Pvp was destined to be bad when anet decided to make a spammy and closed end skill system. Why they decided to do away with the GW1 skill formula entirely is beyond me.

I’ll still lurk around every 2 months or so (I grew up with gw1 and competitively played gw1 and gw2 pvp), after most of the main pvp devs that built gw1 left and left us with this hot mess of deleting amulets and sigils for “balance”. I still can’t really put blame on the pvp devs (that are left) for what’s left of pvp.. management is just going to push out the next expansion with more pvp problems to ensue. No, actual company will invest into the laughable numbers the last “esports” event took place in. I still tip my hat off for the streamers (pvp) that have played since beta and streamed regardless of making it a money making process, for the rest of the thirsty active pvp content promoted by anet, I can point you towards almost 3 years ago —->.

GW2 e-sports: Nails In The Coffin?

in PvP

XGhoul.7426

When are people going to realize e-sports is a waste of money? ANet needs to actually build a workable PvP system, not just throw money at it. ANet can’t take shortcuts. Pro-leagues have failed. A game doesn’t become a sport because of money, it’s because people enjoy to play and watch it. It infuriates me to see pro-leaguers complaining. PvP is literally made for them, forget the new and average player. They’re literally catered to by ANet. Where the hell are the priorities?

Right now PvP needs:
- Separate Solo Queue(1-man) and Team Queue(5-man)
- Profession Balance
- TUTORIAL
- Fix Hotjoin
- Fair matchmaking system

These are the BASICS.

If I had a choice between fixing PvP and killing the PvP “scene”, I would choose the second.

You’re way far off on what was needed to make this game “esport”. Anyone who has been here since launch can tell you two glaring issues off the bat:

1. The game is still aids to watch as an outside spectator to see (particle effects are one of the biggest offenders).

2. Proper balance: but what I mean by it isn’t so idealistic, HoT powercreep broke the entire gamemode they were trying to build and it took almost 1.5 years for them to barely normalize this (and it still isn’t good enough). With another expansion meant to cash in their dying revenue and another set of problems for pvp, you can clearly see why people ran for the hills (unless they are getting paid) a while ago.

Once devs communicate back on why x-change was buffed or nerfed and actually get community balance (not 2 months apart to fix) rather than being stuck on their notions of what “balance” is then you can start to tackle the issues you brought up.

Kervv farmed Chaith in 1v1s to always decap him (sometimes beat him outright and always force a +1) and they never had a good chance to replace someone in the fight to 1v1 a mesmer with a theif teamcomp so they were always kitten. If they replaced someone else to 1v1 kervv they lose out on their teamfight potential, and 55 always took advantage of that.

Yeah you’re really biased, fighting Mesmer for 3 games straight and dying once before switching to Lyssa/Sneak Gyro in the first game – that’s all well and good, Mesmer wins every other matchup on the comp we ran so nullifying moa, portal plays, and holding a point neut was not a bad outcome.

Edit: posting in toxic and uninformed thread

Fair enough, it’s easy for me to armchair and critique knowing it didn’t work out, but that’s a fair tradeoff imo.

Season 4 Ranked Matchmaking Change

“Ranked PvP matchmaking has been updated to create the most even matches possible within your pip range.”

So, 2 necro + 3 heavy vs 2 thieves + 0 heavy is “most even match possible”? With an expected result like 500-50?

Come on, guys. Stop lying please and admit your incompetence. Then hire decent programmers so we can enjoy really even matches. Thank you.

Its because ANET does not implement class specific MMR and only account MMR. So there is no way for them to determine how class comp will affect the result. They are simply looking at your account mmr vs other peoples account mmr.

That’s not what this says:

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Matchmaking_Algorithm

But I don’t think I believe this at all or it is outdated. I see class stacking many times. Just yesterday I was an Ele on a team of 4 Guardians and no they were not premade….

S1 matchmaking was always team favored compared to S2/S3 being really soloq favored (playing with more people was detrimental), I don’t know why anyone is surprised now that we’ve gone back to S1 matchmaking why it wouldn’t be team favored again.

Back to the good ol 50/50 where one or two players on either team is going to drag experienced players down all for the sake of matchmaking. If I recall correctly, the first time we had S1 matchmaking, complete fresh players were rising in ranking extremely quick, meanwhile more experienced players were taking a longer time to climb because their matches were really close (this made amber+ a nightmare in s1, but we have earlier division placement now). Good change for the casual, slight annoyance/frustration for more experienced people (the exact opposite of s2 and s3 matchmaking) I don’t have any faith that anet will implement a middle ground anytime soon.

Making a game good for the 1% on top is surely the best way to improve.
Yeah, they should give you something for being on top, but the waiting times are your own responsibility. It was “the top players” crying in season 1 that the system is kitten and stuff and that it takes forever to get into legendary again, yadda yadda.
You won’t get new blood into legendary, because a kitten ton of players are stuck in diamond on losing streaks vs legendary players. So, deal with your kittenty queue times, while everyone else deals with the unbalanced matches the new system forces upon us and finally quits the game.

Pretty sure nobody was crying about making alt accs to farm ppl since 1 amber= a free win when you queued boosted 4 other ppl. They can tweak matchmaking as much as they want, but it wont improve overall player populations which taper after around 2-3 weeks max at the start of a league.

Here’s an insightful thing to think about: If a person is carried by a high mmr, is every person on their team being carried by someone else while also simultaneously carrying another player?

I think after S1 it should’ve been blatantly obvious anet thinks having a “legendary leaderboard” = prestige, when you get the same exact thing as joe grindsalot playing 600+ games to legend. There’s nothing to keep people playing, so naturally (queue times are a symptom of this) people go and play on their alts, play unranked, or quit until next season. I think it’s pretty funny though that the reward structure for their “legendary backpiece” was structured behind getting it across 4 seasons, I can’t even.

One of two things will happen after this proleague worlds implodes upon itself since I don’t see anyone investing money into a niche scene. Resume snails pace “balance patches” and introduce another arbitrary backpiece which would take at a casual pace 3 seasons to do (but it will be 4 seasons) or introduce more specializations with a future expansion further throwing the game into casual mode and let the competitive scene die more (if it already isn’t on deaths door right now).

Skill splitting is a good thing but I think people are ignoring the rest of the post. I actually like the idea of having rounds and the way it was described is pretty well thought out, my only concern would be balance with cheesy sustain builds which can still pump out damage while mitigating taking damage themselves, but that’s more of a balance issue.

The only obvious comp with a disadvantage was PZ, with skill and rotational issues aside (playing favorable matchups). The other sets were purely decided on a combination of “on the spot decisions” and rotational gameplay, if somebody got cleaned out in a 1v1 it is a very big deal because skill becomes greater than build at that point (or vice-versa). To place balance on teams that win tournaments is completely wrong, because some builds are made to only work in coordinated groups while others are made for meta battle and they are all-rounder type of builds.

Did the game waste it’s potential? Yes. Will a more balanced pvp bring people back? Just the few that still lurk the forums, yeah, but back to 2012 levels with old school gw1 players and its potential? Never again. I’m personally confused what the pvp team does in general because they don’t do balance, that’s relegated to the “balance team” we haven’t had any new maps since skyhammer and got a failed gamemode which is still in ranked queue. The thing I’m curious about the most is since the “pvp team” isn’t in charge of balance… what have they really been doing?!

Same applyes to the balance team if there is one. Ok maybe they are incompetent in balancing while maintaining build diversity couse they lack on actual gameplay experience in pvp couse they focus on pve or wvw. This statement is hilarious itself couse pve balance is nowhere the majority of skills traits and weapons are beyond useless compared to the optimal ones. Now tell me whats the priority.

Yeah, it’s extremely confusing knowing there is a “balance team” watching over all 3 game modes when their bias has only been towards pvp (lets just split balance across 3 game modes cough cough). The only type of balance the “pvp team” try to do is removal or addition of amulets because apparently that is within their control without messing with the “balance team”, it all seems really messed up and confusing the more you start to think about it.

My feeling is that anet is out to please only their “ecompetitors” at whatever expense the community feel.

This game has hands down the worst pvp system I’ve seen and Im taking swtor into account. Wvw is brilliant, I enjoy raids, pve is fun. pvp is garbage.

Eh, 3/4 aint bad.

I LITERALLY have one foot in the grave when it comes to pvp. If this next patch doesn’t address these problems, then I’m done with pvp for good. It’s just not fun anymore.

I’m tired, tired, TIRED of conquest for 4 freakin’ straight years. It just doesn’t bring people in. I mean look at the ESL lol. Pathetic!

I mean come on. Stronghold pretty much crashed and burned. There’s just no other ways to have fun in this mode. I was really patient, maybe too much so. But hey, we all have limits right?

Then you seriously need to adjust your expectations. This game doesn’t really have more viable modes in a 5v5 setting other than conquest because everyone is a pseudo-healer. When they decided to abandon the holy trinity in mmos they killed pvp before it ever had a chance to start. If you look back in gw1 their “conquest” mode was the most despised mode in pvp, when it became the main pvp mode in gw2 I thought it was a joke, but after you understand their game philosophy almost any other pvp game mode is bound to fail which sucks (no defined roles= you can casually be a hybrid of everything).

Did the game waste it’s potential? Yes. Will a more balanced pvp bring people back? Just the few that still lurk the forums, yeah, but back to 2012 levels with old school gw1 players and its potential? Never again. 1-10: How to kill the remaining casuals that pvp.

Some thoughts: If you introduce a blank slate mmr it would not be extremely volatile the first few weeks because you would have on an extreme situation very experienced players playing with -not so- experienced players and have players similarly rise up (think of season 1) who don’t deserve to be at that division.

I’m pretty sure the reason why they don’t show MMR is hidden behind purely bad optimization on their back end, people were asking for this almost 3 years ago and the best response I got from a dev through private messaging was "I don’t recall why we don’t show MMR, but the algorithm is fairly difficult to understand. I’m sure I don’t even fully understand it, and I’m still working on that. " -2 years ago and since then the dev left Anet.

Most of your problems would be fixed if there was a dedicated healer in this game, but Anet shot themselves in the foot and killed alternate game modes in one go. If this game had a healthy population I am all for it, but the only thing your system would do is alienate the “casuals” that need to play 200+ games to get to diamond and make the queue times rise more. In your system (with the amount of people playing right now) almost nobody would get legendary because all the pip pushers are being held back and can’t eat their carrot. The best way to do the next exploit is people deliberately boosting their alt accounts to boost their mains.

Long story short: The amount of pvp knowledge to not be one of the crybabies in forums requires so many games played that they still refuse to look at their own ability to improve or efficiently play with other ppl without voip. The game has been casual for too long.

As a Scrapper main I can tell U that the easier way to kill Scrappers is with condition damage.

The Scrapper have a really good sustain but also have a lack on condition cleanses (more lack with medic gyro than turret version). The sustain can soak part of the condi damage but the lack of condition cleanses make it vulnerable against condibombs. Even more if the bomb is created with few stacks of different conditions than huge stacks of few conditions.

The “natural” counters of Scrappers are condi reapers and berserkers. Condi thiefs and chronos are problematic aswell but not as dangerous than the first two.

English is not my native language but I hope that everyone could understand what I am saying.

So what you’re saying is, the only decent counter to scrapper right now is the out of control condition burst/spam?

Ok then XD

Seems like you’re cherry picking arguments, do engis face the biggest hard counter vs a condi spike? yes. Are they immune to everything else? No. Any decent necro should destroy an engi, purely based on animations, as an engi main, when you face this type of player you might as well let go of the keyboard if you wanted to win a 1v1. (realistically you let them grab the point and disengage)

That isn’t to say there aren’t ways for a mes/war player to lock an engineer down, but it requires more work than a necro. After that there are 3 stalemate matchups: ele, ranger, and an engi. The class is honestly a far cry from what it used to be and it’s frustrating to play atm. I would break down each matchup, but hot has thrown balance out the window, with another upcoming expansion and skill balance.. yeah..

No offense though, what are the hard counters for scrappers?

Even metabattle says its TBD.

Well played necros (they dont have to be top tier) [or insert any top tier condi stack class: mes or war] can easily dismantle a scrapper. They actually don’t have to play the matchup that well to win, if you watch the scrappers animations. If you want to casually say scrapper is top tier for solos, that’s fine, because they do perform better than other classes in a soloq situation, team-wise, they are really lackluster atm. (imo)

edit: some of the issues that people bring about hammer dealing too much damage: well, they have to run to your FACE to deal dmg while defending, so you do one of two things: run and avoid dmg or breathe from your mouth more and face tank dmg while you hit an engineer in the face in an invuln phase.

Side note: metabattle isn’t the end-all-be-all for builds you should play, I play my own scrapper variant with an 89% win rate to legend.

There’s occasionally instantly 4 people switching professions to have a balanced comp, when I play on certain divisions, on EU servers especially.

Players have all the tools to play with competitive comps, the only thing standing in the way of that is not caring enough. I think as a playerbase we need to move more towards a culture of class switching.

Look how Overwatch does it.

You brought up the biggest point on why class stacking systems are bad in general (instant swap for the the highest potential for your team to win), but the track record for this game (pvp) speaks for itself.

Why we need Platinum Division.

XGhoul.7426

If the devs could do this idea, great, I’m all for it, but we haven’t gotten any fixes or eta to when we can queue outside hotm because of spaghetti code and how sometimes minimal updates to pve suddenly bring pvp bugs into the game which makes me really question something if like this could be pulled off.

Assuming it can:

I think the matches “might” be more competitive but you are making assumptions that someone who has spent their entire time playing one class is good (or not). Ultimately, even in the most perfect even matchmaking system there will always be 1-2 weak links, to say ideally, the teams would be exactly 50-50 is too far of a stretch (this is assuming the current population and the wide gap in knowledge between people that know how to play as a team and people that don’t).

Some other concerns which aren’t brought up are: How long would you be willing to wait/other people? Everyone has bad days once in a while which is why even though the system picks the most perfect 50-50, the teams aren’t equally skilled, even though the match may appear so.

XGhoul.7426

Why. Why is this even a thing. A group of two, fine. A group of three, kind of pushing it. But a whole group? Seriously? What the hell? That’s hardly fair. I’m not sure what the devs were thinking. I can understand guild missions and such, but honestly having a whole team of guild members is just ridiculous.

Is there a way that Anet could separate these things? Like putting premade teams in a separate queue so we don’t waste my time on that kind of bullkitten? Or limiting the amount of people in sPvP premade teams into no more than two or three?

I hope Anet does something about this. I like the game and all, and yes I know that in this game pvp will never will be balanced (ever), but at least make an effort to show that there is something to be done to keep the imbalances in check.

Also, it doesn’t help that some people didn’t buy HoT. You take it up the kitten unwillingly if you didn’t buy the new expansion.

This is the exact opposite that should happen. PvP is a “TEAM GAME” not a solo PvE crap where you can roam and don’t care about others. It is a team game and should be played in premades and not solo! So instead of creating stupid threads asking Anet to not allow premades, you should rather not play solo or just stick to unranked or PvE things.

Many of the nuances to playing in teams will never be gained in a pug queue from “lf for 2 more for 5 mans” even playing on ts. I think the game itself has a steep learning curve to playing effectively as a team which conflicts with the casual nature Anet wants people to play. If there was only a team queue, the small population that currently exists would become even smaller. This becomes a problem which Anet hasn’t solved since launch which is a basic pvp tutorial which people have suggested, but the resources to do so have been non-existent. Most of the 5 mans made up of good players don’t really use ts (90% of the time) in “premades” unless they are making fun banter in between because it is pointless and everyone rotates or helps a teammate out from a messed up situation or just people are used to talking to each other, fyi.

Nothing can be toned down pre-expansion, otherwise people that only pvp wouldn’t have a reason to purchase this expansion, with the next expansion (more power-creep) looming and disregard of core skill balance, I think it is time to accept the game for what it is.

This couldn’t be more false. The “intended” purpose for people to buy the expansion is to have an add on to build diversity, however what the people got is being forced to take out of necessity because of how strong it is “for the vast majority of elite specializations”. Instead of burying your head in the sand like you suggest, I’d rather actually make suggestions of how to actually improve the game than to fold.

Countless

What you think is the intended purpose doesn’t really work because Anet has shown since hot release that core abilities across the board are fine (the exception being troll warrior buffs which can’t keep up with sustaincreep). I would rather bury my head in the sand than spend valuable time thinking of solutions (suggestions) through the forums which the “balance team” sees as feedback because they have continually ignored suggestions since they can’t split balance across game modes. I could be wrong, but they have never taken any good balanced skill decision from forums and applied it to the game, it has always been heavy handed in one direction to the point where people ask if they even play their own game.

XGhoul.7426

Dont understand the big deal he just says what all veteran players already knew only anouncing it to public. Everyone knew that if you want to go pro in gw2 then try to put the least amount of effort and dont sacrifice anything for it.

If the game would be about skill then a team that wins world championship wouldnt be one of worst teams next year with same players while competing against same players.

Leet0 speaks the smarts. GW2 is not a competitive game. It’s a game designed by casuals for casuals, funded by gem store dress-me-up. And I say this without any malice or criticism, because targeting casuals is not a bad thing. The casual market is far bigger than what Anet would achieve if they went after the competitive PvP segment.

The friction we see on the forums happens when competitively-minded PvPers have not yet come to terms with GW2’s casual nature and find themselves frustrated by the design direction. (BTW, I’m not talking about Argi/Vermillion here specifically, just in general.) Take the PvP seasons as an example. Anet wants everyone to reach Ruby, and Legend to be attainable for the moderately skilled through a reasonable time investment. Anet treats the PvP seasons as a reward track because that’s the game they want to build. The disconnect happens when people such as myself call for a more skill-based environment where Legend would have at least some prestige, and we have not yet accepted the reality that Anet’s vision for the game is fundamentally different from ours. Anet does not “fix” the lack of competitiveness of the ladder, because from their perspective there is nothing to fix.

As for the Pro League, the lack of competitiveness there is a logical outcome of the casual league seasons. There is no tryhard progression at the grassroots level, no path for aspiring new players to achieve bragging rights and graduate to the big leagues. The only way the Pro League could suddenly be competitive without the infrastructure to foster new players is through magic.

TL;DR Argi just disillusioned and salty as F. Casual game working as intended.

You can swap classes before the match begins and during the match, balance is not the issue at all, not to mention the game is quite balanced at high level play, most of the pvp community won’t be able to understand that though, so I won’t argue about it.

If it really was balanced, then class stacking would not have been banned from esl.

HA cant work because there is no such thing as a frontline, midline or backline in this game to have different game modes, everyone is just a hybrid running around. Unfortunately, I think only conquest works based on how they made the classes. (which is fine for pve, sucks for pvp)

Ofc there are frontliner and backliner. The midliner would be like “focus party”. Go into WvW, follow a Zerg and you can see that roles
But who says that we need frontliner, backliner or something else in HA? Those roles became Meta in Gw1 because it was effective. People will make their own Meta in HA for Gw2, too.

That’s being optimistic, deathmatch wont work in this game, capture the flag won’t either, my biggest gripe playing this game is that they picked the most hated game mode in gw1 (capture points) and made it the main game mode for this game (conquest). To say there wasn’t a legitimate role system in guildwars 1 is being delusional, exceptional midline (interrupt mesmers) or backline (healers) became known based on their skill to shut down 8 other players, that doesn’t happen in this game.

If your team can’t win a 1v2 you deserve to lose, don’t make it worse by making it a 1v3 or when your theif went 1v4 (@4:00), you should only help even fights (to finish fights faster) or when your teammate is in an uneven fight, this is just a fundamental thing to know.
didn’t feel like watching the rest as the other comments pretty much gave good advice.

This kinda has applied to me today. I’ve won some matches and Ive lost some matches. The matches I lost I was paired with at least 2 of the same ppl from all my other losses.

After one loss, if your teammates are so horrendous, you should take a 2-3 min break (or however long your queue is) to avoid playing with the same people in your mmr/pip range. I find it hilarious some people who claim go on “40+” lose streaks (exaggeration) playing with the same people don’t realize brute forcing instant queuing losses will likely pair you together again if they do the same.
