be nerfed. Just that the people who ask for more nerf, they need to l2p

FYI I main ele ^^ And I actually consider this RoF change a buff, now I can cleave downed targets with it and there is less counterplay (as 2 stacks are applied immediately), and with he proper rotation, Hoelbrak runes and sigil of battle I can still stack 20-25 might in a fight. I kill a tiny bit slower, that’s pretty much it.

hmm seems like they nerfed ele a bit. a huge portion of thier dps which was might stacking is pretty much gone. now that they can’t stack might while granting regen and protection and all other boons to themselves u will actually have an opening to strike them. now now ring that ring of fire burns you regardless of passing through it or not. finally rids you of having to stand there while you take thier burst. if they stil want thier insane dps uptime, they’d have to actually forgone the so called ‘’dreaded blinded ashes traitline’’ and go pyromancers puissance. this in turn actually is a big dent in their sustain.

So on top of a quite substantial dps nerf, their sustain is nerfed indirectly as well.

not that this matters to me tough. I honestly had no trouble with ele. but i definately would say this actually consitutes as an actual nerf.

DD ele was able to stack 25 might before they added the cantrip might trait – it’s just going to be slower, but as sustain’s still the same, outlasting isn’t an issue for them.

Clarification: Professions have their own MMR tracked, but it is not currently used in matchmaking because players can switch professions after a match is made.

So a loophole is disabling a powerful tool to generate good matches?

I’d, uh, kinda close the loophole…

The problem with doing this is that players can no longer switch to a more effective profession once they see the enemy team’s roster which happens quite often.

And they shouldn’t be able to change based on that imo. You should just hide the enemy roster and lock people into their base until the match starts – this allows teams to refine their comps but not to counter the enemy’s comp. Guild wars before build wars.

Why are you even still posting?..you’re just asking for nerf here and there, for a change you should tell us what is your idea of balance how would you create a game where every fight is 50/50

Ele has too much sustain/damage? How much is enough against necros, mesmers, thieves, guard etc etc in order to maintain a so called “50/50” scenario at equal skill level?

I dare any forum warrior/armchair developer to answer this question, really for the last time anet doesn’t balance anything..they simply change things to calm the angry mob, any change made is always unrespectful of the skill level involved on both parties involved as your profession ( whichever it may be) take far less skill that you believe in a form or another you all rely on braindead mechanics ( stealth, insta burst with no tell, chainable invulnerability, chainable low Cd CC etc etc)

I could ask the same questions. People are giving voice to legit concerns and you keep answering with comments like “haters gonna hate”. You aren’t contributing to the discussion, you’re just afraid that your spec gets the nerfs it deserves and that makes you think the world is over.

How would I fix it? Reduce distance traveled of RtL while in combat, nerf vigor uptime from cantrips, revert the current ring of fire nerfs and instead increase the CD to ~25 seconds (this would reduce their might uptime as well as damage), and nerf the dodge on heal part of EA. There’s your answer – but what’s the point of answering? Anet will still do it their way.

Get a build, watch streamers who play that build, ask them questions if you got some, watch tournaments (there’s a weekly cup today starting in a couple of minutes).

Avoid youtube btw (as 99% of youtube pvp content is bad, super outdated, or both).

Still not fixing the ele. We’ll just see less ridiculous burns and random blinds now, which was an emergency fix, I guess.

Also, nice Smiter’s Boon on Icebow 4.

How is it not fixed Ele?

  • Sustain? Double the CD on Vigor on crit
  • Might? No more might Cantrips (9 stacks)
  • Burning? Huge nerf from 3 stacks 5s to 1 stack 2s

About that Vigor – you’ll still gain 50%+ utpie from the current trait, then yoU’ll also gain vigor from attuning to water and from using cantrips. You can still pretty much come close to perma vigor without any changes to the cure DD build.

Oh yah, it’s like current D/D ele is using Tempest traits? If you don’t know about the class, at least don’t show people that so you can still appear to be “knowledgeable” and not just a hater.

D/D Ele got a nerf across the board, from Sustain, Burning, to Might. That’s a fact.

Maybe you forgot about Elemental Contingency? Okay, technically it’s not upon attuning, it’s 0.01sec after but I hoped that you’d get the point.

Necros used to walk in and out in the previous version, gaining super high burn stacks and transferred them to Ele with transfer skills

Did that ever work against any decent player? I would just dodge if I saw an enemy necro do that, leaving them stuck with 9 burns once their transfer fails.

Most decent eles stopped using Ring of Fire vs cele necs, so the matchup will basically be the same, except worse eles (who still use it vs necs) will be punished even less all while ele sustain is untouched (they’ll still have ~perma vigor).

Still not fixing the ele. We’ll just see less ridiculous burns and random blinds now, which was an emergency fix, I guess.

Also, nice Smiter’s Boon on Icebow 4.

How is it not fixed Ele?

  • Sustain? Double the CD on Vigor on crit
  • Might? No more might Cantrips (9 stacks)
  • Burning? Huge nerf from 3 stacks 5s to 1 stack 2s

Well, toning down sustain a bit would be a start so they can’t reset 24/7. All they did was taking away some Vigor duration from a trait while they’ll still have the best uptime of it (almost perma) considering how cantrips give you Vigor too just like attuning to water.

Most Ele players are so spoiled after being on the top of every gamemode for so long, that the moment ele becomes slightly balance they’ll burst into tears and demand nerfs beause they’d actually have to learn how to play.

everyone is hoping there is more in the actual patch. They said its only a few notes per class, we get it all on tuesday.

They said it a couple of times in the past, the release notes tourned out to be 100% the same with nothing new.

Yes, they stated that elite specs are suposed to be so changing to your profession, that it would even change your profession icon. As people noted, it was possible to see the icon for scrapper on last poi for example:

But if you ask to me if it is necessary (Since elite specs are far from “Completely changing” your profession playstyle) well, I don’t think it is.

I don’t think that’s the scrapper icon, why would it be in the stat section? I’d say that’s for toolbelt recharge times and has nothing to do with the elite spec.

So atm we don’t know if they are still going for the new icons because we haven’t heard anything about them in a long while.

The new league icons we get with HoT next to the character name should also be visible in the forum. I feel like this would be way better than rank.
Obviously just incase the new league system works (high skilled players in high leagues, low skilled players in low leagues, no insane grind)

Why would this be the case if it was low population. The current reason the queues are slow is because of OVER population.

Oh, so overpopulation is the reason why players have to play with the same pool of ~15 people for hours. I have more variety in matchmaking in GW1 atm.
