Suggestion: make honest patch notes.

Here are three things that the patch notes did NOT mention. Oddly enough, it are all three nerfs…

- The bank & Guild bank in the Green BL for the Red Team is gone.
- Spy Kits now have a 60 second CD.
- The dailies are much harder to complete.

My suggestion is to be honest next time. Funny enough, it is always the bad news that is forgotten.

So much for the bag/bank slot sale!!!

Just wanted to point out, this isn’t necessary true, because purchases of the bank slot with A. people who already had gems and B. people who bought it with cash doesn’t have any affect on the Exchange. So while a lot of people bought Gems with Gold, it is very possible that a large, even larger, number bought the bags with previous gems/money.

True, thanks for pointing that out.

The correct wording would be ‘enough people to make the gem price skyrocket so that the next people that buy gems complain’

reasonable people have no reason not to believe ANet when they say “We don’t do anything to directly affect gem exchange costs.”

Euh… call me unreasonable then, cause in my mind ANet certainly affects these costs when ANet adds a ‘discount’ to the store, does it not?

So anet do a sale to help people and you still whinge, grow up………….Anet dont bother with anymore sales its to much hassle just charge full price

People complain because the sale made prices higher: before the sale, a bank slot costed less gold than after the sale necause the price of gems went up.

This sale was only a sale for people that already had gems.

And if you look at the skyrocketed prices of the gems, you see that this was only a minority: alot of people had to buy gems to get the extra slots, expecting to pay less.

Think of it this way. The government can print as much money as they want, that doesn’t mean your bank account has access to that money. The currency exchange does not have access to gem creation. It has a limited stock that players add and subtract from.

This complicates the system alot. It makes no sense at all, to be honest, when you think about it.

A. Do I take gems away from the Stock when I buy gems for gold? One would think so, that’s how exchanges work.

This would explain why the price in gold goes up when a new item or a ‘discount’ for a store items comes, because people buy gems at that moment. But…

B. Do I take gems away from the Stock when I buy gems for dollars? One would think not, because The currency exchange does not have access to gem creation. It has a limited stock that players add and subtract from.

If A is true and B is not true, Anet keeps track of where my gems come from… that can’t be right, can it?

Cause if they do keep track… Let’s call the gems that players have Gold Gems (gems players bought with gold) and Dollar Gems (gems players bought with dollars).

C. Do I add gems to the Stock when I sell Gold Gems back for gold? Again, one would think so, that’s how exchanges work.

D. Do I add gems to the Stock when I sell Dollar Gems for gold?
Again, one would think so, that’s how exchanges work.
But saying The currency exchange does not have access to gem creation. It has a limited stock that players add and subtract from. seems to suggest otherwise…

Serious, I can only imagine how hard the story lines must have been to write. Clearly, not everyone likes them, but they are okay-quality in my opinion.

They are not as deep as in some other games, but that’s fine, games are all about priorities. I think they are good enough to satisfy the needs & wants of most people, myself included.

I just logged out for the evening, but before I did, I noticed something peculiar. Can someone explain to me, how in this “free market”, both Gems and Gold are spiking at the same time?

I think I must of slept through that process explanation during economics class.

The Gold-to-Gems graphic and the Gems-to-Gold graphic have inversed axes.

In the first graph, the item that you BUY is on the Y-axe.

In the second graph, the item that you SELL is on the Y-axe.

It’s misleading, yes.

I don’t know if there is some sort of marketing theory to defend this. Maybe some marketeer thought that more people would convert when the graphics go up and decided to mislead us by changing the axes.

But maybe it’s just a coincidence that the UI is so misleading.

I’m curious, assuming the argument that a 20% discount should apply to the gem exchange rate (I think people here have done a good job of explaining why the sale isn’t a sale on the exchange, so lets leave that be). What system do you use to create a moving 20% discount on exchange, keeping in mind that the supply of gems is not unlimited, and that the exchange does not fabricate gems?

How is the supply of gems NOT unlimited? Every time someone buys gems with dollars, gems are created out of thin air by Anet. Every. Time. That’s unlimited supply or am I missing something?

That being said, one way would be to fix the ratio gems-gold for x hours.

Not that I would like that: I am fully aware that these promotions are pure marketing stunts, created to make more money for Anet. Anet would have to come up with other ways to make money, if they don’t trick people with borderline-false advertising.

And let’s face it, it IS borderline-false advertising: the price of bank slots did NOT go down with 20% when you buy the gems with gold, in fact, the price went UP.

Something tells me that the marketing people at Anet are high-fiving themselves cause they managed to trick people into buying the same thing for more gold with this action, lol.

Gem Price Plummet?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Tallis.5607

Tallis.5607

One thing I have wondered:
if someone sells 10,000 gems for gold, then someone else buys 10,000 gems with gold, will the gem->gold price be the same after as before? (is it the same increase as decrease?)

No one knows. They don’t say how their mechanics work.

It depends on what system they use.

They can’t really use a price system based on pure supply, because the supply of gold and gems is infinite (Anet is the seller and they just create gems or gold whenever a player asks).

They can use a partial supply, for example, only count as supply the gems that players have. But the amount of gems that the player actually has, goes up over time.

They can also base their system on the amount of gems that players supplied in the last -say- 10 days and call that ‘supply’.

Bottom line: no one knows.

sell 100,000 gems and get 1,500g, then price of gems goes down to 100 gems for 1g, then you buy 100,000 gems for 1,150g

First of all, you loose 30%, not 15%. It doesn’t show anywhere, but -believe it or not- you pay a 15% fee when you sell gems AND you pay a 15% fee when you sell gold.

Try it. Buy 10 gems. Then sell 10 gems. You just lost around 30% (assuming that the price inbetween those two moments hasn’t changed all that much, ofcourse).

.

Anet doesn’t say how the system works. But… selling gems is one of only two sources of income that Anet has. Despire their official ‘players decide on the gem price’ stance, you can be pretty sure that Anet constructed this whole system with one thing and one thing only in mind: make money.

I can’t blame them for that, I would do the exact same thing.

There is no way that Anet will allow you to get that 30% back in a single transaction. Or in a series of transactions for that matter: there are plenty of systems you can think of, where the price would change more when you sell 4 blocks of 25k gems than when you sell one block of 100k.

.

Although, the marketeer in me, could think of an exception: when Anet makes a distinction between gems that are bought with dollars and gems that are bought with gold.
A marketeer could argue that people that buy gems with dollars should be treated differently than people that buy gems with gold, because people that buy gems with dollars give Anet money.
One could think of a system where some players are ‘flagged’ as dollar-spending-people and are treated differently, in gem/gold exchange for example.

But I have no indication that Anet is doing this, so I doubt it.

What Is Up With Increasing Prices?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Tallis.5607

I really think they need to adjust lodestone drops.

Then the prices of lodestones would drop and Anet would make less money from people that buy gems with dollars, convert it into gold and buy legendary materials.

Since selling gems for dollars is one of only two ways Anet makes money (the other way is selling games), they do not want low prices for legendaries. They want hiiiiiiiiigh prices, as high as possible while still being affordable for people with dollars to spend.

There is a reason why they added a new tier of weapons (ascended) and will bump the DPS of legendaries from exotic to ascended: dollars.

In exchange for dollars, you get higher DPS. That’s every gaming marketeers dream!

What Is Up With Increasing Prices?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Tallis.5607

Tallis.5607

But as for your post, Anet doesn’t control the prices, we players do.

Take ectos…
- Anet decided on the drop rates of rares. Not the players.
- Anet decided on how many ectos you get on salvages on average. Not the players.
- Anet decided on the amount of ectos needed in legandaries. Not the players.
- Anet decided on the 15% fee. Not the players.
- Anet decided to have a way to legitimatly buy gold.

All of these elements are elements that are beyond the player’s control.
And all these elements determine the price of ectos.

Then saying ‘Anet doesn’t decide on the price’ is… well… simply not true.

Gem Price Plummet?

It’s the same debate as always.

Anet decided on the 15% tax.
Anet decided that it is not a bidding market between players.
Anet decides on how the gem/gold ratio is calculated each time (I suspect only taking the last x orders or of the last x days into account).
Anet decides what you can do with gems.
Anet decides how much gold drops.

And still, Anet says they don’t decide the price of gems. It’s an odd point to defend.

Gem Price Plummet?

when you buy gems, and it is converted to gold in game, where does the gold come from?

The gold is created out of thin air whenever someone pushes ‘buy gold’. Kinda like the gold that NPCs drop.

Just like the gems are created out of thin air whenever someone pushes ‘buy gems’.

What I am wondering is if the gem exchange, as a whole, creates gold and if so, how much.

Some people buy gems with gold, so gold get’s ‘destroyed’ = OUT.
Other people buy gold with gems, so gold gets created = IN.

I wonder if OUT > IN (my guess would be that it is).

And by how much (my guess would be by alot).

And, ofcourse, just how much million of gold is involved in each way.

Oddly, the first time SOR faced them, i dont recall them being this way.

This post is HILARIOUS…

If you change the order of things, you see what happenes here…

- First, TC doesn’t complain.
- Then, TC notices that SoR is so incredibly lame that they camps spawns with trebs and all.
- And only THEN, TC complains about how lame SoR is.

You just proofed exactly the point that TC made: that some people on SoR are so lame that even when they have 550+ points, they camp spawns.

Luckily for your server, most people on TC know that it is only a small portion on your server that is as lame as you.

I should correct then and say, that forced redistribution doesn’t change the disparities of wealth in the society, simply changes those holding the wealth. To be fair though, in almost every occasion it goes rogue in a few years and those people end up poor or dead anyway.

o_O

If 10 people make 1,000,000 a year before taxes and 1,000 people make 40,000, and then you ‘force distribution’ through taxes so that 10 people make 500,000 a year after taxes and 1,000 people make 35,000 you DID change the disparty in wealth.

You went from 1,000/40 to 500/35. That’s from 25x to 15x through taxes. How you can say it is not wealth distribution is beyond me.

(Not to mention that the US, with it’s extreem low wealth distribution and catering to rich people, spends 50% more of it’s GDP on healthcare than France, 17.9 vrs 11.9 in 2010 according to the worldbank. One could argue that you got to take the lower cost of things like healthcare into account as ‘income’ which would further change disparity)

Also… saying that ‘those people end up poor or dead anyway’ is a extreme point of view that is very offensive for… oh, I don’t know… 90% of the earth’s population. If any non-Anet person would post something this offensive, we’d probably be banned.

To do the monthly, I bought like 200 white items (acolyte pants & gloves) from TP and started to salage them.

Then I took the next 40 of the TP and noticed that I could not salvage 2 of them. the rest I could.

Then I took the next 38 of the TP, but I could not salvage any of them.

I tried with three different type of salvage kits, none worked. The salvage symbol shows up when I hover over the item, but it is red (and thus clicking doesn’t do anything).

How to fix this?

The bl TP being abused

in Black Lion Trading Co

Tallis.5607

Several people on these forums have pointed out why this isn’t true. Mainly, the assumption that this is profit maximizing behavior is false.

Oh, I didn’t even get to the ’’maximising’’ part :-)

I won’t go as far to say that GW2 does the same thing as SWTOR. Or LOTRO. Or Skyrim.

In SWTOR they have a specific job (I saw the job posting, it is a REAL pity that I didn’t -save it, it would be an eye opener) for someone to maximise profits from the ‘gem’ store.

Someone who’s job it is to classify players into categories (like ‘likely to pay for cosmetic items’, ‘likely to pay for utility items’, ‘not likely to pay’) and then market items spcifically towards these people.

I would not dare to say that Anet maximises profit by doing the exact same thing as every company does, because I have no proof of it. I’ll take your word that Anet is such a nice company that they do not want to maximise money from the players.

There are even arguments NOT to maximise money income, because people do not like to be used as cash cows.

But saying that Anet doesn’t watch at all how many gems they sell that get converted into gold and act accordingly… sorry… I am not so gullible to believe Anet doesn’t change things to make more money with gems-to-gold people.

It pays your bills. You’re not working for a charity organisation.

You are mistaking increasing demand for rare items for inflation. Wealth consolidation does not cause inflation. Inflation is a measure of change in the value of currency (in this case gold), not the value of rare high demand items; it’s only really affected by the volume of gold in the economy, and the TP removes it.

No, inflation is not only affected by the volume of gold. It is also affected by demand. Stuff get more expensive when people demand it more.

Take for example a character that makes -say- 5g per day.

The first x days after hitting 80, the character buys useful things like exotic armor & weapons, fancy food and superior runes.

This drives the prices of those things up. Plain and simple. More demand. The character may have the same amount as before, but when all players are all after the same x items (say Superior runes of Divinity), the price go up.

Sure, you need more gold for prices to rise. But it is certainly not the only factor.

.

Also… for an economic forum, few people here do not ask the most fundamental economic question: where does Anet gets their money?

They get their money from (only) two sources: selling games to new people and selling gems to existing players.

When prices of items, like dye or superior runes or exotics, are too high for people to grind for the gold, Anet makes money because a certain % of people will buy gemls to convert to gold.

And THAT is why prices are so high.

Not because players make them so high.
Not because of gold hording.

But because Anet sets the parameters for these prices (they determine the droprates, they determine the uses, they determine the altrnatives) and it is in Anet’s intrest to have prices high enough that people buy gold with gems.

Personally, I do not have any problem with Anet manipulating the prices of items, to maximise their own income. Someone has to pay the bill for this great game!
I fully understand that a company needs to make money and since they only have two sources to make money03
It is perfectly reasonable that they ensure that they make money with gem-to-gold converters.

But it is odd that most people that post economic theories here on the forums do not take the most basic economic law of the game into account: Anet needs to make money.

Couple of problems though:
1. Players control that market

Point 1 is simply not true. Sorry, but it’s not.

Anet determines the drop rate of any item.
Anet determines the TP fee.
Anet determines how many uses there are of the item.
Anet determines if there are alternatives for an item.

Saying that the players drive prices is simply incorrect. Players base their supply & demand on parameters that Anet sets.

1. Whether or not they formed super servers the queue should still work correctly.

2. It’s not like a queue is a new gizmo and no one is sure how it should work.

How are they not working correctly?

Despite what Anet says, there were NO WHERE near 100+ people in TCBL when it had a queue. Not. Even. Close.

I do not know what causes this problem, but it seems that it keeps thinking that people are still in WWW when they are not.

.

Also… I wonder why Anet shares alot of information on the game but they never clearly stated exactly how much players there are before the queue comes. Did they ever gave a reason why they don’t tell us how many?

Just to be sure I ran a quick database query for the last few days and all the queue numbers look quite reasonable.

Sorry, but this is simply not true.

There were NO WHERE near 100 people in WWW when there was a queue. Not on TCBL, not on all maps together.

I understand that you check your numbers and say ‘’business as usual’‘, but it’s simply not correct. The numbers that you see, do NOT, in any way, correspond to the actual players in WWW.

.

Also, on a totally different subject: there have been several Anet posts about this, but none of you ever said the actual number of that queue. Is there a reason why it is a secret?

I may not completely understand the implications of the score reset, but after next week none of the servers currently in T1 may be there. Won’t tiers be determined by whatever number of points are gained by servers during the week? As in servers that blow out their current tier will be T1? As I said, I may have it completely wrong.

Indeed, that’s what is going to happen.

.

Expect ALOT of rating gaming in the next weeks.

SoR did it, admitted it on the forums and all, but they didn’t get punished for manipulating the rating.

Unless Anet punishes SoR somehow, Anet basically gives a free pass to all servers to game the rating system.

Servers Transfers price - big fail.

now they are paid to help WvW population stabilize and this pricing is not helping at all

No, they didn’t make tranfers payable for WWW. They did it (gasp) to make money.

But since this has the biggest effect on WWW (especially with guesting) they added WWW stuff.

But the main goal for paid tranfers has nothing to do with WW, it’s pure profit-driven.

And I can’t blame them, someone has to pay the bill (and I’m glad it’s not me).

WvW Maximum Player Numbers?

In the thread where they answered several WWW questions (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/Willing-to-share-WvW-details/page/6 ) they stayed vague on this, not giving a number.

But it’s certainly not 166 players, most agree on that.

I’d say something like 100 (and I’m being generous here), reasoning that the 166 is including the average amounts of pets (see the tread).

If you don’t plan to WvW on the WvW maps, and there is a queue, please also show the respect we’re known for and free up the spot.

As much as I agree with the if-there-is-a-queue-give-up-your-spot theory, it doesn’t hold in this case. IT’s not like this were 20 people that didn’t WWW at all and holding spots for a full day.

This were a group of people that fought long, then RPed some, then fought again. You can’t tell these people to go away from WWW, just because they only fight 90% of their time there.

If you do, what’s next?
Tell people that aren’t 80 to go to WWW when there is a queue, because they’re only 90% as efficient as an 80?
Tell people that don’t have full exotics to stay away when there is a queue, cause your stats are 10% higher.

TC is a RP server. You got to respect people that fight 90% of the time and RP 10% of the time IMO.

Do not listen to anyone except to me!
Come to TC!
1. We are the RP server, so we have a fun community.
2. We are a T2 WWW server, so alot of WWW going on.
3. Despite our excellent WWW rank, we do not have loooong queues. We have them, but usually shorter than 15 minutes.
4. We have the best cookiesh!

Personally I think the reset was a bad idea. It’s going to cause a lot of servers that were in their right tiers to get stomped by much larger servers again.

SOR Mesmer in TC borderlands. Your efforts to elude me were amusing. Chasing you across half the map was thrilling. Running to your thief comrade and attempting to make a stand was also enjoyable, but in the end, pointless. We both knew what was coming, and yet you still ran. Right into where your zerg was battling a smaller TC group. Did you think they would stop me? Did you think a screen full of red toons would keep me from you? I had chased you across half the map, did you think I would make the smart choice and run away? No. I hunted you down like the SOR scum you are, and planted a flag over your body, seconds before your zerg finished me off, but still enough time to collect my loot bag off your ignoble corpse, complete with honor badge. That is a memory to savor.

I agree, when you can’t win the war, have fun with things like this You got to get your laughs where you can!

how will the reset really work?

in WvW

Posted by: Tallis.5607

Tallis.5607

The way I see it, explained by an example…

Next week’s tier, is fully based on the score of what the servers will have friday at reset, with the old system. I take the numbers from http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA as example)

T1 = JQ, SoR & SoS
T2 = BG, TC & FA
T3 = Kai, Mag, DB
T4 = SI, YB, CD
T5 = EB, IoJ, DR

All servers will have ‘Old ranking = 0’ in the first week.

Assume the following scores at the end of week 1.
T1 = JQ = 90k, SoR = 80k & SoS = 70k
T2 = BG = 51k, TC = 121k & FA = 71k
T3 = Kai = 92k, Mag = 82k & DB = 72k
T4 = SI = 103k, YB = 83k, CD = 63k
T5 = EB = 84k, IoJ = 94k, DR = 74k

Then week 2 will look like this
T1 = TC, SI & IoJ
T2 = EB, YB & Kai
T3 = JQ, Mag, DB
T4 = SoR, FA, CD
T5 = SoS, DR & BG.

So, the tiers in week 2 will be 100% based on the margin of victory in the first week. Because everyone’s ranking in the fiorst week is the same, there are no higher or lower ranked servers in your tier, so this factor is not taken into account.

Week 3 ups and downs will depend on the same as now, the margin of victory and the ranking of the serves in your tier compared to your own ranking.

This is the week were the old top servers are going to have to proof themselves.

And it will be pure, blind luck for the other servers if they will be pitted against a top-3 server or not in this week.

Result?
Lower servers will be tempted to do what SoR did last week and manipulate the rankings at the end of week 2. Just a few points up or down can make a huge difference: it will decide if you are in a tier with a top-3 server in the 3rd week or not. And the result in week 3 is very important, they will determine where your server will be in week 4 much, much more than the results determine rankking snow, due to the reset.

the reset will be quite interesting i must say. definitely was not expecting that. the top tiers at least seemed to be setting in place

Alot depends on the new ranking system: Anet wants servers to move up and down faster, so we don’t always play against the same people.

There were other ways to do that (like 48h matches or having tiers with 6 servers and pick 3 randomly) but they decided to change the ranking system. We’ll see how it turns out for everyone.

we wanted another week to farm siege and get ready for T1.

Thank you for being honest. Apperently you either didn’t get the memo where it was ordered to deny all this and say straight-faced ‘we did not gamed the ranking, it is all a coincidence, really’ or you got the memo and decided to be honest anyways!

Anyway, you got your extra week in T2, I hope you enjoy it!

I certainly enjoyed defending Dawn against twice as many of you for hours. Despite the treb in garrison ponding on our poor wall, SOR didn’t get the tower, hehe.

Ofcourse, we didn’t get Garrison either, so I guess it’s not good enough for us, but soit, you take what you can get in life!

Really glad to see Geisch’s server moving up to T1. If you think Blackgate had good coverage when we were in T2 then you’ll be mind-kittened when you see the new JQ. They recently got a huge amount of foreign transfers on both Euro and Asian times. If Blackgate were to fall to T2 then hope TC is ready for us and possibly Kaineng? Who would have thought lol…

Lot is still to be decided for T2.

Either Kaineg or FA will move up to T2, they are only a few ranking score apart now.

And either SoS or BG will move down to T2, that is also very, very close.

Either way, next week will be the first week after these crazy tranfer changes, so maybe fights will be more balanced then.

Bravo [FEAR], you have to glitch into Veloka in order to maintain your overwhelming victory this week as well. Here is your round of applause…

Please report all evidence of cheating to ANET. However, I know you have none for the instance you have mentioned.

Got a vid, would anyone else like me to post it?

Sure. I hate cheaters, even when there are isolated incidents on my own server. I only seen SoR cheat once (where a mesmer jumped up a tower while a whole zerg was outside, but only 5 people took the portal up, the rest of the zerg was so honest to kep ramming the gate) so I wouldn’t accuse them of cheating easily.

we all find the fairly even, competitive match-ups to be really fun, and you guys ruined that, then held back in tier 2 at the end of last week to avoid trying to move up to tier 1

^

I never heard anyone complain too much about SoR until you gamed the ranking system so hard that everyone is wondering why Anet doesn’t punish you for this abuse of the rankings.

But you got away with it, so not much else we can say.

The spawn camping doesn’t help your popularity, ofcourse: even though we have seen much worse, it always feels wrong.
