It’s unfair to say ANet did this to themselves (or the pvp devs) it all basically summed down to what made more money and every pvp’er realized this after the first 3 months once the game released and the suggestions where pouring in the pvp forums. To some extent grouch pushed the pvp scene far enough for upper management to take notice and give him a job, but the updates (pvp-wise) in the past 2 years have been lackluster and lack of balance changes to correct broken specs (I can say after dhuumfire killed more than half of the pvp population [almost 90% of gw1 only pvp’ers I knew).

It’s no secret the gw2 pvp dev team is small and now lead by people who never played gw1 pvp (which is sadly more active than gw2 still) since they moved on to other projects. The only advice I can give the devs are balance updates not being so few per year, and not completely break specs, but keep them in line with other specs of similar caliber.

This comment will obviously fall into the abyss of deaf ears, but the removal of soloq made me lose interest in the game no matter how much the devs defend their broken soloq system of 3+1+1 vs 3+1+1= balanced guise. What happened to 1+1+1+1+1=1+1+1+1+1?

The problem the devs ignore from the previous leaderboard was a lack of a decay feature, but still showed top players in top 20 teamq and soloq ignoring the outliers.

Even being away from the game for some time, metas are formed based on tournaments, or team comps, some of the new traits really throw new builds into the mix, so nobody will know if more specialized emerging players find these builds and win over “top” teams (due to build>player). It’s a joke to try and theorycraft comps atm, since the build variety will increase which brings it more in line to how it was in beta (for better or worse, pvp wise).

I’m glad they have guys that worked in Guild Wars 1 working on Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars is about diversity, and discovering what works. For example, energy surge mesmer wasn’t a thing in GvG (or atleast a popular one), until someone played it in 4v4 Random Arenas around mid-2010 and people saw it’s potential as a monk killer.

Since GW1 and GW2 are completely different pvp wise they shouldn’t be brought up at this point considering that the lead GW2 pvp dev actually played GW1 pvp and left the team, to have the main pvp dev (current) with 0 GW1 pvp experience leading the GW2 pvp dev team says enough.

The things the devs don’t get is that you can’t make esports because a games popularity is based on the community and people willing to play it (THAT is esports), this game had its chance early on, but slow balance patches and dev interaction was like trying to find bigfoot, anet took a big community loss before dhuumfire patch which took out another chunk of the community. The dev’s are naive to think that introducing a new game mode with pve fluff will bring back the players they lost after beta and hope to make this game esports, they blew that chance out a long time ago. The competitive community is small compared to how many teams formed early on.

the only time a major gw2 twitch stream got a decent amount of views is when they broadcasted free precursors for viewers is something to think about.

my personal opinion: They took a great combat system and completely squandered the chance to make something truly good out of it (which kept me playing for a long time, but there is only so much punishment you can take from slow development)

I’ll lay it out plainly (which I HOPE, your team discussed). Since we are going full yoloq, assume I am a high ranked player* I have an exceptional chance to win, get paired with 2 people that don’t know what they are doing, derank, gg. (Obviously picking diff games, but this kitten is pathetic

Anet promised some type of VOIP to replace teamspeak/mumble/skype prob 2 yrs ago (no joke) to include in game commands to make people rotate/help or other commands that would ease team rotations without the need of a voip, unfortunately that main pvp dev left the pvp team now, so who knows where this (3yr old) idea left off in.

edit: people can defend this point, the dev team is small, but you really don’t have to suffer through this slow pain. (even if you break 300 views on twitch)

What’s more likely is low- and mid-tier players with a lot of time on their hands like it because they can finally see themselves high up on the leaderboards, even though they don’t really deserve anything close to a top spot.

The system is literally atrocious. One of the worst ladder systems ive ever seen. In fact i challenge anyone to find a ladder system in an MMO thats worse than GW2s. They show a clear lack of talent and vision.

The previous one was much worse. Way too volatile, decay helping people to skyrocket by doing 1 game each month,… In some way, the actual system is " similar " since you can still have anyone at any rank, but i guess someone #10 deserves that spot better having 500 games played( even if 300 loses) than someone with 15 games played..

Everyone already said what the problem is today : top players don’t get hurt by losing. Top 100 players should need 2 wins( 3 if top50,…) to compensate a lose against less experienced players, but that’s not the case, and i’ve already seen #1 with +1 win + 4 loses and no points lost..

The volatile part of the last leaderboard was that there was no actual decay, so your main argument is done. Nobody is arguing that the last leaderboard has atrocious decay, what people (generally, and people that stuck through beta) want is an actual leaderboard which displays skill> number of games played because you can have somebody spend 12 hrs at the game per day but be mediocre. The last lb wasn’t perfect but I challenge ANYBODY to look at the past top 100 on each leaderboard (soloq/teamq) and name at least 20 outliers which don’t fall into this category and say that the players that earned those spots are complete trash (pre Dec/inc trash lb).

Regardless of LB, you still need to split queues into soloq and fullteam queue to truly represent “skill”.

There wasn’t any “skill” in the soloq leaderboard (being a person who hit rank 1 in it a few times (900 first time 1k ish 2nd …. forgot others). I might be a minority in terms of taking a break from the game, but the only thing I loved about soloq was that there was no inherent advantage in the other team (in our system now: duos/trios) it was a pure solo vs solo. You can make people believe they are playing solo by leaving party right after you accept match in the current system if you want to tryhard in a sense.

If anyone played many soloq matches they will tell you that: 80% of matches if you have your rotations down and one other person you are likely to win regardless of the 60% of your team that is bad higher up in ranking (depending on activity level). The only time you would get really good games is when activity is high and you face high rank players and the only people that determine the match are the 1-2 players on each team which made close games more than what I have experienced in the new matchmaking system. I met many good players playing high ranked soloq who I would ask if they wanted to team (or random people I met in solo asked me to team), but the new system now makes it so farm>skill and there is no sense of community to recognize good players, Anet shot their community in the heart with this “merged” matchmaking which only leaves the people that met each other in soloq in the previous system and a segregated “If I don’t know you, you suck. community”

An aside:

The system had flaws, but you were punished (in the old lb system) harder for a loss you were meant to lose. They (justin and co.) fixed the matchmaking system to match people better somewhat and removed the #1 reason why people hated soloq which was 4v5s and decided to replace it with unranked.

Assuming the left over grubs (who were low-mid tier) from Dec. consider the system anygood. From ANets perspective, numbers>skilled players. Since they fail to release their arbitrary metrics they are so proud of, I don’t see any improvements to pvp or their small allocated team.

Winning 5 matches in a row vs no names barely moved you compared to beating ppl in the top 25.

Had to make an extra reply for this. I was all for the new changes (making a sound for match timers <- #1 complaint in soloq 4v5s). The problems with the leaderboards now is that there is no differentiation from beating “good” and “bad” players . The system is meant to compensate the massive drop in rating which would happen in the old system if you are matched vs overwhelming odds (in this case premade) and nudge you to play harder. The system itself won’t work (imo), unranked should be scrapped for soloq and let regular queue account for duos, trios, quads? (the only problem is that anets system cannot mm teams using duo trio or quad which means you will wait 1 hr+ queue times, they went for the easiest solution, which is merge). If 3 cannot find 2, just 1+1, if 2 cannot find three just 2+1 or 1+1+1 OR if it’s really active 1+1+1+1+1 vs 1+1+1+1+, etc.

There was actually nothing wrong with the previous leaderboard besides the “imaginary decay” which allowed someone to afk 3 months then jump back to top 10, as was seen when rewards were given for top 20 soloq? and a bunch of afkers just jumped to the top while people playing all week and earned a top 20 spot got deranked to 30+ on reward day lel.

I tried to read all the replies and got a brain aneurysm, the first thing anybody has to work in is watching minimap (playing soloq alleviates this problem greatly [to some extent, since soloq doesnt exist]) if you can rotate perfectly then builds start to matter, let alone non meta builds; hence people playing troll builds because they out rotate you.

To put it in simpler terms:

You can be the best 1v1 king (for the people that rush far and be heroes), let it become a 2v1 and you lose, you are detrimental towards your teams progression since you will get +1 on any other point.

Back on topic

Run yolo builds, because all that it requires is outrotating the other team to “plus 1” fast enough to win a fight or know you are losing to push out to another point. Non meta builds will always win vs uncoordinated/duo+trio but fail vs meta build premades, and then people start to cry OP.

They took out a pure soloq and soloq leaderboard for reasons.. (population was dead in teamqueue) and merged it to a merged queue and grind points leaderboard.

The only factor that made me play more solo, is that even if the matchmaking system messes up, you were guarenteed* a solo vs solo match, after merged queue, I personally care about the game less, I tried to play 1 match yesterday and face an instant tryhard premade after a 1 month hiatus. SYSTEM IS WORKING FINE.

The build is designed to bunker anyways, so they should be always close to the turrets.

That was my real problem with turret engi. If you leave a rocket turret at home then it can pretty much win a 1v1 for whoever shows up at that point and the actual engi can be somewhere else being useful.

See these are the kinds of people who complain about turret Engis! They think people lose 1v1 to an AI Rocket Turret and they think that an Engineer being elsewhere without any utilities spamming Hip Shot is useful! Why can’t everyone just quit qqing and get good!

The biggest reason why turret engis are a problem is because most people quit, when we all knew turret engis are a joke (and still are, hence no “pro” players playing a terrible build).

Some criticism is necessary both for an individual and organization, without it we would potentially never see any improvement. Unfortunately what I see on these forums is nothing like criticism, what I see is a collection of unconstructive posts jotted down in anger and frustration, it’d be better if people would communicate their idea in a coherent and civil manner, never forgetting that their opinion is not the absolute truth and as such it will be contested by other people as it should.
The forums used to be fun to read, now it’s all doom and gloom….a shame really, many features we see today were suggested by posts during the years, now I don’t see how the devs will ever be able to find good meeting discussion material with all this negativity.

My apologies for any grammar mistake, eng not really my 1st lang.

Even if english isn’t your first language, you still wrote out one of the most coherent diagnoses of the forums I’ve seen in a while. The only thing I’d like to correct is that it always has been doom and gloom.

The forums are such a mess that not even developers can take them seriously (if they ever did). The community itself needs to clean up its act. If your opinion isn’t solidly based from your in-game experience then please be silent.If you aren’t willing to accept that your words are likely to be read by actual people who work on this game for a living then you need to understand that you’re drowning out the critics that actually want this game to improve.

The forums are a pool of players that have been grinding the same thing over and over (I should add less than the 1% of pvp’ers), whether they competed in weeklies/automated or not, people wanted what the pvp developers promised (pvp ladder tiers) but we all know the low population doesn’t sustain this.

Even you slightly became bitter because you wanted the game to succeed, it largely failed on its promises (after the entire gw1 pvp team left gw2). It’s fine to be optimistic, but the devs haven’t shown any good faith in 2.5 years to justify the slow progression besides their upper management (shots fired).

Very few features were actually implemented by the community because when they were asking for them on the forums they were basic QoL issues, some of which still aren’t solved today (/resign or /forfeit, /an actual observer mode (trollface), etc.). Most of the forum posters that I have seen have been more or less the same people posting for the past 2 years and the entire pvp forum at the start was active with people giving legitimate suggestions to improve the pvp atmosphere. (There were many more stickys on the top of the pvp forums, but they are gone now? I could be wrong since I haven’t checked lately if they were merged)

So what happened to all the suggestions? You can be cynical and say “anet you bad we suggested this 2 years ago,” but as far as I have been aware, the pvp team is still a small group of developers compared to pve/ (wvw?), this never meant that the pvp team doesn’t hear our suggestions, they do, but when you have limited resources pushing out: QoL improvements, major balance changes happening only 1-2 times per year, people got tired and all you have left on forums are people that enjoy playing the game but hate that no progress (not true) has been made towards the state of the game. The expansion will most likely bring some old pvp corpses back, but it still falls on the devs hands to not wait another…(1-2 balance patches per yr or 2 years for an expansion).

edit: I should have added that if you aren’t happy with the game now and don’t have any other responsibilities besides work, it’s time to take a break.

As the proud owner of 4 champ titles (Hunter, Shadow, Legionnaire, and Paragon) I’m excited to work towards my 5th when the Revenant launches! Those first few weeks after a new class is introduced into PvP are always the most fun, and I plan on taking full advantage of it in SPvP.

That being said, what do you think the Revenant’s champion title will be called?

I needed a separate post to say how 4 champ titles mean nothing since 2012?

Any team with brains, a Mesmer and a Thief would just camp side points and get an ez win against that comp. Thief nullifies Ranger, Mesmer nukes the point holders without even being pressured. Throw in a D/D Ele and any other bunkerish specs (Warrior, Guardian, even Engi) and you get a gg.

To answer, they simply move the Ranger to wherever the Teef isn’t, put the Shotbow on the other point, and leave the pure turret engi mid. They can delay you at either point for a decent amount of time and just rotate to wherever they need to keep 2 points. The Pure Turret Engi could also leave turrets mid, go to wherever help is needed, drop a crate/CC a bit. gg.

I think you misread. The engi would leave the utility turrets at mid, and crate at wherever it’s needed. If you pay attention to the map you can just pop the Thumper active as soon as someone tries to decap. The exception of course is Graveyard, but that has the advantage of you being able to place turrets in annoying to reach spots, forcing any attackers to either kill them first or have to deal with them while taking the point.

I always wonder what kind of turret engis people are facing when they say they’re no good in organized play, being able to have a presence in multiple parts of the map is always good if you have something like a Shoutbow along.

From your response, yes, I did misread, but can somebody explain the suboptimal turret engi build? because as far as I know the build is (still) complete trash and still unviable competitively. i.e. Once an engi burns their crate (especially a turret engi) they will have little to no sustain if they leave their turrets burning on other points, let alone a stunbreak, the build can be easily outplayed by any class in this game (assuming a pure competitive environment and they leave 1 of their utils to troll 800 dmg for no reason on a pt)

I’m still baffled how people consider turret engis a problem (this is my personal and biased opinion)

The only thing that keeps Mr smith and his buddy, the newly found mr jones from gandara wvw scene, hidden in the lairs of Vabbi, is the low cd on the engi heal skills that actually prevents him from 4 v 1’ing. Maybe it’s just rumours. I’ve talked to asdf member Henry recently, and he can confirm this is true. Buff slick shoes buff cd on heal. These are just mr smiths and jones’ cry for help for proper balance. Also double Moa skill will help them 2 v 5 the whole team, as jones often runs mesmer with air/fire procs, which i refrace “Is the best kitten thing happening to this game since crate elite was on the drawing board”

Well the problem is how do you balance for the top level (Mr Jones) and for those at not the top level (pretty much ANYBODY else tbh).

I think they need to balance for both elite play and for semi elite play and for casual play.

So they should nerf things like turrets because its too strong. But for elite play obviously turrets are less of a big deal because someone like Jones just knows how to deal with turrets.

Jones told me the secret to beating a turret engi is to have a clock in your head of when the turrets will fire and get out the way when it happens. This is obviously an insane skill level and I have never seen anyone pull it off like Jones but it is possible.

So where does this leave balance? Who knows. It is a tough job for anet to balance the game for these reasons.

I am sure you have been in games, like I have, where Jones is solo queueing vs the premade you have made and it just makes the game feel so unbalanced. Like I have been in team fights where its 5v4 and we have their whole team low, or even a couple of them in downstate and our whole team is fairly high in health. And then Jones will arrive in the middle of the fight and turn it into a 5v5 and its just so hard to deal with. He will melt a couple of players and turn the tide of the fight. It is as if he pops out of nowhere, the dude is just absurdly good. And that makes engineer feel really OP, but this is not the case. Like you said Jones can also do similar plays on his mesmer with fire/air sigil procs. Sometimes you just have to accept that a guy like Jones is going to dominate whatever the balance is like.

Regardless this thread has opened up some interesting areas for discussion. So thank you for that OP. Maybe Jones or Smith can come and give some top level feedback at some point. I know Mr Taylor, probably the best elementalist in game was hoping to provide some balance feedback in a video on youtube. But he hasn’t got round to it yet. Obviously Taylor isn’t as good as Jones, but the dude rightfully claims to be the best ele in game even though he has never really played outside of solo play (again). That famous moment when he soloed about 9 dudes in WvW though was insane. Then people said he couldn’t do it in sPvP and Taylor just went on a rampage in solo queue where he just destroyed many of the top premades with his far point assaulting strategy.

Anyway, this thread has thrown up some good discussion. keep it coming people.

Oh you beat a beat team that was 3+1+1 when you were 2+1+1+1, statistically it makes sense, from a player base, it is completely frustrating justin.

Based on my time of playing I have faced more 2,3,4 queues alone (this will be verified) and a solo player (myself) will be placed with other 2,3,4 queues so it is even technically right? Wrong.

At this point it means, pvp devs that never played gw1 (since all gw1 pvp devs left from gw2, besides gaile? (pvp wise) for communications or some other menial job in anet). What you should take into account is that the main head for the semi-newly assigned gw2 pvp-dev (who never played gvg or knows how to play it in) gw1 pvp dev and quit) is that he never played gw1 pvp! Let that sink in.

On a more serious note, people that developed original gvg would have to work at Anet for more than 10 years now, average time at one job is much lower than that.

Hence the sarcasm, and Izzy still works for anet?, so you can say he is a fossil if he still works for them? (rather not google this argument) but I was specifically pointing out pvp in general, where most of the gw1 pvp team quit.

Dev is a broad term, it includes designers, programmers, testers, etc.

At this point it means, pvp devs that never played gw1 (since all gw1 pvp devs left from gw2, besides gaile? (pvp wise) for communications or some other menial job in anet). What you should take into account is that the main head for the semi-newly assigned gw2 pvp-dev (who never played gvg or knows how to play it in) gw1 pvp dev and quit) is that he never played gw1 pvp! Let that sink in.

I remember when they actually did a feedback on forums on balance changes (perplexity shenanigans) now with the new head pvp dev (since our head pvp dev from gw1 left the team) we have 0 communication between changes that happen now and when they are released (what is transparency?) I will refrain from rage, but is this really what we waited ~9 months for? Or are the devs going to be more open with feedback on upcoming changes? (we can circle back to devs saying changes are happening, but this “balance patch” was a joke)

p.s: condi engi wants to give you guys a hug because for a 2 sec nerf from 12-10 they can proc torment now

It’s always one of the less-complained about changes that have the biggest impacts. Kind of like when they just slipped immob-stacking in there.

Giving a new source of condis to some builds is already a little silly. Condi engie can now start the fight with a nice 6 condi burst (with that nice, FREE, 7-8s burn buried deep in there) with a single hit. (For those ignorant, landing a freeze nade, for instance, gives you chilled, IP for burn, doom sigil for poison, torment sigil for torment, steel packed powder for vuln, and shrapnel or sharpshooter for bleed). The best part is, all those free procs CAN’T BE DODGED!!! HOORAY FOR COUNTERPLAY!!!

cmon now, the devs didn’t see this coming……………..

Not sure if uberkingkong is trolling or actually delusional about darth’s engi skills when he mentioned on stream practicing 1v1s vs backpack and consistently losing. I also had to point out to him on stream that using jump shot pregame doesn’t blast swiftness from static field (it can be trolling if he did it 1 time, but he did it during the 8 games at start [that I saw until I commented] in a row, legitimately thinking you blasted swiftness from a leap finisher), I will leave it at that since I knew Darth and he was a decent person on ts/in game.

The first reasonable list on skill changes I agree with, knowing the obvious logic of anet, this will never happen.
(it’s been 2 years right? and the competitive scene left b4 tourny tickets left (3-4 months when the game released, a large influx of players quit pvp))

enjoy being delusional when 200 viewers = successful gw2 streamer

when card games (hearthstone) bring 20, 15, 10, 8, 7, 3, 3, 2, 1k viewers daily. (and they donate)

I would like to have the possibility of seeing who teamed up with who at the end of the game. Countless times, in a match were my foes were crushed, one of them wrote in map chat: “premade vs soloers, how fun!”, when actually we were all solo players. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think in many cases it’s just the egos talking (I lost, so they must be a premade).

Keeping solo and premade apart isn’t a solution. The good thing about the old solo queue was you could queue up and play with other people your level in fun games. That isn’t the case now. When you queue solo you get in games with many beginners. Not enough people solo queue currently (who are decent) because the system is so frustrating.

I must admit I’m not under the same impression. Before the patch, I was around 95% in the soloq leaderboard, and I played with and against either complete noobs (I mean, “what is close?” kind of noobs) or ROM. Since the patch, it’s not really more balanced (I’d say a little bit), but the queue times are much shorter!

Furthermore, this thread specifically asks for the return of soloq, but you say solos against premades is not the problem? The problem with soloq is that no matter how good you are, it’s always RNG: if your teammates are better than your foes, usually, you’ll win. And like I said, I’d like an option to be added to know for sure that I’m not against a premade. I mean, one 3-man party once in a while is ok, but right now you can only guess when it happens.

Pretty sure I’m not the only one here, but I would take a dice roll chance to win as long as I face 5 randoms relative to my own standing (or face a complete blowout to random stacked matches, because when you soloq, you expect to lose).

nope, soloq is garbage and it will separate the pop again. I like instant queues, and soloq’ers will get separated from the premades as the season progresses.

This is still “beta season,” the new matchmaking changes are heavily favored towards helping soloq more (same class, 4v5s, etc), this was almost a non-existent problem in teamq granted there was a larger wait time (depending what time you play). If you prefer forming a team on ts and rolling over non-organized groups because the new system considers your rank 90% or something is not fun, you won’t get better at this game rolling over worser players (it might inflate your ego though).

In regards to more people playing a broken system, people are complaining about the current system now and you expect the population to grow?

Almost forgot to add that pvp devs said bringing back soloq was off the table, they are “satisfied” with their new system. If any dev wants to reply to this, they would explicitly say soloq is coming back. (no response to my comment)

Given the new matchmaking system, a poor pleb like myself that was top 100 in the previous system (team) is only 76% now. Since the new leaderboards give people the opportunity to grind out more games, if you actually want to get better I would assume you would want to play in the 5v5 custom servers, because rank is meaningless, and you actually have more fun playing with random team comps (with people you would recognize) and try to win in private servers over trash rewards.

It is a terrain glitch, I doubt the player intentionally did it since it is most likely a server glitch, but most of the time they are within a close radius from that point (where their body shows them but they are somewhere else close by) [240 in game radius I believe ~guesstimate]. [+600 for theif, if someone wanted to be technical about the range]

The only way to counteract it would be with some type of melee type cleave (randomly until you find the real (server) body so they don’t res back), I doubt anyone would try to res back unless they want to be a pet for the person watching them.

Remove celestial so eles can go back to soldiers/valk and engis go back to rabid, which are countered even heavier by condi (necros, owait) than they are now. Warriors would literally be pushed out of the meta unless they run soldiers (or zerk, lol), so their support decreases dramatically that they drop below mes tier. Given the state of the current meta, removal of celestial pushes us back to the condi meta than ever, given more people playing engi, but it does not address the consistent might stacks which make celestial so strong.

Right click their names
If you can add them to party = solo
If you can’t = at least a duo or if their whole team is like that = 5 or 3+2 or some other combination (4+1 with 1 player from team pretending to be solo)
