Dungeons ... before I turn 80, or after?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nagr.1593

nagr.1593

Even when underscaled, lvl 80s will still have better gear and dps because of ascended, complete traits, etc. there’s even more difference now whether you’re lvl 80 or not, because you won’t have most of your traits unlocked or will be lacking trait points if you’re under lvl (this is a huge deal). If i see anyone under lvl 80 in a group for explorable now, I will immediately leave or call a kick on them. The lowest level I would suggest doing explorable is lvl 70 or higher. At that point you will have most of your traits unlocked, and if you are doing a dungeon like CoF p1 which is so braindead and easy, most of them won’t even care.

Warrior or Necromancer?

The amount of weapons it ckittene is off putting. so really only looking for a warrior or necro.

The number of weapons a class ckittene doesn’t really tell you much. Warriors ckittene so many weapons, but imo most of skills they have are pretty boring and useless, and you only end up using one or two of them. Eles on the other hand can only use 4 weapons, however they have so many useful skills on them that it feels like a lot more variety. People’s opinions of what is ‘boring’ is their own, for instance my main is a warrior and I still have the most fun with it (next to my thief). I will say warriors are better than necro for PvE, their dps is better and they can buff their group’s dps by a whole lot more.

look at the list of consumable, mainly the ember and ogre pet whistle (you ckittene them for the p2 transition so you don’t get the grub). Also try to dodge into him for phase 3, since it deals damage with the minor trait. Other than that, very nice solo

thief is probably the most mobile class in the game. however they are not that easy a class, so you will have to use stealth, evade etc. to survive. an annoying thing with warrior for open world (especially world bosses) is that you cant autoattack on stack spot since you don’t have 1200 range unless you trait. this is inconvenient, but with thief and other classes you can autoattack pretty easily.

Sigil of Bloodlust vs. Sigil of Force

not rly sure if this is relevant, but:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Talk:Sigil_of_Force

i think I asked a similar question a while ago but i can’t remember what the answer was. I guess it depends how much power u have, but in general force > bloodlust unless u have full stacks that you can maintain. Then again, you can also have a bloodlust wep on a 2nd set and a Force sigil on your main set (unless you are an Ele that only uses one set, in which case bloodlust is def not worth it).

What do you do with dungeon tokens?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nagr.1593

nagr.1593

What I’ve found is that you have no better chance of getting greater rewards from an expensive weapon like a great sword (390 tokens) than you do from an off hand weapon like a warhorn (210 tokens).

now try salvaging rares, its actually cheaper and you get just as much ectos (from what I remember). if you are feeling lucky, you can also take those exotic GS and throw them in the forge. I got a Dusk drop from this a couple months ago, on my first try that day too.

No way to unlock traits except pve?

in Players Helping Players

nagr.1593

I think most of the people who are angry with the trait change, is becuase it now forces them to actualy do work to unlock their traits. not only is doing some of them a real waste of time (like map comp), but they have to waste even more time looking at all their traits to figure out which ones are worth taking. I recommend looking at the meta builds for your class, it will help you figure out which traits are more useful to have. Most of the events to unlock actualy aren’t that hard, it’s just making sure you have the map explore to them that’s the hard part. some of the low-level events (taidha, modniir etc.) are actually world bosses and you can look at a timer to see when it starts. the ones that are more a waste of time you can just buy them from the trainer (that’s what I did).

How to be Patient?

keep in mind this was many months ago, when Howl was like 300g or so (dont remember exact price). I hope you understand Howler has always been one of the cheaper legendaries.. when I was starting out it took me 3-4 months to get enough gold to craft Sunrise. Twilight which I crafted like a month ago was easily about 2000g. of course I wasn’t counting sell orders for all t6 mats, I know it would be much more if i did that. I had some mats already, promoted some and got others from clovers.. otherwise Howler would’ve been over 1000g for sure.

Legendaries take time, if I made a post like this for every time I was frustrated with the TP and prices being too high in general, I’d have made a few at least. The most tiresome ordeal for me when crafting legendaries was not that I lacked the gold needed (i had more than enough), but that I had to wait so long for the price of T6 mats and pres to drop before I could buy them from the TP. I had to wait at least a month before I could safely bid and get Dusk for 800g (yes it was just as costly as now), and I did the same thing with the other pres I needed. I still remember the total cost for Howler when I crafted it months ago was around 850g (yes.. I remember thinking that’s pretty cheap for a legendary) but it is probably higher now. I also don’t see why people complain about as little as 20g, but I understand how it might be hard if you are pugging dungeons to get that much. I easily make twice that in a day without running dungeons like crazy though, so I could possibly lend you some gold if you need it.

Still have trouble getting in to it...

nagr.1593

Well that’s the thing, you need to actually level one of your guys to 80 before you have the real fun. For many, the endgame is both challenging and enjoyable. You can gear out your 80 with ascended/legendaries which can be fun if you make it, best way to do this is by grinding PvE, mostly group content and dungeons/fractals (though tbh i haven’t done fractals in months, I got all the ascended pieces I wanted from it a long time ago I guess). For me personally ascended crafting is more frustrating than for legendaries, that’s mainly coz of dragonite which I’ve had a lot of problem with. That’s basically all I focus on anymore, just min-maxing my gear or improving aesthetics with different skins, dyes etc. and having fun with PvE and dungeon runs (I only run the few paths I like). There is also PvP but I could never get into it much, and of course living story achievs but again, something I haven’t done in months. I feel that megaserver ruined most of the endgame for me, for instance CoE almost always get contested after i finish one path, and I have to leave even though I join for an all path run (you have no idea how annoying that is). another thing it ruined is that there is always someone doing any event, makes it hard to solo Champs etc. in open world if you want to test yourself or are just doing it for fun. For instance something like this is no long possible (tried it a while ago on thief, but there’s always someone else there): Champ solo in Cursed Shore

In short you should plan on getting at least one of your guys to lvl80, then you will find you have more fun with groups or with guild. For instance there’s potential for me to make 50g in 3 hours or so, but that’s boring for me since I know it’ll just be me and no one else. that’s why I instead run the dungeons I like with guild or pugs, I definitely make less but at least I have fun with it. My advice is to pick one or two classes that you like most, and run with them. For the longest time, I had only one class I used as my main (warrior for half a year when I started). I then tried guard and ele for a month each, but I haven’t used either in a long time. I could never get the hang of guardian, it didn’t feel like I was doing dps even when I had the build for it and also I wasn’t sure I was doing it right. Ele was fun for the first months because it was challenging.. then it became too much effort, especially might stacking all the time and then downing a lot and getting frustrated with pugs. I don’t use it much anymore, except when doing a full speedclear dungeon tour with guild which tbh I haven’t done in a month at least. I usually run only a few paths with pugs nowadays, with same class usually. I make a lot less gold then I probably could, but I’m fine with that since I mostly beat the game and have basically everything I wanted (5 legendaries after year or so, though I still don’t have full ascended gear and am missing a lot of dragonite which I won’t be getting anytime soon).

tl;dr just play the game and have fun getting to lvl 80. try not to make comparisons with the original GW etc. Also with 30 minutes a week you shouldn’t expect to see much progress. good luck

dual pistols is weak and only for single target.. even for that dagger is better. use sword/pistol for mobs and aoe, 5 to blind if needed and 3 for burst and evade at the same time. also make sure you have signet of malice (for heal), when you use sword 3 or any burst skill you will get healed by a lot. also, you can use either sword 2 or Steal as a gap closer if needed.

Help: Class choice

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nagr.1593

nagr.1593

I’m confused and a bit miserable. Is it okay to try and play a class the way I want or will I be expected to conform to the current meta the instant I try and do anything endgame? Why haven’t things been balanced out a bit more? People make it seem like if you do X or Y you’ll never win or be invited to anything. Whole classes have been designated “near useless” for huge aspects of the game.

Tl;dr Should I suck it up and just roll a Warrior? What are my options here if I want a long-ranged class that can do WvW and PVE.

It’s ok to play a class like ranger or necro for PvE if you absolutely want to, but they are sub-optimal for groups in general. I have neither, but I can say other classes bring a lot more group support. Thieves have stealth for trash runs, guards provide defensive boons, warriors bring the best dps support for groups, and eles can stack might/fury and are the most useful for speed runs. I usually am fine with any class in pugs though, long as they listen and stack when they need to.

btw not sure what you mean by long-ranged class, warriors can use bow with decent range (though I rarely need to). Eles I think have 1200 range with staff, which is the highest dps wep in game. you can still sit at max range with ranger if you want, but most groups in dungeons will dislike you if you do that. for instance at Lupi, one of the toughest bosses in game.. after we wiped once, me and another warrior carried at him while a ranger sat with bow at max range, downed once in phase 2 but his pet revived him, and again when boss died.. both times neither of us helped him but he survived. tbh I don’t think he rly helped much, but at least he didn’t die..

If aesthetics matter to you, the charr have some pretty kitten T3 cultural armour. Weapons on them (and norn) look bigger than on humans, but some of the backpieces look ridiculous because of how they run.

I think all t3 cultural armor looks good, Charr cultural armor is no exception (Heavy set at least).

But you still might want to try other armor choices. For like the first month I think I had temple armor, then I had Citadel of flame armor for a few more months (and some other pieces), before I decided to spend my gold on t3 cultural which I always thought was pretty decent. Weapons of course are bigger on Charr (this can either be a good or bad thing) and some backpieces like the the shiny Fractal one don’t look so good on them, on the other hand I always found the Spinal Blades backpiece are perfect for them

I also like both the Sylvari and Human t3 cultural armor (light/medium sets I mean). have trouble deciding which I like better, but they are both very nice.

nm, I already got most of the traits I wanted

I just decided to do the events to unlock them. I thought it would take a long time since i had to explore through a lot of regions, but it was actually prty fast. there were some events to kill champs that I had to wait a while for help, but lots of others came (I think because they also needed the events for same reason). The world bosses were the easiest, all i had to do was make sure I had the WP and be there when it started. The unlock events to find the splendid chest was the one I actualy enjoyed, I think there should be more like that (like run through a JP or something). The only ones I ended up spending SP on were the 100% map completion ones and the WvW events to capture towers etc. which I was too lazy for xD

Generally speaking, If you’re the only warrior in your party, take Battle Standard. If there is another warrior (or more than one), you’re fine to switch to Signet of Rage (or you could ask if they’re going to run that banner before switching).

Thats highly unnecessary.. maybe when running through mobs I will sometimes take Battle Standard in case someone gets downed, but in general case for pugs you dont need bother. For organized groups sure, since you will be getting perma might and fury anyway you can get whatever elite you want. But you will be sacrificing your personal dps as well as swiftness which is always useful, and from experience whenever pugs actually need Battle Standard at fights (like at Lupi), they will disappoint. At best I will run EA if I’m the only warrior, I don’t even bother with phalanx build anymore since it’s not worth it. too many noobs these days.. lots of Eles that don’t might stack or drop FGS at all, thieves that dont know how to blast or stealth past mobs, etc.

Here’s a good guide for warrior PvE build, the Main Warrior is the one I run for pugs and for cases like Arah I won’t even bother and will just go 6/5/0/0/3. its entirely up to you what you decide though, there are a couple of options with builds.

I don’t know where you’re getting 16 hours a day bro.. I alrdy said how long it takes me. I’m not smart enough to play the TP, tried it once and ended up losing quite a bit of gold so I just gave up on it. You also might think its 30min or less to solo Arah, but thats an ideal time which you won’t get until a lot of practice (i usually do 40min at best).

I used to do dungeon tours for 30g/day, but it was too much of a chore for me after a while. personally on a daily basis I only do the few dungeons that I like, namely TA both paths, CoF P1, CoE p1 or 2 (sometimes both), Arah 1/2, and AC 1/3 if I have time. thats hardly much and takes 2 hours at most.

Please, why don’t you share what dungeons you run in a day? You’d have to run all of them to get 50 gold.

I was mainly talking about one dungeon, actually. you can solo any arah path in an hour or so (except p4) and sell it for an easy 20g or so. i usually sell one or two paths and do a regular dungeon tour for around 15g, the whole thing takes me 3-4 hours.

Ranged attack in dungeons?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nagr.1593

nagr.1593

The kick in phase 1 is actualy not that telegraphed, its hard to avoid unless you can guess at the timing and can move out of melee range so it won’t hit you. Another clue is that he looks in the direction he is goin to kick, so if you are not in front you won’t be hit. The one in phase 2 however, should be telegraphed enough that you can avoid it. His aoe spray is still hard to avoid at melee range, but the trouble for those ranging starts from phase 2 to end. In phase 3 he will actually start chasing whoever is ranging or running away from him, so if you are in melee range you will be safer. You should also not move around, or he will put you in his bubble that will do a lot of dmg unless u have stability to dodge out of it.

Ranged attack in dungeons?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nagr.1593

nagr.1593

i assume your talking about Lupi since u mentioned Arah. I used to suck at him too, for the longest time (I think the first month or so) i would just range him with a bow, and get basically all useless utilities for my group and I’d end up dying anyway. you really have to know his attacks, but having 2 melee sets when fighting him (on warrior at least) is actually easier than with a ranged wep. Lupi I think is one of the only bosses who like to punish players who range him, so staying in close range and having a block etc. on a 2nd set is a good idea. I usually swap weps and retrait specifically for Lupi, and I know most others recommend you change builds when fighting him. For other bosses though, i always use melee weps once i know the fight. Also what boss encounters are you talking about? I usually do ones like AC, TA, COF, COE and Arah on warrior and I don’t need to retrait or swap weps for anything except Arah. most bosses should be easy enough for you to melee them.

I’ve been playing warrior for little over a year and honestly I’ve never been bored with it. It might be simple at times, but once you understand most classes it’s usually this way. I lvled a mesmer and guard as well, but I haven’t been on my guard in months (got bored with it I guess) and I stopped playing mesmer right after I lvled it coz it was even more boring, all I’d do was pull mobs or drop TW in dungeons, and in WvW I would either portal people through JPs or get killed a lot by thieves etc. My ele was the only other one I liked, but after a while it started to feel boring too. I’d run it for PvE mostly, either stack might and press 1 with hammer (or 2 with staff), and when in corner always spam 3/4 with FGS (basically same thing with warrior). Everyone likes different classes, if you aren’t enjoying one try another. Good luck

tbh running it solo/duo might be faster than getting a pug. As I do go a little slow, I’m trying to level a thief to see if I can maybe clear P1/2 faster—but overall I have to say it’s not too bad with warrior. One thing I will say, don’t go mesmer for P1.. Since you get a minimum of 5 per convert … why not, you might get lucky but, and it’s a big but, you have to put in bids and be patient if you don’t have the raw mats. And by the time you do get the mats you hope that the price of Powerful didn’t plummet.

yes, but if doing for repeated trials like if you need full stack of Blood, the average is very close to 7. for individual tries you might get 5 or even 11, but if you are doing in bulk then it is defnitely cheaper with recipe, no matter your luck. So assuming 3.32g cost for one recipe that I just calculated with buying out all items from TP (not buy orders), its like 47s per Blood with each try if you are doing in bulk. so you will definitely save some gold in the long term, and I don’t think you need to worry about Blood prices dropping by a lot anytime soon since its just been going up.

If you have a source of cheap Potent Blood then if you get slightly better than average, you may break even compared to putting in a bid for Powerful Blood.

I have tested it with getting 2-3 stacks of Blood that I needed over the months for legendaries and infusions, the average has always been close to 7 (sometimes more). therefore by just buying out all the things you need from TP (including Potent Blood), it is about 10s cheaper per each than if you were to buy the Blood from TP. So you save around 20g this way (then again, not a lot).

Mesmer – taken to dungeons only because of time warp and reflects, then he can die.. In pvp he might be good (in anything but duels mesmer is not viable), but the skill cap is that high, that noone reached it yet.

And the bolt of damask and deldrimor steel shouldn’t be tht much a problem, if you don’t feel liek crafting them you can always buy them off TP (and it isn’t that much difference, only like 1-2g costlier to buy). I made a similar post about this also:

Alphard solo warrior (easy way)

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

I just thought I’d share how I solo Alphard with warrior, since I can’t do it with the crates (maybe I’m just noob). I like to use the old corner spot that I’m used to, instead. I will sometimes see warriors asking for help on LFG with Alphard, I once tried to ask a mesmer friend for help and it ended up taking longer (15min, and wiped once).

I use a slightly defensive build 6/5/3/0/0, though I’ve heard someone say they use regen banners to tank Alphard (haven’t tried that one). The key to this build is Adrenal Health which gives just enough regen to help with survivability. I usually take Endure Pain with this build to make it easier but I used Signet of Fury to demonstrate, with V in Defense instead.

Legendary Armor

I meant a single legendary armor set by itself, so 1 gift of fortune, precursor etc. and it would cost like 2k gold. that might be something I would craft.

How is immobilize useful in pvp and pve?

in Players Helping Players

nagr.1593

Immob isn’t that useful for general PvE except when soloing, it helps maintain some distance between you and the target. Specific situations when it would be useful for groups is Arah P1, when stacking for the tar boss immobs are quite useful to trap the boss and keep it from running away.

Sadly feedback (and reflects in general)were nerfed across dungeons, but it still works against tough bosses like Lupi. I honestly don’t care if they fix it so it doesn’t work at Lupi either, since most bag PUGs tend to rely overmuch on reflects when fighting him otherwise they wipe a lot. Bottom line groups shouldn’t learn to rely too much on reflects or really anything else, or it might be the next thing that gets nerfed.

Would be cool if it was a legendary armor set, instead of separate armor pieces. if so I would craft a set, simply so I could change the stats on it if I wanted to.

Precursor Question

its usually a 1-2 months wait for precursors to drop to an ideal price. I got dusk for 800g a week ago, before that spark for like 600g a month or so ago. Its all about waiting, the prices fluctuate a lot nowadays but will go down to an acceptable value eventually. you just have to know what that is.

Ele/Thief/Necro/Guard ?

well since your name is Mr. ‘Simple’ man, I honestly think warrior is best for you. it is good for people who are starting out since the mechanics are quite simple (yes that is why u see so many of them). Just because you see so many warriors shouldn’t discourage you from making one, in fact I simply picked warrior as first class becuase I had leveled a ranged class in other mmos like WoW and people said I sucked at it. In this game warrior won’t disappoint, they are frontliners and probably one of the best classes to sustain lots of dmg without falling. they have huge room for error, decent survivability overall. however their dps does slightly suffer, though for ‘casual’ groups they should be more than adequate. warriors have average to above-average dps in general, and while they won’t match an ele with FGS in hitting big numbers they are still solid dps for most cases. Another good reason to get them is for offensive support, in casual groups one PS/banner warrior alone can boost the group’s dps by a whole lot. Their simple design also allows for same set for both PvE and WvW, since full zerk warriors aren’t that squishy as other classes. While zerk isn’t really optimal for WvW it is at least doable, which is not the case with Ele for example.

Need help deciding on main...

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nagr.1593

nagr.1593

1. What’s a good class to main? In terms of wvw, pvp, pve?
(I’m mostly looking for a good class to use for basically…all 3…which has good mobility)
2. Most fun class to never regret maining?
3. Best features (in terms of legendaries and other aesthetics? (Note race too plz

1. Warrior, ele, or thief. all have good mobility, with warrior being ‘easiest’ mobility.

2. Its different for lots of people.. for instance, I still find warrior fun even after a year of playing it and am on it more than my Ele, despite having world completion & legendaries on both. though I would say most people find Ele to be the most fun class, including me. There was a poll a few months ago about this very topic, here is the link below:
http://strawpoll.me/1114049

3. Imo the best legendaries are Eternity and Incinerator, any class that can use them is probably best. Warrior/guard/ele/thief.. any one works.
